  1. Breaking: EU chiefs refer Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic to ECJ over migrant quotas (express, Dec 7, 2017)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/889299/European-Union-EU-Hungary-Poland-Czech-Republic-ECJ-migrant-quotas

“BRUSSELS today risked further opening up the huge rift at the heart of the EU as eurocrats confirmed they are set to take three Eastern European states to court for refusing to accept migrant quotas.

EU officials announced they have begun court action against Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic over their opposition to the bloc’s mandatory relocation scheme.

The decision is likely to provoke a furious response from the leaders of the three states, which have all argued that the programme presents a security threat to their citizens.

In September Hungary and Slovakia lost an appeal to the ECJ against the legality of the scheme after arguing that it should have been taken by a unanimous decision of the member state.

After that case eurocrats wrote to all four states not honouring quotas, with Slovakia subsequently dropping their opposition, ordering them to immediately start taking in migrants.

In a statement the Commission said: “The replies received were again found not satisfactory and three countries have given no indication that they will contribute to the implementation of the relocation decision.

“This is why, the Commission has decided to move to the next stage of the infringement procedure and refer the three Member States to the Court of Justice of the EU.”

    More to follow.”

  2. CHRISTIAN CRACKDOWN: Church closed down by police for ‘printing teachings’ (express, Dec 7, 2017)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/889289/Christianity-persecution-church-closed-down-printing-gospel-Algeria-Muslim

“A CHURCH was closed down by police after it was accused of “illegally” writing gospels.

The church had allegedly printed off the teachings for a sermon in the Muslim-dominated country of Algeria, which is being gripped by Islamist terror movements.

Authorities claim the church, in Ain Turk, has been used to “illegally print Gospels and publications intended for evangelism”.

Police say the church, affiliated with the Protestant Church of Algeria, does not have state approval, despite its president saying it has been recognised by the government since 1974.

Reverend Mahmoud Haddad said the reasons for closing the church were “unfounded”.

He said: “Firstly, this community is affiliated to the Protestant Church of Algeria, which has been officially recognised by the government since 1974 and is accredited with both the Ministry of the Interior and the local government.

“Also there is no printing activity of Gospels or Christian publications inside these premises.”

Christians from a Muslim background living in Algeria face pressure from their families to recant their faith.

Religion in Algeria is largely dominated by Muslims, at around 99 per cent of the population.

While the vast majority of Muslims adhere to Sunni Islam, there are almost 37,700 Christians in Algeria, according to charity OpenDoors.

The charity says the country’s law makes it impossible for churches to operate publicly, while it is dominated by growing Islamist terror movements, particularly al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

As part of the crackdown, a number of churches have been ordered to cease all religious activities on the grounds that they were in breach of a 2006 law which regulates non-Muslim worship.

  3. UAE ‘surprised and disappointed’ over EU blacklisting (abcnews, Dec 7, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/uae-surprised-disappointed-eu-blacklisting-51641355

“The United Arab Emirates says it is “surprised and disappointed” about being blacklisted by the European Union along with 16 other countries the EU deems guilty of unfairly offering tax avoidance schemes.

The UAE said in a statement on Thursday that it’s “committed to a reform process which will be finalized by October 2018” and that it’s “absolutely confident this will ensure the UAE is swiftly removed from the list.”

The EU announced the list on Wednesday, though penalties still need to be confirmed.

The UAE is a federation of seven sheikhdoms that includes Dubai and the oil-rich capital of Abu Dhabi. Dubai’s massive real estate market has attracted both scrupulous and unscrupulous investors.

The UAE is largely tax-free, though value-added taxes will begin in the country on Jan. 1.”

  4. The Latest: Africa’s al-Shabab urges Muslim to take up arms (abcnews, Dec 7, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/latest-erdogan-trump-hurls-mideast-ring-fire-51638358

“The al-Qaida-linked extremist group al-Shabab is urging Muslims to take up weapons in response to President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The group’s spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud says it calls “on all Muslims to raise arms and defend the blessed al-Aqsa from the Zionist occupiers supported by America, because what was taken by force can only be restored by force.”

