Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Revealed: Facebook Has a Process to Label You a “Hate Agent” for Behavior Online AND Offline — Just Like the Chinese Social Credit Scoring System

In 2018 Google helped the Chinese Communists develop a social credit scoring system. The scoring system, first announced in 2014, rates China’s one billion citizens based on their behavior and associations. Already, nine million people with low scores have been blocked from buying tickets for domestic flights and trains.
As horrible as this sounds the Silicon Valley tech giants are already using a similar system here in the United States.
And Facebook is using offline behavior to factor into their scoring system.

On Thursday Breitbart’s Allum Bokhari revealed that Facebook is using a similar social credit scoring system on Americans.

  2. (Richard: Last month there were reports of Iran loading missiles on “boats” this month we are wondering it the attacks on the tankers was Mines, Torpedoes, or missiles. Is there any connection?)

Iran responsible for ‘blatant assault’ on oil tankers in Gulf of Oman, Mike Pompeo says

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Iran for the “blatant assault” on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman earlier Thursday.

In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Pompeo said: “This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.”

He charged that Iran was working to disrupt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and this is a deliberate part of a campaign to escalate tension, adding that the U.S. would defend its forces and interests in the region, although he did not elaborate.

His comments came shortly after a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News the U.S. Navy saw an unexploded mine attached to the hull of the Panama-listed, Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous ship, one of the two ships attacked. It’s the same type of mine used to damage four oil tankers last month in the same area – an attack senior Pentagon officials blamed on Iran.

In a series of tweets, acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan praised Navy efforts to rescue those on the Panamanian vessel and called Iran’s “unprovoked attacks” a threat to international security and peace.

    • According to the article the ships are suppose to have sailed around the Gulf returned to port and were disarmed. During the early days of WWII there were some German raiders that were converted fast cargo ships, they sailed around using neutral flags and attacked the Briotish cargo ships. Eventually they were all caught and sunk, now has Iran taken a page from Hitlers play book and is using civilian ships as war ships?

      • Easy peasy. Somewhere out in the trackless void behind Kharg Island’s pumping platform is a yuge manifold where various oil field pipelines coalesce before on-loading to the waiting tankers.

Punch that pumping station’s ticket with the promise of carpet bombing the entire Kharg terminal if they so much as fart sideways.

With no further exports or outgoing oiler traffic to worry about, Iran won’t need to make more naval sorties. That said, sinking a few dozen corvettes or gunboats may be necessary to get the mule’s attention.

  3. Islamic State attacks Nigeria military base in Kareto, killing commander (thedefensepost, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/06/14/nigeria-islamic-state-attack-kareto-borno-iswap/

“Islamic State claimed fighters from its West Africa Province affiliate attacked a military base in the northern Borno state town of Kareto, while media reports said the battalion’s commanding officer was killed.

ISIS in a Thursday, June 13 statement said ISWAP fighters attacked the base in Kareto with light medium and heavy weapons. It claimed “at least 20” Nigerian soldiers were killed and others injured, that a “tank” and a Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon were destroyed, and the base was burned. Seven four-wheel drive vehicles, weapons and ammunition were captured, the statement said.

Kareto is around 135 km (84 miles) northwest of Borno state capital Maiduguri, not far from the Niger border…”

  4. France Urges Turkey to Halt ‘Illegal Activities’ in Cyprus (aawsat, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1767566/france-urges-turkey-halt-%E2%80%98illegal-activities%E2%80%99-cyprus

“France called on Turkey on Friday to stop “illegal activities” in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone.

President Emmanuel Macron added that the European Union would not back down on the issue.

“I want to reiterate my solidarity with Cyprus and my support and respect for its sovereignty. Turkey must stop its illegal activities in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone,” he said after a summit of Southern European Union heads of states in Malta.

EU members have pressured Turkey to drop its plans for offshore drilling for natural gas in an area claimed by the Cypriot authorities as part of their exclusive economic zone around the island.

“The European Union will not show weakness on this matter,” Macron stressed.

Turkey and Cyprus have been at odds since the 1974 ethnic conflict that split the island between its Greek and Turkish Cypriot populations.

