What Rule Of Law?

In the heady early days of independence in Zimbabwe, when Robert Mugabe was the world’s most loved freedom fighter and euphoria abounded within and without the country it seemed a peaceful and prosperous future for the newly emancipated citizenry was all but assured.
Then in August 1980 there was a rude reminder that paradise was not quite at hand. After a lunch with the then Prime Minister Mugabe and Mozambique’s visiting President Samora Machel, Edgar Tekere, then a cabinet minister and Mugabe loyalist, decided he was going to “fight a battle”. With seven associates, he left the capital (reportedly pissed) to continue the fight and murdered an innocent white farmer at his home in the Arcturus agricultural district.
At the trial, the presiding judge, Justice John Pitman was overruled by two assessors (one of mixed race and the other black) in a highly politicised trial which resulted in the acquittal of Tekere and his accomplices. I remember this verdict coming as a big blow to my morale; I feared this was a sign of more to come and sadly I was right. Soon it became clear that the law would be selectively applied and whites would be judged differently from their black countrymen. It also became clear that the law, henceforth would be weaponised and used as a powerful tool to suppress and punish the political opposition in a long running campaign that continues today and straddles the racial divide.
South Africa is applying Zimbabwe’s gold standard. A recent outburst by the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema was referred by the FW De Klerk Foundation to the South African Human Rights Commission. Malema does not deny saying, “We are not calling for the slaughtering of white people, at least for now. What we are calling for is the peaceful occupation of land and we don’t owe anyone an apology for that.” The implied threat is that white people can avoid an untimely and almost certainly, violent departure from this life if they don’t resist the confiscation of their worldly possessions.
But the protectors of our human rights were unmoved. Citing a Constitutional Court ruling the Commission was “.. of the view that certain words or expression will depend on whether [they are] uttered by a white person or a black person and against a white person or a black person. In accordance to the ConCourt jurisprudence, the identity of the offender and target group as belonging to a vulnerable group will have an impact in determining hate speech and robust speech must be protected so that marginalised persons can convey anger and frustration at the systems of social injustice.”
In a nutshell, what we now know, is that black people can threaten to kill white people and escape sanction and we must now accept that hate-speech is only credible and punishable if it emanates from a person of European ancestry because those with African roots are legally incapable of being ‘hateful’ within the letter of the law. As proof that Africans are incapable of real ‘hatred’ the Commissioners might have mentioned the enormous compassion shown by Chaka to all those blessed people who happened to reside in his dominions when he was on the top of his game. Or the kindness shown to the Tutsis by the Hutus when not slaughtering almost a million of them.
It is of little consolation to us, but selective application of the law is not unique to Africa. In 1998 President Bill Clinton, although clearly guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice, was cleared of the charges, simply because the Democratic Party closed ranks in deciding to discard the rule of law and protect their president. The Clinton family appears to enjoy immunity from prosecution to the present day. More recently, Jussie Smollett, despite having falsely reported to police that he was brutally assaulted by white Trump supporters, has had all charges against him dropped in what appears to be a racially motivated decision that sends a strong signal that the law will be applied differently, depending on the colour of the perpetrator.
The situation in the United Kingdom is no better. We now know, that the vile behaviour of people like Jimmy Savile and Liberal MP Cyril Smith was well know to the law enforcement agencies but they, for political and other reasons that are not entirely clear, decided not to do their duty. In Rotherham, the police were aware that hundreds of girls, some underage, were being brutally sexually abused by Pakistani ‘grooming’ gangs and they did nothing for fear of being accused of racism. At the same time the UK police are deployed in large numbers to monitor social media and pounce immediately upon anyone who may be showing signs of being anti-Muslim.
In South Africa we are constantly reminded we have the ‘best constitution in the world’. Americans like to tell us theirs is the greatest democracy in the world and the British pride themselves in being one of the freest counties in the world. There may be some truth in all the above, but the fact is constitutions and statute books are only as effective as the people charged with interpreting and enforcing them. Looking at the calibre of the guardians of our constitution I am filled with fear. M…So am I.