His message was carried by the Somalia-based group’s news agency.

Al-Shabab, the deadliest Islamic extremist group in Africa, calls the U.S. decision on Jerusalem as “evidence of an escalation in its aggression against Islam and Muslims.”

Al-Shabab was blamed for the massive truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and was one of the world’s deadliest attacks since 9/11.”

  5. Study Reveals 83 Per Cent of ‘Underage’ Migrants Tested in Sweden Are Adults (breitbart, Dec 7, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/12/07/updated-study-reveals-83-per-cent-underage-migrants-sweden-adults/

“The Swedish government has released new figures showing that 83 per cent of migrants tested who claimed to be children were adults.

As of November 30th of this year, the Swedish government has medically tested 8,797 migrants to determine if they were being truthful about their age. Medical tests revealed that 7,342 of the migrants tested could be over the age of 18, with the vast majority — 7,146 individuals — being male.

The Swedish National Board of Medicine, who carry out the tests, said that a further 65 cases could not be determined because the migrants in question were missing their wisdom teeth or incapable of undergoing other tests, like MRI scans of knee joints.

The tests to determine the age of migrants who declared themselves to be under 18 began earlier this year in mid-March, and early results from July showed the number of adults to be 86 per cent…”

  6. Greeks Unnerved Over Erdogan’s Call to ‘Revise’ Turkish-Greek Border Treaty (sputniknews, Dec 7, 2017)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201712071059788143-erdogan-revision-turkish-greek-border-treaty/

“The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, the post-WWI document defining the borders of modern-day Turkey, including its western borders with neighboring Greece, has been called into question by the Turkish president.

Less than a day before setting off for his historic two-day visit to Greece, Erdogan told Greek journalists that the treaty is in need of an update.

“In fact, all agreements pacts in the world should be updated over time,” Erdogan said, speaking with Greece’s Skai TV and the Kathimerini newspaper. “Lausanne too, in the face of all these developments, is in need of an update. This update would be beneficial not only for Turkey but also for Greece,” he added.

Erdogan did not expand on what sorts of changes he had in mind, but called the distances between some of islands in the Aegean Sea, over which Turkey and Greece have competing claims, “problematic.” He added that issues concerning territorial waters, airspace and the continental shelf could be “easily” resolved.

The Turkish leader’s remarks were met with confusion and concern in Greece, where the Lausanne Treaty is seen as the foundational document in peaceful bilateral relations between the two countries. Greek government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said that the Turkish president’s comments raised “serious concerns and questions.”

“Comments regarding [the treaty’s] revision do not contribute to the climate we are trying to build in our relations and in the region,” he added.

Wednesday’s remarks were not the first time that Erdogan has raised the issue of the Lausanne Treaty’s possible revision. In 2016, he complained that the Treaty saw Ankara “give away” Turkish islands in the Aegean. “They were ours. There are our mosques, our shrines there,” he said, adding that Turkey’s territorial disputes with its neighbor in the present are a consequence of the treaty.

Erdogan’s much-anticipated two-day trip to Greece on Thursday and Friday will be the first visit to the country by a Turkish head of state in 65 years. The two nations, both members of the NATO alliance, have a long history of conflict, and came to the brink of war in 1974, 1987 and 1996 over disputes over Cyprus and islets and mineral rights in the Aegean. The two countries also regularly engage in mock aerial warfare, sometimes resulting in real casualties, over competing airspace claims. Erdogan is expected to discuss the Aegean territorial dispute issue during talks with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

Observers also expect Erdogan to bring up the eight Turkish army officers who fled to Greece following the failed July 15, 2016 Turkish coup attempt currently being harbored in the country. Athens has ignored Ankara’s extradition requests out of fear that the servicemen may not receive a fair trial in their home country. In Wednesday’s interview with Greek media, Erdogan said that Prime Minister Tsipras had promised him a speedy extradition of the officers in the days following the coup attempt, but later reneged.”

