Margaret Thatcher Tax Triggers Riot
A plume of black smoke hung over Trafalgar Square on this day as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s poll tax triggered the worst riots seen in London for a century.
Officially called the Community Charge, it replaced the “Rates” – a system of local government taxation based on the estimated rental value of a house. It had been around in some form since the start of the 17th Century.
Mrs Thatcher decided instead on a flat-rate charge for every adult, earning her new levy the nickname “poll tax” as a result. It was a decision that would contribute significantly to her downfall.
The tax was seen as deeply unfair, a common argument protesting that a millionaire and his cook would pay the same charge. It was a tax on individuals regardless of their means. An opinion poll at the time showed that 78 per cent opposed it.
With seven days to go before its introduction up to 250,000 people turned up in London to protest while many smaller rallies were held across the country.
The trouble in the capital flared when a group of protesters, sitting in Whitehall close to the entrance of Downing Street, refused to move when told to do so by the police. As arrests were being made placards and cans were thrown from the crowd.
The disturbance then quickly spread to Trafalgar Square, which became a battleground, and surrounding areas. It escalated into savage violence on both sides, the baton-wielding police being attacked with bricks, cans and pipes. Shop windows were smashed, overturned cars were set alight and much of central London was cordoned off.
By the end of the day 113 people had been injured, 45 of them police, and 340 protesters had been arrested…

Patents recently issued to Google provide a window into their development activities. While it’s no guarantee of a future product, it is a sure indication of what’s of interest to them. What we’ve given up in privacy to Google, Facebook, and others thus far is minuscule compared to what is coming if these companies get their way.
These patents tell us that Google is developing smart-home products that are capable of eavesdropping on us throughout our home in order to learn more about us and better target us with advertising. It goes much further than the current Google Home speaker that’s promoted to answer our questions and provide useful information, and the Google-owned Nest thermostat that measures environmental conditions in our home. What the patents describe are sensors and cameras mounted in every room to follow us and analyze what we’re doing throughout our home.
They describe how the cameras can even recognize the image of a movie star’s image on a resident’s t-shirt, connect it to the person’s browsing history, and send the person an ad for a new movie the star is in.

Adequately deflecting these granular attacks usually requires an astronomically expensive jaunt to the Supreme Court and the Liberals damn well know it.

Big Tech Is in Big Trouble

Unless their portfolios were over-weighted by the FAANGs: Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Alphabet (parent of Google), which remain in the ICU after a tiny recovery at week’s end. These stocks are down 20 percent, or $1 trillion from this year’s highs. Some $800 billion of their market value has simply vaporized in the last three months alone.
Reasons peculiar to each company are partly responsible for these declines. Apple’s shares are down 26 percent from their high point this year (“bear territory” in investorspeak) due to disappointing sales of its three new iPhones, and the possibility that a protracted tariff war will disrupt its Chinese-based supply chain. Google, its troubles in America only now coming under serious scrutiny, is already on the losing end of its battle with E.U. regulators. It has watched its shares dive 17 percent from their 2018 high. Which is less than half the 40 percent plunge Facebook has taken.

Please know that this dyed-in-the-wool proponent of Free Market economics is colossally pissed off at the way nearly all of high tech has perverted everything it touches. Such a blowtorch-style, withering retrenchment of tech stocks is both well-deserved and long overdue.
And it isn’t just high tech that’s losing it’s luster. Millennials are cutting the (cable TV) cord in such droves that network executives are perching on their top-floor office windowsills.

Yesterday Disney announced in its yearly 10K filing that ESPN lost another two million subscribers in fiscal year 2018. ESPN now has 86 million subscribers, down from over 100 million subscribers in 2011.
Incidentally, saying that the loss of an entire year’s gains is, “Hardly a catastrophe for investors”, constitutes a total slap-in-the-face for any small shareholder. It is the typical arrogance of “economists” and economic pundits to focus strictly on large investment firm activity and ignore the regular (almost clockwork) wipeouts of smaller market players.
Slightly off topic (but not really): For some truly interesting reading—beware, as the first 100 pages are dry as a hay sandwich—and several hilarious doses of sneeringly sarcastic contempt for all forms of investment managers, bankers, and economists, please consider reading Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s superb, “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable“. It is an exceptionally instructive volume on investment risk and a searing exposé of those who commercially profit from ignoring it.
To close, it can only be hoped that this current shrinkage of tech stocks is merely the starter’s pistol for what should be a massive and excruciating spanking that these self-important, wannabe Social Engineers have coming in spades.
It is, it is also shows how the investors are worried about the various governments either taking over portions of the companies or regulating the companies.
Given what is happening in the world’s economy and the various groups working to destroy civilization the world is in for several very hard decades. They will probably be bad enough that we look back on the current times as the good old days.

