Around one hundred people turned out in New York to try to stop the nomination at the Supreme Court of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the appointed nominee of Donald Trump for the position left vacant by Judge Anthony Kennedy who retired on July 31.
The New York City protest was the flagship event of a larger nationwide with over 153 events in 50 states.

Syria: Assad meets Iranian Defence Minister in Damascus
Iranian Defence Minister, Brigadier General Amir Hatami visited Damascus on Sunday and met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
After meeting with Assad, Hatami met Syrian military authorities to strengthen their military cooperation.

Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami has arrived in Syria for a two-day visit to discuss a number of issues, including ways of expanding defense and military cooperation.
Hatami told reporters at Damascus airport on Sunday that the aim of the visit was to boost bilateral cooperation under the new conditions in Syria and its transition to the reconstruction phase.
“We hope to be able to have a productive role in the reconstruction of Syria,” Fars news agency quoted him as saying.
Hatami, who is being accompanied by a high-ranking delegation on the invitation of his Syrian counterpart General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, is due to meet senior defense and military officials as well as President Bashar al-Assad.
Fars said the most important topics for discussion were the review of the regional developments, the fight against terrorism, the strengthening of the resistance axis and the study of strategies for expansion of defense and military cooperation.
The two sides were also expected to sign an agreement on defense and military cooperation which will define the framework for bilateral cooperation.
At the start of his visit, Hatami congratulated Syria on its victories in the battle against terrorists, hailing them as a turning point in “the axis of resistance’s regional cooperation”.
His visit follows Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri’s trip to Syria last October.
Iran and Syria enjoy strategic relations. Syria was the only Arab country that supported Iran during the Iraqi-imposed war in 1980s.
At the request of Damascus, Iran has been providing military advisory assistance to the Syrian government forces who are fighting an all-out foreign-sponsored militancy.
Iran’s military presence in Syria is a thorn in the side of Israel. On April 9, an Israeli airstrike against the T-4 airbase in Syria’s Homs Province killed more than a dozen people, including seven Iranian military advisers.
Tel Aviv wants Syria to ask Iranian advisers to leave the country and dismantle what it claims to be Iranian military bases.
In an interview with the al-Alam News Network in June, Assad said Iran does not have any military bases in Syria, but if there is “a need for Iranian military bases, we will not hesitate.”
Assad said Damascus had invited Iran and Russia to Syria, unlike the American, French, Turkish and Israeli troops who are occupying forces.
In his remarks in Damascus Sunday, Hatami said, “No third party can affect the presence of Iranian advisers in Syria.”

U.S. Set to Reject Palestinian Fantasy of ‘Right of Return’
According to an Israeli TV news report, the Trump administration is preparing to formally reject the long-standing Palestinian demand of a “right to return” to lands lost since the 1948 war for Israel’s independence. The administration will also change the U.S. position on Palestinian refugees.

According to the Hadashot TV report Saturday, the US in early September will set out its policy on the issue. It will produce a report that says there are actually only some half-a-million Palestinians who should be legitimately considered refugees, and make plain that it rejects the UN designation under which the millions of descendants of the original refugees are also considered refugees. The definition is the basis for the activities of UNRWA, the UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
The US — which on Friday announced that it had decided to cut more than $200 million in aid to the Palestinians — and has also cut back its funding for UNRWA — will also ask Israel to “reconsider” the mandate that Israel gives to UNRWA to operate in the West Bank. The goal of such a change, the TV report said, would be to prevent Arab nations from legitimately channeling aid to UNRWA in the West Bank.
Created in 1949 in the wake of the 1948 War of Independence, UNRWA operates schools and provides health care and other social services to Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
Hadashot said the new US position represented a further endorsement of Israel’s positions, months after the administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocated the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The Palestinians have been playing the long con with the “right of return” issue, which was always more of a fantasy than reality. They conned the UN for years about the number of “refugees,” when in fact, the vast majority of Palestinians in refugee camps have no “right” to return to anything. Many were urged to leave by Arab leaders in 1948, others were abroad and never lived in Israel.

How Anti-Trump Hyperbole Fosters Insanity
One the strangest features of our political life in the United States today is the reckless abandon of our rhetoric. “Oh, that’s because Donald Trump has debased political discourse,” you say. “He calls women ‘dogs,’ he refers to Kim Jong-un as ‘Rocket Man,’ he says the press is ‘fake news’ and the ‘enemy of the people,’” etc., etc.
But that’s not the whole story, is it? Some diligent scribe should do a little historical digging and tabulate where, in each case of rhetorical Trumpery, the insults and opprobrium started. Did Donald Trump start the abuse? Or did his targets open hostilities?
In many, maybe most (maybe all) cases I suspect you will find that Trump’s invectives were rejoinders, i.e., responses to earlier provocations and expressions of contempt. Trump made fun of “low-energy Jeb,” but wasn’t that after Jeb said some pretty disagreeable things about Trump?
In any event, however the matter of precedent shakes out, there is also the issue of extreme rhetoric feeding extreme feelings and extreme actions. Simply put, the anti-Trump chorus has worked itself into a frenzy of trembling rage and hysterical overstatement. Trump is Hitler (literally); his behaviour is “treasonous” (or, as The New York Times put it, he is a “treasonous traitor”); he is a “fascist,” a “moron,” a “tyrant” who (as tyrants tend to do) is taking the United States down “the path to tyranny.” Et very much cetera.
Now in one sense this is just business as usual when a Republican is in office. Every GOP president going back at least to Nixon has been compared to Hitler. If Hitler hadn’t existed, the Left would have had to invent him. Even squeaky clean Mitt Romney was Hitler for a Day, an evil man who (maybe) once bullied a classmate in high school and later put the family dog in a cage on the roof of his car. Horrors!
All this is well-trod ground. If you’re conservative, you’re evil by definition and its open season as far as the mainstream media is concerned.
But the reaction to Donald Trump, although it began by following this playbook, has mutated into something different and more toxic.
One expression of that toxic difference is the cabal of former high-ranking government officials who, in a marked departure from past practice, have embarked on very public campaigns against the president. One thinks of jabbering John Brennan, Obama’s head of the CIA, for example. Brennan’s incontinent ravings on Twitter and on MSNBC have been as embarrassing as they are alarming. James Clapper, Obama’s director of national intelligence, has not been far behind in his commentary at CNN. And then there is the smarmiest of them all, Obama’s FBI director, the moist James Comey, who wrote a bestselling book about how noble and high-minded he is and how horrible and misguided is President Trump.
Once upon a time, and it was not a long time ago, people who had been entrusted with such august responsibilities would have maintained a dignified silence upon leaving office. Donald Trump has catalyzed them (as he has catalyzed Hillary Clinton) into an embarrassing emunctory garrulousness. (There is also the little matter of lucre: those contracts with CNN and MSNBC, those book advances and royalties.)
But there is something else, something darker and more twisted, at work here. In the Republic, Socrates notes that while many people may lie with abandon, the one thing no one can countenance is the “lie in the soul” that makes it impossible to distinguish reliably between truth and falsehood.
I suspect that anti-Trump hyperbole has insinuated such a reality-distorting lozenge into the hearts of many of the anti-Trump brethren.
Examples are legion, but let me offer just one, by Eliot Cohen, the crusading neo-conservative, from “How This Will End,” his most recent essay for The Atlantic. The column carries the sub-head “Sooner or later, tyrants are always abandoned by their followers.” “Tyrants,” forsooth.
Authors often are not responsible for the titles or headings that are attached to their pieces. But in this instance the headings accurately reflect the tenor of the column. According to Cohen, Donald Trump is a “tyrant” who will eventually (and probably soon) be abandoned by his disillusioned followers.
Cohen begins his exposition by recalling Watergate and the disintegration of the Nixon administration and isolation of the president.
Comparisons between Watergate and whatever unholy grail Robert Mueller is pursuing have been a staple of anti-Trump commentary since the investigation began. I think the comparison is strained and unconvincing, but it has become a standard trope and no one at this point can blame Eliot Cohen from inserting it as a throat-clearer at the beginning of his column.
But the comparison with Nixon is just the warm-up. The personage that Cohen thinks Trump really resembles is Macbeth, the regicide tyrant and usurper, the murderer of the families of rivals and all-round power-mad evil doer. Just like Macbeth, Cohen suggests, Trump will find himself scorned and abandoned by his followers. Actually, for Cohen, Trump is much worse than Macbeth, who at least was “faithful to his wife, has a conscience (that he overcomes), knows guilt and remorse, and has self-knowledge. He also has a pretty good command of the English language. In all these respects he is as unlike Trump as one can be.” Okee-doke.
“Really [to] get the feel for the Trump administration’s end,” Cohen writes, “we must turn to the finest political psychologist of them all, William Shakespeare.” Cohen then quotes this bit:

Hang loose about him, like a giant’s robe
Upon a dwarfish thief.
It would be interesting to ask Mike Pompeo or John Bolton or Jim Mattis about this characterization.

