UGA physician tracks tuberculosis using cellphone records
Tuberculosis is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide, and though the World Health Organization has said the average global burden of disease is on the decline, some areas of the world continue to feel its impact.
Researchers at the University of Georgia have received a $2.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to understand the local epidemiology of TB in African urban settings and help these communities develop targeted interventions to reduce transmission.
Led by physician and epidemiologist Christopher Whalen at UGA’s College of Public Health, the team will estimate where TB is being transmitted by combining information about patient movement with genetic information from the bacteria itself. Understanding where transmission is happening is the key to effective control, said Whalen.
The standard approach to tuberculosis control today relies on detection and treatment of tuberculosis disease, but this approach doesn’t work in areas where the disease burden is high.

Video released this week shows construction underway in El Paso, Texas, for a portion of a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
The video published by the El Paso Times shows construction beginning to replace existing fencing with a wall in Chihuahuita, El Paso’s oldest neighborhood.
The wall, construction for which began last Saturday, is set to run from Chihuahuita and continue east for four miles.
The 18-foot-tall steel bollard wall will replace the chain link and metal fence as part of President Trump’s executive order last year authorizing construction of his wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, the administration said.

Rival rallies as Erdogan opens mega mosque in Cologne
Cologne (Germany) (AFP) – Thousands of demonstrators hit the streets of Cologne Saturday as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened one of Europe’s largest mosques at the end of his visit to Germany, with police out in force to manage rival rallies.
The inauguration capped a controversial three-day state visit aimed at repairing frayed ties with Berlin after two years of tensions.
During his stay in Berlin, Erdogan met twice with Angela Merkel for talks, with both leaders signalling their interest in a cautious rapprochement.
But the German chancellor stressed that “deep differences” remained on civil rights and other issues.

One of the people the Senate Judiciary Committee reached out to in advance of the hearings last Thursday was Christine Blasey Ford’s best friend as a teenager, Leland Ingham (now Keyser), who said through her attorney, Howard Walsh:

This time, however, Walsh included the statement, “Ms. Keyser does not refute Dr. Ford’s account, and she has already told the press that she believes Dr. Ford’s account.”

Politico reports that after the midterm election, Democrats in Congress have a plan to invoke a law from 1924 that allows the chairmen of tax policy committees to privately examine the tax returns of anyone who files one in the United States, even without that filer’s permission.
Their target will be President Trump. The president, at least, will be their initial target. Politico is coy with further speculation, but it’s a safe bet that if they regain a majority in at least one chamber of Congress, Democrats will use this power against anyone they want to.

The police department that has jurisdiction over the area where Christine Blasey Ford claims Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her says it has not opened an investigation into the matter because Ford has not requested one, among other reasons.
The Montgomery County Police Department says it stands by its “victim-centered” approach to launching investigations, despite Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s call Thursday for a full investigation of Ford’s allegations and a Wednesday letter from 11 Democratic Maryland state lawmakers with a similar request.

