“SAMI Navantia Naval Industries (SAMINavantia), a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) and Navantia S.A., marked the launch of construction for the first of five Avante 2200 corvettes with an official keel-laying ceremony in Cadiz, Spain.
The surface combatants are being built at Navantia’s San Fernando shipyard and are due to be delivered by 2023.
The ceremony was attended by Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) personnel headed by Rear Admiral Faleh Abdulrahman alfaleh, Dr. Andreas Schwer, CEO of SAMI, Susana de Sarri, Chairwoman of Navantia S.A., Antonio Rodriguez-Barberan, CEO of SAMINavantia.
The keel-laying represents a significant landmark in the construction of the vessels, which is one of the key components of the joint venture agreement established between SAMI and Navantia.
“Today’s event marks a major milestone in our collaboration with Navantia as we endeavor to further strengthen the Royal Saudi Naval Forces’ outstanding maritime capabilities through the manufacture of these five state-of-the-art vessels.
This project represents a proof of concept for Saudi Vision 2030 for the localization of 50 percent of military equipment spending by 2030,” Schwer said.
In addition to the construction of the vessels, the Avante 2200 project will encompass Life Cycle Support for five years from the delivery of the first vessel, with an option for an additional five years.
Based on Wednesday’s statement, SAMINavantia will provide Combat System Integration (CSI) and ?installation as part of a landmark contract worth over €900 million signed at DSEI 2019 in September.
The joint venture is also responsible for system engineering and architecture, hardware design, software ?development, testing, verification, prototyping, simulation and modeling, and the delivery of logistical support and training programs.
The five-year project will create jobs for 6,000 people, including 1,100 direct employees, over 1,800 employees of the Auxiliary Industry of Navantia, and more than 3,000 indirect employees generated by other suppliers.
The fourth and fifth corvettes will be finalized and delivered within Saudi Arabia, contributing to the development of the Kingdom’s defense ecosystem through the transfer of technology and creation of new career opportunities.
The agreement has the potential to boost the localization of the Kingdom’s technology capabilities by up to 60%, in line with goals of the Saudi Vision 2030.
The five Avante 2200 corvettes are being specially adapted to meet the RSNF requirements, including the capability to operate in the extreme temperatures found in the region.
The multirole vessel is designed specifically for surveillance and maritime control, search and rescue, and providing assistance to other vessels during missions.”

On the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the h?n?q??min??m?-speaking Musqueam people, as far-right movements and hate crimes continue to rise in Vancouver and around the world, UBC plans to welcome white nationalists and xenophobes Ricardo Duchesne and Mark Hecht — guests of the so-called “Students for Freedom of Expression.”
Ricardo Duchesne is the disgraced neo-nazi University of New Brunswick professor who was forced to take early retirement in June after more than 100 of his colleagues signed an open letter condemning his overt racism. He is the author of a 2017 book, published by an obscure fascist publishing house, titled “Canada in Decay: Mass Immigration, Diversity, and the Ethnocide of Euro-Canadians.” He regularly writes blog posts about how Europeans have been “the greatest in everything since the beginning” and “must simply reclaim the West as uniquely theirs.” He also appears on white supremacist podcasts and at speaking engagements alongside other neo-nazis like Faith Goldy.
Mark Hecht is the author of that anti-immigrant opinion piece in the Vancouver Sun on September 7 that argued “Canada should say goodbye to diversity, tolerance, and inclusion.” That op-ed was widely denounced, including by the paper’s own employees, and ultimately retracted, followed by an apology from the editor-in-chief. Hecht is a sessional instructor in geography at Calgary’s Mount Royal University and author of a self-published book titled “The Rules of Invasion: Why Europeans Naturally Invaded the New World.”
Together, Duchesne and Hecht glorify European racial superiority and conquest of indigenous peoples, while simultaneously complaining about immigration, multiculturalism, and white “ethnocide”.
On Wednesday, October 9, we call on students and others from UBC and across Vancouver to come together and stand up to their ignorance and hate. Immigrants are welcome here; white supremacists are not!

“The number of active criminal networks in the Stockholm region has reached 50 and more women are getting involved in organized crime, a new police report has warned.
“Some [of the groups] have disappeared while others have been added,” said Palle Nilsson, head of intelligence at Stockholm police.
According to the report, a total of 20 of the identified gangs were new while 30 had been noted in previous such reports.
The total number was up from 46 in 2017 and 39 identified in 2015. The updated survey was carried out in order to ensure police have a comprehensive picture of the gangs active in the region, and to understand each gang’s capabilities.
Police said that around 1,500 people were involved in criminal networks across Stockholm, and that the number of women involved had increased since earlier reports from 2015 and 2017. Women were also reported to have taken on more roles linked to planning and carrying out crimes, as well as simply supporting the groups.
The average age of those involved in the gangs had fallen, with most networks including members ages under 16 years old. Over the same period, more women have taken on roles within these gangs, according to a report from Stockholm police.
And the report also noted increased mobility among the groups, with people more likely than in previous years to be part of multiple networks or to switch, and “a clear trend towards collaboration with other criminal networks, nationally and internationally”.
Many of the gangs have access to weapons.
Some 15 people have been fatally shot in Stockholm in the first nine months of 2019 alone, and the report also noted that gangs were more likely to turn to kidnapping than in previous years.
“Further conclusions are that several of the networks have a high level of violence and we see that the average age of those in the networks has dropped. In addition, we see that women are more involved in organized crime than before,” said Palle Nilsson.”
