  1. Saudi Arabia make DRAMATIC military reforms following stalemate of WAR in Yemen (express, Feb 28, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/925057/saudi-arabia-military-reform-stalemate-war-yemen

“SAUDI Arabia has undergone a sudden reshuffle of its armed forces with substitutions of senior military commanders, including the Chief of Staff, following the continued stalemate in the Kingdom’s war in Yemen, according to reports.

Saudi King, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, appointed a new military Chief of Staff in a flush of royal decrees, naming new commanders for both the army and the air forces.

The reshuffle is widely considered to be part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s push to reform Saudi Arabia’s governing structure and consolidate his power.

The heir is said to have expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in the Saudi armed forces two years ago.

At the time, Salman said: “It is unacceptable that we are the world’s third or fourth biggest country in military spending but our army is ranked in the twenties. There is a problem.”

Currently, the Kingdom is wrapped up in a prolonged military campaign in Yemen, where the Saudi-led coalition is battling Shiite Houthi rebels.

Since March 2015, the campaign has attempted to propel ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power.

In a humanitarian catastrophe, the war has claimed the lives of thousands.

Saudi Arabia’s military shake-up follows last year’s anti-corruption drive, steered by the crown prince, which shook down dubious billionaire princes, ministers and businessmen…”

    • If one were to cut the shoelaces of a Saudi recruit in a group of recruits, the others would run over him while he was telling his drill instructor to get him new shoelaces. If the drill instructor told him to improvise, the trainee–fearful of punishment and without aclue as to what “improvise” means would get on his knees and beg for new shoelaces.

The problem is using the word “unacceptable”. It does not indicate a deisre to learn and fix, but it does bespeak a desire to badger whoever wants to sell the Saudis more weapons systems.

  2. Hazmat incident near Pentagon: 11 people sick from ‘suspicious letter’ sent to military base (RT, Feb 28, 2018)
    https://www.rt.com/usa/419982-hazmat-us-military-letter/

“Eleven people became ill at a US military base in Arlington, Virginia, a short walk away from the Pentagon, after opening a suspicious letter. Three were taken to the hospital after a hazardous material situation was declared.

The Arlington Fire Department responded to a hazardous material call at Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall at 4:30 p.m. local time. Fire crews and hazmat units rushed to the scene. Three people were taken to the hospital and are currently in a stable condition, Arlington County Fire Department reported on Twitter.

At least five people were displaying symptoms such as nose bleeds and itching after coming in contact with the substance, according to local news outlet ARLnow. The roads leading to the base have been sealed by police, it reported.

The base was evacuated as a precaution, a Marine official said, according to ABC News. The US Marine Corps reported on Twitter that “several Marines are receiving medical care as a result of this incident.” The response to the situation has been coordinated with the FBI, it said…”

  3. ‘You have to call it by name’: Merkel publicly admits ‘no-go areas’ in Germany (RT, Feb 28, 2018)
    https://www.rt.com/news/419978-germany-merkel-no-go-zones/

““No-go areas” do exist in Germany, Angela Merkel admitted in an interview, adding that the arrival of “so many refugees” in the country “has raised multiple questions.”

Speaking with RTL, Merkel acknowledged that there are areas in Germany where people cannot feel safe. She also made it clear that it’s time for the authorities to do something in order to ensure public safety.

“It’s always a point to me that [ensuring] domestic security is the state’s obligation, the state has the monopoly of power, the state has to make sure that people have the right to it whenever they meet and move in a public space,” Merkel argued.

She then took aim at “no-go areas,” which gained notoriety all across Europe during the refugee influx that reached its peak in 2015. Merkel bluntly dismissed the claim that ‘no-go areas’ are non-existent in Germany, stressing instead that “there are such spaces, and you have to call that by name and you have to do something about it.”

Merkel, who is steps away from her official fourth term as the Germany chancellor, said her government had a “tough time” in the past. She then referred to harsh criticism over her “open-door policy” and her reluctance to set an upper limit for the new refugee arrivals: “Of course, the arrival of so many refugees has raised multiple questions.”

However, some critics said that Merkel did not allow much self-criticism during her speech. Merkel is not known to have said that she wouldn’t have acted another way when the migrant crisis broke out…”

  5. ‘Exceptional’: ‘Arab Boy’ Detained for Alleged Rape of Swedish Man at Gunpoint (sputniknews, Feb 28, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201802281062063286-sweden-boy-rapes-man/

“The Swedish authorities stressed that it was highly unusual for minors to be arrested in Sweden, let alone on suspicion of rape.

A 17-year-old immigrant boy has been arrested for the suspected rape of a 37-year-old man while holding him at gunpoint, the Fria Tider news outlet reported.

The teenager arranged a meeting with his alleged victim in Malmö for a reason yet not established. During the meeting, the immigrant reportedly directed a firearm at the man, then proceeded to rape and rob him.

According to Fria Tider, the boy has an ostensibly Arabic name and is registered at an address in Malmö. He was born in 2000.

Prosecutor Ida Killeslätt told the Sydsvenskan daily that the operational assumption is that the boy agreed to sell sex to his victim. However, no evidence of this has been found so far.

“There is no relation between the plaintiff and the suspected 17-year-old. However, they appear to have known each other from before,” Killeslätt explained.

The 17-year-old boy denied allegations of rape and claimed that it was a question of purchasing sex from the 37-year-old man.

According to Fria Tider, the boy was charged with gross rape, attempted extortion, assault and unlawful threats. Charges of robbery were later dropped to a lack of evidence.

The Swedish authorities stressed that it is highly unusual for minors to be arrested in Sweden, let alone for the suspected rape of older men. However, the prosecution argued that there was a risk that the boy could destroy evidence and continue to commit crimes.

“There is a risk that the suspect could communicate with third parties and in this way affect the investigation,” Killeslätt said, stressing that there was no viable alternatives, such as referring the suspect to the social services.

The suspect is known by the police and has a record for traffic violations. The penalty for rape is up to four years in prison.

The Swedish city of Malmö has seen five reports of group rape in recent months, which is indicative of the situation in Swedish urban areas in general, as the number of reported rapes has risen by 50 percent in the past two years alone. Overall, Sweden saw a record of 7,230 rapes reported in 2017. According to the Expressen newspaper, only 8 percent of reported rapes are solved.

In the fall of 2017, a private survey, unapproved by Swedish authorities, revealed a prevalence of immigrants in sexual crimes, with over 90 percent of gang rapes reportedly perpetrated by people of non-Swedish descent.”

    • It is lucky Sweden has the largest Male rape clinic in the world. It shows Sweden had some foresight when they opened the floodgates.

    • Russian TV Caught Trying To Pass Off Video Game Footage As Combat Footage In Tribute To Its Troops

Russia’s state propaganda arm honored the country’s troops Sunday, but something wasn’t quite right about some of the combat footage.

In a special broadcast for Defender of the Fatherland Day, Channel 1 celebrated Russian soldiers “who value duty and honor above their own lives.” Combat footage from Syria showed Russian airstrikes followed by the explosion of military vehicles seen through a sniper’s scope. It turns out one of the image came from a video game, according to the BBC.

Apparently, the image was from one of the games in the popular Arma series.

“Mistakes happen,” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said Monday in response to the incident. The person responsible has reportedly been punished, according to The Washington Post.

This is not the first time Russia has “mistaken” video game footage for actual combat footage.

  7. h/t Mosaic: John Adams Comes to the Knesset [My dear Potus-2, delightful proto-Zionist.]

Welcoming Vice-President Mike Pence to the Knesset, both Benjamin Netanyahu and the opposition leader Isaac Herzog cited a statement made by America’s first vice-president, John Adams, in 1819: “I really wish the Jews again in Judea an independent nation.”

    Noah’s Ark— and Ours

If any founder deserves to be celebrated in Israel, it is Adams. Thomas Jefferson thought little of the Jewish intellectual legacy. But the Jews were “the most glorious nation that ever inhabited this Earth,” Adams insisted. “The Romans and their empire were but a bauble in comparison [to] the Jews. They have given religion to three-quarters of the globe and have influenced the affairs of mankind more, and more happily, than any other nation ancient or modern.” . . .

