He was previously U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for international law enforcement, where he was one of the architects of U.S. international policies and strategies on promoting and harmonizing financial transparency, as well as on cross-border law enforcement issues such as cybercrime, small arms trafficking, illegal immigration, and money laundering. He initiated the establishment of International Law Enforcement Academies in Bangkok and Gaborone and served as the first General Secretary of the Global Forum on Corruption.
Mr. Winer previously served for 10 years as counsel and principal legislative assistant to then-U.S. Senator John F. Kerry. In November 1999, Mr. Winer received a distinguished honor award from Secretary of State Madeleine Albright for his service at the State Department. The award stated that “he created the capacity of the Department and the U.S. government to deal with international crime and criminal justice as important foreign policy functions,” and that “the scope and significance of his achievements are virtually unprecedented for any single official.”

Jonathan Winer, a former deputy secretary at the US State Department and the man who gave the department the Steele dossier, says the core of the dossier had information about Russian interference that Christopher Steele felt the US should have.

Friday’s Washington Post featured an op-ed by an old Washington hand, late of the State Department, who was right in the middle of the dossier affair, a Mr. Jonathan M. Winer. His byline bio identifies him as “a Washington lawyer and consultant,” and “a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of State for international law enforcement and former special envoy for Libya.” In the print edition of the paper, the op-ed is headlined with the straightforward “My role in the Trump dossier.” Online, Winer’s story got a somewhat more self-pitying, self-aggrandizing treatment: “Devin Nunes is investigating me. Here’s the truth.”
Whatever the headline, as an effort at self-justification Winer’s effort is an epic fail. Rather than putting to rest questions about the origin and dissemination of the Trump dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, Winer’s account leaves the reader slack-jawed at the remarkable coincidences he cites and the astonishing characters who just happen to turn up in his narrative.
As Winer tells it, he and Steele were old pals. They “met and became friends” in 2009, when both were in the business of selling “business intelligence,” much of it involving Russia. Winer went back to work at State in 2013, after his old Capitol Hill boss, John Kerry, had become secretary of State. But he didn’t lose track of his friend Steele—not at all. He shared, and shared, and shared Steele’s corporate intelligence work with the State Department’s Russia desk. “Over the next two years, I shared more than 100 of Steele’s reports with the Russia experts at the State Department, who continued to find them useful.” (Let’s not speculate about how much it may have been worth to Steele to be able to tell his clients that the materials they were paying for were being regularly consumed by policy-makers in Foggy Bottom.)
Come the summer of 2016, Steele’s prime client was the campaign of Hillary Clinton, by way of the hired-guns at Fusion GPS, for whom he was assembling a grab bag of Trump tales from some sort of Russian sources. Come the fall Steele was spreading dossier info to various news organizations, the FBI, and the State Department. “In September 2016, Steele and I met in Washington and discussed the information now known as the ‘dossier.’” Here’s where it starts getting particularly weird: “I was allowed to review, but not to keep, a copy of these reports to enable me to alert the State Department,” Winer writes. “I prepared a two-page summary and shared it with [Winer’s boss at State, Victoria] Nuland.” I doubt I’m the only one who finds this bit of peekaboo passing strange.
To hear Winer tell it, when he gave her his memo, Nuland was all for the State Department doing something about it: She “indicated that, like me, she felt that the secretary of State needed to be made aware of this material.” Maybe. But to hear Nuland tell it, she recognized the dossier for what it was: “What I did was say that this is about U.S. politics, and not the work of—not the business of the State Department,” Nuland said in an interview with Politico, “and certainly not the business of a career employee who is subject to the Hatch Act, which requires that you stay out of politics. So, my advice to those who were interfacing with [Steele] was that he should get this information to the FBI, and that they could evaluate whether they thought it was credible.”
But according to his piece in the Post, Winer had other people to share the Steele info with, too: “In late September, I spoke with an old friend, Sidney Blumenthal.” Given Blumenthal’s well-earned reputation as a Clinton hatchet-man, the words “old friend, Sidney Blumenthal” should be telling, if not alarming. So what was the nub of the conversation between these two old friends who just happen to have gotten together in the thick of a presidential campaign? Perhaps they were talking Libya—Blumenthal had been trying for some time to get federal contracts for work in Libya, and Winer was the special envoy to the war-wracked country. But no, they ended up talking about the dossier. You see, it just sort of came up naturally: Blumenthal’s emails had been hacked a few years before, and so “While talking about that hacking, Blumenthal and I discussed Steele’s report.” You’d think that Sid would have been gob-smacked, astonished at the information sleuthing spook Steele had unearthed. Instead, and ever so matter-of-factly, Blumenthal pulled out a dossier of his own: “He showed me notes gathered by a journalist I did not know, Cody Shearer, that alleged the Russians had compromising information on Trump of a sexual and financial nature.”
That’s right, Blumenthal had a dossier of his own, compiled by a Clinton crony of decades’ standing, Cody Shearer, and right at the ready. What are the odds?
If this extra dossier is as contrived as it sounds, it wouldn’t be the first time that Shearer peddled fabulous information against a Republican presidential ticket in the waning days of a Clinton campaign. In 1992 Shearer championed the phony story that a poor fellow named Brett Kimberlin was rotting in an Indiana jail, being kept incommunicado so that he couldn’t tell the world about how Vice President Dan Quayle bought marijuana from him back in the 1970s. Yes, Kimberlin was a drug smuggler, and yes, he was indeed in jail—for a string of terroristic bombings in Indianapolis. Shearer was willing to promote the fantastical tales of the “Speedway Bomber” if that helped his friends the Clintons.
Winer seems not to have been at all astonished that two of his old friends—Steele and Blumenthal—themselves unacquainted, should each independently and of their own volition have presented him with the same bombshell material. Winer did not, so far as we know, look around for Allen Funt. No, instead he shared the Shearer memo with Steele, who in turn passed it along to the FBI. Do you think anyone bothered to mention to the Bureau, at the time, the peculiar circumstances and provenance of the notes, most notably that they had come from a source as compromised as Cody Shearer? Well, it never occurred to Winer, because he “did not expect them to be shared with anyone in the U.S. government.”
Right. If this is the best defense Winer can make for himself—carefully composed and edited at his leisure—no wonder he’s grumpy about his conduct being investigated.