The Turkish forces are involved in raids against the PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Ankara, across the country and in northern Iraq since the early 1980s. In 2013, the PKK and Ankara signed a ceasefire agreement; however, it collapsed just two years later over a number of terror attacks allegedly committed by the PKK militants.
Turkish security forces regularly carry out anti-PKK raids across the country, conducting airstrikes against the group in northern Iraq as well.
According to Turkish authorities, over 10,000 PKK members have died in the fighting since 2015.”
Turkey: Erdogan says he will ‘solve this Syria issue on the ground’
Turkey will ‘solve this Syria issue’ as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s first order of business after Sunday’s local elections, he said during a rally in Istanbul on Saturday.
“Terror organisations will never show up, neither in the mountains nor in the cities of this country,” he said, in front of a crowd of supporters of his AK Party. “The first thing we will do after the elections will be to solve this Syria issue, not at the table but on the ground. We won’t stop.”
So far, Turkey’s military operations in Syria have focused on Kurdish groups in the north of the country.

She spoke a few days after UK Prime Minister Theresa May promised to step down if the House of Commons approves her Brexit deal – something that never took place on March 29 during the MPs’ vote.
The development came amid reports about May being replaced with Gove in case of her possible resignation.
As for Gove’s views related to UK Muslims, he focused on the issue in his book titled Celsius 7/7 and written after the deadly 2005 London tube and bus bombings. In the book, Gove specifically claimed that “a sizeable minority” of the UK’s 1.8 million Muslims adhere to “rejectionist Islamist views”.
He referred to a 2006 poll which revealed 46 per cent of British Muslims considering themselves Muslim first and British second and 12 per cent of these respondents aged between 18 and 24 arguing that suicide bombing could be justified in the UK.
Gove noted at the time that these views “reflect the influence of organised work by those sympathetic to an Islamist agenda in the UK”.
Critics, in turn, pointed to other polling evidence which reflected British Muslims’ overwhelming hostility of British Muslims to the the 7 July 2005 London bombings, often referred to as 7/7, which killed at least 52 people and injured 700 more.”

IS overran large parts of Iraq in 2014 after Iraqi forces collapsed, and it proceeded to declare a self-styled caliphate over territory straddling Iraq and Syria.
U.S. forces, which had left Iraq in 2011 after invading in 2003, were invited back in 2014 to assist the fight against the group. Iraq declared victory over IS in late 2017 after a ruinous and bloody war.
“They are here for the specific mission of empowering and enabling Iraqi forces in the fight against ISIS. Nothing else. That is the specific exclusive mission, and in that context, I do not see serious opposition to the presence of these forces in Iraq today,” Salih said.
Salih’s comments stand in stark contrast with that of mostly Iran-backed deputies in the Iraqi Parliament, who say they are preparing draft laws calling for a full withdrawal of U.S. troops now that the war against IS is over…”

