Contributor’s Links post for February 14th, 2019

Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

One of three schoolgirls who left east London in 2015 to join the Islamic State group says she has no regrets, but wants to return to the UK.
In an interview with the Times, Shamima Begum, now 19, talked about seeing “beheaded heads” in bins – but said that it “did not faze her”.
Speaking from a refugee camp in Syria, she said she was nine months pregnant and wanted to come home for her baby.
She said she’d had two other children who had both died.
She also described how one of her two school friends that had left the UK with her had died in a bombing. The fate of the third girl is unclear.
Bethnal Green Academy pupils Ms Begum and Amira Abase were both 15, while Kadiza Sultana was 16, when they left the UK in February 2015.
They flew from Gatwick Airport to Turkey after telling their parents they were going out for the day. They later crossed the border into Syria.
After arriving in Raqqa, she stayed at a house with other newly arrived brides-to-be, she told the Times.
“I applied to marry an English-speaking fighter between 20 and 25 years old,” she said.
Ten days later she married a 27-year-old Dutch man who had converted to Islam.
She has been with him since then, and the couple escaped from Baghuz – the group’s last territory in eastern Syria – two weeks ago.
Her husband surrendered to a group of Syrian fighters as they left, and she is now one of 39,000 people in a refugee camp in northern Syria.
Asked by Times journalist Anthony Loyd whether her experiences of living in the one-time IS stronghold of Raqqa had lived up to her aspirations, Ms Begum said: “Yes, it did. It was like a normal life. The life that they show on the propaganda videos – it’s a normal life.
“Every now and then there are bombs and stuff. But other than that…”
She said that seeing her first “severed head” in a bin “didn’t faze me at all”.
“It was from a captured fighter seized on the battlefield, an enemy of Islam.
“I thought only of what he would have done to a Muslim woman if he had the chance,” she said.
“I’m not the same silly little 15-year-old schoolgirl who ran away from Bethnal Green four years ago,” she told Mr Loyd.
    “I don’t regret coming here.”

Will Shamima Begum be allowed to return to UK?
BBC home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford
There is a distinction between those who have been actual fighters and have been involved in atrocities themselves. In the case of some of them, the British government has removed their British citizenship and they are effectively stateless.
The British government has been quite clear that it does not want them to come back to Britain.
Then there are those who went to join the IS group as supporters – and Shamima Begum fits into that category.
The British government has said it won’t help them out of northern Syria but if they manage to get to a place where there is a recognised government then they’ll see what they can do.
It is unclear at the moment as to quite what that might be. Security minister Ben Wallace has suggested that, in those situations, the British government would at least consider helping them to come home, but then there’s the possibility of prosecution and a jail sentence for supporting a terrorist group.
But Ms Begum said the “oppression” had come as a “shock” and said she felt the IS “caliphate” was at an end.
“I don’t have high hopes. They are just getting smaller and smaller,” she said. “And there is so much oppression and corruption going on that I don’t really think they deserve victory.”
She referred to her husband having been held in a prison where men were tortured.

    • VICE NEWS -AUGUST 2015 – The Girls Who Fled To Syria: Groomed By The Islamic State

In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain.

The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves.

VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it’s like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones.

  3. Germany: Syrian threatens tenants of a residential building — special police task force had to intervene+++
Today, Wednesday, about 3 p.m. there was a police operation at Wilkenberg area in Meinerzhagen. The residents of the house complained that there was an aggressive man on the upper floor who was threatening the residents of the house. The 26-year-old Syrian, who has only lived for two days in the apartment building where he was quartered by the local authorities, became increasingly verbally aggressive with the arrival of the policemen and threatened the officers. He threw objects out of the window and often appeared armed with knives at the windows. An Arabic-speaking interpreter tried to appease him and persuade him to give up. When these attempts failed as well, the special police task force that was called in at 6 p.m. overwhelmed the criminal in his apartment. He was slightly injured and then taken to the Hellersen Clinic following his arrest. The investigations into the motive situation continue.

  5. Mike Pence claims Iran’s mullahs are plotting a ‘new Holocaust’ that would ‘erase Israel from the map’ as he urges European Union nations to withdraw from Obama-era nuclear deal

Vice President Mike Pence told a conference of European and Middle East leaders on Thursday that Iran is plotting to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth, and seeks to unleash a ‘new Holocaust.’

With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu watching, Pence said in Poland that Tehran poses ‘the greatest threat to peace and security’ in the region.

Hours earlier, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that ‘confronting Iran’ is a necessary step for any nation that wants to ‘achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.’

‘The three H’s — the Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah — these are real threats … you can’t get peace in the Middle East without pushing back against Iran,’ Pompeo said, referring to the Islamic regime’s proxies in Yemen, in Lebanon and in Syria and Iraq.

The U.S. and Poland cooperated in organizing the two-day conference in Warsaw.

  6. New Democratic bloc’s push left unsettles party

WASHINGTON – A new generation of Democrats is using far-reaching policy ideas and a brash social media presence to upend the party – pushing it to the left on divisive issues such as health care and climate change while it charts a path aimed at taking the White House in 2020.

But the liberal shift, and the lawmakers driving it, are also creating challenges for Democrats in more-conservative areas, and they are giving President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans fresh opportunities for political attacks. The GOP has been particularly focused in recent days on hammering Democrats over draft details of a broad “Green New Deal” proposal, even if most Democrats have not directly endorsed the fine print.

  7. Howard Schultz rips the ‘Green New Deal’: ‘It’s not realistic’

Possible independent presidential candidate and Democratic spoiler Howard Schultz on Tuesday dumped on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ “Green New Deal,” warning it would be “immoral” to spend trillions of dollars on an “unrealistic” solution.

The billionaire former Starbucks CEO and executive chairman urged Democrats to be “truthful” about their environmental initiatives rather than just throwing policies “against the wall because it’s a good slogan.”

“I read that by 2030 they’re suggesting that every building in America becomes clean energy, conforms to clean energy, just to put that in perspective, because it’s not realistic, that would mean that between 2,000 and 3,000 buildings a day would have to be reconstructed to conform to what they’re saying,” Schultz said. “So let’s be sensible about what we’re suggesting,”

  8. Top US admiral in Middle East warns of growing Iranian threat

(CNN)Iran is in possession of improved and dangerous weapons systems that give Tehran the ability to threaten some of the world’s most important waterways, according to the top American admiral in the Middle East.
“They have a growing capability in cruise missiles, they have a growing capability in ballistic missiles, they have a growing capability in unmanned surfaced systems, all these things that we watch that are offensive, and destabilizing in nature,” Vice Adm. James Malloy, the commander of US Naval Forces Central Command, told a small group of reporters in Bahrain on Wednesday.
Unmanned surface systems, which can include explosive boats designed to target enemy vessels, have concerned US officials for some time, particularly after Iranian-backed Houthi rebels based in Yemen used such a boat to attack a vessel that belonged to Saudi Arabia.

  9. Netanyahu: Meetings in Warsaw With Arab Leaders to Combat Iran

WARSAW, Poland—Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, in what could be a possible gaffe, that his meetings with Arab leaders in Poland are “in order to advance the common interest of combating Iran.”

The comments were made to reporters on the sidelines of the Warsaw Middle East ministerial following Netanyahu’s meeting with the Sultanate of Oman’s Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi.

“Here I am going to a meeting with 60 foreign ministers and envoys of countries from around the world against Iran,” Netanyahu said. “What is important about this meeting—and this meeting is not in secret, because there are many of those—is that this is an open meeting with representatives of leading Arab countries, that are sitting down together with Israel in order to advance the common interest of combating Iran.”

“What we are doing is pushing and driving Iran from Syria,” Netanyahu added. “We are committed to doing this.”

  10. Migrants From ‘Hijacked’ Ship Take Salvini to European Human Rights Court (breitbart, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/02/14/migrants-formerly-aboard-hijacked-ship-take-salvini-european-court/

“Two migrants who were aboard a ship that saw rescued migrants threaten crew members have opened a case against Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini over tweets they claim could jeopardise their right to a fair trial.

The migrant pair, a Sudanese and a Ghanian, are currently under investigation for threats, violence, and resistance toward a public official and are awaiting their prosecution and trial over their role in the alleged hijacking, Il Giornale reports.

The incident, which took place last year in July, saw African migrants threaten to kill the crew of the Vos Thalassa vessel after the Libyan coastguard attempted to bring them back to Libya. The crew described the situation as going from “rescue to piracy” with the migrants forcing the crew to chart a course north to Italy.

Those onboard the Vos Thalassa were then transferred to the Diciotti which was allowed to dock but the migrants were barred from landing by Salvini until a redistribution agreement was made with other European countries.

The two migrants have decided to take their case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) claiming that social media posts made by Interior Minister Salvini and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Danilo Toninelli could affect their right to a free and fair trial.

“Before granting any authorisation, I wait to know the names, surnames and nationalities of the violent hijackers, who will have to get off the ship Diciotti in handcuffs,” Salvini wrote at the time on Twitter while Toninelli wrote, “now investigations to punish the troublemakers,” in reference to the incident on the Vos Thalassa.

Salvini could also be facing his own court case as a result of the Diciotti affair as prosecutors recently decided to reopen the possibility of charges against the Interior Minister for kidnapping and abuse of power.”

  11. Brexit Attack Swedish Minister Claims Democracy ‘in Decline’ Due to Rise of Populism (breitbart, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/02/14/swedish-minister-claims-democracy-decline-rise-populism/

“Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström has claimed democracy across the globe is “in decline” and has said the Swedish government will push for an “offensive for democracy” in Europe.

Wallström said the Swedish government would be developing a new programme to hold populist member states to account over what she believes to be a decline in democracy and European values, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

“To meet the development, we are now starting an offensive for democracy. We want to do this jointly with the Riksdag, and we shall work to ensure that more countries join. The offensive will be noticed in all our foreign policy,” Wallström said.

The minister added that Sweden will make certain demands on member states to make sure they respect both democracy and the rule of law and work on pushing for global nuclear disarmament. She also noted that the Foreign Ministry would continue its feminist foreign policy, as well.

Wallström’s comments come just weeks after she attacked Brexit, calling the decision by British politicians to allow their own people to have a referendum on membership of the European Union unforgivable.

The globalist politician said in January: “I just think that they’ve made such a historical mistake and they’ve really created a problem for all of us… You know what? This is because of bad political leadership since a very long time in the UK I saw with all my years from the European Commission… there was nobody who would defend their [UK] EU membership.”

The foreign policy of the Swedish government under Minister Wallström has not come without its controversies. Conservative Christian Democrats MP Lars Adaktusson noted the fact that Wallström was not welcome in the state of Israel and asked the minister about the relations between the two countries which soured in 2016.

Wallstöm’s attack on populism was followed by Swedish liberal journalist Sofia Nerbrand who reacted to a new programme in Hungary meant to increase the country’s birthrate saying Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán should be “ashamed” of the policy.

“Viktor Orbán’s stated goal is that the Hungarian population should grow larger with the help of white Hungarian babies — not immigrants,” she wrote and added, ” Viktor Orbán should really be ashamed.”

Nerbrand also compared the policy to the Blut und Boden (blood and soil) policy of Nazi Germany and said, “Rhetoric and politics that reward their own people and shut out others should not have a place in today’s Europe.””

  12. Google, Facebook Forced to Pay Creators Under New EU Rules

(Bloomberg) — Online platforms will be required to compensate publishers and creators for the content that appears on their websites, under new European Union copyright rules that could shrink access to online media in Europe.

The new rules mean music producers and publishers could come gunning for more money from Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc. to compensate for the display of their songs, video and news articles.

If artists and music producers refuse to grant platforms licenses, tech firms will be required to remove or block uploads. And if platforms don’t negotiate licenses with publishers, or if publishers don’t waive their rights, web firms won’t be able to display longer fragments of news articles under headlines.

The rules “will enable creators to be remunerated fairly by large online platforms that today are siphoning the value of the creative sector while failing to compensate creators,” said Veronique Desbrosses, Director General of GESAC, a European umbrella association of authors and composers.

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/10-indian-soldiers-killed-20-wounded-blast-kashmir-61070277

“At least 12 soldiers were killed and 40 others wounded Thursday in a car bomb attack on a paramilitary convoy along a key highway in Indian-controlled Kashmir, security officials said.

Senior police officer Muneer Ahmed Khan said the attack occurred as the convoy reached Pampore on the outskirts of the disputed region’s main city of Srinagar. He said one bus was destroyed and at least five other vehicles were damaged by the blast.

A paramilitary official said the destroyed bus was carrying at least 35 soldiers.

Authorities blamed rebels fighting against Indian rule for the attack.

Khan said soldiers and counterinsurgency police reinforcements were deployed in the area.

Sanjay Sharma, a spokesman for India’s paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force, said many of the injured were in critical condition. “The blast was so powerful that one cannot recognize whether the vehicle was a bus or a truck. Just pieces of mangled steel remain of the vehicle,” he said.

The Greater Kashmir newspaper reported that militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack. It quoted a local news gathering agency as saying a militant rammed an explosive-laden car into the convoy…”

  14. Roadside bomb kills 8 militia fighters north of Baghdad (abcnews, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/roadside-bomb-kills-militia-fighters-north-baghdad-61071960

“An Iraqi security official says a roadside bomb has exploded north of Baghdad, killing eight fighters from a militia headed by an influential Shiite Muslim cleric.

Thursday’s ambush was confirmed by a spokesman with the Peace Brigades, or Saraya al-Salam militia, which is commanded by Muqtada al-Sadr. They both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The militia spokesman said among those killed was a militia commander, Hussein Attiyeh.

The ambush occurred west of the holy city of Samarra, some 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of the capital Baghdad.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Al-Sadr’s political coalition came first in last year’s May elections.”

  15. DHILLON: Microsoft Wants To Pick The News You Read

Controlling what news voters do and do not receive has become a big focus in the digital age. Mainstream media giants and establishment political operatives alike have long fought to stigmatize, discredit, and censor any news that doesn’t fit their agendas.

Now a familiar player is getting into the censorship game: Microsoft just announced that the tech giant’s Edge web browser will feature a “NewsGuard” plugin that will display a big red exclamation mark and a scolding warning when users view news outlets its censors dislike. Media outlets hand-selected by NewsGuard and Microsoft, on the other hand, will get a big friendly green check mark and flattering praise of their journalistic merit.

Who are the approved “green check mark” news sources? The left-leaning, establishment media outlets you would expect: CNN, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, and so on. These are the same sites that rushed to publish dozens of demonstrably false stories about Catholic high schoolers harassing a Vietnam veteran — and wound up putting those teenagers and their families in the crosshairs of a vicious internet hate mob — and then, largely refused to apologize for getting the story completely wrong.

    https://dailycaller.com/2019/02/12/dhillon-microsoft-news/

Richard: Until FOX News and later the internet the left controlled the vast majority of the news sources. This control is the reason so many people think all conservatives are racists who oppose freedom and rights for everyone. Now Microsoft is working to re-establish that dominance in telling people what is happening, their liberal spin is going to be dangerous.

  17. France: UN experts denounce severe rights restrictions on “gilets jaunes” protesters (ohchr, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=24166&LangID=E

“The right to protest in France has been disproportionately curtailed during the recent “gilets jaunes” protests and the authorities should rethink their law enforcement policies to guarantee the exercise of freedoms, say a group of UN human rights experts*.

“Since the start of the yellow vest protest movement in November 2018, we have received serious allegations of excessive use of force. More than 1,700 people have been injured as a result of the protests across the country,” the experts said.

“The restrictions on rights have also resulted in a high number of arrests and detentions, searches and confiscations of demonstrators’ possessions, and serious injuries have been caused by a disproportionate use of so-called ‘non-lethal’ weapons like grenades and defensive bullets or ‘flashballs’,” they added.

“Ensuring public order and security in the context of crowd management or event management measures implies the need to respect and protect protesters who peacefully participate in a demonstration to express themselves,” the experts stressed.

“We are aware that some demonstrations have become violent and have spilled over but we fear that the disproportionate response to these excesses may deter the population from continuing to exercise its fundamental freedoms. It is very disturbing to note that despite weeks of demonstrations, the restrictions and tactics of managing rallies and the use of force have not improved.”

The experts also expressed deep concern about a proposed law claiming to prevent violence during demonstrations and to punish the perpetrators, pointing out that some of the provisions of this law are not in line with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which France is a Party.

“The proposed administrative ban on demonstrations, the establishment of additional control measures and the imposition of heavy sanctions constitute severe restrictions on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly. These provisions can be applied arbitrarily and lead to extremely serious abuses,” the experts emphasized.

“We encourage France to rethink its law enforcement policies and encourage the French authorities to establish avenues for dialogue to reduce tension and to recognize the important and legitimate role that social movements play in governance,” the experts said…”

  18. Nearly 1,000 Madagascar children dead of measles since October: WHO (reuters, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-madagascar-measles/nearly-1000-madagascar-children-dead-of-measles-since-october-who-idUSKCN1Q3246

“At least 922 children and young adults have died of measles in Madagascar since October, despite a huge emergency vaccination program, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

The number of deaths is based on official numbers, but these are likely to be very incomplete, as is the current total of infections, at 66,000, Dr. Katrina Kretsinger of WHO’s expanded program on immunisation told a news briefing.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause complications including blindness and brain swelling and increase susceptibility to other diseases.

The Indian Ocean island is among Africa’s poorest countries, and in 2017 only 58 percent of the population had been vaccinated against measles. The lack of a big outbreak since 2003 also means many have had no chance to develop immunity.

An emergency response has vaccinated 22 million of the 26 million population so far, Kretsinger said. Even those who had previously been vaccinated had only received one shot, and so were given the more standard second, “booster” jab.

“We believe that that should go a long way towards stemming the current outbreak,” she added.

Madagascar has Africa’s highest children’s malnutrition rate, at 47 percent. The condition can increase the risk of serious complications and death from measles infection, the WHO says.

The disease can also leave children vulnerable to potentially fatal pneumonia or diarrhoeal diseases months later, said Katherine O’Brien, WHO director of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals.

“The remains of about 150 bodies were found on Thursday near the former Islamic State (ISIS) capital in Syria, Raqqa. Reports were from sources on the ground who say that a mass grave has been discovered with over a thousand bodies that have not yet been dug up. The forensic experts working in the Kurdish-Syrian semi-autonomous area say that the mass grave is split into two parts and is south of the Euphrates.

The sources say that the 150 bodies dug up so far have not yet been identified. They are most likely victims of ISIS, which controlled the region from 2014 to 2017. The forensic experts say that there are the remains of between 1,000 and 1,500 people and that days will be needed to dig up the corpses. After months of requests from local and international organizations, the search for mass graves in Raqqa finally began a few weeks ago.”

  20. US-backed Syrian fighters battle to clear final two IS villages (BBC, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-47238717

“US-backed Syrian fighters are clearing Islamic State (IS) militants from the last two villages the jihadist group controls, military officials say.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance launched an assault at the weekend on Shajalah and Baghuz, near Syria’s border with Iraq.

