The Wall Street Journal on Friday published a lengthy article about the “new Cold War era with China,” relating a number of tense incidents that explain why so many Trump administration officials are sounding alarms about the Chinese.
One of those incidents allegedly involved White House Chief of Staff John Kelly fighting a “physical altercation” with a Chinese official for control of the U.S. nuclear “football” during President Trump’s trip to Beijing.
This remarkable anecdote comes about three-quarters of the way through the piece:
The other reasons given for Trump administration officials turning sour on China are not as spectacular, but they are compelling in their own right: President Trump, a longtime critic of China’s trade policies, was disappointed with China’s tepid response to his actions in defense of Chinese telecom company ZTE. Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Joe Dunford was angered when a tablet left by one of his aides in a Chinese hotel room was tampered with. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was hammering out the details of a trip to Beijing when a Chinese destroyer nearly rammed a U.S. Navy ship in the South China Sea.
National Security Adviser John Bolton sees China as a security threat on par with North Korea and Iran. Trade adviser Peter Navarro is passing around copies of Michael Pillsbury’s seminal warning about Beijing’s ambitions, The Hundred-Year Marathon: China’s Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower.
The upshot is that Team Trump was preparing all along for a new Cold War they saw as inevitable, even as they spent the first 18 months of the presidency wooing Beijing to support sanctions against North Korea. The dual strategy was driven by the conviction of key Trump advisers that while China profited handsomely from the threat of a nuclear North Korea, it really did not want to see actual nuclear missiles in the hands of the deranged Pyongyang regime.

Jason Bassler, who co-founded the project in 2013, told RT that what Facebook did is an act of political censorship and has nothing to do with its stated goal to clean up its platform from spam.
“If that was just spam, if that was just irrelevant garbage they wouldn’t be so threatening, they would not ban us, they would not care, we would not have been on their radar.”
By spinning the story as a fight against unworthy news trash, Facebook itself is misleading users with its own version of fake news, he said: “This is nothing more than political censorship and trying to eradicate certain political ideologies.”
Nicholas Bernabe, founder of The Anti-Media, 2.1mn followers
Nicholas Bernabe, blogger and entrepreneur behind the independent news aggregator The Anti-Media, believes that “the most troubling” thing in Facebook’s treatment of media pages is that tech giants are now trying to police cultural dialogue by posing as politically neutral.
“That could actually be perceived as Facebook itself meddling in elections, because we are only a few weeks away from the midterms and they go and target 800 politically-oriented media pages for deletion.”
He added that the majority of the banned pages held “very anti-establishment, very anti-authoritarian views,” that appealed to those whose take on election is very different from what mainstream media has to offer.

It is hard to overestimate the implications for those that were swept up in the purge, Matt Savoy of The Free Thought Project said. Many of the affected websites will be out of business and “thousands of people will be out of work.”
“This is like a death blow. Facebook was a source of how we were able to get our links out and drive traffic to the website, and we no longer have it. The few remaining employees that we have, they are going to be gone.”
Journalists did not have any time to prepare for the looming crackdown, Savoy said, and at first the staff thought it was a mere glitch.
Matt Bergman, Punk Rock Libertarians, 190,000 followers
Matt Bergman, who founded the Punk Rock Libertarians in 2010, told RT that his ‘The Daily Liberator’ podcast was taken down from Facebook without any explanation. Bergman’s own account was also briefly suspended, as well as those of other page admins.
The purge is the result of the pressure Congress put on Mark Zuckerberg, and its first targets were independent outlets “right of the dial,” since it’s easier to get away with banning relatively small outlets than major channels like RT, he argued.
“Their terms of service agreement is probably a million words long. Nobody has ever read it all the way through and I would think that if they wanted to they can ban CNN, they can ban you guys, if they wanted to, they can ban anybody.”
Bergman said he is filing an appeal in a bid to restore the account.
Dan Dicks, Investigative Journalist, 350,000 followers
Vancouver-based investigative journalist Dan Dicks, who writes for The Press for Truth, said the Facebook crackdown was “clearly political” as it saw tech companies assuming the role of “the gatekeepers of political thought.”
“What we are dealing with here today is the silencing of anybody who goes against the status quo right now, does not matter right or left side of the political spectrum.”
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, expunged from Facebook and Twitter, might have been “the first domino to fall,” but now the crackdown has widened to affect smaller outlets that vie for minds of the people on par with mainstream media, he said.
The crackdown on anti-establishment voices will come back to bite Facebook, UK Labour Party activist and political theorist Dr. Richard Barbrook argued.
Facebook and other tech companies who feel compelled to impose more “traditional media censorship” are likely to see a mass exodus from their platforms, he believes.
“The problem is if they are doing it too much, people would be gone somewhere else, where they don’t have network effects working against them,” Barbrook told RT.”