The dpa news agency reported the suspects were taken into custody on Friday and Saturday in the towns of Essen, Duesseldorf, Wuppertal, Moenchengladbach, Duisburg and Ulm, citing a spokesman for prosecutors in Duesseldorf.
The prosecutors’ spokesman was quoted as saying Saturday that the group was suspected of having ties to Islamic State militants, either as sympathizers or a splinter group, and of planning a “serious act of violent subversion,” although there was no indication of a specific target.
The prosecutor’s office said the suspects were ordered released but the investigation would continue.
Officials said one suspect was from Tajikistan but provided no information about the nationalities of the others. Officials originally said 10 suspects but later updated it to 11.”
Andrew McCarthy: How long has Mueller known there was no Trump-Russia collusion?
Almost from the start, Democrats and their media echo chamber have moved the goal posts on collusion. The original allegation – the political narrative that the Clinton campaign, through Obama administration alchemy, honed into a counterintelligence investigation – was that that the Trump campaign was complicit in Russia’s “cyberespionage” attacks on the 2016 election.
But there was no evidence that candidate Trump and his surrogates had anything to do with the Kremlin’s hacking and propaganda schemes. And no supporting logic. The Russians are very good at espionage. They neither needed nor wanted American help, their operations predated Trump’s entry into the campaign, and some of those operations were anti-Trump.
Nevertheless, in short order, that endlessly elastic word, collusion, was being stretched to the breaking point – covering every conceivable type of association between Trump associates and Russia.
Some of these were unseemly, such as the Trump Tower meeting, an apparently unsuccessful effort to obtain campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton. More of them were routine, such as incoming national-security adviser Michael Flynn’s communications with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the post-election transition. But none of these collusion episodes were criminal. The only “collusion” prosecutors care about is conspiracy; a criminal agreement to violate a federal penal statute – such as the laws against hacking.
There was never any such evidence. There was just unverified, sensational, hearsay nonsense – the Steele dossier generated by the Clinton campaign.
Now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has concluded that there was no criminal collusion, the question arises: When during their exhaustive 22-month investigation did prosecutors realize they had no case?
I put it at no later than the end of 2017. I suspect it was in the early autumn.
By the time Mueller was appointed on May 17, 2017, the FBI had been trying unsuccessfully for nearly a year to corroborate the dossier’s allegations. Top bureau officials have conceded to congressional investigators that they were never able to do so – notwithstanding that, by the time of Mueller’s appointment, the Justice Department and FBI had relied on the dossier three times, in what they labeled “VERIFIED” applications, to obtain warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
And make no mistake about what this means. In each and every application, after describing the hacking operations carried out by Russian operatives, the Justice Department asserted:
The FBI believes that the Russian Government’s efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election were being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with [Donald Trump’s] campaign.
Yes, the Justice Department continued to make that allegation to the secret federal court for months after Trump was sworn in as president.
Notably, in June 2017, about a month after Mueller took over the investigation, while he was still getting his bearings, the Justice Department and the FBI went on to obtain a fourth FISA warrant. Yet again, they used the same unverified information. Yet again, they withheld from the court the fact that this information was generated by the Clinton campaign; that the Clinton campaign was peddling it to the media at the same time the FBI was providing it to the court; and that Christopher Steele, the informant on whom they were so heavily relying, had misled the bureau about his media contacts.
You know what’s most telling about this fourth FISA warrant? The fact that it was never renewed. The 90-day authorization lapsed in September 2017. When it did, Mueller did not seek to extend it with a new warrant.
Think about that for a moment. President Trump fired FBI Director Comey on May 9, 2017. Eight days later, on May 17, Mueller was named special counsel. This appointment effectively wrested control of the Trump-Russia counterintelligence investigation from acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, transferring it to the special counsel.
By August 2017, Mueller had removed the lead investigator, Agent Peter Strzok over the rabidly anti-Trump texts he’d exchanged with Lisa Page, a top FBI lawyer who served as McCabe’s counsel. Page herself had resigned in May. Meanwhile, the FBI reassigned its top counsel, James Baker (who later resigned); and the bureau’s inspection division referred McCabe to the Justice Department’s inspector general for leaking investigative information and then lying about it (and McCabe was later fired and referred to the Justice Department for possible prosecution).
This means that by autumn 2017 when it would have been time to go back to the court and reaffirm the dossier’s allegations of a Trump-Russia espionage conspiracy, the major FBI officials involved in placing those unverified allegations before the court had been sidelined. Clearly up to speed after four months of running the investigation, Mueller decided not to renew these allegations.
Once the fourth warrant lapsed in September, investigators made no new claims of a Trump-Russia conspiracy to the court. The collusion case was the Clinton campaign’s Steele dossier, and by autumn 2017, the investigators now in charge of the Trump-Russia investigation were unwilling to stand behind it.
In order to get the FISA warrants, the Justice Department and the FBI had had to allege that there was probable cause to believe former Trump adviser Carter Page was an agent of Russia. Pope Francis and Moroccan King Mohammed VI launched a joint appeal Saturday, urging the protection of the status quo of Jerusalem as the common patrimony of “the followers of the three monotheistic religions.”
The appeal was released in the midst of the pope’s two-day visit to Morocco and asserts the two leaders’ concern for “the unique and sacred character of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif” as well as “its spiritual significance and its special vocation as a city of peace.”
“We consider it important to preserve the Holy City of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif as the common patrimony of humanity,” the appeal states, “and especially the followers of the three monotheistic religions, as a place of encounter and as a symbol of peaceful coexistence, where mutual respect and dialogue can be cultivated.”
In late 2017, Pope Francis issued a similar appeal calling for respect for the “status quo” in Jerusalem following the news that the United States would transfer its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the Holy City.
“My thoughts now turn to Jerusalem,” the pope said. “I cannot remain silent about my deep concern for the situation that has been created in the last days.”
“At the same time, I would like to make a heartfelt appeal for everyone’s commitment to respect the city’s status quo, in conformity with the pertinent United Nations Resolutions,” he said.
“Jerusalem is a unique city, sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, who venerate the Holy Sites of their respective religions there, and it has a special vocation to peace,” the pope added.
Last November, the pope met with the president of Israel in the Vatican to discuss Israeli-Palestinian relations as well as the “Jerusalem question.”
According to a Vatican press release, the two leaders discussed the resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians “so as to reach an accord respecting the legitimate aspirations of both peoples” as well as “the Jerusalem question,” in its religious and human dimension for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
The Jerusalem question entails “the importance of safeguarding its identity and vocation as City of Peace,” the communiqué stated.
In their joint appeal Saturday, the pope and the Moroccan president called for the protection and promotion of “the specific multi-religious character, the spiritual dimension and the particular cultural identity of Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif.”
“It is our hope, therefore, that in the Holy City, full freedom of access to the followers of the three monotheistic religions and their right to worship will be guaranteed, so that in Jerusalem / Al-Quds Acharif they may raise their prayers to God, the Creator of all, for a future of peace and fraternity on the earth,” they said.