    • The treaty regulates the borders not only with Greece, but with Bulgaria as well, and this is top news here.

      • You’ve protected your borders, nobody’s gonna mess with you.
Bulgaria has a good memory and more guts than the combined EU kingpins have in total.

  7. Record 400 arrests for terror-related offences were made in the UK in the year to September – including more than 50 women (dailymail, Dec 7, 2017)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5155109/Record-400-terror-arrests-UK-year.html

“The number of suspects arrested in terrorism investigations has reached a record high, official figures reveal.

A total of 400 people were held for terror-related offences in Britain in the year to the end of September, the highest tally since data collection started in 2001 and a jump of 54% compared to last year.

The 400 total includes 12 arrests made in connection with the Westminster attack, 23 after Manchester, 21 after London Bridge and one after the Finsbury Park attack,
It was also revealed that 58 of those held were female – the highest number on record.

A Home Office statistical bulletin said: ‘As a result, the number of arrests in the year to 30 September 2017 was the highest since the data collection began.’

Just under a third of those arrested, 115 people, were later charged, with the vast majority of those charged with terrorism-related offences.

More than 200 of those arrested were were released without charge, 60 were released on bail pending further investigation and 11 faced so-called ‘alternative action’.

The increase includes a 77% rise in the number of white suspects held, from 81 to 143.
Earlier this week, a report revealed that counter-terror teams are currently running about 500 live investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any one time, while there is also a wider pool of 20,000 subjects of previous probes.

In a briefing given to the Cabinet on Tuesday, the head of MI5 Andrew Parker revealed that total of nine Islamist terrorist plots have been thwarted in the UK over the past year.

Two men appeared in court yesterday after security services said they interrupted an alleged plan to blow up the gates to Downing Street and assassinate Prime Minister Theresa May.

Accusations also emerged yesterday, in a separate case, that an alleged extremist encouraged followers to attack Prince George at his primary school. He too faces court action.

An official report earlier this week found that spies missed crucial opportunities to thwart the Manchester terror attack which cost 22 lives.

UK counter-terrorism officials might have prevented suicide bomber Salman Abedi blowing himself up at a pop concert if intelligence had been given greater priority.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd told the Commons that the jihadist atrocity on May 22, which left adults and children dead, could have been avoided ‘had the cards fallen differently’.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the ringleader of the Islamist terror gang which brought bloodshed to central London on June 3 was being investigated by MI5 and police for his extremist views.

Khuram Butt – one of three men who slaughtered eight people in a van and knife rampage – had been on the authorities’ radar for two years because of concerns he wanted to attack the UK.

Despite the findings, David Anderson QC, a former anti-terror laws watchdog who examined the four main attacks of the summer, said: ‘The excellent recent record of MI5 and the police in defending the UK from terrorist attack came to a brutal end this year.

‘Despite elevated threat levels, the fundamentals are sound and the great majority of attacks continue to be thwarted.’

Mr Anderson said: ‘In particular, MI5 and the police have identified the need to use data more effectively, to share knowledge more widely, to improve their own collaboration and to assess and investigate terrorist threats on a uniform basis, whatever the ideology that inspires them.'”

ONDON (Reuters) – Arabs and Muslims across the Middle East on Wednesday condemned the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as an incendiary move in a volatile region and Palestinians said Washington was abandoning its leading role as a peace mediator.

The European Union and United Nations also voiced alarm at U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and its repercussions for any chances of reviving Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.

Major U.S. allies came out against Trump’s reversal of decades of U.S. and broad international policy on Jerusalem.

  11. Erdogan riles Greek hosts with revisionist talk

Athens (AFP) – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began a state visit to Greece on Thursday, the first by a Turkish head of state in 65 years, by needling his hosts with revisionist border talk and complaints about its treatment of Muslims.

In what he called a “historic” visit, Erdogan said Athens was neglecting the Muslim minority of Turkish origin that lives in northern Greece, and accused the European Union of ignoring promises of financial support given last year in return for Turkey’s help in stemming refugee flows.

