Mueller’s Investigation Flouts Justice Department Standards
These columns have many times observed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s failure to set limits on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. To trigger the appointment of a special counsel, federal regulations require the Justice Department to identify the crimes that warrant investigation and prosecution — crimes that the Justice Department is too conflicted to investigate in the normal course; crimes that become the parameters of the special counsel’s jurisdiction.
Rosenstein, instead, put the cart before the horse: Mueller was invited to conduct a fishing expedition, a boundless quest to hunt for undiscovered crimes, rather than an investigation and prosecution of known crimes.
That deviation, it turns out, is not the half of it. With Rosenstein’s passive approval, Mueller is shredding Justice Department charging policy by alleging earth-shattering crimes, then cutting a sweetheart deal that shields the defendant from liability for those crimes and from the penalties prescribed by Congress. The special counsel, moreover, has become a legislature unto himself, promulgating the new, grandiose crime of “conspiracy against the United States” by distorting the concept of “fraud.”

China to ban citizens with bad ‘social credit’ rating from taking flights or using trains for up to a year
President Xi Jinping’s plan based on principle ‘once untrustworthy, always restricted’ to come into effect on 1 May
China said it will begin applying its so-called social credit system to flights and trains and stop people who have committed misdeeds from taking such transport for up to a year.
People who would be put on the restricted lists included those found to have committed acts like spreading false information about terrorism and causing trouble on flights, as well as those who used expired tickets or smoked on trains, according to two statements issued on the National Development and Reform Commission’s website on Friday.
Those found to have committed financial wrongdoings, such as employers who failed to pay social insurance or people who have failed to pay fines, would also face these restrictions, said the statements which were dated 2 March.

WASHINGTON — As a few snowflakes fell in D.C. Friday morning, one D.C. Council member took to Facebook to vent about the weather, seeming to embrace an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that a wealthy Jewish family is controlling the weather.
“It just started snowing out of nowhere this morning. Y’all better pay attention to this climate control,” said Trayon White Sr. (D-Ward 8) in the March 16 Facebook video shown above, courtesy The Washington Post.
“It’s climate manipulation and D.C. keep talking about ‘we are a resilient city’ and that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.”
The Rothschild family is a wealthy family of bankers from Europe who have been the subject of many conspiracy theories stemming from anti-Semitic prejudice that allege they are manipulating world events to their advantage.
The Washington Post said they reached out to White for clarification, to which he wrote, “The video says what it says.”
At around 9 p.m. Sunday, White posted a response on his various social media platforms, apologizing to the Jewish community.

There’s a lot of evidence mounting that solar cycle 25 will usher in a new grand solar minimum. Since about October 2005, when the sun’s magnetic activity went into a sharp fall, solar activity has been markedly lower, with solar cycle 24 being the lowest in over 100 years.

Brazilians Protest Assassination of Popular Political Activist
The assassination of a popular political activist is sparking mass protests in Brazil.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for 38-year-old Marielle Franco, who was shot in the head four times in the backseat of a car.
Franco’s driver was also killed while taking her home after attending a women’s empowerment event in Rio.
The councilwoman was an outspoken defender of women’s rights and a critic of Brazilian police, sparking suspicion that her death was a politically-motivated execution.

Soon after the House of Representatives found that Democratic IT aide Imran Awan and his family made “unauthorized access” to congressional data, Imran hurriedly vacated his house, renting it in February 2017 to a former Marine. Imran angrily told his new tenant, Andre Taggart, that he was homeless and to refuse any certified mail in Imran’s name, Taggart said.
A lawyer contacted Taggart about some items Imran left behind in the house and threatened to sue if he didn’t return them, saying he’d accuse Taggart of theft, Taggart said. The equipment included Blackberries and “hard drives they look like they tried to destroy,” as well as laptops and “a lot of brand new expensive [printer] toner,” he said. Based on his military training, they appeared to Taggart to be government equipment, and he called the police.
The Capitol Police and FBI arrived to collect the computer equipment, and Taggart moved out of the house in May, he said. In late August, Taggart felt that there was enough distance between Imran and his family that it was safe to tell his story publicly.