  8. Palantir has secretly been using New Orleans to test its predictive policing technology
Palantir deployed a predictive policing system in New Orleans that even city council members don’t know about

In May and June 2013, when New Orleans’ murder rate was the sixth-highest in the United States, the Orleans Parish district attorney handed down two landmark racketeering indictments against dozens of men accused of membership in two violent Central City drug trafficking gangs, 3NG and the 110ers. Members of both gangs stood accused of committing 25 murders as well as several attempted killings and armed robberies.

Subsequent investigations by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and local agencies produced further RICO indictments, including that of a 22-year-old man named Evans “Easy” Lewis, a member of a gang called the 39ers who was accused of participating in a drug distribution ring and several murders.

According to Ronal Serpas, the department’s chief at the time, one of the tools used by the New Orleans Police Department to identify members of gangs like 3NG and the 39ers came from the Silicon Valley company Palantir. The company provided software to a secretive NOPD program that traced people’s ties to other gang members, outlined criminal histories, analyzed social media, and predicted the likelihood that individuals would commit violence or become a victim. As part of the discovery process in Lewis’ trial, the government turned over more than 60,000 pages of documents detailing evidence gathered against him from confidential informants, ballistics, and other sources — but they made no mention of the NOPD’s partnership with Palantir, according to a source familiar with the 39ers trial.

  9. Russia Claims It Now Has Lasers To Shoot Satellites

A defense source tells Russian media that military engineers have advanced work on the next big anti-satellite weapon.

Russian defense companies have created a plane-mounted laser that can hit satellites — at least according to an anonymous source quoted by Russian news agency Interfax. On Saturday, an Interfax report cited the source as saying that weapons maker Almaz-Antey has “completed work on the anti-satellite complex,” which includes the laser and associated ground control gear.

Independent and Western observers have not yet verified the claim. But the Russian program does exist. Last April, Almaz-Antey general designer Pavel Sozinov told Russian news agency Ria Novosti that Russian leadership had ordered the company to develop weapons that could interfere electronically with or achieve “direct functional destruction of those elements deployed in orbit.”

The program builds off the Soviet-era Beriev A-60, a gas laser fitted inside a heavily modified Ilyushin Il-76MD cargo plane. The effort also bears some resemblance to the Soviets’ 1984 Kontakt 30P6 program, which sought to modify a MiG-31D to draw targeting data from the Krona-N space and satellite observation complex and shoot down an enemy satellite with a 79M6 Kontakt missile.

  10. Justices Vote Immigrants Can Be Detained Indefinitely Without Bond

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 11:04 AM PT — Tues. Febraury 27, 2018

The Supreme Court ruled immigrants can be detained by authorities indefinitely, causing a major blow to immigration advocates.

The high court ruled on Tuesday that that asylum seekers and even those with permanent legal status do not have the right to periodic bond hearings.

In a five-to-three vote, the justices said immigration officials are authorized to detain certain aliens while they review their legal status.

Justice Elena Kagan recused herself from the vote due to her time as Obama’s solicitor general.

This decision overturns a Ninth Circuit Court ruling, which called for detainees to receive a bond hearing every six months.

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 1:28 PM PT — Tues. February 27, 2018

A Conservative legal group says more than 100,000 non-U.S. citizens are registered to vote in Pennsylvania.

In a lawsuit filed Monday against the state, the Public Interest Legal Foundation claimed Pennsylvania officials have known that non-citizens have been voting in the state for decades.

The suit is based on a glitch that allowed non-citizens applying to renew their driver’s license a chance to register to vote.

The legal group is demanding state officials to turn-over records, which could show the severity of the problem.

The information could be critical in the state’s upcoming special election.

However, Pennsylvania officials are refusing to hand over the data.

  12. Exclusive: Xi confidant set to become China’s new spy master – sources

BEIJING (Reuters) – A vice minister of public security, a close confidant of President Xi Jinping, is tipped to take over as China’s spy master, five sources said, as the country looks to clean up its security apparatus and plug intelligence gaps.

China has poured billions of yuan into domestic security, but the secretive Ministry of State Security and the Ministry of Public Security in recent years have been hit with high-level corruption scandals and intelligence failings.