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Pope Francis praised Morocco as a model of religious moderation and migrant welcome as he kicked off a trip to the kingdom Saturday, warning that walls and fear-mongering won’t stop people from exercising their legitimate right to seek a better life elsewhere.
King Mohamed VI welcomed Francis as he arrived during an unusual rainstorm and began a 27-hour visit aimed at boosting Christian-Muslim ties and showing solidarity with Morocco’s ever-growing migrant community.
Morocco last year became the main destination for sub-Saharan African migrants seeking to reach Europe via Spain. The influx has strained the kingdom’s resources and fueled anti-migrant sentiment in Spain ahead of its April 28 general election.
After an airport greeting, the two leaders then took separate vehicles — Francis in his popemobile and the king in a convertible Mercedes — and paraded in tandem into town for a formal welcome ceremony at the complex where two of Morocco’s past monarchs are buried. Women ululated as Francis and the king walked along the promenade of the Hassan Tower complex under umbrellas.
Francis told the king that he hoped Morocco would continue to be a model of humanity, welcome and protection for migrants.
“The issue of migration will never be resolved by raising barriers, fomenting fear of others or denying assistance to those who legitimately aspire to a better life for themselves and their families,” Francis said.
Rather, he called for a change of attitude toward migrants that respects them as people, worthy of dignity and rights, and not just statistics. He said world leaders must address the economic imbalances and unrest on Earth that fuel conflicts and migration flows.
“Today’s grave migration crisis represents an urgent summons for concrete actions aimed at eliminating the causes that force many people to leave country and family behind, often only to find themselves marginalized and rejected,” he said.
It’s a message that Francis is expected to repeat later in the day when he meets migrants at a center run by the Catholic Church’s Caritas charity. Francis has made the plight of refugees a hallmark of his papacy, and has used many of his foreign visits to insist on the need to welcome them, protect them and integrate them into society.
Spain became the leading migrant entry route into Europe last year with over 57,000 unauthorized arrivals, according to the European Union. Morocco became the main departure point for migrants in smugglers’ unseaworthy boats after Italy essentially closed its borders to migrants leaving Libya.
Around 2,300 people died crossing the Mediterranean Sea last year and over 300 have already died this year on the dangerous journey, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Francis opened his remarks to the king by praising Morocco’s tradition of interfaith coexistence and its efforts to promote a moderate form of Islam.
Morocco, a Sunni Muslim kingdom of 36 million, reformed its religious policies and education to limit the spread of fundamentalism in 2004, following terrorist bombings in Casablanca in 2003 that killed 43 people.
Key to that effort has been the Mohammed VI Institute, a school of learning for imams that teaches a moderate Islam and exports it via preachers to Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Francis was visiting the institute later Saturday.
Francis praised the school, saying it “seeks to provide effective and sound training to combat all forms of extremism, which so often lead to violence and terrorism, and which in any event, constitute an offense against religion and against God himself.”
The king said education was the key to fighting radicalism — not military crackdowns.
“What all terrorists have in common is not religion, but rather ignorance of religion,” he said.
The trip follows Francis’ February visit to the United Arab Emirates, where the pope and the imam of Cairo’s Al Azhar, the seat of Sunni learning, signed a landmark joint statement establishing the relationship between Catholics and Muslims as brothers, with a common mission to promote peace.
The “Human Fraternity” document outlines a shared set of values and principles common to Christians and Muslims, focusing on the dignity of every person and a rejection of violence committed in God’s name.
Muslims, Christians and Jews have long lived peacefully in Morocco, even though Catholics are a tiny minority of about 23,000.
Francis will minister to them on Sunday when he celebrates Mass in Rabat’s sports stadium, before returning to Rome.

