According to The Wall Street Journal, US intelligence has found out that Iran has plans to target US forces in Iraq and possibly in Syria, while it is also going to stage attacks in Ba-el-Mandeb strait near Yemen through its proxies and in the Persian Gulf with its own armed drones. Iran reportedly may seek to attack US forces in Kuwait as well.

“The new automatic “hate-detecting” machine is claimed to assist authorities in weeding out hate speech, online abuse, and incitement of ethnic hatred. Many Swedes, however, have interpreted it as the “thought police” and an encroachment on free speech.
The Swedish Police have in collaboration with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and Uppsala University developed a hate-seeking mechanism to combat hate speech. To help the machine reach its full capacity, fellow Swedes have been urged to feed it with samples of hate speech (so far limited to the Swedish language).
On Hatomat.se, visitors are greeted by a robot who says “I eat hate”, “give me some more hate, please”, and “thanks for your hate”.
“The material will eventually help law enforcement authorities to investigate threats, violations and harassment of groups or individuals in digital environments”, FOI explained.
The purpose of the algorithm, dubbed Hatomat (“Hate Automaton” or “Hate-o-mat”) and financed by the innovation agency Vinnova, is to automatically detect crimes such as hate speech or inciting ethnic hatred. The ultimate goal is to develop a mechanism that can be used by social media platforms and newsmakers.
“By asking for help from those who are subjected to hateful comments, we hope to collect more training data and thus develop better algorithms”, FOI researcher Johan Fernquist said.
However, many Swedes have turned out to be wary of the innovation, expressing fears of censorship, thought police and cracking down on dissenting views. Some went so far as to accuse the police and FOI of “Stasi manners” after East Germany’s notorious secret police.

Treasury denies Democrats’ demand for Trump tax returns, again
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has denied congressional Democrats’ request for six years of President Donald Trump’s personal and business tax returns, writing that the request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose” and therefore the Dept is “not authorized” to release the returns.
Mnuchin added that the Department of Justice had informed Treasury, “that it intends to memorialize its advice in a published legal opinion as soon as practical.”
“Out of respect for the deadlines previously set by the Committee, and consistent with our commitment to a prompt response, I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee’s request,” he wrote.
He said that Treasury would work with the committee “to provide information concerning the Committee’s stated interest in how the IRS conducts mandatory examinations of Presidents, as provided by the Internal Revenue Manual.
“If the Committee is interested, we remain committed to providing such an accommodation,” Mnuchin wrote.

Nadler schedules vote to hold Barr in contempt of Congress

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler scheduled a vote Monday to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for not giving the committee special counsel Robert Mueller’s full unredacted report.
The New York Democrat gave Barr a deadline of 9 a.m. Monday to turn in the full report with no redactions, which many Republicans believe would be dangerous due to the possibly sensitive material, which could be leaked. Nadler has now scheduled the congressional contempt vote for Wednesday, May 8 at 10 a.m.
“Even in redacted form, the Special Counsel’s report offers disturbing evidence and analysis that President Trump engaged in obstruction of justice at the highest levels. After John Bolton and Mike Pompeo came out in the last few days with pointed warnings to Iran – and specific reference to the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) Carrier Strike Group, and an Air Force bomber task force – there were a lot of questions.
But there was one big one. What was this about?
To frame the discussion, it’s useful to put down a marker from someone who obviously remembers well that carrier deployments have been routine, and done on a schedule, for a long, long time. This observer is also, clearly, a – let us say, a Trump (and Bolton) skeptic. He points out the routineness and scheduling factors advisedly:

The violent spasm from Hamas-run Gaza isn’t just another episode in the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict or merely another incident in a cycle of violence in which the Palestinians are given no agency. It is a significant escalation that tests the prevailing rules of the game with Israel where Iran is demonstrating its ability to intensify the conflict by meddling in Palestinian affairs.

