House Democrats plan vast Russia probe
Mueller is just the beginning. House Democrats plan a vast probe of President Trump and Russia — with a heavy focus on money laundering — that will include multiple committees and dramatic public hearings, and could last into 2020.
The state of play: The aggressive plans were outlined yesterday by a Democratic member of Congress at a roundtable for Washington reporters. The member said Congress plans interviews with new witnesses, and may go back to earlier witnesses who “stonewalled” under the Republican majority.

Imagine Canada as a Tax Haven for Americans
(Bloomberg Opinion) — Taxes on rich Americans are probably going up if Democrats win both the presidency and Congress anytime soon. Whether it’s to provide revenue for more government spending on health care or the environment, or simply to reduce inequality, it seems likely that the well-off will pay more. The idea receives wide support:
Exactly which type of taxes would go up, and on which group of rich people, and by how much, remains to be seen. Prominent proposals include Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren’s plan for a 2 percent tax on wealth of more than $50 million and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s idea for a 70 percent tax rate on income of more than $10 million a year.
If and when taxes are raised, an interesting question is how those affected will respond. They can probably be expected to spend more on political campaigns to limit taxes. They will almost certainly engage in more intensive avoidance efforts.
But if that doesn’t work, the affluent could resort to the ultimate dodge — they could leave the country. This is one of the things that forced France to drop its “supertax” of 75 percent on incomes of more than 1 million euros ($1.13 million). That tax, which lasted from 2012 through 2014, caused rich people such as executive Bernard Arnault and actor Gerard Depardieu to move to neighboring Belgium, and made it hard for France to attract senior managers.

“Last week, a group of criminals called the ‘Stansted 15’ were sentenced for breaking into a secure airport and locking themselves around a chartered plane set to deport illegal immigrants to prevent its departure from Stansted. They were convicted under terrorism laws.
You would think they would have received a custodial sentence, no?
They received community service sentences. Basically, sentenced to a bit of sweeping up or gardening.
This country’s judicial system is a joke.
Leading up to the trial the left-wing media screeched: ‘a crushing blow for human rights in UK’ (Amnesty Intl)‘ ‘grave injustice’ and ‘malicious attack’ (Liberty), ‘controversial government charter deportation’ ‘convict the Stansted 15 will chill public’ and so on.
Over the past few years we have seen multiple attempts by social justice warriors to disrupt flights at UK major airports, whether its climate change scam pickets or making our country unsafe by stopping deportations.
This time these warriors are being charged with the more serious crime of endangering the safe operation/persons of an/at an aerodrome under the Aviation and Maritime Security Act, under terrorism related charges. Good, at last we thought our government was getting serious.
They were trying to prevent this country carrying out our laws so that the undocumented illegal immigrants were removed to Nigeria, Ghana and Sierre Leone.
Before sentencing, the BBC’s Today programme dedicated a whole segment to the trial and what kind of sentence would be handed down. The law under which they were convicted can carry a life sentence. The BBC’s chief reporter asked a lawyer whether this was likely. The tame lawyer replied, ‘highly unlikely’. A podcast interview with two of the convicted criminals is available for download. No doubt it will also be fed to the young audience the BBC is trying to attract via podcasts.
Who remembers when Tommy Robinson was arrested and charged with subverting the course of justice for the same crime? And jailed. Where was Amnesty International and Liberty?
There is no difference. Why is there one rule for the BBC and left-wing activism, disguised as journalism, and one rule for journalist Robinson?
These convicted criminals broke into an airport where armed officers were removed from security duties in the terminal to be deployed for this farce, making the airport more vulnerable at a time when the UK terrorism threat level was classed a ‘severe’. I travel a lot. I feel safe with armed officers protecting the public, not middle class warriors.
I find it a grave injustice and a malicious attack on the law-abiding travelling public that we were left vulnerable when a terror attack was at a ‘severe’ level.
I find it offensive that these criminals, disguised as social justice warriors, aided and abetted by Amnesty and Liberty, trot out the term ‘racism’. Who cares what race the illegal immigrants are, they’re still illegal.
Throughout the trial these criminals gave evidence that they were concerned about the ‘conditions in which the UK government enforces the hostile environment it has created’ for illegal immigrants. No, the British public require our government to keep us safe, to protect us at airports and other public spaces which are targeted by terrorists. There is no ‘hostile’ atmosphere around migration. We just want to control our borders and decide who comes here, not defend those that break into our country illegally, with the help of the human rights industry.
The criminals’ defenders also worry about the effect this trial will have on other protests ie anti-fracking, climate change, deportation or zero hours contracts. All worthy protests, if that’s what rocks your boat. But do it within the law, do not obstruct people going about their business, do not put our lives in danger for your pet projects. If you hold up flights for many hours, you stop contractors from fulfilling their daily contracts and paying their employees, that’s not peaceful protest, that harms ordinary peoples’ pay packets and business.
This wasn’t just about deportations. The group, Lesbians and Gays against Deportations were there, Plane Stupid and other protest groups. They have other agendas and enjoy a jolly good day out with their wealthy middle-class mates, this time they were stopped.
The lesbians were worried about a Ghanaian lesbian illegal immigrant woman who feared for her life because her ex-husband knew she was on her way home. Many men feel offended because their wives choose alternative lifestyles. It doesn’t entitle her to a passport.
The criminals have had a victory because the human rights industry has gone into overdrive.
It’s a victory for every Swampy, every SJW, all the great unwashed, the middle-class anarchists and the liberal left.
It’s a victory for the 11 illegal immigrants are now sitting in our jails, at huge taxpayer cost, appealing against their deportations. And the rest of them currently breaking into our country.
It’s a victory for the cash strapped and dwindling readership of the left-wing media, with no arrests for subverting the course of justice in writing and broadcasting about this on the day of sentencing.
It would have been a victory for the ordinary people, the Attorney General and the Home Secretary for at last doing their jobs, but they’ve got a long way to go to stop funding the human rights terrorists who work against keeping our country and borders safe. Perhaps the government can launch an appeal against these sentences that are not fit for purpose?
Next time you’re stuck in a traffic jam on the M25 at Heathrow or the A2 at City Airport, or caught up in a violent demonstration in central London, blame this lenient judge.

15 Years in Prison for Clicking on Terrorist Propaganda Even Once – New UK Law (sputniknews, Feb 13, 2019)

“Upon the adoption of a new legislation, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said that the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act “gives the police the powers they need to disrupt plots and punish those who seek to do us harm.”
The Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019 has received Royal Assent on 12 February, making the bill an Act of Parliament.
The act makes provision in relation to terrorism, enabling persons at ports and borders to be questioned for national security and updating the offence of obtaining information likely to be useful to a terrorist to cover material that is only viewed or streamed, rather than downloaded to form a permanent record.
The act sees to an increase to the maximum penalty for certain preparatory terrorism offences to 15 years’ imprisonment.
The UK government has been criticized by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy, Joe Cannataci, back in 2018. The inspector argued following his visit in the UK, that it was concerning that accessing propaganda “on three or more different occasions” was viewed as an offence. Cannataci called the approach straying towards “thought crime.”
The three-click benchmark has been removed in the new bill and now even a single tap on ‘terrorist material’ could lead to years in prison. Exemption is provided for journalists, academic researchers or people who had “no reason to believe” they were accessing terrorist propaganda.
The Bill has also provided for a launch of an independent review of Prevent, the much criticized government’s strategy that aims to support persons vulnerable to radicalisation.
British intelligence services were condemned in 2018 for failing to properly monitor individuals of interest — later to be involved in terrorist activity — not under active investigation at the moment but in the peripheries of more than one investigation.
In 2017, the United Kingdom suffered five terrorist attacks in Westminster, the Manchester Arena, London Bridge, Finsbury Park and Parsons Green, with 36 people losing their lives and dozens injured.”
Soldiers of Odin Declare Hunt for Rapists, Paedophiles Amid Finland Sex Attacks (sputniknews, Feb 13, 2019)

