  6. Brigitte Bardot slams #MeToo ‘publicity-seeking’ actresses

    French film legend Brigitte Bardot attacked the #MeToo movement Wednesday, claiming that actresses who complain of sexual harassment were just looking for publicity.

    “The vast majority are being hypocritical and ridiculous,” she told the French magazine Paris Match.

    “Lots of actresses try to play the tease with producers to get a role. And then, so we will talk about them, they say they were harassed,” declared the 83-year-old Bardot.

    “I was never the victim of sexual harassment. And I found it charming when men told me that I was beautiful or I had a nice little backside,” said the actress, who became a sex symbol overnight for “And God Created Woman” in 1956.

    Her comments come a week after fellow French star Catherine Deneuve sparked a worldwide feminist backlash by defending men’s right to “hit on” women.

    She signed an open letter by 100 prominent women that claimed that #MeToo had become a puritanical “witch-hunt” which threatened sexual freedom.

    It also inferred that women fondled on public transport should just get over it.

    But Deneuve later distanced herself from some of the other signatories after one claimed that women can orgasm during rape.

    The 74-year-old went on to apologise to victims of sexual assault, saying there was “nothing good” about harassment.

    Bardot, who ended her film career in 1973 so she could dedicate herself to her animal rights charity, has a long history of provoking feminists.

    Yet she admitted to the magazine that she has not digested what happened to her when she was at the height of her fame in the 1960s, and her love life made international headlines.

    “I still find it difficult to understand what happened to me,” she said. “That uncontrollable time made me very distrustful of the human race.”

    Bardot said she “has almost no contact these days with the entertainment industry” other than phone calls from her old friends like veteran actor Alain Delon.

    Instead she looks after her six cats, nine dogs and some 50 other animals at her farm and animal sanctuary near the French Riviera resort of Saint Tropez.

    She said that when she is gone she wants to be known as the “animals’ fairy godmother”.

    A supporter of the far-right National Front, Bardot said she prefers the late pope John Paul II to Pope Francis and prays to the Virgin Mary, which she calls “my little Virgin”.

    But she said that if she was reincarnated she would be like to be a “mustang, that wild and free horse of the American West”.

    “A Moroccan-born trainee lawyer was ejected from an Emilia-Romagna regional administrative court (TAR) hearing because she was wearing the Muslim veil Wednesday. Twenty-five-year-old Asmae Belfakir was asked by the judge either to remove the hijab or leave the courtroom. Belkafir, the legal representative of Bologna’s Islamic community, chose to leave.

    A note pinned up outside the room said “anyone who takes part in or attends the hearing cannot carry weapons or sticks and must have an uncovered head and keep silent.” The Bologna Islamic community said “it is urgent that the competent authorities clear up this case”.

    Community coordinator Yassine Lafram said “there are no laws banning the veil in a courtroom” and said the judge had voiced an “arbitrary position”.

    The organisation of young Italian lawyers (AIGA) said the judge’s action had been “inconceivable” and “against constitutional principles”.

    It voiced solidarity with the young trainee.

    The leftwing Free and Equal (LeU) party urged the judiciary’s self-governing body, the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), to overrule the judge, saying “freedom to express one’s religion should be upheld”.

    But Galeazzo Bignami of Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party said those who criticised the judge “evidently don’t know Article 129 of the code of civil procedure which lays down that those who take part in hearings must have their heads uncovered”. The Council of State, Italy’s highest administrative court, said it would ask the TAR judge to explain why he ejected the trainee. Belkafir, the trainee who was ejected, has a degree in law from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, with a thesis on women’s bodies and Islamic law.

        Modern Western military powers would do well to review this entire chapter of WWII as an example of, “how to win a war”. If there is one lesson that Islam will (not “might”) teach the West, it is to forever put aside being so titty-fingered about “collateral damage” (i.e., civilian casualties). Not that civilian fatalities by themselves are any sort of worthy goal, but neither should they be an overriding factor when selecting options.

        After all, the Law of Reciprocity™ demands recognition of how Islam has ZERO compunction as to civilian deaths (regardless of quantity—which forever remains one of its most damning traits). Ergo, why should Muslim casualties, in whatever quantity, create any overwhelming sense of reluctance in Western military planners?

        • I think it was Ballintine that had a line of WWII books, mainly Brit remembrances of their actions in WWII, it gave an excellent look into how to buy time with limited resources and men.

        • I can also recommend the two volumn autobiography of John Masters, “Bugles and a Tiger” and “The Road Past Mandalay”. The first is his experiences in the prewar British Army India (Gurkha regiment) and the latter is his experience in WWII mainly the CBI theater of operations.

          The only bad books in that series were the ones written by American liberals who served in the US Army. God what Alpha Hotels.