HATE IN LOS ANGELES: Man Tries Running Over Orthodox Jews on Friday Night [VIDEO]
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is investigating a disturbing incident which occured on Friday night.
YWN spoke to one of the victims who says that at around 9:30PM on Friday night, he and another person were walking on Le Brea Blvd and Oakwood – in front of the Bais Yehuda Shul, when a vehicle drove past screaming anti-Semitic slurs at them.
The victim says the vehicle made an abrupt U-Turn and began hurling anti-semitic slurs before attempting to run over the group of identifiable Orthodox Jews. The vehicle sped off and was involved in a car accident at the intersection of Highland and Oakwood.
The victim tell YWN that there was a Koran on the windshield, and the driver was of Middle-Eastern descent.
Additionally, after the LAPD arrived at the scene of the crash, the man continued on his anti-Semitic rant.

Alleged migrant caravan member attacks border agents with rocks

A man claiming to be a part of the migrant caravans attacked Border Patrol agents in Yuma Friday night, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.
The Yuma sector agents discovered footprints belonging to the subject, who had illegally crossed into the country just east of the Andrade, Calif. port of entry. They tracked the suspect for nearly a mile, and eventually encountered him near a tree.
Authorities said that’s when the man climbed the tree, set it on fire, and began throwing rocks at the agents on the ground. The subject also threw rocks at a CBP Air and Marine helicopter, which was requested to help with the apprehension.
No one was struck in the attack, according to a CBP press release.

Human smugglers slash their $10,000 per-person price when migrants bring children up to the U.S. border to exploit asylum loopholes, says the Washington Post.
Reached by phone in Kansas City, [Denys Adelmo] Mejia said he saved thousands of dollars by traveling with a child. His smuggler would have charged $10,000 if he had been traveling alone, he said; with Elizabeth Dayana, it cost $4,500 for both of them. He has three years to pay this off — in monthly installments — or his mother could lose her house.

President Donald Trump is using a fast-track regulation and a presidential announcement to modify the asylum rules which prevent the quick deportation of illegal border-crossers.

The policy covers the migrants in the three caravans that are moving northwards, and all other migrants who cross the border illegally. Currently, most of the economic migrants who cross the border are allowed to file for asylum, which ensures their release into the U.S. job market for at least two years, pending a judge’s approval or rejection of their asylum claims.

Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley Sector stopped several criminal aliens and three gang members from making their way successfully into the U.S. interior. Those arrested included two child rapists, two killers, a member of the 18th Street gang and two MS-13 gang members.
On the day before Thanksgiving, McAllen Station agents arrested a man who illegally crossed the border from Mexico near the town of Hidalgo, Texas. During processing at the station, agents discovered the man is a Honduran national and a confirmed member of the 18th Street gang. Later that same day, other agents working near Hidalgo arrested a Salvadoran man who illegally crossed the border. Records showed that man is a confirmed Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang member.
Agents working near the border town of Los Ebanso, Texas arrested a Mexican national who illegally re-entered the U.S. after being deported. The deportation stemmed from an arrest and conviction in Tukwila, Washington, for the rape of a child. The court sentenced the Mexican man to 41 months in prison and three years probation.
Rio Grande City Station agents patrolling near Roma, Texas, on Wednesday also took a child predator off the streets. The agents arrested a Salvadoran man after he illegally re-entered the U.S. from Mexico. During processing, agents learned from court records that the man received a conviction in Aurora, Colorado, for sexual assault of a child. The Colorado court sentenced the illegal alien to three years in prison.

First caravan-related violence reported in U.S. as rocks thrown at Border Patrol
The Border Patrol reported the first major instance of migrant caravan-related violence Saturday, saying a Honduran man threw rocks at agents to try to keep from being arrested Friday in Arizona.
The 31-year-old, whom authorities didn’t name, had climbed a tree to try to avoid capture, then lit the tree afire and began to throw rocks at the agents as well as a helicopter called in to help track him.
Neither the agents nor the helicopter were hit by the projectiles.
The man was eventually arrested, and agents said he told them he was part of the migrant caravan that had been in the news. They said he had previous arrests in the U.S. and had been deported back in June.
A local fire department had to be called to extinguish the fire.
Caravan members totaling as many as 10,500 have been massing on the Mexican side of the border in recent weeks, Homeland Security officials say.
While many images of the caravan show women and children, U.S. authorities say a majority of members are single adults, predominantly men, from Central America. That would make the Honduran man’s claims of caravan membership plausible.