“The European Union… has not put into effect any of the promises it gave on the economic side (whereas) we are abiding by our commitments,” Erdogan told Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

  13. Tidalgate: Climate Alarmists Caught Faking Sea Level Rise

Alarmist scientists have been caught red-handed tampering with raw data in order to exaggerate sea level rise.

The raw (unadjusted) data from three Indian Ocean gauges – Aden, Karachi and Mumbai – showed that local sea level trends in the last 140 years had been very gently rising, neutral or negative (ie sea levels had fallen).

But after the evidence had been adjusted by tidal records gatekeepers at the global databank Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) it suddenly showed a sharp and dramatic rise.

The whistle was blown by two Australian scientists Dr. Albert Parker and Dr. Clifford Ollier in a paper for Earth Systems and Environment.

  14. North Korea says U.S. threats make war unavoidable as China urges calm

SEOUL (Reuters) – Two American B-1B heavy bombers joined large-scale combat drills over South Korea on Thursday amid warnings from North Korea that the exercises and U.S. threats have made the outbreak of war “an established fact”.

The annual U.S.-South Korean “Vigilant Ace” exercises feature 230 aircraft, including a range of the U.S. military’s most advanced stealth warplanes, and come a week after North Korea tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to date which it says can reach the mainland United States.

A spokesman for the North’s foreign ministry blamed the drills and “confrontational warmongering” by U.S. officials for making war inevitable.

  15. Vandal who left bacon inside mosque gets 15 years in prison

A man who vandalized a Central Florida mosque by smashing windows and lights with a machete and leaving bacon at the scene pleaded guilty to criminal mischief to a place of worship.

The state attorney’s office serving Brevard and Seminole counties said Michael Wolfe was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 15 years of probation after he pleaded guilty Tuesday. The sentence had a hate crime enhancement.

The 37-year-old was sentenced as a habitual offender. Titusville police arrested Wolfe in January 2016 after the New Year’s Day vandalism. A surveillance video showed him smashing lights, cameras and windows with a machete.

Bacon was left by the front door. Consumption of pork and pork products made from pork is forbidden in Islam.

  16. Goolag Archipelago: Google Sends Powerful Migrant Crisis Video by POLISH GOVERNMENT to ‘YouTube Jail

YouTube has ‘quarantined’ a hard-hitting video on Europe’s migrant crisis released by Poland’s conservative government, as part the platform’s crackdown on “hate speech and violent extremism”.
The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration’s video has been placed in a controversial state designed by YouTube to limit access to videos it says contain “supremacist” or “extremist” content, but which don’t break any of the platform’s rules.

Opening with dramatic scenes of migrants swarming into Europe, the video highlights EU leaders’ insistence that the newcomers be spread throughout the continent, and forced even on unwilling nations through compulsory quotas.

But YouTube has now placed the powerful video in “limited state” — a condition designed to severely reduce the potential audience for “borderline” content. Videos placed under this system are unsearchable, impossible to embed on other sites, and removed from users’ recommended videos lists.

The only way to reach ‘quarantined’ content is by clicking a direct link to the video in question, at which point viewers are warned that the “content is inappropriate or offensive”, asking them to click a button before they are allowed to proceed.

YouTube has also shut down comments on videos which have been placed in this “limited state”, and removed view counts and up-votes and down-votes, making it impossible to see the reach of the video, or know how it has been received.

Google unveiled the policy in August among a raft of new measures which the video-sharing website said it will use to counter “extremism”. It announced a partnership with 15 “expert NGOs and institutions” — including the Council of Europe’s left-wing No Hate Speech Movement and George Soros-linked groups — who will direct them in identifying objectionable content.

Explaining the system, YouTube said it bans content which “promotes violence or has the primary purpose of inciting hatred against individuals or groups based on certain attributes”, as well as “content intended to recruit for terrorist organizations, incite violence, celebrate terrorist attacks, or otherwise promote acts of terrorism.”

