Saudi Arabia’s ban on women driving is what often grabs the most attention, but rights advocates say guardianship laws are the factor that most powerfully enshrines inequality for women.

Saudi law is based on one of the most conservative interpretations of Islamic Shariah, and no other Muslim countries enforce such strict guardianship measures.
There have been some marginal improvements in women’s rights in the kingdom in recent years.
In a rare step to partially rein in guardianship, King Salman last week ordered government agencies to stop demanding guardians’ permission beyond the areas where the law actually requires it.

“On his first official trip outside Europe, new French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday highlighted his determination to crush extremism with a visit to French-led military forces combating jihadist groups in West Africa.
The terror threat in the region is “clearly a risk for Europe,” he said.
Macron was greeted by Malian counterpart Ibrahim Boubacar Keita at an air base in the eastern city of Gao, home to France’s largest overseas military operation. Macron vowed to maintain France’s military operations in Mali and “be intractable” with extremist groups in the region.
At a joint news conference with Keita, he also asked Germany to provide more support to French-led efforts to eradicate the extremists. Macron said he spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier this week about getting more logistical support and said Merkel backs the idea.
Keita expressed his gratitude toward France for its military intervention that began in 2013 after extremist groups overran the country’s vast northern region. The groups were quickly pushed from strongholds but remain a deadly threat.
“The road is long … but we are going forward and we will succeed,” Keita said.
Macron repeatedly pledged ahead of the May 7 election that fighting terror would be his priority, after multiple attacks in France since 2015 that killed more than 230 people.
Most of the West African extremist groups France is combating trace their origins to al-Qaida’s North Africa branch.
France’s Operation Barkhane has about 4,000 soldiers in Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. Gao is home of the permanent French military base in Mali, with 1,600 troops.
Gao is where a suicide attack on a Malian army camp killed more than 75 people in January. That attack, claimed by the al-Qaida-linked al-Mourabitoun extremist group, happened just days after former French president Francois Hollande visited the city.
The victims were soldiers and former fighters trying to stabilize the region after a 2015 agreement with the government. The attack was a major blow to peace efforts in northern Mali, where rival groups have been vying for control or outright independence.
“I don’t think Macron’s arrival will change anything to our daily life,” Ousmane Maiga, a resident of Gao, told The Associated Press. “Macron comes to see the French soldiers but not us.”
Another resident, Mohamed Gaiga, said he wants Macron “to put an end to the massacre of Malians. France has the military and political power to bring back peace in Mali, but we observe that even groups that signed the peace agreement are still fighting each other.””

Ultimately, he writes in the newspaper once known as “the old gray lady” and which has become “the old crazy lady,” he does not believe “our president sufficiently understands the nature of the office he holds, the nature of the legal constraints that are supposed to bind him, perhaps even the nature of normal human interactions, to be guilty of obstruction of justice in the Nixonian or even Clintonian sense of the phrase.”

Sweden today announced it has decided to drop its investigation in to rape allegations made against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in a move his lawyer described as a ‘total victory’.
The dramatic decision was revealed by Sweden’s top prosecutor, Marianne Ny, who said the probe had been ‘discontinued’ having effectively become a lost cause.
Assange, who denies the 2010 rape claims, has been living inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for almost five years and has been granted political asylum.
Sweden’s interest in his arrest has ended, but he is still wanted by the US and UK.
Met Police today confirmed there is a warrant for his arrest for not appearing in court in 2012, and that it was ‘obliged’ to execute the warrant if he leaves the embassy – but the importance of his case is now seen as ‘less serious’.
America wants to extradite the 45-year-old Australian to stand trial over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret military and diplomatic documents.

“A roadside bombing killed 11 people in eastern Afghanistan on Friday as they were traveling to a wedding in the country’s east, a local official said.
The attack came just hours after an Afghan policeman turned his rifle on his colleagues as they slept at an outpost in eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday night, killing five.
Those killed by the roadside bomb in Logar province — five women, five children and a man — were all from the same family, said Salim Salleh, the spokesman for the provincial governor of Logar.
In the Thursday night attack, district governor, Abdul Wahab Momand, said the policeman shot his colleagues at an outpost in the district of Ghanikhil.
After the shooting, the attacker, who was only identified by one name, Nasratullah, seized all the victims’ firearms and fled the scene, the governor said…”
ISIS Video Shows New Weapons, ‘American’ Urging Attacks in U.S.

ISIS has released a new video featuring a purportedly American fighter calling for attacks in the U.S. and footage of new weapons the terrorists have built, including drones and rovers, analysts said.
Using the handle Abu Hamza al-Amriki, the bearded man appears with his face uncovered and urges lone-wolf attacks to avenge U.S. military action in slightly accented English, according to security firm Flashpoint.
It’s been nearly a year since an American was featured in official ISIS propaganda. In June, a fighter using the nickname Abu Isma’il al-Amriki praised the Orlando nightclub massacre in another video. Jihadis use al-Amriki in their noms de guerre to mean “the American.”

In secret recording, Venezuelan general pushes for snipers to control demonstrators

Claiming to be primed for civil war, a Venezuelan general issued orders to prepare for the future use of snipers against anti-government protesters, according to a secret recording of a regional command meeting held three weeks ago at a military base in the northwestern Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto.
On the recording, obtained from a Washington source that has provided el Nuevo Herald with information on Venezuela for previous stories, the generals discuss the legality and risks of using snipers during the massive demonstrations taking place almost daily against President Nicolás Maduro.
The military, however, insists publicly that it is not using lethal force against demonstrators, a claim that was repeated on Wednesday by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez.
The meeting, chaired by Division General José Rafael Torrealba Pérez, took place in the last week of April as Venezuela’s socialist government continued to try to contain the unrest. Local news reports said at least four demonstrators were killed by gunfire this week, raising the death toll to at least 42, with more than 700 wounded.

Anthony Weiner to Plead Guilty to Resolve ‘Sexting’ Inquiry
Anthony D. Weiner, the former Democratic congressman whose “sexting” scandals ended his political career and embroiled him in a tumultuous F.B.I. investigation of Hillary Clinton before the election, is to appear in a federal courtroom in Manhattan on Friday to enter a guilty plea.
The information has not been made public but was related by two people who have been briefed on the matter and asked not to be identified.
Mr. Weiner will plead guilty to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor, pursuant to a plea agreement with the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan, one of the people said. Mr. Weiner surrendered to the F.B.I. early Friday morning.
The federal authorities have been investigating reports that, beginning in January 2016, Mr. Weiner, then 51, exchanged sexually explicit messages with a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina.

US Deploys Second Aircraft Carrier Toward Korean Peninsula
One month ago, when we first discussed that in addition to the CVN-70 Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group, the US was deploying two more carriers toward the Korean peninsula, some took the Yonhap-sourced report skeptically: after all, what’s the incremental symbolic impact of having two aircraft carriers next to North Korea when just one would more than suffice. Russia’s ‘Killer Satellites’ Re-Awaken
The trio of mysterious spacecraft were idle for at least a year. Now they’re zooming toward foreign satellites again—and no one really knows why.
A trio of mysterious Russian government satellites startled space experts when, shortly after blasting into low orbit between 2013 and 2015, they began dramatically changing their orbits, demonstrating a rare degree of maneuverability for small spacecraft.
Now after being idle for a year or more, two of the mystery-sats are on the move again. On April 20, 2017, one of them reportedly shaved hundreds of meters off its orbit in order to zoom within 1,200 meters of a big chunk of a defunct Chinese weather satellite that China smashed in a controversial 2007 test of an anti-satellite rocket.
By orbital standards, that’s pretty close.
The Russian spacecrafts’ impressive maneuvers have got observers scratching their heads. No one outside of the Russian government — and probably the U.S. military — seems to know for sure what the satellites are for.