When Hillary Clinton cites the “intelligence community assessment” to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the presidential election, she’s really repeating her own lie, that her campaign created, rolled through the media and the government, which used it to spy on the Trump campaign, and then finally became an “assessment” under orders from Obama carried out by political allies like Clapper and Brennan.
The media, which once boasted of exposing Watergate, had played a key role in Obama’s Watergate.
The release of a redacted FISA warrant application exposes the fact that the spying on Carter Page, a figure associated with the Trump campaign, relied on no sources other than Democrats and media allies.
In 2016, an arm of the Clinton campaign began assembling a dossier claiming that the Trump campaign was seeking damaging information about it from the Russians. The dossier actually represented an effort by the Clinton campaign to seek damaging information from the Russians about the Trump campaign.
The man tasked with that job, a former British intelligence agent named Christopher Steele, then went on to accuse figures involved with the Trump campaign, of doing the very thing he had been hired to do.
One of those men was Carter Page.

“If governments do their job, the dirty business of illegal immigration can be stopped,” Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini announced Sunday.
In an enthusiastic tweet, Salvini, the 45-year-old leader of the League party, said that the Italian Coast Guard had successfully saved the lives of 40 African migrants over the weekend by rescuing them at sea and taking them back to Libya.
“Willing is being able, I am all in,” Salvini concluded.
Salvini also posted a video on his Facebook page Monday in which he expresses his hope that recent attempts to shuttle migrants across the Strait of Sicily represent the “last gasps” of human traffickers and that this will be “the last summer of tragedies in the Mediterranean.”
Curiously, Mr. Salvini’s parting wish coincides exactly with a special appeal made by Pope Francis on Sunday, in which he, too, expressed his wish that the tragic migrant deaths in the Mediterranean would soon come to an end.
“Dramatic news of shipwrecks of barges laden with migrants in the waters of the Mediterranean have arrived over these last weeks,” the pope said following his weekly Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square. “I express my sorrow in the face of such tragedies and assure my thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.”
Although Salvini and the pope do not see eye to eye on the immigration question, with Salvini pushing for an end to illegal immigration and Francis pressing for a more “welcoming” attitude toward economic migrants, they seem to have connected in a will to bring an end to migrant deaths.
The question remains how best this can be accomplished, but for the moment it would seem that Salvini has the upper hand…”

