  3. Canada’s Bombardier to finance Iran’s commercial plane order

TEHRAN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — Canadian planemaker Bombardier is ready to finance 80 percent of Iran’s order to buy 10 commercial aircrafts, Financial Tribune daily reported on Tuesday.

Bombardier has obtained the license from the U.S. Treasury’s Office for Foreign Assets Control to sell 10 brand-new CRJ-900 NextGen regional jets to Iran and is ready to finance 80 percent of the order, the CEO and Chairman of Qeshm Investment and Development Company told the daily.

“The remaining 20 percent would be funded by Iran’s Qeshm Free Area,” Reza Baqerinejad said without providing further details about the total value of the contract.

The planemaker has submitted a draft contract to Iran’s Qeshm Free Area Organization for the review, Baqerinejad said, adding that his company will review the draft to finalize the deal.

The final contract will be officially unveiled within a month, Baqerinejad was quoted as saying.

Deliveries are expected to begin ten months after the deal is unveiled, Baqerinejad said. “Bombardier is expected to deliver two planes every three months,” he added.

The contract marks Bombardier’s first foray into the Iranian market as no Iranian airline has ever operated planes manufactured by the Canadian company.

The order is part of the Iran’s Qeshm Free Area Organization plan to launch a new airline called Fly Qeshm to promote tourism in the southern Qeshm Island.

Boeing, Airbus and ATR have been given the go-ahead with their contracts with Iran Air. The flag carrier has so far received 11 planes, 3 Airbus jets in addition to 8 ATR turboprops.

Iran’s Deal With Bombardier Nears Conclusion

[…]The contract makes Bombardier the fourth planemaker that has granted permission from the US Treasury to sell aircraft to Iranian airlines, at a time when US President Donald Trump’s hostile approach toward the 2016 nuclear agreement has been raising concerns about the fate of aircraft orders.

Boeing, Airbus and ATR have been given the go-ahead with their contracts with Iran Air. The flag carrier has so far received 11 planes, 3 Airbus jets in addition to 8 ATR turboprops.

Meanwhile, Iran Aseman Airlines’ contract with Boeing to purchase 30+30 Boeing 737max jets is still pending OFAC licenses.

Iran to buy 10 passenger planes from Canada

[…]Once the deal is signed, the plane-maker will hand over 10 planes to Iran in a two aircraft per each three months schedule, he said.

The purchased planes will join to the fleet of a new airline, namely “Fly Qeshm”, which will be launch by Qeshm Free Zone Organization, the official added.

It was earlier announced that the airline will start operation as of February 2018.

Iran was negotiating to purchase 25 aircrafts from Canada, but due to financial resources limitations the deal will be limited to 10 aircrafts for the time being.

Ottawa to Finance Iran’s Bombardier Order

Canada will provide $100 million in finance for a deal between Montreal-based multinational aerospace and transportation company, Bombardier Inc., and Iran’s Qeshm Free Zone Organization for purchasing 10 passenger planes, the FTZ’s chief executive, Hamidreza Momeni, has said.

The free zone is planning to launch a new airline called Fly Qeshm.

“Our talks with Canada’s Bombardier are almost final,” he was quoted as saying by Iran’s Tinn News on Tuesday.

Momeni said the $100-million finance will cover 80% of the deal, which entails the supply of the 104-seat planes.

“We are doing our best to receive these planes before the end of the current year (March 20, 2018),” he said.

He was quoted earlier as saying by Iran newspaper that the FTZ will receive permits to launch the new airline by July 29, adding that the airline will start operation as of February 11, 2018.

The organization’s talks with Bombardier to purchase passenger planes were publicized for the first time in April 2016, when Pierre Beaudoin, the executive chairman of Bombardier, led a delegation to Iran.

    • Does this explain Trudeau’s behavior? Did he curry favouritism from Iran to bolster Bombardier sales? What is his reward if true?

      • The answer to you first two questions, probably.

The Third he will say increased employment and more money into the Canadian economy. Of course this all depends on Canada getting all of the money from the sale, with Iran you never know.

“Pakistani police say a senior officer known for leading raids on militant hideouts escaped assassination when a suicide bomber riding on a motorcycle blew himself up near his vehicle in the port city of Karachi.

