Retailers are using facial recognition to collect data about customers as they shop in stores, according to an IT company with insight into the space.
“One of the big things brick-and-mortar retailers are getting into now is knowing their customers … tracking who’s entering their mall and how they’re behaving,” said Mark Lunt, group managing director at Asia-based Jardine OneSolution.
JOS works with the retail sector on facial recognition to profile customers that enter and track their movements.
The data collected include “how many people are coming in, age, ethnicity, gender — it’s all about knowing the foot traffic better and trying to serve more appropriate offers to those customers,” Lunt said.

Venezuelans suffer as malaria outbreak spreads in drug-short nation
CIUDAD GUAYANA, Venezuela (Reuters) – On a recent morning in Venezuela’s southern jungle state of Bolivar, Amanda Santamaria, her two sons, one daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter lined up in front of a shabby community health center in the hope of receiving treatment for malaria.
All five of them are afflicted by the mosquito-borne disease, which is rapidly spreading through Venezuela as an economic meltdown strips the country of medicine and doctors.
“We don’t know if this is a curse, but the entire area is awash in malaria,” said Santamaria, 56, suffering her second bout of the illness in the last three months and relying on palliative herbal teas because she has not found regular drugs.
The family was waiting with some 500 others under the scorching sun in the hope of receiving treatment.

Facebook announced Wednesday that it’s creating a resource for users to see if they’ve interacted with content created by a firm with alleged ties to the Kremlin.
The portal will show people if they have “liked or followed” the Internet Research Agency, a Russian company, which many say tries to influence the larger public in favor of the Russian government.
“It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 US election,” the company wrote in a blog post titled “Continuing Transparency on Russian Activity.” “That’s why as we have discovered information, we have continually come forward to share it publicly and have provided it to congressional investigators. And it’s also why we’re building the tool we are announcing today.”

Free speech shrinks due to bans on hostile or offensive speech

On Thanksgiving, give thanks for freedom of speech, or what’s left of it. The First Amendment guarantees “the freedom of speech.” Despite this, the Supreme Court occasionally lets Congress restrict speech based on dubious rationalizations. But usually, it strikes down laws restricting speech based on its content or message, stating that “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable,” and that “above all else, the First Amendment means that government has no power to restrict expression because of its message, its ideas, its subject matter, or its content.”
The courts have usually turned a blind eye to these free-speech principles in their enforcement of bans on speech deemed to create “hostile or offensive” work environment based on race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation. Many things that create a hostile work environment are properly banned (such as offensive sexual touching, demands for sexual favors, obscenities, fighting words, and racist acts of intimidation). But hostile or offensive speech about political issues is logically a different matter, since the courts have correctly refused to recognize a hate-speech exception to the First Amendment, and not all offensive speech is even hateful.

The famous expression “Never Again” was coined after the world, during World War II, almost exterminated its Jewish population. But instead of anti-Semitism being eradicated, a worldwide rebellion against the people who gave us the Ten Commandments continues today, and has now expanded to include other groups.
While the Jewish people are still at its center, there are now also violent protests, hatred and rejection cleverly camouflaged as demonstrations against supposed “bigots,” and “hate groups” — meaning not only those who support Israel and the Jewish people, but also against those who are patriots, who love God, family and country and who want to protect their nation’s sovereignty from the world’s hostile forces. These individuals are now often viewed as evil, mean-spirited or racist.
Anti-Semitism is a bit more complicated than just hating Jews. Much of the world seems always to have been challenged by the values of the Torah, the Gospel and the Ten Commandments. Living according to Biblical standards of good and evil, and treating one’s neighbors as oneself, is not easy for most people. There is a rebellious, dark side of human nature that every generation needs to conquer if we are to maintain a way of life based on the values set forth by the Ten Commandments and the Bible. But in the West’s secular, popular culture of today, generations are being brought up believing that these values stand in the way of “progress,” however that is variously defined.

EGYPT – At least 235 worshippers killed in terror attack on mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai
At least 235 worshippers have been killed by gunmen who attacked a Sufi mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai during Friday prayer, the general prosecutor’s office announced in an official statement, making the attack one of the deadliest targeting civilians in the country in recent years.
The statement said at least 109 people were injured in the attack that targeted Al Rawdah mosque in Bir Al-Abed, 80 km west of Arish city.
The president’s office has announced a nationwide three-day mourning following the terrorist attack, state TV has reported.

