“After agreeing on military cooperation in 2017 when 25 bloc members signed a defense pact, a smaller circle of EU members are going to take formal steps to create the European Intervention Initiative. This force is designed for responding to natural disasters, crisis intervention or the evacuation of Europeans.
France’s Defense Minister Florence Parly has told the French newspaper Figaro that her country, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Estonia, Spain and Portugal are to sign a letter of intent for the creation of a joint military intervention force on June 25.
According to a source close to a French top official, cited by the AFP, the goal of the initiative is “joint planning work on crisis scenarios that could potentially threaten European security.”
While some EU tactical interventional groups exist in principle, so far they have never been used.
Since the proposed force, known as the European Intervention Initiative, would stay separate from other EU defense cooperation programs, Britain, which has always resisted the idea of an “EU army,” will be able to take part even after it has left the bloc.
“This is clearly an initiative that allows for the association of some non-EU states. The UK has been very keen because it wants to maintain cooperation with Europe beyond bilateral ties,” the French top military official told the newspaper.
According to Parly, Italy, which presently remains outside the Intervention Force group, was “also considering the possibility of joining.”
Path to European Army
The initiative to set up a European military intervention force, which could be rapidly deployed in the event of a crisis, were introduced by France’s President Emmanuel Macron in September 2017.
In June 2017, the bloc brought a 70-year-old European Defense Community ambition to life, as the European Commission decided to launch the 5 billion euro European Defense Fund, designed to supplement member states’ defense research and support EU countries in obtaining military equipment.
At the end of 2017, 25 of the bloc’s member states signed a joint declaration calling upon the European Council to adopt a decision establishing a Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) on defense. This would allow Europe both to increase the volume of investments on military technology and step up the level of coordination in this area within Europe. The commitments, confirmed by all the states except Britain, Denmark and Malta, include a “successive medium-term increase in defense investment expenditures to 20 percent of total defense spending in order to fill strategic capability gaps,” and “increasing the share of expenditure allocated to defense research and technology with a view to nearing the 2 percent of total defense spending.”
However, such initiatives encountered criticism from the UK as the country has repeatedly warned that common defense forces could undermine NATO.”

The future of children born to Denmark’s “foreign fighters,” that is, jihadists who left the Scandinavian country to fight for the Islamists’ cause in the Middle East, has become a hot topic for debate. Danish journalist and author Deniz Serinci, the author of two books on Daesh, stressed that the children have been indoctrinated.
“Daesh took boys aged from 6 to 16, regardless of whether they had come to the ‘caliphate’ of their own accord or not, and sent them to military training where the children became indoctrinated to become jihadists,” Serinci said, venturing that rehabilitating these children may be even more challenging than helping repenting jihadists.
Conservative foreign and human rights rapporteur Naser Khader is not in favor of Denmark becoming proactive in “reclaiming” the “Daesh kids,” warning of safety risks associated with this process.
“We are going to face a dilemma, with some of the children likely being as brainwashed as their parents. Hereby, we’re going to import a security threat,” Naser Khader pointed out.
The Danish People’s Party foreign rapporteur Søren Espersen agreed that these children posed an imminent threat.
“It is a widely accepted idea that people who are Islamists also brainwash their children. There are reports of Quranic schools that ingrain a life the Islamists themselves lead, a caliphate type of life,” Espersen argued.
With Daesh almost quelled in both Syria and Iraq, children born to roughly 5,000 European jihadists and abandoned on former battlefields, remain a problem for governments across Europe. A UN-approved report called “Children of Islamic State” concluded that Daesh indoctrinated a whole generation of children with their extremist ideology from birth. Quilliam, the think tank behind the report, even drew parallels with pro-Nazi countries during World War II.
In the past years, Denmark contributed 150 jihadists to Daesh and other terrorist groups in the Middle East. Nine of them have been sentenced to prison in absentia.”