Uproar after New Jersey high school allegedly suspends students over gun-range photo
A New Jersey high school came under fire Friday after it allegedly suspended two students over a gun photo taken during a family visit to a shooting range.
News of the unnamed students’ suspension circulated through a Lacey Township Facebook group, according to NJ.com.
Amanda Buron, a Lacey resident and family friend of one of the suspended students said one of the photos shared on SnapChat featured four rifles, ammunition clips and a gun duffel with the caption “fun day at the range,” NJ.com reported.
Buron said the two students received a five-day in-school suspension after the picture drew the attention of Lacey Township High School officials, who argued that it violated the school’s policy on weapons possession.
The school district shortly faced community backlash for the alleged suspension, with many calling for people to appear at the school board’s next meeting on Monday to protest the decision.
The school, however, denied the students were suspended over the picture.

After the murders of much of the staff at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on January 7, 2015, the hostage-taking and slaughter at a kosher supermarket two days later confirmed what was already obvious: France was a target of Islamic terrorism. A huge demonstration, organized in Paris on January 11, brought together a million and a half people, with politicians from around the world in attendance.
For a brief moment, France seemed to be the country where the multitudes were ready to stand up for freedom of speech, and the government was ready to fight for Western values.
Unfortunately, that impression did not last long.
For years, freedom of speech in France has been in the process of being crushed, particularly regarding Islam and Islamic terrorism. Journalists who said that Islam often did not look much like a religion of peace but more like a religion of war were systematically and harshly prosecuted. Charlie Hebdo’s new director and editor-in-chief were also not spared: they were sued as early as 2006, the year the magazine republished the Danish Mohammed cartoons. They were sued again in 2007, 2012 and 2013. The writer Michel Houellebecq was summoned to court in 2010 for saying that Islam is a “stupid” religion. The first judicial sentence against the polemist Éric Zemmour dates from 2011. The website Riposte Laïque was established in 2007 to fight censorship, defend secularism, and preserve the right to criticize Islam. Lawsuits against its founder, Pierre Cassen, immediately became overwhelming.

Yesterday, while many Europeans are still pilloried for viewing mass migration from Muslim-majority countries as a threat to Western culture — and are still accused of “xenophobia,” “Islamophobia” and “fear-mongering” — the city of Afrin, in the Kurdish area of Syria, fell to Turkey.
At the same time, a prominent Turkish government official has been openly and proudly declaring that the demography of Europe is changing in favor of Muslims.

“Turkey’s president on Monday vowed to expand military operations across northern Syria and even into neighboring Iraq after his forces drove Syrian Kurdish fighters from the northern Syrian town of Afrin.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the two-monthlong Afrin campaign was the “most important phase” of the military operation launched on Jan. 20, which is aimed at driving Syrian Kurdish forces out of areas along the border. Turkey views the Syrian Kurdish militiamen as terrorists because of their links to Kurdish insurgents fighting inside Turkey.
Erdogan said Turkish troops and allied Syrian forces would now press eastward, toward the town of Manbij and areas east of the Euphrates River, including Ras al-Ayn and Ayn al-Arab, the Arabic name for the Kurdish town of Kobani. Those areas are controlled by U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces, and U.S. troops are stationed there.
“We’ll continue this process until we completely abolish this corridor,” Erdogan said. Turkey first launched military operations in Syria in 2016, and Erdogan has repeatedly said it will not allow a “terror corridor” along its border.
Erdogan said Turkish troops could also cross into Iraq to drive out Kurdish militants from the region of Sinjar, if the Iraqi government does not act against militants in the area. Turkey says the region is becoming a headquarters for outlawed Kurdish rebels who have been fighting an insurgency in Turkey’s southeast since 1984.
“One night, we could suddenly enter Sinjar,” Erdogan said, speaking at a ceremony for judicial appointments in Ankara.
He said his forces might also go as far as Qamishli, a Syrian town where the Syrian government controls the airport and a security zone.
The Syrian Kurdish People’s Defense Units, or YPG, withdrew from Afrin on Sunday after a Turkish thrust into the town center. They have vowed to continue the fight, using hit and run attacks against Turkish troops in Afrin.
Turkey’s state-run news agency said 11 people — seven civilians and four Turkish-backed Syrian fighters — were killed in an explosion in a building in the town center as it was being cleared of booby traps. Anadolu News agency said the bomb was reportedly left by Syrian Kurdish fighters.
On Monday, the European Union’s top diplomat criticized Turkey over its military offensive in Afrin, calling on Ankara to work to halt the fighting in Syria. Federica Mogherini told reporters in Brussels that international efforts in Syria should be aimed at “de-escalating the military activities and not escalating them.” In reference to the Afrin offensive, she said: “I am worried about this.”
She urged Turkey, Russia and Iran— who have brokered “de-escalation zones” around Syria— to ensure the agreements are implemented.
A senior Kurdish official, Aldar Khalil, called the Turkish offensive an “occupation” that endangers the rest of the region, saying “the whole of northern Syria is in danger.”
Erdogan insisted Turkey had no intention of “occupying” Syria, saying it was merely clearing the border area of terrorists.
Syrian Kurdish officials have said that more than 800 YPG fighters were killed in the 58 days of fighting for Afrin, and estimated that 500 civilians were killed. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at more than 280 civilians and 1,500 Kurdish fighters.