A Turkish drill ship, the Fatih, has been anchored west of Cyprus since last month, and another drill vessel, the Yavuz, is scheduled to be deployed east of the island soon.

Both areas are claimed by the Greek Cypriot government as its exclusive economic zone, where it has commercial rights to explore for hydrocarbons. Turkey maintains an area west of Cyprus is its own continental shelf.”

  5. B REITBART – YouTube Censors Tim Pool Video on Project Veritas’ Pinterest Exposé

YouTube took down a video from independent journalist Tim Pool discussing Project Veritas’ recent interview with an insider at social media platform Pinterest, who exposed anti-Christian bias at the company.

Pool said that unlike other video takedowns, YouTube tried to remove his video quietly, without notifying him.

The journalist shared an image showing that there was no explanation for the video’s removal. Pool says this is unusual, even for the Google-owned YouTube.

“I have never seen this before,” said Pool. “Any removal usually has a line next to it explaining it. I never got an email or any kind of notice — this was quietly removed without telling me.”

This is the second time YouTube has censored the Pinterest story. It previously removed Project Veritas’ original video with the insider.

    From Breitbart News’ earlier story:

YouTube censored a video from undercover journalism outlet Project Veritas featuring an interview with a Silicon Valley insider who revealed anti-Christian censorship at the social media platform Pinterest.

YouTube users who navigate to the Project Veritas interview are now met with a message informing them that the video is “no longer available due to a privacy claim by a third party.”

The video can still be accessed at Project Veritas’ website. It reveals that Pinterest added Bible verses to a “sensitive terms” list and censored a major pro-life website as “pornography.”

    ….

In a statement to Breitbart News, a YouTube spokesman said “The privacy of our users is important to us, that’s why we created robust privacy guidelines. If someone feels their privacy has been violated on YouTube, they can file a privacy complaint and we will promptly remove the content if it violates our guidelines.”

Breitbart will continue to report on the Silicon Valley Masters of the Universe censorship Project Veritas’ reporting on Pinterest.

    • From the Project Veritas website:

Another document Project Veritas received was a screenshot from an internal Slack channel at Pinterest, where Public Policy and Social Impact Manager Ifeoma Ozoma instructed others to monitor the platform for “white supremacist” content from individuals like conservative commentators Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens.

Hokay … “white supremacist” and “Candace Owens”, all in the same sentence. How much toxic cognitive dissonance is required to string those words together with a serious face? Even worse, how do such morons expect others to read such manure without bursting into hysterical laughter … or simply breaking out the pitchforks and torches?

  7. UN: Over 24,000 refugees entered Europe in 2019 (memo, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190614-un-over-24000-refugees-entered-europe-in-2019/

“More than 24,000 irregular migrants and refugees reached Europe by sea since the beginning of 2019, the UN migration agency said Friday, Anadolu Agency has reported.

Of that figure, 555 died at sea, according to a report published by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

During the same period last year, nearly 37,000 refugees and migrants were able to travel to Europe, 875 of which drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to IOM Spain representative Ana Dodevska, 8,523 men, women and children arrived in the country since the beginning of 2019, down from 9,315 in the same period last year.

An average of 40 migrants per day entered Spain in the first two weeks of June 2019, much lower than the daily 230 in June 2018, IOM Spain reported.

Greece, on the other hand, received 11,683 in 2019, nearly equal to last year’s figure of 11,812 arrivals.

Thousands of people lost in the Central Mediterranean crossing have yet to be identified, the IOM said in a separate statement on Friday…”

  8. World Court rejects UAE demand for immediate measures against Qatar (memo, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190614-world-court-rejects-uae-demand-for-immediate-measures-against-qatar/

“The United Nations’ highest court for inter-state disputes on Friday rejected a United Arab Emirates request for immediate measures against Qatar in a dispute over alleged discrimination between the Arab neighbours, Reuters reports.

In a 15-1 vote, World Court judges rejected the UAE’s request for immediate action to stop Qatar blocking access to a UAE website that allows Qataris expelled from the UAE to obtain permits to return. By not allowing access to the site, Dubai argued, Doha was aggravating the dispute.

