Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • Sri Lanka expels over 600 foreigners, including 200 Islamic clerics, after Easter Day bombings

      COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka has expelled over 600 foreign nationals, including around 200 Islamic clerics, since the Easter suicide bombings blamed on a local terrorist group, a minister said on Sunday (May 5).

      Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena said the clerics had entered the country legally, but amid a security crackdown after the attacks were found to have overstayed their visas, for which fines were imposed and they were expelled from the island.

      “Considering the current situation in the country, we have reviewed the visas system and took a decision to tighten visa restrictions for religious teachers,” Mr Abeywardena said.

      “Out of those who were sent out, about 200 were Islamic preachers.”

      The Easter Sunday bombings that killed 257 people and wounded nearly 500 were led by a local cleric who is known to have travelled to neighbouring India and had made contact with jihadists there.

      The minister did not give the nationalities of those who have been expelled, but police have said many foreigners who have overstayed their visas since the Easter attacks were from Bangladesh, India, Maldives and Pakistan.

      “There are religious institutions which have been getting down foreign preachers for decades,” Abeywardena said.

      “We have no issues with them, but there are some which mushroomed recently. We will pay more attention to them.”

      The minister said the government was overhauling the country’s visa policy following fears that foreign clerics could radicalise locals for a repeat of the April 21 suicide bombings, which targeted three Christian churches and three luxury hotels.

      Sri Lanka has imposed a state of emergency since the attacks and given wide powers to troops and police to arrest and detain suspects for long periods.

      House-to-house searches are being carried out across the country looking for explosives and propaganda material of Islamic extremists.

    “The US earlier terminated waivers for several Iranian oil-buying countries, once again threatening them with sanctions if they continue doing business with Tehran. The Islamic Republic has slammed these actions, vowing to continue oil exports despite Washington’s efforts.

    Iran has started directing its efforts at organising the sale of its oil via alternative routes to circumvent the effectiveness of US sanctions against the country’s energy sector, Deputy Oil Minister Amir Hossein Zamaninia told IRNA news agency without specifying any details.

    “We have mobilised all of the country’s resources and are selling oil in the ‘grey market'”, he said.

    At the same time, the deputy minister admitted that the volumes from daily sales won’t be able to reach the export levels seen prior to the US exit from the Iran nuclear deal, which lifted international sanctions from Tehran. Zamaninia didn’t provide any estimates about the volumes of oil sales on the “grey market”, but noted that the government will have to “make serious decisions about [Iran’s] financial and economic management”.

    Speaking about the “grey market” scheme of selling Iranian oil the deputy minister stressed that it in no way can be viewed as “smuggling” as it’s merely a measure to counter sanctions that are neither “just” nor “legitimate”.

    The US earlier ended waivers given to several states, importing Iranian crude. The waivers prevented these countries from falling under American sanctions as long as they abided by the allowed daily import limits. The decision to end these waivers has caused “regret and concern” in the EU, Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said…”

    “In October 2018 British authorities closed an unregistered educational institution in East London that taught its students extremist material and tried to recruit an “army” of children to conduct terror attacks in London.

    Darul Uloom Islamic schools in the United Kingdom, some of which were earlier found to be spreading radical teachings, promoting intolerance towards other religions and misogyny, are continuing to train a new generation of British imams, the Daily Mail reported, citing a secret government report.

    The media counted 48 such schools around Britain, using the so-called Dars-E-Nizami syllabus. The latter is based on the literal understanding of the Koran, which is widespread among such terrorist organisations as Daesh* and the Taliban*.

    “UK-based training provided by Darul Ulooms results in the development of extremist views because the institutions are highly conservative and often fail to address the challenge facing Muslims in modern Britain”, a source familiar with report told the newspaper.

    The UK Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) has already criticised at least four Darul Uloom schools for their programmes, which taught students “stereotypical views on the roles of men and women” and that dancing and music are “acts of the devil”. The leaflets with the latter statement were found by Ofsted on the premises of the Darul Uloom High School in Birmingham, but its spokesman claimed they had been handed out by “an outsider”.

    The same school was also accused of teaching its 175 students hatred of certain races, such as Jews and Hindus, as well other religions, in a 2011 investigation by Britain’s Channel 4. Another Darul Uloom school for girls, also ended up in the epicetre of a scandal after one of its former students revealed that the establishment taught her and others that husbands have the right to beat and rape their wives, thus making “Allah happy”.