“Algeria has denied mistreating migrants amid claims it has abandoned more than 13,000 in the Sahara Desert over the past 14 months – including pregnant women and children.
The country has been accused of expelling the migrants without food or water and forcing them to walk, sometimes at gunpoint, under a blistering sun before being left to die.
Pictures show migrants coming over the horizon by the hundreds under temperatures of up to 48C. Officials from the International Organisation for Migration have warned of a looming ‘catastrophe’.
In Niger, where the majority head, the lucky ones limp across a desolate 10-mile no-man’s-land to the border village of Assamaka, the Associated Press said.
Others are reported to have wandered for days before a UN rescue squad can find them.
Untold numbers die, with nearly all of the more than two dozen survivors interviewed by The Associated Press telling of people in their groups who simply vanished in the Sahara.
‘Women were lying dead, men… Other people got missing in the desert because they didn’t know the way,’ said Janet Kamara, who was pregnant at the time. ‘Everybody was just on their own.’
She recalled at least two nights in the open before her group was rescued, but said she lost track of time.
‘I lost my son, my child,’ said Ms Kamara, who is Liberian.
Another woman in her early twenties also went into labour and lost her baby, she said.
Algeria’s mass expulsions have picked up since October 2017, as the European Union renewed pressure on North African countries to head off migrants going north to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea or the barrier fences with Spain.
A European Union spokesman said the EU was aware of what Algeria was doing, but that ‘sovereign countries’ can expel migrants as long as they comply with international law.
Unlike Niger, Algeria takes none of the EU money intended to help with the migration crisis, although it did receive 111.3 million US dollars in aid from Europe between 2014 and 2017.
Algeria provides no figures for its involuntary expulsions, but the number of people crossing on foot to Niger has been increasing since the International Organisation for Migration started counting in May 2017 to as high as 2,888 in April 2018.
In all, according to the IOM, a total of 11,276 men, women and children survived the march.
At least another 2,500 were forced on a similar trek into neighbouring Mali, with an unknown number succumbing along the way.
The migrants AP talked to described being rounded up hundreds at a time, crammed into trucks for hours to what is known as Point Zero, then dropped in the desert and pointed towards Niger.
‘There were people who couldn’t take it. They sat down and we left them. They were suffering too much,’ said Aliou Kande, an 18-year-old from Senegal.
Mr Kande said nearly a dozen people gave up, collapsing in the sand. His group of 1,000 wandered from 8am until 7pm, he said. He never saw the missing people again.
‘They tossed us into the desert, without our telephones, without money,’ he said.
The migrants’ accounts are confirmed by videos collected by AP over months, which show hundreds of people stumbling away from lines of trucks and buses, spreading wider and wider through the desert.
Liberian Ju Dennis filmed his deportation with a phone he kept hidden. It shows people crammed on the floor of an open truck, trying to shade their bodies from the sun.
‘You’re facing deportation in Algeria — there is no mercy,’ he said. ‘I want to expose them now… We are here, and we saw what they did. And we got proof.’
Algerian authorities refused to comment. But Algeria has in the past denied criticism that it is committing rights abuses by abandoning migrants in the desert, calling the allegations a ‘malicious campaign’ intended to inflame neighbouring countries.
The Sahara is a swift killer that leaves little evidence behind. The International Organisation for Migration has estimated that for every migrant known to have died crossing the Mediterranean, as many as two are lost in the desert – potentially upwards of 30,000 people since 2014.
The vast flow of migrants puts an enormous strain on all the points along the route.
‘They come by the thousands. This time, the expulsions that I’m seeing, I’ve never seen anything like it,’ said Alhoussan Adouwal, an IOM official who has taken up residence in Assamaka to send out the alert when a new group arrives.
He then tries to arrange rescue for those still in the desert.
‘It’s a catastrophe,’ he said.
Most choose to leave by IOM bus for the town of Arlit, about six hours to the south through soft sand. And then on to Agadez, the Nigerien city that has been a crossroads for African trade and migration for generations.
Ultimately, they will return to their home countries on IOM-sponsored flights.
Even as these migrants move south, they cross paths with some who are making the trip north towards Algeria and Europe.”

