ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey said on Friday that a French pledge to help stabilize a region of northern Syria controlled by Kurdish-dominated forces amounted to support for terrorism and could make France a “target of Turkey”.
French backing for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, has angered Ankara at a time when it is fighting the YPG in northern Syria and considers it a terrorist organization.
President Tayyip Erdogan said France had taken a “completely wrong approach” on Syria, adding that he exchanged heated words with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, last week.
The split with France is the latest rift between Turkey under Erdogan and its NATO allies in the West.
Turkey has long complained about U.S. support for the SDF, among a number of irritants to ties with the leading NATO power. Last year it compared the German and Dutch authorities to Nazis for restricting pro-Erdogan demonstrations during a campaign for a referendum to give him greater powers.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said the French stance was setting Paris on a collision course with Ankara.
“Those who enter into cooperation and solidarity with terror groups against Turkey…will, like the terrorists, become a target of Turkey,” Bozdag, who is also the Turkish government spokesman, wrote on Twitter. “We hope France does not take such an irrational step.”
Macron met an SDF delegation on Thursday and gave assurances of French support to stabilize northern Syria. A presidential source later said France could increase its military contribution to the U.S.-led coalition which – alongside the SDF – is fighting Islamic State in Syria.
The United States has 2,000 troops in SDF-held territory, and France also has some troops there as part of the coalition.
Ankara considers the YPG fighters in the SDF to be an extension of Kurdish militants who have waged a decades-old insurgency in southeast Turkey.
Turkish forces drove the YPG from the northwestern Syrian town of Afrin nearly two weeks ago and Erdogan says Ankara is preparing to extend operations along hundreds of miles of border, including areas where the American forces are deployed.
The Afrin operation has already drawn international criticism, notably from Macron. Ankara, meanwhile, has said it expects its allies to move their troops out of the way of a Turkish advance.
“We have no intention to harm soldiers of allied nations, but we cannot allow terrorists to roam freely (in northern Syria),” Erdogan said.
One U.S. service member and one other member of the U.S.-led coalition were killed by a bomb in Syria overnight, the first to die in an attack this year.
TRUMP SURPRISE
President Donald Trump added fresh uncertainty on Thursday when he said that the United States would be “coming out of Syria” very soon – comments which appeared to take his own administration by surprise.
U.S. officials have said in recent months that Washington planned to keep an open-ended presence in northern Syria, to support stability in the SDF-controlled region, prevent any Islamic State resurgence and counter Iranian influence.
SDF spokesman Kino Gabriel said the force had not been informed of any U.S. withdrawal plan.
“Our work and coordination (with the coalition) is continuing,” Gabriel told Reuters in a written message.
Asked whether U.S. forces had been informed of a decision to withdraw or were preparing to do so, a spokesman for the coalition said he would not comment on future operations.
A PYD member in Paris said Macron had promised at Thursday’s meeting with the SDF to send more troops to northern Syria, provide humanitarian assistance and push a diplomatic solution.
The French presidency did not confirm that Macron had pledged more troops, but the presidential source said France could bolster its military intervention in Syria “within the existing framework” of the U.S.-led coalition.
The presidency also said Macron was offering to mediate between Turkey and the SDF – a suggestion Erdogan dismissed.
“Do not engage in things beyond you, we do not need a mediator,” he said, responding to the French offer in remarks to members of his ruling AK Party in Ankara. “Who are you to speak of mediation between Turkey and a terrorist organization?”
Accusing Paris of appeasing terrorism, he said Macron would be held accountable for his policy by his own people.
“We hope France doesn’t come to us for help when the terrorists running from Syria and Iraq fill their country after being encouraged by their policy,” he said.
Erdogan spoke last week with Macron about the French president’s criticism of Turkey’s Afrin campaign.
“He was saying weird things and so, even if it was a bit high-octane, I had to tell him some things,” Erdogan said. “It is not anyone’s place to portray our armed forces as something we do not find acceptable.”

There’s been some good (and bad) writing in the last week about Donald Trump’s choice of Ambassador John Bolton to succeed General H.R. McMaster as National Security Adviser.
There has also been superb writing (see Omri Ceren, for example) about the specific problem of the Iran nuclear program and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the peculiar non-agreement perpetrated in July 2015 but never signed by Iran, never agreed to by Iran in the same language as understood by the other parties, and clearly never seen as binding by Iran, which has continued to violate the terms of the JCPOA and UN resolution 2231, by which it was, to some degree, “implemented.”
Bolton’s appointment is considered by many to be a sign that the Trump administration is indeed serious about Trump’s ultimatum to our European partners in the JCPOA; that is, “fix it,” with a deadline of 12 May for serious proposals, or we pull out.
Some observers see Bolton’s reputation as the kind of bolstering factor that will make Trump’s threat even more credible. This logic would apply to the potential for nuclear negotiations with North Korea as well.