“The controversial new Islamic centre responsible for the care and education of children as young as five has appointed to a key position a convicted criminal who sold mobile phones stolen from teenagers.
The Emaan Islamic Centre in Sheffield includes among its trustees a shopkeeper who was handed an 18 month suspended sentence in 2016 after pleading guilty to five counts of handling stolen goods.
Aiman Mohammed Saeed, 51, was caught in a police sting operation selling phones stolen in street robberies and from nightclubs in the city.
A court heard how Saeed, who runs an electrical goods shop called Yem Tech was caught on camera selling stolen iPhones to undercover officers and asking them to steal Xboxes and PS4 games for his business.
The stolen phones in his possession included one snatched from a 16-year-old girl by two men in a street robbery.
But at the time he committed the offences Saeed was a trustee of the ambitious Emaan mosque and Islamic centre project in Sheffield.
The centre, overlooking the city’s industrial Don Valley, boasts that it will “promote and teach Islamic morals and values to new Muslim generations”.
But in court Saeed was described by the prosecution as a Fagin-like figure who encouraged “people to steal things so he could sell them in the shop”, then called A&E Satellites.
On top of his 18 month suspended sentence he was ordered to pay compensation to seven people whose stolen phones were found in his possession and to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
Saeed, who is a Yemeni national, has been an officer of Emaan Trust since January 2009.
The Emaan Islamic Centre faced criticism last year after The Telegraph revealed that plans for its construction were being overseen by a cleric reported to be a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB).
A report by the former British ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 2014 concluded that the MB is a “secretive network” that “promotes values that appear intolerant of equality and freedom of faith and belief”. However it is not designated as a terrorist organisation.
Khalid Al-Mathkour, who has been a trustee since April 2016, is also chairman of Kuwait’s sharia council and has previously called for Barbie dolls to be banned for wearing “accessories and revealing clothes” and having a boyfriend.
The mosque also included as a trustee until August last year Essam Al-Fulaji, who has repeatedly issued anti-Semitic statements, including that Jews “are the ones controlling the world”, that “Zionists and Mossad were behind the September 11 attacks” and that Jews control the US media and politics.
The trust last year said Dr Al-Fulaji had ceased to be a trustee by mutual agreement because “some of [his]views are incompatible with the workings and objectives of the Emaan Trust, and in particular in serving the wider community in Sheffield”.
The Henry Jackson Society security and foreign policy think tank said Saeed’s inclusion on the board of trustees showed the Emaan trust was “ unsuitable to run a mosque or, as it states as one of its primary focuses, educate and raise the young”.
A spokeswoman added: “This latest incident puts a big question mark over the suitability of the trust as a whole.”…”

