  5. The video lends some ominous overtones to the cirrent strengthening of ties between China and Africa. Both are rampant polluters and tree-cutters. In fact, if the entire Western world (i.e., Europe and America) simply ceased to exist, China alone could single-handedly drive whatever anthropogenic component of The Great Warmening, all by its widdle lonesome.

    This is just one more reason why the other developed countries need to jam a stick in China’s spokes right away. The longer this is delayed, the more environmental damage and further midwifing of new rogue states (like North Korea) that is going to happen. More importantly, this needs to be done while China is still dependent upon its highly vulnerable export-based economy. If China is allowed to make the (however improbable) transition to internal consumption, all will be lost.

      NREL did an extensive study on this issue, and the conclusions are clear: solar panels release about 20 times less GHG, everything in, than you would get from burning enough coal to produce the same amount of power. It’s also lower than the amount of GHG you’d get from natural gas, wood, or practically any power source that uses fuel.

      It’s also common to mix arguments (see below for another example) and mention a chemical that’s used in one process without clearly stating that it’s not used in another. For instance, this post complains about the use of NF3 in terms of “solar panels”, without noting that NF3 is only used in a particular kind of panel which is not common. Moreover, hundreds of times that amount was used in the production of flat-panel TV’s, and in both cases its use has since been dramatically reduced, or eliminated outright. Any one of these points is important, but none of them are mentioned in these criticisms.

      Nitrogen trifluoride

      Nitrogen trifluoride is used in the plasma etching of silicon wafers. Today nitrogen trifluoride is predominantly employed in the cleaning of the PECVD chambers in the high-volume production of liquid-crystal displays and silicon-based thin-film solar cells. In these applications NF3 is initially broken down in situ by a plasma. The resulting fluorine atoms are the active cleaning agents that attack the polysilicon, silicon nitride and silicon oxide. Nitrogen trifluoride can be used as well with tungsten silicide, and tungsten produced by CVD. NF3 has been considered as an environmentally preferable substitute for sulfur hexafluoride or perfluorocarbons such as hexafluoroethane. The process utilization of the chemicals applied in plasma processes is typically below 20%. Therefore some of the PFCs and also some of the NF3 always escape into the atmosphere. Modern gas abatement systems can decrease such emissions.

        • You are most welcome. A solid contributor like you deserves the facts. So-called “clean energy” remains one of the planet’s biggest challenges. Everything, everything, has some sort of “footprint”.

          There is no such thing as “zero emission” anything.

          At one of my lectures on the history of renewable energy, a particularly fractious young lady was flabbergasted when I told her that a Tesla electric car has the same carbon footprint as a SUV before they are driven off of the showroom floor. As in, it is only after they are being operated, do their relative efficiencies begin to diverge.

          When she began to argue, I had to be grateful that the professor stepped in and confirmed my assertion. Even so, it was obvious that she could barely wrap her mind around the concept.
