“The International Criminal Court met in The Hague on Tuesday to look into the United Arab Emirates’ request to take a series of measures to protest its rights against Qatar’s manipulation of legal proceedings at international agencies.
The UAE asked the UN’s top court on Tuesday to stop Qatar “severely aggravating” the two-year-old crisis that snapped ties between Doha and Gulf states.
“Qatar has continued to aggravate the dispute and make it more difficult to resolve,” Hissa Abdulla Ahmed Al-Otaiba, the UAE ambassador to the Netherlands.
She urged the court to take urgent measures to stop Qatar’s alleged actions, warning of “irreparable harm” to the UAE’s own legal rights otherwise.
Since June 2017, Qatar has faced an economic and diplomatic boycott by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt over its support and financing of terrorism.
The UAE said on Tuesday that Qatar had blocked its own citizens from accessing an Emirati website to ease travel issues.
Doha also used state media such as the Al Jazeera channel to “spread false accusations” about the case, including claims that a hotline for Qatari citizens did not work, the UAE said.
Emirati lawyers accused Qatar of using fake documents including some with a fake British royal seal to back its legal case.
The UAE also objects to Qatar taking the case separately to the 1965 International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).
In a sign tensions are still high, the United Arab Emirates said it released Monday a Qatari military ship that had violated UAE territorial waters last week.”

“The family of Egypt’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Morsi, on Sunday said he is seeing in the holy month of Ramadan while in solitary confinement.
Morsi has been behind bars since his ousting in a bloody military coup in 2013, making this his seventh Ramadan behind bars.
He is currently being held in complete isolation, his family warned, adding this is a “deliberate … blackout on the nature and conditions of his detention.”
His son, Osama, is also being held in jail and this will be his third Ramadan while in detention. He is being held in solitary confinement as a result of his defence of his father and the constitutional legitimacy of his presidency.
The family called on the international community and rights groups to highlight the Egyptian authorities’ human rights abuses.

Al Saud shared on his Twitter account a video in which Prince Faisal Bin Bandar Bin Abdulaziz, the prince of Riyadh, is seen refusing to drink coffee offered to him after he learned that it was made in Turkey.
“I, as a Saudi citizen, announce today that I will boycott any product made in Turkey or even which passed through Turkish customs until it [Turkey] amends its policy with us… Neither we nor our government needs them and their products,” he said.

“At least 473 irregular migrants were held in Turkey on Tuesday, according to security sources, reports Anadolu Agency.
In the northwestern Edirne province, gendarmerie forces and border troops launched an operation in Havsa, Ipsala, Meric, and Uzunkopru districts and held 442 irregular migrants, said a source who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
The migrants – including Palestinian, Syrian, Iraqi, Moroccan, and Afghan nationals – were attempting to illegally cross to Europe.
Separately, in an operation in Canakkale, an Aegean province, the gendarmerie held 31 Afghan irregular migrants – including children and women – who were trying to illegally cross to Greece
All the migrants were later referred to provincial migration directorates.

“Former inmates of China’s Muslim internment camps have spoken out about their experiences, saying they were forced into labour camps to work for less than the minimum wage.
Gulzira Auelkhan, a 39-year-old Chinese citizen of Kazakh descent, says she was part of a network of mostly Muslim minorities in Xinjiang who pass from what China calls “vocational training centres” to factories where they are forced to work.
As Auelkhan toiled stitching gloves in a factory in China’s troubled Xinjiang region, her managers made no secret of where her production would be sold.
“They told us openly that the gloves will be sold abroad, so we should do a good job,” Auelkhan recalled of a labour stint she says was enforced by Chinese “re-education” officials.
China says the education centres are part of its efforts to fight terrorism and separatism in Xinjiang – a region populated by mostly Muslim minority groups – and denies any use of forced labour.
But rights groups, and former workers like Auelkhan, say the practice used against Chinese minorities is widespread and at least one foreign company has dropped its Chinese supplier over the concerns.
Auelkhan says she was transferred to the glove factory at the Jiafang industrial estate in Xinjiang’s Yining county after spending 15 months in two different “re-education” facilities.
More than a million people from Muslim minorities – mostly ethnic Uighurs, but also Kazakhs like Auelkhan, Kyrgyz and Hui – are being held in internment centres across Xinjiang, according to a United Nations panel of experts.
Auelkhan has residency rights in Kazakhstan but had travelled to China to see family when she was detained and put into a re-education centre.
She said life in the camps was brutal, with residents struck over the head with electrified batons for spending more than two minutes in the bathroom.
Auelkhan said she was paid only 320 yuan ($48/42 euros) for close to two months’ work before her time at the factory was curtailed in December and she was allowed to return to her family in Kazakhstan. Xinjiang’s average minimum wage ranges between 820 and 1,460 yuan per month, according to official statistics.
Beijing and officials in the region have fiercely denied any connection between the camps and under-paid labour.
A representative of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region Government Press Office told AFP by email that there was “no labour contract between Education and Training Centers and enterprises” and “no enterprise obtains labour from training centres”.
But rights groups insist the connection exists and some companies have started taking notice.
In January, Badger Sportswear, a firm based in the US state of North Carolina, announced it would stop sourcing clothing from its Xinjiang supplier Hetian Taida over concerns it was using forced labour linked to the “re-education” campaign.
Auelkhan believes she was only released from forced labour because of a public campaign launched by her husband and supported by a Xinjiang-focused rights group in Almaty.
Several Kazakhs told rights groups their relatives detained or missing in China’s Xinjiang have swapped “re-education” camps for other forms of confinement
During a recent visit to the Almaty office of the Ata Jurt rights group dedicated to supporting relatives of the Xinjiang missing, AFP spoke to several Kazakhs who claim their relatives have merely swapped “re-education” for other forms of confinement.
One of them, Aibota Janibek, 34, said her sister Kunikei Janibek telephoned her from Xinjiang in January after months without contact to confirm she had been “assigned a job” by the state at a carpet factory in Shawan county.
Aibota Janibek has since lost touch with her sister, but heard from other relatives that she was transferred from the carpet factory to another position.
“A relative told me she is now at a factory that makes paper towels for airplanes,” Janibek said.”

