“Turkey’s Interior Ministry stated on Tuesday that the trial court sentenced 41 suspended mayors for a total of over 237 years on the grounds of terror and terror related crimes, reports Anadolu Agency.
Out of 94 mayors, 41 of them were sentenced to over 237 years of imprisonment for terror-related crimes.
Prior to the March 31 local elections, Interior Ministry dismissed 94 mayors in accordance with the Constitution’s law on municipalities concerning terror crimes and appointed the governors, deputy governors and district governors as deputies.
20 suspended mayors due to terror crimes are pending trial behind bars and 57 of them are released on pending trial.
One of those who was dismissed was acquitted.
In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.”

“Egypt’s Al-Azhar Observatory for Countering Extremism received on Tuesday Gilles de Kerchove, the European Union’s counterterrorism coordinator, to review the latest efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
Tarek Shaaban, the General Coordinator of Al-Azhar Observatory, discussed the efforts of the Observatory and the work mechanisms of its various units.
Shaaban said that the Observatory’s approach is based on monitoring, translating and analysing reports issued by terrorist groups in foreign languages, as well as monitoring reports issued by research centres studying extremism.
The EU counterterrorism coordinator praised the role of Al-Azhar Observatory in confronting extremist ideologies and the importance of its mission in exposing the falsity of extremist groups’ ideologies, stressing the necessity of intensifying cooperation between the Observatory and entitled authorities in Europe to combat terrorism and combining international efforts in this regard.
In 2015, Al-Azhar institution created the Al-Azhar Observatory to respond to erroneous and extremist interpretations of Islam, especially those which promote violence. The Observatory’s website produces content in 10 different languages.
Egypt’s Al-Azhar institution is considered the world’s oldest institute of Sunni Islamic learning.”

“Ragusa police on Tuesday detained the alleged skipper of a boat carrying 104 migrants who were rescued by the Eleonore ship operated by German NGO Mission lifeline. The Eleonore on Monday docked on Pozzallo and was seized by authorities for not abiding by a ban to enter Italian waters. The 18-year-old Sudanese suspect is under investigation on charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, investigative sources said.
The suspect was identified after Ragusa police questioned several witnesses, the sources said.
The migrants said they left Libya’s coast after living for a few months at a connection house. They said that they paid on average 1,500 euros each to reach Europe.
The alleged smuggler reportedly skippered the boat for 15 hours before it was rescued off Libya’s coast, police said.
Witnesses described with extreme precision the suspect’s conduct before and after departure ahead of the rescue operation, investigators said.
Meanwhile the European Commission has said that an agreement has been reached with five member States to reallocate the migrants who will be distributed in Germany, Luxembourg, Ireland, Portugal and France. The Commission took charge of coordinating hosting measures at Germany’s request, said a Commission spokesperson, adding that it was not involved directly in the cases of the Mare Jonio and Alan Kurdi vessels.”