What I assembled on ‘laptop ban intel’ in less than an hour, using web searches*

Prior to anonymous leakers from inside the U.S. federal government spilling their guts to the Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal this week, here’s what the public knew about the intelligence behind the laptop ban initially announced by U.S. authorities on 21 March 2017. (All links containing these pieces of information are listed at the end of this section.)
The public knew that the intelligence related to both ISIS and Al-Qaeda; namely, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which operates principally in Yemen.
The specific concerns about the use of laptops came from intelligence that the groups were involved in the following:
Developing explosives undetectable to airport scanners
Loading those undetectable explosives into laptops
Testing the explosives using actual airport scanners to which they had gained access (ISIS is specifically said to be doing this)

Former DOJ spokesman: Comey is trying to take down Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey may have been building a legal case against President Donald Trump well before the president fired him on May 9, according to a former Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson.
Matthew Miller, who served as the DOJ’s Director of the Office of Public Affairs under former Attorney General Eric Holder, suggested that Comey may have been building an obstruction of justice case against the president, in an interview with the Washington Post.
Miller’s suggestion carries weight not just because of his extensive background at DOJ and in government, but also because he predicted that Comey left a paper trail of his interactions with Trump. Miller sent the following tweet five days before the New York Times reported that Comey wrote a memo indicating the president had asked him to end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Oscar De La Rosa-Mendoza, 31, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, as well as resisting arrest from local police after they pulled him over, according to CBS 4 News.
This was not the first conviction for Rosa-Mendoza. Court records show that Rosa-Mendoza had been previously convicted of drunk driving, along with evading arrest and causing injuries to another person. Even worse, Rosa-Mendoza has been deported six times.

“European Union leaders plan to move forward with the creation of an EU military headquarters within the next few days – and warn that Britain may still be expected to take part, even after Brexit.
Plans to set up a joint Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC) facility, agreed by all 28 member states in March, had been stalled by British objections to the facility having an operational military role.
But speaking to reports in Brussels following a meeting of EU defence ministers on Thursday, the EU’s Foreign Affairs commissioner Federica Mogherini said the path was now clear, and plans would be progressed within the next few days.
“I understand it is finalised. I understand we have a couple of days to have the official text in place,” she said.
Britain has historically maintained opposition to an EU army, preferring instead to emphasise NATO over a possible joint European force. But quizzed on British involvement in light of Brexit, Mogherini made it clear that both sides expected the UK to play a full part in the plans until Brexit takes place, in 2019 – and possibly beyond.
“Obviously, once you are not a member state you cannot take part in the decisions but you can take part” in the missions, Mogherini said.
She added that the UK is an “important military player but no way as important compared to the other 27 member states [combined].”
A statement of conclusions agreed by the ministers and released by the Council of the EU yesterday stated that the Council “looks forward to the effective establishment, as a short term objective, of the Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC) within the EU Military Staff in Brussels.”
The MPCC will work “under the political control and strategic guidance of the Political and Security Committee, the document continues, and is expected to undertake “three EU Training Missions deployed in Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia” under the guidance of the “Director General of the EU Military Staff.”
The document also reiterates the Council’s commitment to the strengthening of “EU Battlegroups (EUBGs)”, which, it says “are considered to be a coherent force package capable of conducting stand-alone operations.””
This removes control of the national military forces from the individual nations and gives the EU bureaucracy to move them around where the EU Deep State wants them. I don’t think the civil wars will hold off long enough for the EU to gain control enough to use one nations military in another nation without the entire population of the second nation rebelling but that is the eventual goal.

Mohammed Amin, 50; Abdul Qayyum, 49; Hamid Safi, 27; Adil Khan, 47; Abdul Rauf, 48; Abdul Aziz, 46; and Kabeer Hassan, 30, have all completed short sentences of five years or less, or been released on license halfway through longer sentences – as is standard since Labour passed the Criminal Justice Act 2003.