This was also witnessed on October 29, as the regime launched a massive crackdown effort to prevent any gathering marking International Cyrus Day, in memory of an ancient Persian ruler known to be the author of the world’s first human rights charter.
Reports indicate that Iran deployed thousands of Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), Basij, and Intelligence Ministry members alongside hordes of plainclothes agents to prevent any possible gathering mirroring the 2016 scenario on this same day.

The U.S. State Department has courted controversy by announcing it will plough $700,000 into Hungarian media, angering the country’s anti-globalist, conservative government.
The funding was announced by U.S. Chargé d‘Affaires David Kostelancik, who has previously appeared to openly criticise the Trump administration by alluding to “apparent inconsistencies in [U.S.] foreign policy” and remarking that “not every criticism of the government is ‘fake news’.”
Breitbart London spoke to a State Department official who confirmed it supports what it calls “democracy and human rights programming” in many countries, and that its intentions in Hungary — a NATO ally — are to “support media outlets operating outside the capital … to produce fact-based reporting and increase their audience and economic sustainability”.
The State Department also echoed Kostelancik’s claim that too many Hungarian news outlets are sympathetic to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s popular conservative government — which has earned powerful enemies by opposing the European Union on mass migration, building a highly effective border wall, and exposing the network of European politicians deemed “reliable allies” by billionaire open borders campaigner George Soros.
The obvious subtext to all of this is that the State Department funding effort is intended to bolster anti-government and opposition media. This suggests it is still pursuing Obama era, anti-conservative policy objectives internationally in defiance of President Trump, who has praised Prime Minister Orbán — the first European leader to back him — as “strong and brave”.

Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers detained the regional leader of a female branch of the Hizb ut-Tahrir group at her apartment in St. Petersburg, as shown in footage released on Friday. It was not revealed when the arrest actually took place.
The international Muslim extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir was banned in Russia according to a decision of the Supreme Court on April 14, 2003.

Pakistan’s refusal to take action against Saeed as well as his free movement around the country has been one the biggest stumbling blocks in Pakistani-Indian relations.
Since 2012, the United States, for its part, has offered a $10 million reward for any information that brings Saeed to justice.
The group is believed to be behind the deadly Mumbai bombings in 2008 that left 166 dead and 300 others wounded in India’s most populous city.”