Khetaram Bheel, a 22-year old Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of Muslim men over an affair with a Muslim woman, near a police station in Barmer district.
The police has reportedly said that the accused individuals tied up the victim’s his hands and legs, and then started beating him. A report by the Hindustan Times quotes the police stating Bheel’s failed attempt to run away while bleeding, and falling dead in that very attempt. The report also claims that his body was found 500 metres away from the spot where he was allegedly beaten up, perhaps transported there by his killers.
It was a known fact in the village, that Bheel worked at the house of the Muslim girl and had a love affair with her. In fact, Khetaram Bheel’s brother, Gordhan Ram said in his police report that there did exist some minor land disputes, with a man named Mahboo Khan.
On the night of 20th July, Saddam Khan and Hayaat Khan had approached Bheel, asking him to help them out with some work in the farm. As Bheel complied, Ram alleged in the report that Amar Khan, Akbar Khan, Anwar Khan, Raheem Khan, Muheeb Khan, Pathai Khan and Shaukat Khan, started beating up Khetaram Bheel.

“Police in Sadiq Khan’s London are seeking a gang of “possibly Turkish” men who broke into a family home and threatened the occupants, including children, with a machete, a rifle, and a “machine gun”.
The break-in took place shortly after midnight on Saturday, June 9th, when three men “burst into” the property in Bermondsey, south London, according to a Metropolitan Police statement.
Police say the home invaders, two described as “of Mediterranean appearance, possibly Turkish” and one as a “light-skinned black male”, were armed with a machete, a rifle, and “what was described as a machine gun”, and threatened to shoot the family of six — “including children and elderly family members” — if they did not hand over money and provide access to a safe.
Britons are not allowed to keep firearms for home defence under the country’s strict gun control laws, so break-ins while residents are at home are far more common than in the United States.
Gun crime is lower than in the U.S. overall but has been rising — jumping 42 percent in the multicultural capital between 2015-16 and 2016-17.
“These three men entered this family’s home armed with an array of weapons, striking terror into the whole family. Two children were present at the time, and they have understandably been left traumatised by this incident,” commented DC Dave Reed, of the Met’s famous Flying Squad.
“We are unaware of a motive and would ask the community for assistance. If you have any information about this incident, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please contact police. You will be treated in the strictest confidence.”
Police say the suspects were all slim and wearing dark clothes and balaclavas, with the two “possibly Turkish” men appearing to be in their 30s, 5’5? and 5’7? tall, and armed with the “large rifle” and machete, respectively.
The “light-skinned black male” was said to have been around 5’9? and armed with the “machine gun”.

The hysterical reactions to Donald Trump’s comments in Helsinki show how we are becoming what David Lean’s T.E. Lawrence called the Arabs: “a little people, a silly people.” The difference is, we are the richest, most powerful, freest people in the history of the world, yet like children we are obsessing over words rather than paying attention to meaningful deeds.
Here from the Washington Post is one sample of the thousands of bipartisan complaints about Trump’s comments in Helsinki: “Trump was just compliant and submissive, nearly fawning over Putin. Without a doubt, Putin is more powerful now than he was before the summit and Trump is weaker.” Notice how the subjective adjectives in sentence one become objective facts in sentence two. In a world where language trumps reality, what you say is what you are, not what you do. This has been the central fallacy of most Trump criticism since he walked down that golden escalator.
Words have consequences, Trump’s critics warn. But they forget to add that words mean something when they are linked to deeds. Here’s an example: “This is my last election . . . After my election I have more flexibility,” especially on “missile defense.” In 2012 Barack Obama was caught asking Dimitri Medvedev to pass this message along to Putin in regard to missile installations planned for Poland and the Czech Republic. True to his word, Obama halted the programs, earning kudos from Medvedev, who called it a “responsible approach,” and Putin, who called it “correct and brave.”