In his 1989 book A Critique of the Satanic Verses Conspiracy, Ataollah Mohajerani, the former Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance of Iran, justified the proposed assassination of the British author based on the teachings of the Koran and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad. The fatwa led to years of diplomatic isolation for Iran and confirmed its status as an international pariah. Mohajerani has been living in the United Kingdom since he was forced into exile, allegedly because of an illegal affair, in 2004. It is not clear whether he has become a British citizen or holds an “indefinite leave to remain” visa. Mohajerani, who refused to be interviewed for this article, has never expressed any regret for writing the book and has not commented about the current status of Khomeini’s fatwa against Rushdie.

In light of the new, much-hyped “official” report on global warming that is being pushed by almost all the media and the record cold that is occurring now in many parts of the U.S., it would be helpful if some enterprising journalist actually reported how often the people have been scared by previous warnings of global warming or cooling.
An article in Wattsupwiththat.com from 2014 encapsulates the multiple intentional scares from 1895 on. Throughout the entire 120 year period fossil fuel use was growing exponentially, population growth was exploding, and CO2 concentration was increasing. The fact that temperatures both rose and fell during this period shows that there is no correlation between temperature, fossil fuels, CO2 and the human population. Storm activity, floods, droughts, and sea levels have also fluctuated throughout billions of years.

China’s plan to judge each of its 1.3 billion people based on their social behavior is moving a step closer to reality, with Beijing set to adopt a lifelong points program by 2021 that assigns personalized ratings for each resident.
The capital city will pool data from several departments to reward and punish some 22 million citizens based on their actions and reputations by the end of 2020, according to a plan posted on the Beijing municipal government’s website on Monday. Those with better so-called social credit will get “green channel” benefits while those who violate laws will find life more difficult.
The Beijing project will improve blacklist systems so that those deemed untrustworthy will be “unable to move even a single step,” according to the government’s plan. Xinhua reported on the proposal Tuesday, while the report posted on the municipal government’s website is dated July 18.
China has long experimented with systems that grade its citizens, rewarding good behavior with streamlined services while punishing bad actions with restrictions and penalties. Critics say such moves are fraught with risks and could lead to systems that reduce humans to little more than a report card.

Ukrainian navy: Tugboat rammed by Russian ship near Crimea
The incident took place Sunday as two Ukrainian navy artillery boats and a tugboat were transiting from Odessa on the Black Sea to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, via the Kerch Strait, a narrow passage between Crimea and the Russian mainland.
“Russian coast guard vessels (…) carried out openly aggressive actions against Ukrainian navy ships” during the transit, the Ukrainian navy statement said. It said a Russian coast guard ship damaged the tugboat’s engine, hull, side railing and a lifeboat.

Why is Parliament using extraordinary measures to seize internal Facebook docs linked to U.S. election?

There is something weird going on here. The UK Guardian reports that Parliament used extraordinary, rarely-invoked measures to effect the seizure of documents, from a U.S. company, and that what it’s all about is indignation over the U.S. allegations about Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, and the 2016 election.
In other words, this isn’t about a specific, UK-relevant beef Parliament has with Facebook. Guardian‘s description of events (emphasis added):

Indian army spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia said Indian troops surrounded a village in the southern Shopian area early Sunday, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which six militants were killed. An army soldier was killed and another wounded in the fighting, he said.
The incident triggered anti-India protests and clashes as hundreds of people marched near the site of the gunbattle in solidarity with rebels as the fighting raged in the area.
A teenage boy was killed and 20 people were injured when troops fired bullets, shotgun pellets and tear gas to confront the stone-throwing protesters, police and residents said.
Kashmir is divided between rivals India and Pakistan and both claim the territory in its entirety.
Most Kashmiris support rebel demands that the territory be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country, while also participating in civilian street protests against Indian control. In recent years, mainly young Kashmiris have displayed open solidarity with the rebels and sought to protect them by engaging troops in street clashes during military operations.
Rebels have been fighting Indian control since 1989. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, a charge Pakistan denies.

