Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Met a lovely man in the waiting room of a bus garage dressed as a Viking (to start the convesation I asked if it was Celtic) who had just come from a Dungeons and Dragons D&G convention.

He told me he worshipped Thor as his God (there are other gods like Odin but he said Thor chose him and helped him survive a life threatening event).

It happened when driving from a similar event when he suddenly became very cold. It was a warm evening. He stopped, retrieved his Viking armor from the boot. Drove on again, fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree. The armor protected him from the worst injuries. His guardian angel Thor had done this. Another time he said while driving in light rain he saw a lightening bolt in the distance and he slowed down so when he hit a patch of hailstones, he skidded off the road but was not hurt.

Asatru is the name of his faith. https://www.asatru.org/

I said the subconscious is working to make sense of our reality. An awesome reach into the unknown. I felt from our conversation that he had embraced ‘love the lord your god, with all your strength with heart mind and soul and love your neighbor as your self.’ Only that his god had a name, while my attitude was of was my god was infinite and nameless, (as were my neighbors infinite and nameless without knowing upon what other planets they were on), so that we had a connection in the same middle that was grounded in our truth and love. Respect for the beliefs and opinions of the other. Neither of us felt disgusted as seeing the other as kufar.

Now, maybe because his religion had less than 1% belongers, I could rest easy because it had the effect of being an individual-faith with reliance on one’s own character and not copying one’s betters to receive mercy and grace. In other words, not being in the dangerous cult of look alikes and sound alikes.

At 20% 40% 60% his might easily turn into Catholicism or Islam, virtue-signaling or terror. Where from within always rises pedophiles and pederasts, manipulating and mostly unseen; respectively. Because blind-feelings are always misdirected to Angels and Jinns.

In a city I had newly visited. All restaurants halal. How long would he Iast, I pondered? Would he survive long enough to muster their warrior-code, like Sikhism, to defend his family and friends with a sword? Or would he submit like so many lost civilizations. 3. More on the Eurovision Song festival – seems it has become a culture war battleground.
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/11/italian-egyptian-mahmood-singers-victory-angers-matteo-salvini

An Italian-Egyptian singer has become the latest target of Italy’s rightwing populist government after he won the Sanremo song festival, an annual competition that draws millions of TV viewers and is used to choose the Italian candidate for the Eurovision song contest.
    [..]
Salvini’s fellow deputy prime minister, Luigi Di Maio, from the League’s Five Star Movement coalition partners, denounced the “abysmal distance between the people and the ‘elites’”. Mahmood’s victory represented the wishes of a minority jury mostly consisting “of journalists and the radical chic” rather than the “majority of voters at home”, Di Maio wrote on Facebook.
    [..]
In January, singer-songwriter Claudio Baglioni’s role as host came under threat after he described Salvini’s rejection of 49 rescued migrants as “farcical”.
    [..]
Mahmood was born in Milan to an Italian mother and Egyptian father. His winning song, Soldi (Money), recounts his childhood and includes Arabic words. He told reporters he is “100% Italian” and intended for the song to tell a story rather than make a political point.

Capitoni said it was plausible that some of the journalists on the voting panel may have been sending a political message by backing the singer.

  4. Arson attack on the historic parish church St. Blasii in Nordhausen, Germany+++
Between Friday and Saturday a tablecloth was lit in the entrance hall of the church in the parish church St. Blasii in Nordhausen (photo above). Fortunately the blanket did not ignite completely. The police were called and it became known that the barrier line to the gallery was also burned. Obviously there had been a fire in several places in the church. To be on the safe side, the Nordhausen professional fire brigade was alerted and used a thermal imaging camera to examine unclear areas for hidden fire spots. The all-clear could be given. The Nordhausen police are investigating the case. The church is open to all during the week. Witnesses who have made suspicious perceptions are asked to report to a police station.

  5. US Publisher Drops Book About Iran-Led Invasion of Israel Amid Islamophobia Row (sptuniknews, May 19, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201905191075132823-book-iran-invasion-israel/

The author of the book denies accusations of perpetuating anti-Islamic views and says that “being afraid of militant Islam is hardly a neurosis”.

Dzanc Books, a Michigan-based independent press book publisher, has withdrawn a novel about an Iranian attack on Israel from sale.

The book, titled The Siege of Tel Aviv, tells the story of an Iran-led invasion of five Muslim armies into Israel, destroying the Jewish state and turning Tel Aviv, which remains under Israeli control, into a ghetto with failing water and food supplies.

The Siege of Tel Aviv received blurbs from several authors, with master of horror Stephen King calling it “scarier than anything Stephen King ever wrote”.

The release of the novel by prize-winning author Hesh Kestin, a former Forbes journalist and IDF veteran, was announced on 16 April.

However, days later, the publisher said it was nixing the book in the wake of backlash on social media and complaints from authors affiliated with Dzanc, who labelled the book Islamophobic.

A host of social media users and authors erupted in anger after Dzanc Books and Kestin promoted the release on Twitter.

“This is obviously racist,” tweeted Nathan Goldman of the secular left Jewish Currents magazine.

Author Cornet Lamar Charleston referred to the book as being “blatantly Islamophobic [and] racist”, while other commenters took aim at the word “Moslem” from the book description, which referred to the Muslim armies.

The novel “perpetuates harmful narratives regarding Muslims that we cannot support, as a house,” Dzanc Books’ publisher and editor in chief, Michelle Dotter, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA).

Co-founder Steve Gillis denied allegations that the book promulgated Islamophobia, saying that it represented a mixture of absurdism with satire and social commentary.

“It is not in any way meant to be read literally as an Islamophobic text. That the material presents itself as problematic in this regard troubles me deeply,” he said in a statement on Dzanc’s website.

“I hoped readers would understand the intent of the novel, the over-the-top absurdist narrative, drawing attention to ? not championing ? the ridiculous ways in which we, as a universal community, see one another and fail in our interactions. That the novel has been viewed as otherwise is our failing.”

75-year-old Kestin denied allegations of perpetuating Islamophobia and stated that his book is based on the signs of “growing anti-Semitism” and the Islamic world’s “hostility to the very existence of the Jewish state”.

“That a publishing house pledged to independence has allowed itself to be bullied by a mob that could fit into my kitchen says entirely too much of the state of publishing in America and not enough about backbone,” he said in a press release.

Kestin has received a $2,500 advance from Dzanc, which he will keep, according to the JTA, and is currently in talks with the publisher to buy remaining copies of the book. He announced that the first half of the book is available free on his website, while the full copy can be bought on Amazon.”

  6. Sweden: Security Service Arrest Several Islamists Including Leader of Muslim School (breitbart, May 19, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/05/19/sweden-security-service-arrest-several-islamists-including-leader-of-muslim-school/

“Swedish security service Säpo say they have arrested five radical Islamists in a short period of time, with one of those arrested being one of the main leaders of an Islamic school in western Sweden.

The principal of the school said that the arrest of the man, whose identity was not published in a report by Swedish broadcaster SVT, would not affect the functioning of the school itself, refusing to comment further on the matter.

Lawyer Lars-Erik Olsson, who previously represented the arrested man, said, “We have not had any contact now, and I also do not know if he will have the opportunity to contact me,” adding, “It does not take much for you to be designated when you are a Muslim.”

Gabriel Wernstedt, press secretary at Säpo, was also tight-lipped on the case, saying, “We never comment on individuals when it comes to our intelligence work.”

Wernstedt did not comment on the fact that several radical imams in Sweden have also been detained.

One of the Imams detained is Riyad Al-Duhan, also known as Abo Raad, who was arrested last month and served as imam for a mosque in the city of Gävle. The imam is known as a proponent of the strict Salafist school of Islamic thought and has been in Sweden for 20 years, but has been rejected for citizenship twice.

The spread of Islamic radicalism has been a major issue in Sweden for several years, with reports showing huge growth in the number of radicals. Swedish researcher Peder Hyllengren of the Swedish Defence College claimed the country had become a base for international jihadists.

Another report from Sweden’s National Centre for Terror Threat Assessment (NCT) released in March 2019 acknowledged that Islamic terrorism was still the number one security threat to Sweden despite victories against the Islamic State terror group in the Middle East.”

  7. Doctor Could Be Fired for Asking Muslim Woman to Remove Veil (breitbart, May 19, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/05/19/gp-faces-sack-after-asking-muslim-woman-to-remove-veil/

“The 23-year career of a family doctor hangs in the balance after he reportedly asked a Muslim woman to remove a veil covering her mouth, so that he could better understand what she was saying about the condition of her ill child.

The GP, Dr Keith Wolverson, explained that he could not hear the woman properly through her niqab, a veil covering the face from the eyes down, and asked her politely to remove it while she was describing her daughter’s illness.

“I found it difficult to understand what the woman was saying behind her veil, so politely asked her to remove it [as] I needed to hear what was wrong with her daughter so I could offer the safest possible care,” he explained.

Dr Wolverson said that she had obliged and that there had not been an issue when he initially asked, but half an hour later the woman’s husband arrived at the surgery and lodged a complaint against the doctor with his supervisors.

The husband claimed that his wife had been left in tears by the incident and felt that she had been “victimized and racially discriminated against”.

He alleges that Doctor Wolverson gave her a “dirty look” when asking her to remove the veil and had refused to continue the appointment unless she complied, and the woman claims she told the doctor she was uncomfortable doing so due to her religious beliefs.

The complaint has now been formally taken up with the General Medical Council (GMC) and may even result in the doctors’ dismissal. Dr Wolverson said that the process could “ruin me”.