Cotton: Feinstein to be investigated over leaked letter from Ford
Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office will be investigated to determine whether it leaked a confidential letter from one of Brett Kavanaugh’s accusers, Sen. Tom Cotton said Sunday.
Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, also said lawyers recommended to Christine Blasey Ford by Democrats will face a Washington, D.C., bar investigation for telling her that Senate Judiciary Committee staffers would not travel to California to interview her about her sexual-assault allegation.
“They have betrayed her,” Cotton said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “She has been victimized by Democrats … on a search-and-destroy mission for Brett Kavanaugh.”
He also said Democrats would be at fault if women become less likely to report sexual assaults now because they did not keep Ford’s request confidential, as she had asked.
Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, had received a letter from Ford some months ago describing the incident with Kavanaugh but had kept the material confidential, as requested in the letter. At some point, information about Ford was leaked to the press, though the California Democrat denied that she or her office were responsible.
The FBI investigation into Ford’s sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh is unlikely to bring any new evidence to light, Cotton said, adding that the Judiciary Committee had already conducted interviews and/or received letters from people that Ford said attended the gathering at which the alleged assault occurred.
“We already know what everyone at the party has said,” he said, adding that the investigation will likely make a few senators more comfortable about voting to confirm Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Julie Swetnick Becomes First Accuser To Speak On Camera
3rd Kavanaugh accuser has history of legal disputes
WASHINGTON (AP) — Julie Swetnick, one of the women who has publicly accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, has an extensive history of involvement in legal disputes, including a lawsuit in which an ex-employer accused her of falsifying her college and work history on her job application.
Legal documents from Maryland, Oregon and Florida provide a partial picture of a woman who stepped into the media glare amid the battle over Kavanaugh’s nomination for the nation’s highest court.
Court records reviewed by The Associated Press show Swetnick has been involved in at least six legal cases over the past 25 years. Along with the lawsuit filed by a former employer in November 2000, the cases include a personal injury suit she filed in 1994 against the Washington, D.C., regional transit authority.
Her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, told the AP that court cases involving her have no bearing on the credibility of her claims about Kavanaugh. Avenatti said the suit from her ex-employer — it was dismissed a month after it was filed — was “completely bogus, which is why it was dismissed almost immediately.”
He told AP that he “fully vetted” Swetnick before helping her take her claims against Kavanaugh public.
Avenatti released a sworn statement by Swetnick this past week in which she says she witnessed Kavanaugh “consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s.” In the statement, which was provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Swetnick said she had been sexually assaulted at a party attended by members of Kavanaugh’s social circle, but did not accuse him of assaulting her. Two other women have publicly accused Kavanaugh of sexually abusing them.
One of those women, Christine Blasey Ford, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday to offer emotional testimony that even Kavanaugh’s most ardent backers, including Trump, said they found credible. Another woman, Deborah Ramirez, has accused Kavanaugh of exposing himself to her during a drunken party when both were students at Yale University. Friends and colleagues of Ramirez describe her as a quiet person who has dedicated herself to being an advocate for needy families and survivors of domestic violence.
Swetnick was the third named Kavanaugh accuser to emerge, when Avenatti released details of her accusations on Twitter on the eve of Ford’s testimony.
Kavanaugh has denied the claims regarding him made by Swetnick and other women, characterizing some of the allegations as a “joke” and a “farce.”
Ann Simonton, a nationally recognized advocate for rape survivors and director of Media Watch, a media literacy organization, cautioned that many sexual abuse survivors encounter chaos and trouble later in life — things can tarnish a survivor’s image but don’t necessarily speak to the legitimacy of the underlying abuse allegations. “This type of trauma will impact your daily life forever,” she said.
Swetnick, who is from the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., has said she is willing to be interviewed by either Congress or the FBI. On Twitter, Avenatti wrote that he and Swetnick would “thoroughly enjoy” embarrassing Republicans on the Judiciary Committee this weekend “when her story is told and is deemed credible.” Swetnick has taped an interview with “The Circus,” a political program that is part of Showtime’s Sunday lineup.
Some details of the legal disputes she’s been involved in aren’t known, because documents in the cases are incomplete or no longer available. Records in the lawsuit filed in late 2000 by her ex-employer, Oregon-based software company Webtrends, don’t indicate why it was dismissed. Avenatti said there was a settlement in the case but no money changed hands.
In its civil complaint in a state court in Oregon, the company said Swetnick, a software engineer, was an employee for a few weeks before its human resources department received a report that she had engaged in “unwelcome sexual innuendo and inappropriate conduct” toward two male co-workers at a business lunch.
The lawsuit said that Swetnick in turn accused Webtrends of subjecting her to “physically and emotionally threatening and hostile conditions” and that she claimed that she’d been sexually harassed by four co-workers. The co-workers denied the allegations, the suit said.
Company officials later determined, the suit said, that Swetnick had provided false information on her employment application. The suit alleged that she had misrepresented the length of time she worked at a previous employer and falsely claimed that she’d earned an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Johns Hopkins University.
Her lawyer, Avenatti, said that “whether she has a college degree or not does not matter as to whether she is a sexual assault victim.”
Helene Moglen, Swetnick’s aunt, told AP this week that her niece went off to college but quickly moved back home. In an interview with The Washington Post, Swetnick’s father was quoted as saying that “she bootstrapped herself and became a computer expert. She’s a sharp woman.”
None of the executives named in the lawsuit still works at Webtrends. Calls and emails to the company’s Portland headquarters seeking comment received no response. The lawyer who represented the company in the lawsuit also did not return messages seeking comment on Thursday and Friday.
Swetnick was on the other side of a civil case in 1994, as a plaintiff, when she filed a personal injury lawsuit in Maryland against the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. She claimed she lost more than $420,000 in earnings after she hurt her nose in a fall on a train in 1992.
Swetnick, who described herself in court records as a model and actor, claimed she had “numerous modeling commitments” with several companies at the time of the accident but missed out them because of her injuries.
To support her claim for lost wages, Swetnick named “Konam Studios” as one of the companies promising to employ her. A court filing identified Nam Ko, a representative of “Kunam Studios,” as a possible plaintiff’s witness for her case.
Ko, however, told AP on Friday that he was just a friend of Swetnick’s and that he had never owned a company with a name spelled either way and had never agreed to pay her money for any work before she injured her nose. He said he first met Swetnick at a bar more than a year after her alleged accident.
“I didn’t have any money back then. I (was) broke as can be,” Ko said.
Ko said he has a hazy memory of Swetnick asking to use him as a “character reference” but doesn’t recall hearing about her lawsuit.
“I thought it was for a job application,” he said.
In answer to questions about the suit, Avenatti said: “This is all hearsay. … None of this is relevant, not one bit.”
The paperwork filed in the suit includes a letter addressed to Swetnick’s attorney from Richard Zamora, who is identified as a marketing executive from a San Jose, California-based company called Fiber Sign Inc. In the letter, dated March 1994, Zamora said the company had been prepared to hire Swetnick as a model and spokeswoman and pay her a $60,000 base salary but offered the job to someone else after learning of her accident.
Zamora later asked a court in Florida for a restraining order against Swetnick. The remaining court records don’t show the reasons he gave for asking for the restraining order, but indicate that the case was dropped less than two weeks later when neither party appeared in court.
Zamora, who now goes by Richard Vinneccy, declined to comment to AP this week about the letter or the nature of the relationship he’d had with Swetnick.
Avenatti said the request for a restraining order was “nonsense.”
Court records show Swetnick’s lawsuit against the transit agency was dismissed in 1997 after a settlement was reached. Vincent Jankoski, one of the lawyers who defended the agency, said the case was resolved without paying Swetnick any money after she failed to provide documentation supporting her lost-wage claims.