The Second Amendment is all about self defense, defense against criminals and defense against the government when, not if but when it turns oppressive.
Limiting the amount of ammo in the magazine of a self defense weapons is in effect limiting the right of self defense. Spain: Chaos breaks out as Barcelona Antifa counter far-right Vox rally
Police clashed with Antifa protesters who had taken to Barcelona streets to counter a demo by far-right Vox party supporters on Saturday.
Antifa protesters removed security fences separating the far-right demo and its counter-rally, threw stones at the police and set dumpsters and wood on fire in the Catalan capital.
According to reports, seven people were arrested in the unrest and five suffered minor injuries.
Vox is against regional autonomy in Spain and sued both the Parliament of Catalonia and several individual pro-independence politicians following the Catalan independence declaration.

Abstract
In the wake of collective traumas and acts of terrorism, media bring real graphic images and videos to TV, computer, and smartphone screens.
Many people consume this coverage, but who they are and why they do so is poorly understood.
Using a mixed-methods design, we examined predictors of and motivations for viewing graphic media among individuals who watched a beheading video created by the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
A representative national sample of U.S. residents (N = 3,294) reported whether they viewed a video and why (or why not) via an anonymous survey administered during a 3-year longitudinal study.
Accounting for population weights, about 20% of the sample reported watching at least part of a beheading video, and about 5% reported watching an entire video.
Increased likelihood of watching a video was associated with demographics (male, unemployed, and Christian), frequency of typical TV watching, and both prior lifetime exposure to violence and fear of future terrorism.
Watching at least part of a beheading video was prospectively associated with fear of future negative events and global distress approximately 2 years after the beheading videos went viral.
The most common reasons respondents reported for watching a beheading video were information seeking and curiosity.
Results suggest attentional vigilance: Preexisting fear and history of violent victimization appear to draw individuals to graphic coverage of violence.

WaPo- Who watches ISIS beheading videos in the U.S.? Men, Christians and the fearful, say psychologists.
Roxane Cohen Silver began trying to understand how graphic images pollute the human psyche in the terror-struck days after the 9/11 attacks, when sights and sounds of the twin towers crumbling flooded newspapers, television and radio.
The latest work by the professor of psychological science at the University of California at Irvine arrives in the midst of a reckoning with another terrorist attack. The massacre on Friday of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, occurred halfway around the globe from Ground Zero, but on a whole other planet of opportunities to view extremist violence.
In 2001, the images of billowing smoke got their oxygen almost exclusively from legacy media. In 2019, the rat-a-tat of gunfire issuing from semiautomatic weapons — and footage of the bloodshed inflicted by the weaponry — became available live on Facebook and other social media platforms.
The grisly events in New Zealand, which reignited debate about the ethics of viewing terrorist propaganda and the responsibilities of technology companies to curtail its circulation, occurred soon after Silver’s newest paper appeared in the American Psychologist, the flagship journal of the American Psychological Association. Her results, published late last month, hold clues about what sort of people are drawn to these images of destruction, as well as the psychological toll the gruesome material may take.
The study, “Who Watches an ISIS Beheading — and Why, examines engagement with videos depicting the decapitation of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff. The videos, each several minutes in length, appeared on the Internet about three weeks apart in 2014.
They shocked the world, enlisting modern methods to achieve barbaric ends. But the paper is the first to quantify how many people actually watched this graphic content, who these people were and what their motivations were for doing so.
In a survey of more than 3,000 U.S. residents that began in 2013 and lasted for three years, Silver and her colleagues at UCI found that 20 percent had watched at least part of a beheading video, while 5 percent said they had watched an entire one.