“The vigilantes’ recent video, in which they claimed Finland to be overrun by “sex tourists” has arrived amidst a grooming gang scandal which has implicated immigrants and asylum-seekers from the Middle East.
The Finnish police and the National Prosecutor General’s Office are investigating whether the new Soldiers of Odin video, in which they declare a hunt for rapists and paedophiles, constitutes hate speech and instigation to violence, the Finnish daily newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet reported.
In the video, which is provided with English and Arabic subtitles, the group claims that it has made false profiles in social media, posing as young girls. With the help of the profiles, the group seeks to reveal men in search of sexual contact with young girls on the web.
The video, which has since been deleted from both Facebook and Vimeo, shows a group of masked men armed with bats and chains march onwards to the camera amid winter darkness, accompanied by heavy metal music. The speaker of the group then claims Finland has been invaded by “sex tourists”. As the authorities “do nothing”, he claims, the people themselves have to protect their children. The Soldiers of Odin also claimed that half of the sexual propositions to underage girls came from Arabs. However, the group stressed that the hunt is open for “domestic paedophiles and rapists of all colours”.
“We guarantee you that a date with us will be memorable. And hey, don’t worry, we won’t call the police”, the masked man said in the video, which at the time of writing is still available on Soldiers of Odin founder Mika Ranta’s page on the Russian social network Vkontakte.
According to criminal commissioner Pekka Hätönen, the new video by the Soldiers of Odin can be classified as an instigation to hatred toward ethnic groups. However, for further action, he must first contact the National Prosecutor’s Office, which is responsible for targeting hate speech on the internet.
Commenting on the disappearance of the video from Vimeo and Facebook, Hätönen stressed that the police did nothing to remove the videos and suggested that they were most likely deleted by the services after users reported them.
Hätönen also emphasised that any consequences will only apply to the people who filmed and spread the video, not the group as a whole.
According to Hufvudstadsbladet, the Soldiers of Odin had their heyday at the height of the migrant crisis in 2015-2016, when members of the anti-crime group started patrolling several Finnish cities and mushroomed first into neighbouring countries and even crossing the Atlantic. After that, it’s believed that there was a hiatus in the group’s activity.
However, “since last autumn, they have started to re-appear, both on the street and on the internet”, Hätönen stressed.
According to its own count, the Soldiers of Odin are present in 53 Finnish cities and towns.
In the Scandinavian press, the Soldiers of Odin are often portrayed as neo-Nazis, which the group itself and its flanks in various countries vehemently deny. Some of its members, including founder Mika Ranta, have been convicted of abuse.
At present, several men with an immigrant background are being investigated for sex crimes involving girls as young as 10 committed in the northern Finnish town of Oulu, as well as the capital city. All of the suspects are either migrants or asylum seekers. The grooming gang scandal was sternly condemned by the country’s top-ranking officials, including President Sauli Niinistö, who called it “unbearable”.”

According to US military reconnaissance ISIS terrorists have been cornered in their last stronghold in the Syrian desert as Western backed troops close in for the final bloody battle.
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the UK and US, is preparing for the culmination of a four-and-a-half-year fight to defeat the militants. Insiders predict a victory could come as early as this week.
The estimated 600 jihadists are holed up in Baghuz, 300 miles from Mosul, where Islamic State’s caliphate was proclaimed by its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in July 2014.
In what would once have been a chilling speech in the Great Nouri mosque Mr al-Baghdadi called for Muslims around the world to obey him as the head of the decimated group.
Whether he will see the day out is unknown as Colonel Sean Ryan, spokesman of the US-led anti-ISIS coalition calmly explained the Islamic terror group’s futile position.
He said: “The enemy is fully entrenched and Isil fighters continue to conduct counter attacks.”
While he said it was “too early for a timetable” on when the terrorists would be completely wiped out, local commanders said it could happen as soon as Wednesday.
The physical loss for the group comes as the foreign secretary warned the international community not “mistake territorial defeat for final defeat”.
Jeremy Hunt said: “Military action by many nations, including the UK, has broken Daesh’s grip on thousands of square miles of Syria and Iraq – and we can draw encouragement from that success at the same time as we salute the extraordinary courage of the coalition of armed forces who made it possible.
“Yet as we drive Daesh out of territorial strongholds we are seeing its operatives turning to guerrilla tactics and forming more conventional terrorist networks. So we must press on with the military campaign.”
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 70 civilians had been killed or injured in air strikes in recent days as the battle reaches its final stages.

“n Instagram account featuring comic strips depicting the struggles of gay Muslims in Indonesia was closed down on Wednesday after it sparked a frenzy of moral outrage.
The government’s information ministry had requested that the account be shut down for violating the majority Muslim nation’s strict pornography laws, and threatened to block the social media platform if it did not do so.
The authorities claimed that Instagram had removed the account, under the name @Alpantuni, after their demands.
However, Instagram said it was not involved.
“There are a number of other reasons why an account may not longer be accessible, including, for example, if the account holder deleted the account, deactivated the account, or changed the account username,” an Instagram spokesman told Reuters. The Daily Telegraph approached the company for comment, but it did not respond.
The closure of the account comes amid a sustained crackdown in recent years on the Southeast Asian country’s LGBT community that has targeted them with specialised taskforces and social nuisance laws, and prompted raids on gay saunas and private homes.
Rights activists fear that sexual minorities will come under further attack if the authorities seek to mollify conservative Islamist groups in the run-up to the April general election, even though homosexuality and being transgender is legal in most of the country.

He was allegedly in charge of a General Security Directorate (GSD) prison where at least 2,000 people were tortured between April 2011 and September 2012.

A third man – also believed to have been a GSD employee – was arrested in France on Tuesday as part of a joint investigation, according to Germany.

“Attacks against Jews rose almost 10 percent in Germany last year, with violent acts soaring by more than 60 percent alone, latest crime statistics reveal.
Police recorded 1,646 offenses motivated by antisemitism, according to a government answer to a request by far-left Die Linke party lawmaker Petra Pau.
Among these were 62 violent offenses that left 43 people injured, up from 37 physical attacks the previous year.
In one prominent 2018 case, a 19-year-old Syrian man was convicted for assault after lashing out with his belt at an Israeli man wearing a Jewish kippa skullcap while shouting “yahudi”, Jew in Arabic.
A video of the street assault, filmed by the victim on his smartphone, had sparked widespread public revulsion as it spread on social media, and triggered street rallies in solidarity with Jews.
News of the belt attack coincided with another public outcry, over a rap duo who made light of Nazi death camp prisoners but went on to win the music industry’s sales-based Echo award, which was subsequently axed.
Days after the belt assault, some 2,000 people rallied at a “Berlin Wears Kippa” solidarity demonstration, matched by smaller events in several other German cities.
A mass influx of mostly Muslim, Arab refugees and migrants to Germany from 2015 onwards has corresponded to the sharp uptick in figures, with Germany’s Central Council of Jews saying last November it wants to combat antisemitism among new Arab-Muslim migrants through a government education program.
Vice President Abraham Lehrer told the Protestant Press Service he believes antisemitism among immigrants will become more of a problem as they become more settled in Germany, Welt reported.
“The problem of immigrant Arab-Islamic anti-Semitism still lies ahead of us. Many of these people were influenced by regimes in which anti-Semitism is part of the rationale of the state and the Jewish state is denied the right to existence,” Mr. Lehrer said.
Germany’s population of 82.8 million now includes only about 200,000 Jews. Berlin has the biggest concentration, about 40,000. Before Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came to power, Germany had a Jewish population of about 500,000.
A report conducted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) of 21 schools in Berlin showed the level of anti-Semitism growing among the primarily Turkish and Arab Muslim pupils last year. The group also found a disturbing rise in support for radical Islamism, according to German broadcaster RBB.
Dr. Felix Klein, the German government’s first special envoy to the Jewish community has also warned that Jews’ fear over the influx of Muslim, Arab refugees is legitimate.
Dr. Klein echoed German Chancellor Angela Merkel who warned last April that Muslim immigrants have added a new strain of antisemitism to German culture by holding Jews solely responsible for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

“Three young illegal migrants were arrested in Paris on Sunday evening after they allegedly beat and robbed several transgender prostitutes in the Bois de Boulogne park.
The three men, said to all be in their 20s, claimed to all be from Egypt, though lacked any identification papers, and told police that they were homeless, living on the streets of the French capital, Le Parisien reports.
Police say they received a report about attacks on the transgender prostitutes at around 10:45 pm with claims that the men had beaten the prostitutes with sticks before robbing them.
Shortly after receiving the call, officers were able to track down the three Egyptian migrants finding one of them to be in possession of a wireless speaker along with a pair of high heels while the other two men were found with weapons on them.
The incident comes less than a year after the murder of South American transgender prostitute Vanesa Campos who was shot and killed by a group of migrants who were also attacking and robbing prostitutes along with their clients in the Bois de Boulogne area.
At least nine illegal migrants were arrested in connection with the case with members of the gang, aged 15 to 30, being known under several different aliases.
Diane Leriche, the co-chairman of d’Acceptess-Transgenre, a group which supports the transgender prostitutes, commented on the situation at the park saying, “Nothing has changed in the Bois de Boulogne since the death of Vanessa. There are always gangs of men terrorising them. It’s part of their daily lives.”
The assaults also follow a number of attacks not just on transgendered people but on homosexuals in Paris, as well. Last year, a lesbian couple was attacked by several young men on the city’s public transport and later that year the city saw three homophobic attacks occur within the span of only three days.”

“A report from the Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Brå) says that fatal shootings have become a status symbol for gang members but have also led to a climate of fear among criminals.
The insights into Swedish criminal culture come from a series of interviews done by Brå with 21 individuals said to be involved with both the gang scene as well as incidents involving firearms, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.
The individuals told the agency that the main factor behind the violence was drugs and that in some of Sweden’s troubled suburbs, often referred to as no-go areas, the drug trade was an everyday factor of life with many going into selling drugs. Erik Nilsson, an investigator at Brå, said that the drug trade was seen “to represent money and social status.”
With illegal drugs often comes violence and the Swedish gang scene is no exception, seeing a record 45 fatal shootings in 2018.
“Today, there is a need for greater violence to build their reputation. More violence is needed to achieve a certain effect,” Nilsson said, with interviewees saying that social status motivated both drug dealing and fatal shootings.
Gang members seeing social status coming from fatal shootings has also led to members always being armed in case another gang attempts to kill them and has created a climate of fear, according to investigator Elin Jönsson.
“It is believed that weapons are needed for a shooting to take place at any time, therefore one has to be prepared. Access to weapons is presented as a must,” Jönsson said.
Swedish criminals have been shown to have access to an array of weapons from fully automatic rifles, shotguns, and hand grenades with the country being one of the largest markets for Balkan weapons, according to Bosnian prosecutor Goran Glamocanin.
Swedish authorities have managed to seize weapons in raids, including a raid last month in Gothenburg that uncovered hand grenades, rifles, and explosives.
Sweden also attempted to get hand grenades off the streets by instituting an amnesty for those turning in the explosive devices. According to police, the programme has been lacklustre with no hand grenades turned in as Swedes turned in dynamite and other explosives used by farmers and others.”

Prosecutors in the Bavarian city of Landshut said Wednesday the men, whose names weren’t provided in line with privacy laws, face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of trafficking charges.
They’re alleged to have brought in cocaine from Ecuador hidden among banana shipments to Hamburg. Once the bananas were taken to so-called ripening warehouses around Germany, prosecutors say they then broke into the facilities and recovered the drugs.
Authorities were alerted in 2017 when several boxes of bananas still containing the cocaine turned up in Bavarian supermarkets.

Der Gerichtsmediziner (34) schildert „17 verschiedene Quetsch- und Risswunden am Kopf bis auf den Schädelknochen“ sowie „Abwehrverletzungen an den Armen“. Die Frau sei an Blutverlust und Ersticken gestorben, sagt er.
Verteidigung: Alter ist nicht „beweisbar“
In den Akten steht als Geburtsdatum von Noorullah Z. der 1. Januar 1997. Zum Tatzeitpunkt ist der Angeklagte 21 Jahre und 8 Monate alt. Das Alters-Gutachten, welches das bestätigt, zweifelt der Verteidiger an: „Die Volljährigkeit meines Mandanten zur Tatzeit ist nicht beweisbar.“
Der Angeklagte sitzt da in Denkerpose, Kinn auf die Hand gestützt – und schweigt zur Anklage. Der Prozess soll am 19. Februar fortgesetzt werden. Ein Urteil ist für den 26. März angesetzt.

WASHINGTON — A former United States Air Force counterintelligence agent was charged with espionage after she defected to Iran and helped it target her former colleagues, the authorities said.
In an extraordinarily detailed indictment made public on Wednesday, prosecutors disclosed that Monica Elfriede Witt, 39, gave the Iranians the code name and mission of a secret Pentagon program involving American intelligence operations.
According to the indictment, she was working with members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The elite paramilitary group is known to carry out terrorist operations around the globe and has been sanctioned by the American government.
Prosecutors described how Ms. Witt provided a copy of her biography and job history in August 2013 to a person with ties to Iran’s intelligence services. That same month, she moved to Iran and, while living there, officials provided her with housing and computer equipment. Prosecutors said that she searched Facebook accounts for Americans and created “target packages” for Iran against American counterintelligence officials.

Iran Suicide Attack Kills At Least 20 Revolutionary Guards
At least 20 members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) have been killed and 10 wounded in a suicide attack in the southeast of the country, Iranian news agencies report.
The militant Sunni Muslim separatist group Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack.
The suicide bomber struck a bus transporting IRGC members on the road between the cities of Zahedan and Khash in Sistan-Baluchistan Province, the IRGC said in a statement carried by state media.
Sistan-Baluchistan is a volatile province near the border with Pakistan, where militant groups and drug smugglers frequently operate.
No further details about the attack were immediately available.
Last month, Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for a double bombing in Zahedan, the provincial capital. Three police officers were wounded in the January 29 attack.
In December a suicide bombing in the port city of Chabahar, also in the province, killed two police officers and wounded 42 people.
The province is populated mainly by ethnic Baluchs, who are Sunnis.

“A cryptocurrency fundraising operation used by Palestinian militant group Hamas has been shut down by the Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange following a tip by an Israeli civil rights organization.
“It has recently come to our attention that the notorious Palestinian terrorist group Hamas currently maintains an account with Coinbase, Inc. (‘Coinbase’), through which it is accepting donations,” the Shurat Hadin-Israel Law Center, a nongovernmental organization, wrote on Tuesday to the US-based Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency brokerages, the Jerusalem Post reported.
“Therefore [we are] writing to notify Coinbase that knowingly providing material support or resources to Hamas is a violation of US federal criminal law, and to demand that Coinbase immediately terminate any and all accounts and services provided to Hamas.”
In the US, financial transactions with terrorist organizations, as the US government has designated Hamas to be, were banned under the 1995 Counter-Terrorism Act.
Hamas, an acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement, is a Palestinian militant group that formed in 1987 as a offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Responsible for attacks, including suicide bombings, in Israel during the First Intifada and after, the group won elections in Gaza in 2007 and has dominated its government ever since. At that time, Israel instituted a blockade of the territory and has waged numerous short wars against Hamas there since.
CoinDesk noted last week that Whitestream, an Israeli blockchain analytics firm, had recently discovered several instances in Hamas digital media channels in which public requests for donations pointed to bitcoin wallet addresses.
“Based on shared inputs, we can tell that Hamas blockchain transactions were signed by addresses that are operating on Coinbase company wallets,” Itsik Levy, the firm’s founder and CEO, told CoinDesk.
The fundraiser didn’t accumulate very much: the three addresses together only collected less than $4,000 worth of bitcoin, according to Coinbase.
However, Whitestream also reportedly provided proof of the accounts in question potentially sending bitcoin to accounts on Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and CoinPayments, a cryptocurrency payment platform, meaning they also participated in what the US would consider to be financing a terrorist organization.
Levy noted that “only 2 percent” of all bitcoin transactions are connected to any kind of criminal activity.”