Matteo Salvini, whose far right League party has campaigned to bar migrants fleeing Africa and expel those already in Italy, and has been in a governing coalition since the start of June, did not say in which countries such centres could be located.
Libya has been the main departure point for migrants trying to reach Europe by sea since routes from Turkey were largely shut following a deal with the European Union in 2016.
Almost all arrive in Italy though crossings have fallen sharply last July as smuggling networks were disrupted under heavy Italian pressure and Libya’s EU-trained coastguard stepped up interceptions.
“Reception and identification centres should be set up (in or to) the south of Libya,” Salvini told reporters after meeting Libyan Interior Minister Abdulsalam Ashour and deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeg in the capital Tripoli.
Salvini said such centres would ease pressure on both Libya and Italy. He gave no details, but appears to envisage the centres as a way to process asylum requests outside the EU in order that those deemed not eligible can be quickly sent back to their home countries…”

At first glance, it’s an amusing but not unusual Italian beach scene.
The video shows a group of cheerful tourists dancing in the shallow waters of the Mediterranean during an aquatic Zumba class, waving their arms to peppy music.
Look closely, however, and the image takes on a larger meaning. On the horizon in the background is a cargo ship. And this particular cargo ship happens to be stranded at sea with 113 migrants aboard after picking them up off the coast of Libya last Friday morning.
Roberto Brumat, a journalist for Italian daily Corriere della Sera, shot the video Sunday morning while on holiday in Pozzallo, Sicily.
He posted it to his blog, noting the juxtaposition — frolicking tourists, desperate migrants — while explaining he didn’t intend it as a criticism of the Zumba dancers on the beach, who were likely unaware of the plight of the ship behind them.
The container ship, operated by Danish transportation company Maersk, remains in limbo in the Mediterranean after being refused permission to dock in Italy.
“I was strolling on the beach of Santa Maria del Focallo, near Pozzallo, and I knew that the Danish ship was (and still is) on the backdrop,” Brumat told CNN.”I took the video to show the juxtaposition between two worlds. I thought it was a highly symbolic scene.”
The Maersk sits roughly three nautical miles from the port of Pozzallo, Italian Coast Guard spokesman Commander Cosimo Nicastro told CNN.
He added that of the 113 migrants aboard, five have since been brought to shore for medical reasons, including an eight-month pregnant woman and her partner, and a young girl who needed medical assistance with her mother and sister.[…]

“We need to rethink everything: language, ideas, people, organisation. We need to widen our scope and involve everyone in a new manifesto,” he pleaded.
One of Salvini’s first moves as interior minister was to refuse the Aquarius ‘rescue’ ship permission to disgorge over 600 migrants it had collected from a few miles off the shore of Libya.
He suggested they should be taken by Malta, which also refused them, before Spain’s new socialist government invited them to land in Valencia, some 1,000 miles away.
The mainstream media was highly critical of Italy’s decision, but many members of the public questioned why the ‘rescue’ ship did not allow the Libyan coast guard to collect the migrants and did not consider taking them to any of a number of safe ports in Tunisia and Algeria – far closer to the collection point than Italy and Spain.
Salvini has stuck to its guns on the issue despite the pressure from the European Union and French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the media — and polls show a massive 80 percent of the Italian public back his stance.