    Darul Uloom schools are not the only Islamic educational institutions in the spotlight of late. In 2018 British authorities jailed a teacher at one private Islamic school, who was recruiting children for an “army” that would carry out terrorist attacks in the capital. The establishment itself was fined because it was operating without a license.”

    “Hundreds of regular Austrian citizens expressed to a national newspaper their views on migration, with some saying they felt like foreigners in their own country.

    The comments flooded in, partly in reaction to populist Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache commenting on the concept of “population replacement” and in response to an opinion article in Austria’s largest newspaper Kronen Zeitung that agreed that demographic changes are a reality but which criticised Strache’s term for being a “conspiracy.”

    Kronen Zeitung republished some of the “hundreds” of responses they received to the column with many readers saying they felt that mass migration had changed Austria to the point where some felt highly alienated.

    “The mood in our condominium has deteriorated so much that we (65 and 68) are ready to move away to finally be able to live in peace again,” one comment read, while another lamented the trend of foreigners not learning the German language.

    “In our elementary school out of consideration for foreign cultures no more excursions are made, the diet is adapted to religious wishes, the violence of the foreign elementary school boys is frightening,” one said, while another observed, “Foreign-language parents with their children do not bother to speak our language.”

    In at least two Austrian classrooms as of 2017, there are not only a majority of migrant-background pupils but no native Austrians at all and few, if any, speak German.

    The year before in 2016, an Austrian teacher spoke out about what she labelled a “lost generation” of migrant-background children due to the fact many, despite being born in Austria, had not learnt German before entering school, limiting their educational and future job prospects.

    “On the streets, in the public transport and the municipal buildings: We feel like foreigners in our home,” another Kronen Zeitung reader said.

    The Austrian newspaper’s readers are not the only ones to express feelings of alienation due to mass migration. In the United States, the Washington Post revealed that working class people were also feeling isolated and alienated due to the lack of English-speakers in their workplaces as a result of mass migration.”

    “Pope Francis urged Bulgarians on Sunday to open their hearts and homes to migrants, arguing that a country like Bulgaria, which is losing so much of its population to emigration, should well understand the forces that drive people to leave their native lands.

    As he arrived in the Balkan nation for a two-day visit, Francis “respectfully suggested” that Bulgarians recognize that migrants are fleeing war, conflict or dire poverty “to find new opportunities in life or simply a safe refuge.”

    “To all Bulgarians, who are familiar with the drama of emigration, I respectfully suggest that you not close your eyes, your hearts or your hands — in accordance with your best tradition — to those who knock at your door,” he told government officials at the presidential palace in Sofia, the capital.

    Bulgaria’s center-right, pro-Brussels coalition government includes three nationalist, anti-migrant parties. The government has called for the European Union to close its borders to migrants and has sealed off its own border to Turkey with a barbed-wire fence.

    But the country is also losing its population at a faster clip than any other nation, according to the U.N. Bulgaria’s current 7 million people are expected to dwindle to 5.4 million by 2050 and to 3.9 million by the end of the century.

    The Argentine pope has made the plight of migrants and refugees a hallmark of his papacy, urging governments to build bridges, not walls, and to do what they can to welcome and integrate refugees. His visit falls just three weeks before the European Parliament elections across the EU’s 28 nations in which nationalist, anti-migrant parties are expected to make a solid showing.

    On Monday, Francis will visit a refugee center in a former school on the outskirts of Sofia. Radostina Belcheva of the Council of Refugee Women in Bulgaria said Francis’ visit will show solidarity with those in need.

    “But really, their whole acceptance is a matter for each of us and for our society,” Belcheva told The Associated Press.

    Bulgaria’s tough stance on refugees has been a deterrent: while some 20,000 people applied for asylum in Bulgaria in 2015, that number dwindled to 2,500 last year, according to the state refugee agency.

    From an economic standpoint, however, the EU’s poorest nation may need more immigration to stabilize its future. Bulgaria has the EU’s highest mortality rate and one of the bloc’s lowest birth rates. That, combined with tens of thousands of workers leaving the country annually to find better-paying jobs, poses serious problems for funding the country’s pension system.

    Bulgaria has the EU’s lowest average monthly salary — 575 euros ($645) — and its smallest average monthly pension, at 190 euros ($213).

    In his speech Sunday, Francis urged the government to continue working to reverse this “new demographic winter,” saying the phenomenon had “descended like a curtain of ice on a large part of Europe, the consequence of a diminished confidence in the future.”