Close to 40,600 migrants have reached Spain by sea since the start of the year with another 398 dying in the process, according to the latest figures of the International Organization for Migration.

“The Italian government has announced the deportation of three African migrants suspected of close ties with Islamist terrorist groups, including one who had expressed the desire to kill “white tourists” and “Christians”.
The Ministry of the Interior led by Matteo Salvini released a statement on Friday with a brief description of the three men, adding that they had been identified as linked to “Islamic extremism”, were judged to be “a danger for national security”, and therefore “repatriated.”
The first was a 22-year-old Moroccan man with “numerous precedents” for common crimes, drunkenness, and disorderly behaviour. In October 2017, the man had threatened passers-by outside the synagogue in Florence brandishing a kitchen knife and shouting “Allah Akbar” (God is Greatest).
The second is a 24-year-old Gambian national, who had also been arrested for common crimes, and is accused of having served in “international terrorist groups.” In a notebook found in his possession the man had reproduced diagrams of explosive devices with instructions for their assembly and use.
In the same notebook, the man declared his affinity to a paramilitary formation active in central-western Africa, expressing the strong desire to “kill white tourists” and “Christians” in Gambia by striking hotels and churches. The man wrote that he entrusted the success of his future attacks to Allah.
Finally, authorities also expelled a 28-year-old Tunisian citizen who had been arrested in Modena for vandalism and the sale of drugs. During his trial, the man repeatedly praised the work of the Islamic State and, refusing to return to his detention cell, had attacked prison police.
The announcement of these deportations followed closely on the expulsion of an imam charged with “inciting to Islamic terrorism.” The 26-year-old Egyptian imam, Ahmed Elbadry Elbasiouny Aboualy, had been living in Italy on a work permit since 2005 and was expelled from the country earlier this week.
According to investigators, Aboualy espoused a radical Islamist orientation that was confirmed by surveillance of his electronic communications as well as his dealings in the mosque.
Aboualy had also been identified as one of those responsible for an attack against the magistrate Daniela Santanché in 2009 during a demonstration against the full Islamic veil.
The Interior Ministry declared that Friday’s deportations brought the total number of expulsions carried out since January 2015 to 339, of which 102 have happened in 2018.”

Berlin produced an absurdly hot and sunny fall day on Saturday to welcome an estimated 240,000 people demonstrating against racism and calling for solidarity against the rise of far-right populism across Germany.

Violent scenes have erupted in central London as supporters of the right-wing Democratic Football Lads Alliance clashed with police and rival demonstrators during a march and one told officers: ‘I’ll kill you’.
Hundreds of Football Lads protesters marched from Park Lane to Whitehall – with one of them seen making a Nazi salute – before some of them began to push through police escorts and chaos ensued.
Many could be heard chanting ‘Whose streets? Our streets?’, as the group marched down Pall Mall on Saturday afternoon in one of their largest demonstrations so far.
Organisers said they were protesting ‘returning jihadists’, ‘thousands of Awol migrants’, ‘rape gangs and groomers’, and ‘veterans treated like traitors’.
Vans and riot officers had to separate a rival crowd of counter-demonstrators, many of them masked, who shouted: ‘Nazi scum off our streets’ at the DFLA in clashes near Trafalgar Square.