Media Justifies Ethnic Cleansing With Fake Stats About South African Farmers

The hedging isn’t hard to spot.
Is it 72% of the land or 72% of the land owned by individuals? There’s a huge difference. A sizable amount of South Africa’s land is actually owned by the government. That is, it’s owned by the ANC. Quite a lot of it is held by assorted organizations, including the tribal authorities of black South Africans.
For example, the Ingonyama Trust, controlled by the Zulu king, has 3 million hectares of land. The ANC’s decision to seize the king’s land has made fewer headlines, but has been even more explosive.
The Washington Post’s claim that “whites own 72 percent of the 37 million hectares held by individuals” has to be placed within the context of the 93 million acres of arable agricultural land in South Africa.
Even if the claim were true, that would amount to white farmers owning 27% of the agricultural land.
There’s a big difference between 27% and 72%.
But the land audit wasn’t addressing agricultural land. So even that claim isn’t true and doesn’t hold up.
The 2017 land audit stated that only 33% of the land in South Africa is owned by individuals. One report on the survey claimed that white South Africans own 23.6% of rural land.
The land audit is nevertheless the source of the 72% claim even though it doesn’t really address farmland. The South African Institute of Race Relations called the land audit a “deeply questionable” source. The media would not normally take statistics from a government intent on seizing land from farmers as absolutely reliable. That it chose to not only do so, in this case, is due to its political bias.
The media plucked a misleading statistic from a dubious report by a corrupt government bent on ethnic cleansing land seizures, and then somehow made it worse by removing most of the context.
The idea that 32,000 white commercial farmers control most of the land in South Africa is bizarre nonsense. And the media’s decision to imply that this is so, while misrepresenting the statistics, is a typical example of fake news. Worse still, it’s fake news in the service of racism and ethnic cleansing.

German police brace for rival protests after man is killed
BERLIN – Authorities in the eastern German city of Chemnitz were braced for rival protests Monday amid tensions over the killing of a German man for which an Iraqi and a Syrian have been arrested on charges of manslaughter.
Three men in their 30s were injured in the clash early Sunday, according to Chemnitz police. A 35-year-old German man later died of his injuries.
Prosecutors on Monday said the two men taken into custody — a 23-year-old Syrian and a 22 year-old Iraqi — were being held on suspicion of manslaughter, according to the dpa news agency. Their names and further details were not released.
Authorities said they were still investigating a possible motive for the killing.
Both far-right and left-wing groups planned to protest Monday night, public broadcaster MDR reported.
The killing already sparked spontaneous protests by hundreds of people late Sunday in Chemnitz, a city where almost a quarter voted for the far-right Alternative for Germany party last year. Videos posted on social media appeared to show far-right protesters threatening and chasing passers-by Sunday.
German government spokesman Steffen Seibert condemned the violence.
“What was seen yesterday in parts of Chemnitz and what was recorded on video has no place in our country,” Seibert told reporters Monday in Berlin.
“People ganging up, chasing people who look different from them or who come from elsewhere … is something we won’t tolerate,” he said. “This has no place in our cities and I can say for the German government that we condemn this in the sharpest possible manner.”
Seibert also criticized a far-right lawmaker who had suggested that German authorities were unable to protect citizens.
“There is no place in Germany for vigilantism, for groups that want to spread hatred on the streets, for intolerance and racism,” said Seibert.

Aug 27 (Reuters) – Iran has full control of the Gulf, and the U.S. Navy does not belong there, the head of the navy of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, General Alireza Tangsiri, said on Monday, according to the Tasnim news agency.
The remarks come at a time when Tehran has suggested that it could take military action in the Gulf to block oil exports of other regional countries in retaliation for U.S. sanctions intended to halt its oil sales. Washington maintains a fleet in the Gulf which protects oil shipping routes.
Tangsiri said Iran had full control of both the Gulf itself and the Strait of Hormuz that leads into it. Closing off the strait would be the most direct way of blocking shipping.
“We can ensure the security of the Persian Gulf and there is no need for the presence of aliens like the U.S. and the countries whose home is not in here,” he said in the quote, which appeared in English translation on Tasnim.
Tension between Iran and the United States has escalated since President Donald Trump pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in May and reimposed sanctions.
Senior U.S. officials have said they aim to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero.

