“Pakistani companies have been given a green light to use the Chinese yuan in trade with Beijing, which could potentially sideline the US dollar and other currencies used there. The move coincides with a US-Pakistan aid row.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said it “has taken comprehensive policy-related measures to ensure that imports, exports and financing transactions can be denominated in CNY,” according to a statement issued late on Tuesday. CNY is now effectively on par with the US dollar, euro and other international currencies in the country.
Companies are free to engage in CNY transactions with the immediate effect. “SBP has already put in place the required regulatory framework which facilitates use of Chinese yuan in trade and investment transactions,” the bank said.
It also noted the “growing size of trade and investment” between Pakistan and China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) agreement. The use of yuan will further boost bilateral trade and “will yield long-term benefits for both [of] the countries,” the bank added.
While Islamabad and Beijing had already been considering ditching the US dollar for yuan in bilateral trade for some time, the announcement comes at a particularly low point in US-Pakistani relations. US President Donald Trump has vowed to halt US aid to the country, stating in a recent tweet that Washington has “foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit.” Trump has been repeatedly accusing Islamabad of providing a “safe haven to the terrorists,” referring to Taliban militants.
The US administration subsequently confirmed that it would further withhold $255 million of military aid to Pakistan. Islamabad has expressed “deep disappointment” over Washington’s decision, while describing Trump’s remarks as “completely incomprehensible.””
Given the state of the Chinese economy this may not be good for China.

FRANCE – Residents plot to kick out far right band ‘poisoning the atmosphere’ of quiet French village
A far-Right masked female singing group has brought discord to a formerly tranquil southern French village whose only previous claim to fame was its sparkling mineral water.
Les Brigandes perform songs that target Muslims, Jews, journalists, gays, Jesuits, freemasons, politicians and Pope Francis. The band has male backing musicians and moved into La Salvetat-sur-Agout in 2015. They live in a commune of about 30 people, according to village residents.
An online petition against the group has gathered nearly 1,500 signatures, more than the population of the village, which has only 1,100 residents. Christophe Pourprix, who launched the petition, and another villager, Thierry Canals, have started legal action against the group for allegedly threatening to assault them.
“When they sing one of their songs, I Am a Fascist, they perform a Nazi salute and appear with Kalashnikov rifles instead of guitars,” Mr Canals, 60, told The Telegraph. “They’ve opened a shop selling neo-Nazi tracts, the writings of Jean-Marie Le Pen [founder of the Front National] and Mein Kampf.”
Videos by the group, said to be well known in far-Right circles, have been viewed millions of times on YouTube.
Its female singers generally appear in short skirts and Zorro-style masks. They sometimes don fake pig’s heads to poke fun of Muslims and Jews, villagers said.
“They’re against Arabs, blacks and anyone who isn’t white,” said Mr Canals, an ex-soldier who ran a local restaurant until last year. “Another of their songs, Foutez le Camp, is supposed to be a message to minorities to leave the country.”
“Lots of visitors come to their property and we often see cars with German or Swiss number plates parked there,” Mr Canals said.
Attempts to contact Les Brigandes went unanswered. They refused to answer the questions of a reporter for Le Parisien newspaper who went to their home.
The mayor, Thibault Estadieu, has reportedly urged residents to be tolerant of the group, which has performed for free at a local retirement home and takes part in community activities. Mr Estadieu was not immediately available to comment.
“The mayor claims they’re harmless but these people are neo-Nazis and I’m amazed that the authorities have not taken action against them for inciting racial hatred,” said Mr Canals, whose online blog, Le Panache Salvetois, has publicised their presence.
But not all villagers are opposed to them. Another resident, who requested anonymity, said: “You don’t know who’s for them and who’s against them. Marine Le Pen [the Front National leader] won 45 per cent of the vote here in the second round of the presidential election, and this is ruining friendships and poisoning the atmosphere in the village.”
The village is known for the slightly salty fizzy mineral water, La Salvetat, produced locally.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is investigating the timing of the memos former FBI Director James Comey wrote memorializing interactions between himself and President Trump, because it is possible that when Comey supplied copies to Columbia Law School Professor Daniel Richman, who transmitted at least one memo copy to The New York Times, one of them contained information that is now marked as classified.
Comey created seven memos; four, according to Grassley, are currently marked as classified.
Richman admitted last July that he had shared one memo, but denied President Trump’s claim that it held classified information. He told CNN, “No memo was given to me that was marked ‘classified.’ No memo was passed on to the Times … the substance of the memo passed on to the Times was not marked classified and to my knowledge remains unclassified.”

What began on December 28 as local protests against high food prices in the northern city of Mashhad, Iran, has spiraled into mass protests consisting of some hundreds of thousands of Iranians in some two dozen cities, including if not especially Tehran, the seat of government. So far over 20 people have been killed and many hundreds arrested in what has been widely described as “the most serious internal crisis the country has faced this decade.”
The protests have morphed from mundane topics concerning the economy to more existential topics concerning Islamic leadership. Reportedly hundreds of thousands of protesters have been heard shouting “We don’t want an Islamic Republic,” and calling blessings on Reza Shah, the staunch secularist and political reformer who did much to Westernize Iran, until his son and successor, Muhammad Reza Shah was deposed during the Islamic Revolution of 1979. According to Mideast media, women—such as Maryam Rajavi—are spearheading the current protests (and symbolically rejecting Islamic impositions by publicly removing their hijabs).
Even the Iranian regime sees the current unrest as a revolt against Islam. In his initial remarks after demonstrations first erupted, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said, “All those who are against the Islamic Republic … have all joined forces in order to create problems for the Islamic Republic and the Islamic Revolution” (note the recurrent and telling adjective “Islamic”).

Washington state Supreme Court precedent says hotel guest information is not subject to random searches. The AG’s lawsuit claims private information on at least 9,000 individuals was shown to ICE agents and is suing for $2,000 per violation which comes to $18 million.
The investigation in Washington was prompted by a newspaper story published last year which indicated that two Motel 6 locations in the city of Phoenix, AZ were tipping off ICE agents, leading to at least 20 arrests:
