Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

    Recently, I had the pleasure of teaching the kids of a dear friend of mine about some recent European history: specifically about the role the Winged Hussars played in breaking the Ottoman siege of Vienna.

    Yeah, us native (even transplanted to The New World) Europeans have a slightly different definitions of ‘recent history’ than most New World natives – and certainly vastly different from the current European elites, whose memory seems to be shorter that that of a catatonic Alzheimer’s sufferer…no offense to the Alzheimer’s sufferer’s intended.

      Given the grandmother’s previous history of having been sexually abused as a child, it’s amazing she hasn’t crawled back into the bottle. Many made of less stern stuff would be waltzing with pink elephants right about now.

      Mandatory, hard time, felony incarceration might make mama think twice about maiming her child.

    Prominent media outlets claimed parents were notified beforehand and allowed to opt their children out of the event. But those outlets got the story wrong. The letter, written solely in English despite the school’s sizable non-English-fluent population, nowhere mentions “opting out.” Moreover, although the letter notes that a book written by a transgender person would be read to the class, it does not explicitly say that kindergarteners will be told they may have a “girl brain but a boy body” or a boy brain and a girl body, as the book claims.   10. Took a walk with the family into the neighborhood shopping area last Friday. One of my sons and I passed an exceptionally tall woman who was walking slowly. Actually, it was a man dressed like a woman. His hair was long with blonde highlights, his nails done, makeup–the whole nine yards. A minute after we passed him we stopped to wait for the rest of the family to catch up. This meant turning to look back for them. This meant turning to see the six-foot-four man in heels trying to walk on an icey sidewalk. You can’t help but at least glance at the spectacle. At least in the old days the freaks got paid by the circus. Now, if you notice a person who screams “Notice Me!” by going out in public this way, you’re something-phobic. It is not my wish to make any person feel uncomfortable, but now that Postmodernism is successfully releasing every sexual bat in the attic to an unwitting public (particularly children) forgive me if I happen to notice. To me, such behavior is revealing a very private compulsion that is best kept private. If a man wants to dress like his mommie that’s his business. But to do so in public strikes me as a latent aggression. I’ve seen them in hardware stores and waiting for buses. I saw one at McDonald’s a couple of weeks ago. Live and let live, knock yourself out, fill yer boots, yadda-yadda-yadda. But don’t politicize yourself. A sexual minority politicizing itself inevitably means that a statistical anomaly be presented as, suddenly, normal. Normalizing an anomaly? Really? In the case of the gay lobby a statistical deviation based on sexual orientation constituting 1.5-2% of a population can be suspected of seeking something beyond self-protection. When the prize becomes political power it is no longer about the downtrodden few. It is about the tail wagging the dog.

    Now, real women who have been raped by real men are becoming deprived of help because fake men demand to join the club of real women even in misery. How contorted. How selfish and self-absorbed. How despicable. It’s similar to the hostile takeover of the Boy Scouts. The PoMo deconstruction machinery is in perpetual motion and cares not what it kills.   12. Dutch Police Arrest Third Suspect Over Deadly Shooting in Utrecht (sputniknews, Mar 19, 2019)

    “On 18 March, police and anti-terrorism forces in the Dutch city of Utrecht were scrambled and the city was put on a high terrorist alert after a man shot dead three people and injured five more in a tram.

    A third suspect has been arrested over possible involvement in a shooting in Utrecht that left three people dead and five people injured, Dutch police reported via Twitter on Tuesday.

    According to public prosecution office spokesman Ties Kortmann, as of now there are three people in custody — the alleged shooter, 37-year-old Turkish-born Gokmen Tanis and two others.

    Tanis is being held on suspicion of manslaughter with a possible terrorist intent, though the investigation is currently underway and other possible motives are being considered.

    The day before, the Turkish agency Anadolu reported, citing Tanis’ relatives that the suspect had fired at his relatives over “family matters”.

    According to Dutch media, Tanis has already had legal problems. Thus, according to the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, Tanis had been summoned to court on 4 March in connection with rape accusations, including sexually assaulting his victim several times, and threatening to burn down her home…”

  13. Google Forced to Drop Christian Ad on LGBT Over Internal Backlash – Repor (sputniknews, mar 19, 2019)

    “This is not the first time Google employees have forced the top management to alter the company’s policies towards certain issues. Last time, some of them were offended by the use of word “family” in an internal presentation and pressured the company to avoid its use in the future.

    Google employees were behind barring a video on same-sex relations by Christian radio host Michael Brown from the company’s advertisements on YouTube in June 2018, internal communications obtained by The Daily Caller showed. One of the employees pointed out that Brown’s video popped up in ads on channels run by gay content creators.

    On the video in question Brown explains that members of the LGBT community are welcome as Christians, but they are still called on to follow Christian norms, when it comes to sex and marriage, which is normally seen as a union between a man and a woman.

