“Algerian security forces arrested in the past 48 hours hundreds of clandestine immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and gathered them in “temporary residence centers” in the capital.
“Around 2,500 migrants will be deported on Thursday and Friday to six countries, which are Niger, Mali, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea,” a government source told Asharq Al-Awsat.
The source, who works in the Department of Security in Algiers and is specialized in the foreign illegal migrants file, said that the gendarmerie arrested them during an overnight raid in the capital Algiers and the neighboring municipality.
A large number of children and women were among the detainees. Migrants were arrested from construction workshops and some others were in the homes of Algerian citizens.
The source added that dozens of African migrants changed their places of residence after news of the deportation of illegal migrants spread through social media. This consequently prevented their arrest.
The authorities declared that they “are determined to transfer all illegal migrants to their countries.”
“Algeria has carried out these operations against immigrants on the basis of an agreement with their governments,” the source added.
Witnesses said that some unknown assailants attacked a group of migrants using knives inside a newly constructed house in the area of Ain al-Bunyan west of the capital. Police intervened to rescue them.
The detainees were transferred to various police stations in the capital, where their fingerprints were taken and their identity cards were seized. They were then taken to “temporary centers” located in the western suburb of Algiers.
Migrants are expected to be transported to the far south of the country by buses of the Algerian Red Crescent, which oversees the deportation process.
Algeria deals with illegal African migrants from a “security mindset,” unlike the thousands of Syrian refugees.
Security officials are wary of the possibility that the African migrants may be involved in terrorist activities, which is why their fingerprints and photographs were taken before their deportation.”

Germany is greatly understating the true size of its current account surplus in order to deflect mounting global criticism, according to an exposé by German economists.
The annual surplus in ‘real’ terms – the figure that matters in trade relations – may be as much as €80bn (£70bn) higher than the sum declared by the statistics office and submitted to international bodies.
“They’re cooking the books so that the surplus does not look as if it is increasing. What they are doing is a form of ‘political smoothing’, but very few people understand this,” said Professor Heiner Flassbeck, Germany’s former state-secretary of finance and now at Hamburg university.

Anguished Germany raises anti-Semitism alarm
German leaders are increasingly alarmed about a resurgence of anti-Semitism 73 years after the Holocaust, stemming from an emboldened far right and an influx of refugees from countries hostile to Israel.

Two large protests against migration have woken up the Germans: On 20 January, at least 2,500 participants were protesting in Cottbus and last Sunday, on 28 January, there was another big protest in Kandel.
The protests started in Cottbus after Syrians attacked several Germans within a matter of days. For example a German man and a German boy were attacked with knives by Syrians. After other incidents, tensions in the town became so high that it stopped the acceptance of new refugees.
But also in Kandel people have had enough of migrant violence. In December, a 15-year-old German girl, called Mia, was brutally murdered by an Afghan refugee in a drug store. Mia was well-liked, she helped organise the local carnival every year.

Ending North Korea oil supplies would be seen as act of war, says Russia
MOSCOW (Reuters) – The delivery of oil and oil products to North Korea should not be reduced, Moscow’s ambassador to Pyongyang was cited as saying by RIA news agency on Wednesday, adding that a total end to deliveries would be interpreted by North Korea as an act of war.
The U.N. and United States have introduced a wave of sanctions aimed at curbing North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons, including by seeking to reduce its access to crude oil and refined petroleum products.
“We can’t lower deliveries any further,” Russia’s envoy to Pyongyang, Alexander Matzegora, was quoted by RIA as saying in an interview.
Quotas set by the U.N. allow for around 540,000 tonnes of crude oil a year to be delivered to North Korea from China, and over 60,000 tonnes of oil products from Russia, China and other countries, he was quoted as saying.

It’s better if you watched the SOTU this evening and aren’t relying on the media to tell you about it. Even a friendly group like Fox News is speaking about the speech in terms too politically thematic. It wasn’t a politically thematic speech.
Trump wove statements about policy in with vignettes of American life, heroism, courage, kindness, loss, and redemption – and the latter were the emphatic punctuation points. The speech was about good news, hope, and a positive outlook.
It lacked any ritual references – I don’t remember any – to “our big problems,” or “our deep divisions,” or “our profound disagreements.” Obama used to talk about those all the time. Tonight, Trump didn’t.
One group of Americans “gets” that if you focus your mind and your dialogue on problems, divisions, and disagreements, you create your own quagmire. The only way to make the quagmire recede is to stop giving all the oxygen to problems, divisions, and disagreements, as if there is perpetually some adjustment still lacking, and some hold they must have on our time and our spirits.
Another group of Americans doesn’t get that. God bless them. At tonight’s SOTU, it was the Democrats in Congress, who sat through virtually all of the speech attired in black and literally slumped over and pouting. I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anything like it.