The police say the officer, Rao Anwar, was unhurt in the attack, which took place late on Tuesday. The bomber had an unknown number of accomplices who opened fire at Anwar’s car after the explosion. His guards returned fire, killing two of the gunmen.

The police have mounted a hunt for the rest of the attackers.

On Wednesday, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Mohammad Khurasani claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban have been waging a war on the Pakistani government for years, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people over the last decade.”

“Members of a small Iraqi community of vintage car aficionados are hoping to rekindle their passion now that the war against the Islamic State group is over.

For many, the cars remind them of happier times in Iraq, before decades of war and chaos.

The vintage cars date back to the period between the discovery of oil in the 1920s and the booming 1970s, when Iraq was awash in petroleum wealth and boasted some of the finest roads in the region.

Much of that infrastructure was destroyed in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and the 1990 Gulf War. In the chaotic years after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, many collectors kept their cars hidden or locked up.

Now, as the violence subsides, some feel more comfortable showing off their treasures.”

Amazon wants to put a camera and microphone in your bedroom with the UK launch of its latest Echo home device.

The camera on the £119.99 ($129) Echo Spot, which doubles up as a ‘smart alarm’, will probably be facing directly at the user’s bed.

The device, which is already available in the US has such sophisticated microphones it can hear people talking from across the room – even if music is playing.

However, there remain privacy concerns over using such a device in the home.

Amazon devices have previously activated when they’re not wanted meaning this small device could turn into a potential spy.

  8. $260 billion ‘cryptocalypse’ as cryptos plunge 30 per cent amid fresh China, South Korea fears

BITCOIN, ethereum, ripple and other virtual currencies have been smashed overnight in a bloodbath of Titanic proportions.

THE cryptocurrency market has lost $US206 billion overnight in what traders are describing as a “cryptocalypse”, with bitcoin heading back towards its $US10,000 milestone first reached last November.

But it was smaller currencies including ripple, ethereum and bitcoin cash that were the hardest hit in the latest sell-off, which was sparked by fresh fears of a crackdown on virtual currencies by governments in South Korea and China.

At the time of writing, ripple was down nearly 50 per cent on the previous day, ethereum had lost nearly 34 per cent of its value, bitcoin cash was down nearly 37 per cent and bitcoin was down 27 per cent to just under $US10,200.

The market capitalisation of more than 1300 cryptocurrencies has dropped by around 30 per cent over the past 24 hours, down from $US702 billion to $US496 billion, according to Coinmarketcap.

  9. Barred from election, Navalny vows to fight ’emperor’ Putin

The Kremlin’s top critic Alexei Navalny has slammed Russia’s March presidential election, in which he is barred from running, as a sham meant to “re-appoint” Vladimir Putin on his way to becoming “emperor for life”.

With two months to go before Russians vote in polls that are all but guaranteed to hand Putin a historic fourth term, the 41-year-old opposition leader and anti-corruption campaigner spoke to AFP Tuesday in his campaign headquarters.

“This is not an election and my role will consist of explaining to people that this procedure, which they call an election, in fact is only held to re-appoint Putin,” he said.

“We will prove this and convince people that it’s impossible to recognise either these polls or this regime.”

Navalny last year mounted a national campaign, meeting thousands of people in cities across Russia, but in December the Central Election Commission said he could not take part due to a controversial embezzlement conviction which the opposition leader calls fabricated.

He is now ready to channel the force of his campaign into persuading Russian

When Juan Granda ventured into Peru’s Amazon rainforest to score another illicit load of gold, he boasted that he felt like legendary Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

“I’m like Pablo coming … to get the coke,” he told two co-workers in a text message in 2014.

A 36-year-old Florida State University graduate who once sold subprime loans, Granda was no cartel kingpin. But his offhand comparison was apt: Gold has become the secret ingredient in the criminal alchemy of Latin American narco-traffickers who make billions turning cocaine into clean cash by exporting the metal to Miami.

The previous year, Granda’s employer, NTR Metals, a South Florida precious-metals trading company, had bought nearly $1 billion worth of Peruvian gold supplied by narcos — and Granda and NTR needed more.

The Department of Defense is working with the FDA to speed up the approval process for military medical devices.

The Pentagon and FDA announced new procedures on Tuesday aimed at accelerating the production and release of medical devices and drugs needed on the battlefield.

A bill Congress passed last year will allow the DOD to prioritize certain products for FDA approval after a failed push to give the Pentagon power to approve products for battlefield use.

This comes after the DOD accused the FDA of slowing down the approval process of certain treatments that could be used to save troops injured in combat.

  14. Nations to consider more North Korea sanctions, U.S. warns on military option

VANCOUVER (Reuters) – Twenty nations agreed on Tuesday to consider tougher sanctions to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Pyongyang it could trigger a military response if it did not choose negotiations.

A U.S.-hosted meeting of countries that backed South Korea during the 1950-53 Korea War also vowed to support renewed dialogue between the two Koreas “in hopes that it leads to sustained easing of tensions” and agreed that a diplomatic solution to the crisis was both essential and possible.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has refused to give up development of nuclear missiles capable of hitting the United States in spite of increasingly severe U.N. sanctions, raising fears of a new war on the Korean peninsula.

The United States and Canada co-hosted the day-long meeting in Vancouver to discuss ways to increase pressure on Kim.

U.S. officials have reported a debate within the Trump administration over whether to give more active consideration to military options, such as a pre-emptive strike on a North Korean nuclear or missile site.

  15. Myanmar police shoot dead seven protesters in troubled Rakhine

YANGON (Reuters) – Myanmar police shot dead seven demonstrators, while 12 were injured in troubled Rakhine State, after a local gathering celebrating an ancient Buddhist Arakan kingdom turned violent.

The demonstrators gathered late on Tuesday in Mrauk U township in the northern part of Rakhine to mark the end of the Arakan kingdom, the secretary of the Rakhine state government, Tin Maung Swe, told Reuters.

The violent demonstration underscores the challenges facing Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a country where dozens of ethnic groups have been clamoring for autonomy since independence from Britain in 1947.

Some 4,000 people surrounded a government building after the annual ceremony marking the demise of the Arakan kingdom over 200 years ago, Tin Maung Swe said. Organizers did not seek approval from local authorities for the gathering, he said.

“The police used rubber bullets initially but the crowd didn’t leave. Finally the security members had to shoot. The conflict happened when some people tried to seize guns from the police,” he said.

Tun Ther Sein, regional MP from Mrauk U, said some of the critically injured protesters were taken to the state capital of Sittwe, a three-hour drive south of the ancient town studded with Buddhist temples.

  16. As Catalan parliament meets, some call for fugitive ex-leader to rule by Skype

BARCELONA (Reuters) – Catalonia’s parliament met on Wednesday in a first step toward forming a new government dominated by the question of whether sacked former leader Carles Puigdemont can return as president and continue his push for independence from Spain.

Puigdemont’s supporters have suggested the former journalist could rule the wealthy region via video link from self-imposed exile in Brussels, to where he fled in October to avoid arrest for charges including sedition and treason.

The Spanish government had imposed direct rule on the region, whose economy is bigger than that of Portugal, after the previous Catalan administration led by Puigdemont made a unilateral declaration of independence.

However, a regional election in December returned a slim majority to secessionist parties in terms of seats.

In a sign of strength for the parties seeking a split from Spain, Catalan lawmakers on Wednesday elected pro-independence politician Roger Torrent as speaker of the regional parliament.

  17. 10 YEAR OLD TRANSGENDER BOY IS STARTING A DATING WEBSITE FOR TRANS CHILDREN –

Desmond Napoles, aka “Desmond is Amazing,” is launching the new website that aims to “encourage” kids to switch genders in an “online drag club.”
The “Haus of Amazing” site will be a “no-parent zone” designed to invite “gender-fluid,” and “trans-curious” minors into an “encouraging and safe online community for drag kids to connect with each other.

According to a promotional flyer for the new site, it has been “established exclusively for kids who are doing amazing drag.”

The site’s admin will approve all applicants manually and block access from parents or children who sign up using their “offensive” born gender to ensure the “drag kids” feel “safe to express themselves.”

Desmond Napoles has been dressing in drag since he was a toddler after his mother declared him “gender neutral” as a baby, a Daily Mail report said.

  18. Question of the Day: How much whiteness is ‘appropriate’?
By Howard Portnoy January 17, 2018

Answers to this and related questions are provided in a course being offered this semester at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. The school made headlines when it canceled a concert back in 2013 because the band selected to perform was deemed “not black enough.” Apparently, appropriateness in shades of skin coloration looms large in the minds of the faculty and students at Hampshire.