GENEVA (Reuters) – Myanmar’s military carried out mass killings and gang rapes of Muslim Rohingya with “genocidal intent” and the commander-in-chief and five generals should be prosecuted for orchestrating the gravest crimes under law, U.N. investigators said on Monday.
The civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi has allowed hate speech to thrive, destroyed documents and failed to protect minorities from crimes against humanity and war crimes by the army in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan states, they said in a report.
In doing so, it “contributed to the commission of atrocity crimes”, the report said.
A year ago, government troops led a brutal crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in response to attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) on 30 Myanmar police posts and a military base.
Some 700,000 Rohingya fled the crackdown and most are now living in refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh.
The U.N. report said the military action, which included the scorching of villages, was “grossly disproportionate to actual security threats”.

The participants were said to include former Obama national security officials Ben “Echo Chamber” Rhodes and Colin Kahl, among others, along with at least half a dozen well-known media figures.
Entous and Farrow depicted the memo as basically a conspiracy theory, encapsulated in a document that “read like a U.S. military-intelligence officer’s analysis of a foreign-insurgent network.” Said the article:

That was pretty much the experience of 22-year-old Krystal Lake, who wore a hat with that message to her job at a Home Depot on Staten Island. She claims nasty things were said to her on social media, including threats on her life. However, no customer in this heavily conservative oasis in deep-blue New York City approached her and spit on her shoes, which is what happened to a man wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in Central Park.

More than half of them were born outside Europe, particularly the Middle East or Africa. In cases where the rapist and the victim were unknown to each other, the percentage of non-Europeans jumped to 75 percent, with 40 percent of the rapists having lived in Sweden a year or less.
Conservative spokesman Tomas Tobé argued that talking about immigration issues has always been problematic in Sweden, citing a certain interest in keeping the debate under control.
Sweden Democrats parliamentary group leader Mattias Karlsson argued that the debate was only natural.
“In the past 20 years, Sweden has undergone a radical demographic change. Therefore, it is clearly important to have control over how it affects society, otherwise you won’t know how to curb the problems that occur,” Karlsson said.
Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson stressed that the entire concept of asylum, which he called outdated, is based on refugees seeking their way to the nearest country.
“This is something even Jesus did, he fled to the nearest country, not Sweden,” Åkesson said during a recent debate, as quoted by the newspaper Dagen. “There are billions of people in the world living in extreme poverty and for whom you cannot but feel sorry, but everyone just cannot come to Sweden,” he said, suggesting that his country should focus on helping people in the surrounding area.
Until recently, the Sweden Democrats had been Sweden’s only party pushing for limiting immigration. Today, this narrative has permeated the right-of-center parties, most strikingly the newly founded Alternative for Sweden party, whose leaders openly advocate repatriating hundreds of thousands of immigrants.

The anti-Islamization movement PEGIDA is urging locals to continue protests in Chemnitz following the murder of the 35-year-old German.

Lanny Davis, an attorney for Michael Cohen, is backtracking from his stunning claim that President Donald Trump had advance knowledge of Russian hacking efforts.
During interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday, Davis laid out a grave allegation against Trump, saying that Cohen had information that would be of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller, including about Russian hacking of Democrats’ emails.
In an interview Tuesday with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Davis said Cohen, a former lawyer for Trump, has “knowledge about the computer crime of hacking and whether or not Mr. Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on.”