Wang Xiaohong, 60, a vice minister of public security, will replace Chen Wenqing as minister of state security during the session of parliament which begins on March 5, three sources with ties to the leadership and two foreign diplomats said.

Chen, 58, will become the country’s top prosecutor after a little more than a year as minister of state security, three of the sources said. The ministry is responsible for counter-intelligence, foreign intelligence and national security.

The change of guard is part of a broader cabinet reshuffle during the two-week parliamentary session.

Wang and President Xi have long-standing ties. Wang is a native of the southeastern province of Fujian, where Xi spent 17 years cutting his teeth from 1985 to 2002.

  14. Obama band that brought you Benghazi, Iran ‘deal’ gets back together to challenge Trump
By LU Staff February 27, 2018

Former top Obama administration advisers and other veterans of the Washington foreign policy establishment are forming a new group dedicated to opposing President Donald Trump’s “reckless” foreign policy, which they say has made America less safe over the past year.

The new organization, National Security Action, will be led by co-chairs Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security advisor in the Obama White House, and Jake Sullivan, one of Hillary Clinton’s longtime foreign policy hands.

Rhodes, a key architect of the Iran nuclear deal and the Obama administration’s policies in Libya and Syria, says the group will pool the expertise of former government officials and academics to promote an alternative to Trump’s foreign policy agenda.

“On behalf of the broader Advisory Council, we’ve stood up a nimble, campaign-like structure focused on putting forward an affirmative vision of American leadership,” Rhodes said in a statement Tuesday. “Given the enormous stakes over the next three years, we feel a sense of urgency about the need to substantially impact the public debate on national security and the future of America’s role in the world.”

  21. Why Turkey Wants to Invade the Greek Islands

    by Uzay Bulut
    February 28, 2018 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11954/turkey-threats-greek-islands

There is one issue on which Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its main opposition, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), are in complete agreement: The conviction that the Greek islands are occupied Turkish territory and must be reconquered. So strong is this determination that the leaders of both parties have openly threatened to invade the Aegean.

The only conflict on this issue between the two parties is in competing to prove which is more powerful and patriotic, and which possesses the courage to carry out the threat against Greece. While the CHP is accusing President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s AKP party of enabling Greece to occupy Turkish lands, the AKP is attacking the CHP, Turkey’s founding party, for allowing Greece to take the islands through the 1924 Treaty of Lausanne, the 1932 Turkish-Italian Agreements, and the 1947 Paris Treaty, which recognized the islands of the Aegean as Greek territory.

In 2016, Erdo?an said that Turkey “gave away” the islands that “used to be ours” and are “within shouting distance.” “There are still our mosques, our shrines there,” he said, referring to the Ottoman occupation of the islands.

    Turkey Threatens to Invade Greece

    by Uzay Bulut
    February 19, 2018 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11907/turkey-greece-invasion

In an incident that took place less than two weeks after the Greek Defense Ministry announced that Turkey had violated Greek airspace 138 times in a single day, a Turkish coast guard patrol boat on February 13 rammed a Greek coast guard vessel off the shore of Imia, one of many Greek islands over which Turkey claims sovereignty.

Most of the areas within modern Greece’s current borders were under the occupation of the Ottoman Empire from the mid-15th century until the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and the establishment of the modern Greek state in 1832. The islands, however, like the rest of Greece, are legally and historically Greek, as their names indicate.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), however, and even much of the opposition seem intent on, if not obsessed with, invading and conquering these Greek islands, on the grounds that they are actually Turkish territory.

In December, for instance, Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu, the leader of the main Turkish opposition CHP party, stated that when he wins the election in 2019, he will “invade and take over 18 Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, just as former Turkish PM Bulent Ecevit invaded Cyprus in 1974.” He said that there is “no document” proving that those islands belong to Greece.

Meral Ak?ener, the head of the newly established opposition “Good Party,” has also called for an invasion and conquest of the islands. “What is required must be done,” she tweeted on January 13.

    • When the invasion occurs, not if when, NATO should support Greece. I say should because given the Islamic infiltration into the Western Government the infiltrators may have enough power to prevent any European nation helping Greece. They and the US and Canada also face the problem of the Islamic fighters that our leftist governments have invited into our nations.