(Bloomberg) — Traders in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar shut their stores to protest rising prices and the weakening of Iran’s currency, official news agencies reported, as Iranian officials took action to allay concerns that an economic crisis was looming.
Retailers and gold sellers kept away from the bazaar to gather at main meeting places, according to the semi-official Fars News agency. They said they were afraid they’d lose money if they kept their shops open, according to Fars. Turkey’s Erdogan claims election victory, opposition wary
NKARA, June 25 (Reuters) – Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AK Party claimed victory in Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary polls on Sunday, overcoming the biggest electoral challenge to their rule in a decade and a half.
The main opposition party did not immediately concede defeat. But after initially saying Erdogan would fall well short of a first-round victory, it said it would continue its democratic struggle “whatever the result”.
“Our people have given us the job of carrying out the presidential and executive posts,” Erdogan said in a short national address as votes were still being counted.
“I hope nobody will try to cast a shadow on the results and harm democracy in order to hide their own failure,” he added, clearly aiming to pre-empt opposition complaints of foul play.
Erdogan, 64, the most popular but also the most divisive politician in modern Turkish history, later waved to cheering, flag-waving supporters from the top of a bus in Istanbul.
Sunday’s vote ushers in a powerful new executive presidency long sought by Erdogan and backed by a small majority of Turks in a 2017 referendum. Critics say it will further erode democracy in the NATO member state and entrench one-man rule.
Erdogan’s victory paves the way for another five-year term. Under the new constitution, he could serve a further term from 2023, taking him to 2028.
An unexpectedly strong showing by the AK Party’s alliance partner, the nationalist MHP, could translate into the stable parliamentary majority that Erdogan seeks in order to govern freely.
“This sets the stage for speeding up reforms,” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek tweeted of the results.
The lira, which has lost about a fifth of its value against the dollar this year, firmed more than 1 percent in early trading in Asia on hopes of a stable working relationship between the president and parliament. It reached 4.587 lira to the dollar at 12:17 a.m. (2117 GMT) before easing slightly.
OPPOSITION DOUBTS
Erdogan’s main presidential rival, Muharrem Ince of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), urged election monitors to remain at polling stations to help ensure against possible election fraud, as final results came in from large cities where his party typically performs strongly.
With 99 percent of votes counted in the presidential race, Erdogan had 52.5 percent, well ahead of Ince’s 31 percent, broadcasters said.
The opposition raised doubts about the accuracy and reliability of the figures released by state-run Anadolu news agency, the sole distributor of the official vote tally.
But an opposition platform collating its own vote tally from monitors based at polling stations around the country broadly confirmed the Anadolu figures.
Opposition parties and NGOs had deployed up to half a million monitors at ballot boxes to try to prevent possible electoral fraud. They said election law changes and fraud allegations in the 2017 referendum raised fears about the fairness of Sunday’s elections.

Lives at steak: French butchers warn about vegan violence
Paris (AFP) – Butchers in France have written to the interior minister to ask for protection against violence and intimidation from vegan campaigners who “want to impose their lifestyle on the immense majority of people”.
The letter from the head of the CFBCT butchers’ confederation, which represents 18,000 businesses across the country, was sent to Interior Minister Gerard Collomb last week and seen by AFP on Monday.
“We count on your services and on the support of the entire government so that the physical, verbal and moral violence stops as soon as possible,” CFBCT head Jean-François Guihard wrote in the letter.
Several butcher shops were vandalised and sprayed with fake blood in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France in April, while the CFBCT said there were also precedents in the southern Occitanie region.

North Korea says to ignore Japan until it scraps military drills, other measures
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea will continue to ignore Japan unless Tokyo halts hostilities against its neighbor, such as large-scale military drills and efforts to boost military readiness, the isolated nation’s state media said on Monday.
Japan has been eyeing prospects for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, at which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hopes to tackle the issue of Japanese citizens abducted decades ago by the North.
Despite Kim’s summits with the leaders of China, South Korea and the United States in a flurry of diplomatic activity over the past year, no date has been set for one with Japan.
“If Japan does not correct its ambitions regarding peace and security, it should realize the end result where Japan is passed over will be inevitable,” North Korea’s state news agency said.
“Japan should stop its large-scale military drills and the boosting of its military capacity aimed at attacking (Korea), scrap its hostile policy against us, break with the past and show its sincerity towards peace,” it said in a commentary.
In 2002, North Korea admitted that it kidnapped 13 Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s, and five returned home.

GAZA – UNRWA employees protest against US funding cut in Gaza
Employees at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) rallied outside its headquarters in Gaza City on Monday, to protest against recent US funding cuts.
The protesters exhibited numerous palestinian flags, and placards such as “Dignity is priceless.”
“We tell the donor countries to be honest in their commitments and to compensate the American shortage and we ask the General Secretary to stay on his decision and the UNRWA to take decision from the General Assembly of the UN and to find other donors to take over this shortage,” said Ameer al-Meshal, head of the UNRWA employees staff union in the Gaza Strip.
In January, the administration of US President Donald Trump said it would withhold $65 million of a planned $125 million funding installment to UNRWA, calling on other nations to contribute more.

Did the FBI Frame Flynn?
The criminal case against Gen. Michael Flynn for lying to FBI agents was incredibly weak. At the time, I assumed that the charges against him were based on an audio tape or court reporter’s transcript of his interview. I wrote that the transcript should be made public so that we can all judge whether anything he said was actually untrue. While Flynn ultimately pled guilty to a single count of lying to a federal investigator, he has also said publicly that he pled to that single charge because the criminal investigation was rapidly bankrupting him.
In fact, there is no verbatim record of what Flynn said to the agents who interviewed him. Consistent with normal FBI practice, as I understand it, there is no recording or transcript. Rather, the agents who conducted the interrogation summarized what Flynn said in a form FD-302. Is this summary of what Flynn (or any other witness) said accurate? Who knows? Are nuances lost? Undoubtedly. Is much of what the witness said, that may have mitigated the claim that something he said was false, omitted? Of course.
In my opinion, the likelihood of getting a criminal conviction of General Flynn on the basis of a Form 302 was vanishingly small. If the government can’t prove what Flynn said–exactly–there is no way they can convict him of what amounts to perjury. So I find Flynn’s statement that he didn’t do anything wrong, but pled guilty to a single count to preserve what little net worth he has left, to be credible.

“Why the hell are we standing down?”
That was the question that the White House’s cybersecurity coordinator was asked after Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser, issued a stand down order on Russia.
Testimony at the Senate Intelligence Committee hearings on Russian interference in the election once again raised the central paradox of the Russia conspiracy theory. If Russian interference in the election represented the crisis that we are told it did, why did Obama fail to take any meaningful action?
The White House’s own cybersecurity people wanted an aggressive response before being told to stand down. Obama issued a bloodless warning to Russia while his people deliberately crippled our offense.
Democrats and the media blamed the Russian hacking on Trump. But it was Susan Rice who had told the cybersecurity team to “knock it off” and Obama’s people who hadn’t wanted him to be “boxed in” and forced to respond to Russian actions. Was this just the usual appeasement or was there more to it?
Why didn’t Obama and his team want to stop Russian hacking? Because they needed the Russians.

Immigrants put into garbage containters the towels and blankets donated by the Red Cross to the immigrants of Aquarius.
In recent hours, many users on the Facebook have reported that Aquarius immigrants have thrown the blankets and towels donated by Crus Roja to the garbage containers located at the educational complex of Cheste. Many of the migrants were sent to the complex until their situation will be regulated, although many of them fled after the first night. Some of the migrants were even able to pay for the drinks they ordered at a nearby restaurant with 100 euro bills.
Even the youngest who moved to a residence in Alicante, escaped the first night to party, despite the ‘progress’ [media]insisted that they were in shock and traumatized by the harsh condition on the Aquarius.
As seen in the photos, the containers, belonging to the Educational Complex of Cheste, located next to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, are full of clothes, blankets and towels that are usually donated by Red Cross in these situations. You can even see the exact bags in which they were contained.
What we can not confirm is, if the bags were filled with the clothes donated by Red Cross and the Ministry of Employment, or simply, with the clothes that the immigrants carried before receiving the donated clothes.
Despite this, there are many citizens who have been outraged by the fact that they throw away the towels and blankets that the Red Cross donates to immigrants once they arrive in our country in the condition that the illegal immigrants of the Aquarius supposedly were