    Google’s vice president for product management and ads, Vishal Sharma, decided to personally intervene in the matter, according to the internal communications, and suggested banning Brown’s video from the advertisement platform for good because it “violated [Google’s] policy”.

    “YouTube is an open platform and we support the free expression of creators with a wide range of views. But we don’t allow advertising that disparages people based on who they are — including their sexual orientation — and we remove ads that violate this basic principle”, the internal email from the vice president read.

    Google employees have affected company policies and actions in the past. Notably, last time a group of employees complained that they were offended by the use of word “family” in an internal presentation of a product related to children. One of the employees pointed out that the term was used in context of “household with children” excluding those families, who do not have kids and thus being “offensive, inappropriate, homophobic, and wrong”.

    The complaints forced Google Vice President Pavni Diwanji to step in and promise that the company would acknowledge raised “concerns” and promised to find a way to change the term for a more “inclusive” one.”

  14. ‘Not Welcome’: Swedish Municipality to Give Daesh Returnees a Cold Shoulder (sputniknews, Mar 19, 2019)

    “Staffanstorp has become Sweden’s first municipality to completely reject the idea of helping Daesh* terrorists “re-integrate” into society with the help of public funds. No resources should be wasted on helping the terrorists, the municipality said. These plans, however, have been met with a backlash from legal professionals.

    In a national first, the Staffanstorp municipality in Sweden’s southernmost Skåne County intends to deprive jihadists and people who have supported terrorism all municipal services, signalling that they are not welcome.

    “If you have joined a terrorist organisation, you have hereby turned away from the democratic society and the welfare systems we have in place. This means you are no longer covered by them”, Staffanstorp municipality board chairman Christian Sonesson of the Moderate Party told Swedish Radio.

    On his Facebook page, Sonesson described his municipality as “the first one in Sweden to stand on the victims’ side”, while publishing the bill.

    In his proposal, Christian Sonesson made it clear that people who have supported terrorism will not receive housing, benefits, adult education or other forms of municipal support. According to Sonesson, one doesn’t have to be a convicted terrorist to be denied municipal services.

    “We make an initial assessment, and if we suspect you have joined any terrorist organisation, you will be no longer covered by the municipality”, Sonesson explained. “The person in question is free to appeal our decision”, he added.

    Ole Lundin, a professor of administrative law at Uppsala University, one of Sweden’s leading educational institutions, called the proposal “ridiculous” and claimed it contradicted both the Constitution, the social services law, and various support laws.

    “These are laws and regulations that apply in Sweden and have been decided by the parliament and the government. Only they stipulate when one can be denied benefits and the like, and none of these regulations include anything about opportunity to deprive those suspected of co-operation with Daesh different types of social assistance”, Olle Lundin told Swedish Radio. He called the municipality’s lack of understanding about Sweden’s legal system “distressing”.

    Sonesson, on the other hand, welcomed a legal investigation into his proposal. Still, he stuck to his guns that terrorists and their sympathisers are not welcome in Staffanstorp. “Our solidarity is with the victims and freedom. I hope that more municipalities around the country support our approach”, he said.

    Meanwhile, governments in Scandinavia are still pondering their options on how to handle the returning Daesh terrorists or “foreign fighters”. Sweden’s leading terrorism researcher Magnus Ranstorp of the National Defence College argued that Sweden should avoid actively helping these people at all costs, suggesting that they belong to the most hardened variety.

    “They are the most dangerous. It is not a good idea to bring them home. In any case, not actively helping them”, Ranstorp told Finnish national broadcaster Yle.

    Ranstorp also said the Swedish authorities have dropped the ball in handling the returning terrorists, reacting too weakly and too late. He also suggested that legislation was deficient and lagged behind in bringing people who have committed atrocities to account.

    Out of 300 Swedish jihadists, about 150 have returned home, and more are currently attempting to come back as their “caliphate” lies in shambles. According to Ranstorp, 80 percent of Swedish jihadists hail from four “vulnerable” areas in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Örebro.”

  15. Knife Attack at Oslo School Leaves Four People Injured – Reports (sputniknews, mar 19, 2019)

    “A student at a school in the Norwegian capital of Oslo has injured one teacher and three staff members, police said on Tuesday morning.

    Four employees at the Brynseng School in east Oslo were taken to a local hospitals with minor injuries.

    Police were called before 9am local time following reports of a student threatening a teacher with a knife.

    The boy was arrested but police have not found an immediate motive, police stated. Officers have launched an investigation and were speaking to witnesses, Sven Christian Lie of the Oslo Police district said in a press release.

    “It is a very young boy who is arrested. I can’t say anything more about the grade level. He was arrested inside the school,” Mr. Lie said.

    A press statement said: “Four people were taken to the emergency care department for treatment.

    “The injured are employees of the school. We are still on the site with several patrols and are conducting witness interrogation.”

    Brynseng school opened in 2017 and has over 800 enrolled pupils. The school declined to comment to Norwegian media despite requests to do so.