“Tens of thousands of Hindus gathered in northern India on Sunday renewing calls to build a Hindu temple on a site where a 16th century mosque was attacked and demolished by Hindu hard-liners in 1992, sparking deadly Hindu-Muslim violence.
The demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the building of the temple and waved a banner that said, “No more requests, now it will be battle.”
The Hindu hard-liners are building pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to move quickly on the issue. Modi had promised to build the temple in the 2014 national elections that brought him to power. The next national elections are due before May next year.
Security was stepped up for the rally, with thousands of police and paramilitary forces deployed in and around Ayodhya, a town 550 kilometers (350 miles) east of New Delhi, to prevent any attacks on Muslims, who comprise 6 percent of the town’s more than 55,500 people.
The gathering brought Hindu holy men and activists to the town where the Hindu god Ram was believed to have been born.
“Hindus have waited for a long time. They are losing patience,” Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, who heads the committee on the disputed land, told the crowd. “The time has come for the government to take a call.”
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s ally in the federal government, the Shiv Sena party, asked Modi’s government to bring legislation to build the temple, as India’s top court is taking time to settle a land title dispute between Hindus and Muslims.
Shiv Sena’s chief, Uddav Thackeray, said if construction of the temple does not start, Modi’s government would not return to power. “The prime minister has to choose between the temple and the government,” he told reporters.
Hindu fundamentalists with pickaxes and crowbars razed the 16th century Babri Mosque to the ground in December 1992.
Hindu groups say the mosque was built after a temple dedicated to Ram was destroyed by Muslim invaders.
The destruction of the mosque sparked riots across India that left at least 2,000 people dead. Thousands more died in later violence caused by disputes over the site.
The issue was also taken to court. A lower court in 2010 ruled that the disputed land should be divided into three parts — two for the Hindus and one for the Muslims. The decision was challenged in the Supreme court, but there has not been any decision yet.”

In the past few months, there have been renewed calls to build a temple on the spot, where a 16th Century mosque was demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992.

Why are people gathering in Ayodhya?
Between 100,000 and 200,000 Hindus are expected to gather at Ayodhya on Sunday, demanding that a Hindu temple be built where the 16th Century Babri mosque once stood.
Hindus believe the religious site in the state of Uttar Pradesh is the birthplace of one of their most revered deities, Lord Ram. But Muslims say they have worshipped there for generations.
Tensions between the two communities came to a violent head in 1992 when a Hindu mob destroyed the mosque.
Nearly 2,000 people were killed in subsequent riots across the country.
But now, after various attempts to claim ownership over the land by both religious groups, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been scaling up efforts to build a Hindu temple there.
The crowds who are expected to gather at the site are from various hardline right-wing groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Shiv Sena.
Local media reports say that walls in districts surrounding the site have been plastered with posters that show Lord Ram going to war. Others contain slogans that are essentially war cries against what they call the inability by previous governments to get the temple constructed.
The situation has prompted a sense of panic and fear among Ayodhya’s Muslim residents, many of whom have plans to leave the area before the crowds descend.
“This is the biggest build-up in favour of a temple since the mosque was destroyed. They are provoking the public. They are stirring up emotions,” Ahmad, a Muslim community leader, told the Reuters news agency.
Why is it back in the spotlight?
The call for the construction of a Hindu temple in Ayodhya has grown particularly loud in the last few months and has mostly come from MPs, ministers and leaders from the BJP.
Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, sends more MPs to parliament than any other state. A big win in the state is essential for any party hoping to form the next government.
Correspondents say the BJP appears to be attempting to galvanise Hindus in Uttar Pradesh along religious lines once again. The party’s strategy paid off in 2014, when it managed to win 71 of the state’s 80 seats.
The BJP’s projection of a united Hindu identity that superseded caste and class divisions and positioned them against those from “other” religions, is largely seen as having been responsible for that performance.
This same momentum helped the party sweep state elections last year. But since that victory, and the instalment of the controversial Hindu hardliner Yogi Adityanath as chief minister, the BJP has lost several key local elections.
One was a parliamentary by-election in Mr Adityanath’s home constituency. Analysts say this could be due to a number of reasons, including farmers who are unhappy with the government after being badly affected by drought and declining productivity.
The BJP may see Ayodhya as offering a way of reversing this trend.