The police quickly intervened to save the victim who lodged a complaint. The anti-Semitic attacker was arrested and placed in police custody and then transferred to the psychiatric infirmary, on the recommendation of the doctor because of his observed state of excitement.
It’s okay. Getting really excited about Jews is a common problem among Muslim settlers in France.

The media loves to fact check, yet it operates almost entirely in a fact-free environment. An environment so fact-free that it is governed entirely by tribal ideology in a darkness into which facts have as little access as light does into a vampire’s coffin.
So Trump’s tweets about the FISA application release have predictably spurred a noxious rash of media fact-checking. Or, as it’s more accurately described, spin.

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya today said it was equally concerned about the “LGBT lifestyle”, and rejected claims by its critics that the Pakatan Harapan-led government was more friendly to the community.

As these liars probably knew, the only real threat of violence was to me and to those students courageous enough to support my appearing on campus. Confirming that now is Daoud, who whined improbably amid the hysteria about my appearance on campus that he had been “questioned about my position at Stanford because of my religion.” Yeah, sure, Hamzeh — everyone knows Stanford is a hotbed of “Islamophobia.”

t least 11 dead bodies have been evacuated following a suicide attack on a local mosque in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno early Monday, local residents said.
Eight others were wounded in the attack at about 5:15 a.m. in Konduga area of Borno, Abubakar Khalid, a survivor said.

OBAMA JUDGE: AL QAEDA MEMBERSHIP NOT INCOMPATIBLE WITH US CITIZENSHIP
Iyman Faris, 49, was sentenced in 2003 for aiding and abetting al-Qaida by scoping out the iconic New York bridge as a part of a plot to cut through the cables supporting the structure. He had met with Osam bin Laden in Afghanistan and worked with 9/11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
Faris is set to be released on Dec. 23, 2020, but a court filing last year in a U.S. District Court argued that Faris lied on immigration papers and that his terrorist affiliations demonstrated a lack of commitment to the Constitution.
Federal Judge Staci Yanle ruled this month in favor of Faris, saying that there was not enough evidence to prove that any misrepresentations influenced the decision to grant him citizenship.
“American citizenship is precious, and the government carries a heavy burden of proof when attempting to divest a naturalized citizen of his or her citizenship,” she wrote on July 11.

The Central District Prosecutor’s Office submitted an indictment against Nidal Salah, a 26-year-old Arab from the Israeli Arab town of Jaljulia.
Salah crossed the Israeli-Syrian border in October 2015 via drone in order to join ISIS. He is being charged with leaving Israel illegally, joining a terror organization, giving information to Israel’s enemies, contact with foreign agents, and other crimes.
Shabak (Israel Security Agency) and Israel Police are investigating.
According to the indictment, during the months July-October 2015 Salah and a few acquaintances living in Jaljulia decided to leave Israel and travel to Syria in order to join ISIS, participate in their activities, and aid the war against the Syrian government.

Eighteen people have been killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram jihadists in the Lake Chad region, a Chadian military source said Sunday.
“Boko Haram elements attacked a village south of Daboua,” not far from Chad’s border with Niger, at around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Thursday, the military source said.
The assailants “cut the throats of 18 people, wounded two others and kidnapped 10 women”.
Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency has devastated the region since it took up arms in 2009 in Nigeria, leaving at least 20,000 people dead, displacing more than two million others and triggering a humanitarian crisis.
Chad, Cameroon and Niger have all joined the military effort by Nigeria to crush Boko Haram.
Chad has seen a recent increase in attacks by the group.
In May, six people were killed, including four government officials and a soldier, in a Boko Haram attack on a Chadian army checkpoint on an island in Lake Chad.