The last militants remaining there are reportedly retreating and hiding among the local population.

Some have sought to escape among the hundreds of civilians fleeing on foot.

“Amongst those arriving to be screened are the wives of [IS] fighters, some of whom sustained gunshot wounds while fleeing from [IS],” said Maj Gen Christopher Ghika, a spokesman for the US-led multinational coalition supporting the SDF.

“These utterly despicable and ghastly acts further illustrate their barbaric nature and desperation as [IS] struggles to hold on to their remaining territory.”.

SDF spokesman Adnan Afrin said the militants still wanting to fight were putting up “significant resistance” in an attempt to slow the clearance operation.

“There are many tunnels in Baghuz now. This is why the operation is dragging on,” he told AFP news agency. “There are many suicide bombers attacking our positions with explosives-laden cars and motorbikes.”

US-led coalition aircraft are carrying out strikes on IS positions inside the village and special forces are on the ground to advise SDF commanders.

The IS fighters’ wives who have fled have been taken to SDF-run camps for displaced people. Among them are many foreign nationals, including the British teenager Shamima Begum, who ran away from her home in 2015 to join IS.

Ms Begum, 19, told the Times newspaper on Wednesday that she had no regrets but wanted to come back to the UK as she was nine months pregnant…”

McCabe confirms he opened the investigation into Trump

    • NYT – McCabe Says Justice Officials Discussed Recruiting Cabinet Members to Push Trump Out of Office

WASHINGTON — Andrew G. McCabe, the former deputy F.B.I. director, said in an interview aired on Thursday that top Justice Department officials were so alarmed by President Trump’s decision in May 2017 to fire James B. Comey, the bureau’s director, that they discussed whether to recruit cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office.

The concerns about the president’s actions also prompted Mr. McCabe to order the bureau’s team investigating Russia’s election interference to expand their scope to also investigate whether Mr. Trump had obstructed justice by firing Mr. Comey. They also were to examine if he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests.

Mr. McCabe’s remarks were made in an interview on “60 Minutes” scheduled to air on Sunday. He was promoting his memoir, “The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump,” which will be released next week.

Mr. McCabe said he spoke to Mr. Trump just after Mr. Comey was fired, and the next day he met with the team investigating Russia’s election interference.

“I was very concerned that I was able to put the Russia case on absolutely solid ground, in an indelible fashion,” Mr. McCabe said. “That were I removed quickly, or reassigned or fired, that the case could not be closed or vanish in the night without a trace.”

On the eve of his retirement in March 2018, Mr. McCabe was fired by Jeff Sessions, the attorney general at the time, citing lack of candor.

“I wanted to make sure that our case was on solid ground and if somebody came in behind me and closed it and tried to walk away from it, they would not be able to do that without creating a record of why they made that decision,” Mr. McCabe said.

Mr. Trump appeared to react to the interview, attacking Mr. McCabe and his wife, both frequent targets of Mr. Trump, via Twitter.

      — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 14, 2019

As a clip from the interview with Scott Pelley was released, Mr. Pelley said on “CBS This Morning” that Mr. McCabe had confirmed a New York Times report that the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, had suggested wearing a wire in meetings with Mr. Trump and that Justice Department officials discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office.

“There were meetings at the Justice Department at which it was discussed whether the vice president and a majority of the cabinet could be brought together to remove the president of the United States under the 25th Amendment,” Mr. Pelley said. “These were the eight days from Comey’s firing to the point that Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel. And the highest levels of American law enforcement were trying to figure out what do with the president.”

Former law enforcement officials said the comments were made during a pair of meetings on May 16, 2017. Mr. McCabe and his former colleagues kept contemporaneous memos on their interactions with Mr. Trump and Justice Department officials.

According to one of those memos written by Mr. McCabe, an excerpt from which was provided to The New York Times, the former F.B.I. agent wrote that “we discussed the president’s capacity and the possibility he could be removed from office under the 25th Amendment” and the deputy attorney general indicated he looked into the issue and determined he would need a “majority or 8 of the 15 cabinet officials.” Mr. McCabe added that Mr. Rosenstein suggested that he might have supporters in the attorney general and secretary of Homeland Security.

Mr. Rosenstein had disputed the account about the wire and the 25th Amendment.

A former Justice Department official who was present at the time when Mr. Rosenstein proposed wearing a wire said the deputy attorney general had made the remark sarcastically. The Justice Department provided an anonymous comment from the official. But Mr. McCabe said the idea came up repeatedly and was taken seriously,Mr. Pelley said.

Mr. McCabe is the first person involved in these meetings who has spoken publicly about them.

Mr. Pelley said, “They were counting noses. They were not asking cabinet members whether they would vote for or against removing the president, but they were speculating ‘This person would be with us, this person would not be,’ and they were counting noses in that effort.”

