  1. Socialists hatch RADICAL plan to TAKE DOWN European populism and enforce ENORMOUS taxes (express, Dec 10, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1056658/Brexit-news-socialist-populism-labour-party-jeremy-corbyn-aide-europe-manifesto

“A RADICAL new blueprint for Europe, spearheaded by former Jeremy Corbyn aide Thomas Piketty, has called for €800billion (roughly £717billion) of levies to challenge the rise of populism across the continent.

The left-wing manifesto aims to address division, disillusionment and inequality. The plan has been created in collaboration with several prominent economists. It comes ahead of Parliament’s key, “meaningful vote” on Theresa May’s Bexit deal tomorrow.

Also involved in Mr Pikkety’s socialist document are historians and former politicians from half a dozen countries.

The individuals intend to put pressure on multinationals, millionaires and carbon emissions by introducing enormous levies.

Mr Piketty’s “manifesto for the democratisation of Europe” states EU institutions are stuck in “a technocratic impasse” that benefits the rich.

It reads: “Following Brexit and the election of anti-European governments at the head of several member countries, it is no longer possible to continue as before.

“We cannot simply wait for the next departures or further dismantling without making fundamental changes to present-day Europe.”

The paper’s left-leaning authors criticised populist movements across the continent, blaming them for “hunting down foreigners and refugees”.

They also railed against parties propagating what they call “hardcore liberalism and the spread of competition to all”.

Signatories of the document include Pablo Iglesias, the leader of Spain’s anti-austerity Podemos party, Italy’s former prime minister Massimo D’Alema and the Belgian political scientist and socialist mayor of Charleroi, Paul Magnette.

An adviser to the former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has also signed.

At the heart of the manifesto is a call for a European assembly that would have a budget of up to €800billion (roughly £717billion) a year, financed by taxing corporate profits more effectively, as well as income and wealth.

Despite the far-reaching vision, Labour’s leader in the European Parliament, Richard Corbett, was sceptical of the manifesto’s potential to alter the face of European democracy.

He said: “Instead of using the already existing EU budget and the already existing directly-elected Parliament, and building upon them, it suggests that the member states of the EU would all agree to set up a brand new hybrid Parliament and give it a budget in which it alone would decide on spending four times the size of the existing budget.

“They’d do better to lend their support to proposals that can actually be achieved.”

And Guntram Wolff, director of the Bruegel thinktank, who did not sign the letter, questioned the need for a continent-wide project.

He said: “If the cross-border transfer element is only 0.1 percent, why do the whole thing at EU level?””

  6. Austria: 16 year old girl killed — Police are looking for the Afghan Saber A.+++
A 16-year-old girl was killed the night of Monday in Steyr in her room, apparently by two stab wounds in the back. The 17-year-old friend of the victim is suspicious. The young Afghan Saber A. must have fled through the window after the crime. He was wanted in the morning. The 16-year-old and the 17-year-old had an on-off relationship, according to the public prosecutor’s office. On Sunday the boy visited the girl. It was also the mother who discovered her daughter dead around 11 p.m. in her room. According to investigators, the door was blocked with a box and therefore difficult to open. However, the woman managed it and found the 16-year-old dead. At first glance, only blood was visible in the corner of the girl’s mouth. Then one discovered the two knife stab wounds in the back, said public prosecutor spokesman Andreas Pechatschek. It was clear to the investigators that this was the result of third-party responsibility. An autopsy was ordered. Pechatschek expects the results on Tuesday. Since the window of the room was open, the criminologists assume that the man escaped through the window after the crime. A manhunt was initiated for the accused. At first, however, the motive was completely unclear. It was also not known for the time being what the suspect’s residence status was. The Upper Austrian police published a photo of the suspect on Monday morning and asked for clues. The suspect, Saber A., is 1.74 meters tall, has black hair and brown eyes. He has skin marks on his left cheek, right neck and right upper lip. Information to the Landeskriminalamt Oberösterreich 059133/40 3333 or any police station.