    But local media quoted a text message sent by headteacher Maria Tindberg, stating to parents that the situation was “calm and under control”.

    According to a survey for Norway’s educational association last year, one in five teachers had been the victim of violence in the last 12 months.”

  16. 7 Killed in Attack on Cars Carrying Election Officials in Bangladesh – Reports (sputniknews, Mar 19, 2019)

    “As many as seven people were killed and 13 more injured in Bangladeshi Baghaichhari sub-district as a result of an attack on cars carrying electoral commission staff and law enforcement officers, local media reported on Monday, citing the police.

    United News of Bangladesh reported that the incident took place at 18:30 local time (12:30 p.m. GMT), when unidentified man opened fire at the cars from a hill at Noymile. Members of the electoral commission were returning from polling stations after counting votes in the second round of the local elections, according to the newspaper.

    The newspaper noted that six people were killed on the spot, while another one died in hospital. Medical assistance is being provided to all injured people.

    Previous month, Bangladeshi parliamentary election sparked protests, during which at least 17 people were reportedly killed and over 60 others were injured.”

    “A single Somali immigrant costs the Finnish state almost 1 million euros during their lifetime, a pioneering survey has found. Given Finland’s reception rate, this may result in billions of euros.

    A unique survey by the think tank Suomen Perusta linked to the Finns party has estimated lifetime costs associated with Iraqi and Somali immigrants, who constitute the largest groups of so-called “humanitarian immigration” to Finland and contributed the most in 2015, the peak of Europe’s migrant crisis.

    Using government-generated statistics, Suomen Perusta calculated that an average Iraqi migrant moving to Finland between the ages of 20 to 24 is expected to cost Finland €690,000 ($783,000). A Somali migrant of the same age was estimated to be even more expensive, burdening the Finnish state with €951,000 ($1.08 million). If child-related issues are included, the costs rise to €844,000 ($957,000) and €1,343,000 ($1.5 million) respectively. For the sake of comparison, the reference mean value for native-born Finns was set at 0 Euros.

    The research also found that the asylum-seeker and refugee expenditure in the state budget is only about 4-6 percent of the entire accumulated life-cycle.

    The second-generation of migrants who have grown up in Finland were found to have a rate of social and economic exclusion and income support 6-8 times higher than native-born Finnish young adults, despite having received basic education in Finland. A total of 49 and 50 percent of 22-year-old Iraqi and Somali migrants were income support recipients, as opposed to only 11 percent of their Finnish peers, the report found.

    Admittedly, the authors didn’t account for all possible fiscal effects in their study. Had those “missing” items been recognised as well, they argued, the effects would have been even more negative, the study said. Some of these may include lower contribution for old age pensions, indirect integration costs, and higher health services costs due to factors such as translation needs.

    From the Finnish public finance point of view, the authors concluded, no new migbrants should be welcomed to Finland when expected life-cycle effects are negative.

    “The conclusion of the study is that from the standpoint of the public finances of Finland it is not beneficial to take any migrants born in Iraq or Somalia”, the report said. “The same conclusion holds for whichever way the results are broken down: by age, by years of education, the age when the migrant arrives in Finland or their employment status.

    However, the research led by Samuli Salminen, was met with criticism. Hannu Pikkola, a professor of economics at the University of Vaasa, slammed both the starting point and the results of the research.

    “These numbers sound like what a person pays to society if they become incapacitated”, Pekkola said, as quoted by the newspaper Aamulehti.

    According to Pekkola, taxes paid by migrants should not be estimated, despite their lower value.

    “Work has many other effects. The benefits to the national economy double when people consume”, Pekkola said. He also argued that migrants children are beneficial amid Finland’s protracted demographic slump, as the nation has reached its lowest nativity rate in 150 years.

    Others ventured that this survey will be used by the right-wing and anti-immigrant Finns party in the upcoming general election.

    According to Finland’s Migration Board (Migri), almost 5,000 Iraqi and just under 3,000 Somali asylum seekers received a positive decision last year alone. If Suomen Perusta’s calculation is true, they will set Finland back €3.5 billion ($3.9 billion) and €2.9 billion ($3.3) respectively, the newspaper Iltalehti reported.”

    “AROUND 40 people have been evacuated as police and fire services respond to reports of a bomb near the European Commission.

    Police have cordoned off a 100 metre section on D Augerghem near the British embassy, just off the Schumann roundabout where the EU’s Commission and European Council is based. The cordon and evacuations were sparked this morning after a consulting firm for the Commission said they had received a call about a bomb, Belgium media SudInfo.de reports. Firefighters have now been seen entering the building of the firm, which is understood to have been evacuated by staff.

    Pictures from the scene show police and a fire engine blocking the road where the firm is located near the British embassy.

    Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire service said: “The firefighters were called on site, there is an officer, a pumper and a ladder.

    “The SMUR of the military hospital is also on-site.”

