In a subsequent statement, Copenhagen Police announced a ban on Paludan’s demonstrations in parts of the city until 23 April. The ban would be continually reviewed and lifted “as soon as there is no longer a risk to public order”, the police said in a statement.
Later, a 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of firearms possession, placing the hand grenade, and writing “Death to Paludan”, the Berlingske newspaper reported.
Meanwhile, Copenhagen Police deployed extra patrol officers in Nørrebro following the recent days’ unrest. Part of the action involves informing young people in the area about Danish legislation and the freedom of expression.

“It is our estimation that an extraordinary crime situation has taken form in several areas of Copenhagen’s police sectors — one that generates insecurity for residents and others moving about in the affected areas”, Skov said.
The decision to stop demonstrations by Stram Kurs was met with mixed reactions from Danish politicians. While some supported the ban, others saw an encroachment on the freedom of speech.
“You can’t forbid Paludan to demonstrate in the long run. The thing is that you need is a good reason for rejecting a demonstration”, Peter Kofod of the Danish People’s Party said, arguing that freedom of speech has been under pressure in recent days.
“I think it’s a disgrace that attitudes that you don’t like are met with violence instead of counter-arguments. Freedom of speech also includes attitudes that most people disagree with”, Christina Egelund of the Liberal Alliance said.
Stram Kurs is a fringe party that identifies as “ethno-nationalist utilitarians”, “libertarians” and “Danish patriots”. Despite only being founded in 2017 and having only a limited membership, the party repeatedly makes headlines in Denmark with its protests, which involve symbolic Quran-burnings made possible after the repealing of Denmark’s centuries-old blasphemy law.”

Acting on recommendations given by the Special Committee for Judicial Reforms, which highlighted that many rape victims are hesitant and coy to give testimony before male magistrates, the apex court issued a circular signed by Supreme Court Registrar Dr. Mohammad Zakir Hossain instructing all chief judicial magistrates and chief metropolitan magistrates across Bangladesh to assign female magistrates to such cases.
According to a media report in the Dhaka Tribune, Dr. Hossain explained that there was a provision in the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 to record the statements of such victims.
The circular also read that in the absence of a female magistrate, a “second best” alternative should be assigned.
Between 13,000 and 18,000 women and children were raped or subject to molestation in Bangladesh per year from 2001-2018, according to estimates.”

“A man has been killed after a car was driven into a mass brawl outside a north-west London tube station, sparking the 36th murder probe in the capital this year.

During the melee, a car hit two men, aged 27 and 21, who were taken to hospital for treatment.
The 27-year-old’s injuries were not initially thought to be life-threatening, however his condition deteriorated and he died last night.
The 21-year-old was discharged yesterday, Metropolitan Police added.
CCTV from a nearby shop appears to show a masked victim of the attack hobbling and trying to enter an off-licence shortly after the incident.
Scotland Yard said officers were called to the scene on Ealing Road at 1.28am and nine people were arrested on suspicion of affray.
Six of them are now being held on suspicion of murder, while one of the men was being held on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.
Detectives appealed for anyone with information or any passing motorist with dashcam footage to contact them ‘as a matter of urgency’.
In a statement, Metropolitan Police said: ‘The two men were taken to hospital, the 21-year-old man was later discharged.