Dr Wolverson went on to call the claims of racism “outrageous” and said, “I’m not racist. This is nothing to do with race, religion or skin colour – it’s about clarity of communication.”

Wolverson said that he had never encountered an issue in the past when asking patients to remove face coverings and said that “many do it as a courtesy”.

Mohammed Shafiq, of the Ramadhan Foundation, has urged the GMC to send Dr Wolverson on a diversity awareness course but stated it would be a “shame” if any stronger action was taken.

Joyce Robins, from the campaign group ‘Patient Concern’, said that losing a doctor over the issue would be “criminal.””

    • I”ve never had an issue with Saudi guardians when asking the women to remove the face covering in order to provide better communication. Had the physician been a woman, there would not be a story. Such as this has happened in the U$ without issue.

President Trump has indicated that he is considering pardons for several American military members accused or convicted of war crimes, including high-profile cases of murder, attempted murder and desecration of a corpse, according to two United States officials.

The officials said that the Trump administration had made expedited requests this week for paperwork needed to pardon the troops on or around Memorial Day.

One request is for Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of the Navy SEALs, who is scheduled to stand trial in the coming weeks on charges of shooting unarmed civilians and killing an enemy captive with a knife while deployed in Iraq.

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/malta-soldiers-charged-race-crimes-migrant-death-63133918

“Two Maltese soldiers have pleaded not guilty to charges they participated in a racially-motivated, fatal drive-by shooting of a migrant from Ivory Coast.

The two men, Lorin Scicluna and Francesco Fenech, were also charged Sunday with the April 6 attempted murder of two other men from Guinea and Gambia, who were seriously injured in the attack. The death of Ivorian Lassana Cisse is believed to be Malta’s first racially motivated slaying amid Europe’s current debate over migration.

The charges, which include racial hatred and committing a racially motivated crime, carry a maximum of life in prison.

Migration is a key political issue for the Mediterranean island nation, particularly ahead of European Parliament elections this week. Maltese political leaders and Catholic Church officials have been speaking out against growing hate speech against migrants, particularly on social media.”

  10. Libyan fighters in Tripoli get armored vehicles from abroad (abcnews, May 19, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/libyan-fighters-tripoli-armored-vehicles-abroad-63134262

“Fighters allied with the U.N.-recognized government in Libya’s capital say they have received armored vehicles and “quality weapons” despite a U.N. arms embargo on the country.

A Facebook page linked to the Tripoli government posted photos appearing to show more than a dozen armored vehicles arriving at port, without saying who supplied them. Supporters of the various militias allied with the government say the vehicles, which resemble Turkish-made Kirpi armored vehicles, were supplied by Turkey.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last month his government would stand by Tripoli authorities as they repel an offensive launched by Khalifa Hifter’s self-styled Libyan National Army.

Hifter, whose forces control eastern Libya, has received support from the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.”

    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1729886/houthis-attract-recruits-through-sports-ramadan-events

“Houthi militias have intensified their campaigns among the Yemeni community at various levels, hoping to change its culture, impose their sectarian ideology, and attract more people to send them to fight.

In this context, the pro-Iranian militias have held various sports activities in Ramadan and organized events that take place every night after the iftar meal with the aim of serving their sectarian goals and attracting young people to recruit them later.

“The militias are holding events and activities to attract young and old people through meetings, tournaments, and sports leagues held in all neighborhoods and residential areas during Ramadan,” athletes and activists told Asharq Al-Awsat.

“There are various activities organized by the militias during the holy month of Ramadan, such as football, volleyball, chess, billiards, and snooker,” they said.

“The league and tournaments organized by the militias include different age groups, and most of the tournaments are held by clubs or sports bodies,” a source from Sanaa told Asharq Al-Awsat.

He explained that the militias’ so-called supervisory offices or educational departments observe these games.

Abu Hamza al-Nahari, one of the parents in Hadda district, southwest Sanaa, pointed out that Houthis are naming Ramadan sports leagues after their followers who were killed.

“The group tries to establish specific names and terms in citizens minds, especially the youth,” he told Asharq Al-Awsat, adding that teams participating in some of these championships are called names such as resistance, steadfastness, challenge, stability, dignity, etc.

Ismail al-Rimi said most of the tournaments witnessed the participation of teams bearing the names of dead and Houthi leaders, some of whom were athletes but were killed during clashes.

According to former sports officials in Sanaa, the militias hold seminars and cultural lectures in most clubs, neighborhoods, and wedding halls in areas that fall under their control.”

  12. Iraq accuses ISIS of setting fire to hundreds of acres of farmlands (thenational, May 19, 2019)
    https://www.thenational.ae/world/mena/iraq-accuses-isis-of-setting-fire-to-hundreds-of-acres-of-farmlands-1.863482

“Iraq’s Ministry of Commerce accused ISIS on Sunday of destroying hundreds of agricultural fields across the country, raising fears that the extremist group is stepping up activity.