    Ilse van de keere, spokeswoman for the Brussels-Ixelles police zone also said: ”A perimeter has been established.”

    The UK embassy in Brussels is also in the cordon, but it is so far unclear if staff have been evacuated from the embassy building.

    The 30-year-old, who was not identified by name, was arrested last week in the city of Angers in Western France at a local post office while attempting to pick up the firearm that had originally come from the United States, Le Parisien reports.

    On Friday, the man was indicted on charges of importing category A weapons, according to public prosecutor Yves Gambert.

    Local media also added that the suspect had served a seven-year prison sentence in 2010 for violence with a weapon and targetted a police officer. While in prison, he converted to Islam and was examined by security services in 2016 following the Bataclan massacre in November of 2015.

    Critics say some of the measures, published in the official gazette late Monday, are stricter than those approved by lawmakers last year.

    Prominent Egyptian journalists are calling the measures unconstitutional, saying they grant far-reaching powers to authorities to censor the media, in violation of basic press freedoms.

    Mohamed Abdel-Hafiz says he and fellow member of the journalists’ union will mount a legal challenge to the new measures.”

    “The FBI’s main suspect, an African-American security guard named Gerald Wallace, had already admitted he was the one who called a Miami-area mosque to declare, “I’m gonna kill you,” but investigators were still shocked by what they found on Wallace’s phone during their interview with him two years ago.

    Wallace — a 35-year-old black man — had called the Ku Klux Klan over and over again because, he told investigators, “I do like what they’re saying.”

    “What is the part that you like about their message?” a detective from the City of Miami Gardens Police Department wanted to know.

    “What they say about Islam,” Wallace insisted. “I hate [Muslims].”

    Wallace’s “odd” case would be “comical” — “like something out of a ‘Chappelle’s Show’ skit” — if it weren’t so “troubling,” a U.S. prosecutor later told a federal judge, alluding to the Comedy Central character Clayton Bigsby, a white supremacist who didn’t realize he was African-American because he was blind.

    Wallace’s embrace of the Ku Klux Klan, despite the group’s notorious history of killing and targeting African-Americans, is an extreme example of just how potent Islamophobia has become inside the United States — and around the world.

    The two most recent years of FBI statistics reveal the highest number of anti-Muslim assaults ever recorded in America — a three-fold jump from a decade ago.

    In 2007, the FBI recorded 33 anti-Muslims assaults. In 2017, the FBI recorded 105 such assaults, and another 168 incidents targeting Muslims for practicing their religion.

    One of those additional incidents was Wallace’s threat to the Islamic center in Miami Gardens. He ultimately pleaded guilty to obstructing the free exercise of his victims’ religious beliefs, and he was sentenced to one year behind bars. He was released last year. ABC News’ efforts to reach him were unsuccessful.

    In the wake of Friday’s massacre in New Zealand that left 50 Muslim worshipers dead, Americans are grappling with Islamophobia in their own communities and discussing how to stop it from metastasizing even more.

    “It’s absolutely necessary that we don’t wait until we have horrific situations like [New Zealand] … to pay attention to this issue,” Dr. Abbas Barzeger, the research director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said at a press conference on Friday.

    Stats paint a stark picture on assaults against Muslims
    Anti-Muslim assaults account for a small fraction of hate-based assaults reported to police each year, but Muslims overall account for an even smaller fraction of the total U.S. population, as reflected in findings from the FBI and Gallup Organization.

    Accordingly, Muslims are three times more likely to be assaulted for their religion than Jews, who themselves have increasingly become targets in recent years, peaking at 100 anti-Semitic assaults in 2015. Hate-inspired assaults also victimize Muslims at a rate twice as high as African-Americans, who suffer several hundred targeted assaults each year, an ABC News review of the FBI’s 2017 statistics found.

    In January, police in upstate New York arrested four white teenagers for allegedly plotting to attack a largely Muslim community nicknamed “Islamberg.” The teenagers believed Muslims “were automatically terrorists,” and in the teenagers’ homes police found 22 firearms, ammunition and at least two homemade bombs, according to court documents.

    “Their collective intention was clear: kill as many members of the ‘Islamberg’ community as possible,” the court documents said. The teenagers now face conspiracy-related charges.

    Also in January, two white men from Illinois pleaded guilty to federal weapons charges after detonating a bomb at a mosque in Bloomington, Minnesota. No one was injured in the incident, but the men wanted to let Muslims know, “You’re not welcome here,” one of the men, 29-year-old Michael McWhorter, later told authorities, according to charging documents. A third man charged in the case is awaiting trial.

    Islamophobic rhetoric has crept into ‘mainstream’
    Former counterterrorism officials who’ve served during both Democrat and Republican administrations believe the rise in hate stems from the rise of social media, while others warn more traditional media and even politicians also play a role.

