“Washington- US President Donald Trump demanded Qatar on Friday to stop funding terrorism and extremist groups, saying Doha “has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level.”
In remarks in a joint press conference with President Klaus Iohannis of Romania, Trump said his administration will work on solving this problem, adding: “No civilized nation can tolerate this violence, or allow this wicked ideology to spread on its shores.”
He thanked Saudi Arabia and King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and all the countries that participated in the historic Islamic summit in Riyadh last month.
“It was truly historic. There has never been anything like it before…Hopefully, it will be the beginning of the end of funding terrorism … No more funding.”
“I addressed a summit of more than 50 Arab and Muslim leaders — a unique meeting in the history of nations — where key players in the region agreed to stop supporting terrorism, whether it be financial, military or even moral support,” he said.
“The nation of Qatar, unfortunately, has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level, and in the wake of that conference, nations came together and spoke to me about confronting Qatar over its behavior,” Trump added.
The president told reporters in the White House Rose Garden that he decided, along with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and generals at the Pentagon that the time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding and its extremist ideology in terms of funding.
Less than two hours earlier, Tillerson urged Qatar to be “responsive to the concerns of its neighbors” and immediately crack down on extremist funding.
Qatar has made progress in halting financial support and expelling terrorists from the country, but it “must do more” and “must do it more quickly,” he said at a press conference in the State Department.
“The situation in the Arabian Gulf over the last few days is troubling to the United States, the region, and to many people who are directly affected,” Tillerson said, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to the spirit of the Arab Islamic American Summit.
He also announced support to the mediation efforts of Kuwait’s emir, calling for calm and no further escalation.
“We call on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt to ease the blockade against Qatar. There are humanitarian consequences to this blockade. We are seeing shortages of food, families are being forcibly separated, and children pulled out of school. We believe these are unintended consequences, especially during this Holy Month of Ramadan,” Tillerson added.”

“SEVERAL organizations including the Muslim World League (MWL) Friday came out in support of the Qatar-linked people put on the terror blacklist.
Arab states — Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain — that have cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar tightened their squeeze late Thursday by putting dozens of people linked with Qatar on terrorism blacklist, while Qatari ally Turkey came to its side with plans to send troops, warships and planes.
The developments intensified a confrontation between Qatar and a group of Arab nations led by Saudi Arabia and Egypt that accuse it of fomenting instability. The dispute has created a major diplomatic test for the United States, which is a close ally of the countries on both sides.
In an apparent escalation of the crisis, staff at Al Jazeera, Qatar’s influential satellite television news channel, said on Thursday its computer systems were under cyber attack.

The MWL said the sanctions confirm the commitment of the Kingdom and its sisterly countries to fight terrorism and block its sources, funding and supporting, pointing out that the international community should intensify its efforts to counter the activities of terrorist organizations as well as supporters and incubators of terrorism.
Among the 59 people included in the terrorist blacklists, 18 are Qataris, including Abdullah Bin Khalid Al-Thani, a former interior minister and member of Qatar’s royal family.
The Qatari government said the move “reinforces baseless allegations that hold no foundation in fact”.
Many of the others added to the list are figures associated with the Muslim Brotherhood who have made Qatar a base, including Al-Qaradawi. Some are prominent militants who have fought in Libya and Syria.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whose AK Party has its roots in Islamist politics and who has voiced support for the Brotherhood, signaled his firm backing for Qatar by swiftly signing a law to send Turkish troops to a base there.
In a signal of Turkey’s urgency over the issue, parliament passed the law on Wednesday, Erdogan signed it on Thursday and it was published in the state gazette by Friday.
Turkey will send warplanes and warships to Qatar after an initial deployment of troops at a base in Doha, the mass-circulation Hurriyet newspaper said on its website.
“The number of Turkish warplanes and Turkish warships going to the base will become clear after the preparation of a report based on an initial assessment at the base,” Hurriyet said. Around 90 Turkish soldiers are currently at the base, it said.
Turkish officials were not immediately available to comment on the report but Hurriyet said there were plans to send some 200-250 soldiers within two months in the initial stage.
Staff at Al Jazeera said on Thursday the Qatari state-funded network, which is watched by millions of people across the Arabic-speaking world, had come under a sustained cyber attack but was still functioning.
Would-be mediators in the Gulf crisis, including US President Donald Trump and Kuwait’s ruling emir, have struggled to ease the situation.
Trump initially took sides in tweets with the Saudi-led group, before apparently being nudged into a more even-handed approach when US defense officials renewed praise of Qatar where their base is located.
Qatar’s ambassador to Washington said on Thursday his government trusted Trump’s ability to resolve the dispute.
“The most important engagement that happened so far from the US is by the president, which we highly appreciate,” Meshal Bin Hamad Al-Thani told the Financial Times. “We truly believe that the involvement of the president and the US will bring this crisis to an end.” — With input from Agencies”
It’s difficult to see this entire Qatari kerfuffle as anything but the sort of infighting that is badly needed to fragment Arab solidarity. Especially useful has been Turkey outing itself as pro-terror. At the very least, this should strangle-in-the-cradle any aspirations of Turkey’s accession to the EU. Something that is crucial to Europe’s overall survival as open borders with Turkey would unleash a flood of “immigrant” Muslims and terrorists on a par with those now arriving from Libya.
Another vital message to be taken away from all of this is Edogan’s jockeying to position Turkey as the seat of a modern caliphate. While this has been in the cards for some time, it’s still good to see the mask ripped away from Turkey’s charade as peacemaker or “refugee” backstop. With so much of Turkey’s once-promising secular (i.e., Ataturk) apparatus having been dismantled by Erdogan, it is crucial that a general understanding comes about as to the country’s (now open) alignment with pro-terrorism factions.

