“Saudi Arabia is using draconian anti-terror laws to jail regime opponents according to the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights.
British lawyer Ben Emmerson concluded from his visit of suspcted cases of torture and that activists were being jailed by secret, closed door courts.
Emmerson conducted an investigation into the kingdom’s 2014 counter-terrorism law saying it contains an “unacceptably broad definition” of what is terrorism is.
This had allowed for peaceful human rights campaigners to be jailed under the laws with the special rapporteur to the UN’s high commissioner on human rights saying the legislation does not comply with international law.
“I strongly condemn the use of counter-terrorism legislation and penal sanctions against individuals peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression,” he told reporters in the kingdom.
Free speech
He said there should be an urgent review of all free speech defenders held under these laws or an immediate pardon for the detainees.
Emmerson said he had a list of nine “priority cases” which a UN group in 2015 said had been arbitrarily detained for exercising their rights to free speech and peaceful association.
These include Saudi blogger Raif Badawi and human rights lawyer Walid Albukhair.
“I am profoundly concerned” that they remain in detention, he said.
The British lawyer said attempts to interview these detainees were blocked by the government.
Most worryingly, he also alleged that torture had been used by law enforcement officials to “extract confessions”.
Secret trials had been held at a special court which handles terrorism cases without lawyers present.
Saudi Arabia denied the torture allegations, Emmerson said.
Prolific executioner
Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s most prolific executioners and some put to the sword included detainees convicted of terrorism.
Amnesty International reported that 156 people were put to death in Saudi Arabia last year.
On New Year’s Day in 2016, Saudi Arabia carried out a mass execution of 47 people – including leading Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr – some sentenced to death on charges of terrorism.
Human rights groups said among those beheaded were political activists.
Emmerson reported “multiple due process violations” in one death penalty case, and said there may be other cases.
Yet he said standards of care at the kingdom’s prisons for terrorist suspects “are amongst the highest in the world”.
The kingdom can also be proud of its rehabilitation of terrorist suspects, added Emmerson, with a team of military experts.
War in Yemen
The lawyer also reviewed Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the war against Yemeni rebels.
Saudi Arabia has conducted air strikes on areas controlled by Houthi and its allies in Yemen, but Emerson noted that some had led to civilian casualties and these must be investigated.
Emmerson reminded Saudi Arabia that it has an international legal obligation to conduct a probe “independent of the chain of command” when civilians are killed or injured in strikes and “the true civilian death toll made public”.
Emmerson said Riyadh had made a significant contribution to the US-led air coalition against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
“However, I am concerned at allegations that some of the most violent armed groups involved in jihad which have committed serious human rights violations [in Syria],” he said.
“[They] appear to have enjoyed various forms of support, financial and logistical, implicating sources inside Saudi Arabia.”
He did not elaborate on which jihadi groups he was referring to but said the allegations come despite Riyadh’s stated commitment to stem terrorist violence.
Saudi Arabia have been accused of supporting Salafi-inspired rebel group Jaish al-Islam, which operates in the Damascus suburbs.”