    In his interview with police two years ago, Wallace said he started to mistrust Muslims and believe “most of them are terrorists” after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Then, more recently, he’d “seen some people” on Facebook and elsewhere online who share his anti-Muslim views, and he’d posted his own hate-filled messages about Muslims on YouTube. During the 2017 interview, Wallace said he decided to threaten worshipers at the Miami-area mosque after watching a morning TV program that made him “angry” and “fed up” with Muslims.

    Platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have “few barriers to entry” and few “standards for exit,” former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told ABC News on Sunday.

    Islamophobic rhetoric has even crept into “mainstream” radio programs and TV shows, Barzeger said.

    Just last week, Fox News Channel host Judge Jeanine Pirro was widely condemned for questioning on air the patriotism of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democratic lawmaker who is a Muslim-American woman.

    But as Muslim advocacy groups see it, political leaders inside the United States, including President Donald Trump, share at least some blame for what CAIR’s executive director called “the growing menace of Islamophobia and hate.”

    “We hold them accountable because their words matter,” the executive director, Nihad Awad, said Friday. “Their policies matter … [and] they impact the lives of innocent people.”

    When Fox News ended up suspending Pirro’s show on Saturday — one day after the New Zealand attacks — Trump called on the network to “bring back” Pirro and “stop working soooo hard on being politically correct,” as he tweeted Sunday.

    The White House has denied responsibility for any rise in hate, and Trump said Friday he doesn’t see white nationalism as a growing threat around the world.

    “I think it’s a small group of people that have very, very serious problems,” Trump said.

    Condemnation must ‘be backed up by action’
    Lawmakers, advocacy groups and others have proposed an array of ways to fight Islamophobia and other forms of hate.

    Former secretary Johnson said that while robust law enforcement efforts and community partnerships are important, internet providers and online platforms need to start engaging in “self-regulation.”

    “It’s incumbent upon [them] to be vigilant when it comes to hate speech content that violates their very own terms of service,” he said.

    Barzeger, meanwhile, said members of Congress must do more than simply speak out against hate.

    “Condemning rhetoric is [just more] rhetoric,” Barzeger said. “It has to be backed up by action.”

    Specifically, lawmakers must pass legislation requiring state and local law enforcement agencies to report hate crime-related data to the federal government, according to Barzeger. Currently, FBI statistics are mostly compiled from information volunteered by state and local agencies.

    More than a year ago, a research article published by the U.S. government suggested using another “big” tool to combat Islamophobia: America’s schools.

    “Given the current spread of misinformation and fear, it is vital that teachers from preschool to college address the issue of Islamophobia” and provide “accurate information about the history and nature of Islam,” said the 2017 article, sponsored by the Department of Education.

    “Unless we succeed in educating students during their school years, it will be very difficult to change the perceptions of negativity about any particular religion later in adulthood,” the article warned.”

    The bills amending existing information laws overwhelmingly passed both chambers of Russian parliament in less than two months. Observers and some lawmakers have criticized the legislation for its vague language and potential to stifle free speech.

    Democratic Rep. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez and her top aide are no longer board members of the outside PAC credited with orchestrating her political rise, according to a corporate document filed Friday to a Washington, D.C., agency.

    The New York Democrat and her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, who served as her campaign chair, joined the board of Justice Democrats in December 2017, according to the political action committee’s website. It also said the two held “legal control over the entity” at the same time it was playing a key role in supporting Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign prior to her shock victory over incumbent Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in June 2018.

  30. The Utrecht shooter was found through financial sleuthing.
    Initially police tried to triangulate his position of his mobile phone, but the number they had was no longer in use. The shooter used a friend’s mobile though (presumably borrowed from the guy who sheltered him). He transferred money from his bank account. After obtaining an “emergency warrant”, police was able to triangulate his buddy’s phone, and follow the trail from there to the safe house.
    This is unprecedented afaik, and bad news for people who value their privacy.

    “We don’t know much about him, except for that his father told us that he had not been in touch with his family for a long time,” Mr. Baran said. A relative of the suspect is a candidate for mayor of Yozgat, he added.

    Calling his story at times “baffling,” “practically incomprehensible,” and “gibberish,” a Calgary judge has rejected a United Arab Emirates refugee claimant’s evidence on how he came to smuggle child pornography into Canada.

    Justice Earl Wilson on Friday convicted Hani Al Askari on charges of importation and possession of illicit material found on his electronic devices when he tried to enter Canada on April 12, 2015, at the Coutts border crossing.

    Wilson rejected Al Askari’s claim he had worked for the Abu Dhabi police force, and for a time the Damascus police in Syria, as a civilian agent to weed out child pornographers.

    Al Askari, 36, was nabbed with more than 300 videos and nearly 100 photographs on the electronic devices he brought with him when he came to Canada to claim refugee status.

    And he said he had no idea the material, which he said was provided by Abu Dhabi police to assist in luring predators, was still on the devices.

    Wilson rejected that claim and the notion Al Askari possessed the material for a lawful purpose related to the administration of justice.