Survey participants were more likely to say they had watched the beheading videos if they also said they were male, Christian or unemployed. Those who reported watching television more often were also more likely to view the videos. So, too, was fear of future terrorism associated with greater likelihood of watching. Prior mental health conditions were not significant factors, but a lifetime exposure to violence was.
Age mattered only slightly. Yet, contrary to the widespread belief that young people are more prone to perusing the dark corners of the Internet, Silver noted, the tendency to watch the videos actually increased with age. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Most likely to engage with graphic content, Silver has found, are those who are already afraid of what they think they might encounter. The content has its desired effect, the paper concludes, increasing distress and fear of future negative events.
When we subject ourselves to images, sounds and videos created and distributed by terrorists, said Silver, who is the paper’s senior author, “We’re doing terrorists’ job for them.”
Terrorists have long understood their own psychological effect, staging public executions to instill fear. Such elaborate planning isn’t required in the modern age, when social media has made every act potentially public.
Silver, for her part, has not watched the videos. Nor has she viewed the gunman’s footage from Christchurch, or read the 74-page manifesto that has been linked to him. “And if you have not, I would discourage you from seeking them out,” she said in an interview with The Washington Post.
Building on her work on the 9/11 attacks and the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, the paper contributes to research demonstrating the deleterious effect of graphic content on the mental health of those who consume it. The new paper reached the notable conclusion, said Sarah Redmond, the first author and a PhD candidate in psychological science at UCI, that “individuals who view these images may be at risk for the same psychological and physical distress symptoms usually seen in those directly exposed to trauma.”
The conclusions speak to individual motivations for viewing the ghastly online content, as well as its personals costs.
“It’s not merely the responsibility of social media organizations but also the responsibility of the consumer to be aware of the potential negative consequences of exposure to these kinds of images,” Silver said.
But the results are inseparable from the public debate over the burden borne by digital platforms, which have been criticized for acting too slowly to remove hateful material. On Friday, Reddit shut down a blow-by-blow discussion of the mosque shootings unfolding on a subreddit called “Watch People Die,” an online forum hosting videos of people suffering hideous deaths.
The power of these sites is enhanced by the fierce devotion of their users. A report released this week by members of the British Parliament said addiction to social media should be classified as a disease.
“It’s such a different picture,” Silver observed, recalling how network television largely abstained after 9/11 from showing victims falling to their deaths, and how some newspapers sought to erase the famous “Falling Man” photo after first running it in the days after the attacks. “Teams of editors, perhaps, came to the conclusion to exercise restraint. It seems that nobody is making those decisions in 2019, when people carry smartphones in their hands that can very rapidly upload images and videos.”
Underscoring the difficulty of regulating a space as vast as social media, Facebook on Monday said a video of the Christchurch gunman’s rampage had been viewed about 4,000 times before it was taken down. Not one of the roughly 200 users who tuned in to the live broadcast reported the material, according to the social networking giant.
As for why they watched in the first place, the study by the psychological scientists suggests possible reasons. While the data showed that fear of future terrorism was a significant factor, respondents — in accounting for their own motivations — said they were mainly on an information-gathering mission. The paper further argues that allusions to the graphic nature of the videos in the media, as well as still images published in print and online, may increase the curiosity of viewers.
By contrast, emotional factors were prominent in the decision to stop a video before its completion.
The researchers were not able to conclude that the material was so harmful as to impair a viewer’s capacity to function or complete day-to-day tasks. Nevertheless, Silver cheered the decision to shut out the images.
“I can say unequivocally that there is no psychological benefit to exposure to graphic images of horror,” she said.

