Iran: ‘Learn from this warning’ – Rouhani on Saudi oil attacks
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani commented on the recent drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities, claiming that this was a “warning” from Yemenis, speaking at a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.
“Who started this conflict? Yemenis are not the initiators. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, US, some European countries and the Zionist regime were the ones who started the war in this region and destroyed Yemen,” said the Iranian President.
Rouhani added: “Yemenis have not targeted a hospital, a school, or a grocery market [as Saudis did]; they attacked an industrial centre in order to warn you. Learn from this warning and think about putting out the fire in this region.”
The drone attacks took place on September 14 at an oil processing facility in Abqaiq and the Khurais oil field, effectively cutting 5.7 million barrels per day or 5 per cent of global output. Houthi militants operating in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack. However, US authorities have accused Iran of the attacks, which Iran has rejected.

The security service told media outlets that the suspects had been spotted a day before in a private house in the eastern part of the city.
Russian media later reported, citing a source that law enforcement officers clashed with the extremists at around 6:00 a.m. and managed to shoot two suspects dead. The FSB noted that the suspects refused to surrender, adding that both were identified after the operation. According to reports, there were no casualties among civilians or security service troops.”

“Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has labelled the European Union’s border agency Frontex a “travel agency”, stating that Member States should protect the external borders.
The Hungarian minister called the European Union (EU) “aimless” on the topic of migration stating in comments reported by Die Welt: “Frontex is a travel agency. Rather, those countries that have an external EU border should also protect them.”
On migration, Szijjártó said that Hungary “pursues the policy of common sense, even if we are criticised for it. There are still unfair criticisms of Hungary and distorted representations of domestic developments. But we note with approval that European approval has grown in favour of our position on the refugee issue.”
Earlier this week, Hungary faced the ongoing Article 7 procedure which could see the country stripped of voting rights and sanctioned due to various allegations including a lack of press freedom, corruption, and rule of law issues.
“It is a fact that the current rule of law is characterised by double standards. Budapest is criticised for alleged violations of the constitution, while Finland, for example, does not even have a constitutional court,” Szijjártó said.
He went on to add: “We have experienced in Hungary that whenever leftists or liberals do not win, the result is defamed as undemocratic. Obviously it does not matter to our critics that we win election after election in an unobjectionable manner. The two-thirds majority did not fall to us in the lottery!”
Szijjártó is not alone on having made negative comments about Frontex. Populist National Rally leader Marine Le Pen has also been critical of the agency stating in May that “the EU is a toxic accelerator of massive immigration and Frontex is the reception, support and distribution agency”.
Former Austrian Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache, who resigned due to scandal earlier this year, went even further, calling Frontex a “people-trafficking organisation”.”

“The Norwegian government has deported 15 migrants with ties to Islamic State, withdrawing their residency permits.
Four of those deported saw their decisions come since May and according to Justice Minister Jøran Kallmyr, the vast majority of those deported were either Islamic State fighters or women who bore children to members of the terror group, NRK reports.
“They have been abroad for more than two years after leaving Norway. So there is an opening in the asylum rules so that we can withdraw the residence permit,” Kallmyr said.
Around 100 Norwegians travelled overseas to fight for radical Islamic terror groups, 60 of which were foreign nationals with Norwegian residency.
Since May, the Norwegian government has actively stripped Islamic State members of their residency permits as opposed to the prior policy of simply waiting for them to expire. The previous policy also forced Norway to take in foreign fighters.
The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) has actively worked with the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) to determine those with an affiliation to Islamic terror groups, Kallmyr said and added that the PST had sent a list of around 40 foreign fighters to the agency.
“We will make sure that no one in this portfolio can return to Norway. There is still some information gathering that remains. Many are believed to be dead, but since we do not have verification that they have died, we will expel them as well,” Kallmyr added.
The Norwegian approach to Islamic State fighters is in stark contrast to that of neighbouring Sweden.
Earlier this year, Swedish terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp suggested Sweden refuse to allow in Islamic State members because unlike Norway, there were few laws to enable their prosecution once back in the country.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has also refused to consider the idea of stripping the citizenships from Islamic State members, a policy which the UK has used on both “Jihadi Jack” Jack Letts and ISIS bride Shamima Begum.”