“Children as young as nine are talking about suicide in class, a teachers’ survey has revealed as they warn that mental health issues are on the rise.
Four in five teachers said they have seen a rise in pupils experiencing mental health problems, according to a poll conducted by the National Education Union (NEU).
The survey of over 8,674 teachers and support staff found that 83 per cent saw a rise in the past two years. “Sats pressure and general expectations are taking their toll on more vulnerable pupils,” one teacher commented, adding: “We have nine-year-olds talking about suicide.”
Another said she had seen “much more anxiety” and self-harming among pupils, adding that there have been “three suicides in three years in my school alone.”
Some of those questioned said student mental health was at a “crisis point”, with others saying it was affecting “younger and younger children”.
The staff were also asked whether their workplace had the provision for supporting pupils with mental health issues.
Just under half (49 per cent) said they had a school counsellor, but the majority of teachers (59 per cent) said they had learning support assistants. 29 per cent reported having a school nurse, and 12 per cent said they had a mental health first aider.
Rosamund McNeil, the NEU’s assistant general secretary, said: “We are hearing from teachers and headteachers that social media is one of the triggers that is leading them to worry about mental health.
“Social media is part of the picture and young people being on screens for more of the time. At home children can be on screens quite a great deal, it means people don’t have a break from peer relations and bullying can be a factor.”
Ms McNeil said that over the past three to five years, spending time online has become a “significant feature” in children’s lives.
Asked what prevents them from fully supporting pupils with mental health issues, the most common reasons cited by teachers were workload and difficulties accessing support such as Educational Psychologists.
57 per cent of teachers blamed funding cuts, while 32 per cent said the “narrowing of the curriculum” was also a factor.
Research published last month suggests that more than one in 10 boys at primary school are being labelled as suffering from a mental disorder, amid growing concerns about their classroom behaviour.
An NHS report, which examines the factors which may increase the risk of mental illness, found young boys were twice as likely as girls the same age to suffer such problems.
Experts said that “difficult” behaviour in young children could be a sign of emotional distress that they struggled to talk about. Compulsory health education lessons, due to be introduced next year, will encourage children to limit their time on Facebook, smartphones and games consoles and spend more time outdoors with friends.
A Department for Education spokesperson said: “Mental health is just as important as physical health and should be treated as such.
“Through our new compulsory health education all children will be taught how to look after their mental wellbeing and recognise when classmates are struggling.””

Saudi sisters plead for help from Georgia after running away from parents (telegraph, Apr 17, 2019)

“Two Saudi sisters appealed for help on Wednesday from the former Soviet republic of Georgia after fleeing their country, in the latest case of runaways from the ultra-conservative kingdom using social media to seek asylum.
Using a newly created Twitter account called “GeorgiaSisters”, they identified themselves as Maha al-Subaie, 28, and Wafa al-Subaie, 25.
Like other Saudi women who have fled and turned to social media, they posted copies of their passports to establish their identities.
The sisters claim they are in danger and will be killed if they are forcibly returned to Saudi Arabia.
They said their father and brothers have arrived in Georgia looking for them.
Wafa said they fled “oppression from our family”, without elaborating. Saudis can enter Georgia visa-free, making the country a transit point for numerous other Saudi women who have fled in recent years.
Saudi women who run away are almost always fleeing abusive male relatives and claim there are few good choices for them to report the abuse in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi women caught running away in the kingdom can be forced into restrictive shelters, pressured to reconcile with their abusers or detained on charges of disobedience.
Regardless of their age, women in Saudi Arabia must have the consent of a male relative to obtain a passport, travel or marry under so-called male guardianship laws.
The sisters’ first post to the Twitter account was Tuesday evening. It read: “We are two Saudi sisters who fled from Saudi Arabia seeking asylum.
“Yet, the family and the Saudi government have suspended our passports and now we are trapped in Georgia country. We need your help please.”
In another post, the sisters appear with their faces showing and their hair uncovered – a taboo for conservative families in Saudi Arabia.
The post says they are showing their faces in order for the world to “remember us” in case something happens to them.
In a later video posted on Twitter, Maha said: “We want your protection. We want a country that welcomes us and protects our rights.”
Her sister posted another video calling for help from the UN refugee agency.
“We fled oppression from our family because the laws in Saudi Arabia (are) too weak to protect us. We are seeking the UNHCR protection in order to be taken to a safe country,” Wafa said. The sisters did not give further details on why they have fled.
The Associated Press could not immediately reach the sisters in Georgia. A Saudi activist who goes by the name Ms Saffaa told the AP that she and other activists have had direct contact with the sisters in Georgia…”

Liberal Feminist Mother Warns Transgender Activists Are Taking Control of Mental Health Profession (breitbart, Apr 16, 2019)