“Damascus: According to The Financial Times, Qatar spent over $3 billion (Dh11 billion) to $4 billion in funding the Syria war and has paid up to $50,000 per year to defectors from the Syrian army and their families. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimated that over 70 weapons cargo flights were made within 12 months, carrying Qatari arms to Syrian rebels between April 2012 and March 2013. The Syrian National Council (SNC), the main political opposition, was Qatar’s brainchild and was given a warm welcome in Doha, where it allowed its leadership to use the building of the shuttered Syrian embassy to operate.
It also gave the SNC Syria’s official seat during the Arab League Summit in 2013, which Doha hosted.
When the SNC was founded, Qatar’s main contact was Mustafa Al Sabbagh, a construction businessman turned secretary-general of the National Coalition who used to write cheques for Syrian fighters and opposition members from his base in Doha.
Months later, the Saudis managed to wrestle control of the Syrian coalition from Qatar’s grip, alarmed by the rising presence of the Muslim Brotherhood in its top ranks, most being long-time proteges of the Qatari leadership.
Saudi Arabia was worried by the election of Mohammad Mursi in Cairo, and feared another Mursi in Damascus.
In early 2016, the Saudis created a broader coalition comprising senior figures called the Higher Negotiations Committee (HNC) headed by ex-Syrian prime minister Riad Hijab, a Baathist, tasked with leading the opposition in the UN-mandated Geneva talks.
The Saudis reached out to a wider spectrum of Syrian figures, ranging from Kurds and Arab nationalists to former Baathists and Islamists, but were always cautious about dealing with the Brotherhood, despite assurances from its deputy chief Farouk Tayfour, who when meeting then-Saudi foreign minister Saud Al Faisal, that they would be different from their Egyptian comrades if they ever reached power in Syria.
Most members of the Syrian Brotherhood still reside in Qatar and are frequent guests on Al Jazeera, while figures like Riad Hijab live in Doha but handle all their business meetings in Riyadh — a balancing act made all the more difficult after Saudi Arabia suspended all airline flights to Qatar and closed off its land border with Doha, accusing its Emir of cuddling up to the Iranians and working with a broad coalition of terrorist groups, headed by the Muslim Brotherhood. The SNC official political opposition, has been noticeably quiet amid the unfolding Qatar crisis. “The crisis will likely cast a heavy shadow on the SNC,” Akram Khuzam, former bureau chief for Al Jazeera in Moscow, told Gulf News.
Khuzam, who parted ways years ago with the controversial TV station, says the SNC will be watching whether Qatar pivots completely towards Iran — a country which backs militias in Syria fighting the opposition.
In Syria, pro-government activists on social media networks are gloating over the ostracisation of Qatar.
State-run television in Damascus is giving the story prime coverage — so are pro-Hezbollah outlets like Al Mayadeen, or their official mouthpiece, Al Manar TV.
Members of the opposition, however, are refusing to take sides — waiting to see how the crisis will unfold.
All Qatar-backed Syrian politicians approached by Gulf News have refused to comment. Hassan Hassan, a Senior Fellow at the Washington-based Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, told Gulf News that even before the Qatar crisis, Saudi Arabia promised to work with the US to undermine Islamists in Syria.
“I predict the Syrian opposition will further splinter as a result of the Qatar crisis,” George Qadr, a Syrian writer in the Netherlands told Gulf News.
“Rebel groups backed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar could wage war against each other, instead of against the government,” he added.”