“An Ethiopian imam seeking asylum in Switzerland has been found guilty of inciting violence, local media report. The imam called for the killing and burning of Muslims who refused to join communal prayers, and also distributed execution photos online.
The asylum-seeking imam expressed the sentiments during Friday prayers at An’Nur mosque in the town of Winterthur in October 2016, 20 Minutes reported. “In his homily of Oct. 21, 2016, in the An‘Nur Mosque, he is accused among other things of calling for expelling Muslims who do not pray in the community, and even burning them and killing them in their homes if they still refuse,” prosecutors said in a statement in August.
The 25-year-old claimed that he did not speak Arabic well and had delivered a prepared sermon without understanding what he was saying. DETROIT – Doctor at center of mutilation case freed from jail
Detroit — Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, the Northville doctor accused of mutilating the genitalia of “countless” young girls, was released on $4.5 million unsecured bond Tuesday after seven months in jail.
Nagarwala, 44, was freed after more than a dozen friends came to federal court and pledged to pay the largest unsecured bond in Detroit federal court history if she flees while awaiting a June trial — the first trial nationwide involving female genital mutilation.
She traded handcuffs and leg shackles for a GPS tether and will live at an undisclosed hotel with her father, who agreed to watch her 24 hours a day and ensure she complies with bond conditions. Nagarwala cannot have contact with witnesses or victims in the case, and is barred from living at home while the state tries to strip her parental rights to two minor children, though she can have supervised visits.
“She’s obviously really happy to be getting out, especially right before Thanksgiving,” her lawyer Shannon Smith told The Detroit News. “This will be easier to prepare for trial.”
Nagarwala smiled at friends and relatives in the courtroom gallery, including her father and her husband, Moiz Nagarwala.
The names of those who pledged to pay the $4.5 million bond were sealed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Stafford.
Her release came despite federal prosecutors calling Nagarwala a danger to the community and a flight risk with ties to Africa and India and access to $2.4 million in assets that could bankroll a prolonged flight from justice. Prosecutors previously emphasized that Nagarwala was arrested in April while trying to board a flight to Kenya for a prearranged visit with two of her four children who study abroad.
Nagarwala is among eight people charged in a case alleging a 12-year conspiracy that involved cutting prepubescent girls as part of a procedure practiced by some members of a small Muslim sect from India, the Dawoodi Bohra. Locally, most members of the sect belong to the Anjuman-e-Najmi mosque in Farmington Hills.
Prosecutors estimate up to 100 girls were cut during the 12-year conspiracy. So far, the indictment references six victims.
Nagarwala has been jailed since April after prosecutors say two 7-year-old girls from Minnesota were cut at the Burhani Medical Clinic in Livonia.
The procedures happened even though the FBI had installed a hidden camera outside the clinic before the girls arrived. There is no indication in court records that investigators were watching the surveillance footage in real time, were aware of its significance initially or knew about the alleged surgeries beforehand.
Authorities also allege four girls from Michigan ages 8-12 were cut.
The procedure the government says was performed on the girls by Nagarwala was benign and not female genital mutilation, defense lawyers argue. Some defense lawyers have accused the government of overreaching.
Some members of the Dawoodi Bohra community told prosecutors that genital mutilation is performed to suppress female sexuality, reduce sexual pleasure and curb promiscuity, according to court records. The procedure has no health benefits, according to the World Health Organization.
Nagarwala was freed two weeks ahead of a court hearing during which her lawyers will try to convince U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman to dismiss the most severe charge, a sex count punishable by up to life in federal prison.

BERLIN — The impasse that has gripped German politics all week showed signs of breaking Friday as a main center-left party backed down from pledges that it would not consider teaming with Chancellor Angela Merkel to form a government.
The shift gives Merkel a potential path out of a crisis that has been called the worst of her 12-year tenure. It also lessens the chance that Germans will go back to the polls in early 2018 after an inconclusive September election left the country without an obvious formula for a stable government.
Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) remains the dominant party, but it still needs to work with other parties to cobble together a governing partnership.
Since the September vote, the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) have insisted they will go into opposition rather than form another “grand coalition” with the CDU.

“The Church of England has responded to criticism of the sexualisation of infant students wearing the Islamic headscarf by encouraging its schools to continue setting “culturally and religiously sensitive” uniform policies.
Last week, it was reported that school inspectors will begin speaking to primary school girls wearing hijabs to ascertain why they are covering their hair, amidst concerns children as young as four are forced to cover by teachers and parents.
The Chief Inspector of Schools, Amanda Spielman, said the hijab “could be interpreted as sexualisation of young girls” and should be questioned, as it is not traditionally worn until puberty.
She also explained that schools could also be in breach of equality laws if girls are required to wear religious clothing but boys are not.
However, the Church of England did not appear to share these concerns, seemingly justifying the garment in the “communities they serve”.
A spokesman from Church House, the headquarters of the Church of England, responded to Mrs. Spielman’s comments on Tuesday, telling the Church Times: “Research shows that there are many reasons why pupils wear the hijab in school.
“Our approach is to encourage local schools to set uniform policies having due regard to the cultural and religious sensitivities of the communities they serve, in balance with the well-being of their students.”
The announcement that girls in hijabs will be questioned came after a recent survey of 800 primary school websites found that one fifth, including Church of England schools, listed the hijab as part of their uniform.
Mrs. Spielman then met with Muslim feminists and secular campaigners, who called for a hijab ban in taxpayer-funded primary schools and described allowing infants to wear it as part of school policy as an “affront” to gender equality.
In a letter to The Sunday Times, they accused the UK of having “an abysmal record” of protecting Muslim girls “who suffer under the pretext of protecting religious freedoms”, criticising the country’s responses to “so-called sensitive issues such as female genital mutilation and forced marriages”.”