    “He was, I find, a deceitful witness trying to turn fantasy into reality,” the Court of Queen’s Bench judge said.

    “I’m satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt the accused is guilty of (the charges).”

    Crown prosecutor Jenny Rees said she will be seeking a prison term of three years when the case returns to court next month.

    Defence lawyer Nate Whitling will argue Criminal Code provisions calling for a minimum one year sentence for importation be struck down as unconstitutional.

    Al Askari remains free on bail pending sentencing.

    Archbishop Justin said attacks on Muslims marked an attack on all mankind and he pledged that the Church of England would explore how it can be “more effective in visible signs of togetherness” with Muslims.

    He continued: “I commit myself to listening more and putting this higher up the agenda in my own actions and words.

    “Jesus taught his followers to be peacemakers, ‘for they will be called children of God’.

    “Making peace is an action, it doesn’t just happen. It requires us to be curious, to listen, to move across differences of culture, ethnicity, religion and politics in love.

    ‘No evidence’ to support government’s view that reducing immigration will improve integration, think tank says

    A new study is calling on Quebec’s government to restore its immigration target of 50,000 newcomers a year.

    The study by the independent Institut de recherche et d’informations socio-économiques (IRIS) contends that the government’s justification for reducing its immigration target for 2019 to 40,000 — that too many new arrivals are not integrating into Quebec society — “has never been established scientifically.”

    The study follows a series of controversial moves by the province’s new Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government, including its recent effort to dismiss a backlog of just over 18,000 pending Quebec Skilled Worker Program applications as part of a proposed overhaul of the province’s immigration laws known as Bill 9.

    Written by researcher Julia Posca, the paper provides a statistical snapshot of indicators including mastery of French, education levels and employment rate to assess the CAQ’s claims that immigrants have been falling short in these areas.

    In terms of language, the study points to statistics from both Quebec’s Immigration Ministry and the Institute de la statistique du Quebec that show nearly 60 per cent of immigrants admitted to Quebec already speak French or French and English by the time they arrive in the province.

    Immigrants to Quebec are also better educated compared to non-immigrants, Posca writes. Among Quebecers aged 25 to 54, 42 per cent of immigrants have a certificate, diploma or university degree compared to 24.9 per cent of Quebec residents who were born in Canada.

    As to employment, Posca said discrepancies persist between immigrants and Canadian-born residents of Quebec, but the gap is narrowing. The employment rate of Quebecers born in Canada was 86.6 per cent in 2018 compared to 78.9 per cent for immigrants, which Posca noted was slightly better than Ontario’s immigrant employment rate of 78.5 per cent.

    “In summary, immigrants in Quebec master French as never before, are highly educated and participate massively in the labour market,” Posca writes.

    The study also downplayed the government’s claims that too few immigrants to Quebec are retained. Posca points to statistics showing that 82.2 per cent of economic immigrants to Quebec admitted to the province in 2010 were still there five years later.

    “The fact is if we compare Quebec to other provinces in Canada we realize that [Quebec] is one of the four provinces where the retention rate is greatest,” Posca told CIC News. “We realize that provinces that have more immigrants have the best retention rates.”

    The IRIS study points to a 2018 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development study that shows countries that welcome more immigrants are also those where immigrants enjoy better outcomes relative to those born there.

    “There is nothing to indicate that accepting fewer immigrants will improve their lot,” it argues.

    The study posits that the main obstacles to integration are in fact issues on the host society’s end such as the recognition for professional credentials and work experience obtained outside Canada and employment discrimination.

    Bill 9, however, does not address either of these concerns, it says.

    The move to reduce immigration at a time when Quebec’s population is ageing and its employers are facing a serious shortage of labour is also questioned, as is what the study calls the CAQ’s “utilitarian” view of immigration as a means to primarily economic ends.

    “In effect, the government is putting an end to the citizen’s approach to immigration, where immigrants are considered for their social, cultural and economic contributions,” it says.

    The study recommends that Quebec return to its previous admissions target of 50,000 newcomers “as much for human as demographic and economic reasons.”

    “With this level of immigration, the employment rate has been going up. The number of immigrants was not the problem,” Posca told CIC News.

    “Quebec also has an ageing population, so if we want to address this problem in the future, we should welcome immigrants who are, on average, younger than the population in Quebec,” she added. “It doesn’t seem like a good idea right now to not host those people who want to have a life project here in Quebec.”

    The study also calls on the government to allocate a “significant” budget for both governmental and non-governmental organizations in the province that work directly with newcomers to the province in order to meet its stated goal of “efficient and personalized” integration services.

    In response to the study, the government stood by its views on immigration and highlighted the fact it was elected on a platform to reform Quebec’s immigration policies.

    It took 29 minutes and thousands of views before the live-streamed massacre at a mosque in New Zealand was reported to Facebook and ultimately removed, the social media network said in a new statement late Monday.