Readers would be well-advised to remember that the Russian ‘suitcase nukes’ were very maintenance intensive (as in “short lifetime”). Hundreds of schools across England received an electronic bomb threat on Monday, causing some to evacuate.

Jerusalem (CNN)A worker at the French Consulate in Jerusalem has been arrested for smuggling weapons from Gaza into East Jerusalem and the West Bank using his diplomatic immunity, the Israel Security Agency (ISA) announced Monday after a joint investigation with Israeli police.
According to the ISA, Romain Franck, a 24-year-old French citizen, smuggled 70 guns and two assault rifles through the Erez Border Crossing between Gaza and Israel using a consular vehicle, which goes through reduced security checks because of its diplomatic status.
Franck allegedly smuggled weapons through the crossing on five separate occasions over the last two months, the ISA said.

A Good Samaritan stopped to help a couple in a car that had crashed in the Oakland hills early Saturday, but things turned bad fast in a flurry of fists and blood, with one man in jail before the morning was over, police said.

PARIS (Reuters) – France will toughen rules on hate speech to ensure social media giants do more to remove racist and anti-Semitic content from internet, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Monday.
The announcement comes as the 28 European Union countries work on rules that would compel Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Google to be more proactive in filtering and weeding out hate speech on their platforms.
“These days a newspaper director is criminally responsible if hateful comments are posted on its website but if you run a social network anything goes,” Philippe said in a speech on France’s policy on racism.
“Nobody is going to convince me that the social networks live in space. What gets published and circulated in France is published and circulated in France and must answer to the laws of the French republic.”

Wiley noted that while he left CA before it began working for President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, he knew of talks the company had with the campaign — and declared that the company “was founded on misappropriated data of at least 50 million Facebook users.”
Facebook suspended CA from its platform after claiming it learned from a New York Times report that the company had never deleted the data is gathered from users.
“I think it’s important for Americans to know what this company has been doing with their data,” Wylie said, after explaining the firm’s ties to Russia. “It’s really important to find out, was this data used to help elect Donald Trump?”
“Cambridge Analytica was meeting with Corey Lewandowski in 2015 before Trump had even announced and offering the services that I’m talking about right now,” he added, referring to Trump’s first campaign manager.
Wylie went on to explain how CA used an idea called “informational dominance” to bombard users with a “web of disinformation.”
“This is a company that really took fake news to the next level by pairing it algorithms.”
The whistleblower also batted away allegations from CA that he has a vendetta against the firm and that they have a restraining order against him.
“We need to step back for a second and depoliticize this. This is about the safety of Americans and the integrity of the American democratic process.”