    “Taliban insurgents stormed a police headquarters Sunday in the capital of northern Baghlan province, Afghan officials said, killing at least three people. An ongoing gun battle was continuing inside the headquarters.

    Kalil Narmgo, a doctor at the main hospital in Puli Khumri, said 45 wounded people have been transferred to the medical center, several in critical condition.

    The attack began with a large explosion outside the security headquarters, said provincial council head Safder Mohsini. He said police were taking casualties but was unable to provide an exact figure.

    A Talban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a suicide bomber had used a Humvee packed with explosives.

    The provincial governor’s spokesman, Mahmood Haqmal, confirmed Sunday’s attack on the police headquarters.

    The Taliban carry out near-daily attacks on Afghan forces even as peace efforts have accelerated to find an end to Afghanistan’s nearly 18-year war.

    In the capital, Kabul, a separate shooting killed an Afghan senator’s wife and left the lawmaker injured late Saturday.

    A police spokesman said Sunday it was unclear if the shooting inside Mohammad Afzal Shamil’s home was a personal dispute or a targeted attack, but an investigation was underway. Shamil is a member of the upper house of Parliament representing northeastern Takhar province.

    In another report form western Herat province, a roadside bomb killed three children Saturday. Jelani Farhad, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said Sunday that two children were also wounded in the attack, which took place in Gulran district.

    No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast in Herat, but Taliban insurgents often plant roadside bombs on the main roads to target Afghan government officials or security forces. In some cases these bombs miss their targets, killing civilians.”

    A drone dropped swastika-emblazoned, anti-media flyers in Sacramento Friday night outside of both an outdoor Sacramento State fundraising dinner and an Ariana Grande concert.

    Sacramento State president Robert S. Nelsen confirmed the school’s “Bites on the Bridge” dinner was bombarded by the flyers, in a statement that rebuked the leaflets’ messaging.

    The White House is considering a proposal to make it easier to deport low-income immigrants who are dependent on public benefits.

    The Department of Justice has written a draft regulation that, if implemented, would greatly expand the number of immigrants in the U.S. who could be subject to deportation for using public benefits, Reuters reported Friday. The new proposal is part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to limit immigration from low-income foreign nationals.

    Such benefits include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as “food stamps;” Supplemental Security Income (SSI) doled out to the elderly and disabled people; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Section 8 housing vouchers; and various Medicaid benefits.

    This is not the first time Trinity College Prof. Johnny Eric Williams has given his employer a black eye. In 2017, Williams, who is black, was placed on leave after he wrote, “Time to confront these inhuman white a**holes” on Twitter.

    Last month, he vented his spleen on social media again, this time tweeting on Easter Sunday that “Whiteness is terrorism” and referring to Barack and Michelle Obama as “white kneegrows.”

    But this time, Williams delivered a two-fer, tweeting a followup that read:

  22. Now it’s CNN’s turn: Second left-wing news outlet identifies Louis Farrakhn as ‘far-right’

    Are the mainstream media even paying attention any more to what they are reporting? Last Thursday, it was noted in this space that The Washington Post in a story on Facebook’s ban of extremist leaders had branded Louis Farrakhan “far-right.” This is the same Louis Farrakhan who in April declared “I am Jesus, sent here to bring about the end of the civilization of the Jews.” The same Farrakhan who is a friend of the Democrats despite his virulent anti-Semitism.

    As Ben Bowles wrote in his piece on the Post’s blunder, the paper got wind of its error before the day was out and appended a “correction” to the article.

    Not so CNN, which made the same ludicrous claim a day later, never bothering to correct it. As NewsBusters’s Kristine Marsh writes, “New Day” host Alisyn Camerota reported briefly on the controversial move by the social media giant:

  23. Sting exposes Facebook’s liberal bias, anti-Semitism once and for all

    Facebook’s anti-conservative bias takes many forms. Polls show that the more conservative a person’s politics are, the more pro-Israel he tends to be. The opposite is also true: The more liberal a person’s beliefs, the more he tends to be anti-Israel. In 2015 a non-profit organization ran a “sting” operation using Facebook member pages to see if the rumors about the site endorsing the liberal/anti-Israel stance were true.

    As the video below reveals, in December 2015, the Israel Law Center (Shurat HaDin) launched two separate hate pages on Facebook, one anti-Jewish and the other anti-Palestinian. Each post on the two pages was put up at the same time on the same day. The hate posts were similar in sentiment and language. The only difference was the target of the hate message.