The Indian Army retaliated effectively, he added.
A total of seven people, including three soldiers, have been killed in the district of Poonch since India carried out an air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Pakistan’s Balakot area on February 26.
Last Sunday, India was on high alert as it reportedly spotted a Pakistani drone along the Line of Control, amid heightened tensions between the warring nations over the Kashmir region.
It is the latest in a string of reports of Pakistani drones entering Indian airspace.
According to The Times of India, there have been more than 12 incidents with at least four of the machines being shot down.
Last week, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he fears India has been gripped by ”war hysteria” that threatens to unleash further hostilities in the run-up to its neighbour’s national elections.

Advocates of Iran’s nuclear deal are conspicuously ignoring the Iranian government’s nuclear activities, even though they jeopardize global security as much as Israel’s security. Advocates of Iran are also rushing to criticize the Trump administration in the United States for tightening its sanctions in response to Iran’s illegal defiance.
In a recent interview with Iran’s state-owned Channel 2 in the Persian language, Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, made it clear that the flimsy “nuclear deal” initiated by then US President Barack Obama has done nothing to stop Iran from making advances in its nuclear program.

White supremacism and Islamophobia are among “the gravest threats” facing the world, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland told the United Nations Thursday.
A white supremacist’s March 15 terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, which claimed the lives of 50 worshippers, was a painful reminder to Canadians of the deaths of six people in another terrorist attack on a Quebec City mosque two years ago, Freeland said before a UN Security Council debate on terrorism.
“Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, ‘incels,’ nativists and radical anti-globalists who resort to violent acts are a threat to the stability of my country and countries around the world,” Freeland said.
No time for euphemisms
These attacks need to be at the top of the global agenda during discussions on confronting global terrorism, Freeland added.
And when such attacks do occur, the international community must not be afraid to condemn them specifically as racist acts of terrorism, Freeland said.
“We cannot hide behind euphemisms that distract from the truth,” she said. “In fact, doing so puts our citizens, especially those from religious minorities and racialized communities, in greater danger.”
In the wake of acts of terrorism carried out by Muslims, Western countries often call upon Muslim countries and Muslim leaders to condemn those attacks in the name of their people and their faith, she said.
“It should follow that, as the foreign minister of a majority-white and majority-Christian country, I feel a specific and personal responsibility to denounce white supremacist attacks in the same way,” Freeland said.
Collective effort
While hate is eternal, the way it spreads changes over time, she added.
The international community must keep a close watch on how hateful messages spread through online forums and social media, Freeland said.
This work cannot be undertaken in isolation, she added.
“Each of our countries will, of course, address this issue in different ways, but we need to recognize that this is ultimately an international problem, and we need to act collectively to address it,” Freeland said.
“The Internet and social media know no borders and so we must work together to find ways to address online radicalization.”
‘We are family’
Freeland also took the opportunity to offer Canada’s support and compassion to the people of New Zealand.
“As fellow members of the Commonwealth, Canada and New Zealand have a close relationship. We are more than friends, we are family, and Canadians felt great compassion and real pain following the terrible attacks in Christchurch,” Freeland said.
“In particular, I’d like to salute the moral leadership of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has distinguished herself not only to the people of New Zealand, but to the whole world.”
Canada contributes $15M to boost number of female peacekeepers
Later in the day, Freeland announced that Canada will contribute $15 million to the launch of the Elsie Initiative Fund for Uniformed Women in Peace Operations.
The initiative was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in November of 2017 during the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial hosted in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The goal of the pilot project is overcome barriers to the increased participation of women in peace operations.
The Elsie Initiative Fund will offer countries that contribute troops and police to the UN, as well as UN organizations, funding to support the deployment of trained and qualified uniformed women, Freeland said.
“One central challenge for peacekeeping in the 21st century is the absence of women, whether as police officers, soldiers or leaders,” Freeland said in a statement.

The contention that Oz is a cleverly crafted political parable reached its apogee in the erudite pages of the Journal of Political Economy. In an article entitled “The ‘Wizard of Oz’ as a Monetary Allegory” (1990), Hugh Rockoff examined the analogies between Baum’s use of imagery and the monetary politics of the Populist era. In the book version of Oz, Dorothy treads the Yellow Brick Road in silver shoes, not in ruby slippers. Silver shoes on a golden road? A key plank in the Populist platform was a demand for “free silver”-that is, the “free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold” at a fixed ratio of sixteen to one. Populists and other free-silver proponents advocated unlimited coinage of the white metal in order to inflate the money supply, thus making it easier for cash-strapped farmers and small businessmen to borrow money and pay off debts. At the Democratic National Convention in 1896, the assembled delegates nominated William Jennings Bryan, an avid supporter of free silver, for president. The Bryan nomination created a split in the Democratic Party, as gold-standard delegates bolted the convention. When the Populists convened two weeks later, they decided to endorse Bryan, putting all their reformist eggs in the free-silver basket. When Bryan was roundly defeated by the “sound money” Republican William McKinley, the Populist Party, which had considerable strength in the Midwest and South, fell into rapid decline. By 1900, when Bryan was again defeated by McKinley, Populism already had one foot in the political grave.
According to Rockoff, the monetary politics of the 1896 campaign, which divided the electorate into “silverites” and “goldbugs,” supplied the central backdrop for Baum’s allegorical adaptation. Incorporating the analogies developed by Littlefield and others, and adding a few of his own, Rockoff provided a detailed and sustained analysis of the political and economic issues symbolically refracted in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Separately, Yemeni forces launched a barrage of artillery rounds at the gathering of Saudi forces in the kingdom’s Asir region.
Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen on March 26, 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former Yemeni president Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing Ansarullah.
Millions of Yemenis took to the streets of the capital, Sana’a, and other major cities on Monday to mark the fourth anniversary of the Saudi aggression.
The demonstrators carried placards and Yemeni national flags, chanting slogans against Saudi Arabia, Israel and the US, which have been providing military support to the invasion.
The offensive initially consisted of a bombing campaign, but was later coupled with a naval blockade and the deployment of ground forces into Yemen.