According to YouTube’s blog post, the Polish government’s video must have been judged a “borderline” case, which describes content which “[contains] inflammatory religious or supremacist content without a direct call to violence or a primary purpose of inciting hatred.”

  17. Lebanon emerges from crisis with Iran on top, but risks remain

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Iran’s allies in Lebanon have emerged even stronger from a crisis triggered by Saudi Arabia, which achieved little more than to force the Saudis’ main Lebanese ally – Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri – closer to Tehran’s friends in Beirut.

Saudi Arabia aimed to hurt Iran in Lebanon by forcing Hariri’s resignation on Nov. 4 and torpedoing his coalition deal with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies, using its influence over the Sunni leader to cause trouble for the Shi’ite group.

Instead, the move backfired as Western states censured Riyadh over a step they feared would destabilize Lebanon, despite their shared concerns over the regional role of the heavily armed Hezbollah.

Hariri revoked his resignation on Tuesday, drawing a line under the crisis caused by his announcement from Riyadh. Lebanese officials say he was put under house arrest before French intervention led to his return home. Riyadh and Hariri deny this.

  18. Masterpiece Cake Shop and the now-inverted idiocy of ‘protected characteristics’
    By J.E. Dyer December 6, 2017

I’m straight. Suppose I go into a bakery and tell the baker I’d like to order a wedding cake for the nuptials of my friends Paul and George.

If the baker declines to serve that particular request, because he doesn’t provide cakes for same-sex weddings, has he discriminated against me? Remember, I’m the customer. There is no situation covered by law – at least none that exists now – in which the baker can be said to have discriminated against Paul and George, who are not the customers.

The baker hasn’t discriminated against the customer on the basis of sexual orientation. It’s quite probable he doesn’t even know my sexual orientation at the time of refusal. I’ve never once gone into a business establishment and announced that I’m straight before initiating a transaction. We can assume I didn’t in this case.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2017/12/06/masterpiece-cake-shop-now-inverted-idiocy-protected-characteristics/

    • This is a masterpiece of clarity on what is at stake in the case of the baker that is being decided by the Supreme Court. It is about equal treatment under the law (as she describes in the article) and if the rule of law is going to survive.

This is another case of identity politics striking at the core values of the US and the US Constitution. If the Baker wins the case it won’t stop the slow destruction of the rule of law and individual rights, but if he looses it will be a very large stake through the heart of individual and religious rights.

  19. Hamas says Trump’s Jerusalem decision ‘opens the gates of hell.’ Why does that sound familiar?
By Howard Portnoy December 7, 2017

Oh, noes! Following Donald Trump’s announcement yesterday that the American embassy in Israel would be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a spokesman for the terrorist group Hamas said, “Trump’s decision on Jerusalem will not succeed in changing the fact that Jerusalem is an Arab Muslim land.” He punctuated his acknowledgment with a threat that the move “opens the gates of hell.”

That sounds pretty ominous. Who wants the gates of hell open?

Actually, it turns out the gates of hell have been opened before, as recently as Oct. 31 of this year:

  20. Global Islamophobia Follows Trump’s Embassy Move
Why would anyone think Muslims would react violently?
    December 7, 2017
    Robert Spencer

President Trump displayed more courage and integrity Wednesday than Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama ever did when he ended twenty-two years of waivers postponing the U.S. Embassy to Israel’s move to Jerusalem, declared that the U.S. recognized that Jerusalem was Israel’s capital, and announced that preparations for the embassy move would begin forthwith. And the world reacted with…Islamophobia.

“Today,” Trump said, “we finally acknowledge the obvious. That Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. This is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.” He added: “This decision is not intended in any way to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement. We want an agreement that is a great deal for the Israelis and a great deal for the Palestinians….The United States remains deeply committed to helping facilitate a peace agreement that is acceptable to both sides. I intend to do everything in my power to help forge such an agreement.”

Nonetheless, the reaction was predictable. Pope Francis obliquely denounced the move, saying: “I appeal strongly for all to respect the city’s status quo, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.” A spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “We do not support President Trump.” French President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump’s move was “regrettable.” British Prime Minister Theresa May called the move “unhelpful for peace prospects.”