Do read the post, if you want to assure yourself that the goals of the various campaigns and data-analytics firms were exactly the same. You will see that the goal in 2012 was what Cambridge Analytica was aiming for in the run-up to 2016. Numerous media outlets breathlessly celebrated the Obama 2012 campaign’s success in achieving it.
The New York Times, you see, has started populating a new Sudden Theme for us: that Muh Trump did something really bad with user data from Facebook, and there’s a whistleblower and a Big Leak and foreign influence and everything, even if, well, no laws against what anyone did can really be cited.
The research fool could have waited a day and spared herself a lot of work. An Obama campaign operative from 2012 stepped forward on Twitter on Sunday night to announce that, yeah, in 2012, they were doing the same basic thing Cambridge Analytica did. If you’re one of the 2.13 billion people who use Facebook during any given month, you might want to use your account with a “healthy dose of skepticism.”
That’s according to millennial data scientist and self-proclaimed whistleblower Christopher Wylie, 28, who recently revealed the surprising way data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica gathered personal data of more than 50 million American Facebook users without their knowledge.
Cambridge Analytica has denied violating Facebook’s terms of service.
As an employee at Cambridge Analytica, Wylie used his experience in coding and data science to take the personal information of U.S. voters and target them with personalized political ads, according to Guardian reporter Carole Cadwalladr’s yearlong investigation published in The Observer, which is the Sunday edition of The Guardian.
While Cadwalladr questioned if Wylie could be “the millennials’ first great whistleblower,” National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden weighed in on the matter as well.
“It’s something that I regret,” Wylie told Cadwalladr, adding that “it was a grossly unethical experiment because you’re playing with the psychology of an entire country without their consent or awareness.”
Based on the report from The Observer, as well as other exclusive reports, here are four facts to know about Wylie.
Wylie grew up in British Columbia, Canada. When he was 6 years old, he was abused by a mentally unstable person, The Observer reported. Though the school tried to conceal the issue, a court battle followed.
Wylie said the legal battle was “particularly difficult” for his parents, a doctor and psychiatrist, respectively, “because they had a deeper understanding of what that does to a person long term.”
While Wylie’s childhood and school career never recovered, Cadwalladr reported, he successfully sued the British Columbia Ministry of Education at the age of 14.
As a result, he forced the agency to change its inclusion policies around bullying.
He went from school dropout to law student
On top of dealing with years of growing up listening to psychologists, Wylie told The Observer, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a teenager. Wylie reportedly hated school and dropped out at 16, but he developed an appreciation for politics.
He interned at the Canadian Parliament and at 17, he worked for the office of the leader of the Canadian opposition. Former Barack Obama political strategist Ken Strasma then taught 18-year-old Wylie all about microtargeting and data politics, NPR reported.
The following year, Wylie taught himself to code and at 20, he began studying law at the London School of Economics. At 21, he continued his career in politics and worked for the Liberal Democrats in the U.K.
“Politics is like the mob, though,” Wylie told The Observer. “You never really leave. I got a call from the Lib Dems. They wanted to upgrade their databases and voter targeting. So, I combined working for them with studying for my degree.”
He was 24 when he picked Cambridge Analytica over working at Deloitte
According to The Observer, Wylie’s position as a political strategist with advanced data science skills allowed him to score a British Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa, a U.K. work visa granted to only 200 people yearly.
Before becoming Cambridge Analytica’s head of research, The Observer reported Wylie “had no clue that he was walking into the middle of a nexus of defense and intelligence projects, private contractors and cutting-edge cyberweaponry.”
Wylie said he had even received a job offer from professional services firm Deloitte.
“The thing I think about all the time is, what if I’d taken a job at Deloitte instead? They offered me one. I just think if I’d taken literally any other job, Cambridge Analytica wouldn’t exist. You have no idea how much I brood on this,” Wylie said.
At age 24, Wylie gained an interest “in using inherent psychological traits to affect voters’ behavior and had assembled a team of psychologists and data scientists, some of them affiliated with Cambridge University,” The New York Times reported.
At the time, he was studying for a Ph.D. in fashion trend forecasting and Stephen Bannon was his boss. Wylie and more than half of the team he put together left the company by early 2015, the Times reported.
He’s blocked from Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp but just joined Twitter
Facebook suspended Wylie’s Facebook account and, as a result, his accounts on subsidiary companies Instagram and Whatsapp.
Because Facebook determined Wylie had not properly deleted the tens of millions of Facebook users’ data, the social media company suspended his account, as well as those of other involved parties.
Wylie instead went to Twitter to share proof of his suspended Facebook and Instagram accounts, tweeting the “Downside to @facebook also banning me on @instagram is missing out on my daily dose of well curated food pics and thirst traps #millennial #whistleblower.”