I fully agree with thee analysis above. Watch it. It is worth it. I think I stood and clapped myself for a lot of it. It was the voice of a single man uniting a people with a set of values worth being on board with, and worth the struggle to preserve.
It was inspiring and the voice of a statesman.
There was no politics. And the losers were indeed those who wanted to force politics on it, and those Grima Wormtongue like leftists who seemed upset by the successes. Some black leftist politicians that actually seemed upset that black unemployment was at an all time low.

A terror group leader is believed to have accidentally shot himself to death in the head.
Imad al-Alami, one of the founders of Hamas – a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist organisation – died in a hospital in Gaza three weeks after the incident.

Controversial Swiss-born Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at the University of Oxford, is being held by French police investigating accusations of rape.
A judicial source confirmed to Reuters that Ramadan was taken into custody on Wednesday. His detention comes in the wake of a preliminary investigation opened last year after two women filed police complaints against him, accusing him of rape.
The main complainant against Ramadan, the grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, is former Salafist Henda Ayari, 40. She filed a complaint with French authorities in Rouen accusing Ramadan of sexually harassing her, raping her, and issuing death threats towards her.

Reclusive Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss — one of the Democrats’ biggest and most secretive donors — is currently under investigation for a 2011 sexual assault, as originally reported in a handwritten complaint by his former employee Jacqueline Long.
The current status of the investigation was confirmed by a Nov. 30, 2017 document obtained by TheDCNF in a case titled State vs. Hansjörg Wyss. The document was from the office of Fredric M. Knapp, the Morris County, N.J., prosecutor.
The document confirmed the receipt of sexual paraphernalia from Long, including a “purple vibrator.” She alleged in the complaint the device was used by Wyss as a weapon during the assault against her.

Police in Spain have recovered four tonnes of stolen oranges after pulling over two cars packed with the fruit.
The oranges were found when police in Seville became suspicious and searched the vehicles following a short chase.
Five people were arrested when they could not explain where the oranges had come from. One suspect said they had picked them up from the ground.
It was later discovered that the fruit had been stolen from a warehouse in the nearby town of Carmona.

JAKARTA: Google has pulled one of the world’s largest gay dating apps from the Indonesian version of its online store in response to government demands, Jakarta said on Wednesday (Jan 31), amid a crackdown on the LGBT community.

Women’s safety is becoming problematic in Europe’s big cities. After the alarming sexual assault statistics from Paris’ public transport, the same tendency in Berlin emerges.
According to German newspaper Bild, Berlin’s police registered almost twice as many cases of sexual assault and harassment as last year. At least 295 reports were made to the police of the German capital in 2017, almost twice the number of 2016, which was 156.
The newspaper says the trend continued this year, as there were already eleven sexual offences registered within two weeks. It gives examples of incidents from the start of the year, in which five women became victims of sexual offenses within six days. The cases differ from men exposing themselves to men touching women immorally.

MONTERREY, Nuevo Leon — State police officers found a Russian RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) during a traffic stop as part of an enforcement operation targeting street-level dealers in this border state. Authorities also seized some drugs and a handgun.
The seizure took place along the highway that connects Monterrey with Saltillo in Santa Catarina, a police report obtained by Breitbart Texas revealed. A group with the Nuevo Leon Ministerial Police had been carrying out an operation to identify street-level selling points when they spotted a convoy of three vehicles in the area. When authorities approached, the drivers sped away in an escape attempt.

OTTAWA — Long flights can be gruelling, but those travelling on official government planes have limitless alcohol to take the edge off.
Between December 2016 and December 2017, passengers aboard government aircraft consumed 401 bottles of wine, 584 cans of beer and five 250-millilitre bottles of vodka, at a total cost of $8,179. The numbers were provided in answer to a question from Conservative MP Dean Allison.
Alcohol is provided free of charge for officials on international government flights. According to the answer tabled in the House of Commons Tuesday, “the service of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages on the Airbus and 707 for official delegations on international flights has been a standard practice since the 1970s.”

In an amazing example of just how out of touch they were with the American people Tuesday, CNN prefaced the release of their very positive State of the Union reaction poll by claiming it wasn’t representative of the nation. “It’s not representative of the country overall it is a poll of people who watched the speech. Well, who watches a State of the Union address? Fans of the person giving it,” declared Political Director David Chalian.
After coming back from a commercial break host Wolf Blitzer was eager to get to CNN’s polling data and even more eager to discredit the poll as nothing special. “We’re now getting the first results of our instant poll of people who actually watched the President’s speech. David Chalian our political director is here, give us the numbers and give us the explanation that this is not necessarily a national poll,” he announced.
Chalian was quick to point out that more Republicans were probably watching than Democrats. “So it is definitely an audience that skews a little bit more towards Republicans than Democrats in the Obama years it was the reverse,” he asserted before giving the very positive results.