  23. A Conyers Civil War in Detroit’s Dirty Dynasty
John Conyers II is out. Long live John Conyers III.
    December 7, 2017
    Daniel Greenfield

After spending almost 60 years in Congress as a politician and a staffer, Rep. John Conyers II has to decide which of his many relatives to pass Michigan’s 13th congressional district to. It’s like King Lear, if Shakespeare’s fictional monarch had been forced to step down after groping a woman in church.

The 13th is a very nice district to inherit. Conyers has won it by 77%, 79% and 82%. Fidel Castro couldn’t ask for better elections. Whichever Conyers clan member gets it will be staying in Congress for 60 years.

And will inherit Rep. Conyers’ government Cadillac Escalade.

The Conyers fief stretches from Detroit to Highland Park to Garden City in Michigan’s lower peninsula. It’s majority African-American. A quarter of the population is unemployed. Median household income is $29K. Only 14% of the serfs on the Conyers political plantation even have a college degree.

It’s a typical Democrat plantation where only the politicians have a future.

One day, Rep. John Conyers took John Conyers III up a hill or toxic waste dump overlooking the parts of Detroit, the failed schools, murder hospitals and burned out buildings that are the legacy of the Conyers family and said, “Son, one day all this will be yours.”

  24. CFPB Child-Bureaucrats Go Rogue With “Dumbledore’s Army”
    December 7, 2017
    Daniel Greenfield

It’s another episode of Babes in Gov-Toyland.

We’ve had outbreaks of this before. After Trump’s victory, some of these cells began calling themselves Obama Anonymous. One cell within the CFPB is calling itself, “Dumbledore’s Army.”

Some employees, including a few of the bureau’s top officials, have welcomed their new leader. Others, pointing to Mr. Mulvaney’s earlier hostility toward the agency and its mission, are quietly resisting. One small group calls itself “Dumbledore’s Army,” according to two of the people who were familiar with their discussions. The name is a reference to a secret resistance force in the “Harry Potter” books.

An atmosphere of intense anxiety has taken hold, several employees said. In some cases, conversations between staff that used to take place by phone or text now happen almost exclusively in person or through encrypted messaging apps.

    Two things.

    1. It was embarrassing being a member of Generation X. Being a millennial has to be even worse. Not only have we got rogue bureaucrats who have decided to wage a war against democracy, but they’re also overgrown children. Maybe the new motto should be, “Don’t trust anyone at the CFPB under 30.” And if they ride a bike to work, have a magic wand at their desk and keep urging everyone to recycle, just fire them now.

    2. Joking aside, this is yet another case of government employees trying to override elected officials. This is no different than Federal judges deciding that they can override any Trump policy. And it gets to the root of the old question about who runs the country. Do the people run the country. Or does a permanent government class decide everything.

Dumbledore’s Army has taken a clear position on that. And the encrypted messaging shows that the #Resistance members are breaking the law and actively sabotaging elected officials.

It’s time to find them and fire them.

  26. San Francisco Show Trial Sequel
“Great Left Hope” lawyer for Kate Steinle’s killer now wants gun possession charge tossed.
    December 7, 2017
    Lloyd Billingsley

Last week, a San Francisco jury acquitted seven-time felon Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a repeatedly deported Mexican national, of all murder and manslaughter charges in the July 1, 2015, fatal shooting of Kate Steinle as she walked with her father and a friend on Pier 14. The jury found the confessed shooter guilty only of felony gun possession. Many observers decried the verdict as a travesty of justice, but they were mistaken if they thought it could not get any worse.

San Francisco public defender Matt Gonzalez now seeks to have Zarate’s gun possession charge dismissed. Gonzalez is contending the jury should have been told that “momentary” possession of a gun is not necessarily a crime. “If you possess it just to dispose of it or abandon it, it wouldn’t be a crime,” Gonzalez told reporters. The Steinle family and relatives of murder victims have new cause for outrage, but this gambit is consistent with Gonzalez and the San Francisco show-trial in which he co-starred.