The group allegedly set fire to 500 acres of wheat and barley farms in the eastern province of Diyala on Saturday and destroyed further further fields in the northern province of Nineveh.

Local media reported that the burning of fields was part of an extortion racket in which ISIS members demanded money from farmers.

“We call for the urgent protection and security of civilians and their land,” the trade and interior ministries said in a statement.

The ministries called on security forces in Nineveh to intervene to prevent such attacks from occurring in the near future.

Since its rise in 2014, ISIS has sabotaged hundreds of wells, destroyed orchards, and stolen machinery and livestock, Human Rights Watch reported last December.

An Iraqi member of parliament Raad Dahlaki urged the government to compensate farmers for their loss.

Earlier this month, ISIS fighters carried out several attacks in western Mosul, according to security officials. The insurgents burned down several houses in the village of Ibrahimia, west of Mosul, that caused dozens of families to flee.

An unidentified group of armed men shot dead five members of an Iraqi family in an attack on their house in southern Mosul on 5 May.

Security officials said that ISIS fighters were involved in the attack on a house of a village community supervisor in the Hammam Al Alil area, according to a statement by the interior ministry.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, ISIS fighters are active in that area.

In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a grain silo in the northern Iraqi town of Shirqat last Thursday, killing a guard and setting fire to a vehicle.

It comes as Iraqi forces launched a new security operation on Saturday to hunt down remaining ISIS sleeper cells near the Syrian border.

Iraqi forces recently cleared 10 villages in the district of Al Baaj, west of Mosul, Major General Najem Al Jubouri said.

The official said that military operations will continue until areas in the Nineveh province and the Syrian border are secure.

At its height in 2014 and 2015, ISIS ruled over a self-proclaimed “caliphate” that spanned one third of Iraq and Syria and attracted followers from all over the world.

Although Iraq declared victory over the terrorists in December 2017, the group continues to carry out attacks across the country.

An unknown number of ISIS supporters remain at large in both Syria and Iraq.”

  14. Islam-Themed Beer Coasters Spark Outrage in Germany (sputniknews, May 19, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201905191075136621-germany-coasters-islam-questions/

“The project, which was approved by Germany’s Central Council of Muslims three years ago, provisions the country’s pubs and restaurants with specially-created cardboard coasters which ask questions about Islam.

The Foreigners’ Advisory Council in the German town of Maintal has lashed out at a project which envisages printing information about Islam on beer coasters.

Although Maintal is a town where the cardboard coasters printed with Islam–related questions have just been introduced, the project has already been running for three years in Germany; the goal is to promote better understanding of Islam in the country.

“They could have used postcards, or adverts on the side of a bus. Why did it have to be the pub?” Council head Salih Tasdirek told Der Spiegel magazine.

According to him, it is an inappropriate way to educate people about a religion which forbids alcohol, among other things.

Additionally, Tasdirek said that he is downbeat about the beer coasters including a symbol of a cider jug, given that it remains a historic emblem for the region.

In contrast, Raban Kluger of the German NGO Orient Network defended the project, which he said helps “give answers in the local language to the questions that our members, mostly Islamic scholars, are always asked”.

“It is not our intention to associate alcohol with Islam,” he underscored.

Kluger added that questions and answers were compiled by Muslims and checked by Germany’s Central Council of Muslims, and that there were no problems when tens of thousands of such coasters were distributed across Germany.

There is a web link and QR code to the answer on the flip side of each specially-created cardboard coaster, which can be found in German pubs and restaurants.

As a result of the migration crisis that started in Europe in 2015, more than 4.5 million Muslims live in Germany nowadays, or 5.5 percent of the total population of the country.”

Petition To REMOVE RASHIDA Tlaib For Fake Address Lie Surpasses 300,000 Signatures

Democrat Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is facing nationwide calls for her resignation or removal from office after Big League Politics exposed that Tlaib lied about her address in order to illegally register to vote, run for office, and represent a state House district that she did not live in — violating federal and state laws in the process. Rashida Tlaib illegally pretended to represent a state House district in Detroit even though she lived the whole time in suburban Dearborn, which should have led to her removal from office in the state legislature. The Michigan Bureau of Elections is aware of the growing scandal, and current state senator Jon Bumstead of Michigan put word to BLP through an intermediary that Rashida Tlaib did in fact violate the law.

The petition “IMPEACH RASHIDA TLAIB” for her fake residency scandal, which was created by MRS. AMERICAN CITIZEN, has reached 318,536 signatures on Change.org as of press time.

A former U.S. congressman from the state of Michigan said that Rashida Tlaib should undergo a lie detector test after we revealed that she illegally lied about her address to run for office, that she represented a state House district she did not live in, and that she lied about her address on her voter registration form. Other gatherings under the slogan “No to Hate, Yes to Change” were planned in Budapest, Genoa, Utrecht, Warsaw, Bucharest and other cities.

