Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Austria: A machete attack by a suspected Moroccan+++
At Landhausplatz square in Innsbruck there was an attack with a machete shortly after 06: 00 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the police, a 19-year-old Moroccan was seriously injured and a group of four men was present at the Landhausplatz square when a male came running in and probably attacked the 19-year-old with a machete without any reason. The witnesses reported that the perpetrator had tried 6 to 7 times to attack the victim with the machete both on his thigh and face.According to initial information from the Innsbruck Hospital, the victim was seriously but not fatally injured by the incident. The man suffered two deep cuts on both thighs and had to be treated surgically at the Innsbruck Hospital. The investigations and witness interviews led to a possible suspect, a 31-year-old Moroccan citizen. According to the police, the search for the perpetrator, which was immediately initiated, has so far been unsuccessful.

  2. The currency war between U.S. and Red China continues. It’s like the biggest game of chicken ever. Of course the Chicoms always have an invisible gun at the back of their skulls lest they fail to reinvigorate their economy and spark revolt. And you’ve got the Chinese penchant for gambling which may or may not come into play. On the other side there is PT, who most certainly loves big-stakes poker. The question is does the currency war become a shooting war, and what will be the spark? I believe PT is fully apprised of the current meaning of fiat, gold and the inevitability of debt reconciliation for ALL the world’s debtors. This means he has thought it through and has a grasp of the end game, where the players sit down to show their true gold stocks. He who has the gold makes the rules.

    • Despite the propaganda from the left PT never makes any type of policy statement or change without knowing all of the factors. You are asking if the currency war will become a shooting war? I can’t remember his name or the actual time shortly after Trump took office and started pushing back one of the Military/International Relations experts said that both Russia and China think they can win a shooting war with us (as long as it doesn’t go nuclear). He also added that they can’t win even if it is both at the same time but that he thought it was going to take a thunderous conventional war of 6 months to a couple of years to convience them of this fact. When you add in the shaky nature of the Chinese economy and the economic problems in Russia you have to wonder if one or both (probably just China but Putin is a gambler also) won’t try a “military adventure” to try and save their control over their nations.

The problems between India and Pakistan, the trouble in Hong Kong and to a leser extent the Iranian actions in the Gulf combined with the Turkish actions in the Med are all giving Xi and Putin hope that the US will find itself way over extended around the world and become willing to let either Europe or the Far East take care of their own problems.

  3. BBC – Far-right violence: Berlin district targeted

Since the refugee crisis three years ago, politicians at every level are reporting an increase in threats and violence from the far-right in Germany.

Two mayors have been stabbed, and hundreds of local mayors say they have been physically assaulted.

But in one area of Berlin, local residents say it’s not just politicians being targeted. They say that anyone who is critical of the far-right is at risk.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly told lawmakers and aides in private conversations that he is open to endorsing extensive background checks in the wake of two mass shootings, prompting a warning from the National Rifle Association and concerns among White House aides, according to lawmakers and administration officials.

Trump, speaking to reporters Wednesday before visiting Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, where weekend shootings left 31 dead, said there “was great appetite for background checks” amid an outcry over government inaction in the face of repeated mass shootings.

  8. NUKE BLAST PANIC Radiation leak in Russia after huge explosion at ballistic missile testing facility

A HUGE explosion at a ballistic missile testing facility in Russia has killed two people and started a radiation leak.

A further four people are said to have been injured.

The two people that died were civilian specialists while those who were injured were a mix of civilians and military personnel. The military unit where the fire occurred is located in the village of Nenoksa, near Arkhangelsk, where ballistic missiles are tested for the Russian Navy.

The blast at the military training ground near Arkhangelsk was due to a jet engine exploding, the press service of the Ministry of Defence said.

A source told RIA News in Russia: “Hospitals in the Arkhangelsk region are ready for the possible reception of the victims of the incident near Nenoksa.”

Russian officials initially tried to play down the radiation leak, saying the levels were normal.

A statement from the ministry said: “During testing of a liquid jet engine an explosion and combustion of the product occurred.