The course, titled “White Supremacy and Appropriate Whiteness in the Age of Trump,” will be taught by visiting Women’s Study Assistant Professor Loretta Ross, co-founder and national coordinator from 2005 to 2012 of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.

Ross’s bio further notes she “is an expert on women’s issues, hate groups, racism and intolerance, human rights, and violence against women. Her work focuses on the intersectionality of social justice issues and how this affects social change and service delivery in all movements.”

Ross is indeed an expert on hate and intolerance. Per Campus Reform, after Trump’s inauguration she offered up this comment in a tweet that linked to an article at The Root:

    • Tech company founder says Middle America too ‘violent, stupid and racist’ for new jobs
By LU Staff January 16, 2018

One Silicon Valley executive had a few choice words to describe Americans living in the heart of the nation, and they were not flattering.

Melinda Byerley, MBA and founder of Timeshare CMO, a Silicon Valley-based tech start-up, tweeted out Saturday afternoon her recipe for what middle America could do to “get more jobs in their area.”

Byerley says that the first thing those in middle America need to realize is that “no educated person wants to live in a sh*thole with stupid people.” Particularly, in a “sh*thole” filled with people who are “violent, racist, and/or misogynistic.” In Byerley’s opinion, “big corporations,” do not consider moving to the heart of America because “those towns have nothing going for them.”

The towns have “no infrastructure, just a few bars and a terrible school system.”

The MBA claims that “we,” the educated people, like herself, “would like to live a more rural lifestyle,” but “won’t sacrifice tolerance or diversity to do so.” Especially, these folks do not want to live in “states where the majority of residents are voting for things against their own interests,” solely, because these voters “don’t want brown people to thrive.”

  20. House report: Awans logged on as Dem House Members, stored data offsite, stole server
By LU Staff January 16, 2018

House investigators concluded that Democratic IT aides made unauthorized access to congressional servers in 2016, allegedly accessing the data of members for whom they did not work, logging in as members of Congress themselves, and covering their tracks, according to a presentation summarizing the findings of a four-month internal probe.

Their behavior mirrored a “classic method for insiders to exfiltrate data from an organization,” and they continued even after orders to stop, the briefing materials allege. There are indications that numerous members’ data may have been secretly residing not on their designated servers, but instead aggregated onto one server, according to the briefing and other sources. Authorities said that the entire server was then physically stolen.

When acting on the findings, Democratic leadership appear to have misrepresented the issue to their own members as solely a matter of theft, a comparison of the investigators’ findings with Democrats’ recollections and a committee’s public statement shows, leading 44 Democrats to not conduct protective measures typically taken after a breach — including informing constituents whose personal information may have been exposed. (A list of the involved members is below.)

The presentation, written by the House’s Office of the Inspector General, reported under the bold heading “UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS” that “5 shared employee system administrators have collectively logged into 15 member offices and the Democratic Caucus although they were not employed by the offices they accessed.”

German federal police said Wednesday that about 170 officers searched premises in Berlin and elsewhere across the country, and arrested two people.

They said simultaneous raids were conducted in Poland by Polish police. It wasn’t immediately clear if any arrests were made in Poland.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/turkey-set-extend-state-emergency-amid-concerns-52400706

“Turkey is set to extend a state of emergency for the sixth time since it was imposed following failed 2016 coup attempt, worrying government opponents and allies who fear the special powers are thrusting Turkey toward an increasingly authoritarian direction.

The state of emergency, declared five days after the July 15, 2016 coup, has allowed a massive government crackdown aimed at suspected supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey says was behind the coup attempt. Gulen denies any involvement.

The state of emergency has also paved the way for the arrest of other government opponents, including activists, journalists and politicians and the closure of media and non-governmental organizations over alleged links to extremist groups.

Most crucially, it has allowed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to rule through decrees, often bypassing parliament which he has long accused of slowing down his government’s ability to perform.

Among the more than 30 decrees issued since the coup, some have regulated the use of winter tires, obliged detainees accused of links to extremism to wear uniforms in court and gave full-employment rights to temporary workers. One vaguely-worded decree granting legal immunity to civilians who helped thwart the coup sparked an outcry and fears that it would encourage vigilante groups.

The complaint, filed by families of French women and children held by Kurdish militias, condemned what it called “deliberate inertia” by French authorities, saying it had left mothers and children — including infants — vulnerable to the risks of living in a war zone.