  7. As it happened: More than a thousand arrested in Paris ‘Yellow Vest’ protests

Paris was again the epicentre of clashes as fresh anti-government Yellow Vest protests swept France for a fourth consecutive weekend.

While France’s capital is going to feel the brunt of the Yellow Vests protest this weekend, FRANCE 24 sent its reporters out of Paris to meet protesters in rural France. In the small town of Montargis, the Yellow Vests have set up camp at a strategic roundabout and are preparing to spend the Christmas holidays making their voices heard. FRANCE 24 takes a look at some of the reasons behind their anger.

  8. Macron addresses France amid protests; is it too late?

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron is at last preparing to speak to the nation Monday, after increasingly violent and radicalized protests against his leadership and a long silence that aggravated the anger. Many protesters only want one thing: for him to declare “I quit.”

That’s an unlikely prospect. Instead Macron is expected to announce a series of measures to reduce taxes and boost purchasing power for the masses who feel his presidency has favored the rich. He’s being forced to act after four weeks of “yellow vest” protests that started in struggling provinces and spread to rioting in the capital that has scared tourists and foreign investors and shaken France to the core.

  9. Macron’s Defeat in Paris Sounds Alarm for Europe

The political vultures are circling around the French president and there’s much at stake for the world order.

Less than a month ago, French President Emmanuel Macron staked his claim as the flag-bearer for globalism. In a speech to 60 world leaders at the Arc de Triomphe, he eulogized the United Nations and declared nationalism the “betrayal” of patriotism.

Last Saturday, tear gas and cobblestones flew in the same part of Paris as protesters trashed the iconic monument and demanded Macron’s embattled government withdraw a proposed fuel-tax increase. For the first time in his presidency, he backed down. It was a humbling moment for opponents of the populist revolts that spawned Donald Trump.

Journalists have been beaten, arrested, and robbed in the wake of the civil revolt that paralysed the country earlier in the year

Nicaraguan TV journalist Miguel Mora was driving home from work when he was pulled over by armed police.

“They ordered me take off my glasses and put a hood over my head,” says Mora, who directs the 100% Noticias news channel. “Then they took me by the neck and forced me into a pickup, where an officer told me: ‘You’re responsible for the death of police. If you keep fucking around, we’re going to kill you and your whole family.’”

It was the sixth time Mora had been detained by police in the space of a week. He also faces criminal charges of “inciting hate”, while drones have filmed his house and armed men on motorbikes track his movements.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – At a conference held in Beijing on Saturday, Chinese government and military officials discussed issues in the South China Sea and the current state of relations between the U.S. and China.

Chinese media reports that the situation in the South China Sea is expected grow more intense over the coming year, with one senior military official also declaring that China should be prepared to attack United States naval vessels, should the U.S. violate Chinese “territorial waters.”

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng has summoned the U.S. Ambassador to China, Terry Branstad, in a protest over the arrest of Huawei Technologies Co. Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, and said it will take “further action” if needed.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver on Dec. 1 on the orders of U.S. authorities for allegedly violating American sanctions on selling technology to Iran. Canada’s ambassador to China was summoned to the ministry on Saturday.

At least you’d think so. Let’s wait and see what the inmates at that high-end Brussels asylum have to say about Tehran’s flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolution 2231. 13. China court grants Qualcomm injunction against Apple, banning sale of some iPhones

A court in China has granted Qualcomm an injunction against Apple.

The court has banned the import and sale of nearly all iPhone models in China, according to a statement Monday from Qualcomm. Apple is already disputing the scope of the ban, saying it only applies to iPhones that run on an older operating system.

Apple shares lost 2 percent on Monday, while shares of Qualcomm rose 3 percent. Apple’s stock turned negative for 2018 on Friday and is already down 26 percent this quarter.

“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world,” Apple said in a statement. “All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China. Qualcomm is asserting three patents they had never raised before, including one which has already been invalidated. We will pursue all our legal options through the courts.”

  14. 100 Christians snatched in overnight raids on underground Chinese church

Chinese authorities targeted members of the Early Rain Covenant Church across various districts of Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, in what appears to be an effort to close down one of the country’s most prominent Protestant house churches.