  9. Hollywood blockbuster that satirizes killing of ‘deplorables’ causes outrage: ‘Demented and evil’

A controversial movie about privileged vacationers hunting “deplorables” for sport is ruffling feathers more than a month before its scheduled release and after tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

“The Hunt” is billed as a satire that follows wealthy thrill-seekers taking a private jet to a five-star resort where they embark on a “deeply rewarding” expedition that involves hunting down and killing designated humans. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday that “Universal is re-evaluating its strategy for the certain-to-be-controversial satire” following the shootings after ESPN reportedly pulled a trailer for the film that had been previously cleared to air on the sports network.

“The violent, R-rated film from producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse follows a dozen MAGA types who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being stalked for sport by elite liberals,” THR’s Kim Masters wrote. “It features guns blazing along with other ultra-violent killings as the elites pick off their prey.”

    UPDATED 7:29 AM PT — Thursday, August 8, 2019

Authorities in Southern California say a deadly stabbing spree, which left four people dead in Orange County, appears to be a random attack.

Police say the 33-year-old male suspect was arrested Wednesday after allegedly committing a string of robberies and knife attacks over the course of two hours across the cities of Garden Grove and Santa Ana.

Authorities tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a 7-Eleven convenience store, where he was discovered armed with a knife and firearm. Officials say the firearm was taken from a security guard, who was fatally stabbed during the incident.

  11. Top Hong Kong police commander recalled from retirement as violence escalates

HONG KONG (Reuters) – The police commander who oversaw pro-democracy demonstrations that roiled Hong Kong in 2014 has been recalled from retirement to help deal with the violent protests convulsing the Chinese-ruled city, two sources with knowledge of the move told Reuters.

The sources, both senior government security officials, said former deputy police commissioner Alan Lau Yip-shing, planned to meet top-level ground commanders on Friday.

The move comes ahead of yet another weekend of protests across the former British colony, including a three-day rally at the international airport, that have prompted travel warnings from countries including the United States and Australia.

“The protests and confrontations have spilled over into neighborhoods other than those where the police have permitted marches or rallies,” said an advisory posted on the website of the U.S. State Department on Wednesday.

What began as protests against a bill that would have allowed people in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China for trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party have evolved into a broader backlash against the city’s government, with flash mob-style demonstrations on an almost daily basis.

  12. Pakistan halts train service to India, bans films over Kashmir change

ISLAMABAD/SRINIGAR, India (Reuters) – Pakistan halted its main train service to India on Thursday and banned Indian films as it exerted diplomatic pressure on New Delhi for revoking the special status of Kashmir, the region at the heart of 70 years of hostility between them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government this week withdrew Muslim majority Jammu and Kashmir’s right to frame its own laws and allowed people from outside the region to buy property there in a bid to tighten its grip over the contested region.

Kashmir remained under a communications blackout on Thursday with mobile networks and internet services suspended and at least 300 politicians and separatists in detention to prevent protests, according to police, media and political leaders.

  13. Under Obama, U.S. gov’t funded Mexico’s torture of its own migrants: Where was the Left’s outrage?
By Ben Bowles August 8, 2019

Migrants detained in U.S. custody are forced to drink out of toilets. And if you believe that, I have a bridge you might be interested in buying.

Liberals in Congress are hypercritical of President Donald Trump for placing alien children in “cages” — never mind that Obama Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johsnon recently affirmed that said cages were constructed by the Obama administration. Last week, presidential contender Julian Castro was asked explain attacks he has mounted on Trump immigration practices that he praised under Obama. He couldn’t.

Although Democrats and their water carriers media are loath to admit it, their stern disapproval of Trump’s handing of the crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border is a reflection of their personal dislike of him as a person and nothing more. When Obama was at the helm, many of the same problems — and “solutions” — obtained, but they went unnoticed by Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and the press.

Exhibit A is an article that ran in The Guardian in April 2016 that chronicled a border crisis of an entirely different sort. The chief culprit in this case was not the U.S. but Mexico, which was

  14. ‘Death Camps for Trump Supporters’ fliers hung in Long Island community
By Howard Portnoy August 7, 2019

Apparently, incendiary rhetoric can fire up the party base, leading to death threats. At least that’s the case when the source of the emotionally charged language is Democratic lawmakers and the legacy media, which for months now have been accusing Donald Trump of racism, xenophobia, and other forms of bigotry.

