This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

However, orphaned countries of the Soviet Union, including the V4, continue to recover from two generations of slavery under communism.     • Perhaps such a group is unnecessary in the US. The more visibly the left makes fools of themselves, the more likely the ballot box will get used to express disagreement. This has to be the reason that 3rd party candidates do as well as they do. PT was the first 3rd-party candidate to win since Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican President. Cleverly, Trump won by running as a Republican.

    “German authorities say they have arrested two Pakistani men accused of being part of a criminal gang engaged in a large-scale tax scam involving emissions certificates.

    Prosecutors said Thursday that the 37 and 40-year-old men were arrested Tuesday at Frankfurt Airport after they flew in from Pakistan to give themselves up.

    Frankfurt prosecutor Alexander Badle said German authorities issued international arrest warrants in 2014 for the suspects, whose names weren’t released.

    Along with another Pakistani man, who was sentenced in 2016 to more than 8 years imprisonment, the suspects are alleged to have fraudulently claimed 136 million euros ($150 million) from tax authorities between August 2009 and April 2010.

    As in a separate but similar case, the gang used Deutsche Bank to trade the emissions certificates and reclaim taxes they never paid.”

    “When all is said and done, we need dialogue and we need to sit down” at the negotiating table, Haftar said in a statement issued on Wednesday night ahead of a special session on Libya on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

    However, Haftar stressed that dialogue was “not possible so long as terrorist groups and criminal militias control Tripoli” – a reference to militias that back the Government of National Accord, AFP reported.

    Haftar welcomed the special session to be co-chaired by France and Italy in New York later on Thursday. He hopes it may come up with proposals that “serve Libya’s interests and at the same time restore security and stability.””

    “After languishing in jail for 18 years for charges under Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws, a death-row convict was finally acquitted by the country’s top court due to lack of evidence.

    A three-judge Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, on Wednesday exonerated Wajih-ul-Hassan, lodged in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpath jail, from the blasphemy charges, the Dawn reported.

    A case was registered against Hassan in 1999 for writing blasphemous letters to a lawyer. In 2001, a handwriting expert in his report said that the writing of the accused closely matched with the letters in question, following which a Lahore court convicted Hassan and awarded him death sentence. The decision was later maintained by the Lahore High Court as well.

    Under Pakistan’s penal code, the offence of blasphemy is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

    In its judgement on Wednesday, the Supreme Court observed that the prosecution has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the letters, which became the basis of blasphemy allegations against Hassan, were actually written by him, and consequently rejected the case.

    This is surreal. Did someone simply forget about this? Or is it OK that the senators did this – with, bonus, an implied threat to congressional support for U.S.-Ukraine relations (read: quid pro quo)? And if so, then it’s obviously OK for Trump to do it? (Perhaps the House Democrats didn’t get the memo?)

    Alternatively: is it a high crime and/or misdemeanor that the senators did this, and it therefore means that the senators should be censured and expelled by their fellows from the Senate?

    Richard: The Dems are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Dems in the Senate wrote a letter to Ukraine demanding asking them to investigate Trump, they also made veiled threats about cutting military assistance if this wasn’t done. This is the exact thing they are accusing Trump of doing, their hypocrisy has been exposed to the light of day. Or is it their stupidity in thinking we are too stupid to notice what they are doing?

    The actions of the Dems and their sycophant allies in the Propaganda Media are destroying the Dems Party and the entire Propaganda Media. The Dems are moving Heaven and Earth to try and reverse the 2016 election and to delegitimize all elections so they can seize power. Their goal is to gain total power over everyone in the world, the power to force us to live the way they want and to think only the thoughts they approve of. Take a good look at what the Chicoms are doing in Mainland China, that is the future that the Dems want to bring to everyone. A future that will make Orwell’s nightmare seem like a pleasent afternoon in the park.

    • Trump-Zelensky phone call content is about investigating Spygate (and is a nothingburger otherwise)

      In the interest of getting this posted, we’ll forgo extensive commentary and just let you, our intelligent readers, have at it.

      A couple of excerpts from the transcript (link at bottom) may whet your appetite. (They may also put you to sleep, but at least pause to note the context.)

      As suspected, Trump’s query about the Bidens’ activity was made in the prior context of Ukrainian links to the larger saga of the 2016 election. Trump opens with a reference to CrowdStrike and the DNC server, and that, along with a couple of other references and the fact that he asks President Zelensky to call Attorney General Barr as well as Rudy Giuliani, makes it clear that this is about the Justice Department investigation of Spygate, assigned by Barr to John Durham. (I mentioned that assumption in the article about the “impeachment inquiry” on Tuesday.)