Members’ personal accounts and cell group discussions on social media channels were blocked at around 9pm on Sunday while the church’s telephone line was also cut. The homes of the church’s leaders, including pastor Wang Yi, were among those raided.

Zhang Guoqiang, assistant deacon of the Early Rain Covenant Church, was among two church members who were released on Monday morning after his arrest by Chengdu police in the Sunday night raids.

He is now being watched around the clock by “security personnel” in his home.

  15. Russia Dispatching Blackjack Bombers to Venezuela
Nuclear-capable jets to bolster leftist Maduro regime

Russia is deploying nuclear-capable Tu-160 Blackjack bombers to Venezuela this week as part of an increasingly provocative pattern of bomber training flights, according to American defense officials.

At least two Blackjacks will fly from a strategic forces air base in Russia to Venezuela as part of a series of training exercises that will include long-range refueling, said officials familiar with Russian plans for the flight.

The bomber foray to South America will be Russia’s seventh training flight for Blackjack bombers in the past three months.

Mark Schneider, a former Pentagon official and specialist on the Russian military, said Tu-160 flights are unusual and increasing.

“There were six announced Tu-160 flights of the ‘provocative’ type during the last three months, which is a lot,” Schneider said.

Editors Note: There are few places as chaotic or dangerous as Venezuela. “Life in Caracas” is a series of short stories that seeks to capture the surreal quality of living in a land in total disarray.

Most weekend mornings, you can find Andrea and her cousins juggling on a street corner. She’ll be throwing limes up in the air and catching them just in time to dash over to idling cars before the light turns green.

Early on this Saturday, only a handful of motorists rolled down their windows. Most shook their heads, mouthing, “No tengo, mi amor”—I can’t spare anything, honey. She kept her collections in a pink-plastic purse: 24 bolivars, less than a penny, and a packet of strawberry-flavored wafers. By 11 a.m., that was all she’d had to eat.

  17. Common thread: The Clinton probe by Jeff Sessions’s remote posse, and a nuclear power plant
    By J.E. Dyer December 10, 2018

On 30 November, the end of an eventful week, analyst Jeff Carlson of the blog TheMarketsWork.com published an article at the Epoch Times. I mentioned Carlson’s article in a post on the Michael Flynn sentencing recommendation last week. In the piece, he presented alongside each other four event threads that he suggested might be related.

The common thread, he said, was that “All the activities targeted were either occurring during the Obama era or, in the case of the DOJ whistleblower, were directly related to underlying events from that time.”

The DOJ whistleblower was Dennis Nathan Cain, who was raided by the FBI in mid-November, in spite of having official whistleblower status accorded by the Department of Justice Inspector General, Michael Horowitz. (LU carried an article on it here.)

What Cain is a whistleblower on is the DOJ-FBI handling of the Clinton Foundation/Uranium One probe.

  18. GOOGLE’S ANTI-BREITBART PLOT: Employees Targeted Site’s Ad Revenue in 2017

Emails leaked exclusively to Breitbart News reveal a group of Google employees, with encouragement from the tech giant’s director of monetization, began plotting the downfall of this website shortly after the 2016 election.

The group sought to strike at Breitbart News’ revenue by kicking the site off Google’s market-dominating ad services. Although their efforts ultimately failed, the discussion featured senior Google employees speaking frankly about their reasons for targeting the site. These included unfounded allegations of “hate speech” and “fake news.”

In the leaked emails, Google employee Richard Zippel advised a fellow employee that Google would act against Breitbart News “at the site level” if sufficient examples of “hate” were found. This kicked off a concerted effort to find evidence of “hate speech” on Breitbart.

  19. EU Sees Effort to Sidestep Iran Sanctions Ready by End of Year

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said a special purpose vehicle meant to help companies do business with Iran will be completed by the end of the year.

“I would expect this instrument to be established in the coming weeks, so before the end of the year, as a way to protect and promote legitimate business with Iran,” Mogherini told reporters in Brussels after a meeting of foreign affairs ministers. “Work is advancing well.”