He had previously warned that the public prosecution department is not doing enough to protect crown witnesses. A satellite image taken this week shows the aftermath of a massive U.S. bombing campaign against an “ISIS-infested” island in northern Iraq.
American jets dropped more than 80,000 pounds of laser-guided bombs on Qanus Island on Tuesday. The new image from Planet Labs, Inc., shows smoking craters in decimated areas that were previously covered in green foliage and forest.
The bombing was meant to destroy an area the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group was using for operations in the region, U.S. officials said. Iraqi forces searched and cleared the area following the bombing.
Wim Zwijnenburg, a senior researcher at PAX, a Dutch nongovernmental organization specializing in conflict and the environment, told Fox News that historical images show the island doesn’t have any structures, indicating it’s unlikely there are underground facilities.
Zwijnenburg said the island, on the Tigris River south of Mosul, has been targeted in the past. The nearest U.S. military presence is at Qayyarah Airfield West, about 10 miles away; it’s occupied by the U.S.-led coalition battling the terrorist group.
Roughly a dozen terrorists were killed in a previous airstrike on the island, Col. Myles B. Caggins III, spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), told Fox News on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) told Business Insider that some 25 ISIS fighters were killed on the island, which they used “like a hotel” when traveling from Syria to Iraq. U.S. officials have also said the island is a “major transit hub” for ISIS fighters in and out of Syria.
U.S. officials said F-15 and F-35 jets dropped the bombs. Caggins said GBU-31 munitions were dropped.
“The coalition applies rigorous standards to our targeting process and takes extraordinary efforts to protect noncombatants,” Caggins said, adding that Iraqi Special Forces inspected and cleared the area following the bombing.
“Follow-on ground clearance operations were conducted by the 2nd Iraqi Special Operations Forces Battalion to dismantle a major transit hub for Daesh [ISIS] members moving from Syria and the Jazeera desert into Mosul, Makhmour and the Kirkuk region,” he said.
“This airstrike denied ISIS terrain and hiding areas for smuggling lethal aid and fighters,” he added. “The strikes enabled the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service’s ground clearance operation on Qanus Island.”
U.S. jets have doubled the number of airstrikes targeting ISIS in the past month, according to new U.S. Air Force strike data. American jets have dropped 28 percent more bombs on the Taliban and an ISIS affiliate in August than they did in the previous month.
In August, 800 bombs were dropped against targets in Afghanistan – the most since November 2018.
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., questioned Thursday why an F-35 fighter would be used in this week’s attack. “I have real concerns about using a fifth-generation [F-35 stealth] aircraft to strike a bunch of terrorists hiding in the bushes,” he said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.
U.S. military officials say operations against the Taliban in Afghanistan could ramp up after the militant group claimed responsibility for two recent bombings in Kabul that killed dozens, including an American soldier. President Trump canceled planned high-level meetings this past weekend at Camp David with the Taliban and Afghan government over the attacks.

Trump says he has ordered substantial increase of Iran sanctions

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he had ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “substantially increase sanctions” imposed on Iran, amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
He did not give details on the move, which follows weekend attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia that some U.S. officials blamed on Iran. Iran has denied those allegations.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed responsibility for the strikes on a Saudi oil field and the world’s largest crude processing plant. The attacks disrupted global oil supplies.
Saudi Arabia has said oil production would be fully recovered by the end of the month.

Expert: North Korea’s Nuclear Arsenal May Grow up to 40 Bombs by 2020

An expert from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which tracks military development around the world, told South Korean reporters on Monday the communist regime in North Korea may have as many as 40 nuclear weapons by the end of the year.
The research institute estimated that Pyongyang controlled between 20 and 30 nuclear weapons by the end of 2018.