“US prosecutors have accused a former US Air Force officer of spying for Iran in an elaborate operation that targeted her fellow intelligence officers.
Monica Witt, who allegedly defected to Iran in 2013, had previously worked as a US counterintelligence officer.
Four Iranian citizens have also been charged with attempting to install spy software on computers belonging to Ms Witt’s colleagues.
According to the FBI, Ms Witt was last seen in southwest Asia in July 2013.
Prosecutors say Ms Witt had been granted the highest level of US security clearance and worked in the US Air Force from 1997 to 2008.
The US Department of Treasury has also sanctioned two Iranian companies – New Horizon Organization and Net Peygard Samavat Company – for their role in the plot.
“It is a sad day for America when one of its citizens betrays our country, said Assistant Attorney General John Demers, the head of the justice department’s national security division.
What are the charges?
Ms Witt is accused of sharing US government secrets, including the name of agents and specifics of operations, with Iran as early as January 2012.
In a charging document, investigators say the 39-year-old was deployed by the US to locations in the Middle East to conduct classified counterintelligence operations.
Prosecutors allege that shortly after defecting to Iran, she handed over information on her colleagues in order to cause “serious damage” to the United States.
According to officials, she sent a message to her Iranian contact in 2012 saying: “I loved the work, and I am endeavouring to put the training I received to good use instead of evil. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.”
Investigators allege Ms Witt was recruited after attending two conferences hosted by New Horizon Organization, which was working on behalf of the Iranian National Guard’s Quds Force to collect intelligence on attendees.
Several conferences sponsored by the New Horizon Organization have taken place in Iran and Iraq in recent years, according to US officials.
The conferences often included an “anti-Western” sentiment and “propagate anti-Semitism and conspiracy theories including Holocaust denial”.
At least one of those New Horizon conferences was organised by Iranian-American journalist Marzieh Hashemi, who was detained by US officials in January as a material witness in a federal criminal case, according to the Tehran Times.
The Department of Treasury accuses Net Peygard Samavat Company of being “involved in a malicious cyber campaign to gain access to and implant malware on the computer systems of current and former counterintelligence agents”.
Who is Monica Witt?
Monica Elfriede Witt, a former Texas resident, left the US military in 2008 after more than a decade of service.
A previously issued FBI missing persons poster said she was working as an English teacher in either Afghanistan or Tajikistan, and had lived overseas for more than a year before vanishing.
While in Iran, she also allegedly converted to Islam during a television segment after identifying herself as a US veteran, and delivered several broadcasts in which she criticised the US.

San Diego County supervisors are reportedly planning to sue the Trump administration over the widespread releases of asylum-seeking families.
The county board voted on the decision during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, two supervisors confirmed. It was not immediately clear on what grounds the lawsuit would be argued or when it would be filed.

New Jersey Senator and vegan Presidential Candidate Cory Booker issued a dire warning in a recent interview: Meat-eaters will destroy the planet.
Speaking to VegNews.com, the former Newark mayor said the Earth simply cannot sustain itself on the evil meat-consuming “Standard American Diet” taking over the world.
“You see the planet earth moving towards what is the Standard American Diet. We’ve seen this massive increase in consumption of meat produced by the industrial animal agriculture industry. The tragic reality is this planet simply can’t sustain billions of people consuming industrially produced animal agriculture because of environmental impact,” said the Senator.
“It’s just not possible, as China, as Africa move toward consuming meat the same way America does because we just don’t have enough land…The devastating impact is just not practical. The numbers just don’t add up. We will destroy our planet unless we start figuring out a better way forward when it comes to our climate change and our environment,” he added.

Democratically elected people’s assemblies historically have been known for their mediocrity, and the U.S. has been no different. The great champion of American democracy, Alexis de Tocqueville, in 1835 observed, “I was surprised to find so much distinguished talent among the citizens and so little among the heads of the government. It is a constant fact that at the present day the ablest men in the United States are rarely placed at the head of affairs,” a condition that worsens the more democratic the government becomes.
But over the last decade, the ineptitude of our Congressmen has increased dramatically, to the point that today Congress looks like the green room for the Gong Show. The last midterm especially brought to Washington some representatives whose abject ignorance of even basic math is astonishing, and whose embrace of ideas hostile to the American Constitutional order are frightening. More troubling, some of them have become the de facto leaders of the Democrat progressives, the mangy tail that today is wagging the already scrofulous dog. The possibilities for entertainment are many, but so are the dangers to our Republic.