The EU is seeking ways to keep Iran from quitting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 agreement to constrain the nation’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. The U.S. pulled out of the deal in May and reimposed sanctions earlier this month.

France, Germany and the U.K. are trying to find a place to base a special purpose vehicle to handle payments to Iran in defiance of the U.S. sanctions.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-10/eu-sees-effort-to-sidestep-iran-sanctions-ready-by-end-of-year

    =================================================
EU will soon establish alternative payment channel allowing Iran to bypass US sanctions – Mogherini

Brussels will create an alternative payment channel to facilitate financial transactions between the European Union and Iran in the near future to bypass US sanctions, the EU’s top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, has announced.
“I will expect this instrument to be established in the coming weeks before the end of the year as a way to protect and promote legitimate business,” EU’s foreign policy chief told reporters on Monday.

The 28-nation bloc has been considering ways to continue doing business with Tehran and bypass US economic restrictions after Washington pulled out from the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed economic sanctions.

In November, EU officials proposed creating a clearinghouse, or a special purpose vehicle (SPV), to facilitate financial transactions with Iran. The proposal failed to reach an agreement after not a single EU country agreed to host such a mechanism out of fear of punitive measures that Washington may potentially introduce against them.

So far, France and Germany have ruled themselves out as SPV hosts. At the same time, the EU’s major powers are reportedly planning to put more pressure on Luxembourg and Belgium to host the headquarters for the SPV after Austria declined a request to manage the project. Both Belgium and Luxembourg have reportedly dropped a hint of doubt over the issue.

Shortly after President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal, signed between Tehran and major world powers, leaders of European states activated legislation banning the bloc’s companies from complying with US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

However, the measure failed to prevent European business giants, including Total, Volkswagen, Daimler, Peugeot, Renault and Siemens from withdrawing from the country. European multinationals are much more concerned about losing the US market than the possible fines they could face from Brussels for leaving Iran.

  20. Germany: Yellow-vested EVG strikers immobilise Nuremberg train services

Workers belonging to the Railway and Transport Union (EVG) went on strike in Nuremberg on Monday morning, causing major delays to train services in the city amid a nationwide action by rail workers.

Wearing yellow vests and carrying banners, strikers descended on Nuremberg’s central station as part of a protest held during the strike.

The freeze on long-distance and regional trains left commuting passengers stranded on platforms while they waited for services to resume. The strike lasted from five until nine in the morning.

  21. Italy: Salvini presides over eviction of migrants from abandoned factory

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini presided over the eviction in Rome on Monday of a former penicillin factory building that was occupied by migrants and other people in need.

The factory is located in the suburban area of San Basilio in Rome and was closed in 2006. During the intervening years it was left to decay and has been occupied by migrants and the homeless.

Police sources estimated that at one point in the factory there were around 500 migrants, the majority of them from North Africa. They lived in poor conditions, with no electricity and running water.

The eviction was planned weeks ago and around just 40 migrants were still present on Monday morning when the eviction began, with hundreds of police officers deployed. It is unclear where the migrants will be allocated afterwards.

  22. Over 40% of European Jews Thinking of Emigrating Due to ‘Safety Concerns’ – Poll (sputniknews, Dec 10, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201812101070563088-europe-jews-emigrating-safety/

“The EU body which carried out the poll has urged European leaders to do more to tackle anti-Semitism, warning it could spiral out of control unless action is urgently taken.

41 percent of Jews in Europe are considering emigrating due to “safety concerns” over rising anti-Semitism in the continent, a fresh poll has found.

The report by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights also revealed that around 80 percent of UK Jews think anti-Semitism is a major issue in national politics, amid the ongoing scandal surrounding the Labour Party and its alleged tolerance of anti-Semites.

Almost a third of the 16,000 surveyed Jewish respondents, from all across Europe, said they avoid holy sites and religious events because they feel unsafe and vulnerable.

Alarmingly, 95 percent of the sample in France deemed anti-Semitism to be a “fairly big or very big” in the country, with nine out of ten reporting to have been attacked or have faced hostility in public for their religious beliefs.