    HONG KONG — The pace of growth in China’s economy accelerated last year for the first time in seven years as exports, construction and consumer spending all climbed strongly.

    At least, that’s what the government says.

    In reality, the pace of growth in China’s economy is anybody’s guess. Various signals suggest China’s growth did speed up last year, which could give the government the room it needs to tackle an accumulation of serious financial, environmental and social problems this year.

    But measuring the size and health of the world’s second-largest economy can be difficult at best. Its official figures have become implausibly smooth and steady, even as other countries post results with plenty of peaks and valleys. Officials in far-flung regions are admitting their numbers are wrong. And outside experts crunching the data have come up with different — and usually weaker — results.

    • The things to remember are 1) that communist nations always lie about how their economy is doing, 2) The Soviet Union was reporting strong growth right up to the point that it collapsed. 3) The social unrest is probably much higher then we have been hearing.

      All of the above means a China that is much weaker then they want us to know, this means they will probably not interfere when we are forced to move on North Korea. It also means that their building of artificial Islands and arming them to claim the mineral resources is a desperation move. They need the mineral resources to try and provide enough services to calm down the social unrest. The Country areas (for the most part very poor Third World Country areas) feel like they have been short changed in the economic boom and so far everything that the CCP has tried has made the matter worse.

      China is headed for the same type of economic crash that destroyed the Soviet Union, the USSR crashed trying to keep up with the US defense spending. China is going to crash because of its attempt to become the new Super Power.

      Fasten your seat belt, the world is in for a very rough ride over the next couple of decades.

    Cape Town may become the first large city in the world to run out of water, as officials warn there are fewer than 90 days left before the supply runs dry.

    The city’s mayor Patricia De Lille said residents had until 22 April until “day zero”, when authorities have estimated the water supply will be finished if residents do not scale back their usage.

    A friend recently sent me a photograph that tells a powerful story about the situation Venezuelans find themselves in now. It’s not a very good picture, really, just a blurry cellphone shot of trash: some wrapping material, an old CD — the detritus left behind after a store was looted last week in San Felix, a city in the country’s southeast.

    And yet I can’t stop thinking about it, because strewn about in the trash are at least a dozen 20-bolivar bills, small-denomination currency now so worthless even looters didn’t think it was worth their time to stop and pick them up.

    The photo stopped me dead in my tracks. In theory, according to the “official” exchange rate, which long ago lost even a hint of connection with reality, each of those bills is worth $2. In fact, as Venezuela sinks deeper and deeper into the first hyperinflation the Western Hemisphere has seen in a generation, bolivar banknotes have come to be worth basically nothing: Each bill is worth about $0.0001 at the current exchange rate, meaning you need to have 100 of them to equal one penny.

    A report released by the Defense Department called the “Nuclear Posture Review” recommends the U.S. build new nuclear weapons.

    This comes as emerging threats in North Korea and Iran pose serious security risks, as well as China and Russia building up their nuclear arsenals.

    “We have to recognize that that threat is growing, and if North Korea does not choose the pathway of engagement, discussion, and negotiation then they themselves will trigger an option,” Secretary of State Tillerson said in Vancouver, Canada on Tuesday.

    Though the Nuclear Posture Review is a preliminary report meant to give recommendations, it does signal a shift in policy regarding nuclear weapons.

    The U.S. has not conducted a nuclear weapons test since 1992, and has been working to decrease its nuclear arsenal for decades.

    The Defense Department recommends the building of two new types of sea-based nuclear weapons, including a nuclear tipped cruise missile, and a low-yield trident missile.

      It is crucial to cite North Korea as a principal driver of America’s move towards overhauling its nuclear arsenal. Aside from having the entire non-Chinese East Asian quadrant (i.e., Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) all go nuclear, there can be no stronger signal to Communist China (and by extension, to Russia) that their enduring support for North Korea has serious consequences.

      At the very least, let’s see if Red China can endure the economic consequences (as Soviet Russia was entirely unable to do) of engaging in a high-level arms race with America. These Commie bastards (Russia included) already are on the economic ropes. It is difficult to imagine a more fitting reward for their covert support of North Korea than giving them a not-so-gentle multi-billion dollar nudge onto the treadmill of an extended nuclear arms race (the Mainland, especially).

      I am reluctant to see the USA spend countless more billions on expanding its nuclear arsenal. All the same, watching Beijing cough up gobbets of blood as its corrupt Mandarins desperately bail out their flagging economy while attempting to keep pace with America’s unrivaled skill at build this world’s most sophisticated nuclear weapons would, at the very least, have megatons (as it were) of entertainment value.

      One way or the other, Beijing (and Russia) will pay the piper for enabling North Korea. Perhaps, at whatever time in the future, America also will learn to thank its lucky fricking stars that today’s Oval Office is occupied by something more than its previous, professional chair-warmer.