Like the claim made on air yesterday by MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace that Donald Trump is “talking about exterminating Latinos,” there is no basis in fact for any of these allegations. But that hasn’t stirred the liberal base from becoming fired up over them.

Some in the village of Patchogue, an hour and a half outside New York City, have even taken to posting fliers on telephone polls and parking meters reading “Death Camps For Trump Supporters Now!”

  15. MSNBC: Former FBI official suggests Trump speech on mass shootings contained numerology allusion to Nazism
    By J.E. Dyer August 7, 2019

Figliuzzi is now a contributor to NBC News. And on Tuesday 6 August 2019, he spoke with Brian Williams on MSNBC about Trump and “white supremacy,” discussing the latter as a systematic terrorism problem.

Figliuzzi was disappointed in Trump’s speech condemning “white supremacy.” One thing he was disappointed in was Trump calling on all Americans to condemn invidious “whiteness” ideologies, instead of saying “I condemn” those ideologies. Figliuzzi asserted that “whiteness” radicals would take heart from that distinction, hearing in it an affirmation that Trump was merely checking a ritual box for public consumption. Trump, according to Figliuzzi, could be “heard” as saying he himself didn’t really condemn the evil ideologies.

Only if you already assume Trump is a “whiteness” ideologue would you have any reason to hear him in these terms. There is no reason to make that assumption, nor has there ever been. (Trump did, in fact, affirmatively condemn “whiteness” ideologies multiple times during the 2016 campaign.) Saying over and over again that opposing illegal migration is the same thing as being a “whiteness” ideologue doesn’t make it so. (It does, frankly, make the repeater come off as psychotic.)

  16. CNN – India seeks to tighten control over Kashmir and Jammu

India’s parliament voted to reclassify the state of Jammu and Kashmir as a union territory, giving the government in New Delhi greater authority over the country’s only Muslim-majority region.

Tens of thousands of additional Indian troops have been deployed into the already heavily militarized region to head off unrest, and several prominent politicians have been placed under house arrest.

The region remains in lockdown amid a communications blackout, with landline connections, internet and mobile coverage all suspended.

    • SKY News – Indian PM Modi defends ‘historic’ decision to revoke special status

    • channel 4 – Kashmir communications blackout – but India PM Modi pledges ‘bright future’

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised a bright new future for the state of Kashmir that he’s had in total lockdown for the past four days.

In a national address he pledged new jobs, new infrastructure and cultural development.

But with more than 500 people reportedly arrested in Indian controlled Kashmir and anger growing in neighbouring Pakistan, tension continues to rise.

      • Why does india want a country full of mozlems ?they are nothing but trouble wherever they are,do the Indians think that it is better to have them under their control, than semi independent Pakistani control,or perhaps raw materials and minerals are at the bottom of it all.

        • This was my inner thoughts exactly. India seems determined to get islamic influence under control. They banned triple talak, or blackmail divorce, as it should be called in English, which is a genuine push back against sharia existing within the framework of Indian law. This was fantastic.

But the only real answer is less muslims. So why do they want this area? There must be more to it. Part if probably lies with the long-march strategy of Pakistan to carve up India by getting more and more territory for islam.

I believe that they are trying to establish a corridor through India from Pakistan to a Sikh shrine in India, or something like that.

Following video is from July 10th this year.

          https://youtu.be/kmFQqFixMJI

So there may be a geopolitical, or cartographic, if you like, explanation as much as resource based one. I think the Indians do not want their country carved up by muslims more than it already is.

Remember, Pakistan itself was part of India, but as muslims refused to live in a multicultural society with Hindus etc. they demanded their own sharia law state. So the carving up and swallowing of India continued, and Pakistan was created.

I see the same thing happening soon in the UK for that matter. The British will not be able to pretend that they have sovereignty over Islamic areas much longer and some kind of official recognition of zones of control will have to be made so women and homosexuals and Jewish people all know that if they go to these areas, the British state can not help them.