The dpa news agency said organizers reported 20,000 protesters in Berlin, while police estimated 10,000 in Munich, 14,000 in Frankfurt, and 10,000 in Hamburg.

The 751-seat European Parliament has limited powers but the poll is being seen as a test of strength both by right-wing, populist and nationalist groups who want curbs on immigration and more authority for national governments on the one hand, and on the other by center-left and center-left mainstream parties who support the EU as a bulwark of cooperation among its 28 member states, rule of law and democracy.”

  20. Burkina Faso: The New Land of Islamic Jihad and Christian Slaughter

ast Sunday, May 12, in the small West African nation of Burkina Faso, as many as 30 armed Islamic terrorists stormed a Catholic church, slaughtered at least six Christian worshippers — including the officiating priest — then burned the church to the ground.

Ousmane Zongo, the mayor of Dablo, where the attack occurred, recalled the incident:

“Towards 9:00am, during mass, armed individuals burst into the Catholic Church… They started firing as the congregation tried to flee…. They burned down the church, then shops and a small restaurant before going to the health centre where they searched the premises and set fire to the head nurse’s vehicle…. The city is filled with panic. People are holed up at home. Shops and stores are closed. It’s practically a ghost town.”

Discussing the situation in the country — which is 60% Muslim, 23% Christian, and 17% animist or other — the BBC reports that “Jihadist violence has flared in Burkina Faso since 2016…. Fighters affiliated to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group as well as the local Ansarul Islam [Champions of Islam] have been active in the region.”

  21. Tehran Apologists Should Change Their Tune

    by Amir Taheri
    May 19, 2019 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/14245/iran-apologists-fujairah

One of the problems with a dispassionate discussion of matters related to Iran today is that the issue has become too ideological to allow rational, not to say clinical, examination. Taking part in a televised panel the other evening to discuss the “sabotage” of four ships in the UAE port of Fujairah, I noted that there was as yet no evidence to show who had been behind the operation. At the same time, I noted that a leading daily in Tehran had urged the launching of precisely such operations just a day before the Fujairah attack.

Needless to say, I was attacked on all sides. Some claimed that by suggesting there was no evidence regarding the authorship of the attack, I was trying to whitewash the mullahs. Others claimed that by reminding people that such an operation had been urged in the daily Kayhan, representing the views of “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenei, meant that I wished to incriminate Tehran to please “American warmongers.”

In a series of subsequent media programs, a range of personalities, including two former British ambassadors to Tehran, appeared as apologists for the mullahs while two former British defense and foreign secretaries spoke as if they had solid evidence that Tehran was involved.

On the one had we have those who, not always without reason, are suspicious of anything remotely connected with Islam, even if that connection is spurious. On the other, there are those who see the Khomeinists on the side of angels simply because they are, or pretend to be, anti-American, even if their anti-Americanism is little more than a pose.

  22. Pakistan on a Tightrope
    By Dr. James M. Dorsey
    May 19, 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Pakistan risks falling off a tightrope as it attempts to balance its relations with rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Recent developments – including the Baloch nationalist attack on a luxury hotel in the strategic port city of Gwadar and a legal dispute over completion of a gas pipeline that took place against the backdrop of Saudi-Iranian-Qatari competition for the Pakistani gas market – suggest that Pakistan is in an increasingly tenuous position.

The South Asian nation’s seemingly unsustainable tightrope walk is likely to have consequences for the security of China’s massive US$45 billion investment in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a crown jewel of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. It could also affect the roughly US$10 billion the Saudis are planning to invest in a refinery and copper mine in the troubled Pakistani province of Balochistan. Pakistani hopes are dwindling that it will be able to contain political violence – a necessity if it is to attract more badly needed foreign investment and avoid sanctions for inadequate counterterrorism measures.

The assault on the highly secured Zaver Pearl Continental Hotel Gwadar (a part of Pakistan’s largest luxury hotel chain), in which at least five people were killed, was the second incident since Pakistani PM Imran Khan and Iranian president Hassan Rouhani agreed last month to step up security cooperation along their 959-kilometer-long border.

    • Interesting, Iran is facing internal problems that are tearing the country apart and from the few reports I have access to attendance at the Mosques has dropped to historic lows. A few years ago there were reports that there was a massive number of people converting from Islam to Christianity. It follows that they were also converting to other religions native to that area. Now we have one province in Pakistan seeking to pull our and form its own nation. I wonder if there is a drop in the number of people going to the Mosques? There is also the tribal problem Pakistan with the tribal loyalty stronger then the loyalty to the nations.

Has China invested a large amount of money (money that they don’t have) in taking over a port and helping build a railroad in a nation that is about to be wracked with internal warfare?

The idea of the US pulling out of Afghanistan and letting China move in is looking more attractive, China would be more violent but the Afghan’s and Paki’s have never responded well to attempts to intimidate them.