  31. Bulgarian Parliament Moves to Criminalise Radical Islam, Support of Jihad, Sharia, Caliphate (breitbart, Dec 7, 2017)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/12/07/bulgarian-parliament-moves-criminalise-radical-islam/

“The Bulgarian parliament has moved to criminalise the promotion of radical Islam, including advocating a caliphate, religious violence, and sharia law.

The legislature adopted the amendments to the nation’s criminal code aimed at tackling radical Islam on their first reading this Wednesday.

They were proposed by a nationalist electoral alliance called the United Patriots (UP).

Promoting any ideology of violence or one threatening the law and constitution of the nation could be punishable with one to five years in jail and a fine of around £2,000, the Bulgarian newspaper Dnevnik reports.

UP Member of Parliament Boris Yachev told the paper that the change in law was not aimed at targeting a religion but a dangerous ideology.

“Radical Islam is a particularly aggressive and dangerous ideology that justifies violence and the murder of [infidels],” he said, insisting it also excused “slavery and genocide” as a “systemic policy”.

His party proposed a legal definition of radical Islam, which, according to the law’s parliamentary reading, includes “when a person is agitating for the creation of an Islamic State [or caliphate]”.

Other tenets are promoting religious law over secular law, the “forcible application of religious principles”, advocating violence including “sacred war against non-Muslims [jihad]”, and recruiting people into Islamist terrorism…”

  33. WSJ – Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Identified as Buyer of Record-Breaking da Vinci

U.S. government intelligence and a Saudi art-world figure familiar with the purchase say Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman used a proxy to purchase the 500-year-old ‘Salvator Mundi’

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the buyer of a painting by Leonardo da Vinci that sold for a record $450.3 million last month, according to U.S. government intelligence and a Middle East art-world figure familiar with the purchase.

The disclosure offers a rare glimpse inside a rivalry between two Persian Gulf nations to scoop up some of the world’s masterpieces and settles one of the biggest mysteries in the art world.

[…]Saudi officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Prince Bader had purchased the painting, citing documents.

[…]And in a twist, a former adviser to the Qataris said Sotheby’s offered the family a chance to buy the da Vinci six years ago for around $80 million, but the family turned the house town. The piece later sold to Russian fertilizer billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, who resold it last month at Christie’s.

[…]Called “Salvator Mundi,” meaning savior of the world, the painting depicts Christ as a Renaissance man dressed in flowing blue robes. While Muslims regard Christ as a prophet, Islamic religious scholars and clerics generally regard the depiction of human forms of prophets as a sacrilege.

A lost Leonardo da Vinci painting was rediscovered after 500 years — but critics have spotted an unusual flaw

The flaw has led some historians to question the painting’s authenticity, according to The Guardian. The Guardian’s article is currently the subject of a legal complaint made on behalf of Christie’s International Plc, according to an update to that article.

[…]The history of “Salvator Munti” has had a lot of twists and turns. It was sold at auction in 1958, with its authorship unknown, for less than $100.

In the late 2000s, it was sold again, restored, and identified as a da Vinci work. The painting was displayed in London’s National Gallery in 2011. In 2013, the chemicals billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev purchased it for $127.5 million. It’s expected to be purchased for at least $100 million at auction later this month, according to The Guardian.

  34. SWITZERLAND – Geneva bans burkini and topless bathing in city’s swimming pools

Geneva authorities on Tuesday voted in favour of a new rule defining the attire people may use to swim in the city’s pools after a long-running argument.

Under the new definition, swimmers must wear a one-piece or two-piece swimsuit which comes down no lower than knee level, keeps arms bare and is not a “swim skirt or dress”, reported La Tribune de Genève.

The definition effectively bans swimmers from wearing a burkini or bathing topless, which had both been allowed under a previous rule that only came into effect in September.

Back then, city councillors wanted to better define the clothing swimmers may wear in public pools after problems with young people trying to swim in ‘street wear’, which raised questions of hygiene.