V?ra Jourová, the European commissioner for justice, described the poll’s findings a major disappointment for the bloc, urging leaders to do more to stamp out the issue.

She directly addressed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and called on him to “pay attention” to the survey.

“I read quite a lot of his quotes and a lot of articles and he is trying to get out of this label but, OK, I hope he will pay attention to this survey. This is a serious message we have received from the Jewish community. We must do everything to let the Jewish communities now that they are not alone in Europe,” Jourová said on Monday.”

    • EUROPE’S SHAME: Terrified Jewish people facing ‘no-go zones’ – shock EU report (express, Dec 10, 2018)
      https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1056877/europe-jewish-germany-no-go-zones-anti-Semitism-Felix-Klein-Michael-Wolffsohn

“ANTI-SEMITISM is rampant across Europe with a shock new EU report warning of a rise in ‘no-go zones’ for Jewish people.

The report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights found a worrying rise in anti-Semitism – especially in Germany, which was highlighted as a particularly hostile environment. Out of 16,395 Jews interviewed during the study, 75 percent of German interviewees abstain from wearing Jewish symbols in public, with 46 percent of Jews in Germany avoid entering certain areas. Up to 44 percent from Germany have even considered immigrating due to feeling unsafe in no-go areas. Of those questioned, 85 percent of German Jews consider anti-Semitism to be a major problem, with 41 percent having said they have suffered an anti-semitic experience.

Felix Klein, anti-Semitism commissioner of the Federal Government, told Bild: ”The fact that people identifiable as Jews do not want to enter certain areas for fear of hostility is something I find alarming.

      “I will fight against this!”

Shockingly, up to 95 percent of Jews in France have experienced anti-semitic abuse.

Hungary also scored highly for anti-semitism with 71 percent of Hungarian Jews having experienced abuse for their religion.

The dark insight to Jewish life is a poor result for Europe as a whole but in no other country have as many Jews experienced anti-semitic harassment as in Germany.

Mr Klein said: “Anti-Semitism has in the past been viewed as a problem only for Jews. There was a lack of awareness that anti-Semitism threatened all of us, our common German culture.

“Against the background of our history, anti-Semitic incidents in Germany are particularly serious. We must do everything we can to rid ourselves of this sad front-runner position.”

Up to 41 percent of German Jews stated that the perpetrators had a Muslim background, with 20 percent of anti-semitics being right-wingers and 16 percent left-wingers.

But despite Muslim anti-Semitism, Europe’s and Germany’s Jews worry about Muslims.

Up to 72 percent of Jews from the rest of Europe and 89 percent of German Jews said that intolerance towards Muslims has increased over the past five years with 57 percent of European and 54 percent of German Jews see this intolerance as a major social problem.

The study analysed 12 Member States where over 96% of the EU’s estimated Jewish population live. Over 16,000 Jews aged 16 or over took part in the online survey from May to June 2018. It builds on an original survey published in 2013.”

      • Merkel’s Germany has acted consistently against the interests of Jews and the Jewish State. All those expressions “deploring anti-Semitism” are just so much hot air.

Charles Krauthammer (z”l) said: “Mourning dead Jews is easy. And, forgive me, cheap. Want to truly honor the dead? Show solidarity with the living—Israel and its 6 million Jews.”

Israel pressuring Germany to end funding for anti-Israel groups, report says

The letter reportedly accuses Germany of going out of its way to support groups that are engaged in anti-Israel activity and that try to intervene in Israel’s internal affairs. As one of many examples, the letter names the +972 magazine of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a think-tank associated with the Green Party, saying its authors “regularly accuse Israel of apartheid.”

The letter reportedly also accuses the Jewish Museum Berlin of stressing the Muslim-Palestinian view” in a current exhibit about the city of Jerusalem, and comments on the museum’s “regularly occurring events and discussions with prominent supporters of the BDS [anti-Israel boycott] movement.” Germany’s international film festival, Berlinale, is confronted with the same charge.

The letter names foundations, church-based groups and partner organizations in both Israel and the Palestinian Authority as being involved in anti-Israel activities, and criticizes German funding for films by groups that support BDS.