Chinese Communist Propaganda Group Paying for Vox Posts
Explanatory media website Vox has been receiving money from a Chinese communist government-backed front organization.
A recent Vox blog post by foreign editor Yochi Dreazen titled, “The big winner of the Trump-Kim summit? China” discloses at the bottom of the piece that the reporting was subsidized by the China-United States Exchange Foundation.
“This reporting was supported by the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), a privately funded nonprofit organization based in Hong Kong that is dedicated to ‘facilitating open and constructive exchange among policy-makers, business leaders, academics, think-tanks, cultural figures, and educators from the United States and China,'” the post states in a note at the bottom.

Italy’s interior ministry ordered Saturday that all migrants be transferred out of a tiny southern town that had welcomed them but which triggered a national debate on integration after its mayor was arrested.
Domenico Lucano, the left-leaning mayor of Riace, made headlines around the world for welcoming migrants to the sparsely-populated town in Calabria in a bid to boost jobs and development.
But earlier this month, he was placed under house arrest on charges of involvement in organising “marriages of convenience” for asylum purposes.
Known as Mimmo, the mayor has also been accused of skipping a tender process to award a rubbish management contract to co-operatives with ties to migrants.
His arrest was hailed by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and his far-right League party as proof that the “government of change has declared war on the immigration business”.
But it sparked an outcry from supporters who say the “Riace model” — funded since the 2000s with Italian and European funds — is a simple but effective way to both revive depopulated villages and house hundreds of asylum seekers.
The transferral of the migrants to other centres will begin next week, according to the ministry, which has been investigating “clear irregularities” in the town’s reception system since 2016.
The state gives small centres 35 euros a day for each resident with the bulk of the money spent on providing accommodation, food and language lessons. A small amount of pocket money is also given to the migrants.

Lucano said his lawyers were preparing an appeal against the ministry, which has demanded a breakdown of all expenses.
“How is it possible to think of destroying the ‘Riace model’, which has been described by innumerable people, politicians, intellectuals and artists, as an extraordinary experience?” he asked.
“They want to destroy us,” he added.
“I am immensely bitter.”
His migrant programme has seen abandoned houses restored and craft workshops reopened in Riace, attracting tourists, and has been lauded by many as a model of integration.
Lucano was even named one of the 100 most influential personalities by Fortune magazine in 2016 and inspired a docu-fiction by Wim Wenders.
Salvini, who wants to reduce projects inspired by Riace and group asylum seekers in large centres, has seen his popularity increase since the coalition government came to power in June.

Emails from June 2002 and obtained by the Washington Examiner give insight into Sinema’s work as a community organizer for the Arizona Alliance for Peaceful Justice. The group, she wrote at the time, “opposed the use of violence and weapons in all situations” and “believes in world disarmament.” For all those high-minded ideals though, Sinema wasn’t ready to force her beliefs on anarchists.
“When AAPJ attended May Day (sponsored by the Phoenix Anarchist Coalition), we knew that their guidelines differ from ours,” Sinema emailed a fellow protester. “They are okay with weapons and property destruction in some instances, and so those of us who chose to attend the event knew that it would be inappropriate to ask someone to not destroy property or to carry a weapon.”

An Upper East Side Republican club was vandalized overnight — with a brick thrown through its window, two anarchy symbols scrawled on its front door and the locks glued, authorities said Friday.
The attack at the Metropolitan Republican Club on East 83rd Street near Lexington Avenue appeared to be at least partly tied to the scheduled appearance of right-wing provocateur Gavin McInnes at the club Friday night.
McInnes, a co-founder of Vice Media, heads a right-wing group called the Proud Boys, which has been characterized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
A note found at the club after the vandalism attack read in part, “The Metropolitan Republican Club chose to invite a hipster-fascist clown to dance for them, content to revel in their treachery against humanity.”
But the note also ripped the party in general.
“Tonight, we put the Republican Party on notice, in defiance to the policy of mass misery they have championed,” it read. “The US government has established concentration camps around the country for Latino people, shamelessly murders black people, and continues its war machine that has slaughtered Muslim people with impunity for decades.”