It’s Not Kavanaugh. It’s Roe.
I do not know if Brett Kavanaugh is guilty of what he’s accused of doing when he was a teenager. His innocence or guilt is a separate matter.
What I do know is that the anti-Kavanaughs — i.e. the Left, the Democrats — could not care less whether he’s innocent or guilty. They do not care what he may have done as an intoxicated teen. Nor are they racing to defend the honor of Ms. Ford.
These, after all, are die-hard supporters of Bill Clinton, who committed adultery in the Oval Office as President. Clinton also remains credibly accused of rape and sexual assault by multiple women, all while he was a married adult, not an immature teenager.
That undying support is also extended to Hillary Clinton, whose “women should be believed” motto only applies to certain women, provided they are accusing the right man.
Before Clinton, it was the “Lion of the Senate” Ted Kennedy who enjoyed the same undying adulation and support. Kennedy literally left a woman to drown, and still he spent decades as the Democrat’s hero. Mary Jo Kopechne died trapped in Kennedy’s car under water, while Kennedy saved his own life and career. And how the people loved him. Manslaughter is such a teensy little mistake.
No, I don’t believe for a nanosecond that the Democrats care one whit about Kavanaugh’s innocence or guilt. Their moral indignation is phonier than a $3 dollar bill. (By the way, does Rep. Keith Ellison still have a job?)
This is about abortion. It’s about the larger sexual ideology as well, but abortion first and foremost. This is about nothing more than demolishing a candidate for the Supreme Court whom they did not choose, and who poses a serious threat to their golden idol. Abortion is both sacrament and god.
Any honest observer has to be repulsed by the histrionics displayed during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings. Screaming women raving like lunatics about one thing: abortion-on-demand. At the thought that they may not be able to extinguish the natural results of their sexual encounters, that the child they help create is a human being they are obligated to protect, the pelvic Left becomes absolutely unhinged. Unhinged is even too inadequate a word. It’s like the behavior of demons about to be exorcised.
A country that shrugs off the evidence of what abortion really is and chants all the louder about “freedom” and “equality” can never claim to achieve either. Roe v. Wade is the litmus test to end all litmus tests. That’s because abortion is the moral “issue” to end all issues. It is uniquely defining of a culture and an individual. People who support the act of butchering the most defenseless and innocent of all human beings, blithely calling it “choice” can hardly plant their flag on a civilized hill.
A nation that considers killing its own children to be the pièce de résistance of its fight for empowerment and justice is suffering a suicidal delusion.