The two men on trial are alleged to have provided the explosive device and logistical support to the bomber.

An investigation found that the attack was the work of the military wing of Hezbollah, leading the European Union to declare it a terrorist organization.

The trial will continue on Feb. 6.”

  26. Algerian Historian: Arab Society Remains Tribal, Therefore Cannot Achieve True Renaissance

Algerian historian Dr. Nasser Al-Din Saidouni said that the Arab peoples, still in a “tribal” stage, have not been able to obtain the “internal stimuli” necessary to create a true renaissance, but instead “borrow European enterprises, imagining that they would save us and make us more progressive.”
Speaking in an Al-Arabiya TV interview on October 26, Dr. Saidouni said that “cultural stagnation” of the Arab and Islamic societies began in the 13th century, when they drew into a cocoon in an effort of self-preservation

  28. College says displaying a sign ‘color-coded pink for girls and blue for boys’ is a ‘bias incident’

A Massachusetts college has created a list of bias-incident examples — and one infraction just might get your rethinking your magic marker choices.

Williams College declares that “displaying a sign that is color-coded pink for girls and blue for boys” is among 21 bias-incident scenarios folks can report to school authorities.

How does the school define a bias incident?

The college defines bias incidents as “acts of conduct, speech, or expression that target individuals and groups based on race, religion, ethnic/national origin, gender, gender identity/expression, age, ability, or sexual orientation.”

But the Speak Up website — managed by the offices of the Dean of the College and the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity — notes that bias incidents “do not meet the necessary elements required to prove a crime.”

  29. Armed Federal Agents Seize ‘Massive Store’ Of Rebuilding Materials Kept From Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Victims
Puerto Rico electricity provider was “hoarding” critical items needed to restore electricity to the island.

Months after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, nearly half the island’s residents are still without power. Despite the Federal Emergency Management Agency sending hundreds of workers to the area to help restore the electrical grid, they’ve been at a loss as to where critical construction items, shipped to the island as part of the recovery effort, have gone.

Now, armed federal agents are reportedly taking the situation into their own hands. Over the weekend, FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began raiding warehouses, where the Puerto Rican Electric Power Authority has been “hoarding” these “critical materials” out of reach of aide workers.

(Mark Tapscott, Lifezette) An Australian investigative journalist who is a retired police detective said Tuesday he has been asked to provide the FBI with details about multiple allegations of mishandling millions of dollars contributed to the Clinton Foundation by the Aussie government.

“I have been asked to provide the FBI with further and better particulars about allegations regarding improper donations to the CF funded by Australian taxpayers,” Michael Smith told LifeZette.

At the center of Smith’s complaints are former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and multiple Australian government officials, including senior diplomat Alexander Downer, that government’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom.

A class taught this spring at Ohio State University will review a parade of reasons why white heterosexual masculinity is allegedly problematic, tackling the topic from the constructs of racial issues, bullying, pop culture, societal expectations and much more, according to its syllabus.

The course, “Be a Man! Masculinities, Race and Nation,” includes a variety of readings to that end, including its required textbook “Dude, You’re a Fag!” by C.J. Pascoe, which analyzes masculinity as not only a gendered process, but sexual one, its Amazon description states.

Other assigned reading excerpts include: “Masculinity as Homophobia” by Michael Kimmel; “Advertising and the Construction of Violent White Masculinity” by Jackson Katz; “Dude Sex: Dudes Who Have Sex with Dudes” by Jane Ward; “Looking for My Penis” by Richard Fung; “Sodomy in the New World” by Jonathan Goldberg; and “Teaching Men’s Anal Pleasure” by Susan Stiritz.

  32. Europe’s Betrayal of the Iranian People

    by Guy Millière

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11750/europe-iran-betrayal

It is hard to know exactly the current situation in Iran, but the uprising seems to be fading . The mullahs’ regime might survive a little longer.

The overthrow of a totalitarian regime takes place when the security forces — which ensure the survival of a regime that has been ruling through repression and fear — begin to falter, or else when the number of angry people becomes so big that a tidal wave sweeps away all in its path.

This time, Iranian security forces remained loyal to the regime and angry people were too few. The regime could manage the situation by killing a few dozen protesters, arresting four thousand

more, torturing and murdering some of them, and cutting off access to digital networks. It is a defeat not only for the Iranian people, but for all who defend freedom.