Two gay men were denied entry into a gay pride parade in Charlotte, N.C., simply because they support President Donald Trump.
The group hosting the parade, Charlotte Pride, rejected a request from Brian Talbert and one of his gay friends for a float at the event that is scheduled to take place Aug. 26 and 27. Talbert, a leader of the group known as “Gays for Trump,” found out via email May 16 that his float application was denied, according to Fox affiliate WJZY.
“Dear Gays for Trump: This message is to confirm that we have received your application for entry in the 2017 Charlotte Pride Parade,” the email reads. “Unfortunately, we are not able to approve your application. Thank you, Charlotte Pride Parade Team.”

Color me totally unsurprised. I happen to be on semi-friendly terms with the president of our community’s LGBT Community Center. As part of keeping my hand in with respect to lecturing about the history of renewable energy, along with talks about additive and subtractive processes (e.g., 3-D printing), I offered to provide some educational presentations at the center.
However politely, the center’s president basically stated that participants there had zero interest in such subjects. Personally, I find such lackluster pursuit of self-education (especially about leading-edge technologies) to be rather telling. Even more so when taking into account how the university, college, and high school students who attend my talks routinely score them in the nine-out-of-ten and ten-out-of-ten range.
Intolerance and ignorance have a well established history of going hand-in-hand.

“A Turkish court has formally arrested Amnesty International’s chairman in the country pending trial on charges of membership in a terror organization, Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency said Saturday. The rights group called it a “mockery of justice.”
Taner Kilic was arrested in the western province of Izmir along with five other attorneys who are accused of using ByLock, an encrypted mobile messaging application. Kilic was detained on Tuesday and arrested late Friday.
ByLock is allegedly used by the network of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Turkey blames for orchestrating last summer’s coup attempt and leading a terror organization. Gulen denies all allegations.
Amnesty International called Kilic’s arrest a “devastating injustice” and called for his release. The rights group said authorities allege Kilic’s link to Gulen by claiming that ByLock was discovered to have been on his phone in August 2014. Kilic has denied downloading or using the application and Amnesty said there was no substantiated evidence to support the claim.
The rights group’s secretary general, Salil Shetty, called Kilic “a principled and passionate human rights defender” who has been critical of Gulen’s movement.
Shetty said the charges against Kilic are without merit and “show just how arbitrary, just how sweeping, the Turkish government’s frenzied pursuit of its perceived enemies and critics has become.”
Under a state of emergency declared after the failed coup, more than 50,000 people have been arrested and 100,000 public employees expelled from their posts for alleged links to Gulen.

“At least three civilians were killed by gunmen inside a mosque in eastern Afghanistan on Friday, the Interior Ministry said.
The ministry said that nine others were wounded in the Friday night attack in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, in a statement released Saturday.
The ministry strongly condemned the attack and called it “an act against Islam and humanity.” It said the civilians were attacked while praying.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban and Haqqani network are active in Paktia and neighboring provinces and often target government officials as well as Afghan security forces in the region.
In a separate report from southern Helmand province, at least two border police officers were killed Friday night after their checkpoint was struck by U.S. military forces during a joint operation, said Omar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor in Helmand.
Zwak said that three other policemen were wounded in the airstrike carried out during the operation against insurgents in the Nad Ali district.
“What we have so far is the initial report of the air strike” said Zwak, adding that an investigation was underway and that the dead toll could rise.
There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military on the airstrike in Helmand province.”