“This was not perceived to be a joke,” Mr. Pelley added.

In a statement released on Thursday morning in the wake of the interview with Mr. Pelley, a Justice Department spokeswoman said: “The deputy attorney general again rejects Mr. McCabe’s recitation of events as inaccurate and factually incorrect.”

The spokeswoman added that as Mr. Rosenstein “has stated, based on his personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment, nor was the deputy attorney general in a position to consider invoking the 25th Amendment.”

  22. Islamic ‘Sunday School’ Told Girls to Have Children Instead of Careers (breitbart, Feb 14, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/02/14/islamic-sunday-school-told-girls-have-children-instead-careers/

“A school in Slough will no longer rent space to a madrassa after it was revealed it taught Muslim girls they should have children instead of careers and hosted speakers at events who had described non-Muslims as “pigs.”

The Langley Academy has terminated its contract with the Al-Miftah Institute, which provided ‘IslamHood’ Sunday school classes in its school buildings, following complaints from a member of the public and the National Secular Society (NSS) which said that the group was hosting “extremist speakers” whose messages contradict “fundamental British values.”

The school has been renting premises for the group’s ‘Youth Tarbiya Weekend School’ on Sundays which delivered an “Islamic curriculum for 7-18 year olds” which included Quran recitation and “Islamic Sciences,” according to the NSS.

A spokesman for the school told The Telegraph, “We fully support the government’s Prevent Strategy. Therefore we take any allegations that extremist views or ideology might be being promoted on our premises extremely seriously. We were deeply concerned when a complaint was first raised with the Trust about IslamHood’s Weekend School in December.

“We have carried out an in-depth investigation and the lettings agreement with IslamHood has been terminated with immediate effect.”

In one IslamHood class, Shaykh Shams Ad-Duha Muhammad said “smart career women give it up to have children,” and was said to have told female pupils at the Slough and Eton School in 2015 that those women who do not have children should “say sorry because you’re not a mum, because you’re delaying that one thing that you would actually take fulfilment from.”

The group was also accused of gender segregation, after photographs in IslamHood’s prospectus showed girls standing together behind the boys, the picture taken inside Langley Academy, as reported by the newspaper.

Dr Paul Stott of The Henry Jackson Society said, “IslamHood’s teaching on the role of women is sexist and risks girls never achieving their full potential. Langley Academy should have conducted due diligence at the outset. This type of response needs to become the norm across the public sector.”

The National Secular Society raised concern over the group’s activities to the Langley Academy and highlighted in January that IslamHood had hosted speakers “such as Imran Ibn Mansur and Haitham al-Haddad, both widely regarded as advocates of extremist forms of Islam.”

Mansur had appeared at a 2015 IslamHood conference, implying to its young attendants that those who were friends with others who were not observant Muslims would burn in hell. In a 2017 Facebook video, he had referred to non-Muslims as “infidels,” “pigs,” and “kuffar” (derogatory term for non-believer).

Al-Haddad had spoke about non-Muslims being thrown into the fiery pits of hell at an IslamHood lecture in 2014 and is known to have expressed approval of child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and the stoning to death of adulterers.

This is just the most recent case of children being exposed to those who espouse Islamic extremism in settings where they are meant to be safe…”

  25. With Ilhan Omar, the real focus is the Democratic leadership
    By J.E. Dyer February 14, 2019

In a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) had an exchange with veteran diplomat Elliott Abrams that has to be seen to be believed. Abrams was recently appointed as special envoy for Venezuela and was at the House committee hearing to discuss that topic.

It is precise and fair to say that Omar attacked Abrams, suggesting outright that his testimony could not be trusted, alleging that he was complicit in “genocide” in the 1980s, and demanding the radical left’s patented “yes or no!” answers to absurdly loaded questions. This is the last sentences of her article in the article she explained what happened and how she had underestimated Omar and apologized for this.

I don’t disagree with J.E. very often but this time I do, what Omar did was exactly what the Dems did in the Kavanagh hearing and what they have done to members of the Trump Administratin during questioning on policy actions the Dems dislike. This is what the Dems want our Congressional discussions to be because they can depend on the Propaganda Media to spin things to make it look like the Dems are the victims not the attackers.

The Dems will use this to try and justify their actions in starting the civil war they have worked so hard to foment.

By LU Staff February 14, 2019

This Islamization of Britain is proceeding apace. In 2014, a non-Muslim mom claimed her 5-year-old daughter was not fed the lunch she had brought to daycare because it was not halal. In 2016 some thousand Muslims blocked London streets chanting Allahu Akbar, demanding an Islamic caliphate. In 2018 a Saudi newspaper boasted that London has 423 new mosques and 100 Shariah courts.