Curiously, Mr. Salvini’s parting wish coincides exactly with a special appeal made by Pope Francis on Sunday, in which he, too, expressed his wish that the tragic migrant deaths in the Mediterranean would soon come to an end.
“Dramatic news of shipwrecks of barges laden with migrants in the waters of the Mediterranean have arrived over these last weeks,” the pope said following his weekly Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square. “I express my sorrow in the face of such tragedies and assure my thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.”
Although Salvini and the pope do not see eye to eye on the immigration question, with Salvini pushing for an end to illegal immigration and Francis pressing for a more “welcoming” attitude toward economic migrants, they seem to have connected in a will to bring an end to migrant deaths.
The question remains how best this can be accomplished, but for the moment it would seem that Salvini has the upper hand.
As Breitbart News has reported, recent immigration data released by both the UNHCR and IOM show a remarkable correlation between curbing immigration and curbing migrant deaths.
Over the first half of 2018, migrant deaths in the Mediterranean have dropped dramatically, at the same time that populist leaders have sent the message that borders are no longer open to economic migrants.
The diminished presence of migrants on the seas has logically meant far fewer deaths.
As of the first week of July, migrant sea deaths in the Mediterranean numbered 1,058, less than half the 2,258 sea deaths registered during the same six-month period of 2017.
Italy’s immigration numbers have undergone a similar sharp decline, thanks in part to its new populist government, and figures for the first half of the year reflect an 80 percent decline over the same period of 2017.
According to data released earlier this month by the United Nations immigration agency (UNHCR), a total of 16,919 migrants arrived by sea into Italy prior to July 8, whereas over the same period in 2017 a total of 85,197 migrants had arrived.
The correlation between immigration figures and migrant deaths at sea becomes still more apparent when prior years are taken into account.
The total number of migrants lost at sea reached its highest point in 2016, with 4,578 migrants believed to be either dead or missing. That year also marked the highest number of migrants arriving across the Mediterranean onto Italian shores, a total of 181,436, UNHCR reported.
In this light, Salvini’s tightened immigration policies would seem to be a much more effective remedy to migrant sea deaths than fanciful calls for open borders and open ports.

Ottawa police are investigating after a man tried to stab a member of the Ceremonial Guard on Parliament Hill Monday.
Department of National Defence official Daniel Le Bouthillier said the incident took place Monday at 10:15 a.m. on the lawn of Parliament Hill, during the Changing of the Guard parade.
The man was armed with a knife and attempted to stab a guard member. “Due to the quick reaction of our soldiers, RCMP and Parliamentary Protective Services, the potential threat was identified and neutralized,” Le Bouthillier said. “No one was injured during this incident.”
The man was arrested.
As the matter is under investigation by the police, any other comments at this point would be inappropriate, Le Bouthillier said.
Ottawa police now have custody of the suspect.

Pelosi, DCCC says petition will block Putin’s visit, misleading donors: report
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was caught pushing misleading claims about blocking a presumed visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the White House in a bid to squeeze donations from gullible donors, The Daily Caller reported.

A Virginia man was sentenced today to 186 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release for multiple crimes related to the prostitution and exploitation of a 15-year-old minor. Dies From FGM Aged 10; Miscarries Aged 11
Two utterly shocking stories are simply not making the top headlines anywhere in the West. In Somalia, a girl died after undergoing FGM aged 10. In Sudan, a wife miscarried aged 11, after her husband, in his forties, beat her.
In Somalia, the 10-year old died (Arabic-language link) after a failed female circumcision (FGM) was performed on her. During the procedure, the FGM practitioner accidentally cut through a vein. The bleeding continued for two days. The family couldn’t stop the bleeding and took the child to a hospital where she died.
A Somali activist said the FGM practitioner was not apprehended and if she would have been, there is no law that would have seen her punished.
While FGM’s routes are in Africa, the United States is not immune by any means.