WITCH HUNT: Pelosi Already Has Over A HUNDRED Investigations Ready For Trump If Dems Win The House
A leaked document shows that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi already has over 100 investigations ready for President Donald Trump if Democrats retake the House of Representatives in November’s midterm election.
According to Axios, a spreadsheet is circulating among House GOP leaders that details the more than 100 potential investigations Pelosi and Democrats will launch into Trump. Democrats intend to impeach Trump, or, at the very least, harm his presidency as much as possible.
The document claims that Republicans are “getting ready for hell,” as Democrats will use their majorities on oversight to create gridlock if they win the House. More importantly, Axios reports that Democrats have already made the list, meaning this is not an “idea” or “plan” — they have compiled a list of more than 100 investigations they will trigger if the GOP loses the majority in the House.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center won a major battle on Friday afternoon, defeating well-financed leftwing groups trying to run it out of business and suffocate free speech in our country.
Here is what happened. Last Tuesday the Freedom Center was informed by WorldPay, which handles its online donations, that Mastercard would no longer complete transactions for the Freedom Center because it had been labeled a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center and a similarly leftist organization called Color of Change.org. This is what we were told by MasterCard: “The organization Color of Change has published an updated website named bloodmoney.org and within it has listed a number of merchants that purport to accept Mastercard and have content which is hateful in nature. .. [and] which may be advocating for violence. We have identified the sites below as belonging to your institution…”
Just as in Alice in Wonderland: the verdict before the trial. The Freedom Center was judged guilty of “hate crimes” without a chance to protest and its online fundraising was blocked. Because on line fundraising is the lifeblood of our organization, this was an existential threat to our future. We were mobilizing for a costly legal proceeding against Mastercard when, on Friday afternoon, four days after the attempt to destroy us, WorldPay and MasterCard backed down and informed us they were restoring our online services and donations.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s dictum about no second acts in American life is only partially true. There are second acts, but those that fail to live up to the promise of the first are far more interesting. An assessment of John McCain’s political career suggests that the Senator from Arizona squandered the immense capital of his five and a half years of bravery and integrity while a captive in Viet Nam.
McCain’s earlier career reminds one of George Armstrong Custer, another “maverick” whose reckless audacity won him plaudits during the Civil War, but ended in failure at the Little Big Horn. McCain was an indifferent student at the Naval Academy, and at times a careless pilot. During flight training he dumped a jet in Corpus Christi Bay, and while flying too low in Spain took out some power lines. At this point he seems to have been, like several Kennedys, a typical feckless scion of a storied American family whose elite connections mitigated his questionable behavior.
But McCain redeemed himself with his heroism during his captivity in Viet Nam. Regularly tortured and abused, enduring disease and solitary confinement, he turned down an offer to be released ahead of other captives who had been there longer. He ended his first act as an iconic American hero, tough in the face of brutal treatment, and committed to the very American sense of fair play that eschewed exploiting for his own gain his father’s status as head of the U.S. Pacific Command. Finally released in 1973, McCain was poised, like many other celebrated military veterans in American history, for a political career likely to end in the White House.

Media Justifies Ethnic Cleansing With Fake Stats About South African Farmers

After President Trump tweeted about the mistreatment of white farmers in South Africa, the media rushed out stories justifying the ANC regime’s plans to ethnically cleanse white farmers by seizing land without compensation. These stories invariably contained a popular fake statistic abused by racists.
Bloomberg pretended to conduct a fact check by accusing Trump of misleading the public and claimed that, a “land audit released in February showed that whites own 72 percent of the land.”
“Land reform is a highly divisive issue in South Africa, where white residents, who make up 8 percent of the population, own 72 percent of land, according to official figures,” the New York Times observed.
“Whites own 72 percent of the 37 million hectares held by individuals,” the Washington Post contended.
The hedging isn’t hard to spot.
Is it 72% of the land or 72% of the land owned by individuals? There’s a huge difference. A sizable amount of South Africa’s land is actually owned by the government. That is, it’s owned by the ANC. Quite a lot of it is held by assorted organizations, including the tribal authorities of black South Africans.
For example, the Ingonyama Trust, controlled by the Zulu king, has 3 million hectares of land. The ANC’s decision to seize the king’s land has made fewer headlines, but has been even more explosive.

John Brennan became head of the Central Intelligence agency in 2013 and after leaving in 2017 he retained his security clearance, which President Trump recently revoked. Brennan is threatening a lawsuit, a prospect that delights the president’s lead lawyer.
“I’d volunteer to do that case for the president,” Rudy Giuliani told Fox News. “I’d love to have Brennan under oath for I don’t know how many days, two or three days? We’ll find out about Brennan.” As the former New York mayor is doubtless aware, there is plenty to find out. Consider, for example, Brennan’s role in the famous passport case.
Back in 2008, State Department contractors “unnecessarily reviewed” the passport file of Illinois Senator Barack Obama. The breach came without the knowledge of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who called the senator to apologize. “I myself would be very disturbed if I learned somebody had looked into my passport file,” Rice told reporters.
According to the State Department, two of the contract employees were fired for the security breach and a third was disciplined but remained on the job. The department did not reveal the identities of the employees nor what they might have been looking for in the presidential candidate’s passport file. On the other hand, some information did emerge.