      • China would be more violent…

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Look at their stunning successes in Xinjiang. Not a single Chicom 9-11 yet! I wonder why?!?

… but the Afghan’s and Paki’s have never responded well to attempts to intimidate them.

We all of us should take heart in that old bromide, “If at first you don’t succeed …”

I mean, it’s nothing that some disinfecting (canned) sunshine can’t cure.

      • James Dorsey is a China man.

Yes, China’s invested yuge sums in Pakistan, a critical node for the BRI.

China’s distressed watching Pakistan act like Pakistan. Balochis are only one of several separatist movements that plague Iran.

Saudi pays assorted tribes to indulge their craziness at a distance. Like cultivating viciousness in a dog, it’s not without risk. May savage Iran in the short run, but undermines welfare in the neighborhood.

  23. State Senate votes to allow felons to serve on juries

ALBANY — The state Senate passed a bill Tuesday that will allow convicted felons to serve on juries.

Felons who have completed their full sentencing, parole or supervision periods will be welcomed onto the juror’s bench. There is currently a lifetime ban on felons serving as as jurors..

“When people go through that system, they should be allowed to reenter society,” state Senator Jamaal Bailey (D-Bronx) said during the debate on the bill, which passed 36-25.

“We talk about being a society of second chances, but I guess second chances depend on certain zip codes to some folks, I don’t know. Second chances matter.”

“If you talk to a layperson, people are calling up the country clerk’s office to try and get out of jury duty,” Bailey added.

But Senator Republican Minority Leader John Flanagan (R-Suffolk) blasted the proposal, calling it an addition to the Democrats’ “Criminal Bill of Rights.”

Trump May Invoke ‘Insurrection Act’ to REMOVE Illegal Immigrants From U.S.

President Trump will do anything within the law to solve the problem of illegal immigration. The Daily Caller is reporting that he may use an obscure 1807 law called the Insurrection Act as his next step to help solve the illegal immigration crisis. The Insurrection Act is a United States federal law that governs the ability of the President of the United States to deploy military troops within the United States to put down lawlessness, insurrection, and rebellion. The report cites multiple senior administration officials say “the president intends to invoke the “tremendous powers” of the act to remove illegal immigrants from the country.”

A crucial part of the Insurrection act says:

  25. Obama’s Corrupt AG Eric Holder Viciously Attacks Bill Barr For Launching Massive Investigation Into Spygate, “He is Not Fit to Lead DOJ”

Barack Obama’s corrupt officials are all lashing out at Attorney General Bill Barr because he launched a massive investigation into the origins of Spygate.

Obama’s corrupt Attorney General Eric Holder lashed out at Bill Barr this weekend.

Holder accused Barr of protecting President Trump and asserted that the Attorney General started his probe of the Intel/FBI for political reasons.

“He is not fit to lead the DOJ,” Holder said.

HOLDER: “AG Barr has deliberately misrepresented the Mueller report. He has started examinations of the conduct of Intell/FBI personnel without a predicate-for political reasons. He is protecting the President. He does not stand up for the good people he leads. He is not fit to lead DOJ.”

  28. Huge Explosion Reported Near US Embassy in Baghdad (sputniknews, May 19, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201905191075141532-iraq-baghdad-explosion/

“An explosion has reportedly taken place near the Green Zone close to the embassy area on Sunday.

Rockets landed in the Iraqi capital in the vicinity of the United States embassy on Sunday, Sky News Arabia reported citing its source.

Iraqi authorities have not yet commented on the incident. However, Reuters cited two Baghdad-based diplomatic sources as saying that they heard the blast not far from the fortified Green Zone — the area that hosts government buildings and foreign embassies.?

?Earlier in the day, Afaq TV reported that the sound of the explosion was heard from the area where the United States embassy is situated.

In addition, some media sources reported that warning sirens were triggered by the explosion.

The reports regarding the blast come after earlier this week the US State Department ordered the recall of non-emergency government employees from the US embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil. Additionally, the US State Department urged American citizens to abandon their visits to Iraq because of threats in the region linked to “terrorism, kidnapping and armed conflict.””

  29. Pinkerton: Immigration Curbs Key to Conservative Victory in Australia and a Lesson for Trump (breitbart, May 19, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/05/19/pinkerton-immigration-curbs-key-to-conservative-victory-in-australia-and-a-lesson-for-trump/

“Electoral events have a way of keeping mainstream political observers humble, especially when the larger message is the strength of conservative nationalism.

A case in point is the recent Australian election, in which the Liberal Party (in American terms, a conservative party) won a victory over the left-leaning Labor Party. Some of the MSM outlets that couldn’t hide their surprise included the New York Times: “Prime Minister Scott Morrison Seizes a Stunning Win”; the BBC: “Morrison celebrates ‘Miracle’ win”; and CNN: “Labor loses ‘unlosable’ election.”