Two men who were arrested earlier this month for transporting more than 70 pounds of methamphetamine through Oregon are Mexican nationals living in the U.S. illegally, The Daily Caller News Foundation learned.
Israel Mercado Mendoza of Creswell, Ore., and Rigoberto Morfin Pedroza of Los Angeles were arrested March 17 following a traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Douglas County, Ore. During the stop, a police dog signaled the presence of drugs in the car. A subsequent search led to the discovery of 74 pounds of meth, the largest seizure in county history, according to the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team.
Mercado Mendoza and Morfin Pedroza are illegal immigrants, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. They were taken into custody and detained at the Douglas County Jail, where federal authorities placed immigration detention requests for both men.
“On March 19, ICE lodged detainers on Israel Salvador Mercado-Mendoza and Rigoberto Morfin-Pedroza, both citizens of Mexico illegally in the U.S., with the Douglas County Jail after their arrests on local felony charges,” an ICE spokeswoman told David Olen Cross, an independent crime researcher based in Salem, Ore.
Cross obtained the men’s immigration status as a part of his research into Oregon illegal aliens’ criminal activity, he told TheDCNF. On behalf of Republican state Sen. Kim Thatcher, Cross creates monthly reports using data from ICE and the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC). His reports are aimed at documenting the cost of incarcerating foreign nationals in the Oregon prison system, where one in 15 inmates is a criminal alien.

It all started with a discussion between Felix and two female classmates. When he said migrants are overrepresented as perpetrators of sex crimes the women did not believe him and wanted to see sources of his claim.
The next day Felix came with official statistics of Sweden’s National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå) and a well verified study that showed that 95 per cent of assault rapes are committed by men with foreign backgrounds.
After he had given the fact sheet to the women the following day, it was spread in his class during a lecture. In the middle of the lecture, an African woman in the back of the hall suddenly stood up and pointed to Felix, who sat at the front.

NORTH FORK – A threat made on social media this morning had parents and students at the North Fork School in fear of returning to their classrooms after spring break.
This morning, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a student from North Fork Elementary School used social media to post a threat of a school shooting.
One parent provided this screenshot of the posting online that read: “On Tuesday, April 3rd at North Fork elementary at 9:30 a.m. I’m gonna shoot up the school. I’m tired if [sic] bullies and assholes so if u don’t want to die don’t come to school.”
The female student was identified and arrested for criminal threats. The Sheriff’s Office says their investigation determined that the girl did not have access to any guns or other weapons.

PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic extradited a Russian man to the U.S. to face charges of hacking computers at LinkedIn, Dropbox and other American companies, an official said Friday.
Yevgeniy Nikulin was flown to the U.S. overnight, Justice Ministry spokeswoman Tereza Schejbalova said.
Nikulin denies he’s a hacker. His defense attorney claimed his case is politically motivated in the U.S.
The decision by Justice Minister Robert Pelikan was announced just minutes after the country’s Constitutional Court released a statement that it rejected a last-minute appeal from the Nikulin as “groundless.”
No further details were immediately available about the decision in a case that pitted the U.S. against Russia.
The Czechs arrested Nikulin in Prague in cooperation with the FBI in October 2016. He is accused by U.S. prosecutors of penetrating computers at Silicon Valley firms in 2012 and they want him extradited to face trial.

The three clients of a local lawyer who accused him of coercing them into having sex with him told investigators that they often provided sex voluntarily — occasionally in an empty jury room at the Bexar County Courthouse — in exchange for his money or his legal services.
According to an affidavit backing an arrest warrant for the lawyer, Mark H. Benavides, 46, some of the witnesses identified him by the “scales of justice” tattoo on his back.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coffee sellers in California should have to post warnings because the brew may contain an ingredient that’s been linked to cancer, a judge has ruled.
The culprit is a chemical produced in the bean roasting process that is a known carcinogen and has been at the heart of an eight-year legal struggle between a tiny nonprofit group and Big Coffee.
The Council for Education and Research on Toxics wanted the coffee industry to remove acrylamide from its processing — like potato chip makers did when it sued them years ago — or disclose the danger in ominous warning signs or labels. The industry, led by Starbucks Corp., said the level of the chemical in coffee isn’t harmful and any risks are outweighed by benefits.