The argument dates from 2017 when the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a boycott on Qatar, severing diplomatic and transport ties and accusing it of supporting terrorism. Doha denies these claims.

According to Qatar, which filed a case with the International Court of Justice in June last year, the UAE has as part of the boycott expelled thousands of Qataris, blocked transport and closed down the offices of the Doha-based Al-Jazeera news channel.

But the court on Friday found that the rights claimed do not fall under a U.N. anti-discrimination treaty and do not need to be dealt with by an urgent, summary ruling. They will be ruled on when the case is heard in full, probably next year.

Last July, the court granted provisional measures against Dubai which Qatar requested, arguing that thousands of Qataris had been expelled as part of the boycott which they say breached a U.N. anti-discrimination treaty.

It also ordered the UAE and Qatar “to refrain from any action that might aggravate or extend the dispute before the court”. In Friday’s ruling presiding Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf stressed that those measures remain binding for both parties.

The ICJ is the United Nations venue for legal disputes between states. Its verdicts are binding, but it has no enforcement powers. Final verdicts generally take years and no date was set for the case to be heard in full.”

  9. The Iraq Report: Iraq wants France to pay millions for ‘justice’, as US-Iran tensions hit (alaraby, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/indepth/2019/6/14/iraq-report-iraq-wants-france-to-pay-for-justice

“Despite grave concerns about Iraq’s human rights record and the dispensation of justice in its courts, officials in Baghdad have allegedly requested hundreds of millions of dollars from the French government in order to put its nationals who are suspected jihadis on trial. This has raised concerns from human rights organisations and activists who accuse France of abandoning its duty to ensure its citizens are allowed their right to a fair trial…”

    • …officials in Baghdad have allegedly requested hundreds of millions of dollars from the French government in order to put its nationals who are suspected jihadis on trial.

One can only speculate as to how many tens of millions will end up in the pouch of this kangaroo court. After any trials, the West would be fortunate if there was enough money left over to actually incarcerate the bastards for a week.

Then there’s the trouble of fitting all those terrorist jail cells with revolving doors. Do you have any idea of how expensive that is?!?

  10. Saudi sisters Dua and Dalal escape to Turkey, fleeing ‘forced marriage, abuse’ at home (alaraby, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2019/6/14/saudi-sisters-escape-to-turkey-fleeing-abuse-at-home

“Two Saudi sisters are pleading for help from Turkey after fleeing alleged abuse from their relatives who they say tried to force them to marry “older religious” men and sexually assaulted one of them.

The runaways’ case is the latest in a growing list of high-profile escapes involving Saudi women fleeing extreme restrictions in the ultra-conservative kingdom.

Sisters Dua and Dalal said they fled to Turkey to put an end to the life-long domestic abuse they have endured. They posted a video on a Twitter account, which has since then been suspended, describing their situation and asking for help.

“I’m Dua and my sister Dalal have fled from Saudi Arabia to Turkey. My father wanted marry us to old men and religious militants. We were beaten and harassed. We were threatened with imprisonment in the Women’s Welfare Center”, the sisters tweeted on their original account @RunFarAway2.

The account was initially made in December 2017 but was suspended after the sisters used it to advocate their cause, something which human rights activists fear is a result of Saudi lobbying.

“It is possible that the suspensions were due to Dua and Dalal’s family lodging malicious complaints against the Twitter accounts,” said Radha Stirling – founder and CEO of human rights organisation Detained in Dubai, in a press release.

“I certainly hope that Twitter is not censoring the sisters’ story under pressure from Saudi shareholders”, she added.

Radha is providing testimony on the behalf of the sisters and her organisation is managing their Twitter account.

Since Twitter suspended their original account, a video that was originally posted on there has gone viral after being recirculated.

“My father took our passport and our national identity. He is looking for us now. We are at risk. I appeal to all human rights organisations and to all human rights activists to help us move to a safe country”, Dua said in a video, with Dalal silently sitting next to her.

Dalal later shared that she was subjected to sexual abuse by her older brother and was raped by a member of the notorious “religious virtue police” near King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.