  24. China: Canada, U.S. Meeting on North Korea Showed ‘Cold War’ Mentality

    China blasts the U.S. and Canada for holding a meeting with U.N. leaders about the North Korea threat.

    A spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry said his country did not send a delegation to the meeting because the talks would not resolve the North Korea issue.

    He said the meeting displayed a “Cold War” mentality, and would only cause international divisions and damage efforts to stabilize the region.

    “..convening a meeting without key participants of the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula actually can’t push forward a proper settlement to the issue, said Lu Kang, a spokesman for China’s foreign Ministry. “The main channel to handle and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula should still be the framework of six-party talks and the United Nations Security Council.”

    The spokesman said the meeting lacked legitimacy.

    Secretary of State Rex Tillerson led Tuesday’s gathering and agreed with other U.N. leaders that tougher sanctions on North Korea may be needed.

    MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian police searched the campaign headquarters of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in St Petersburg on Thursday ahead of a presidential election on March 18, a video feed streamed live to the Internet by Navalny’s supporters showed.

    The feed showed police checking campaigners’ passports. Russia’s central election commission declined to register Navalny as a candidate in the election, citing what Navalny said was a trumped up criminal conviction.

    Thursday’s police search took place on the same day as President Vladimir Putin, who polls show is on track to be comfortably re-elected, was visiting St Petersburg.

  26. As Turkey preps for move against U.S.-backed Kurds, NATO is not the major concern

    Western media are suggesting that a Turkish military initiative in northwestern Syria, which would have U.S.-backed Kurds as its target, would present an alliance problem for NATO. But that’s a misreading of the situation.

    In fact, a popular Arab reading of the situation – that the Turkish move would put Ankara cross-ways with Russia – may also be a misreading. Russia and her client Bashar al-Assad don’t necessarily prefer the Kurds having control of the territory in question, as opposed to the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army.

    Ultimately, the Kurds are probably up a creek in this particular area. But to see why, we need to look at the map.

    To begin with, Turkey’s urgency about making the move now, as opposed to months ago, arises officially from a newly announced U.S. plan to train and back a force of 30,000 Syrian Kurds in northeastern Syria, to act as a bulwark against a resurgence of ISIS in Syria’s eastern provinces, where the “Islamic State” had its core territory from late 2012 on.

    Since early 2017, ISIS has been ejected from the key cities of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, and is now isolated to a pair of pockets in eastern Syria, seen in gray on the first map.

    “Syria said on Thursday its air defense would shoot down any Turkish jets that carry out attacks within Syria, a stark warning as tensions soar over apparent preparations by the Turkish military to invade a northern Syrian Kurdish enclave.

    From Damascus, Deputy Foreign Minister Faysal Mekdad said a military incursion into Syria’s Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin would be “no picnic” for Turkey.

    Any such operation would be considered an “aggressive act,” Mekdad said.

    The escalation comes after the United States disclosed plans to form a 30,000-strong border force in Syria led by the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces in the wake of the victory over the Islamic State group. Turkey reacted angrily to the announcement.

    Turkey regards the Syrian Kurdish militia that controls Afrin and other areas along its frontier as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency within its borders and wants to prevent the establishment of a Kurdish corridor along the frontier.

    The U.S. has developed close ties with the Kurdish militia over the shared fight against IS and keeps bases in northeast Syria with the Kurds. But it is not believed to maintain any American forces in Afrin, an enclave that is not linked to the bulk of Kurdish-run territory in Syria.

    Earlier on Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called on the U.S. to abandon ideas of a Syrian Kurdish border force, saying that Washington has been inconsistent in its statements about its plans.

    On Wednesday, the Czech Chamber of Deputies asked their parliament to vote on the EU’s plans to force member states to accept a certain number of migrants.

    The chamber’s opposition against the EU’s migrant quota proposal and its related financial sanctions, was supported by 163 of the 165 deputies that were present.

  49. Italy: Migrants forced to leave camp near Ventimiglia

    Migrants camped by a railway bridge along Roja river in Ventimiglia were forced to leave the area on Thursday, following an order by local authorities.

    Reportedly, the area was ordered to be cleaned “for reasons of public safety” because of the danger of flooding in case of heavy rainfall.

    INTERSOS NGO member Daniela Zitarosa said: “we cannot consider this to be a camp because it has no services at all. It’s an unconventional camp under open skies. The situation changes widely from week to week. Unfortunately now there are many families with many children. There are also many unaccompanied women.”

    Cultural mediators advised migrants to move to Roja Park, managed by the Red Cross, which already hosts around 300 people.

    According to local media, there were around 150-200 people living by the railway bridge.