A 50-year-old Christian has become the 19th homicide victim in Sadiq Khan’s London this month.
David Potter was found stabbed to death in his flat above an Asian off-licence in Tooting by police on Monday afternoon, the Evening Standard reports.
Thought to be the eleventh homicide victim in the British capital in a fortnight, Mr. Potter is said to have been a regular churchgoer, and often took in homeless people to stay with him after having spent some time as a rough sleeper himelf in 2003.
“He was a good man. There was never a problem,” commented a worker at the off-licence he lived above.

Toronto police have arrested and charged a third suspect in the shooting death of a man in the city’s west end earlier this month.
Abdirahman Islow, 27, of no fixed address has been charged first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Nnamdi Ogba.
Ogba was shot to death while walking to his car in a Toronto Community Housing complex after visiting friends on March 16.
Police spokeswoman Katrina Arrogante says Islow, who was arrested Thursday night, is the alleged driver of a getaway car used in the shooting.

First, the city of Los Alamitos voted to denounce California’s sanctuary law when it voted in mid-March to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and hand criminal aliens apprehended by the city over for removal. Citing his pledge to uphold the Constitution of the United States as well as protect the welfare of the citizens of his small Orange County, California, community, Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar explained that his city is in complete disbelief over what has transpired in Sacramento over their passage of the statewide sanctuary law. “I think we should 100 percent be coordinating and helping out federal agents,” he said.
Second, Dave Herrington, the mayor of Aliso Viejo, joined the chorus in publicly challenging the heresy coming out of Sacramento, which Herrington calls “unconstitutional.” “Sanctuary laws make us less safe,” said Herrington, a former Orange County Sheriff.
In another show of support against dangerous sanctuary policies, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens recently made the release dates of jail inmates – including illegal aliens – publicly available online. The Sheriff’s Department, which was forced to release 172 inmates back into the county in the last three months because of the state’s shortsighted sanctuary policies, is now taking steps to become part of the solution. Don Barnes, Orange County undersheriff, told the Los Angeles Times that ICE is now out looking for the released illegal aliens, and “it would be easier for everyone involved and safer for the community and law enforcement if they were relinquished to the custody of ICE rather than returned to the community.”

Attorney Gloria Allred has dropped client Summer Zervos, one of the women accusing President Trump of sexual misconduct before he was elected, according to a report published late Thursday.
Allred did not give a reason for dropping her client, but said the withdrawal “has nothing to do with the merits of her case against President Trump.” The move comes just days after a New York court said Zervos could go forward with a defamation suit against Trump, which she initiated after Trump denied her claims against him.

Last week, we were reminded again about the dangers faced by Pakistani Christians even in the most mundane daily activities. This time, a pastor hung a banner advertising his church’s Palm Sunday service. That simple act led to a violent skirmish.
The Organization for Legal Aid (OLA), the Pakistani office of our international affiliate, the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), received a report of the events from the church’s pastor, Haleem Feroz Bhatti.
The church, located in Burewala, approximately 250 kilometers south of Lahore, sat across the street from a home belonging to a fellow Christian. Haleem received permission from the homeowner to hang a banner advertising the church’s upcoming Palm Sunday service. However, in order to hang the banner, Haleem and other church elders needed to remove an old banner that had been hanging since Christmas. The old banner belonged to Muhammad Sharif, a Muslim government official.

The worst anti-Semitic hate crime of 2018 took place outside a restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Izmir Koch, an Ahiska Turkish migrant who had already been in trouble with the law, allegedly demanded to know if there were any Jews around. A man who been at the restaurant replied that he was Jewish. Izmir punched him in the head, and then kicked him while he lay on the ground.
The victim, who wasn’t actually Jewish, suffered bruised ribs and a fractured eye socket.
Now a federal grand jury has indicted Izmir for committing a hate crime. The violent assault was the single worst anti-Semitic hate crime of 2018. So far. And it’s generated very little interest from the same activists and media outlets who had been accusing the White House of not acting against anti-Semitism.

Dhurnal, a village in Chakwal district of Punjab, was home to the once legendary bandit Muhammad Khan. The stories of his criminal exploits reached almost mythical proportions in the 1960s.
Today, Dhurnal is a highly developed settlement. It is linked by road to many nearby towns and cities. (The tehsil town of Tala Gang is 45 kilometres to its east and Chakwal city another 45 kilometres in the same direction.) It has two government high schools for boys and one for girls. It also has separate degree colleges for boys and girls. The literacy rate, especially among women, is higher in Dhurnal than in most other villages across Punjab.
The village has another, though dubious, distinction: its women have never cast their votes since the 1960s. Their men have stopped them from voting.