Chicago man arrested for threatening conference where Sessions said ‘Lock her up’
A Chicago-area man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to “shoot” and “blow up” the conference of conservative high school students held in Washington last month that grabbed headlines when the featured speaker, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, uttered the phrase “lock her up.”
28-year-old Alexander Micah Cohen was arrested outside Chicago late last month, according to authorities in Cook County, Illinois.
The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., launched an investigation into the alleged threats after the parent of a student attending the conference saw some of Cohen’s messages posted online and contacted the FBI.
When an MPD officer then contacted Cohen, he insisted his comments were “a joke,” according to an account from the officer filed in court. Cohen has now been charged with attempting to make a false report connected to a weapon of mass destruction.
Appearing in D.C. Superior Court on Friday, Cohen pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. He was released on his own recognizance.

Thousands of Saudi students have to leave Canada because their governments are fighting, so they’re frantically selling their furniture, cars
The diplomatic feud between Canada and Saudi Arabia means that around 8,000 Saudi students studying in Canada have to leave the country by August 31 — leaving them scrambling to sell off their belongings.
The Saudi government announced on August 7 that it would recall students on government grants or scholarships from Canada. Since then, students have been trying to sell all their belongings online and in garage sales — from pots and pans to chairs to cars.
The Ummah Mosque and community centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, held two garage sales on August 12 and August 17 to help the students sell their belongings.
Imam Abdullah Yousri, who runs the mosque, said he decided to hold the sales when he saw so many students were trying to get rid of their stuff online.
He told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: “They’re selling their cars, their homes, their furniture — everything. So we thought this is the best way to help them to do so.”
He added on the Facebook event page for one of the garage sales: “Such garage sale is open for all the community but especially our Saudi student brethren to assist them in the sale of their belongings.”
Here’s what the first garage sale looked like.
It was so successful that the mosque held a second one for cars later that week. The cars on sale that day included 2010 Dodge Journey and a 2010 Hyundai Sonata, according to a Facebook Marketplace ad for the event.
Those selling their cars online also revealed their sadness at having to part with their vehicles.
One student selling a 2018 Nissan Rogue S on Facebook in Ontario said he was “an unfortunate Saudi Student who is been forced to leave Canada due to the clash with Saudi Arabia”.
“When I have purchased this car, it meant to be my everlasting but sometimes you have no option. It is still like-new brand car, everything is awesome and perfect,” he added. “I have oil sprayed it this summer to be ready for the winter, but sadly I won’t even stay for the fall (autumn)!”
Elsewhere, many students are selling tables, televisions, chairs, and shelves on Facebook Marketplace, while others are using Kijiji, a Canadian buy-and-sell website, to get rid of prams and mattresses.
How the feud came to be
Saudi Arabia announced on August 7 that it would withdraw all students it had been sponsoring in Canadian universities after Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s foreign minister, criticised Saudi Arabia’s human rights record on Twitter.
Freeland had been responding to the news that the Saudi government arrested several activists, including the sister of a Canadian citizen. In response, Saudi Arabia expelled the Canadian ambassador, froze all new investment, and cancelled all flights to Toronto.
Neither country is willing to back down, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying on Thursday that his government is continuing to “engage diplomatically” with Saudi Arabia, but that he is “concerned” after news broke that a Saudi woman is facing a death sentence for her political activism.
Canadian universities have been trying to support their Saudi students in wake of the new policy. Five universities said on Wednesday that the Saudi trainee doctors enrolled in their programmes had been granted an extra three weeks in the country, and can stay until September 22, according to Reuters.
The University of Toronto’s vice-provost for international student experience, Joseph Wong, also said in a statement: “This is a very stressful time for these students. Their studies have been interrupted, and we want to help them to continue their education.
“We will be working with them, our colleagues at other universities and with government officials, as the situation continues to evolve.”