Beginning around 10 a.m. the next morning, the first of hundreds of rockets were fired by Hamas and PIJ into Israel, with around 700 launched toward Israeli homes and infrastructure by Sunday evening, killing four civilians and injuring dozens. The Trump administration is readying a new salvo of sanctions on Cuba and Russia for their destabilizing activities in Venezuela that have helped prop up Nicolás Maduro, according to the U.S. Special Representative for Venezuela, who told the Washington Free Beacon in a wide-ranging interview that America is still considering military options to deal with a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country as Maduro refuses to relinquish power.
Senior U.S. officials continue to hold regular talks with Juan Guaidó, whom the United States recognizes as Venezuela’s interim president, as he seeks to build momentum for popular protests against Maduro, whom the United States accuses of stealing the country’s elections.
As protests reach a breaking point, with scores of Venezuelans struggling to get basic necessities, Maduro has grown closer with traditional U.S. foes such as Russia, Cuba, and even Iran, according to Elliott Abrams, a veteran U.S. foreign policy hand who now serves as the Trump administration’s special representative for Venezuela.

Left-wing pundits have been presenting the migrant caravan heading north through Mexico as a group of refugees from crime and chaos in Honduras, seeking asylum in countries to the north. Because there is a high level of crime and a pattern of social breakdown in Honduras, this characterization, whether it’s fully accurate or not, can be seen as logical. (In fact, I don’t doubt that at least some people in the caravan set out for that reason.)
There is good reason to question it, however, starting with the fact that the further it gets from Honduras, the bigger the caravan grows. It seemed to double in size, to some 3,000, on its progress through Guatemala. Guatemala is also a troubled nation, of course; perhaps a very large number of people there all decided spontaneously to join in and seek asylum from Mexico and the United States.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: While Cairo is exerting its influence in Gaza to avoid a new conflict and mediate a period of calm, Iran sees Gaza as one more base from which to grow and control a proxy terrorist army.
At the start of April, Hebrew media reports quoted unnamed Israeli security officials as saying that the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror faction, which possesses a rocket arsenal even larger than that of Hamas, was planning a major attack on Israeli targets.
The disclosure of this information appeared to achieve its goal of discouraging the perpetrators, and no attack transpired. But the fact that PIJ was reportedly planning an incident that could have upset Egyptian attempts to restore calm to the Gaza Strip could hint at a wider struggle taking place within Gaza between Egypt and Iran.
Gaza’s ruling regime, Hamas, has reportedly faced demands from Egypt in recent months to decide whether it “takes its orders from Tehran or continues to implement the understandings for calm” formulated by the head of Egyptian intelligence Abbas Kamel.
The clash of interests between these two regional powers seems clear. Egypt wishes to see Gaza calm, stable, and cut off from ISIS-affiliated terror networks in Sinai, which also threaten Egyptian security; while Iran sees Gaza as one more base from which it can exercise its radical influence and encourage the growth of a terrorist army that threatens not only Israel but the stability of the whole region.

A woman who converted to Islam seven years ago says that she has been left ‘distraught’ after sampling an Aldi vegetarian pasta sauce that she believes tastes like bacon.
Rianne Ward made her son dinner with the Cucina creamy lasagne sauce from Aldi, but says that she was left angry and upset to taste the bacon flavour.
She feared that she might have betrayed her religion by consuming pork, DerbyshireLive reports .
The 39-year-old, who lives in Derby, said that she “smelt something odd” about the sauce, labelled as vegetarian.
Supermarket Aldi has contacted DerbyshireLive to reassure customers that the product is vegetarian and explained that the sauce has a distinctive smoked flavour.
Miss Ward said she was furious when she tasted the dish because she thought that it contained bacon, which Muslims are strictly forbidden from eating.
She said: “I just sat down and my young son said ‘Mummy, this smells like bacon’.
“When I ate it, it tasted just like bacon which made me feel sick. I was absolutely seething and went back down to the store.
“I just went in with the jar of sauce and made them smell it. I thought it must have been contaminated.”
Having converted to Islam seven years ago, Miss Ward is familiar with the taste and odour of bacon.
She said: “There was no bacon in it because it had a vegetarian label but a staff member kept telling me it was a carbonara sauce.
“It isn’t. It’s just a white sauce but that shouldn’t explain why it tastes like bacon.”
Miss Ward has since lodged a formal complaint with Aldi and has kept some of the dish in her fridge as evidence, still concerned that the sauce may contain meat.
She told DerbyshireLive she’s hoping to be compensated for what has happened because she feels badly let down by the product and the company.
She added: “I’m absolutely furious. I’ve been a Muslim for years now and avoided bacon for so long.
“Then this happens. I felt like I’d betrayed my religion. Aldi have told me they are going to test the sauce to see if it has been contaminated. It’s just not on.”
A spokesperson from Aldi told DerbyshireLive that the product is vegetarian but does contain a smoked flavouring.
The spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear Miss Ward is unhappy with this product and can reassure her the lasagne sauce is completely meat free.
“The product is flavoured with smoked salt which gives it its distinctive taste.”