      Trump to Zelensky: “I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say Crowdstrike … I guess you have one of your wealthy people… The server, they say Ukraine has it. There are a lot of things that went on, the whole situation .. I think you’re surrounding yourself with some of the same people. I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the bottom of it. As you said yesterday, that whole nonsense ended with a very poor performance by a man named Robert Mueller, an incompetent performance – but they say a lot of it started with Ukraine. Whatever you can do, it’s very important that you do it if that’s possible.”

      California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff read a portion of a transcript of a telephone conversation between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Thursday before the House Intelligence Committee — but the congressman largely fabricated the president’s words.

      Schiff claimed he was reading “the essence” of the president’s words to the committee’s witness, Acting Director of National Intelligence, Joseph Maguire.

      “This is the essence of what the president communicates. We’ve been very good to your country, very good, no other country has done as much as we have, but you know what, I don’t see much reciprocity here. I hear what you want. I have a favor I want from you, though. And I’m going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good.”

      The congressman on Wednesday compared Trump’s words to Volodymyr Zelensky as akin to a “Mafia-like shakedown” and he apparently read that perception into his interpretation of the transcript of that conversation.

      Schiff continued, making it up as he went along: “I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand, lots of it, on this and on that. I’m going to put you in touch with people, not just any people, I’m going to put you in touch with the attorney general of the United States, my attorney general Bill Barr. He’s got the whole weight of the American law enforcement behind him.”

      The House Intelligence Committee chairman even suggested that Trump told Zelensky, “‘And I’m going to put you in touch with Rudy — you’re going to love him, trust me. You know what I’m asking, and so I’m only going to say this a few more times in a few more ways. And by the way, don’t call me again, I’ll call you when you’ve done what you’ve asked.’ This is the sum and character what the president was trying to communicate with the president of Ukraine. It would be funny if it wasn’t such a graphic betrayal of the president’s Oath of Office.”

      Schiff has said he believes impeachment of the president can be used as a “tool” to expose Trump’s alleged misconduct.

      His complaint suggested he was an analyst by training with an understanding of Ukrainian politics.

      WASHINGTON — The whistle-blower who revealed that President Trump sought foreign help for his re-election and that the White House sought to cover it up is a C.I.A. officer who was detailed to work at the White House at one point, according to three people familiar with his identity.

      The man has since returned to the C.I.A., the people said. Little else is known about him. His complaint made public Thursday suggested he was an analyst by training and made clear he was steeped in details of American foreign policy toward Europe, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of Ukrainian politics and at least some knowledge of the law.

      The whistle-blower’s expertise will likely add to lawmakers’ confidence about the merits of his complaint, and tamp down allegations that he might have misunderstood what he learned about Mr. Trump. He did not listen directly to a July call between Mr. Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine that is at the center of the political firestorm over the president’s mixing of diplomacy with personal political gain.

      Lawyers for the whistle-blower refused to confirm that he worked for the C.I.A. and said that publishing information about him was dangerous.

      “Any decision to report any perceived identifying information of the whistle-blower is deeply concerning and reckless, as it can place the individual in harm’s way,” said Andrew Bakaj, his lead counsel. “The whistle-blower has a right to anonymity.”

      A C.I.A. spokesman declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, said that protecting the whistle-blower was his office’s highest priority. “We must protect those who demonstrate the courage to report alleged wrongdoing, whether on the battlefield or in the workplace,” Mr. Maguire said at a hearing on Thursday, adding that he did not know the whistle-blower’s identity.

      Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times, said The Times was right to publish information about the whistle-blower. “The role of the whistle-blower, including his credibility and his place in the government, is essential to understanding one of the most important issues facing the country — whether the president of the United States abused power and whether the White House covered it up.”

      Agents, officers and analysts from the military, intelligence and law enforcement communities routinely work at the White House. Often, they work on the National Security Council or help manage secure communications, like calls between the president and foreign leaders.

      The C.I.A. officer did not work on the communications team that handles calls with foreign leaders, according to the people familiar with his identity. He learned about Mr. Trump’s conduct “in the course of official interagency business,” according to the complaint, which was dotted with footnotes about machinations in Kiev and reinforced with public comments by senior Ukrainian officials.

      Officials regularly shared information to “inform policymaking and analysis,” the complaint said. The complaint raises the prospect that the whistle-blower was not detailed to the White House either during the events in question or when he learned about them.

      Mr. Trump took aim at the whistle-blower’s credibility on Thursday, attempting to dismiss his revelations because they were secondhand.

      He also obliquely threatened the whistle-blower or his sources with punishment. “I want to know who’s the person who gave the whistle-blower the information because that’s close to a spy,” Mr. Trump told staff members from the United States Mission to the United Nations before an event there.

      “You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right?” he added. “We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”

      On the call with Mr. Zelensky, Mr. Trump asked him to investigate unsubstantiated allegations of corruption against former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his son and other matters he saw as potentially beneficial to him politically.

      Mr. Trump cajoled Mr. Zelensky to coordinate with Attorney General William P. Barr and the president’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, according to a reconstituted transcript of the call that the White House released on Wednesday. Mr. Zelensky, who was elected in April, agreed to help Mr. Trump. While Ukrainian prosecutors have moved to pursue an inquiry of an oligarch whose company paid Mr. Biden’s son Hunter, they did not allege wrongdoing by the Bidens.

      The call with Mr. Zelensky was originally thought to be a routine matter, the complaint said, and the White House did not restrict it, meaning a number of officials and note takers listened.

      But the whistle-blower said that afterward, White House officials “intervened to ‘lock down’ all records of the phone call,” putting them in a highly classified system meant for discussing covert actions. One White House official called that an abuse because the transcript contained no classified material.

      Notes and rough transcripts of White House calls are typically stored on a computer system that allows senior officials in different departments and agencies to access them, to better coordinate policy.

      Some White House colleagues told the whistle-blower that they were concerned they had witnessed “the president abuse his office for personal gain,” according to the complaint.

      His complaint went beyond the call. During his time at the White House, the whistle-blower became deeply unnerved about how he believed Mr. Trump was broadly seeking to pressure the Ukrainian government to conduct investigations that could benefit him politically.

      “Namely, he sought to pressure the Ukrainian leader to take actions to help the president’s 2020 re-election bid,” the complaint said of Mr. Trump.

      After the call, multiple officials told the whistle-blower that future talks between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky would depend on whether the Ukranians would “play ball” on the investigations he sought.

      The whistle-blower, who lodged his concerns with the inspector general for the intelligence community, has identified at least a half-dozen government officials — including several who work for the White House — who he believes can substantiate his claims. The inspector general has interviewed some of them and found the whistle-blower’s claims credible.

  18. A blow to Mueller convictions: Judge reverses ‘circumstantial’ conviction of Flynn partner in FARA violation

    In a surprise move Tuesday, a federal judge in Virginia acquitted Bijan Rafiekian, a former business partner of Michael Flynn’s who was convicted in July in a case spun off from the special counsel’s investigation.

    Rafiekian, who served as vice chairman of Flynn Intel Group, was convicted July 23 of illegally lobbying on behalf of the Turkish government and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

    But Judge Anthony Trenga reversed the jury decision in a 39-page ruling, saying the government’s evidence against Rafiekian “was insufficient as a matter of law” to justify conviction on either count.

    A massive blaze at a chemical factory in Rouen, France has prompted officials to close schools and direct nearby residents to stay indoors, amid reports that the fire could have a dangerous impact on the environment.

    Around 200 firefighters were called to the scene after the plant, operated by US multinational Lubrizol and owned by billionaire American investor Warren Buffett, caught fire in the early hours of Thursday.

  22. A tour inside discovered Syrian rebels’ cave network in Idlib

    A group of foreign reporters on a trip to Syria organised by the Russian Defense Ministry were on Wednesday shown an elaborate network of caves in the strategic northwestern Idlib province said to have been used as a major rebel base.

    The caves in Latamna were spacious enough to accommodate vehicles and could provide shelter to up to 5,000 rebels, said Syrian Army officers accompanying the group around the caves. Colonel Ali Rami said ten caves were found in total, housing an operations base and even a jail.

    The caves are near the town of Khan Sheikhoun, which fell to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces last month following weeks of a massive offensive by Syrian troops backed by Russian military support.

    Idlib, which lies on the border with Turkey, is the last major rebel stronghold in the country’s eight-year civil war, and Syrian troops have been on the offensive since April 30 to take control of the area.

    The onslaught has provoked frictions between Russia and Turkey, which struck a de-escalation agreement for Idlib a year ago.