A mother and her son turned up for a domestic-violence case. Then ICE arrested them.
A Charlotte woman and her 16-year-old son, who are both involved in a domestic-violence dispute, were arrested in the Mecklenburg courthouse by federal immigration agents after they turned up for a hearing, their attorneys said.
The July 9 arrests by U..S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, or ICE, took place outside a fourth-floor courtroom set aside that day for domestic violence cases. The incident is expected to intensify a debate over where ICE enforcement occurs and who the agency targets.

Officials: Alamo monument must relocate for $450M plan
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio officials insist a historic monument must be relocated as part of the $450 million plan to redevelop the Alamo.
City Councilman Roberto Trevino told the newspaper that the 1930s Cenotaph doesn’t fit on-site and obscures views. He says the city isn’t considering leaving the 60-foot (18-meter) in its current location.
The monument honors Alamo defenders killed in the 1836 battle.
Relocating the structure has been the most vocally opposed issue in the plan proposed in 2014 by the city, the Texas General Land Office and nonprofit Alamo Endowment. Residents have also voiced concerns about demolishing buildings and closing streets.
Trevino says a new draft plan with renderings will show why moving the monument will provide a better visitor experience. The illustrations will be shown publicly next month.

Mom arrested after 2-year-old daughter tests positive for STD and meth
A Missouri woman was charged Tuesday with child abuse and endangerment after police say she admitted in an audio recording to seeing her 2-year-old girl raped repeatedly.
Police say Azzie Watson, 25, of Independence, Missouri, was recorded by her boyfriend saying she watched two men rape her daughter. She later recanted that statement, saying she lied at the time because she was physically intimidated.
Her 2-year-old girl tested positive for chlamydia and had meth in her system, according to court documents.
Watson told police officers the only man she brings her daughter around is her boyfriend, Charles Green, who has also been charged with multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
No rape charges have yet been filed said Michael Mansur, director of communication for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, in an emailed statement on Thursday. An investigation into other charges or defendants is ongoing, he said.

I was talking to a Russian a few years ago regarding the corruption in Moscow, and their comment was, “All politicians want to do is get the power, then they can just steal anything they want. Money is the reason behind all the problems in our country.”
I had forgotten about that comment until earlier this week when I had to drive through one of the s–thole cities along the Connecticut coast.
When you see the urban devastation inflicted by the Democratic Party on this once great state, there is no other conclusion except that corruption is the reason for the decay.
There is not a lack of money in Democrat-controlled cities; there is a lack of responsibility, and simply a problem of theft. Destroyed roads, rusted buildings, homeless, lack of economic opportunity … these are the things that are brought with ‘progressive’ policies, along with the highest taxes in the country.
Where does all that money go? It sure doesn’t go into infrastructure. It goes into the pockets of politicians and their supporters.
It reminds me of Obama’s ‘stimulus’ package after his election. He spent almost a trillion dollars, but the ‘shovel-ready projects weren’t as shovel ready as he thought!’

David Hogg: Trump will cancel 2020 election
Gun-control activist David Hogg apparently thinks President Trump will cancel the 2020 election.
In a tweet Sunday afternoon, Mr. Hogg, who had earlier in the day insinuated that all the National Rifle Association’s 2016 political spending money came from Russia, encouraged people to vote with a stark warning.
Mr. Hogg did not elaborate on why he thought that, though a Washington Post poll that came out last week showed that a majority of Republicans answered yes to the question “If Donald Trump were to say that the 2020 presidential election should be postponed until the country can make sure that only eligible American citizens can vote, would you support or oppose postponing the election?”
There is no evidence that Mr. Trump has such a plan or that he would have the power to cancel the election even if he did.

Defence minister Harjit Sajjan tweeted he had been briefed about the attempted stabbing on the Hill.