“British historian and broadcaster Tom Holland’s latest documentary, ‘ISIS: The Origins of Violence’, has angered leading Muslim organisations.
Prior to its broadcast on May 17th, Holland said the question his Channel 4 documentary sought to answer was “basically this: just how Islamic are the Islamic State?”
The bestselling author courted controversy in 2014 when he wrote that “The grim truth is that sanctions can be found in the Qur’an, in the biographies of Mohammad and in the histories of early Islam for much that strikes the outside world as most horrific about the Islamic State”.
The documentary begins in Paris at the site of the Bataclan massacre, where 89 people were tortured and killed.
It then wends its way eastward, past Vienna – “Muslim armies came this far twice,” Holland reminds the viewer, pointing out a town “where they massacred everyone” – to Istanbul.
The historian suggests that the idea of jihad as holy war first took hold in the Islamic world after the Arabs failed in their first attempt to conquer the city, then known as Constantinople.
He describes how these first invaders were elevated to the status of martyrs, visiting a shrine established to honour one of them after it fell to the Turks in 1453.
Istanbul was the seat of the caliphs, who served as the Prophet’s direct successors, for hundreds of years under the Ottoman sultans – until the empire was defeated by Britain and her allies during the Great War, and overthrown by the Turkish nationalist Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
“I have no religion, and at times I wish all religions at the bottom of the sea,” he once said. “My people are going to learn the principles of democracy, the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. ”
Atatürk, although best known in the West for his persecutions of the Armenians, also implemented a series of aggressively secular policies designed to confine Islam to private life, and abolished the caliphate.
But the idea survived in the Arab world, Holland claims, inspiring Osama bin Laden and, ultimately, the foundation of the present-day caliphate under Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Holland visits an ancient Christian monastery in northern Iraq, just miles from the borders of the Islamic State, occupied by a bare handful of monks and priests who tell them their faith has no future in the area, but they remain out of a sense of duty.
Holland contrasts the Christian monastic tradition with that advocated by the Prophet: “Our monasticism is jihad in the cause of God. Our monasticism is the crying of ‘Allahu Akbar!’ on hilltops.”
The historian explores the plight of the Yazidis, visiting the shattered city of Sinjar and the holy shrine at Lalish, in the Kurdish mountains.
He describes how, unlike the Christians and Jews whose status as “People of the Book” can allow them to survive under Islamic rule as second-class citizens, provided they pay a special tax called the jizya, the Yazidis are exposed to slavery, forced conversion or death.
Speaking to Abu Sayyaf, a Salafi cleric and leader of the Jordanian Jihadi Salafist Movement, Holland is told that shariah does not allow for the Yazidis to live under the jizya.
“The same rules do not apply to the Mushrikun,” he states. “No jizya. Nothing. Either Islam or death.”
Shiraz Maher, a senior research fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King’s College London, tells Holland that the Islamists perpetrating acts of violence do indeed “regard themselves as doing God’s work”.
He explains that “Beheadings, crucifixions, these are all things that are discussed within the context of the Islamic punishment system … Islamic State would say that they are implementing these punishments as they’ve understood them from the texts”.
Holland and Maher agree that the “vast majority” of Muslims would regard the group’s actions as “monstrous” – but Maher also agrees that the idea of Islam being destined to conquer the world “has always been present within a strain of Islamic thought”.
The documentary angered a number of British Muslims, in particular the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPACUK).
The MPACUK, a verified organisation which describes itself as “the UK’s leading org for empowering Muslims to focus on intelligent political activism to demand our rights”, took particular issue with the fact that Holland had consulted Israeli experts for the programme.
Holland appeared unmoved, however, and accused the group of harbouring anti-Semitic attitudes.
“Honestly, Britain’s Muslims deserve so much better than to have sinister clowns like MPACUK claim to represent them,” he said.”