“A liberal feminist mother of a gender-dysphoric teen warns parents that transgender activists are ensuring it will soon be “nearly impossible” to find a mental health professional who is willing to help these children evaluate their self-perceptions.
“I quickly discovered that it is nearly impossible to find therapists who do this kind of work,” wrote the anonymous mother in a piece that appeared at the Federalist Tuesday. “If a girl presents as transgender today, the vast majority of therapists will immediately affirm the girl’s declared gender identity and ask her what steps she would like to take toward transition.”
Currently, transgender activists are celebrating their success in pressing lawmakers in 16 states and the District of Columbia to ban what they call “conversion therapy.” These political supporters of gender ideology claim therapists who do not immediately affirm the perception of young people claiming to be a gender that is incompatible with their biological sex are “harmful” and “abusive” and must be outlawed.
As the anonymous Federalist writer discovered, most mental health professionals from the states in which “conversion therapy” is now banned will not be willing to help a child explore his or her feelings or perceptions about sexual identity.
The mother wrote:
I interviewed at least a dozen therapists in search of one who could help my daughter examine her feelings and motivations. I finally resorted to paying out-of-pocket for my daughter to talk online to a therapist who lives in another state. I know I am not alone. I belong to an online support group of nearly 1,500 parents of gender dysphoric youth. Finding therapists who provide standard mental health therapy rather than automatic affirmation is a frustration for most of us.
Mental health professionals who work with children in states in which the transgender activists have successfully banned traditional therapy with children would be risking their licenses and their livelihood if they took on such cases.
“The goal of anti-conversion therapy bills is to ban mental health therapists from using conversion therapy with minors,” the mother wrote. “I am afraid these bills will have a chilling effect on therapists’ ability to help girls who say they are transgender.”
At a recent Heritage Foundation panel, Walt Heyer, founder of Sex Change Regret, said his organization receives many letters from parents, and those who have begun transitioning to the opposite sex themselves, seeking help.
Heyer, as the Christian Post reported, lived as a transgender woman for eight years and underwent surgery in 1983. In his discussion, he labeled what transgender activists are doing to young people today – controlling mental health therapy and pushing hormonal treatments and surgical interventions – as “abuse.”
“That is child abuse,” Heyer said. “We need to be calling it what it is. It’s not affirming a child. It’s causing them to be depressed and anxious about who they are.”
“The only reason I am able to speak to you today is because after 46 years dealing with this issue, I was able to de-transition in 1990 after I had psychotherapy, the very same psychotherapy [transgender activists] are trying to prevent people from having,” he explained. “Why? Because they don’t want them to de-transition.”
The Federalist author also asked:
Why are transactivists so determined to prevent youth from receiving therapy that in any other context would be considered good and ethical practice? I think it is because transactivists believe they should be exempt from the rules the rest of us follow when we seek medical care.
“What the general public does not understand is that standard mental health therapy is now considered conversion therapy when practiced with gender-dysphoric youth,” the mother asserted.
Heyer said the current situation amounts to: “We are manufacturing transgender kids.”

Satellite images may show reprocessing activity at North Korea nuclear site -U.S. researchers
WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) – Satellite images from last week show movement at North Korea’s main nuclear site that could be associated with the reprocessing of radioactive material into bomb fuel, a U.S. think tank said on Tuesday.
Any new reprocessing activity would underscore the failure of a second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi in late February to make progress toward North Korea’s denuclearization.
Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a report that satellite imagery of North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear site from April 12 showed five specialized railcars near its Uranium Enrichment Facility and Radiochemistry Laboratory.
It said their movement could indicate the transfer of radioactive material.
“In the past, these specialized railcars appear to have been associated with the movement of radioactive material or reprocessing campaigns.” the report said. “The current activity, along with their configurations, does not rule out their possible involvement in such activity, either before or after a reprocessing campaign.”

Mexico works to deter new migrant caravan heading north to U.S. border

Authorities are blocking U.S. bound migrants from entering a Southern Mexican city. The Central American caravan moved through the southern state of Chiapas Tuesday before they were stopped in the town of Huixtla.
Although many are held outside the town waiting to gain access, reports haave suggested the process is slow.