    The defeat, however, is temporary.

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11750/europe-iran-betrayal

    • Nearly eight decades ago, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and French Prime Minister Edouard Daladier went to Munich and came back with an agreement they professed would bring “peace in our time”. Winston Churchill famously warned at the time: “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war. ”

Leaders of Western Europe have again chosen dishonor. They are betraying the values they claim to embody — and again increasing the chances of war.

The last two paragraphs in the article, the peace at any cost crowd are in control of Europe and are trying to regain control in the US, the coming war caused by their refusal to live in the real world will be much worse then WWI and WWII combined. They will also do their best to blame the people who have been warning of the coming war for the war.

    • Europe’s Betrayal of the Iranian People

This “betrayal” is easily traced back to France’s harboring of Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini in the late 1970s. Few people seem willing to admit that the IRG (Iranian Revolutionary Guard) death toll imposed upon Iranians has far exceeded that of Shah Reza Pahlavi’s brutal SAVAK secret police. Even fewer can bring themselves to recognize that Iran’s mullahocracy has raped out that nation’s economy to such depraved extremes whereby they make the Shah look like a Boy Scout.

A more recent European betrayal of Middle Eastern Muslims would be the French providing residency for Suha Arafat and helping to shelter her billions of skimmed “Palestinian” foreign aid. Suha can only be described as Islam’s “Imelda Marcos”, and deserves to be dumped naked in the Gaza Strip during one of their regular food shortages.

  33. Beyond the Iran Nuclear Deal

    by John R. Bolton
    January 17, 2018 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11756/beyond-iran-nuclear-deal

President Trump seemingly served notice Friday that the days are dwindling for Barack Obama’s Iran agreement. Although deal proponents also gained time to pursue “fixes,” this is a forlorn option. No fix will remedy the diplomatic Waterloo Mr. Obama negotiated. Democrats will reject anything that endangers his prized international contrivance, and the Europeans are more interested in trade with Tehran than a stronger agreement.

There is an even more fundamental obstacle: Iran. Negotiating with Congress and Europe will not modify the actual deal’s terms, which Iran (buttressed by Russia and China) has no interest in changing. Increased inspections, for example, is a nonstarter for Tehran. Mr. Obama gave the ayatollahs what they wanted; they will not give it back.

Most important, there is no evidence Iran’s intention to obtain deliverable nuclear weapons has wavered. None of the proposed “fixes” change this basic, unanswerable reality.

Spending the next 120 days negotiating with ourselves will leave the West mired in stasis. Mr. Trump correctly sees Mr. Obama’s deal as a massive strategic blunder, but his advisers have inexplicably persuaded him not to withdraw. Last fall, deciding whether to reimpose sanctions and decertify the deal under the Corker-Cardin legislation, the administration also opted to keep the door open to “fixes” — a punt on third down. Let’s hope Friday’s decision is not another punt.

    • …Mr. Trump correctly sees Mr. Obama’s deal as a massive strategic blunder…

Whereas 0bama most likely views it as one of his greatest diplomatic triumphs.

Just this single contrast tells almost the entire story of why Trump can scrape more value to the American people from beneath his little toenail than 0bama will ever manage to produce in his entire lifetime.

  34. Sanctuary City Politicians May Be Prosecuted
DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says the Justice Department is on the case.
    January 17, 2018
    Matthew Vadum

Federal prosecutors are considering filing criminal charges against elected officials harboring illegal aliens in so-called sanctuary cities, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told lawmakers at a hearing dominated by Democrats hectoring her over whether President Trump used profanity during a closed-door negotiating session about immigration reform.

Jailing the leaders of sanctuary jurisdictions is long overdue.

The sanctuary movement gave illegal aliens permission to rob, rape, and murder Americans by, among other things, stigmatizing immigration enforcement. Some left-wingers use the dreadful euphemism “civil liberties safe zones” to describe sanctuary jurisdictions. The phrase blurs the distinction between citizens and non-citizens by implying illegal aliens somehow possess a civil right to be present in the U.S.

These sanctuary cities really ought to be called traitor cities because they are in open rebellion against the United States. They may as well be flying the Confederate battle flag at city hall in their modern-day campaign of massive resistance against federal immigration authorities.