The daily Changing the Guard Ceremony on Parliament Hill is a popular tourist attraction. It began on Sunday, June 24 and is scheduled to end on Aug. 23.
In addition to the daily Guard Mount ceremonies on Parliament Hill, the Ceremonial Guard performs hourly sentry duties every day at Rideau Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Canadian Forces said.
Pierre Poirier, the City of Ottawa’s head of security and emergency management, said municipal security measures didn’t change after the arrest.
“The City of Ottawa has not put any specific enhanced security measures in place as a result of the events that took place earlier today on Parliament Hill,” Poirier said. “Corporate security consults with the Ottawa Police Service on incidents of this nature to assess any potential impact to residents, visitors and staff.”
RCMP provide security for the guard ceremony.
The incident appears to be isolated and the Canadian Forces is not increasing security at its Ottawa area locations.
On an overcast Monday afternoon, a small crowd of tourists and other Parliament Hill-goers milled around the lawn, a few feet away from the scene of the attempted stabbing just hours earlier.
“I’m actually shocked to hear that,” said Glen Telford of Smiths Falls, who was walking by the Centennial Flame with visiting friends. “I feel very confident in my country, very confident coming on the Hill, bringing my guests here. I’m very proud to be Canadian and nothing will stop me from coming here. That’s what freedom’s all about I guess.”
Military personnel have been the targets of attacks in Ontario over the last several years.
In March 2016, a man with schizophrenia attacked soldiers at a military recruiting centre in Toronto. Ayanle Hassan Ali was originally charged with terrorism-related offences. But he was acquitted of those and found not criminally responsible for other offences due to mental illness.
Ali was armed with a knife and two soldiers received minor injuries before he was overpowered and subdued by military personnel.
In October 2014, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed in Quebec when Martin Rouleau deliberately ran the Canadian soldier down. Another soldier was injured. Rouleau was killed by police after a high-speed chase, but the RCMP suspect he had become radicalized after converting to Islam.
Days later, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, a soldier standing guard at the war memorial in Ottawa, and then attacked Parliament Hill. Zehaf-Bibeau, a drug addict who had embraced radical Islam, was killed during that attack.

Someone Attempted to Stab a Soldier on Parliament Hill
One person has been arrested in the attack, which comes nearly four years after another soldier was killed on the hill.
VICE has learned of an attempted stabbing this morning of a Ceremonial Guard on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Parliamentary Protective Services arrested the individual and Ottawa Police is now investigating. No injuries were reported.
The attack occurred only hours after a gunman killed two civilians and shot 13 in Toronto, Sunday night. Both incidents remain under investigation.
In October 2014, a lone shooter ambushed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, killing him and then storming the House of Commons before being shot and killed by Parliamentary security.

The Illinois State Board of Elections said Wilson didn’t break any campaign finance laws because the money came from his non-profit foundation.

Police are continuing to investigate after a suspicious discovery was made in Mississauga.
Around 6:55 p.m. on Sunday (July 22), items described as military ordnance were located in Garcia Park, in the area of Whitehorn Avenue and Britannia Road West.
The items were determined to be two grenades manufactured sometime between 1917 and 1980, police report.
Until further analysis, it is currently unknown whether the grenades are live or inert.
Officers have thoroughly searched the area and no other items were found.
Police are seeking witnesses or anyone who may have video footage regarding these discarded items to contact them at 905-453-2121, ext. 1133.

Dem Congressman Accused of Covering up Sexual Harassment
Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan (Minn.) faces accusations that he helped cover up sexual harassment allegations against a former legislative director, Jim Swiderski.
MinnPost spoke to eight former employees in Nolan’s office; three had specific harassment allegations against Swiderski, including repeated groping. The other five former employees provided corroborating details.
Nolan allowed Swiderski to resign in the summer of 2015 and tell colleagues he was looking for new opportunities rather than make him face formal disciplinary consequences.
Months later, Swiderski was hired to work on Nolan’s re-election campaign.
The staffers contacted by MinnPost remain “disturbed” over how Nolan handled the situation, but Nolan’s chief of staff Jodie Torkelson claimed responsibility for all personnel decisions in the congressman’s federal office.
Nolan said that in hindsight he shouldn’t have rehired Swiderski.
A cellphone for Swiderski was not accepting messages Thursday, a Minnesota ABC affiliate reported.