    The horrific terrorist attack, which killed 50 people at two mosques, played out live on Facebook as the shooter pulled up to one mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, grabbed guns out of his Subaru’s rear hatch door and stormed inside, opening fire on worshipers. By the time Facebook removed the 17-minute video, it had been viewed roughly 4,000 times, the company said.

    Not a single user who encountered the video during the live broadcast reported it during that time, Facebook said. The first user report didn’t come in until 12 minutes after the live broadcast was over — after the footage had already begun proliferating across the Internet.

    The new information comes as Facebook and other social media platforms confront a barrage of criticism and calls for boycotts over their role in enabling the viral spread of a graphically violent mass murder peppered with virulent racist commentary. Facebook has said it removed 1.5 million videos of the rampage in the 24 hours following the attack. But critics, including New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, have charged that Facebook and other online platforms have not done enough to develop stronger tools to control the spread of hate speech and violence.

    Of the 1.5 million videos Facebook said it removed, more than 1.2 million were blocked automatically upon upload, which Ardern said indicated that Facebook had “powers to take a very direct approach to instances of speech that incites violence or that incites hate.”

    She said on Tuesday that the New Zealand government would be looking into the role that social media played in amplifying the terrorist attack.

    “There is no question that ideas and language of division have existed for decades,” Ardern said Tuesday from the Parliament floor. “But the form of distribution, the tools of organization — they are new. We cannot simply sit back and accept that these platforms just exist and that what is said on them is not the responsibility of the place where they are published. They are the publisher, not just the postman. This cannot be a case of all profit, no responsibility.”

    In the Monday night statement, Chris Sonderby, Facebook’s vice president and deputy general counsel, gave a brief account of how the platform was first alerted to the video and the extent to which it spread before Facebook acted.

    The live broadcast of the shooting from the accused gunman, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, was viewed fewer than 200 times, Sonderby said. It would be encountered thousands more times before New Zealand police reported the content to Facebook. Sonderby said Facebook removed the video “within minutes” of receiving the alert from police.

    But by then, Sonderby said, a copy of the video had already been posted via a file-sharing site to 8chan, the unmoderated message board where the suspected shooter’s 74-page manifesto raging about the “invasion” of immigrants and sharing false claims of “white genocide” was also shared.

    Shot from a chilling first-person vantage point like a violent video game, the video continued to proliferate across YouTube, Twitter and Reddit, as The Washington Post previously reported. Internet users were able to outsmart the platforms’ artificial-intelligence systems intended to detect the banned content simply by making small alterations, such as changing the color or tone of the video. Given the detection problems, Sonderby said Monday that Facebook had “expanded to additional detection systems including the use of audio technology” to aid in automatic removals.

    In response to social media’s role in the shooting, some have pledged to boycott Facebook and Google, including advertisers in New Zealand. Burger King, ASB Bank and telecommunications company Spark New Zealand, among others, have all reportedly banded together to pull advertising from the tech giants to make a statement, the New Zealand Herald reported.

    In a joint statement Monday, the Association of New Zealand Advertisers and the Commercial Communications Council called on businesses to consider where and how their advertising dollars are being spent and said they would “challenge Facebook and other platform owners to immediately take steps to effectively moderate hate content before another tragedy can be streamed online.”

    “The events in Christchurch raise the question, if the site owners can target consumers with advertising in microseconds, why can’t the same technology be applied to prevent this kind of content being streamed live?” the industry organizations said.

    Other individual Facebook users have also pledged to boycott the platform. One woman from Tauranga, New Zealand, is leading a 50-hour Facebook blackout in memory of the 50 victims, the New Zealand Herald reported. The blackout will begin at 1:40 p.m. local time Friday, the same time the gunman started broadcasting live on Facebook last week.

    A spokeswoman for Facebook declined to answer additional questions from The Washington Post regarding the spread of the video, citing instructions from New Zealand police to limit available details.

    “We remain shocked and saddened by this tragedy and are committed to working with leaders in New Zealand, other governments, and across the technology industry to help counter hate speech and the threat of terrorism,” Sonderby said in the statement on Monday. “We continue to work around the clock to prevent this content from appearing on our site, using a combination of technology and people.”

    Virtually the same day as the New Zealand bloodbath, Muslim militants entered a church in the Philippines and mowed down 20 Christians. That same week Muslims in Nigeria slaughtered 85 evangelical Christians – for being Christians – an atrocity that received little attention in the West.

    Although the massacres in the New Zealand mosques were carried out by a shooter who described himself as an admirer of Communist China and identified his motive as seeking to sow dissension in the United States, progressives seized on the incident to blame President Trump and his alleged anti-Muslim policies for inciting the attack. At New York University, leftwing students extended this ludicrous and repulsive over-reach to include Chelsea Clinton, whom they said “stoked” the “Islamophobia” that led to the attack when she criticized the anti-Semitic remarks of Muslim Brotherhood adviser and Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

    Under Obama, conservative accusations of socialism were met with media protests that it wasn’t really socialism. Are we socialist yet?