  18. MEMRI Turkish Parliament Speaker: Any US Attempt to Prevent Us Acquiring F-35 Jets Would Impact Relations

Mustafa Sentop, the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, said in an August 5 2019 Arabic-language interview on Russia Today TV that Turkey’s recent deal to acquire S-400 missile systems from Russia does not have any implications on Turkey’s commitment to NATO or on its alliance with the United States, despite American objection to the deal.

Saying that using the S-400 deal as a pretext for expelling Turkey from NATO is absurd, Sentop explained that Turkey had initially attempted to purchase Patriot missiles systems from the U.S., but that when the deal fell through and when NATO withdrew its Patriot batteries from Turkey in 2015, Turkey had no choice but to seek out other options for its defense.

Sentop also said that any attempt on the part of the U.S. to sanction Turkey by means of preventing it from acquiring F-35 jets would have catastrophic implications on U.S.-Turkey relations, particularly since Turkey has played a part in the F-35 project.

ALBANY — While the nation’s media is focused on the Dayton, OH and El Paso, TX shootings, anti-gunners are happily using the political cover to ram through anti-gun legislation.

These knives, often called “undetectable knives” or “ghost knives” are made from carbon fiber or ceramic, and due to their composition, do not set off metal detectors.

Cuomo said, “Undetectable knives are meant to be used by trained members of our police and military forces for covert operations — not regular civilians attempting to sneak weapons past metal detectors,” Cuomo said.

  24. Ilhan Omar Claims “White Men” Are Greater Threat Than Jihadis
    Here’s why she’s wrong.
    August 8, 2019
    Robert Spencer

The ever-controversial Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently claimed that “our country [in this case she meant the United States, not Somalia] should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country.” She called for “profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.” As crazy as this sounds, it is a commonplace claim on the Left these days. But that doesn’t make it even remotely true.

No, they don’t. It is a false claim that “white men” or “right-wing extremists” are a bigger threat to Americans than Islamic jihad terrorists. As I noted in November 2018 when CNN’s Don Lemon made the same claim, this claim originated with an April 2017 Government Accountability Office (GAO) study that counted 106 people killed in 62 attacks by “far-right violent extremists,” as compared to 119 people killed in 23 attacks by “radical Islamist violent extremists.”

That’s it then, right? 39 more attacks by “far-right violent extremists” than by “radical Islamist violent extremists.” Although 13 more people were killed in the jihad attacks, this establishes definitively that America has a much bigger problem with the “far-right” than with jihadis, right?

No. One major problem with the Government Accountability Office study is clear on page 6 of its report, where you will see that the count of fatalities committed by “far right wing extremists” and “radical Islamist extremists” begins on September 12, 2001. Why was that day chosen for the beginning of the study? If the GAO had gone back one more day, the number of Americans killed by Islamic jihadists would have been several thousand more than those killed by “far-right violent extremists.”

  26. KNIFE CONTROL: Hispanic Robber Kills 4 With Knife in California
    August 8, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

I have to assume it was an assault knife since he stabbed 6 people with it leaving 4 dead.

A man who was “full of anger” went on a two-hour stabbing and robbery rampage in Southern California, killing four people and wounding two others, authorities said Wednesday.

The violence appeared to be random and the only known motives seem to be “robbery, hate, homicide,” Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said at a news conference.

“We know this guy was full of anger and he harmed a lot of people tonight,” he said.

The suspect and all the victims were Hispanic, he added.

Which means that even though this meets the media’s standards for a mass killing, with 4 people dead, there will be a lot less interest in it.

If the killer turns out to be an illegal alien, interest will hit negative numbers.

  27. You Can’t Stop Mass Shootings
    August 7, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

“You can’t stop mass shootings by punishing people with mental illnesses,” reads a recent editorial.

More honestly, you can’t actually stop mass shootings.

Let’s be clear about what a mass shooting is. It’s a criminal conspiracy. If the shooter doesn’t tip his hand or do something stupid, there’s no real way to stop it.

The gun control argument bets everything on preventing the shooter from gaining access to firearms. But any dedicated killer (and somebody willing to die or spend the rest of his life in prison is generally dedicated) will get his hands on the weapons he needs.