“The so-called Sandviken report published in 2014 by Sweden’s largest daily Dagens Nyheter promised the rural Swedish municipality a mind-boggling half a billion kronor in immigration-related gains. Today, the municipality is mired in debt.
Sweden’s Sandviken Municipality, which according to a widely-criticised report by an acclaimed consulting company should have been turned into a land of milk and honey owing to immigration, is facing a record budget defecit of SEK 67 million (almost $7 million).
In 2014, a report prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the the local authorities, promised Sandviken, a municipality of 40,000 located in Gävleborg County north of Stockholm, an astonishing annual profit of SEK 500 million (over $51 million) “due to foreign-born residents”.
Five years later, the promised mountains and marvels are still to materialise, as the municipality is cruising toward a record budget deficit that will be the fourth-largest in the entire country.
“It was a fantasy scenario that was painted up. The report was incorrect from the start. How could anyone stand behind it?” local politician Jonny Bratberg of the Moderate Party told the daily newspaper Expressen.
The chairman of the municipal council, Social Democrat Peter Kärnström, cited “unfavourable demographics” with many children and elderly. At present, the municipality needs 800 school places, while elderly care is in need of expansion as well amid ballooning costs.
“It’s like in all other municipalities, the situation is strained”, Peter Kärnström told Expressen, noting that the municipality needs more money from the outside. “If all of Sweden were to live like this, you must also have an equalising system that reflects that”, he said.
Since Sandviken Municipality currently lacks a slogan (and doesn’t need one, according to Kärnström), jesters were quick with handy solutions. Journalist and debater Thomas Gür proposed “Sandviken – where virtue is rampant and foolishness reigns supreme”. Christian Sonesson, the chairman of Staffanstorp Municipality, suggested “Sandviken – where gold turns to sand”, alluding to its name that literally translates as “Sand Bay”. Another sharp suggestion included “Sandviken – you can count on us”.
In recent years, the so-called “Sandviken report” has been widely questioned and ridiculed in Sweden. When confronted by the news outlet Nyheter Idag, Peter Wolodarski, the editor-in-chief of Dagens Nyheter, the country’s leading daily that published the report in 2014, admitted that “it was not a good article”. However, the newspaper has refused to retract the article.
Of late, several Swedish municipalities have resisted accepting more newly arrived immigrants. Sölvesborg’s right-wing Sweden Democrat Mayor Louise Erixon recently created a stir by suggesting the “red-led” Social Democrat municipalities take over Sölvesborg’s newcomers, because they have claimed it’s “economically beneficial” and sarcastically referencing Sandviken.”
Hong Kong horse races, fireworks called off amid protest threat
HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong’s Jockey Club canceled all races planned for Wednesday after pro-democracy protesters said they would target the Happy Valley racecourse where a horse part-owned by a pro-China lawmaker was due to run.
The government also said fireworks to mark Chinese National Day on Oct. 1 had been called off.

The Jockey Club said it had been “monitoring the situation” closely in Chinese-ruled Hong Kong, which has been rocked my more than three months of sometimes violent protests.
“It has conducted a thorough risk assessment of the race meeting tonight and concluded that it should be canceled in order to preserve the security and safety of people and horses,” the club said in a statement, without specifically mentioning the protests.
A horse called Hong Kong Bet that had been due to run in the evening program is part-owned by lawmaker Junius Ho, who has taken a firm line on the protesters, calling them “black-shirted thugs”.

In ‘red flag’ gun bill, House Dems want to flag high-risk individuals; just not police-identified gang members
Last week, House Democrats advanced their bill to encourage states to adopt “red flag” laws for removing guns and ammunition from dangerous persons. But in the process, Democrats rejected a Republican-proposed amendment that would have red-flagged individuals identified by law enforcement as gang members.
The Democrats’ reasoning was that law enforcement lists of gang members may have errors in them. As the Washington Examiner notes, similar logic has been behind Republican objections to using the terrorism no-fly list for denying weapons purchases from licensed dealers.
Democrats in fact were in favor of a “no fly, no buy” policy for flagging gun-purchase applicants. When the list was about links to terrorism, they weren’t worried about a few errors here and there. It was Republicans who were concerned at the time about the likelihood of erroneous placement on the no-fly list.
There’s a difference between the no-fly list and law enforcement identification of gang members, however. The law enforcement lists are based on the stringent standard of probable cause for indictment in gang-involved crimes. Moreover, the GOP amendment to the Democrats’ current “red flag” bill specified that individuals identified as gang members could only be red-flagged, for gun possession purposes, if they were indictable under a probable cause standard.