The idea of NATO siding with Greece is further complicated by the very real probability that other nations around the world will use the invasion of Greece as a distraction from what they are doing and having another war (small to medium sized) break out in a different region, several regions is more likely.

The left in their arrogance, hubris, stupidity and ambition have set in place the conditions that are leading to WWIII. Will all of the aggressor nations join in some grand alliance like the Axis Powers during WWII? Maybe, maybe not a large number of small wars involving most if not all nations on earth will have the same effect of a New Axis Powers alliance fighting one really big war. In fact the small wars occurring at the same time will cause the fighting to last longer and reignite after one of the small wars is won and our attention is drawn to another war.

  22. Americans Blame Government More Than Guns for Florida Massacre

Most Americans think government error is more responsible than a lack of gun control for the Valentine’s Day massacre at a Florida high school.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 54% of American Adults believe the failure of government agencies to respond to numerous warning signs from the prospective killer is more to blame for the mass shooting. Thirty-three percent (33%) attribute the deaths more to a lack of adequate gun control. Eleven percent (11%) opt for something else. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Among Americans who have children of elementary or secondary school age, 61% think the government is more to blame. Just 23% of these adults fault a lack of adequate gun control more.

Ninety percent (90%) of all Americans say they have been following news reports about the Florida killings at least somewhat closely, with 53% who have been following Very Closely.

    • Most Americans blame government, not guns, for Florida massacre
      Rasmussen February 27, 2018

      https://libertyunyielding.com/2018/02/27/americans-blame-government-not-guns-florida-massacre/

Ed. – A word of caution: I still blame Nikolas Cruz for the massacre. I also believe our morally incoherent and in some ways inexcusable culture bears a share of the blame, setting a clearly troubled young man with special needs up for failure. But where the government we pay for was supposed to intervene against warning signs flashing in throbbing neon red, and failed to, for no valid reason, it is fair to place blame there too. The gun is not the problem here, any more than the 767 airliner was the problem when two of them were flown into the Twin Towers on 9/11.]

    • The shooter is responsible for his actions and bears the primary blame. The FBI, The County Sheriff and The School all dropped the ball several times and allowed the shooter to carry out his evil attack. Their failure was caused by 1) Obama’s school discipline programs 2) the Sheriff wanting to keep the reported number of crimes low and thus didn’t file the reports of the shooter and his threat. 3) The school not filing the proper reports because they didn’t want reports of crimes from their school. 4) The culture that cultural Marxism has created for the US. Back in the 50s and 60s the schools taught morals and values and you didn’t have massive3 shootings like this even though firearms were much easier to purchase.

What we need to do is to take a long hard look at what wen wrong and how to ensure that no one in the future allows another person like the shooter to be ignored. We won’t do this by passing new laws in the heat of emotion or by depriving people of their God Given Rights that are protected by the Bill of Rights. We have to bring back the idea of individual responsibility to go with individual rights.

  25. Saudis plan new mega-city with more square miles than Vermont
    UK Independent February 27, 2018

[Ed. – Independent makes the comparison to New York City, but the U.S. actually has a lot of cities bigger in land area than NYC. (The largest by far is Sitka, AK, with 2,870 square miles. You can kind of see where that’s going.) The Saudis, apparently acting without the restraining hand of an overlawyered “environmentalist” industry, are planning a completely new city bigger than five of the American states. As one would hope, the palaces are going in first.]

Saudi Arabia is building a $500 billion mega-city that’s 33 times the size of New York City

Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest oil exporter, but falling oil prices have made it more difficult for the country to pay its oil workers.

Now the Saudi Arabian government has come up with a project that could give its economy a boost: a $500 billion mega-city that will connect to Jordan and Egypt and be powered completely by renewable energy.

In October 2017, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the project, called NEOM, at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh. It will be financed by the Saudi government and private investors, according to Reuters.

  26. Release the Florida School Shooting Surveillance Video

Open government isn’t just good government. It’s the public’s right.