OTTAWA—A Canadian data expert who set off an international uproar over the alleged leak of private Facebook user data lost his job years ago in the office of former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff, in large part because he was pushing a nascent form of the controversial data-harvesting technique, says a former senior party insider.
Christopher Wylie, a 28-year-old originally from British Columbia, has told news outlets of how the inappropriately obtained private information of tens of millions of Facebook users helped political movements score 2016 victories in the U.S. election and the U.K.’s Brexit referendum.
Wylie has said he played a pivotal role in those efforts and maintains his ideas made a key contribution to the creation of Cambridge Analytica, the company at the centre of the data-mining projects.
Years ago, when he was working in Ignatieff’s office, Wylie had already begun to develop strategies on how politicians could capitalize on data collected through social media, said a former senior Liberal insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.
At the time, the idea was viewed as too invasive and raised concerns with the Liberals, 🙂 🙂 😉 who declined to have anything to do with it, said the insider: Wylie’s recommended data-collection approach spooked party officials to the point that it became an significant factor behind their decision not to renew his contract in 2009.
“Let’s say he had boundary issues on data even back then,” said the source, who noted that Wylie’s recent descriptions of his methods in media reports sounded familiar.
“He effectively pitched an earlier version of exactly this to us back in 2009 and we said, ‘No.’”
Some of his ideas may not have even been fully possible at the time, but the “whip-smart” Wylie appears to have continued to pursue them, said the insider.
Wylie, who left Cambridge Analytica in 2014, has not responded to repeated interview requests from The Canadian Press.
Reports by The New York Times and The Observer of London say U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign hired Cambridge Analytica to collect private information from the Facebook profiles of more than 50 million users.
The reports say the firm exploited private social media activity to help allow the Trump campaign to better target voters by profiling their behaviour and personalities ahead of the U.S. election.
On Saturday, Trump’s campaign denied using the firm’s data, saying it relied on the Republican National Committee for its information.
In a statement Monday, Cambridge Analytica “strongly denied” the allegations that it had improperly obtained Facebook data. It also denied that the Facebook data was used by the Trump campaign and says it didn’t work on the Brexit referendum.
The company insisted Wylie was a contractor, not a founder.
For Facebook, the controversy appears to be taking a toll. On Monday, Facebook shares fell $12.53 (U.S.) or 6.77 per cent to $172.56 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Facebook has denied the data collection was a breach because people knowingly provided their information. The company has said University of Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan accessed the information after he requested it from users who gave their consent when they chose to sign up for his test via his Facebook app.
Facebook has also said it would ban Cambridge Analytica, saying the company improperly obtained information from 270,000 people who downloaded Kogan’s app. Facebook first learned of the breach more than two years ago, but hasn’t disclosed it until now.
On Monday, Facebook said it hired a digital forensics firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Cambridge Analytica to determine if the Facebook data the company collected still exists or if it’s been destroyed. Cambridge Analytica agreed to give the auditor complete access to its servers and systems, Facebook said.
The social-media giant said it’s also asked Wylie and Kogan to submit to an audit as well. It said Kogan has given his verbal agreement to do so and Wylie has declined.
The Facebook data breach exposed by Wylie in recent days has caused a commotion on both sides of the Atlantic and has caught the attention of Canada’s privacy watchdog.
“Recent media reports regarding the use of personal information posted on Facebook for political purposes raise serious privacy concerns,” Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien said in the statement.
“Our office will be reaching out to Facebook to seek information regarding whether Canadians’ personal information was affected by the issues raised in those reports. That will help us determine possible next steps.”
Therrien also said his office has offered to assist an investigation into the matter already launched by the U.K. information commissioner’s office. He said his ultimate goal is to ensure that the privacy rights of Canadian Facebook users are protected.
Asked Monday about the possible Facebook breach, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the government will take every step to protect the integrity of the Canadian democratic system.
“When an issue like that emerges, we all need to take it very, very seriously, make sure we get the facts and respond accordingly,” Goodale said in Ottawa.
“This is a rapidly moving, rapidly evolving situation because of technology. What we know or think we know today is likely to be radically different six months from now. And we have to be alert to every twist and turn along the way.”
On Monday, Wylie told NBC’s Today in an interview that Cambridge Analytica used data to create profiling algorithms that enabled the company to “explore mental vulnerabilities of people.” It enabled the firm to inject information into different forms of online content, so that people saw things that may not have been true, he said.
“This is a company that really took fake news to the next level,” Wylie said.
He also said he had left Cambridge Analytica before it joined the Trump campaign. But he added he knew the company met with Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski in 2015, before Trump had announced his candidacy.

“French actress Brigitte Bardot has spoken out against the state of her country, saying that Islamists are “practically everywhere” and that France should not resemble Algeria.
Speaking to the French weekly Valeurs Actuelles, Bardot said that France is not what it once was. “I have been brought up in honor, patriotism, love and respect for my country, and when I see what it has become, I feel desperate,” she said.
The 83-year-old also said that it is “unacceptable” to see burqas become commonplace in France, and Islamists are “practically everywhere.”
I did not fight against French Algeria to accept an Algerian France, I do not touch the culture, the identity and the customs of others, let’s not touch mine,” Bardot said.
The former actress didn’t mince her words when it came to her thoughts on the European Union either. “We have to get out of it,” she said. She went on to note her affinity for former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, who she described as a “good guy.”

“Civilian sources told Syrian state media Monday that three US helicopters had evacuated suspected Daesh (ISIS) commanders from northeast Syria.
Speaking to SANA, the sources said that the military helicopters had landed in an area between the villages of al-Jissi and Kalu, 2 km south of the Tal Hamis township in the Qamishli District of al-Hasakah Governate.
From there, servicemen accompanied four persons from a house believed to contain Daesh* leaders of Iraqi nationality to the helicopters, which then evacuated them from the area to an unknown destination.
Damascus, Tehran and the Russian military have repeatedly charged the US military of sketchy dealings with the terrorist group.
In late February, Syrian media reported that US helicopters had transported Daesh commanders and their family members to Sabah al-Khair, about 20 km south of al-Hasakah, where US forces have been accused of establishing a terrorist training base.
Earlier this month, a senior Iranian commander provided the Iranian foreign ministry with what he said was proof of US collusion with the terrorists.
Late last year, the Russian Defense Ministry accused the US-led coalition of interacting with Daesh’s remnants in Syria, and of using the Al-Hasakah refugee camp as a militant-training area for the formation of a so-called ‘New Syrian Army’ consisting of hundreds of Islamist militants, to continue the fight against the Syrian government.”

Anna Campbell had been fighting with Kurdish militia in an all-female branch of the Kurdish YPG, the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), in the besieged city of Afrin when she died on Thursday.
The 26-year-old from Lewes, East Sussex, is the first British woman to have been killed fighting for Kurdish forces in the war zone. Seven men from the UK have lost their lives fighting with the Kurds.

“Afghan officials say bombs attached to motorcycles have killed four people in separate attacks.
One struck outside a sports stadium in eastern Nangarhar province, killing three on Monday. Akramuddin, a provincial police official, says the explosion occurred as former warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was holding a rally at the stadium in Jalalabad, the province’ capital.
Akramuddin, who like many Afghans uses only one name, says the blast took place as the rally ended. Ten people were wounded.
Hekmatyar, previously a declared terrorist by the United States, signed a peace deal with President Ashraf Ghani in 2017 and was removed from the list.
The second motorcycle bomb exploded in western Herat province. Spokesman Jelani Farhad says one person was killed and seven were wounded.
No groups have taken responsibility for the attacks.”

“Iran has sentenced to death a supporter of a Sufi leader who rammed a bus into a group of policemen last month, killing three, before being arrested.
The incident in Tehran took place during February clashes between the Sufi leader’s followers and police.
Monday’s report by the official IRNA news agency says the convicted man, Mohammad Salas, can appeal his verdict with 20 days. Salas testified during hearings last week that he had no intention of killing the policemen but was trying to flee the clashes.
Sufi leader Nourali Tabandeh’s supporters had rallied near his residence fearing his possible arrest, despite police assurances they had no such intention.

Soon after the House of Representatives found that Democratic IT aide Imran Awan and his family made “unauthorized access” to congressional data, Imran hurriedly vacated his house, renting it in February 2017 to a former Marine. Imran angrily told his new tenant, Andre Taggart, that he was homeless and to refuse any certified mail in Imran’s name, Taggart said.
A lawyer contacted Taggart about some items Imran left behind in the house and threatened to sue if he didn’t return them, saying he’d accuse Taggart of theft, Taggart said. The equipment included Blackberries and “hard drives they look like they tried to destroy,” as well as laptops and “a lot of brand new expensive [printer] toner,” he said. Based on his military training, they appeared to Taggart to be government equipment, and he called the police.
The Capitol Police and FBI arrived to collect the computer equipment, and Taggart moved out of the house in May, he said. In late August, Taggart felt that there was enough distance between Imran and his family that it was safe to tell his story publicly.