Images circulated of the two women’s passports, establishing their identity, although The New Arab could not independently verify their claims…”

  11. Arrest looms for Pakistan ex-PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi (gulfnews, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/pakistan/arrest-looms-for-pakistan-ex-pm-shahid-khaqan-abbasi-1.64603592

“After the recent arrests of former president Asif Ali Zardari and opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz, Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has reportedly set its sights on former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

According to a senior official of the anti-graft agency, the NAB has decided to formally convert its inquiry into an investigation against the former prime minister, in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) scandal, and he may be taken into custody anytime with the approval of the bureau’s chairman.

The case dates back to 2013 and allegedly caused the national exchequer a loss of $2 billion (Dh7.34 billion)…”

  12. Ship insurance costs soar after Middle East tanker attacks (dawn, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.dawn.com/news/1488204/ship-insurance-costs-soar-after-middle-east-tanker-attacks

“Insurance costs for ships sailing through the Middle East have increased by at least 10% after attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, with the potential for costs to rise further as regional tensions escalate, ship insurers said.

The attacks have already stoked concerns about reduced flows of crude oil on one of the world’s key shipping routes, pushing up oil prices by as much as 4.5%.

Some tanker companies have already suspended new bookings to the Middle East Gulf.

Freight rates for supertankers transporting oil from the Middle East Gulf to Asia were already close to a two-month high on Thursday at nearly $13,000 a day, up nearly $2,000 from Wednesday.

Every ship needs various forms of insurance, including annual war-risk cover as well as an additional ‘breach’ premium when entering high-risk areas. These separate premiums are calculated according to the value of the ship, or hull, for a seven-day period.

Ship insurers say the biggest vessels sailing through the Gulf area face additional costs of up to $200,000 for a single seven-day voyage, roughly twice as expensive as earlier this week…”

  13. Turkey neutralizes 48 PKK terrorists in N Iraq operation (hdn, Jun 14, 2019)
    http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-neutralizes-48-pkk-terrorists-in-n-iraq-operation-144168

“A total of 48 terrorists have been neutralized since May 27 in Turkey’s counter-terrorism operation in northern Iraq, an official statement said on June 14.

The ongoing Operation Claw which was launched by Turkish Armed Forces against the PKK terrorist group neutralized three more terrorists in the Hakurk region on June 14, bringing the total number to 48, the National Defense Ministry said on Twitter.

Authorities often use the word “neutralized” in statements to imply terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU — has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including many women and children.”

  14. 51 FETO terrorists sentenced to 9-year jail term (aa, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/51-feto-terrorists-sentenced-to-9-year-jail-term/1504386

“Turkish prosecutors on Friday awarded prison sentences of nine years and seven months to 51 Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) affiliated defendants, for leaking 2012 police academy examination questions to their collaborators.

The trials were held in Ankara’s Heavy Criminal Court no:19. The defendants were charged of being members of an armed terror group and also cheating the state institutions.

Ali Osman Arslan, Fatih Guler, Ugur Bayram and Umit Cinkir were found guilty of delivering questions to FETO-linked candidates, who were sitting in examination to qualify entry into the Turkish state institutions. The court sentenced them severe prison sentence of nine years and seven months and also slapped fine of 14,000 Turkish Liras (($2,375).

A number of defendants benefitted after cooperating with Turkish security and judiciary departments. They will be free after competing period of probation.

A total of 18 defendants were acquitted of all charges.

On July 15, 2016, FETO terror group and its U.S.-based ringleader Fetullah Gulen organized the defeated coup, which claimed 251 lives and left more than 2000 people wounded.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state, through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.

Leaking exam questions was a common method used by the terror group, to ensure its infiltration into state institutions across the country.”

  15. Two gang members held over Milan park homicide (ansa, Jun 14, 2019)

“Two Salvadorians were detained on Friday for the homicide of a 32-year-old Peruvian man in Milan’s Lambro park, sources said.

The victim, Edgar Luis Calderon Gonzales, is thought to have drowned after being beaten, robbed and pushed into a river unconscious.

The suspects are aged 26 and 28 and are both said to be members of the Barrio 18 Hispanic gang.

They have criminal records for attempted homicide, the sources said.”