Trump cuts all direct assistance to Northern Triangle countries Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala
The stunning development came late Friday night.
In a stunning about-face, State Department officials said that President Donald Trump is cutting off all direct assistance to the so-called Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
“At the Secretary’s instruction, we are carrying out the President’s direction and ending FY [fiscal year] 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle,” a State Department spokesperson told ABC News, referring to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We will be engaging Congress as part of this process.”
These three countries are the primary source of migrants to the U.S., but for years the U.S. has worked with them to stabilize their political environments and economies and end violence and corruption so that migrants wouldn’t leave in the first place.
Trump hinted at the cuts earlier on Friday, telling reporters,”I’ve ended payments to Guatemala, to Honduras, and to El Salvador. No money goes there anymore.”
While the president has threatened these cuts before, this time the administration is actually following through.
Trump said the funds totaled $500 million, but it wasn’t clear Friday if that figure was accurate. The State Department announced in December that the U.S. would mobilize $5.8 billion in public and private american investment to these three countries.
“We’re not paying them anymore because they haven’t done a thing for us,” he added.
His senior-most advisers, however, have carried a very different tune, talking very often about the importance of this assistance to stem the flow of illegal immigration.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was in Mexico and Honduras this week meeting with their leadership to sign new partnership agreements. Pompeo testified before the House of Representatives on Wednesday about the administration’s efforts, saying the president had instructed him and Nielsen to use U.S. funding to “develop a set of programs that reward effective outcomes, that reward good leadership, that get us to a place where we actually achieve the outcomes.”
In a speech in Brazil last June, Vice President Mike Pence touted the “significant resources” the administration was putting toward this effort, though much of those resources were allocated under former President Barack Obama’s administration.
“The United States of America has never been more committed to strengthening our partnership with the nations in the Northern Triangle to help … tackle the problems facing our shared neighborhood,” Pence said in October when hosting leaders from the Northern Triangle and Mexico at the State Department with Pompeo.
Trump’s previous threats to pull the plug, however, had often left U.S. officials scratching their heads and straining to explain why these funds described as key to stemming migration would be cut off — as punishment for not stemming migration.
When Pompeo was challenged on the president’s previous threatening tweets on Wednesday, he told Congress, “I’m not going to comment on my evaluation. You asked me about the U.S. policy, and I’ve done my level-best to articulate it.”

“A failure to successfully reintegrate Taliban fighters and their families into Afghan society, a failure to improve civil policing, and a failure to ensure effective oversight of continuing foreign financial assistance could each undermine the sustainability of any peace agreement that might be reached with the Afghan Taliban.
These findings formed the crux of an annual report, the High-Risk List 2019, released recently by the United States Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconciliation (SIGAR).
“The gains from US investment in Afghanistan’s reconstruction face multiple threats: continued insecurity, endemic corruption, weak Afghan institutions, the insidious impact of the narcotics trade, and inadequate coordination and oversight by donors,” the report states.
It says “the social, economic, and political reintegration of tens of thousands of former fighters into Afghan society will be critical for the country to achieve lasting peace and stability”.
“Ex-combatants will face the challenges of a weak economy with few livelihood options, political uncertainty, ongoing insecurity, and distrust among a populace traumatised by war,” the report warns.
“While current estimates for the number of active Taliban fighters vary, the nominee for commander of US Central Command, Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie Jr, has put the figure at 60,000 fighters … Reintegration efforts aim to both ensure that individual former fighters do not revert to violence, and at the macro level, to contribute to peace-building, prevent conflict recurrence, and reestablish the state’s monopoly over the use of force.”
The report says “formal reintegration efforts require programmatic capabilities – including data collection, vetting, monitoring and evaluation, and resource mobilisation – that would test the capacities of the Afghan government and international donors”.
‘Islamic State a bigger threat than in 2016’
The SIGAR report also identifies the militant group, Islamic State, as a potential threat to sustained peace in Afghanistan. “Although US officials have consistently asserted that Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, has been degraded on multiple fronts, the group poses a greater security threat to the Afghan people and security forces than it did in 2016,” it states.
“Since the 2017 High-Risk List, IS-K has gone from being concentrated in a few districts in Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan to having a limited presence in two other provinces—Kunar and Jowzjan.”
The report asserts that despite several successful US operations against it, “IS-K remains able to carry out mass-casualty attacks on major population centres”.
“The number and lethality of IS-K attacks in Afghanistan increased since the last High-Risk List. According to the UN, in 2017, there were 100 attacks claimed by or attributed to IS-K that caused 399 civilian deaths, and in 2018, there were 138 attacks resulting in 681 civilian deaths (a 71% increase in civilian deaths).”
The SIGAR report further warns that “IS-K is not a party to the current peace talks and continues to pose a threat to the United States, the Afghan government, and the Taliban even if a peace settlement should be reached”.”