It urges Germany to “tie its further financial support to the complete halt of such activities.”

A very belated happy Hanuka (I just KNOW I misspelled that) to you. And thank you for your wonderful wishes with links included. I saw them, but I have enormous computer & online problems at the moment…am in line for a new computer.

          • Thank-you, Rita!

Yes, I loved the speech of the Jewish AfD.
Though I hold no hope for the future of the German-Jewish community, a positive relationship between Israel and the most powerful nation in Europe is certainly possible.

The perfidy of Merkel is exposed more each day. Thing is, it’s too easy to lay it off on one miserable individual. Even throwing in Federica Mogherini, Margot Wallstrom, Jens Stoltenberg, and the like isn’t enough. You can’t leapfrog these individuals to the toxic tards of today to explain the pervasive sickness that’s become apparent.

Demonization, delegitimization of the Nation State of the Jewish people has been a collaborative endeavor. Soviet propaganda, inverted guilt for the Holocaust, and medieval scapegoating all reside in the tangled bowels of Europe.

Decades of defamation, from 1967 on, have accomplished their objective. Antisemitism has morphed smoothly into anti-Zionism. Apartheid, genocide, Rothschilds. Every commie murderer was a Jew, the Elders of Zion are more real than the Devil for the godless European.

Even many Euro-Jews have swallowed the Nazi inversion of reality. Most of them are so assimilated they’ll end up like the 10 Lost Tribes. That is, if they’re allowed to get away with a simple shahada.

      • Mr Klein said: “Anti-Semitism has in the past been viewed as a problem only for Jews. There was a lack of awareness that anti-Semitism threatened all of us, our common German culture.

It’s grimly amusing to watch someone in Germany start to realize that Selective Enforcement—engendered by a Tyranny of the Minority—can totally undermine Rule of Law.

Up to 41 percent of German Jews stated that the perpetrators had a Muslim background, with 20 percent of anti-semitics being right-wingers and 16 percent left-wingers.

And, yet, in they pour by the thousands from Islam’s very worst hellholes. All to no other effect than destroying every last vestige of European culture and justice.

  23. Iran arrests more than 100 Christians in growing crackdown on minority (telegraph, Dec 10, 2018)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/12/10/iran-arrests-100-christians-growing-crackdown-minority/

“ran has arrested more than 100 Christians in the last week, charities report, amid a growing crackdown by the Islamic Republic.

Many of the 114 detained were converts to Christianity from a Muslim background, accused of “proselytising”.

They had to report the history of their Christian activities and were told to cut contact with any Christian groups, according to Open Doors UK, a charity which speaks out on persecution against Christians.

While Christianity has existed in Persia since Christ’s death, many believers fled after the Shah was deposed in a coup and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was installed in the Islamic revolution of 1979.

There are no official records, but there are estimated to be some 350,000 remaining in Iran – some one per cent of Iran’s population, with a rising trend toward converting to Christianity.

Christian advocacy groups report a growing underground evangelical movement in Iran, where they say increasing numbers of people who have become curious about the minority religion.

While worship is permitted under the Islamic Republic’s constitution, conversion to Christianity can be a crime meriting a sentence of more than 10 years imprisonment.

Iran’s powerful mullahs are committed to expanding the influence of Shia Islam and blame “foreign influence” for the conversions.

Some groups say they have reported a worsening of treatment of Christians following the U’s reinstatement of sanctions on Iran.

“There are many reports that this has contributed to the government’s ever-increasing dependence on hardline Islamic ayatollahs, who naturally see Christianity as a threat to their power,” Jeff King, president of International Christian Concern.

“For this reason, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing an increase in Christian persecution.” It has become increasingly common for authorities to arrest worshippers, raid house churches, and confiscate Bibles.

At the end of September, Christians Saheb Fadaie and Fatemeh Bakhteri were also sentenced to 18 and 12 months in prison, respectively.

The two men were found guilty of “spreading propaganda against the regime,” apparently for preaching about the ascendancy of Jesus Christ.