Nielsen’s comments came in response to a question from Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday. Harris noted that Thomas D. Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency within DHS, told Fox News on Jan. 4 this year that the U.S. Department of Justice had been asked to “look into criminal charges for elected officials with sanctuary policies as they are harboring illegal aliens.”

  35. Celebs Give Up Protesting Homophobic Islamist Hotel
    January 17, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

The surprising thing isn’t that they stopped so quickly. It’s that they ever did it at all.

The boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel and the other Dorchester Group hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei has ended — with a whimper.

The protest began more than three years ago when the oil-rich sultan said he would introduce Shariah law in Brunei with penalties, including death, for homosexuality.

That’s Islam for you. Usually lefties go with it. This time they put up a token struggle of virtue signaling.

Condé Nast was early to join the boycott three years ago. Glamour editrix Cindi Leive said, “This is about basic human rights. No hotel is nice enough for that.”

The ban extended to the Dorchester in London, Le Meurice in Paris and the Principe di Savoia in Milan.

But last weekend, Architectural Digest Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley posted photos on Instagram of herself by the Beverly Hills Hotel’s pool and gardens with the caption: “My LA home for the weekend.”

  36. “Worst Case Scenario” Hits California Train to Nowhere
    January 17, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

It’s not an actual worst case scenario.

The worst case scenario would be that that the train gets built on time and on schedule. And then gets extended to Mexico and begins delivering illegal aliens directly to polling places. Or, if you’re a lefty, a light rail trail full of illegal gang members crashes into another train full of environment experts. And no one blames Trump.

But the train that is always in trouble… is in trouble again.

  37. Vox’s “Weighter”, Matthew Yglesias, Accuses Trump of Letting Terrorists Attack US to Win Election

    Daniel Greenfield

So slowly that hardly anyone noticed, Vox became a Truther site. Before long, they’ll be voxsplaining the temperature at which steel melts.

Vox’s Matthew Yglesias had already come forward as a “Weighter”, accusing Dr. Ronny Jackson of lying about Trump’s weight. Now he’s tiptoeing into full Truther territory.

“Donald Trump’s terrifying plan to win the 2018 midterms,” is the Vox headline.

What’s this terrifying plan? To let terrorists successfully attack America.

“Is Donald Trump hoping foreign terrorists attack the United States?” Matthew Yglesias is just asking the question. Does Matthew want ISIS to take over America so he can watch his political opponents beheaded on television while he marries 5 child brides?

I’m just asking the question here. Not coming to any conclusions.

  38. Obama Inc.Freed Illegal Aliens, Didn’t Check Terror Ties
    January 17, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

The left thinks that stopping illegal aliens and terrorists is racist. So it’s no surprise that Obama Inc. didn’t want to do its job.

During the Obama administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement was not following proper procedures when checking if illegal aliens were known terrorists, jeopardizing national security, according to an audit.

The office of inspector general found that between 2013 and 2015, ICE was not screening illegal immigrants who had been released for terrorist ties. Every single case of a suspected terrorist reviewed by the inspector general included errors, where ICE officials were not in compliance with security standards.

Between 2013 and 2015 there were 142 cases of illegal immigrants who were detained and identified as “known or suspected terrorists.” The inspector general reviewed 40 of those cases.

“All 40 files had at least one instance of noncompliance with KSTEP policy, generating greater concerns regarding the population of aliens screened and determined to have no connections to terrorism,” the inspector general said.

  39. 3 Out of 4 Convicted of Terrorism are Immigrants
    January 16, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

The left is scrambling to attack these numbers because they undermine its open borders agenda. But, facts are facts.

Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a report, revealing that three out of every four, or 402, individuals convicted of international terrorism-related charges in U.S. federal courts between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2016 were foreign-born. Over the same period, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed approximately 1,716 aliens with national security concerns. Further, in 2017 alone DHS had 2,554 encounters with individuals on the terrorist watch list (also known as the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database) traveling to the United States.

The report reveals that at least 549 individuals were convicted of international terrorism-related charges in U.S. federal courts between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2016. An analysis conducted by DHS determined that approximately 73 percent (402 of these 549 individuals) were foreign-born. Breaking down the 549 individuals by citizenship status at the time of their respective convictions reveals that:

    254 were not U.S. citizens;
148 were foreign-born, naturalized and received U.S. citizenship; and,
147 were U.S. citizens by birth.