And that’s precisely what we’ve got here in America. The delusion is so hypnotic and addictive that nothing must be permitted to question it or come against it. There must be sexual pleasure without price. Nothing matters more than sexual gratification. The god of the groin is perpetually unsatisfied and greedy.
So the modern sophisticated pagans want to continue exposing the unwanted child to birds of prey on a rock in the midday sun. The allegiance they require to abortion-on-demand is no different and no better. Except that today they remove those lucrative brains and organs first. (I guess our ancestors didn’t know there was money to be made from baby body parts.)
After 45 years of this demonic delusion, with millions of babies picked apart by vultures in lab coats, along comes the possibility that finally the most sickening injustice of all time may be undone, and the pelvic Left is twelve different kinds of hysterical.
They don’t hate Brett Kavanaugh because of anything he may have done over thirty years ago. Any transgression can be forgiven if fervent devotion to abortion is manifest.

Toronto police have identified the man arrested Friday evening in connection with a string of car tires slashed in Leslieville.
55 Division issued a public safety alert yesterday, warning local residents that 60 cases of vandalism to vehicles were reported in the area of Gerrard St. E. to Eastern Ave., and Boulton Ave. to Marjory Ave., since July 1.
Multiple residents told the Star they were angry and frustrated at the repeated slashings. Several had their tires cut more than once.
Ahmad Zafar, 28, of Toronto was arrested Friday at 9 p.m. and was charged with 78 counts of mischief/damage to property not exceeding $5,000. He appeared in court Saturday at 10 a.m.

Javed said the Muslim community began its journey to find a home in 2005, when the Whitehorse United Church welcomed Muslims to use the space to pray. Then in 2009, Javed said they rented a small apartment in the city to use for prayer.
Now, there is at least one mosque in every province and territory in the country, noted Javed.
"This completes the North. This completes the territories. I call it the Star Trek mosque," said Hussein ?Guisti, from the Zubaidah Tallab Foundation, a small charity that helped build a mosque in Thompson, Man.
"Congratulations for turning a trucking warehouse into a mosque. Well done," said Angelique Bernard, the commissioner of Yukon, garnering cheers from the crowd.
The same builder that installed mosques in Inuvik, N.W.T., and Iqaluit began construction on the low, metal-plated trucking warehouse in April.
Fathallah Farajat of Hamilton, Ont., built the mosque, and says it took about four people to renovate the building at a time.
"It's done now, everything's done," said Farajat, who started his career building custom cabinets and worked his way up to building mosques.
"I'm so happy here. The community's happy here."
Farajat says his next project is to work on building the mosque in Yellowknife.
"We're very proud of my dad," said Halla Farajat, his daughter, who came to Whitehorse with the family to see her dad's work.

Rome (AFP) – Italy’s powerful deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini said Saturday “I do not care” if the EU Commission rejects his budget plans.
“No-one in Brussels can tell me it is not time,” the head of the populist League (Lega) party told a meeting in the Italian capital.
“If Brussels says I cannot do it, I do not care, I will do it anyway,” the outspoken leader vowed.
Italy’s new coalition government has drafted a budget that raises spending, pushes the public deficit target to around 2.4 percent of gross domestic product for the next three years, and probably hikes the public debt above its current level of 131 percent of GDP.
The previous government was aiming for a deficit of 0.8 percent of GDP that would help cut debt but possibly hamper economic growth.
A warning by EU officials on Friday about Italy’s deficit troubled financial markets and pushed up the cost of borrowing for the government.
“It is a budget which appears to be beyond the limits of our shared rules,” noted Pierre Moscovici, who runs the EU Commission’s economic and finance portfolio.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella warned the government Saturday that the constitution requires a balanced budget and sustainable public debt.