    “I favor the public ownership of utilities, banks and major industries,” Sanders said in one interview with the Burlington Free Press in 1976.

    After moving to Vermont in 1968 several years after graduating college, Sanders became an active member of the left-wing Liberty Union Party. Under the Liberty Union banner, Sanders, then in his early 30s, ran for governor of Vermont in 1972 and 1976 and as a candidate for US Senate in 1972 and 1974. Sanders, also served as chairman of the party from 1973-1975. During this time, Sanders and Liberty Union argued for nationalization of the energy industry, public ownership of banks, telephone, electric, and drug companies and of the major means of production such as factories and capital, as well as other proposals such as a 100% income tax on the highest income earners in America.

    In 1973, during his time as chairman of the Liberty Union Party, Sanders took to a Vermont paper to oppose Richard Nixon’s energy policy and oil industry profits, calling for the entire energy industry to be nationalized. Consumers at the time had been facing steep price increases and heavy shortages as a result of the OPEC oil embargo.

    “I would also urge you to give serious thought about the eventual nationalization of these gigantic companies,” Sanders wrote in a December 1973 open letterto Vermont Sen. Robert Stafford that ran in the Vermont Freeman. “It is extremely clear that these companies, owned by a handful of billionaires, have far too much power over the lives of Americans to be left in private hands. The oil industry, and the entire energy industry, should be owned by the public and used for the public good — not for additional profits for billionaires.”

    In 1976, Sanders went even further: calling for the state to seize ownership of Vermont’s private electric companies without compensation to investors. He defended his proposals routinely by pointing out that municipally owned utilities, not uncommon throughout the country, often had lower consumer prices.

    I will be campaigning in support of the Liberty Union utility proposal which calls for the public ownership of Vermont’s private electric companies without compensation to the banks and wealthy stockholders who own the vast majority of stock in these companies,” he said in a July 1976 press release. “I will also be calling for public ownership of the telephone company — which is probably the single greatest rip-off company in America.”

    Sanders’ plan would require large businesses attempting to leave cities to get permission from the towns and the workers in them. If the company did not get that approval they would be required by law to pay a guaranteed two years of severance for workers and 10 years of taxes for the town.

    Nationally, Sanders said, legislation corporations leaving cities would have to be dealt with by turning the means of production over to the workers.

    Asked about healthcare, Sanders said there would need to be publicly-controlled drug companies.

    “I believe in socialized medicine, public ownership of the drug companies and placing doctors on salaries. The idea that millionaires can make money by selling poor people drugs that they desperately need for highly inflated prices disgusts me,” he said.

    Occam’s Razor is sharp and unrelenting. It cuts conspiracy theories into little pieces.

    The answer to ‘whodunit’ is usually the most obvious suspect with the means to do it.

    But Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the universe, and the boss of Amazon, the owner of the Washington Post and its many ‘journalists’ and minions, began pushing the claim that the National Enquirer had only published the story of his affair as part of a Trump/Saudi conspiracy having to do with Islamist terror hack Jamal Khashoggi. Bezos tried to portray himself as a hero for “standing up” to the Enquirer.

    The media, always in love with a good Trump conspiracy theory, quickly joined in. The Enquirer, a major media target, was accused of doing Trump’s bidding.

    Now the Wall Street Journal, which lately has stepped in to perform acts of journalism, clearing away the media’s nonsense from a simple story, did it again.

  50. Pompeo Pounces on the International Criminal Court

    U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Friday new U.S. visa restrictions on those individuals directly responsible for any International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation of U.S. personnel in connection with U.S. and allied military and intelligence activities in Afghanistan. The ICC prosecutor had previously requested approval from the ICC’s judges to launch a formal investigation into what the prosecutor called the “situation in Afghanistan.” That request is still pending.

    Secretary Pompeo warned all those working for the ICC that “if you’re responsible for the proposed ICC investigation of U.S. personnel in connection with the situation in Afghanistan, you should not assume that you will still have or will get a visa, or that you will be permitted to enter the United States.”

    Secretary Pompeo added that the “visa restrictions will not be the end of our efforts. We are prepared to take additional steps, including economic sanctions if the ICC does not change its course.” Secretary Pompeo said that the Trump administration, which has already begun to implement the visa restrictions, would also use such visa restrictions “to deter ICC efforts to pursue allied personnel, including Israelis, without allies’ consent.”

    The president of the Assembly of States Parties, the management oversight and legislative body of the ICC established by the Rome Statute treaty, responded that “the States Parties reconfirmed their unwavering support for the Court as an independent and impartial judicial institution, and reiterated their commitment to uphold and defend the principles and values enshrined in the Rome Statute and to preserve its integrity undeterred by any threats against the Court, its officials and those cooperating with it. This unwavering support continues today.”