A report released earlier this year by the Commission for International Religious Freedom observed that, “in the past year, religious freedom in Iran continued to deteriorate for both recognised and unrecognised religious groups, with the government targeting Baha’is and Christian converts in particular.”

“This spike in arrests is highly concerning,” said Zoe Smith, head of advocacy at Open Doors. “It follows an established trend of the Iranian government – as the number of converts to Christianity increase, so the authorities place greater restrictions on churches.

“The restrictions are worse for churches seen to be attended by Christians who have converted from Islam. Not only that, but the government is asking unreasonably high bail amounts and seeing longer prison terms for Christians.”

She warned that some Christians disappear from their communities after serving prison sentences. “Church leaders are put under pressure to leave the country or face an arrest,” she said.

“House churches weaken as their members choose to decrease their meeting hours and minimise their activities; some Christians lose the contact with their churches altogether becoming isolated.””

“German prosecutors say they have charged a 29-year-old Syrian man with war crimes on allegations he tortured pro-government forces his unit had captured.

Prosecutors said Monday that Mohamad K., whose last name was not released in line with privacy laws, served in the rebel Free Syrian Army from January 2012 to January 2013.

During that time, they allege, he was involved in the torture of two prisoners who were part of a pro-government militia, whipping them with a “cable-like object” while they were unclothed, “inflicting considerable pain.”

The suspect was arrested in June and charges have been filed in Stuttgart state court.

Further details about when he arrived in Germany and how German authorities learned of the allegations against him were not immediately available.”

  29. ‘Stansted 15’ Who Blocked UK Immigration Removal Flight Facing Life Imprisonment (sputniknews, Dec 10, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201812101070561774-stansted-15-activists-jail/

“December 10 marks international human rights day – but also the conviction of 15 UK activists who stalled the takeoff of an immigration removal charter flight by blocking the runway have been convicted of endangering the safety of Stansted airport, a terrorism offence for which they could face life imprisonment.

Following a nine-week trial, the jury at Chelmsford crown court took three days to find the defendants — all part of the End Deportations campaign group — guilty of intentionally disrupting flight services at an aerodrome, a breach of the 1990 Aviation and Maritime Security Act.

Helen Brewer, Lyndsay Burtonshaw, Nathan Clack, Laura Clayson, Mel Evans, Joseph McGahan, Benjamin Smoke, Jyotsna Ram, Nicholas Sigsworth, Alistair Temlit, Edward Thacker, Emma Hughes, May McKeith, Ruth Potts and Melanie Stickland, aged 27 to 44, had all pleaded not guilty.

    Protest Actions
The protest fell March 28 2017, at night — their target was a Boeing 767 aircraft chartered by the Home Office, sat on the Stansted runway, awaiting to dispatch undocumented immigrants to Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

The activists cut a hole in the airport’s perimeter fence, arranged themselves around the plane’s front landing gear and used lock devices to secure themselves to it — elsewhere at the airport, a second group constructed a two-metre tripod from scaffolding poles behind the engine on the plane’s left wing, upon which one of them sat while others locked themselves to the base to prevent removal.

The prosecution argued these actions, which led to a temporary shutdown of Stansted, posed a grave risk to the safety of the airport and passengers alike.

While the defence argued the group acted to prevent human rights abuses, judge Christopher Morgan told the jury to disregard all their evidence and only consider whether there was a “real and material” risk to the airport — defence barristers claim the move amounted to a direction to convict…”

  33. Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr wants Canadian passport to travel, permission to speak to sister

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr wants to be granted a Canadian passport to travel to Saudi Arabia and permission to speak to his controversial sister.

Khadr, who is now 32, will be back in the Court of Queen’s Bench in Edmonton Thursday to apply for changes to his bail conditions which were imposed while he appeals war crime convictions by a U.S. military commission.

An affidavit by Khadr filed with the court says the impact of his bail conditions are mainly psychological — a daily reminder of what he went through.

“I feel like the indefinite and potentially endless detention that I suffered in Guantanamo Bay is continuing,” he wrote. “I hope that there will be some end to this process, but there is none in sight.”

