Investigation into crosses on mosque site.

The police are investigating the placing of crosses on the construction site of a mosque in Enschede. ‘Together with the judiciary, we are investigating whether this can be classed as discrimination’, a spokesman for the police said on Sunday.

Members of the anti-Islam movement Pegida once again protested against the construction of the mosque in Enschede on Saturday. In a video that the organization posted on Twitter and Facebook, you can see that a number of white crosses have been placed on the construction site.

The crosses stand for the people who have been murdered, according to a voice in the film, during attacks in Manchester, Brussels, London, Barcelona, Stockholm, Berlin, Paris. “Here you see what Islam is capable of,” says the voice.

The municipality has now removed the crosses. A spokesperson said Saturday that the land is owned by the municipality. In November Pegida also protested against the arrival of the mosque. In a video that the organization published then, someone in a dark robe could be seen on the future construction site smearing a wooden cross, reportedly with pig’s blood. At the time, Mayor Onno van Veldhuizen called that action disgusting.