In Florida, the Broward County Sheriff’s office and Broward County school district are fighting to keep exterior surveillance video from the day of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hidden from view. As journalists and citizens who’ve waged uphill battles against secrecy well know, government agencies too often invoke broad disclosure exemptions in the name of protecting public safety when they’re really just trying to protect their own jobs.

Feckless Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and media-luvin’ school Superintendent Robert Runcie are defendants in an open records lawsuit filed Tuesday by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Miami Herald and CNN. The local officials claim that surveillance videos from cameras outside the school are completely exempt from sunshine laws because they would expose the district’s security system plan; are part of an active criminal investigation; and involve an active internal affairs investigation of school resource officer/BSO Deputy Scot Peterson, whom Israel notoriously threw under the bus last week.

  27. America just got its first full-time Muslim TV reporter who wears a hijab

‘It’s my America too,’ says the first Muslim television reporter in the U.S to wear a hijab.

Tahera Rahman is ushering in a new era of broadcast journalism for Americans, showing that everyone deserves to be represented.

The journalist, from Naperville, Illinois, is a news reporter for WHBF-TV, a CBS affiliate based in Rock Island which serves the Quad cities Tahera, 27, has vied for the on air position for several years and even after working at the station as a producer for two years, she was overlooked for the job.

But not losing sight of her dream of stepping in front of the camera, Tahera persisted, even when a colleague told her America wasn’t ready for a hijabi TV reporter.

Thankfully, she still applied and her reel proved to be the best out of all the applicants.

The Muslim American Women In Media group confirmed that Tahera was breaking a record being the first female reporter to wear a headscarf while working full time for a mainstream TV station.

She studied at Loyola University Chicago, a Catholic college, throughout which she wore her headscarf. ‘I knew there was no one who looked like me who rushed Greek life, but I did because I wanted to, I would show up to formals and Panhellenic events and I would be the only one who wore a headscarf, but it never stopped me, and I still had fun and I still studied abroad and I still traveled,’ she told Iowa newspaper The Des Moines Register.

After 9/11, Tahera noticed the anti-Muslim rhetoric and the shift in public discourse about Muslim people.

Just like in the U.K, she realised there’s a problem of underrepresentation in the U.S and that there’s a lack of people who look like her on mainstream platforms.

  28. MEMRI TV -Cairo University President: “Reform of Religious Discourse Is Not Enough”

President of Cairo University Mohamed Al-Khosht called for a “completely new religious discourse,” saying that “reformed discourse” was not enough and calling the notion of reform in Islamic thought “like renovating an old and crumbling building.”

All the attempts at reform, from the days of Muhammad Abduh “have yielded disappointing results,” said Al-Khosht, pointing out that “if those reforms had borne fruit, our reality would have changed” and saying that “we should approach the Quran and the Sunna directly, armed with modern sciences.”

Al-Khosht was speaking in an Al-Arabiya interview, which aired on February 4.

  29. Clinton Ally Threatens Trump’s Family

What kind of public figure tells a member of the President’s family to wear Kevlar, the material that makes bulletproof vests bulletproof? Apparently, John Podesta does, who’s part of Hillary’s inner-circle. Maybe he just used some bad word choices when President’s son-in-law to ” Kevlar on his back”. But coming from a Clinton consigliere, that sounds pretty bad.

Nblockquote>Seems like those “unnamed sources peddling second-hand hearsay with rank speculation that continue to leak inaccurate information,” came straight from 1600 Penn. Jared better start wearing his kevlar on his back. https://t.co/Aps6BEkJDd
    — John Podesta (@johnpodesta) February 27, 2018

How would Democrats respond if any Republican said the same thing? They would wring their hands and shout from the rooftops that such a political figure was inciting violence, and did not deserve the benefit of the doubt. In an era of political violence by the left, be it from James Hodgkinson who opened fire on Republican congressmen, wounding Rep. Scalise (R-La.) or from Antifa members who riot in the streets, this wouldn’t go unanswered if it happened in reverse.