That’s true in Europe where there’s plenty of gun control. And Islamic terrorists racked up a kill count higher than most mass shootings by getting behind the wheel of a truck. 9/11 was carried out with box cutters. A man who started fires on a train killed more people than most mass shooters.

Gun control is not going to stop a mass killer.

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you.

Republican lawmakers led by Sen. Lindsey Graham and his cohorts are discussing new “red flag” laws to take guns from “unstable” individuals.

Last November a 61-year-old Maryland man was shot dead while police were trying to serve him a “red flag” order.

The local officials said it was a sign the law is needed.

    There’s more…
The police arrived at his house at 5 AM.

  32. Italy’s Salvini says govt is finished, wants elections

ROME — Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said on Thursday there was no way to patch up differences in Italy’s ruling coalition and the only way forward was to hold new elections.

Salvini, leader of the right-wing League party, said in a statement that he had told Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte that the League’s alliance with the 5-Star Movement had collapsed and “we should quickly give the choice back to the voters.”

He said parliament could be convened next week to carry out the necessary procedural steps.

    • Bloomberg Pravda – Italy’s Trump Is All Bark and No Bite

Salvini has secured new powers targeting migrants but failed to deliver on his populist economic agenda.

Matteo Salvini comes across as a Trump-like agitator, but when it comes to politics he likes to play the long game.

Italy’s home affairs minister and deputy prime minister scored a significant political victory on Monday when parliament passed a security law which will make it harder to rescue immigrants at sea. His League is polling just below 40%, a remarkable success for a party which only gained 17% in last year’s general election. And yet, Salvini refuses to trigger an election, which could propel him to become prime minister and cement the role of the League as the dominant force in Italian politics.

His patience rests, above all, on the ineptitude of the Five Star Movement, which is nominally the League’s senior partner in Italy’s coalition government. Under the leadership of Luigi Di Maio, Italy’s other deputy prime minister, the anti-establishment movement has imploded at record speed. It is now polling around 15%, less than half of its result last year, and trails well behind the center-left Democratic Party. Five Star lawmakers appear increasingly reluctant to challenge the League’s agenda, as a new election could cost them their parliamentary seats. On Wednesday, they will vote for a parliamentary motion opposing a high-speed train link between the northern Italian city of Turin and Lyon in France – a project Five Star has long resisted – but the government intends to go ahead with it anyway. In a sense, they are the best coalition partner Salvini can hope for.

The opposition is also offering little resistance. Forza Italia, which was the League’s main ally in last year’s election but is now in the minority, is melting away as the leadership of an ageing Silvio Berlusconi fades. Salvini is gambling that he can continue to peel off voters from Forza Italia to the League so that he doesn’t have to rely on Berlusconi in the future. The Democratic Party is bitterly divided between its current leader, Nicola Zingaretti, and former prime minister Matteo Renzi. There is no prospect it will bounce back any time soon. A more effective opposition would find it easy to drive a wedge between the League and Five Star and undermine support for the government.

Most importantly, Salvini appears more interested in his popularity than in policy. He revels in tweeting on pretty much anything – from the beer he is drinking to celebrating the birthday of the Virgin Mary – and in DJ-ing shirtless in a beach club on Italy’s coast. But when one looks at how much of the League’s program he has actually implemented, voters have little to celebrate.

Take economic policy. The League has failed to deliver on its pledge to bring in a “flat tax” to lower Italy’s notoriously high rates. Instead, the tax burden has increased in the first three months of this year to 38% of gross domestic product from 37.7% in the same period of 2018, according to Italy’s statistics office. Salvini has also failed to deliver on a law which would give greater autonomy to Italy’s northern regions – the League’s electoral base – because of opposition from Five Star, which fears losing support in the South.

Finally, ahead of last year’s elections, Salvini pledged he would take Italy out of the euro. But not only is the country still a member of the monetary union, support for the euro is rising, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey. His anti-EU rhetoric so far hasn’t been matched by concrete action. On Tuesday, he insisted Italy could ignore European budget rules next year to deliver tax cuts and more investments. Yet his tough talk came just a month after the government softened its stance towards the bloc and agreed to cut the deficit by 7.6 billion euros ($8.5 billion) to meet the EU’s 2% deficit target this year. Salvini enjoys hitting the decks, but when it comes to tax-and-spending decisions, he is very much dancing to Brussels’ tune.