In the run-up to the May 18 balloting, the conventional wisdom held that Aussie voters were weary of the constant infighting in the incumbent party—Morrison is the third right-of-center prime minister in the last six years—even as minor parties, yet further to the right, have proliferated. All that confusion was a formula, the pundits said, for a left-wing comeback.

To be sure, some sharp observers, such as Henry Olsen of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, veered from the herd. As Olsen wrote in the Washington Post on May 17, the day before the balloting, “While the betting markets think Labor will win, some savvy observers aren’t so sure”—and he quoted one expert as suggesting that Morrison, as the incumbent, had the edge.

Moreover, Olsen continued, Morrison had the global wind of conservative nationalism at his back. Donald Trump may be a unique figure, he wrote, but the ideas of Trumpism are not unique to the U.S.: “The same patterns of populism, cultural conflict and the movement of well-off and educated center-right voters away from their traditional party are happening around the globe.”

And as is the case with many countries, the hottest issue in Australia is immigration. Indeed, it’s worth pausing over Australia’s situation—and if we do so pause, then the conservative win Down Under starts to make sense.

Australia is an island almost the size of the continental U.S., and yet it has a population of just 25 million. To put it another way, Australia is 95 percent the size of the lower 48 states, geographically, and yet has less than eight percent of the American population.

In the meantime, in Australia’s corner of the Asia Pacific region, other countries, teeming with huge, and mostly poor, populations, loom nearby. For instance, Indonesia, a nation of 264 million just a few hundred miles away, is 87 percent Muslim, and increasingly under the sway of Sharia law. Then there’s Brunei, where homosexuality is punishable by death. And even closer is the nation of Papua-New Guinea, whose eight million people have a standard of living less than one-twentieth that of Australia. And of course, the whole of Asia numbers in the billions, including the economic and military juggernaut of China.

So it’s not surprising that immigration is the issue in Oz. In fact, Australia has long had a notoriously tough policy on migrants and refugees, starting with the principle: No refugees by boat. Or, as Australians sometimes put it, “If You Come the Wrong Way, You Will Never Get to Stay.”

Not surprisingly, Australia’s tough policy is loathed by the international left. The magazine Foreign Policy, for example, refers to “Australia’s refugee gulag.” And international NGOs have jumped in with the same critique; a staffer for Amnesty International wrote for Al-Jazeera (that hub of human-rights champions) that Australia’s immigration policies are “inhumane, unlawful, unsustainable, costly, and damaging to a country’s reputation.”

Of course, no international liberal cause would be complete without the hypocritical assistance of the United Nations, which regularly criticizes Australia.

Indeed, in 2018, the UN’s laughably-named Human Rights Council blasted Australia for its purported “escalating cycle of repression” that has caused “massive abuse” of would-be immigrants. Yes, that’s the same Human Rights Council whose members include such oppressive states as China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

Yet despite such international lecturing, Australians have stuck to their guns.

In point of fact, Australia does allow in a fair number of immigrants, and yet for the most part, newcomers are admitted with an eye toward skills and employability—and no doubt that’s one reason why Australia has enjoyed 27 years without a recession.

Indeed, Australia’s immigration policy is so successful that it has come to the attention of the Trump administration, which seeks to shift U.S. policy in the same productive direction.

According to data released last week by the Trump White House as part of its new immigration initiative, some 68 percent of legal immigrants to Australia (and there are no illegal immigrants to speak of) are allowed in on the basis of the nation’s need for employees and skills. By contrast, the same percentage for the U.S. is just 12 percent, as policy here has long been heavily tilted toward non-economic factors, such as family reunification, humanitarian entry, and the dictates of the diversity lottery. Now, the Trump proposal aims to raise the immigration percentage for employment and skill all the way up to 57 percent.

Yet in the meantime, it shouldn’t be so surprising that Australia wants to stick with what works—or, more precisely, who works.

So now we’re beginning to see why Morrison’s right-wing party won the recent election. During the campaign, Morrison’s allies ripped their left-wing opponents as “soft on turning back boats.” Such tough rhetoric was disturbing, of course, to the MSM. Just last month the New York Times quoted one Yvonne Maringa, described as an English immigrant of Zimbabwean descent, as saying, “I think there’s a limited understanding still of migrant communities and their needs.” Well, yes. Morrison did run on an Australia First platform. And as the election results show, it resonated with Australians.

One last data point clinches the argument about the popularity of immigration restriction. Last year, the Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank, released a national poll on top issues, including, of course, immigration. It found that in just four years, the percentage of Aussies saying immigration is “too high” has jumped by nearly half, from 37 percent in 2014 to 54 percent in 2018.

So we can see: Morrison and his fellow conservatives just had to stay with their familiar restrictionist playbook. To put it another way, they had to ignore liberal international opinion and focus, instead, on conservative Australian opinion.

    They did, and they won.