The municipality declared an emergency earlier this week as people continue to pour into the town. Officials clamed the majority of the caravan did not come peacefully, and urged business owners to close their shops and advised townspeople to remain indoors.
Huixtla officials attempted to block the upcoming surge from entering, and even offered shelters further away. However, some managed to push past the police to take shelter in the town center. 5,000 migrants are still making their way to Huixtla by walking along highways.

It’s been just a little over a day since the world shared the horror of watching the Cathedral of Notre Dame burn, of seeing its great spire snap off at the base and plunge into the inferno below. During that period, any theorizing that the fire was caused by arson or terrorists has been laid to rest. What is left is the monumental task of rebuilding the grand structure, toward which end donations have already begun flooding in.
For me as a sometime student of art, the question of attempting to recreate what was lost is a troublesome one. For one thing, the great cathedral was not the end-product of a single creative effort. It was begun in the Middle Ages but modified in the centuries that followed. It was not until the fourteenth century, for example, that the signature flying buttresses were added, and since then other original structures have been replaced. As J.E. Dyer reminds us in a piece contextualizing the fire with Holy Week, the spire was rebuilt by Napoleon III after his declaration of a new empire in the mid-nineteenth century.
For another, the task of restoring the church to its former glory is not merely difficult but in some cases impossible. Happily, the magnificent stained-glass rose windows survived the blaze, but not so the intricate network of hand-carved wooden beams that crisscrossed the vaulted ceiling. Using modern technology to recreate their likeness is an unfortunate step toward transforming Notre Dame into a ship of Theseus.

Regardless of whatever historic architectural mélange Notre Dame represented, the cathedral was still one of the most beautiful manmade structures ever produced in all of human history.
Imagine an illiterate medieval peasant staring up at the Twin Towers. Then project a continuous loop of Kubrick’s 2001 with a pit orchestra playing Fanfare for the Common Man.
That’s the sort of impact entering Notre Dame had upon people for most of its history. With brilliantly chromatic sunlit clerestory windows ablaze with luminescent color and the Rose Window gazing down like some munificent Cyclops, unlettered minds of that time could not have but helped feel that they were in the presence of a deity.
Now for the bad news. Build bonfires against the length of a brick wall and see what happens. Yes, a few bricks might crack or explode from residual water content volatilizing. One could even use those kiln-dried clay blocks another time.
Regardless, its mortar would be fried out like flyash and it would be a miracle if the wall had even 80% of its original strength.
So it is with Notre Dame. Even if all of the stonework is unscathed (and rest assured that many pieces of the masonry are mechanically compromised due to thermal stress) its structural integrity and, especially, seismic stability may be permanently compromised.
Consider this: A majority of the building’s overall mass was raised in temperature like a preheated oven. Without consulting an investigator’s findings, it’s still more than likely that the interior fire created a thermal pulse that soaked into a huge portion of the structure. It can only be hoped that the cathedral’s magnificent size (i.e., contained volume)—combined with rising heat convection from the rooftop—helped cushion the blow. However, with almost its entire roof ablaze, the conflagration’s radiance may have been spread too widely throughout the entire structure (largely starting from the interior).
A term like ‘cushion the blow’ is eerily appropriate in how the blast of heat literally landed like mechanical shock to almost the entire structure. Some simple thermodynamics will explain.
NOTE: — Most people without a background in physics commonly presume that only direct contact with flames cause significant elevations in temperatures. While true to an extent, just like with stars, the bulk of emitted energy is in the form of invisible infrared light that needs no intimate mechanical contact to be transmitted. In effect, the entire cathedral was filled with insanely hot water and allowed to bathe in (i.e., absorb that) heat like a thick-walled coffee mug.
TCE or Thermal Coefficient of Expansion dictates that all bodies expand and contract in proportion to ambient temperature. Hot beverage mugs typically are a single piece, fired ceramic mass that easily withstands a millimeter of evenly distributed dimensional shift. By comparison, Notre Dame may as well have been made of Lego®. —
Another potential reprieve comes from the use of rubble and external casing methods which saved on expensive solid stonework when constructing fill walls or other quasi-structural elements. It is possible that these components could undergo thermal cycling with, perhaps, less mechanical stress—even as this notion of flexibility disregards the more numerous bonding sites and failure points of those edifices.