Khadr spent years in U.S. detention at Guantanamo Bay after he was caught when he was 15 and accused of tossing a grenade that killed special forces soldier Christopher Speer at a militant compound in Afghanistan in 2002.

He says in his affidavit that he would like to be able to speak on the phone or over Skype to his sister Zaynab Khadr. He is also asking to perform the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia which is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims once in their lifetime.

“For this reason, I would like to apply for a Canadian passport,” he said in the document.

Zaynab Khadr has spoken in favour of al-Qaida and was investigated in Canada more than a decade ago for helping the terrorist network, but she was never charged.

“My sister Zaynab is not presently in Canada,” Khadr said in the document.

“She is living with her husband and family. As far as I am aware, she is not in any sort of trouble.”

The rules of Khadr’s bail allow him to meet with her but only in the presence of his bail supervisor or one of his lawyers.

Khadr also needs permission to travel outside Alberta, and has made several trips to Toronto both to visit his family and deal with a civil lawsuit there to enforce a judgement granted against him in Utah.

In his affidavit, Khadr said he has been volunteering with an organization that helps refugees integrate into the community and has earned his high school diploma. Khadr said he is happily married and was accepted into a nursing program, but has been unable to devote himself to study due to his legal issues.

“My reintegration into the community has been filled with happiness and not bitterness,” he wrote. “I have no anger towards anyone and I have been getting on with my life. I have made many friends, and I am proud and happy to be a Canadian citizen living in Canada.

His case has ignited sharp and divisive debate among Canadians over terrorism, human rights and the rule of law since the summer of 2017 when it was revealed the federal government had settled a lawsuit filed by him for a reported $10.5 million.

The payout followed a ruling by Canada’s Supreme Court in 2010 that Khadr’s charter rights were violated at Guantanamo and that Canadian officials contributed to that violation.

  34. Australian-Iranian Population Expert Arrested in Iran (aawsat, Dec 10, 2018)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1498671/australian-iranian-population-expert-arrested-iran

“Iran has detained an Australian-based academic on charges of trying to “infiltrate” Iranian institutions, according to state media.

State news agency IRNA identified the detainee as population expert Meimanat Hosseini-Chavoshi who was held as she was leaving Iran.

Hosseini-Chavoshi is affiliated with the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.

Population control became a sensitive issue in Iran when the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued a decree in 2014 calling for a population increase after decades of state-promoted birth control.

In October, Khamenei called for greater efforts to combat enemy “infiltration” as tensions escalated with the United States after Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran, according to Reuters.

Commenting on reports of detention of several experts advocating population curbs, judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei told reporters that authorities have arrested one person in this regard and are seeking three or four other people.

The judiciary’s news website Mizan quoted Ejei as saying “Everyone knows that the enemy is trying to infiltrate state bodies… and affect decision-making.”

He added that foreign intelligence agencies stand behind many academic institutions, but some individuals who work there are not aware of that.

Last week, IRNA said there were reports that authorities had detained an Australian-based population expert on charges of trying to “infiltrate” state bodies in Iran.

IRNA quoted an attorney who named the detained woman as Hosseini-Chavoshi, and said that she did not have legal representation yet.

The agency quoted Kayhan as saying Hosseini-Chavoshi was detained by security forces in a drive against “enemy infiltration elements” as she was leaving Iran.

In 2017, Reuters reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had arrested at least 30 dual nationals in recent years, mostly on espionage charges. Among those held was British-Iranian aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Iran does not recognize dual nationality and does not routinely announce arrests or charges of dual nationals, whose rights to consular assistance are enshrined in the UN Vienna Convention.

In other news, police arrested 10 people Sunday in connection with the suicide attack in southeastern Iran that killed two police officers.

Separatist group “Ansar al-Furqan” has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s assault in which an explosives-laden car was driven into a police station in Chabahar.

Authorities rejected this claim of responsibility for the attack, which also injured around 40 people.

Police chief Hossein Ashtari said 10 people had been arrested without giving any further details.

The group released a photo of the alleged suicide bomber on Saturday, identified as Bassim Abdullah Aziz, according to the Site Intelligence Group, which monitors militant activities.”