  30. Another School Shooting, Another Flawed Response
Our culture’s inability to talk meaningfully about the most consequential phenomenon in history.
    February 28, 2018
    Bruce Thornton

The reactions to the Florida school shooting have been so predictable that most commentary starts with some variation of “here we go again.” The usual “solutions” to the problem are trotted out, each with its varying degrees of weakness, and none able to achieve what everybody expects––no more massacres of kids at school. But more interesting than this fossilized debate are the unspoken assumptions behind the various recommendations, and our culture’s inability to talk meaningfully about the most consequential phenomenon in history: human evil. That’s why it’s easier to ritually repeat the same failed decades-old “solutions,” or to politicize the bloodshed for partisan gain.

The left, of course, thinks “smarter” gun control is the answer. They want to ban “assault rifles,” a scare-term that confuses semiautomatic with automatic weapons, the sale of which is already strictly limited. Then they sell the bait-and-switch by highlighting sinister-looking add-ons like silencers or high-capacity magazines. But if anti-gun nuts were concerned with gun deaths rather than the relatively rare but more politically fungible multiple-victim school-shootings, they’d know that very few murders involve rifles. In 2016, murderers were 19 times more likely to use handguns than rifles. And more murders were committed with hands and feet than with rifles. Demonizers of “assault rifles” forget that they were banned from 1994 to 2004, and that the ban was ineffective, failing to stop the Columbine shooters in 1999, or even to reduce firearm killings.

  31. Yet Another Naturalized Citizen Sentenced On Terrorism Charges
Fatally flawed vetting process provided Somali-born terrorist with citizenship and U.S. passport.
    February 28, 2018
    Michael Cutler

Here we go again. Yet another newly-naturalized United States citizen has been convicted of traveling to Syria to receive terror training, fight on the side of al-Nusrah Front, an al Qaeda-linked terrorist organization, and provide material support to that terrorist organization. He was additionally convicted of lying to an FBI agent.

On January 23, 2018 the Justice Department issued a press release, Ohio Man Sentenced for Providing Material Support to Terrorists, Making False Statements to Authorities.

That “Ohio man” was Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud, a native of Somalia.

I have written about this case in two previous articles, A Terrorist and Naturalization Fraud and How DHS Ineptitude Facilitates Terrorist Operations. As I noted in the first of those two commentaries, Mohamud committed fraud when he lied on his application for his U.S. passport by claiming he intended to travel to Greece when, in reality, he traveled to Syria. Furthermore, lying on his application for U.S. citizenship also constitutes fraud. Under Title 18 U.S. Code § 1425 (Procurement of citizenship or naturalization unlawfully) the punishment for this crime carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years, when this crime is committed in conjunction with terrorism. This is a much greater penalty than he faced for lying to an FBI agent.

  32. Sanctuary City Denver Mayor Sexually Harassed Police Officer
    February 28, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

Denver’s Mayor Michael Hancock likes to have it both ways. Denver is a sanctuary city without some of the formalities. He tried to split the difference during the racist Black Lives Matter tantrums. Including the defacing of a police memorial.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and Chief of Police Robert White are standing firm against an outcry by the rank and file touched off by protesters who were allowed to throw red paint on the city’s memorial to fallen officers.

“You are responsible for the desecration of our Brothers and Sisters[‘s] memorial and there is nothing you can say or do to repair that,” said the letter. “The real officers of this department have no confidence in you. You made your decision to stand with the criminals that treat us with vile contempt and utter hatred. You sent the message to every criminal that it is [OK] to assault us and try to tear us down.”

Mayor Hancock also boycotted a meeting with President Trump over attempts to enforce the law in sanctuary cities.

  33. Oakland Mayor’s Tipoff to Illegal Aliens Endangered ICE Officers
    February 28, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

The real question is whether she’s going to be held accountable.

Federal officials said Tuesday they arrested more than 150 undocumented immigrants in a Northern California sweep aimed at countering local sanctuary laws, while suggesting Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s decision to alert the public to the secret operation may have allowed some targets to elude capture…

“Sanctuary jurisdictions like San Francisco and Oakland shield dangerous criminal aliens from federal law enforcement at the expense of public safety,” said Thomas Homan, the acting director of ICE. “Because these jurisdictions prevent ICE from arresting criminal aliens in the secure confines of a jail, they also force ICE officers to make more arrests out in the community, which poses increased risks for law enforcement and the public.”