The U.S. Embassy in Manila said without elaborating that U.S. special operations forces were providing help to Filipino troops battling the Maute and Abu Sayyaf militants in Marawi.
“The United States is a proud ally of the Philippines, and we will continue to work with the Philippines to address shared threats to the peace and security of our countries, including on counterterrorism issues,” the embassy said in a statement.
Philippine marines were conducting a house-to-house search for militants allied with the Islamic State group who are still occupying parts of Marawi when the battle erupted Friday, said Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, spokesman for the Philippine army’s 1st Infantry Division.
About 30-40 militants used civilians as human shields, making it hard for troops to operate, and also positioned themselves in the city’s many mosques.
Forty other marines were wounded, Herrera said.
Philippine military officials say the violence has left at least 138 militants and 58 government troops dead. At least 21 civilians have been killed, including a boy who was hit by suspected militant gunfire inside a Marawi mosque where his family had taken refuge, Padilla said.

“Marches against Islamic law were planned Saturday in more than two dozen cities across the United States, but scholars and others say the protesters are stoking unfounded fears and promoting a distorted and prejudiced view of the religion.
The group organizing the rallies, ACT for America, claims Shariah “is incompatible with Western democracy and the freedoms it affords.”
But most Muslims don’t want to replace U.S. law with Islamic law, known as Shariah, and only “radical extremist groups” would call for that, said Liyakat Takim, a professor of Islamic studies at McMaster University in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario.
Shariah, Takim said, refers to guidelines or principles — how Muslims should live. “Fiqh” refers to jurisprudence, or specific laws. The values embedded in Shariah do not change and are shared among Muslims, he said, while fiqh is open to interpretation and change, and in fact differs among Islamic sects and communities.
“In the public domain, Muslims are not required or expected to impose their laws on the country in which they live as the minority,” Takim said, adding there has never been an understanding “that the same laws would be applicable at all times in all places.”
“The Quran allows slavery, so does the Old Testament. That doesn’t mean we allow it today, too,” he said. “Laws are amenable to change.”
The marches come amid a rise in reports of anti-Muslim incidents in the U.S., including arson attacks and vandalism at mosques, harassment of women wearing Muslim head coverings and bullying of Muslim schoolchildren.
But while there is little likelihood that Shariah would ever supplant U.S. law, some states have already moved to insulate themselves against the possibility.
Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Louisiana, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Tennessee have enacted laws prohibiting the use of foreign law in state courts, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
In Idaho a Republican lawmaker earlier this year introduced a measure aimed at preventing Shariah from being applied, though an Idaho judge has never based a ruling on Islamic law.
Two far-right groups, the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters, are to provide security at some of the anti-Shariah demonstrations, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups.
ACT for America has chapters around the country and says it is focused on fighting terrorism and promoting national security. It says it condemns bias against religious groups and is “proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with peaceful Western Muslims as well as peaceful Muslims worldwide.”
On Saturday counter-demonstrations were planned by opponents who called the events anti-Muslim.
Rep. Debbie Dingell?, a Michigan Democrat who says her district has the largest population of Muslims in the U.S., said the marchers “will be total failures on Saturday because we will be united against them.”
Freedom of speech has already become a contentious issue surrounding the marches, apparently the first simultaneous anti-Shariah rallies held across the U.S.
A march had been planned for Portland, but an organizer moved it to Seattle after Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler called on the federal government to deny a permit. Wheeler said the rally would exacerbate tensions after two men were stabbed to death in May on a commuter train while protecting two teenage girls from a man casting anti-Muslim slurs.
The organizer said “inflammatory comments” by Wheeler put participants at risk of violence. The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon scolded Wheeler, saying trying to deny a permit without imminent threat of violence amounted to unconstitutional government censorship.
Seattle was one of the cities where a counter-march was planned. Aneelah Afzali, who heads a Seattle-area group that works against discrimination and hate crimes, said she will also be putting up an “ask a Muslim booth” so people can ask questions directly about Islam, and dispel any misconceptions.
“We want to counter (the anti-Shariah march) and keep it as positive as possible, and educate people about what Islam teaches,” Afzali said in a phone interview…”

“He has opposed wars in the Middle East, had lobbied for the Palestinians and even vowed to recognise Palestine immediately after he is elected.
“Who else has promised us this? For those of you who do not believe in voting, how are you going to change the system if you don’t play by the system.
“Other minorities have a greater say in the country than we do even though we are one of the biggest minorities in the UK.”
The text also said that the Conservatives and UKIP would “bring in policies that will negatively impact on young Muslims particularly.