In fact, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the restrictionist wave is still surging. This prospect, of course, is disturbing to the left; here’s a recent headline from The Nation: “Australia’s Brutal Refugee Policy Is Inspiring the Far Right in the EU and Beyond: In an age of refugee demonization, Australia was well ahead of the curve.”

We needn’t agree with the “d” word, demonization, to agree, nonetheless, that there’s a nationalist curve worldwide. And if Australia is ahead of the curve, well, there’s plenty of room for others to ride it, too—including here in the U.S.”

Thursday on the radio, LevinTV host Mark Levin called out the hypocrisy of the Democrats after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., was caught on the phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif earlier Thursday, and the media said nothing.

“He’s the foreign minister to an enemy state that seeks to attack American military personnel in the Middle East, that seeks to put nuclear warheads on ICBMs so they can reach the United States. It is a terrorist regime, an Islamo-Nazi regime in Tehran, that has killed Americans, that funds Hezbollah to kill Americans, that funds Hamas to kill, and is a threat to our national security, obviously,” Levin said. “What in the hell is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee doing talking on an iPhone around the Capitol to Javad Zarif?”

“What is it with these Democrats fronting for this Islamo-Nazi regime that wants to kill Americans and Jews in Israel? You’ve got Frankenfeinstein, you’ve got … John Kerry — or the real Frankenstein — giving aid and comfort to the enemy! It’s not enough that they released $150 billion to this regime; now they’re giving it advice, against the president of the United States. You want to talk about the Logan Act? You want to talk about collusion?”

BAGHDAD (AP) — A rocket was fired into the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone Sunday night, landing less than a mile from the sprawling U.S. Embassy, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

The apparent attack, which Iraq’s state-run news agency said did not cause any casualties, came amid heightened tensions across the Persian Gulf, after the White House ordered warships and bombers to the region earlier this month to counter an alleged, unexplained threat from Iran. The U.S. also has ordered nonessential staff out of its diplomatic posts in Iraq.

It was the first such attack since September, when three mortar shells landed in an abandoned lot inside the Green Zone.

There was no immediate comment from the State Department or the U.S. Embassy in Iraq on Sunday’s attack.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack that took place after sunset when many Baghdad residents were indoors breaking their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Associated Press reporters on the east side of the Tigris River, opposite the Green Zone, heard an explosion, after which alert sirens sounded briefly in Baghdad.

Iraqi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasoul told The Associated Press that a Katyusha rocket fell near the statue of the Unknown Soldier, less than a mile from the U.S. Embassy. He said the military is investigating the cause but that the rocket was believed to have been fired from east Baghdad. The area is home to Iran-backed Shiite militias.

Note: This does not smell well!

  32. A Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official conceded this week that Beijing had imposed draconian restrictions on Ramadan practices in Muslim-majority Xinjiang, denying reports of a blanket ban on activities during the holy month.
Dolkun Isa, the exiled head of the Germany-based World Uighur Congress, told Voice of America (VOA) that the CCP has intensified efforts to stifle Ramadan this year, urging Muslims to eat pork in violation of Islamic rules, imposing fasting restrictions, banning headscarves, prohibiting prayer, and other hurdles to the holy month.

His revelation came on Thursday, the same day that Radio Free Asia (RFA), citing a new report by the U.S.-based Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), reported that Beijing is implementing a policy of “linguistic imperialism” to marginalize the ethnic group’s language with the purpose of eradicating their “ethnic identity.”

China has long oppressed its Uighur (or Uyghur) minority with the intent of erasing their religious and ethnic identity by coercing them into pledging loyalty to the communist party.

VOA learned from Isa “that Uighurs who are working in the public sector and students are asked to appear daily at canteens during lunch or they will be accused of secretly fasting and hiding ‘extremist’ tendencies.”

  33. Nellie Ohr Destroyed Spouse’s Government Email Records on Russian Influence Operations
    BY MARK TAPSCOTT
    May 19, 2019 Updated: May 19, 2019 Share

Nellie Ohr, wife of former U.S. Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr and an analyst working for the opposition research firm Fusion GPS, deleted messages about Russian influence operations from her husband’s government email account, according to documents obtained by Judicial Watch.

“Thanks! I’m deleting these emails now,” Nellie Ohr told her husband in an April 20, 2016, email at the end of a thread of exchanges between the Ohrs, Bruce’s Department of Justice (DOJ) assistant Lisa Holtyn, and Stefen Bress, a first secretary at the German Embassy in Washington.

The subject line of the emails was “Analyst Russian Organized Crime – April 2016,” in which Bress offered to provide two Russia analysts for an “analytical exchange” discussion with Ohr, Holtyn, and other unnamed DOJ officials of multiple topics, including the “Impact of Russian influence operations in Europe (‘PsyOps/InfoWar’).”

During the email exchange, in addition to the hour-long meeting at DOJ, Holtyn, on behalf of the Ohrs, invited Bress, his wife, and the analysts to the Ohr’s home for dinner.