Muslims claim they offered prayers at the mosque until December 1949 when some Hindus placed idols of Ram in the mosque and began to worship the idols.
Over the decades since, the two religious groups have gone to court many times over who should control the site.
What are the important legal developments so far?
The Supreme Court, which is hearing a batch of pleas about the disputed site, has deferred its next hearing until January 2019.
But there have been several interesting legal landmarks so far.
In 2010, the Allahabad High Court said that the main site where the mosque stood should be split into three parts, with two-thirds given to Hindus and one-third to Muslims.
The ruling also marked the first time any court had acknowledged the disputed site as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
In 2011 the Supreme Court suspended this ruling after both Hindu and Muslim groups appealed. Since then, some 14 civil petitions have also challenged it.
But another judgement worth noting is one from 1994 when the Supreme Court, which was ruling on a wholly separate case at the time, remarked that the mosque was “not integral to Islam”.
This particular line has bolstered the case made by Hindus who want control of the entire site.
In April 2018, a senior lawyer named Rajeev Dhavan filed a plea before the top court, asking judges to reconsider this observation.
But a few months later the Supreme Court declined to do so.
As recently as last month, the same court rejected an urgent hearing into the civil petitions. “We have other priorities,” chief justice Ranjan Gogoi said, adding that the matter would be taken up early next year.
Have religious tensions eased in India in recent years?
Ever since the Narendra Modi-led Hindu nationalist BJP came to power in 2014, India has seen deepening social and religious divisions.
Rabble-rousing by hardline ministers and Hindu groups has led to what many call greater anxiety in social relations.
Restrictions on the sale and slaughter of cows – considered a holy animal by the majority Hindus – have led to vigilante killings of more than 20 people, most of them Muslims who were transporting cattle.
An uninhibited display of muscular Hindi nationalism has also contributed to religious tension.
The recent revival of the demand by some Hindu groups to construct the temple at Ayodhya through executive fiat – ignoring proceedings in the Supreme Court – is seen by many a renewed attempt to polarise the voters on religious lines ahead of the crucial 2019 elections.

“Turkish authorities detained two people following a drive-by shooting near the Austrian Embassy in capital Ankara early Sunday.
The governor’s office said in a statement the two suspects were detained and their weapon confiscated. It said the suspects were thought to be under the influence of alcohol after having drunk late into the night.
The governor’s office said the suspects shot into the air from a moving car near the Austrian Embassy at 0400 am (0100 GMT). There were no reports of damage or injuries.
Official Anadolu news agency said they were in a white car and security forces briefly closed down roads near the embassy in Ankara. According to the agency, crime scene investigators found many shell casings overnight.
Video from the night showed police at the scene and numerous police cars.
It is unclear if the embassy was the target. All was normal in the area Sunday morning.
In August, three bullets hit the gate and reinforced window outside the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in a drive-by shooting. No one was injured. The U.S. embassy is located on the same boulevard as the Austrian one, about 130 meters (427 feet) away.”

“Bristol Council has deliberately rolled back attempts to tackle Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), leading to a 95 percent crash in the number of referrals, after claims they were “over-policing” the Somali community.
An FGM safeguarding group for the city – England’s tenth-largest – which works with the council and police altered guidelines for referring girls suspected of being at risk of the grim practice this summer, Bristol Live reports.
The guidelines are intended to aid people such as teachers when deciding if they should refer a girl to authorities for a safeguarding assessment.
The move was made after a high-profile attempted prosecution of FGM in the city collapsed in February when the judge claimed medical evidence was inconclusive.
The Somali-origin father had allegedly admitted to allowing his seven-year-old daughter to be cut on the clitoris to stop her feeling “sexy”, but the judge said witnesses were “inconsistent”.
Members of the Somali community later attacked campaigners and professionals, claiming they had taken an “aggressive and oppressive” approach to tackle the gruesome crime.
FGM has been illegal in the UK for 33 years, but there has still not been a single prosecution, despite 4,495 new cases recorded by medical staff just last year.
Anne Farmer, the Chair of Bristol’s FGM Safeguarding and Delivery Group, reportedly told a council scrutiny committee earlier this week: “We were capturing more families than necessary.”
The group has decided to amend its referral guidelines following a review of 33 cases in January, she explained, saying new guidelines had been brought in over the summer.
Following the change, just eight girls were referred to children’s services in July, compared with 127 over the same period last year.
Labour councillor for Southmead Brenda Massey expressed concern, calling it a “huge” drop and demanding “further analysis.”
The group’s audit had only been conducted on selected children who were referred by schools in a limited area, she claimed.
“While proportionate intervention is the right way forward, we need to ensure girls and young women are protected, which can be a finely balanced judgement,” she said.
However, Labour councillor Asher Craig, who is of African origin herself, welcomed the massive fall in referrals, claiming FGM had been “over policed” in the Bristol’s Somali community.
“I am glad to see that the numbers have come down as a result of the changes,” she said.
“I think it’s more proportionate.””