A Tunisian imam has been expelled from Italy after it was revealed that he had celebrated the Berlin Christmas Market terror attack in December of 2016 from his prison cell.
The 32-year-old imam, who had been convicted of robbery and drug dealing, was serving his sentence at the Rebibbia prison in Rome where he praised Islamic State and terrorist acts, Il Giornale reports.
One of the attacks the imam celebrated was the 2016 Berlin Christmas Market attack in which fellow Tunisian Anis Amri used a truck to run over multiple innocent people, killing a dozen and injuring 56 others. After the attack, it was revealed that Amri was said to have been radicalised in an Italian prison.
The imam was also said to have been spreading radical Islamic radical ideology among the prisoners and was said to be ready to imitate the deeds of Amri and commit a terror attack.
The expulsion order came after the 32-year-old had served his prison sentence and was set for release on August 22nd. Instead of being released, he was transferred to a repatriation centre along with three Egyptian nationals who were considered threats to Italian national security.

British authorities were forced to destroy over 100,000 pounds of onions which were “contaminated” by illegal migrants discovered hiding in delivery lorries.
Border Force officials discovered more than twenty illegal migrants who identified themselves as being from Afghanistan, Albania, Iran, and Iraq — all Muslim-majority countries — in two separate incidents in the Port of Poole, the Dorset Echo reports.
“In June 2017 and January 2018, a total of 47,000 kilograms of onions were surrendered at the Port of Poole following the discovery of clandestine migrants in two vehicles that were being used to transport the goods,” explained Peter Haikin, the Borough of Poole’s Regulatory Services Manager.
“As a result of the discoveries, all of the produce was disposed of to ensure that no contaminated goods would end up in any restaurants or supermarkets.”
He added: “Borough of Poole continues to work closely with authorities to ensure that produce being provided to restaurants, supermarkets and distributors is safe for consumption.”
The high street value of the destroyed onions was estimated at over £35,000.

Moral panics, or instances of mass hysteria, have occurred throughout history. Two of the most notorious are the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 90s. The panics almost exclusively involve women and children and fears for their safety, especially from sexual abuse.
We are in the midst of another such panic, but despite the similarities to past episodes, we are still unable to recognize it as such. The current panic has been playing out in the military and on college campuses for nearly a decade, but with the advent of the #MeToo movement, the mass hysteria is creeping into our regular legal system as well. The following are five of the biggest signs that we are experiencing another bout of mass hysteria, this time over sexual assault and harassment.

Belgian MP Georges Dallemagne has expressed concern that the Grand Mosque of Brussels may have resumed more hardline sermons and may be continuing to preach hate.
Mr Dallemagne said earlier this week that he believed the leaders of the Grand Mosque were deceiving the authorities and “stringing them along” when it came to preaching more radical forms of Islam, Sudinfo reports.
The Islamic and Cultural Center of Belgium (CICB) which operates out of the Grand Mosque, has been accused of spreading Wahabbist ideology in the past by a report from the Belgian Unit for Coordination and Threat Analysis (OCAM), the contents of which was leaked earlier this year.
“The teaching of the Muslim religion of the Arab section of the Islamic and Cultural Center of Belgium is in no way adapted to the Belgian or European reference framework. Next year’s European Parliamentary elections should bring about a change in the community’s policy, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a radio interview on Friday, and warned that “the battle between pro-migration and anti-migration MEPs has not yet been decided”.

He said that while the EU seeks to resolve demographic problems through “importing people from Africa or Asia”, Hungary “needs Hungarian people”. He insisted that “more babies require families and a family requires a mother and a father – possibly a woman and a man”.