    After a few posts, the group increased the hatred and antagonism of the posts using phrases such as “blood and fire to demolish the Zionist invaders” on one and “soldiers in the Israeli army knows there is a need to destroy the Arab enemy.” After a few days, the posts on the anti-Jewish site called for death to Jews and, on the anti-Palestinian page death to Muslims.

    The Israel Law Center completed the operation by independently reporting the sites to Facebook as hate page. On the day the complaints were lodged, Facebook shut down the anti-Palestinian page, emailing back to the “person” who complained:

    The 13 Russians ‘Made Up’ by the Mueller Team

    In an effort to tie their corrupt investigation to Russia, the Mueller team indicted 13 Russians after presenting their cases to a grand jury. Immediately, these indictments were suspect as everyone on to the corrupt Mueller team knew that these ‘Russians’ would never be brought to justice, even if they were real, because they would never come to the US to stand trial and risk being put in jail.

    Unfortunately for Mueller however, this too turned into a royal mess. Lawyers defending one of three Russian companies indicted along with the 13 Russians, Concord Management, showed up for court. Mueller’s team was caught off guard and never expected this. They immediately asked the judge for more time but the judge denied their pleas noting that they were the ones who indicted the Russian company in the first place.

    When the case proceeded, the Concord attorney’s noted that another of the three companies indicted by Mueller, Concord Catering, was not in existence at the time of Mueller’s indictment. They called this a case of Mueller indicting the proverbial ‘ham sandwich’.

    At a following court appearance, the attorneys representing Concord stated that the corrupt Mueller team’s allegations of 13 Russian individuals impacting the 2016 election were “made up” nonsense. The individuals were not even real.

    Concord Management’s lawyers revealed that Mueller’s team had ignored over 70 discovery requests they had made for information in the case. In response Mueller’s team offered to give Concord Management’s lawyers a massive amount of social media data from those dangerous trolls who sought to influence the US election and the majority of the data was in RUSSIAN.

    Mueller’s lawyers then admitted that they didn’t even have English translations for the Russian social media posts. However, somehow Mueller’s lawyers believe Americans were influenced by these Russian language posts?

    It was then reported that Mueller’s team didn’t want to hand over the data that had been accumulated related to the Russians because the Russians would then use the information to spy on Americans (ignoring that they supposedly already had).

    The case of the Russians quickly turned into a big joke. Mueller tried to tie the Facebook posts from the Russians to swaying the election. But in sharing that information the Mueller investigation has been far more destructive to our country than Russia.

    Wearing the trademark yellow vests of French anti-government demonstrators, they were among thousands of Libyans who flooded a central Tripoli square to rally in support of the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).

    “We are surprised by France’s conduct in the face of the Tripoli attack,” read a sign held up by the demonstrators.

    Portraits of French President Emmanuel Macron and the leaders of Egypt and Saudi Arabia were also carried by demonstrators or placed on the ground for people to trample them.

    Haftar is seen by his allies — Egypt and the United Arab Emirates — as a bulwark against Islamists who have gained a foothold in Libya after the 2011 uprising that ousted and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

    “Other countries must stop interfering in Libyan affairs,” Haifa Ferjani, a 23-year-old protester said.

    “France says it is a friend but secretly backs those attacking our city and our homes,” added the young woman.

    The French embassy in Libya on Friday tweeted — in Arabic — that Paris was “opposed to the attack” on Tripoli and urged all parties to abide by a ceasefire and engage in peace negotiations.

    Khalifa Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), based in the country’s east, launched an offensive on April 4 to take Tripoli, the western seat of the UN-recognised GNA.

    Friday’s rally came days after a smaller protest brought out dozens of “yellow jacket” demonstrators who on Tuesday also demanded the GNA sever ties with countries that “back aggression” on Tripoli.

    It also comes a day after UN envoy Ghassan Salame warned of “a widening conflagration” in other parts of the North African country.

    On Thursday GNA interior minister Fathi Bach Agha lashed out at France, accusing it directly for the first time of supporting “the criminal Haftar” and saying it was cutting security ties with Paris.

    France immediately denied the claim.

    “Tripoli’s claim of support and diplomatic cover for Haftar are completely unfounded,” a French foreign ministry official said.

    “France supports the legitimate government of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and the mediation of the UN towards an inclusive political solution in Libya,” the French presidency said in a statement.

    More than 200 people have been killed since the violence erupted, and more than 900 wounded, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

    More than 25,000 have been displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration.