“Every vote for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party will help stop the Islamophobic policies of Ukip and the Conservatives.”
Despite the messages, Walsall North swung from Labour to the Tories in the election, with veteran Labour MP David Winnick losing out to Conservative Eddie Hughes. Labour held Walsall South.
The message was sent out in the name of Councilors Aftab Nawaz and Khizar Hussain, two Labour party members of Walsall Council.
Mr. Hussain did not respond to requests for comment but Mr. Nawaz told The Daily Telegraph the messages “may have been” sent out in his name. He insisted, however, he had not sent it himself.
“Somebody may have sent it and put my name at the bottom of it – it is not something that I have had anything to do with. I have not seen that”, he claimed.
Mr. Nawaz also stressed his background was “promoting inter-community harmony, working with the multi-faith forum” and said he had attended “a lot of Holocaust memorial events”.
He added: “I would be very much disgusted if anyone was talking about anti-Semitism. I have not seen the message myself but if it is talking about minorities I would be surprised if it was Jewish minorities.””

“An event organised by Gays Against Sharia to mark the anniversary of the Orlando shooting has been branded “divisive” and “Islamophobic” by LGBT activists planning a counter-protest.
The organisers of the Unite Against Hate march, set to take place in Manchester on Sunday, say they organised the event to “honour the victims of hate”, including the 49 people who lost their lives at Pulse, a gay club in Orlando, Florida, at the hands of an Islamic terrorist on June 12, 2016.
Planned speakers include author Shazia Hobbs, a Glaswegian who was forced into an arranged marriage at 18 with a man who beat her, believing it was his right under Sharia law; Mohammed Fiaz, a Christian convert from Islam; and founder and former leader of the English Defence League Tommy Robinson.
But LGBT activists have reacted with fury, insisting the event is nothing more than the cynical hijacking of gay rights by the “far right” as a cover for Islamophobia. Two groups, Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants, and Action for Trans Health, are arranging a counter-protest against the march.
“We’re protesting because the far-right want to use Orlando and the recent killings in the UK to demonise all Muslims,” one of the organisers of the counter-protest, Anna, told Pink News.

Opponents have seized upon his presence to claim the march is nothing but a front for far-right Islamophobes.
Pink News quotes Sam Bjorn as saying: “As LGBT+ people we won’t stand idly by as far right bigots like the EDL attempt to use our rights as a weapon against people from the Muslim community.
“When groups like the EDL are preying on tragedy like the recent attack in Manchester to promote hate and division, it’s more important than ever to come together and say that we do not tolerate their Islamophobia and racism.
“We encourage everyone, gay or straight, to join us on 11 June to show that the LGBT+ community and the people of Manchester won’t let the hate of far-right bigots divide us.”
Pink News has joined in the condemnation, branding the event as a “fake” and accusing the organisers of “hijacking the first anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting with an anti-Muslim march,” which it described as a “disturbing tactic”.
Veteran gay rights activist Peter Tatchell has also entered the fray, tweeting his opposition to the march.
When confronted by fellow Twitter users who accused him of “defending the wrong people”, he reacted by tweeting his “delight” at having been “targeted” by “fascists”, as he said it showed he had “rattled the far right”.
Just a few weeks later Tatchell tweeted an appeal to help overturn the death penalty for homosexuality, which still exists in several countries.
The ten countries in which homosexuality is punishable by death are Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In some cases, the laws apply only in regions of the country under Sharia law or are only applicable to Muslims.”

UK: Police appeal for info on pink knives used in London Bridge attack

Qatar will pay the Ashcroft Law Firm $2.5 million (2 million pounds) for a 90-day period as the country seeks to confirm its efforts to fight global terrorism and comply with financial regulations including U.S. Treasury rules, according to a Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA, filing on Friday with the Justice Department.
“The firm’s work will include crisis response and management, programme and system analysis, media outreach, education and advocacy regarding the client’s historical, current and future efforts to combat global terror and its compliance goals and accomplishments,” according to a letter by Ashcroft firm partner Michael Sullivan included in the filing.
Qatar faces isolation by fellow Arab countries after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt severed ties with Doha on Monday, accusing it of supporting Islamist militants and their adversary Iran. Qatar denies the allegations.
The crisis is a major diplomatic test for the United States, which is a close ally of countries on both sides but has given mixed signals on whether to isolate Qatar or bring it into talks with other Gulf countries.
Trump on Friday accused Qatar of being a “high level” sponsor of terrorism in remarks made shortly after his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, pushed Qatar’s Arab neighbours to “immediately take steps to de-escalate the situation.”
The Ashcroft firm was hired to do a compliance and regulatory view of Qatar’s anti-money laundering and counterterrorist financing framework, Sullivan said in an email.
“Qatar is confident that the review and analysis will confirm that Qatar has significant measures in place to prevent and detect efforts to launder funds and/or to use its financial systems to finance terrorist organizations,” he said.
Ashcroft was U.S. attorney general under President George W. Bush from February 2001 to February 2005, turbulent years in which U.S. policies and laws were reshaped by the so-called war on terrorism that followed the 2001 al Qaeda attacks.
Ashcroft’s firm includes an array of former senior government officials including Sullivan, a former U.S. attorney in Massachusetts appointed by Bush to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).”