Comey was ‘disgusted’ by hug with Trump
A friend of James Comey said Thursday that the former FBI director was “disgusted” when President Trump hugged him at a White House event earlier this year, calling it an “intentional attempt to compromise [Comey] in public.”
Brookings Institution fellow Benjamin Wittes, a close friend of Comey, recounted the incident on PBS “NewsHour” Thursday. According to Wittes, Comey was “disgusted” when Trump gave Comey a hug during a White House visit for a ceremony honoring law enforcement officials that worked Trump’s inauguration.
Wittes said Comey “really did not want to go to that meeting” and tried to distance himself from Trump to ensure the FBI’s independence from the White House. Comey, who is 6 feet 8 inches tall, was wearing a dark blue suit and stood near the similarly colored curtains in the back of the room, hoping that Trump would not spot him.
Trump did end up calling out Comey.
“Right at the end, Trump singles [Comey] out in a fashion that [Comey] regarded as sort of calculated,” Wittes said. “Trump grabs the hand and kind of pulls [Comey] into the hug, but the hug is entirely one-sided. Comey was just completely disgusted by the episode.”

The verdicts came in the trial in Amsterdam of 21 people accused of targeting Sylvana Simons, who is a former dancer and television presenter of Surinamese descent, with a torrent of online racist abuse last year. One person was acquitted.
The court said in a statement that the heaviest sentence, 80 hours of community service, went to a man who superimposed the head of Simons on video images of a Ku Klux Klan lynching. Others were given shorter work orders or fines.
“Many people saw the video and were confronted with discriminatory images of people with dark skin,” the court said.

The group drove a rental truck toward the building, narrowly missing an official. People then took a 10-meter (32-foot) ladder and tried to climb onto the roof of the ministry, while throwing pyrotechnics, a police spokesperson told national daily Welt.
“They were driving with a truck, with a big ladder on it and wanted to enter the ministry,” an eyewitness told the paper.
Earlier, an unannounced demonstration called for Justice Minister Heiko Maas to step down and for the borders of the European Union to be strengthened, with some participants wearing uniforms in the style of the former East Germany’s People’s Police.

A government task force created to promote the integration of migrants into German society has published a list of the core features of German culture.
The list studiously omits politically incorrect terms such as “patriotism” and “leading culture” (Leitkultur), and effectively reduces German traditions and values to the lowest common denominator. The task force, in fact, implicitly establishes multiculturalism as the most complete expression of German culture.
The so-called Cultural Integration Initiative (Initiative kulturelle Integration) was created by the German government in December 2016 to promote “social cohesion” after Chancellor Angela Merkel opened German borders to more than a million migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
The task force — led by the German Cultural Council (Deutscher Kulturrat) in close cooperation with the German Interior Ministry and two dozen media, religious and other interest groups — was charged with reaching a consensus on what constitutes German culture. The original aim was to facilitate “cultural integration” by encouraging migrants to assimilate to a shared set of cultural values.
After five months of deliberation, the task force on May 16 presented a list of what it considers to be the top 15 guiding principles of German culture. Encapsulated in the catchphrase “Cohesion in Diversity,” the list consists of mostly generic ideas about German culture — gender equality, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, pluralism and democracy — that are not at all unique to Germany.

Insieme al collega Gavin McInnes, la Southern intrattenne il pubblico della destra statunitense al MLK Park leggendo un estratto del discorso che avrebbe dovuto tenere la Coulter nell’Ateneo “progressista”. “Possono essere in grado di impedirci di parlare al campus – disse – potrebbero essere in grado di lanciare pugni, di spruzzarci spray al peperoncino, di buttarci contro mattoni, ma non possono fermare un’idea”. Over the past few days, campus incidents illustrating leftist intolerance and brutality have peppered the news. At the same time, The Washington Post (actual motto: “Democracy Dies in Darkness”) is living up to its growing “fake news” reputation.
First, the colleges. At Bethune-Cookman University’s commencement last week, U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was booed throughout her address and many graduates turned their backs on her. Apparently, free speech and good manners are not part of the academic experience at the historic black college in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Mrs. DeVos’ main crime is that she’s part of the hated Trump administration. That’s enough to trigger the heckler’s veto.
Since the 1960s, colleges have been in the grip of leftism, which is distinguished from liberalism by its predictable Marxist cant and taste for violence. Disagreement is “hate speech.”