    Following the visit from the deputy prime minister of Italy, Matteo Salvini, at the end of last week, Prime Minister Orbán told listeners of Kossuth Radio that by “stopping migration at sea, Matteo Salvini drove a nail into the coffin of the pro-migration politicians,” he said, “to which we [Hungary] also contributed by stopping migration on land.”

    According to figures from the United Nations’s International Organization for Migration, Mediterranean migrant sea landings had fallen from 118,914 for the whole of 2017 to 23,126 for 2018 — a massive 80 per cent drop in illegal mass migration.

    Italy had become the hotspot for illegal migrant arrivals since the European Union struck a deal with Turkey to stop the Middle East migrant flow to the continent, with Greece seeing 853,650 migrants during the whole of 2015, the year the migrant crisis began.

    After the deal, Italy saw their height of illegal landings during the migrant crisis totalling 181,436 in 2016, up from 153,842 in 2015, while the country was under the premiership of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who failed to stop the illegal flows of people.

    Ahead of the 2018 Italian general election, populist-right League party leader Matteo Salvini pledged to stop illegal migration and the NGO ships — which have been accused of being a taxi service, ferrying migrants off the coast of North Africa to Italy, Malta, and Spain — and less than a year in the role as interior minister, his policies have successfully resulted in a drop in the illegal arrivals.

    Likewise, Hungary, once a transit nation along the 2015 Balkan route for migrants travelling onwards to richer, northern Europe, saw illegal mass migration fall by more than 99 per cent in two years after Prime Minister Orbán sealed off the border with Serbia. The fencing and extra border patrols took migrant arrivals down from 391,000 in 2015, to 18,236 in 2016, to just 1,184 in 2017, according to the Hungarian government’s statistics.

    Mr Salvini visited Mr Orbán’s ‘migrant wall’ on Thursday during his trip to Hungary, with the Italian newswire service ANSA reporting the League party leader as saying, “You can only enter Italy, Hungary and Europe if you have permission.”

    The European Union, however, has maintained that mass migration cannot be stopped and must be accepted as the “new norm,” with European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos writing in December 2017, “It’s time to face the truth. We cannot and will never be able to stop migration.”

    “According to newly released forecasts from the Swedish Migration Board, the country could expect around 59,000 new migrant family reunification applications for 2019.

    The 59,000 application figure was released as part of a broader number of forecasts for the various kinds of residency permits handed out during the year as well as the costs associated with new asylum seekers. In a press release, the agency also claimed that they expected around 21,000 asylum seekers this year and another 22,000 next year.

    If all applications are accepted, combined both migrant family reunification and new asylum seekers will total around 80,000 new migrants entering the country, which would be higher than the total for 2018 where the combined number stood at just under 70,000. The reason for the larger number is a sharp increase in family reunifications, while new asylum numbers have gone down from just over 25,000 last year.

    As a result of there being fewer projected new asylum seekers in 2019, the agency also notes that costs for asylum seekers are set to decrease with the trend continuing in the coming years from around 25 billion Swedish Kronor to 15 billion by 2022.

    “For the most part, the reduction is a consequence of fewer asylum seekers in recent years. This leads to reduced housing costs but, above all, decreasing remuneration to the municipalities for asylum seekers and new arrivals received by municipalities,” said Migration Board planning director Henrik Holmer.

    While Sweden projects a decline in the number of asylum seekers, Public Employment Service Director General Mikael Sjöberg recently called for more migration into Sweden saying that the country needs more workers to fill jobs and contribute to the welfare system to keep it afloat as the population ages.

    The costs of the migrant crisis which began in 2015 have also led to calls for the retirement age in Sweden to be increased to cover the costs of social services along with pensions for those who do manage to retire.”

    Local imam Ismail Abuhelal said that the current mosque, the Växjö Muslim Foundation which was founded around 15 years ago, is simply not big enough to house the growing number of worshippers in the area, Lokaltidningen reports.

    “When we celebrate that Ramadan is over and in connection with the trip to Mecca there can be up to 2,000 people who come to the mosque, then we have had to use the old Folkets park or be outdoors,” Abuhelal said.

    The imam added that the new mosque would be a mix of traditional and modern architecture and would feature a prominent minaret, as well.

    Last year the Muslim community was able to get permission from local authorities to broadcast the call to prayer publicly, despite opposition from the populist Sweden Democrats who voiced their concerns saying, “Prayer announcements in public places and in foreign languages are not part of Swedish society.”

    Imam Abuhelal admitted that so far the community has not sought out the proper planning permission from the government to build the mosque but said he was hopeful it would be built by around 2025.