At least 40 Indian soldiers killed in Kashmir terror attack

SRINAGAR, INDIA (BLOOMBERG, AFP) – At least 40 Indian security force personnel were killed yesterday and many more injured in the most serious terrorist attack during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure.

They died when an improvised explosive device went off as a convoy of military vehicles drove on a highway outside Srinagar, the main city of Jammu and Kashmir, Asian News International (ANI) reported.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Deputy Inspector-General M. Dhinakaran confirmed at least one bus carrying 39 passengers was attacked as the convoy – which consisted of 77 vehicles and about 2,500 personnel – travelled through Pulwama district, 35 kilometers outside Srinagar.

Investigations are continuing into the exact number of dead and injured, he said.

CRPF spokesman Sanjay Kumar said that the explosives were inside a car, while local media reports said the explosive-laden vehicle was driven into the convoy.

“It was a powerful explosion. The explosive was car-borne,” officer Kumar told Agence France-Presse.

Unconfirmed photos showed the charred remains of at least one vehicle littered across the highway, alongside blue military buses as black smoke billowed upwards.

Local media reports said the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed Islamist group had claimed responsibility.

A spokesman for the group said the “suicide attack” was carried out by a militant called Aadil Ahmad, alias Waqas Commando, in a statement sent to local newspapers.

The last major car bombing, which killed 40 people – including three suicide attackers – was also carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed, in 2001.

The target of that attack was the local Parliament building in Srinagar.

Another car bomb attack also happened in Srinagar in March 2005, in which one civilian died and several soldiers were wounded.

Modi condemned the latest attack, calling it dastardly. “The sacrifices of our brave security personnel shall not go in vain. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of the brave martyrs,” Modi said in a tweet.

Senior government minister Arun Jaitley said in a tweet those responsible “will be given an unforgettable lesson for their heinous act.”

    ‘SURGICAL STRIKES’

Thursday’s attack was the deadliest on Indian forces in its part of Kashmir since September 2016, when 19 soldiers were killed in a pre-dawn raid by militants on the Uri army camp.

India blamed militants in Pakistan for that attack, the biggest in 14 years, and responded by carrying out strikes across the heavily militarised Line of Control, the de facto border dividing the nuclear-armed nations.

Indian officials said troops conducted the “surgical strikes” several kilometres inside the Pakistan-controlled side of the disputed territory to prevent attacks being planned on major Indian cities.

The strikes are a source of national pride for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and were the subject of a rousing recent Bollywood film, Uri: The Surgical Strike.

India has an estimated 500,000 soldiers in Kashmir, which has been divided between India and Pakistan since independence from Britain in 1947.

Rebel groups have been fighting for an independent Kashmir, or a merger with Pakistan, since 1989.

New Delhi accuses Pakistan of fuelling the insurgency that has left tens of thousands of civilians dead.

Islamabad denies the charge, saying it only provides diplomatic support to Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Thursday’s attack, which occurred in the run-up to India’s general elections, puts Modi in a difficult situation, said Abhijnan Rej, a New Delhi-based security analyst.

A limited response leaves him open to opposition accusations that he’s weak on national security, while a strong military reaction could lead to an escalation, and accusations that he’s mismanaged the Kashmir situation, he said

“There will be enormous pressure on him to do something,” Rej said. “Between this, the elections, the nature of the attack, and the situation in
Kashmir, this really complicates things for Modi.”

  30. BBC – London knife crime: ‘I don’t know how many people I’ve stabbed’

“I started carrying a knife when I was 12 because everyone was doing it at the time.

“To fit in more you had to do certain things so I started to stab people. I didn’t do it because I wanted to be bad.”

Robert Bragg was once heavily involved in the world of knife crime.

The 26-year-old served six years in prison for a range of gang-related crime and tells Radio 1 Newsbeat he believes tougher sentences would have encouraged him to change his ways a lot earlier.

He’s now part of a programme to encourage school children not to get involved with knife crime.

“I did it because I wanted the older lot to like me and because I thought it was the right thing to do at the time.

“To be honest with you, I’ve stabbed quite a lot of people.

“If I was to sit here and count I wouldn’t be able to. People remind me, to this day, about people I’ve stabbed that I don’t remember.

“We wanted to be bad – look bad, become the gang that everyone feared. We had to carry out a lot of violent crimes to become that gang.

“Giving tougher sentences will prevent people from carrying knives because nobody wants to go to jail for 10 or 15 years just for carrying a knife.”

The number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales last year was the highest since records began in 1946, official figures show.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has been speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat about new laws he says are needed to stop social media being used to fuel knife crime.

“In London it’s normal,” says Robert, who now works for a charity that works in schools to highlight the dangers of being in a gang.

“It’s just one of them things: you wake up, you have your breakfast, you stab someone.

“It’s mad because we’re not actually thinking about damaging a life.

“We don’t think we’re going to kill you.

“Knives have been pulled on me plenty of times.

“I’m very paranoid and I’m not in gang life no more.

“Because I’m not the same person I used to be I don’t carry a knife.

“I wanted to kill myself because I realised the gang life and gang culture was a lie.

“I realised it was just a deception and your boys aren’t really there for you.

    “They don’t really care.

“I didn’t want to be part of that life no more.

” I said to myself before I kill myself I’m going to try God and see if God has a plan for my life.

“I went to church one day and I lifted my hands and said: ‘God if you’re real, help me’.

“I was desperate enough to cry for help.

“Being a man, when I was growing up, I was told not to cry.

“For me that was a big thing because I was crying and I felt free.”

Like every disgraced Spygate figure, Andy McCabe has a book. And a media tour. He put in his contact lenses and he’s talking coup.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, speaking out in a new book and TV interview, detailed the central role he played in the bureau’s Russia probe and the eventual appointment of a special counsel — while reportedly describing Justice Department meetings where officials discussed ousting President Trump.

McCabe, who was fired from the bureau in March 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions after it was determined he lied to investigators about a leak, spoke to “60 Minutes” ahead of the release of his new book, “The Threat.” CBS News’ Scott Pelley revealed parts of the interview Thursday morning.

  33. Our Moderates, Their Leninists
The useful idiocy of Cautious Conservatives.

If I were a hard leftist, I would love thoughtful, responsible conservatives such as David Brooks. They’re so much more helpful than those sympathetic liberals at the Times, Atlantic Monthly, and NBC are.

“How We Destroy Lives Today.” That’s the title of the column Mr. Brooks wrote after the Covington Boys affair. That “We” certainly pleased the pushy progressives. It was exactly what they wanted our respectable commentators to say. Only for a moment did Mr. Brooks blame identity politics journalists and race advocates for demonizing the boy in the MAGA cap. Soon enough, he rose above the messy skirmish, looked down like a Hegelian sage upon it, and pronounced a general condition that implicates us all.

“In this case the facts happened to support the right-wing tribe,” Brooks admitted. “But that’s not the point. The crucial thing is that the nation’s culture is now enmeshed in a new technology that we don’t yet know how to control.”

You see, it’s the technology’s fault. And there’s another one of those universal “we” words. The furious denunciation of a teenager from Kentucky who merely stood still and smiled (was he gloating? was he nervous? who cares!) became the latest fiend of the race-scolds, but the conservative columnist didn’t judge the action a customary tactic of left. No, Brooks and other prudent rightists don’t want to identify in the DNA of the left anything accusatory and polarizing. Cautious Conservatives don’t point fingers and name names. That’s not their style. The rancid identity politics of the left caused this episode, but let’s not get bogged down in specifics. The properly conservative mind doesn’t get caught up in squabbles. It digs below the racial surface of the white boy face-to-face with the Indian elder and uncovers a condition that crosses political groups. Here, the Cautious Conservative tells us, we have fallen into the habit of setting upon one another, and next time it may just as easily be the right going after an innocent citizen with righteous glee as it was the left this time.

Prince Khalid noted that Saudi Arabia today joined some 70 countries at the Warsaw Summit to take a position to face the challenges that threaten the future of security and peace in the region, especially the Iranian regime.

He stressed that the Saudi leadership has always been working for human development and striving to improve the standard of living of citizens, so the per capita income in the Kingdom since 1979 has risen ten times, while it is declining by more than half in Iran, and the Kingdom’s gross domestic product (GDP) is double than that of Iran after they were equal in 1979.

“Saudi Arabia expressed regret on Thursday over the European Commission’s proposals to add it and six other countries to a money-laundering list of governments that do too little to thwart the financing of terrorism and organized crime.

The move is part of a crackdown on money laundering after several scandals at European Union banks, but it has been criticized by several EU countries, including Britain, that are worried about their economic relations with the listed states, notably Saudi Arabia. The United States has also disapproved this move.

In a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom said: “Saudi Arabia’s commitment to combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism is a strategic priority”.

Minister of Finance Mohammed Al-Jadaan said that Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fighting money laundering and terrorism financing is a strategic priority for the Kingdom. “We will continue to develop and enhance our regulatory framework to achieve this goal. We note the proposed revised list is subject to approval of both the European Parliament and Council of Ministers”.

Al-Jadaan called on the EC officials and members of the European Parliament to visit Riyadh and observe the continuous efforts and initiatives taken by the Kingdom at the local, regional and international levels in the fight against terrorism-financing, and money laundering.

“Saudi Arabia will continue to communicate with the Commission and looks forward to a constructive dialogue with its partners in the European Union to contribute to strengthening and supporting the means of countering money laundering and terrorism at the international and regional levels,” he said.

On his part, Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) Governor Ahmed Al- Kholifey said he did not expect the European Commission’s decision to add his country to a list of “high risk” countries to have any impact for now, Al-Arabiya reported…”