“ASDA’A Burson Cohn and Wolfe (ASDA’A BCW), a public relations firm based in the Middle East, published their 2019 Arab Youth Survey, titled “A Call for Reform.” The year’s survey is the 11th edition of the report which provides insight into the attitudes of Arab youth in the hopes of aiding both the public and private sector in decision and policy-making.
The survey included young people between the ages of 18 to 24 in 15 Arab states and territories. Those territories include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen.
Arab youths are the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s largest demographic with 65% of the Arab population younger than 30. ASDA’A BCW (Burson Cohn & Wolfe) considers an understanding of the age group especially important as they are the “custodians of the future.”
The report’s findings cover a wide variety of topics from economic concerns and unemployment to mental health and drug use. The researchers conducted 3,300 face-to-face interviews in Arabic and English in order to understand the attitudes and opinions of Arab youth.
One of the study’s findings was that young people in the Arab world feel that religion plays too great of a role in the political and social aspects of life and is due for reform. Commenting on the study is Dr. Mohammed Shahrour, a well-known scholar of modern Islam and a professor at the University of Damascus. Dr. Shahrour said that “young Arabs remain attached and devoted to their faith despite being unconvinced of some inherited thoughts and religious structures.”
In addition to conflicts with the role of religion, 75% of Arab youths are unhappy with education in their home country. The majority, given the choice, would pursue higher education in the West rather than anywhere in the MENA region.
When asked which country in the world they would most like to live in, the top five responses from youth were the UAE, Canada, the U.S., Turkey, and the UK. The preference for the UAE was at 44%. These statistics reveal the extent to which the UAE has benefitted from embracing global values to become seen as a model for the rest of the region.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are where 80% of respondents said they primarily got their news. Social media is increasingly popular among youth and seen as more trustworthy than traditional media.
Concerns about the future
Additionally, young Arabs expressed a desire to see an end to regional conflicts and a desire for increased access to medical care especially that which can address issues of mental health. Concerningly, many felt that it was easy to access drugs in their countries and believe that drug use is on the rise across the region.
The issue that weighs most heavily on the minds of young Arabs is the economy. Young people see the biggest issues in the Middle East to be the rising cost of living and unemployment. Because of these economic issues, many young people both seek and feel entitled to government support. Jihad Azour, the Director of the International Monetary Fund’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, expressed sympathy for the complaints of the youth and agrees that governments across the region must take action.
Morocco, where youth employment is 17.9% of the total labor force, has been experiencing feelings of unrest and dissatisfaction from the youth who feel frustrated by the lack of economic opportunities they perceive.
Director Jihad Azour said: “What is needed is a new social contract between MENA governments and citizens that ensures accountability, transparency and a commitment to the principle that no one is left behind.””

Several Injured in Suburban Denver School Shooting, Colorado Police Say
8 injured in shooting at Denver STEM school; 2 students in custody
DENVER – Two students opened fire at a suburban Denver STEM school on Tuesday, authorities said, injuring eight of their peers.
Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the two suspects, one adult male and one juvenile male, both students at the school, are in custody. The scene is secure, he said.
All of the shooting victims are students ages 15 and older. Some are in critical condition and others are in stable condition, he said.
“This is a terrible event,” Spurlock said at an evening press conference. “This is something that nobody wants to happen in their community. We’re going to investigate that and we will get to the bottom of it to figure out how and what has occurred.”
The suspects began shooting in two separate classrooms at STEM School Highlands Ranch, a public charter school with more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

6.2 million in Germany ‘cannot read or write German properly’ (thelocal, May 7, 2019)

“Many of our readers will be only too familiar with the struggles of learning German. A new study has shown that these difficulties are by no means limited to tourists and expats.
A newly released study has shown 6.2 million people in Germany – just under eight percent of the total population – cannot read or write properly in German.
While far-right and anti-immigration parties may lay the blame at the feet of migrants and refugees, native speakers also struggle.
The study, completed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, found that 52.6 percent of the 6.2 million have German as their mother tongue.
The remaining 47.4 percent (2.9 million) have a migrant background and have learned another language before German. Just under half of those use German more often than their mother tongue despite the associated difficulties.
Literacy levels were determined by whether or not participants were able to understand coherent texts, even shorter ones.
A success?
While the figures may seem high, there has been an overall decrease in the number of people with low-level literacy living in Germany.
A similar study completed in 2011 found 7.5 million people with limited reading and writing skills, approximately 1.3 million more than in the current report.
Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) told DPA that the findings amounted to a “success for our education system”.
A hindrance?
The lack of German language skills didn’t seem to be as much of a hindrance as it may seem. Two thirds of those with low literacy skills are gainfully employed.
One in five haven’t finished high school, while two in five have not gone onto further education.
The study is entitled ‘Living With Low Literacy’ and will be released publicly in Berlin this Tuesday. The study looked at 7,200 German-speaking adults between the ages of 18 and 64 and research took place in the summer of 2018…”