    Wants to establish ‘national wealth registry’
    residential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) debuted a proposal to directly tax the wealth of America’s richest families at an even higher rate than primary rival Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.).

    Sanders introduced an expansive wealth tax on Tuesday. The proposal is even more aggressive than that of the Warren campaign. It would levy a progressive wealth tax, starting at 1 percent for fortunes valued between $32 to $50 million and up to 8 percent on those in excess of $10 billion.     The city’s Commission on Human Rights Wednesday released guidelines making it illegal, with huge penalties for violators, for landlords or employers to tell someone to “go back to your country,” or even use the term “illegal” or “alien” “with the intent to demean, humiliate or offend.”

    Chairwoman Carmelyn Malalis, this is crazy, and almost certainly unconstitutional.

    It’s long been verboten in this city to discriminate against someone based on citizenship status in employment, housing or public accommodations. Okay; we certainly don’t want anyone to be ousted from a store or school, or evicted from their apartment, on the suspicion of being undocumented.

    But employment is a special case — under federal law it is unlawful for a person or “to hire, or to recruit or refer for a fee, for employment in the United States an alien knowing the alien is an unauthorized alien.”

    More chillingly, the city now aims to turn the screw against the mere expression that someone may not be a citizen or legal resident.

    “After signing JCPOA, a few European officials visited Iran”, the ayatollah said, referring to the Iran nuclear agreement reached in Vienna in 2015. “They met with me, too. I told them, ‘These visits alone are useless. You should prove your honesty in action’. They didn’t act upon it and declared adherence to the US’s cruel secondary sanctions. There’s no hope in them”.

    The comments came following Washington’s imposition of a new round of economic sanctions against the Iranian Central Bank and sovereign wealth funds on 20 September, with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin arguing that the move is aimed at cutting off “all sources of funds to Iran”. The measure was linked to the attack on Saudi Aramco oil facilities, which was blamed by the US and major European powers on Tehran, despite Yemen’s Houthis group taking responsibility for the incident, with Iran repeatedly denying its involvement.

    On Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said during a speech at the UN General Assembly that the only way Tehran would enter negotiations with Washington is if it returns to the JCPOA and stops imposing sanctions against the country.

    In May 2018, the United States walked out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, and reinstated harsh sanctions on Iran.     The average American working out in a gym while being forced to endure CNN talking heads yammering about Ukraine has to wonder why a country he knows so very little about is all over Washington D.C.

    How did a minor country intersect with three presidential campaigns, those of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump, the Mueller investigation and the business dealings of the Biden clan?

    Ukraine’s government is a dysfunctional oligarchy that exists in a state of permanent conflict between billionaires, energy interests, nationalists, Russian front groups, European front groups and street thugs. To make matters more confusing, some of those categories overlap and sometimes shift back and forth.

    The Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in the region. Its per capita income is miserable. Its life expectancy is slightly higher than that of Syria. Its real prize is a complex energy sector interwoven with those of Russia and the European Union. Every reason why Ukraine has been in the news comes back to that energy sector and its role in the power balance between Russia, Europe and the United States.

    Without that energy sector, the Ukraine would have wallowed quietly in a morass of corruption. Instead its scandals touch off explosions in Moscow, Brussels and Washington D.C. because they originate there.

  43. SPAIN – DAESH operative arrested in Algeciras with training manuals on how to carry out violent attacks

    The Spanish National Police says it has arrested and detained a DAESH operative in Algeciras.

    The 51-year-old reportedly had documentation showing him how to carry out violent attacks with explosives, guns and cars. The Policia Nacional captured on video the moment they moved in to arrest the suspect.

    The Moroccan national had reportedly been very active on social media showing support for the terrorist organisation DAESH. He apparently devoted a lot of his day compulsively accessing social networks, downloading, storing and viewing manuals, as well as pro-jihadist videos. While sitting in cafes in Algeciras on his mobile phone, he openly discussed his support for radical groups and his contempt for the West.

    He was allegedly involved in more than 20 messaging groups. Some were exclusively for members of DAESH or ISIS, which had made threats against Spain. In other groups he exchanged messages with terrorist leaders actively involved in conflict zones like Syria.

    The suspect was apparently self-taught but highly radicalised, having become indoctrinated through online propaganda. The Policia Nacional said he did not attempt to hide his involvement with the terrorist group, and openly demonstrated animosity towards the West.

    He is being held without bail.