The gist of the article is that this was probably the missile used in an earlier attack by the Houthis on Abha Airport, and may have been used in the 14 Sep attacks. The launch point(s) could still have been in Iran. Although the missile was apparently launched from Yemen for the Abha Airport attack, and the Houthis took credit (and are touting the Quds 1 as “their” missile), the missile would presumably have been developed by Iran. My question: if not developed and/or assembled physically in Iran, perhaps in Syria/Lebanon, where we’ve been watching infrastructure for such activities being built since 2014? Note: the Pentagon is supposed to publish an assessment before week’s end, so there’s not a lot of use in going down every rat-hole for speculation. This one rises above the noise, however.]

On September 14, several explosions rocked the Khurais oilfield as well as the Abqaiq refinery, one of Saudi Arabia’s most vital petrochemical installations. Several hours later, the Houthis claimed that they had targeted both facilities with ten drones as part of their “Balance of Deterrence” campaign.
What made this attack different from other recorded Houthi drone attacks was not only the unprecedented amount of material damage caused but also lingering doubt about the nature and the attribution of the attack. First, a video allegedly showing flying objects entering Kuwaiti airspace led to speculation that like a previous “Houthi” drone attack this strike might actually have originated in Iraq or even Iran. While the video remains unverified, the fact that the Kuwaiti government launched a probe into the issue lends some credence to the idea that something might have happened over Kuwait that day. Speculation about the origins of the attack was further fueled by a tweet by Mike Pompeo in which he claimed that there was no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.

Hinweise auf ein solches Delikt hatten Rechtsmediziner aber nicht gefunden, so dass selbst die Oberstaatsanwältin in ihrem Plädoyer davon abrückte.

Last week, Gaza City, which is ruled by the Palestinian Islamist terror group, Hamas, experienced explosions at two Hamas police checkpoints that killed three policemen. If one rationally suspected that it was the work of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), one would be proven wrong. In fact, it was perpetrated by the suicide bombers of the Islamic State in the Sinai Peninsula. The group is an affiliate of the Islamic State or ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria). The Hamas authorities in Gaza not only charged the fellow jihadist group of perpetrating the attacks but began mass arrests of the Islamic State supporters, as well as other Salafist groups throughout the Gaza Strip. And yet, it is not the first time the Islamic State Sinai branch and Hamas have clashed.
Hamas’ founder, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, known as the “blind sheik,” who proudly declared at the onset of the Second Intifada, that “Hamas leaders wish to be martyrs and are not scared of death.” This implies that Hamas operatives wish for death in a suicide bombing is stronger than the Israelis will for life. It seems that now other extremist jihadists, whether belonging to ISIS or its imitators, have a stronger motivation to be martyrs and join ‘72 black-eyed virgins in paradise,’ than do the Hamas terrorists.

As the Washington Examiner put it, this was “so that Hollywood Democrats could refuse to work with them in the future.” As RT.com had it, this drew “natural comparisons to the late Sen. Joe McCarthy’s efforts in the 1950s to rid Hollywood of ‘Communist sympathizers.’” These efforts might pack more clout if they had the history right.
The primary investigator of Communism in Hollywood was a House committee that started with a probe of fascism during the 1930s, and as William F. Buckley said, should have been called the Committee to Investigate Fascism and Communism. It wound up being called the House Committee on Un-American Activities and after World War II, congressional sleuths were after Communist International (Comintern) agent Gerhart Eisler, whose brother Hanns Eisler was a composer in Hollywood.

