Pro-Israel Zeman scores second term as Czech president
In the final days of campaigning Drahos underscored his concerns about possible Russian meddling in the campaign, saying that “for [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s regime, NATO is the biggest enemy and we are part of NATO.”
Petr Vasicek, a Prague artist, told AFP that he chose the “educated and intelligent” Drahos over Zeman who is “pro-Russian and pro-Chinese, which I don’t like at all.”
Zeman has repeatedly called on the EU to lift its sanctions on Russia over its 2014 takeover of Crimea from Ukraine.
He was also one of the few European leaders to endorse Donald Trump’s bid for the White House.
Zeman, who is known as a supporter of Israel, also has voiced support for Trump’s plan to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
He later accused EU states of being “cowards” in their response to Trump recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Hamas Fighter Drawn To Bright Light In Tunnel, Not Realizing He’s Dead (satire)
Confusion reigned in the subterranean passages that snake through and out of the Gaza Strip today after a terrorist killed in a collapsing section remained unaware of his situation because his immediate post-death experience of being drawn toward an inviting light at the end of a tunnel differed in no way from his situation a moment before.
Faqhin al-Aghal, 22, met his demise (today) Wednesday afternoon when a portion of the concrete ceiling in the tunnel in which he was training failed, resulting in several tons of rocky debris crushing him to death. The speed of the collapse and fatality was such that al-Aghal had no chance to notice it happening. Owing to the similarity between his environment and what the consciousness sees in the moments following death, the Khan Yunis refugee camp native did not realize he had perished, and his consciousness continued to move along the remaining section of tunnel toward an illuminated target.
“It might take him a few more moments for reality to hit him,” predicted one observer. “Soon he’ll notice the sense of detachment, perhaps even bliss, that often accompanies this experience, and that will give him pause. He will stop, look around, and realize he’s not embodied. He might even notice the presence of ancestors, deceased loved ones, or others clearly out of place in a tunnel intended for use in combat against Israel, and then it will hit him, so to speak.”
“Of course there’s also the chance that the realization will involve anxiety and fear, rather than bliss,” remarked another. “Up to one fifth of dead or dying people experience that. There’s no telling until it happens.”

At least three people were killed late Friday when Boko Haram attacked the Hyambula village in northeast Adamawa state, police and a community leader told AFP after the latest in a spate of terrorist raids targeting civilians.
“There was an attack at Hyambula last night. Three people were killed and three others kidnapped,” Adamawa state police spokesman Othman Abu Bakr said, blaming Boko Haram for the attack.
The suspected terrorists had shot dead one man, before a suicide bomber blew himself up among residents gathered at the scene, killing two and leaving five injured.
“They shot a resident who was resting under a tree outside his house,” Community leader Maina Ularamu said.
“When residents had gathered around him a suicide bomber hiding in the tree jumped off and detonated his explosives among the crowd.”
Adamawa was said to have been cleared of Boko Haram in late 2015.
But attacks have continued in the north of the state, particularly around Madagali, which borders Borno state and the militants’ Sambisa Forest stronghold.
In separate clashes, at least three people were killed in central Plateau state when Fulani herders attacked Jebu-Bassa, a farming village of Irigwe tribesmen.
“Three persons were killed and eight injured in renewed hostilities in Jebu-Bassa,” Plateau state police spokesman Tyopev Terna said, saying herdsmen were suspected of the killings on Thursday night.
A youth leader of the Muslim ethnic Hausa Rafin Bauna community said the attack may have been in reprisal for recent attacks on Fulani and Hausa communities by Irigwe militia which left one dead and several homes burnt.

Pakistan has maintained that the only viable solution to the Afghanistan conflict lies in a politically negotiated, Afghan-owned and Afghan led peace process.
“The military approach has been tried for over sixteen years and has failed to render the desired results. It has only increased the sufferings of the Afghan people and enhanced their resentment against the foreign forces on their land,” Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said during the last weekly briefing.
The peace deal signed between the Afghan government and Hizb-e-Islami could serve as a model for future talks with other insurgent groups, including the Taliban, he added…”

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack near the Marshal Fahim military academy in the western outskirts of the capital, Kabul, according to the militant group’s Amaq news agency.
It came two days after an ambulance bomb in the center of the city killed more than 100 people and just over a week after another attack on the Hotel Intercontinental, also in Kabul, killed more than 20.
Both of those attacks were claimed by the Taliban.
Ministry of Defence officials said the five militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles attacked the outpost near the well-defended academy just before dawn.
Two of the attackers blew themselves up, two were killed in fighting and one was captured, the ministry said in a statement announcing that the fighting was over. Five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded, it said.
“The Afghan National Army is the country’s defence force and makes sacrifices for the security and well-being of the people,” the ministry said.
While militants claiming allegiance to Islamic State operate in mountains in the eastern province of Nangarhar, little is known about the group and many analysts question whether they are solely responsible for the attacks they have claimed in Kabul and elsewhere.
The attack came as the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, was due to visit Kabul.

The same approach, after all, prompted the wholesale flight of the Iraqi army as IS forces swept out of Syria and across swathes of Iraq a few years ago.
The challenge for the west, primarily America, is reversing a losing battle.
Afghanistan has proven itself incapable of being stabilised and yet the price of defeat and retreat for the US and its allies is too great.”