  16. Southern EU leaders criticize migrant rescue ships (DW, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.dw.com/en/southern-eu-leaders-criticize-migrant-rescue-ships/a-49214522

“Leaders southern EU states tried to develop a common political and economic stance ahead of an EU summit. Migration was one issue topping the agenda with a call for rescue ships to give way to the Libyan coast guard.

Southern European leaders called Friday for NGO migrant rescue ships in the Mediterranean Sea to follow international law and not to obstruct the Libyan coast guard.

The leaders of Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain also said in a joint declaration at a summit in Valletta that “efforts to break the smugglers’ business model need to be further enhanced, with the aim to also prevent tragic loss of life.”

Italy and Malta have taken a strict line against humanitarian vessels rescuing migrants, arguing that they help human traffickers and entice migrants to make the dangerous sea journey from North Africa to Europe. NGOs maintain that their rescue vessels do not lead more people to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean.

The summit statement calling on all vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea to respect “applicable international laws and not obstruct operations of the Libyan coast guard” came as the German-operated Sea Watch 3 NGO rescue vessel was off Italy’s southern Lampedusa island with 53 migrants on board.

The ship has been denied entry to Italian ports after it rescued the migrants off the coast of Libya. Earlier on Friday, Sea Watch called on supporters to sign a petition calling on German cities to accept the migrants.

The latest migrant rescue vessel standoff came after Italy’s government earlier this week issued a decree denying rescue ships access to Italian territorial waters and threatening fines and confiscation of boats if they fail to follow orders.

Leaders from seven EU states also called for greater political and economic support for Libya and the UN to handle migrants as well as an immediate cease-fire in the country wracked by civil war.

Led by Italy, the EU has supported the Libyan coast guard in preventing migrants from setting out across the Mediterranean. The policy is controversial due to the horrible condition of camps and widespread human rights abuses in Libya.

The gathering of southern European states in Malta sought to create a united economic and political front before next week’s European Council meeting.

Climate change, migration and social policy were among the issues addressed at the summit, as well as political bargaining over top jobs in the EU including the head of the European Commission and the European Central Bank.”

  17. US quarantines 5,200 migrants over mumps and chicken pox exposure (france24, Jun 14, 2019)
    https://www.france24.com/en/20190614-us-quarantines-5200-migrants-over-mumps-chicken-pox-exposure

“US authorities said Friday they had placed 5,200 detained migrants into quarantine, mainly over exposure to mumps, linking a surge in cases to a recent outbreak of the contagious disease in Central America.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official told AFP that as of June 13 almost 4,300 detainees were being confined across 39 facilities for exposure to mumps, more than 800 for exposure to chicken pox, and about a hundred for both.

The first confirmed case of mumps among ICE detainees was reported on September 7, 2018 and since then the figure has grown to 334, the official added.

Nathalie Asher, ICE’s executive associate director of enforcement and removal operations, said that 75 percent of the current detention population came directly from the border, while the others were detained within the US.

Given this, and recent outbreaks of mumps in Central America, “the preponderance of evidence points to the major influx at our Southwest border being, at minimum, a significant contributing factor of these occurrences,” she said.

“The impact is significant in the short and long term,” she said, including longer detentions and delayed removals.

The number in quarantine represent about a tenth of the approximately 52,000 ICE detainees overall.

The agency was giving exposed asymptomatic detainees measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines and quarantining them for 25 days from the last incubation period, it said.

Mumps is a contagious disease with symptoms such as puffy cheeks and a tender, swollen jaw as well as fever, muscle aches and loss of appetite.

Most people make a full recovery within two weeks but in rare cases there can be severe complications.

The US has been experiencing its own sporadic mumps outbreaks in the past several years, which scientists believe might be linked to the vaccine’s waning immunity over time and the need for a booster shot at the age of 18.

Cases fell dramatically after the two-MMR dose program was introduced in 1989, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with only a few hundred reported annually for several years thereafter.

But they have been on the rise again since 2006, with more than 6,000 cases in 2006, 2016 and 2017.

There have been 1,002 cases reported this year from January 1 to May 24.”