Yves Boussuge, 58, who lives in the small French village of Laroque-Timbaut, was attacked on June 18th 2017 after driving down a country road in his tractor by a man who was already under house arrest for Islamic radicalisation, Le Parisien reports.
The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. when Kamel Belbakkal was out on his moped, despite having been put under house arrest in 2016 for his allegiance to the Islamic State terror group.
The Islamic State supporter, annoyed at the tractor kicking up dust, confronted Mr Boussage and another man he was with at the time.
The radical began an argument with the two Frenchmen that escalated into violence and pulled out a knife described as being around 25 cm long and stabbed Boussuge in the forearm while yelling “Allahu Ackbar!”…”

“The Swedish government has announced its support for the controversial UN migrant pact, claiming the agreement will provide “great potential” for Sweden’s economic and social development.
The Swedish government confirmed their support for the migration pact in a press release aimed at giving more information about the agreement to Swedes on Thursday.
Their statement claims the agreement will not be legally binding — which is disputed by its detractors — and asserts that the framework of the pact will have benefits for Sweden as well as migrants, saying: “There is a shortage of labour in several sectors in the Swedish labour market. Labour migration helps to meet this demand.
“Furthermore, migrants’ remittances can contribute to important income for families in poor countries as well as investments in health, education, and housing,” they add.
Remittances, or money a foreign worker sends out of his host country to his homeland, have not been seen as purely positive in Italy, where populist interior minister Matteo Salvini promised to implement a tax on money sent overseas to help pay for his pro-family policies, designed to increase the Italian birthrate and reduce the supposed need for immigration.
Another major concern over the UN agreement has come from free speech advocates, who are concerned that a section which talks about combatting xenophobia and racism toward migrants would criminalise criticism of mass migration more generally.
The Swedish government claims there would be no infringement of free expression as a result of the agreement but added that “states, in accordance with international law, should work against racism and discrimination against migrants.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already defended the migrant pact, which has been questioned by other countries, with the United States, Austria, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Australia, and others pulling out.
U.S. President Donald Trump was the first leader to drop the agreement in 2017, commenting: “Migration should not be governed by an international body unaccountable to our own citizens. Ultimately, the only long-term solution to the migration crisis is to help people build more hopeful futures in their home countries — make their countries great again.”

“Yes, well, he revived, we’ve come to a fairly significant, and difficult decision–my wife and I.” He liked to tell stories. “We were there just two weeks ago. A former student of mine–a good friend–lots of money from developing and all that, we were at his place. A gated community.” He chuckled then continued: “…a gated community with more gated neighborhoods inside of it. Problem is, you see, he’s a Trumper.”
He said this perfunctorily. He assumed I held his hand firmly in this world of slippery ice on which we both were standing. Like last night’s character of different name but same game, I let him talk.
“Then that Jewish couple down from New York start on about how fast they’re able to lock and load and they’ve taken their course and all this horse shit…” He waved his hand through the air dismissively.
“I’m sorry, you were speaking to these people where?” I asked for clarity.
“At the dinner party at my friend’s place.”
“Oh, I see.”
“We asked them why? They said to protect our family.” He was disgusted. “So needless to say, I will conclude my story with a song–” And he broke into a lyric repeating “Victoria, Victoria, Victoria…” He and his wife would be wintering on Dystopia’s left coast from now on because of President Trump.
My head hurt more now. America’s loss was Dystopia’s loss. Or something like this. Like I said before, I need a new word.
I run into a lot of people like that, they are usually refugees from the Northeast or the Northwest but seem intent on importing the evils they ran from. Missouri has constitutional carry and a lot of people in the small towns don’t bother to conceal their weapons, the refugees freak out every time the see people walking around armed. They say “It is so peaceful around here why are so many carry guns?” they get a confused look on their face when I reply, “The armed people is why it is so peaceful.”
I wish Canada was a more civilized nation with rational gun laws.

