“A court in eastern Germany has told a Syrian woman that she is not allowed to appear in court for divorce proceedings against her husband unless she takes off her headscarf, Tagesspiegel reports.
The woman’s lawyer received a letter from the presiding judge at the district court in Luckenwalde, informing her that “religiously motivated statements, such as the wearing of a headscarf, will not be allowed” during the court case, Tagesspiegel reported on Tuesday.
The letter warned that the woman could face legal sanctions if she does not comply with the instruction. At the same time, it instructed her to appear in person for the proceedings, leaving her in an apparently impossible situation.
The woman’s lawyer now plans to take legal measures against the court instruction, claiming it to be a breach of the constitution.
Officials in courts in Germany have a duty of religious neutrality, and are generally not allowed to wear religious symbols.
But civilians who appear in the court are not bound by the laws on religious neutrality. The Federal Constitutional Court ruled in 2006 that a judge has no right to expel a spectator from a court proceeding because they are wearing a headscarf.
Defence lawyers are also not bound by rules on religious neutrality, and may wear a headscarf or other symbols of religiosity.
The district court in Luckenwalde defended the decision, telling Tagesspiegel that the judge “is responsible for ensuring rules are adhered to in the courtroom, where religious symbols have no place.”

QUEBEC – Muslim cemetery: The story is not over, Couillard says
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said he was disappointed with the results of a vote against opening a Muslim cemetery in St-Apollinaire, and said a great majority of Quebecers agree with him.
In a press scrum on Tuesday in Edmonton, where he is attending the Council of the Federation meetings, Couillard emphasized that the cemetery project’s rejection was a result of a “very small number of people.”
Thirty-six of 49 registered voters were entitled to vote in Sunday’s referendum – 16 voted yes, 19 voted no, with one ballot discarded.
Rejecting criticism of the Quebec government’s failure to intervene during the campaign leading up to the vote in St-Apollinaire, Couillard said that the “story is not over” and that he sees “the need for the government to get involved in finding a solution.”
Couillard said he believes it is “fundamental” that Muslim Quebecers have the guarantee of a cemetery.
At a funeral following the Ste-Foy mosque shootings in January, Quebec City mayor Régis Labeaume promised Muslims in the capital “they would have their cemetery.” The shooting victims were buried in Montreal or abroad. A portion of the Jardins Québec multi-confessional cemetery in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, some 30 kilometres west of Quebec City, has recently been reserved for Muslims.
Labeaume said Monday he “regrets” the results in St-Apollinaire.
Said Couillard on Tuesday: “We know this community, of course, especially since the tragic circumstances we have known. We will sit down with them, with the mayor of Quebec City… Let’s see if we can find a solution together.
“I remember thousands of people on the streets calling for solidarity and affection for Muslims,” Couillard said, referring to solidarity gatherings after the Ste-Foy shooting. “That is what Quebec wants to see and hear.”

Only a modern leftist so called intellectual would fixate on this, or even make a big deal about it, back when I was in school we were taught that Rome was a multi racial society and that most of the Greeks and Italians had the skin tones of modern day Greeks and Italians. But the modern pseudo intellectuals have to try and deconstruct Western Civilization with the skin tone of ancient Greeks and Romans. For that matter if you look at the ancient Egyptians paintings you see brown, white and black skin tones. And the DNA tests of the Mummys show that most of them were a mix of European and Arabic people.