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) – Authorities said two Tucson men posed as ride-share drivers and tried to sexually assault women.
The Tucson Police Department said Abdifatah Muktar, 23, and Berhan Hiabu, 22, have been arrested on multiple felony charges.
Muktar is facing charges of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit sexual assault. Hiabu is facing charges of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and conspiracy to commit sexual assault.
The TPD said the men were arrested Thursday and Friday following two incidents.
In the first, a woman used a ride-share service. Muktar picked her up and drove her home.
Authorities said Muktar claimed the woman made a mess in his vehicle and demanded payment. The victim offered to have the car cleaned, so both headed to a car wash.
The victim said she didn’t see a mess in the vehicle and asked for a ride home. Muktar refused, but claimed he could get a different ride-share driver to do it.

Sexual assault has been a topic at the forefront of the media because of the controversy surrounding the Supreme Court Justice nomination process. Judge Kavanaugh was accused by four women of sexual assault, something that has stalled his nomination process. While Democrats have taken action to stall the process, accusers who are pointing blame at Democratic leadership are starting to come out of the woodwork.

This summer, I’ve read two collections of short stories: The Execution of Mayor Yin and Other Stories from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution by Chen Jo-hsi and The Accusation: Forbidden Stories from Inside North Korea by Bandi. The two books were written in different places and times, but both tell what it’s like for ordinary people to live under a communist regime.
Chen, the author of The Execution of Mayor Yin, is a Taiwanese native who studied in the United States, where she married a Chinese graduate student. They moved to mainland China in 1966 at the start of the Cultural Revolution, the left after seven years: Chen wrote the eight stories between 1974 and 1976.
The author of The Accusation, on the other hand, is an anonymous dissident still living in North Korea. Bandi—the name means “firefly” in Korean—wrote stories depicting life under the totalitarian Kim regime between 1989 and 1995. The manuscript was smuggled out of the country in 2013 and published in 17 languages around the world.

Unique underwater sculpture in Maldives destroyed for not being Islamic:

A unique underwater sculpture exhibit at a Maldives resort was destroyed on order of the country’s president after it was deemed to violate Islamic beliefs.
President Abdulla Yameen said the country’s religious leaders had complained that the sculpture represented idols, which are banned by Islam. Strict Islam bans any manmade depiction of the human form.
The project, called the Coralarium, was created by British artist Jason DeCaires Taylor to bring attention to rising sea levels.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A lawsuit alleging that Harvard University’s admissions practice discriminates against Asian Americans is officially headed to trial.
The judge overseeing the case rejected motions from both sides Friday asking to rule on their behalf. The judge says there’s still too much in dispute.
The group Students For Fair Admissions filed the suit in 2014. It says Asian American applicants have the best academic records but the lowest admission rate among any race.
Harvard denies any bias and says it considers race only as one of many factors in deciding which students to admit.

“I believe that destroying something without having developed something new is extremely dangerous,” Merkel said at a regional election campaign event in Bavaria.
The veteran leader — a close ally of Trump’s bugbear Barack Obama while he was president — added that she believed multilateralism was the solution to many of the world’s problems.
Trump failed to see the possibility for win-win solutions, she said, instead seeing only one winner from any international negotiation.
In his second appearance before the UN’s annual gathering last week, Trump told the General Assembly that he and his administration “reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism”.

New York resident Linda Sarsour may be a darling of the progressive movement south of the border, but her impending presence at a Muslim community convention on Oct. 6 has prompted calls for organizers to dis-invite her and has led to at least two online petitions, one of which calls for her to be banned from entering Canada.
Sarsour, the co-founder of the Women’s March on Washington and a prominent critic of Israel, is slated to address the Carry the Light convention, which runs at The International Centre in Mississauga, Ont., on Oct. 6 and 7. The event is sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), an organization that has been accused of having links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and B’nai Brith Canada have raised concerns about Sarsour’s participation at the conference, noting her support for Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Meanwhile, a petition posted by the Canadian Coalition for Responsible Government (CCRG) on the CitizenGO website is calling on the RCMP to prohibit Sarsour from entering the country. A second petition launched by B’nai Brith calls on ICNA to dis-invite Sarsour, as well as five other speakers.