Macron to address nation after violent Paris protests
PARIS: Faced with violent anti-government protests in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday will announce new measures in an attempt to rally support for environment-friendly tax increases.
Paris was counting the cost of clashes between police and demonstrators Sunday (Nov 25) on the Champs-Elysees where barricades were set on fire, luxury shop windows smashed, and traffic lights uprooted. Some 30 people were injured and 101 arrested, police said.
The government blamed much of the violence on a small minority of “ultra-right” activists who infiltrated some 8,000 demonstrators wearing the yellow, high-visibility vests that symbolise their week-long protests against hikes in fuel tax.
Bruno Le Maire, the economy minister, acknowledged Sunday that “the current crisis goes far beyond just a question of fuel”, adding that it was important that “work be better paid” to improve living standards.
“It is time to listen to the French,” he said on BFM television, suggesting that Macron, on Tuesday, would call for “grassroot debates” throughout the country on government policies.
Elysee presidential palace said Macron would make a speech next week on ecological transition where the French leader is expected to address the protests.
Opposition leaders have been quick to note that the protests, mostly organised by grassroot protesters coordinating by way of social media rather than by traditional political parties or trade unions, have won wide popular support.
“When a movement has the backing of three quarters of French people, you give them an answer, you don’t just dismiss them as a gang of thugs,” Olivier Faure, the socialist party leader told Le Parisien newspaper.
Guillaume Peltier, a leader of the conservative Republican party, told Le Parisien it was “all too easy to stigmatise the ‘yellow vests’ … and equate their movement with that of a few unacceptable acts”.
Former investment banker Macron was elected on a pledge to put more money in workers’ pockets. But the effects of his pro-business reforms on unemployment and purchasing power have been limited so far.
He has seen his popularity slide to just 25 per cent, according to one poll a week ago, and the protests reflect broader frustration with a leader critics label as aloof and a “president of the rich”.
Sunday morning, a number of protests continued, notably in southern France, where ‘yellow vests’ picketed the entrance to a motorway in Saint-Maximin and blockaded traffic in and around Avignon.
Protesters were also calling on social media for another national demonstration next Saturday.
The interior ministry said however that the number of protesters across France had dwindled from 282,000 on Nov 17 to 106,000 Saturday.
“EXPECT REVOLTS”
Macron, who took to Twitter on Saturday, to condemn the violence and cry “shame” on those who assaulted or intimidated policemen, journalists and other citizens, was in Brussels Sunday for a short summit of European Union leaders on Britain’s Brexit deal.
He was to return to Paris early to work on the speech he will give Tuesday on ecological transition, an opportunity which many politicians suggest he should use to announce measures to soften the impact of rising petrol taxes and restore public dialogue with trade unions and others on how to improve living standards.
“When you act like Louis XIV, you can expect revolts (…) The French back the ‘yellow vests’ because Macron promised them a new world, and they see that his policies aren’t delivering – neither an increase in purchasing power, nor a drop in unemployment, with ever higher taxes and spending,” Bruno Retailleau, who heads the Republican opposition in the Senate.
The French “see environmental matters as an alibi for fiscal belt-tightening,” he told le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.
The “yellow vests” come overwhelmingly from non-urban areas of France. They feel overlooked and penalised by policies they see as being pushed through by elitist politicians in Paris.
Many of the often low-income “yellow vest” protesters are particularly incensed at Macron’s decision to hike anti-pollution taxes on diesel, while scrapping a wealth tax on the rich.
“I’m not just fighting against the price of fuel. It’s about tax, what we pay,” protester Catherine Marguier said near the village of La Gravelle in northwest France.
Previous rounds of revolts pitting motorists against government took place in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2008, often when tax increases coincided with high oil prices – as they have this year.
A poll by the Odoxa research group for Le Figaro newspaper this week found that 77 percent of respondents described the current protests as “justified”.

While debate on the UN migration pact rages worldwide, with a growing number of nations following the United States in withdrawing, the major deal has seen little discussion in the United Kingdom.
Britain’s ruling Conservative Party made pledges to reduce immigration “from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands” in the 2010, 2015, and 2017 general elections, a promise they have not yet made significant progress in keeping.
Indeed, net migration to Britain still runs at over 270,000 a year, and former Tory chancellor George Osborne has suggested the party’s leadership never intended to honour the pledge.
Either way, signing the United Nations’ so-called Global Compact on Migration for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration would be a major step away from ever realising that commitment, a campaign group has said.

A sixth-century mosaic of Saint Mark, stolen from a church after Turkey’s military invaded Cyprus in 1974, was recently recovered in a Monaco apartment and returned to Cypriot officials. The ancient masterpiece was described by Arthur Brand, the Dutch investigator who located it, as “one of the last and most beautiful examples of art from the early Byzantine era.”
Many other cultural Cypriot relics, from churches and other sites, were stolen from Cyprus by Turkish invaders and smuggled abroad. Some were recovered and returned in the past. In 1989, mosaics stolen from the Church of Panagia Kanakaria, discovered in the United States, were returned to Cyprus.
In the summer of 1974, Turkey mounted two major military campaigns against Cyprus and occupied the northern part of the island (which Turkey now calls the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” recognized only by Turkey). Since the Turkish invasion, much information has emerged not only about the atrocities committed against the Cypriots, but also of the destruction of historic, cultural and religious monuments.

Egypt: Police stood by and encouraged a Muslim mob attacking a church. After local Muslims in Ezbet Sultan Pasha village learned that Christians, who form about 20% of the population, were on their way to legalizing a church building, they surrounded it on July 6, after Friday prayers. “The protesters were chanting slogans against us [Christians], such as ‘We don’t want a church in our village,'” said one resident. “We locked ourselves in our homes during the demonstration because we were afraid that they would attack us. Police didn’t do anything to disperse the demonstrators and didn’t arrest anyone of them.” Demonstrations continued into the next day with no police intervention.

On the following Friday, again after Muslim prayers, local Muslims and others from neighboring villages, surrounded the church again and hurled stones and bricks at it and a at nearby Christian home. “They were shouting ‘Allahu akbar’ [‘Allah is greater’] and chanting hostile slogans against Copts, such as: ‘We will not allow any church to exist in our Muslim village,’ ‘We will not allow any other prayers to be held in our Muslim village except our prayers,'” said another Christian resident. A previously deported illegal alien climbed a tree to avoid being arrested by Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents. He then set the tree on fire and threw rocks at the agents and a helicopter.
Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents observed footprints leading from the international boundary just east of Andrade, California, port of entry. The tracks led the agents to a man who had just illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico, according to information obtained by Breitbart News from Border Patrol officials.
The agents tracked the migrant for about a mile before locating the suspect near a tree. The subject quickly climbed up the tree to avoid arrest. He then set the tree on fire and began throwing rocks at the agents gathered below. As a U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Operations helicopter circled overhead, the migrant began throwing rocks at it as well. The illegal alien was unsuccessful at his attempts to assault the agents and the helicopter.
The migrant eventually climbed down from the tree. Border Patrol agents placed the migrant in custody and transported him to the station for processing.

A French farmer who was attacked by a knife-wielding man yelling “Allahu Ackbar” has complained that the prosecution in the case has not treated the crime as terrorism despite the attacker also being on France’s terror watch list.
Yves Boussuge, 58, who lives in the small French village of Laroque-Timbaut, was attacked on June 18th 2017 after driving down a country road in his tractor by a man who was already under house arrest for Islamic radicalisation, Le Parisien reports.
The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. when Kamel Belbakkal was out on his moped, despite having been put under house arrest in 2016 for his allegiance to the Islamic State terror group.
The Islamic State supporter, annoyed at the tractor kicking up dust, confronted Mr Boussage and another man he was with at the time.
The radical began an argument with the two Frenchmen that escalated into violence and pulled out a knife described as being around 25 cm long and stabbed Boussuge in the forearm while yelling “Allahu Ackbar!”

Over 100 civilians were hospitalized, including dozens of women and children, after anti-Assad militants unleashed a wave of mortars filled with poison gas on government controlled Aleppo Saturday evening.
Syrian state-run SANA published multiple photos and video of victims in the city’s hospitals being treated for what’s reported to be chlorine gas exposure. Though it’s not the first time that ‘rebels’ seeking to topple the Assad government have conducted a chemical attack on pro-government areas according to United Nations findings, it is the first time that mainstream American outlets like CNN and Reuters have featured coverage of such events.

Live feed – claims that Russia has fired on Ukrainian navy
The Ukrainian navy says Russia has opened fire and seized three of its vessels off the coast of the annexed Crimea, in an escalation of tensions.
Two gunboats were captured and a tug was forced to stop, a statement said. Two crew members were injured.
Russia is yet to comment on the claims.
It earlier accused Ukraine of illegally entering Russian waters, blocking access to the Sea of Azov with a tanker.

Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to give Swiss law precedence over international law and treaties, according to results coming in from a national referendum.
Figures based on partial results give 67% against and 33% in favour, national broadcaster SRF said.
Critics said the proposal would have damaged the country’s global standing.
A proposal to subsidise farmers who do not remove their cows’ horns has also been rejected.
The rejection of the sovereignty proposal is a major blow for the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which put it forward, says the BBC’s Imogen Foulkes in Geneva.