The League’s ineffectiveness may matter little to voters for now, but it risks undermining Salvini’s waiting game. The longer this government lasts, the higher the risk that voters look beyond the tweets and realize it hasn’t achieved very much at all. For now, it’s only the Italian economy that’s stagnating – but it doesn’t take much for political support to follow suit.

  33. Making it up: Dan Rather tells media to stop reporting what Trump says and report ‘what he really means’
GOPUSA StaffWashington Times Posted On 6:50 am August 8, 2019

Former “CBS Evening News” anchor Dan Rather on Monday advised fellow journalists to report on what President Trump “really believes” rather than what he says during prepared speeches and on Twitter.

“To my fellow members of the press, I suggest we refrain from quoting the president’s words from prepared speeches into headlines and tweets without context,” the veteran broadcaster tweeted to his 694,000 followers. “He sometimes says the right thing. The real questions are what he does and what he really believes.”

  34. Germany: Austrian co-producer of ‘Ibiza-gate’ video takes German newspaper to court

Representatives from the German newspaper ‘Die Zeit’ appeared in court in Berlin on Thursday to face a lawsuit brought by Julian H., a co-producer of the Ibiza video that was published on May 17 2019 and subsequently caused the collapse of Austria’s government.

Although Austrian detective Julian H. has sued several European news outlets for reporting personal details about him, this is his first suit against a German newspaper.

He came under public scrutiny after being connected to the video which was filmed on the Spanish island in summer 2017.

“In my opinion this is peculiar. If he would claim for himself that this has been produced for the rescue of democracy or for reasons of freedom of press, than it would play well for him,” said the attorney for the German newspaper ‘Die Zeit’ Joerg Nabert about the detective, who denies details that have been reported about him.

The one hour long session ended with Nabert saying that freedom of speech has received an “extreme restriction” today. Nabert continued to say that not all is lost and he does not “give up the fight yet.”

The incriminating video shows Heinz-Christian Strache, who was both Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) leader and Vice Chancellor at the time, and his fellow FPO member Johann Gudenus meeting with the supposed niece of a Russian oligarch and encouraging her to buy Austria’s largest newspaper, offering access to government projects in exchange for favourable election coverage and campaign funds.

Following the publication of the video Strache resigned from both his posts and Austria’s then chancellor Sebastian Kurz fired the FPO Interior Minister Herbert Kickl, after he refused to resign, resulting in the FPO exiting the governing coalition.

Kurz went on to lose a no-confidence vote called by the opposition and Austria’s president Alexander van der Bellen then replaced Kurz with the head of the country’s constitutional court Brigitte Bierlein, who is heading up an interim-government until elections scheduled to take place in September.

  36. Killing Free Speech in France, Germany and on the Internet

In May, France called for increasing government oversight over Facebook. Now Facebook has agreed to hand over to French judges the identification data of French users suspected of hate speech on its platform, according to France’s Secretary of State for the Digital Sector, Cédric O.

Previously, according to a Reuters report, “Facebook had refrained from handing over identification data of people suspected of hate speech because it was not compelled to do so under U.S.-French legal conventions and because it was worried countries without an independent judiciary could abuse it”. Until now, Reuters noted, Facebook had only cooperated with the French judiciary on matters related to terrorist attacks and violent acts by transferring the IP addresses and other identification data of suspected individuals to French judges who formally demanded it.

Now, however, “hate speech” — as speech that fails to comply with current political orthodoxy is conveniently labelled — appears to have become comparable to terrorism and violent crime. How autocratic, yet Cédric O apparently loves it: “This is huge news, it means that the judicial process will be able to run normally”.

It is highly probable that other countries will want to have a similar agreement with Facebook; it also appears likely that Facebook would comply. In May, for instance, as France was debating legislation that would give a new “independent regulator” the power to fine tech companies up to 4% of their global revenue if they do not do enough to remove “hateful content” from their network, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg commented: “I am hopeful that it [the French proposal] can become a model that can be used across the EU”.