The retired British spymaster also hosted, along with Halper, an event at Cambridge in 2014 attended by Michael Flynn, who served at the time as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Dearlove and Halper are reported to have expressed concerns about Flynn’s contacts at the event with Svetlana Lokhova, a Russia-born student at Cambridge. Satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo is set to stir controversy once more after depicting French President Emmanuel Macron mixed with Notre Dame cathedral on fire on its latest cover.
The cover image shows the French leader’s face with his hair styled as the facade of the iconic cathedral while on fire for its latest issue with the caption “Reforms” and Macron stating, “I will start with the bones,” Il Giornale reports.

The reference has a double meaning in that it follows comments made by the French president to rebuild the Notre Dame cathedral following the tragic fire on Monday evening that did enormous damage to the structure and destroyed the centuries-old roof.
It also refers to the ongoing issues Macron has faced from the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) movement which has protested every Saturday against his policies since the 17th of November and has demanded severe reforms, including the introduction of Citizen Initiated Referendums (RIC) to allow voters to enact and repeal laws.
The RIC issue has become a central focus of the Yellow Vest movement and some polls have shown it to have a broad appeal across France with a survey published in January revealing that 80 per cent of French supported the concept.
Macron has also promised reforms and has conducted a “Grand Debate” over the last several months, although polls show a majority of French are highly sceptical that his government will listen to their responses to it.
The cartoon is not the first time Charlie Hebdo has struck out against Macron.
In the first days of his presidential victory in 2017, the magazine published a cover of Macron and his much older wife Brigitte with the latter pregnant under the caption “He’s going to work miracles!”

Edouard Philippe said the competition would give the 850-year-old monument “a spire suited to the techniques and challenges of our time”. No estimation of the cost of rebuilding the cathedral, for which French billionaires, multinationals and private citizens have so far raised €880m (£763m) project, had yet been made, he said.
President Emmanuel Macron promised the nation on Tuesday night that Notre-Dame, a powerful symbol of France’s history and culture and the point from which the country’s road distances are measured, would be rebuilt – and be “more beautiful than before” – within five years, a timetable many experts consider impossible.
As the Paris prosecutor’s office said investigators looking into the causes of the fire have still not been able to look inside the cathedral, Notre-Dame’s rector, Bishop Patrick Chauvet, said he expected the building to remain closed to the public for five to six years. “A segment has been very weakened,” Chauvet said.

France will invite architects from around the world to submit their designs for rebuilding the Notre-Dame cathedral spire that toppled dramatically during a devastating blaze, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said Wednesday.
France will be looking for “a new spire that is adapted to the techniques and the challenges of our era”, Philippe told reporters, a day after President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the cathedral “even more beautifully” within five years.
Thousands of Parisians and tourists watched in horror Monday as flames engulfed a monument that has symbolised Paris for nearly a millennium, toppling the spire and gutting a large part of the roof.
No sooner had firefighters extinguished the flames than pledges of donations towards rebuilding it began to pour in. Within 24 hours, the pledges had reached more than €800 million ($900 million), with French business magnates and corporations jostling to outshine each other with displays of generosity.
Nearly $1 billion in total has been pledged so far.
But the slew of announcements raised eyebrows in France, with some leftist politicians arguing that the ultra-rich could best help protect the country’s cultural heritage by fully paying their taxes – or by helping the “human cathedral” of people in need.

Quebec: The controversial comments of a former Solidaire candidate on the fire that ravaged the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris put Quebec Solidaire in trouble on Tuesday.
The co-spokesperson of Quebec Solidaire (QS), Manon Massé, took care to distance herself from the party’s candidate in Mont-Royal-Outremont in the last election, Eve Torres, who is of Muslim faith.
Ms. Massé asked the latter to retract, believing that her remarks would only exacerbate the debate around Bill 21 on religious symbols.
In a confused message posted and removed from her Facebook page, Ms. Torres, who has already been among the political analysts invited to the show La Joute on the TVA network, suggested that the fire in Paris Monday was the result of a divine intervention related to the prohibition of religious symbols in France.
According to Ms. Torres, banning religious signs can stir up the wrath of “the imaginary friend.” And then “here is the result!,” she wrote.
“If I were (Quebec Premier François) Legault, I would have firefighters sleep in the church on Notre-Dame Street” in Montreal, she continued.
“I was very troubled” by the words of Ms. Torres, said Ms. Massé on the air, adding that if it was a joke she was “very bad taste.”
This type of intervention only contributes to “ruining the debate”, according to Ms. Massé.
A former QS candidate, Ms. Torres was also a member of the Québec Solidaire coordinating committee until recently.
Ms. Torres finally apologized, saying that her message was a joke.
Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette, who is piloting Bill 21, also denounced Ms. Torres.