Equally urgent is the revision of a foreign-policy paradigm many years in years in the making and mired in received wisdom. It took root after World War II ended the malign ideologies of fascism, Nazism, and Japanese racist militarism. Even though those murderous movements put the lie to the long dream of a global “harmony of interests” institutionalized in transnational treaties and supranational organizations, the West created the UN, NATO, the World Bank, and other global institutions that would help contain the Soviet Union while the global economy increased wealth and distributed it more widely. The collapse of the Soviet Union fed the illusion that the triumph of liberal democracy was assured, and that its last ideological rival was dispatched without another world war.

During the 17 years he has ruled NATO-member Turkey, the country’s Islamist strongman, President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, has rarely missed an opportunity stealthily to convert Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s secular, pro-Western establishment into a rogue state hostile to Western interests. Erdo?an now wants to make it a rogue state with nuclear weapons.
“They say we can’t have nuclear-tipped missiles, though some have them. This, I can’t accept,” Erdo?an said in a September 4 speech, while conveniently forgetting that Turkey has signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1980. In other words, Turkey’s elected leader publicly declares that he intends to breach an international treaty signed by his country. Turkey is also a signatory to the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which bans all nuclear detonations, for any purpose.
For several decades, Turkey, being a staunch NATO ally, was viewed as the trusted custodian of some of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. In the early 1960s, the U.S. started stockpiling nuclear warheads at the Turkish military’s four main airbases (Ankara Mürted, Malatya Erhaç, Eski?ehir and Bal?kesir). If ordered, Turkish air force pilots were tasked with hitting designated Warsaw Pact targets.
Is Erdo?an Solely Responsible for Turkish Foreign Policy?
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Many believe Turkey will return to “Western normality” as soon as Recep Tayyip Erdo?an finishes his political career. But Turkey’s behavior is influenced by the systemic restructuring of the international arena after the end of the Cold War more than it is by Erdo?an’s aura, as was apparent in the 1990s prior to his advent. It is unwise to anticipate a significant change in Turkish foreign policy once Erdo?an leaves the scene.
Turkey’s moves in the Mediterranean have been marked for some time by zigzagging. On the one hand, Ankara seems willing to sacrifice its credibility as a NATO member in order to obtain the Russian S-400 Triumph and safeguard RUSATOM’s help in constructing nuclear power plants. On the other hand, it has distanced itself from Moscow’s Syria policy and champions every armed Sunni group operating there. In Libya, too, Turkey supports the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. Ankara’s rhetoric continually undermines the status of the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq, which deeply irritates the US State Department, to put it mildly.
To all this must be added Turkey’s anti-Israel position, which reflects a trendy antisemitism among next-generation officials of AKP who seem to have neither the religious clarity nor the political acumen of their ideological forefathers. Nor can we ignore the harassment of Greece and Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, which is a fundamental destabilizing factor in the regional balance of power.

Jack Letts, dubbed “Jihadi Jack”, the British convert to Islam who travelled to Syria in 2014 to join ISIS, has been stripped of his British citizenship. The former dual-national, whose British mother and Canadian father stand by their son, exchanged his picturesque hometown of Oxford for Raqqa, to join the ranks of ISIS. He is currently awaiting his fate in the custody of Kurdish forces.
Letts, who had previously claimed to be an “enemy of Britain” and had posted on social media messages, such as “his threat to behead a group of young British soldiers on Facebook”, now says that he regrets his past misdeeds, and the pain he has caused his parents. “I feel guilty, because I am the reason (my parents) are going through this.” He told a Sky News reporter in June, evidently oblivious to the fact that his actions caused a lot more harm than merely upsetting his parents — both of whom received a suspended prison sentence for — “making money available for a terrorist purpose”.
Separately, Shamima Begum, one of three British schoolgirls who hatched and executed a plan to escape their family homes in East London and head for Syria in 2015, suffered a similar fate in February. Begum, after also having had her citizenship revoked, now languishes in a Syrian refugee camp.