Perhaps this might lend some much-needed perspective as to why Duterte is so hell bent on scouring out Marawi—all of fifty miles from where the Maguindanao Massacre happened.

A driver was apprehended after crashing into a wall at Central Station in Amsterdam on Saturday, injuring pedestrians
The culprit was running from police after being approached for standing where it was not allowed
A motorist was arrested in Amsterdam on Saturday, after a car he was driving hit a wall at Central Station that injured at least eight pedestrians.
Dutch police confirmed that the culprit was taken into custody and interrogated, but initial indications are that the act wasn’t intentional. Two of the victims had serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital, while the rest were treated on the spot, authorities said.
The driver crashed after being approached by police for standing in a prohibited area.
Local television station AT5 News reported that while running away from the police at high speed, the motorist drove onto a square in front of the station — crashing into a wall near the entrance to the subway.
Dutch police said the incident did not appear to be deliberate, but they were investigating further.

LIBYA – Saif al-Islam Gaddafi freed from prison in Zintan
Zintan-based militia releases Saif al-Islam, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, who was toppled in 2011 uprising.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been released from prison, according to fighters who control the facility.
A statement from the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion, a militia which controls Zintan, a mountainous region southwest of the capital Tripoli, said Saif al-Islam was released late on Saturday.
The most prominent of Gaddafi’s sons, Saif al-Islam, 44, was captured in Zintan in November 2011 as he was fleeing to neighbouring Niger after opposition fighters seized Tripoli.
Saif al-Islam, the most prominent of Gaddafi’s eight children, was sentenced to death in July 2015 by a court in Tripoli in a mass trial of former Gaddafi government officials.
He is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The commander of the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion, Ajmi al-Atiri, was set to release a video statement explaining the details of the release.
Since the Gaddafi’s four-decade rule ended in 2011, Libya has struggled to establish basic institutions and rule of law, with militias and former fighters challenging the authority of the weak central government.

Colonel Gaddafi’s son, Saif al Islam, has been released from prison by rebels in western Libya.
He was being held by an armed group controlling the town of Zintan since November 2011.
The Abu Bakr al-Sadiq Brigade said Saif al Islam was released on Friday, “the 14th day of the month of Ramadan” under an amnesty agreed by the parliament based in the east.
According to reports from Libya, the son of the dead dictator is now with his relatives in the city of Al-Bayda, where he is expected to make a speech to the nation.
Saif, who studied at the London School of Economics, is the most high profile of Colonel Gaddafi’s eight children.
He was captured by rebels as he tried to flee to neighbouring Niger in November 2011 when Tripoli was taken by opposition fighters.
He was sentenced to death by a court in Tripoli two years ago and remains on the wanted list of the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
Colonel Gaddafi was captured and killed in October 2011 after he was found hiding near the city of Sirte.
Since then, Libya has struggled to establish a national government, with armed groups in the east and west challenging the Tripoli authority’s government.

Indiana canvassers charged with submitting fake voter applications
Twelve employees of a voter mobilization group in Indiana with Democratic ties were charged Friday with submitting fake or fraudulent voter registration applications, The Associated Press reports.
The Indiana Voter Registration Project, a group focused on registering and mobilizing black voters, allegedly submitted an unknown number of false voter applications in order to meet quotas, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Marion County prosecutor Terry Curry said the police investigation found no evidence of voter fraud or suppression and that the charges came from the “very bad, ill-advised business practice” of setting a quota for workers.