The Next Time You Order Room Service, It May Come by Robot
Hotels around the country are introducing robots to handle repetitive tasks like room service deliveries, entertaining guests, and even giving directions.
Hotels across the country are rushing to introduce robots with the promise of enhancing the guest experience and increasing efficiency. The automated companions can do everything from make and pick up deliveries to help guests find their way around.
Aloft Cupertino in the Silicon Valley (rates from $150) was the first hotel in the United States to debut Savioke’s Relay robot in 2014. The three foot tall autonomous robot, nicknamed Botlr, weighs 90 pounds and makes deliveries throughout the hotel using multiple sensors, 3D cameras and Wi-Fi to operate the elevators. Marriott has since begun mobile robot service at four other Aloft properties.
“Botlr’s most popular guest deliveries are forgotten toiletry items, bottled water, microwave popcorn and coloring books for kids — all complimentary, of course,” said Andy Evers, Aloft Cupertino’s general manager.

Footage showing Emmanuel Macron giving autographs to dozens of kids in the city of Clermond-Ferrand swept French media on January 26 – and it was not Macron’s eagerness to talk to the children that made the headlines.
While President Macron, surrounded by excited children, was trying to give autographs, he found himself in a difficult situation, as he had no pad that would make writing easier. The video shows him asking one of his bodyguards for help, with the latter giving the president a writing case made of Kevlar fiber, which can be used to protect Macron from bullets.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican officials said on Sunday the government was set to unleash a new wave of troops to crack down on criminal groups in regions where a surge in violence led to more than 25,000 murders last year.
National Security Commissioner Renato Sales said federal police troops will work with local officials to round up known major criminals and bolster investigations.
The aim was “to recover peace and calm for all Mexicans,” he said. He did not provide details on the number of federal police to be deployed.
More than 25,000 murders were recorded last year as rival drug gangs increasingly splintered into smaller, more blood-thirsty groups after more than a decade of a military-led campaign to battle the cartels.
Violence is a central issue ahead of the presidential election in July. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party is trailing in third place in recent polls.

Winter maneuvers are less extensive than in previous years; restrictions on fuel imports are seen as having an effect
SEOUL—North Korea’s armed forces have scaled back their annual winter military exercises this year, U.S. officials said, a development they believe reflects growing pressure from international sanctions on the isolated nation’s economy and its military preparedness.
The North Korean maneuvers, which typically run from December through March, were slow in getting started and are less extensive than usual, according to American officials familiar with intelligence reports and experts outside the government.
One possibility is that restrictions on shipments of oil and refined petroleum products to North Korea imposed by the United Nations have led the country, which has one of the world’s largest standing armies, to conserve fuel by cutting back on ground and air training exercises.
“Where this will have an effect is on ground-force readiness,” said Joseph S. Bermudez Jr. , a military analyst for 38 North, a website on North Korean affairs run by Johns Hopkins University’s U.S.-Korea Institute. “Military units have to train to maintain their proficiency.”

House Intelligence Committee to Vote on Releasing Contested FISA Abuse Memo
The House Intelligence Committee is preparing for its first vote to release a highly-anticipated memo, which Republicans say reveals political bias in the FBI.
The committee will meet in the capitol Monday to vote on the so-called FISA abuse memo despite objections by the FBI and DOJ.
Republicans hold a 13-to-nine advantage on the committee, meaning any vote along party lines will likely result in the document’s release.
At that point, the committee will wait for a decision by the president on whether he supports the decision.
President Trump has made it clear he supports the release of the memo, which means it could be made public very quickly.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump Junior is betting money that Democrats will leak a response to the highly anticipated GOP memo before the it is released.
On Sunday, the president’s eldest son bet $100 that Democrat Congressman Adam Schiff would leak his version of the memo before it is released by the House Intelligence Committee.
Trump Junior has been a driving force behind the campaign to release a classified memo, which reportedly shows how FBI officials concealed the use of political opposition research in their application to surveil members of the Trump campaign.

Iran cites change in U.S. navy behavior in Gulf
LONDON (Reuters) – An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said on Monday that U.S. vessels patrolling the Gulf had changed behavior and now abided by international regulations.
Rear Admiral Ali Ozmaei’s remarks cited by Tasnim news agency followed last week’s comments by U.S. military officials that the Iranian military had halted routine “harassment” of U.S. naval vessels in the Gulf.
Each state accuses the other of having flouted international regulations in the sea area, which is a major trade route for oil.
In recent years, there have been periodic confrontations between the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and U.S. military in the Gulf.
“We see that Americans behavior has changed. They pay more attention to international regulations and avoid approaching Iran’s territorial waters,” Ozmaei, the Guards’ fifth naval district commander, said.
In the first such confrontation since President Donald Trump took office, a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots when an Iranian vessel approached to within 450 feet (140 meters) last July.
The following month an unarmed Iranian drone came within 100 feet (30 meters) of a U.S. Navy warplane as it prepared to land on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf.
During the presidential campaign last September, Trump said any Iranian vessel that harassed the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be “shot out of the water”.

Philippine police return to war on drugs, cannot promise to avoid bloodshed
MANILA (Reuters) – Police in the Philippines on Monday resumed President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, making visits to the homes of users and dealers to convince them to surrender, but the national police chief said he could not promise a bloodless campaign.
The announcement came as the justice department filed its first criminal case against police officers in the battle against drugs, bolstering human rights activists’ accusations of fabricated accounts of shoot-outs with drug suspects.
The program of visits, known as “Oplan Tokhang”, made a comeback with an assurance from police chief Ronaldo dela Rosa that it should be free of violence if offenders agreed to go quietly and did not resist.
But he could not promise a “foolproof anti-drug campaign that would be bloodless”, Dela Rosa added, as the police were “not dealing with people who are in their proper state of mind”.