If anti-Semitism is thriving among Americans, there’s no sign of it in any of the latest polls. Americans are the least anti-Semitic people in the world. A 2017 poll, taken at the height of a spike in anti-Semitism, showed that 14% of Americans held anti-Semitic attitudes. That was up from 10% in 2015 and 12% in 2013. That’s not a great trend, but it also shows just how narrow the scope of the problem is.
It’s also dramatically different than the numbers from similar polls conducted in Europe.
How then can we explain the rise in anti-Semitic violence? What about the increased harassment of Jews on campuses and in major cities? And why is there a rise in anti-Semitic discourse?
There’s no climate of hatred in America. The rising anti-Semitic rhetoric and violence are the work of small but highly active political groups who have become disproportionately influential in public life.
The rise in anti-Semitism isn’t happening among ordinary Americans, but among a narrow group of influencers. An anti-Semitic cartoon in the New York Times isn’t representative of the country. Neither is Rep. Ilhan Omar. Nor are Richard Spencer or the alt-righters who tweet their own anti-Semitic memes.

“A television crew working for Belgian broadcaster RTL was attacked by migrants at the Gare du Nord station in Brussels while they were filming an investigation on the refusal of bus drivers in the city to stop at the ‘rapidly deteriorating’ location.
The television crew were attacked on Sunday morning while the crew were trying to interview a bus driver and filming a bus belonging to the De Lijn company following a refusal of drivers to serve the major capital-city transport interchange with their vehicles.
According to the journalist, “The individual got out of the station and shot toward our reporters. He then quickly approached and violently shoved our reporters. ‘We are not animals,’ he said while attacking our colleagues,” RTL reports.
Drivers of De Lijn have complained that the state of the station has rapidly deteriorated both in terms of physical safety and in terms of health, claiming previously that they fear migrants may be spreading diseases such as tuberculosis, scabies and malaria following a report by another Belgian media outlet that traces of the diseases had been found among the migrants living at the station.
City transport company STIB announced this week it would be suspending services to the station, re-routing buses to nearby stops, because of health concerns. The suspension took effect Tuesday morning.
The ACV, ACOD and ACLVB unions have all expressed support for the drivers who have been complaining about the dangerous environment surrounding the area for the past several months and said that until the conditions are improved they would support the drivers not stopping at the station.
The spreading of diseases among migrants living on the streets, particularly the scabies parasite, has become a major problem in Paris as well with NGOs who worked with migrants in 2017 complaining that cases had seen a substantial rise. The prevalence of scabies even forced a group of migrants to vacate a squat within a Paris university after members of the university staff started to become infected as well.
Paris has also seen public transport workers refuse to stop at certain stations due to drug use and violence in areas where homeless migrants often congregate.
Drivers working for the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), listed several stations last year, including Porte de La Chapelle, well-known for being a hub of homeless migrants, as stations they would not stop at due to the danger both to them and to their passengers.”

Twitter Suspends Ocasio-Cortez Parody Account For Being ‘Misleading’
Social media platforms have been slashing away at conservatives for years, often with sneaky “shadow bans,” but now they’re beginning to be more brazen about it. Just last month, Twitter suspended vocal conservative actor James Woods after he posted a quote from poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson.
On Monday, Twitter went so far as to ban — permanently — a popular parody account that mocks Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for all the dumb things she says (like last week when she marveled at how plants grow in dirt).
The Twitter page, titled @AOCPress once had 85,000 followers. Now, the page simply says “This account has been suspended.” The account was created and operated by Mike Morrison, who also had his personal account — with more than 50,000 followers — permanently banned.
But Twitter’s reasoning for the ban was, in a word, bizarre. In an email to Morrison, Twitter cited the rule that “you may not register or create fake and misleading accounts,” Human Events writes. “The tech giant then followed that statement by saying ‘you may use Twitter pseudonymously or as a parody.’ “