    “We may be able to get help from rich Arab countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates. A Muslim considers it a good thing to help other Muslims build a mosque where there is no mosque,” he said.

    “We have had contacts with those countries about this. We have not received any promises, but there are people there who are willing to help with money to build the mosque,” he added.

    Foreign funding of mosques has become a hotly debated topic in several European countries that are currently seeking to ban foreign-funded imams and mosques due to the often more radical forms of Islam that follow them.

    French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested a ban on foreign-funding, and in Germany, the government has considered a “Mosque tax” to allow Muslims to give their tax money directly to domestic Muslim associations.”

    Last November, Westminster University in London organized a seminar with an enticing theme: Is a Plan B for Iran possible?

    In its simplest form, the main argument was that 40 years after the Islamic Revolution, the clergy-led ruling elite was still behaving like a sect rather than a state, thus preventing Iran from behaving like a normal nation with all its merits and defects.

    In the paper that I presented, I drew on the teachings of several Iranian classical historians, most notably Abul-Fazl Beyhaqi (died in 1077 AD). Tracing the course through which the Ghaznavids, a Turkic warrior tribe, seized power in Iran and established a dynasty, Beyhaqi identifies five stages.

    The first stage is that of “conquest” when Saboktakin, the warrior-chief seizes a chunk of territory to use as a base for future episodes in his saga. In the next stage, known as “domination,” the conqueror tribe establishes itself as the predominant force within the territory seized.

    The next stage is known as “control” and sees the new ruling elite set the agenda throughout the region seized, and preventing putative rivals from challenging it on major issues.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Hints from the Russian media show that more and more Russians are starting to question Moscow’s foreign policy during Putin’s 19 years of rule. Russia needs to reevaluate its position in the world: Should it focus only on the former Soviet space, or should it expand its vision of itself in a world where it might play a much grander role?

    Open public discussion of Russian official foreign policy is rare in that country’s history. This is largely due to the traditional perception that the government correctly grasps the state’s true interests.

    In the Soviet period, foreign policy was rarely if ever discussed. The same was true during the Romanov dynasty, albeit with much more freedom and flexibility (there were even cases when public discussions were instigated by the authorities). Overall, though, public discussion was under close scrutiny and was tightly controlled by both the imperial and Soviet authorities.

    Within the Russian government, there have over the years been serious debates in which existing foreign policy initiatives were questioned, as were Russia’s overall strategic trajectory and position in the Eurasian landmass.

  45. Global News is reporting today that the Trudeau government is considering forcing social media to remove “extremist” content. Ralph Goodale, the Public Safety Minister, has declared his intentions to purge your Twitter and Facebook feeds of content the government deems problematic or toxic.

    “This has been a subject of discussion among ministers at the Five Eyes meetings and at the G7 meetings where ample discussion has been held on how we encourage the social media platforms to move quickly and efficiently to deal with toxic communications like this that incite violence and hatred and obviously do great damage to social cohesion,” Goodale said.

    Of course the problem with this statement is that one politician’s idea of “toxic communication” may go beyond ISIS recruitment videos and vile Nazi propaganda. What authoritarian politicians and ideologues deem “toxic” is often just an average person’s cultural content.

    After the horrific New Zealand terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch, media, activists and politicians acted in unison to blame cultural figures who had absolutely nothing to do with the massacre. A New Zealand bookstore even went so far as to ban Jordan Peterson’s self-help book. No one was spared from the misguided accusations. Not even Chelsea Clinton. And while all of this social panic is going on, journalists at major outlets are helping to spread it, (that is, when they’re not too busy writing pointless takedowns of their fellow journalists for being mean ten years ago). Seriously. What the hell are we doing? Where are our priorities?

    In a March 11, 2010 newspaper article in The Detroit News, Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) father accused her of lying “big-time to get elected” by falsifying her address on an election affidavit.

    Tlaib’s father, Harbi Elabed, made the accusations against Tlaib, who at the time was a freshman state-level representative from the 12th District in Detroit’s Southwest side. The newspaper article was scrubbed from the internet when The Detroit News migrated to a new website but was available in a subscription-based digital archive. The Detroit News reported:

    He said his daughter misrepresented her residency when she signed an election affidavit in 2008 with the Wayne County Clerk claiming she was a citizen of Detroit.

    According to that affidavit, Tlaib claimed she lived at 9123 Rathbone in Detroit. That house is owned in part by her father, Harbi Elabed, and he now says she did not live there and he was only recently made aware that she had claimed so.