As a result, pools specified that swimmers were authorized to wear “any clothing that is specifically used for swimming”.

At the time Geneva’s sports minister told La Tribune de Genève that hygiene was the main concern and burkinis were really not an issue, since there had only ever been one case of someone wearing a burkini in a city pool.

But the definition inflamed the political right and since then the debate has increasingly centred around the burkini, said the paper.

On Tuesday city authorities voted by 41 to 30 in favour of a new definition for swimwear that effectively outlawed the burkini and topless bathing.

The move was condemned by many, including Christian Democrat Alia Chaker Mangeat who said it would “create a new controversy,” and could fuel the argument of extremists.

Socialist councillor Sami Kanaan deplored the new ruling, saying it constituted the “denial of an open, multicultural and liberal Geneva”.

Burkini ban: Women must show bare legs and arms at Geneva swimming pools

Critics say the ban could fuel the arguments of anti-Islam extremists.

Geneva has become the latest city to ban women from wearing burkinis in public swimming areas.

The city council voted on Tuesday (5 December) to ban any swimwear that covered women’s legs and arms.

The definition effectively bans people from wearing a burkini or swimming topless.

The move was condemned by many, with Christian Democrat Alia Chaker Mangeat warning that the ban would further fuel the anti-Islam arguments of right-wing extremists.

“It creates a new controversy. It is a godsend for extremists whose stock-in-trade is to reject the other,” Mangeat said.

Socialist councillor Sami Kanaan said the new rule constituted the “denial of an open, multicultural and liberal Geneva”.

Left-wing politician Pierre Gauthier rejected the criticism and said women should not be forced to cover up. He said the government should not be seen “trivialising the ideology of enslavement”.

“It’s like pretending that by putting chains on slaves, they could walk around and be free,” he told Le Courrier.

Anti-burkini attitudes have flared up in the past two years across Europe.

In November, two women were kicked out of a swimming pool in Granada, Spain, because they were wearing burkinis.

Jemí Sánchez, councilor for social rights of Granada council, described the incident as an “Islamophobic hate crime.”

In 2016, a number of places in France banned women from wearing burkinis on the beach.

The ban was suspended after France’s highest administrative court ruled that it was illegal and violated women’s fundamental liberties.

  35. Lise Tamm: Rinkeby is almost like a war zone

The situation in the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby is so serious that it can be compared with a war zone.
That’s what Lise Tamm means, who, from the turn of the year, acts as head of the National Unit against International and Organized Crime, working against organized crime in Sweden.
And ideas for solving the problems can be obtained from conflict resolution in, for example, Colombia and El Salvador, says Lise Tham to Studio Ett.
    – Rinkeby is almost like a war zone. When the police work there, those work defensive, she says, continuing:
    – And then I thought: How did they do in Colombia when they deported the Farc guerrillas, how did you do in El Salvador when the war ended? How have you done in other parts of the world where you have had such great problems for many, many years? Is there any solution you have to think outside the box.
Among other things, Lise Tamm wants to find solutions that give social services tools to take care of the young men who get angry. It is not enough to get more police, she considers.
Anders Ygeman, former home minister and now the Social Democrats group leader in the Riksdag, faces the image of Rinkeby as a war zone, because there are hundreds of active police and a new police station is being built, he says.
    – The police there are active and do a good job. IF we look at other vulnerable areas, like Bishop’s Farm, we have basically zero shootings now. In Malmö we have a record number of detainees, 80-90 people are in prison. So we have a good and active police area in all these areas. So we do not need to overdo the situation, it’s serious enough as it is, says Anders Ygeman
Even local politicians in the Järva area are turning against the description of Rinkeby as a war zone
“I live in Rinkeby and have lived in Tensta as a child. When I hear the word war zone, I start thinking about Syria, Yemen, and other countries that are most seriously in war, says Mohammed Nuur, president of Social Democrats in Tensta. “We have problems and challenges, but you should definitely not exaggerate what the situation looks like. I live in Rinkeby and I do not feel scared, says Mohammed Nuur.