One thing that jumped out at me, as I watched Notre Dame burn in real time on BBC and Sky News, was the statement of some reporter or commentator or architectural expert that the cathedral could and would be rebuilt, although perhaps the new structure would be “more modern” than the old one. Later that evening, in his speech to the nation, President Macron vowed: “We will make the Cathedral of Notre Dame even more beautiful.”
More modern? More beautiful? My alarm bells went off, and they weren’t fire alarms.

President Trump on Wednesday took aim at top officials at the FBI as well as Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), accusing them of conspiring to undermine his 2016 campaign and eventual presidency.
Trump tweeted that the dossier authored by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele on behalf of Fusion GPS, a political intelligence firm, and provided to the FBI by Steele had been a “total fraud on your President and the American people!”
“Wow! FBI made 11 payments to Fake Dossier’s discredited author, Trump hater Christopher Steele. … The Witch Hunt has been a total fraud on your President and the American people!” he wrote.
“It was brought to you by Dirty Cops, Crooked Hillary and the DNC,” Trump continued.
Trump and his allies have argued for years that the dossier authored by Steele on the president’s ties to Russia, which has not been fully verified, was the impetus for the FBI’s initial investigation of the Trump campaign begun under the Obama administration, which Trump has claimed led to illegal spying on his campaign.
The president’s reelection campaign echoed those claims over the weekend, falsely telling supporters in a fundraising email that Attorney General William Barr had revealed “unlawful” surveillance on the Trump campaign.
“Attorney General William Barr said what the president has thought all along: He believes ‘unlawful spying did occur’ against Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign,” read the fundraising email.
Barr told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing last week that he believes “spying” did occur on the Trump campaign, but made no determination as to whether it was conducted legally.
“I think spying did occur,” the attorney general said. “But the question is whether it was adequately predicated and I’m not suggesting it wasn’t adequately predicated, but I need to explore that.”
“I am not saying that improper surveillance occurred. I’m saying that I am concerned about it and looking into it. That’s all,” he added.

The assortment of knives recovered by police officers in Camden, Islington, Shoreditch, Enfield, Haringey and Charlton come as new statistics show the number of under-16s treated in hospital for stab wounds has nearly doubled in five years.
Doctors are battling to save three children a day on average as knife crime rates soar to the highest level since the Second World War.
The figures revealed:
– A total of 347 under-16s were taken to A&E with stab wounds last year, up from 180 in 2012-13
– The number of child knife killers has risen by 77 per cent in two years

ONTARIO – JEWISH MPP DELIVERS CALL-TO-ACTION ON ISLAMOPHOBIA
A Jewish member of the Ontario legislature has introduced a private member’s bill that would set aside a province-wide day to consider Islamophobia and its consequences.
Bill 83, “An Act to Proclaim a Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia,” passed second reading in Queen’s Park on April 4 and now heads to the standing committee on social policy.
Rima Berns-McGown, the NDP MPP for Beaches-East York and one of four known Jewish members of the provincial parliament, introduced the bill on March 19.
In an emotional 12-minute address in the legislature at second reading, Berns-McGown noted that on Jan. 29, 2017, a shooter walked into the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City shortly after the conclusion of evening prayers and murdered six worshippers, injuring 19 others.
She also referenced last month’s attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which 50 worshippers were murdered.
“It is no longer possible for anyone anywhere to deny the link between hate and violence and divisive, caustic political rhetoric,” Berns-McGown told a hushed legislature. “It is a link that, as human beings and as legislators, we cannot afford to deny any longer. It is time to act.”
She said that for too long, Canadians “have allowed hate to grow in this country. We have been slow to quash anti-immigrant bigotry. No one can deny any longer where that leads.”
The bill notes that Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Hamilton and other municipalities in Canada have designated Jan. 29 as a day of remembrance and action on Islamophobia. It calls for the day to be marked across the province.
“Hate kills,” Berns-McGown told legislators. “It kills in synagogues and churches and mosques and gurdwaras. It kills on the street and it kills in nightclubs. It kills whether it is called ‘anti-Semitism’ or ‘anti-black racism’ or ‘Islamophobia’ or ‘anti-Sikh racism’ or ‘misogyny’ or ‘homophobia,’ and we need to confront and eliminate all of it. All of it is odious, and all of it twists us into a society that we do not want to be.”
Berns-McGown was born in South Africa and came to Canada with her family when she was four years old. She said she had lost extended family in the Holocaust.
As a child in Montreal, she recounted, one of her family’s closest friends was a man named Steve Bleyer, a Hungarian who had survived Auschwitz.
“I can still see the tattoo on Steve’s arm. I remember being terrified of everything that tattoo represented, and unable to comprehend how anyone could put a child into a concentration camp simply because of who he was.”
Later, when Bleyer began teaching Holocaust education in schools, “he always said, ‘Never again for anyone’ – never again for himself and his community; never again for anyone. It is the only way to build a society that works for everyone who lives within it,” Berns-McGown said.
Several MPPs, including Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, spoke in favour of Berns-McGown’s bill.
Berns-McGown did not return messages from The CJN seeking further comment.
Moments after Berns-McGown presented her bill, fellow Jewish MPP Roman Baber (York Centre) introduced his own private member’s bill that would ban hate rallies from the grounds of Queen’s Park.
Baber cited figures from Statistics Canada last year, which showed that police-reported hate crimes targeting the Jewish community rose by 63 per cent over the year before, while hate crimes against Muslims were up by 151 per cent.
“Freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to engage in hate speech or incite violence,” Baber said.
As reported in The CJN, B’nai Brith Canada is opposing Baber’s bill, saying that preventing hate rallies should go beyond the confines of Queen’s Park, which already has rules for dealing with such events.

Thousands more migrants are heading toward the U.S.-Mexican border, hoping to gain permanent residency here even as the Trump administration tightens rules on detention and obtaining political asylum.
Some 2,000 migrants arrived in Mexico this week, forcing officials of Chiapas state to declare an emergency. 5,000 more migrants had set out toward the U.S. on Monday, according to the Mexico News Daily.
Meanwhile, “Pueblos Sin Frontreras,” a group often cited as being behind the caravans since last year, denied on its Facebook page in a post on Tuesday that it is organizing the large groups and leading them on the long journey to the U.S. border from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Immigration judges cannot release migrants who are caught sneaking into the United States, even if the migrants ask for asylum, says a binding legal decision by Attorney General William Barr.
The decision will dramatically shift the migration-caused civic and housing crises from the nation’s blue-collar communities over to the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security, whose budget and detention centers only have enough resources to house about 50,000 people year-round.
“The [text of the relevant] Act provides that, if an alien in expedited proceedings establishes a credible fear, he “shall be detained for further consideration of the application for asylum,” says Barr’s April 16 decision, titled. Matter of M-S-. Because of the law, “I order that, unless DHS paroles the respondent under section 212(d)(5)(A) of the Act, he must be detained until his removal proceedings conclude.”
“This is a HUGE ruling that will harm thousands seeking protection from persecution at the US border since far more will be held in detention even after passing the threshold screening under the credible fear standard,” complained Greg Chen, director of government relations at the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot is clarifying his new policy not to prosecute theft of what he called “necessary items” under $750.
Creuzot told WBAP’s ‘Rick Roberts Show’ Tuesday that the policy only applies to people stealing to survive, not someone who plans to re-sell stolen items.
“If the individual is committing the crime because they are poor or they are hungry then we are going to exercise our prosecutorial discretion not to prosecute that case,” Creuzot said.