Exclusive – Paris Generation Identitaire Leader: ‘This is the Last Election We Have’ to Make Powerful Solutions for France’s Future
PARIS, France – Paris Génération Identitaire leader Pierre Larti gave a rare exclusive interview with Breitbart London saying harassment towards ethnic French by migrants is now commonplace in parts of Paris and the problem will only get worse if Macron wins.
In a small cafe in Paris’s 13th district, leader of the Paris branch of Génération Identitaire (GI), the French anti-mass migration Identitarian youth movement founded in 2012 who protest mass-migration and Islamisation, told Breitbart London his personal life has shaped his political leanings.
He said he and his brother were constantly harassed by men of foreign backgrounds simply for being French.
“Sometimes there was violence, I was beaten because I was the only French on public transport or on the streets,” explained Mr. Larti.
Larti then described one incident in which he and his brother had a knife held to their throat by a man and robbed for no other reason than their ethnicity.
According to the GI Paris chief, those types of experiences have become increasingly common for young people living in suburbs in the north of Paris. Women, in particular, he said, were targets for foreign-born men. “The conditions for women in France are terrible now. If you are a blonde woman in the north of Paris I wouldn’t give you five minutes without being harassed.”
The worsening conditions for women, along with the Cologne sex attacks in 2015, have brought many women into the movement, Larti said.
“You don’t feel [like you are] in your country anymore,” he said adding, “We have the right to live in our country with our values.”
“In some areas of France, you have no more French natives. It’s finished you know?”
Anti-mass migration presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has advocated closing the borders and deporting known Islamic radicals, something that Larti supports, but believes does not go far enough to tackle the problems facing France.
Larti said that he would like to see an eventual repatriation of those who refuse to accept French values which he claimed the government was working to systematically destroy.
On the subject of the European Union, the GI leader said he was not against the EU as a concept, but was against the leadership of the political bloc. “In my point of view, the European countries are very united now. Not because of the EU, but because of mass immigration which is a threat to our life as a country, as a nation,” he said.
Aside from large, often spectacular protests, the group also engages in charity work during the winter months, in what they call “Solidarity Generation”, by helping homeless Europeans in France. Larti said many of the native French homeless are afraid of going to shelters full of migrants because they are often subjected to violence and so end up on the street with no one else to help them.
Looking forward to Sunday’s election between Ms. Le Pen and her globalist rival Emmanuel Macron, Larti said he feared things will only get worse if Macron wins.
“I still believe in political solutions, but for how long? I don’t know, to be honest. If Emmanuel Macron wins the election, I am not sure. This is my personal opinion – not of the organisation – [but] for me, this is maybe the last election that we have.” He noted terrorist attacks have dramatically escalated since the election of François Hollande five years ago.
“If Emmanuel Macron doesn’t take any, or maybe Marine Le Pen, any powerful solutions, I don’t believe that we can organise elections in the next five years,” he said.
Larti’s view is similar to French Islamic scholar Gilles Kepel who has predicted that radical Islamists could lead Europe into a potential civil war.

Leading French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron’s campaign said on Friday it had been the target of a “massive” computer hack that dumped its campaign emails online 1-1/2 days before voters choose between the centrist and his far-right rival Marine Le Pen.
Macron, who extended his lead in the polls over Le Pen on Friday, is seen as the frontrunner in an election billed as the most important in France in decades.
Some nine gigabytes of data were posted by a user called EMLEAKS to Pastebin, a document-sharing site that allows anonymous posting. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for posting the data or if any of it was genuine.
In a statement, Macron’s political movement En Marche! (Onwards!) confirmed that it had been hacked.
“The En Marche! Movement has been the victim of a massive and co-ordinated hack this evening which has given rise to the diffusion on social media of various internal information,” the statement said.
An interior ministry official declined to comment, citing French rules that forbid any commentary liable to influence an election, and which took effect at midnight on Friday (2200 GMT).
The French presidential election commission said in statement that it would hold a meeting later on Saturday after Macron’s campaign informed it about the hack and publishing of the data.

In an interview with The Associated Press in the final hours of a hostile, topsy-turvy campaign, Le Pen said that win or lose, “we changed everything.” She claimed an “ideological victory” for her populist, anti-immigrant worldview in an election that could change Europe’s direction.
Macron’s political movement said late Friday night it has been the victim of a “massive and coordinated” hacking attack that led to the leak of campaign emails and financial documents.
In a statement, the En Marche movement said it was hacked a few weeks ago, and that the leaked documents have been mixed with false documents to “seed doubt and disinformation” and destabilize Sunday’s presidential runoff. Hillary Clinton’s U.S. presidential campaign suffered similar leaks, and also said that authentic documents were mixed with false documents.
Fears of hacking, fake news manipulation and Russian meddling clouded the French campaign but had largely gone unrealized — until Friday’s admission by Macron’s campaign that it had suffered an online pirate attack.

France’s presidential voting watchdog called on the Interior Ministry late Friday to look into claims by the Le Pen campaign that ballot papers are being tampered with nationwide to benefit Macron. The Le Pen campaign said electoral administrators in several regions who receive ballot papers for both candidates have found the Le Pen ballot “systematically torn up.”
Earlier in the day, anti-Le Pen crowds disrupted her visit to a renowned cathedral in Reims.
The presidential campaign has been unusually bitter, with voters hurling eggs and flour, protesters clashing with police and candidates insulting each other on national television — a reflection of the widespread public disaffection with politics as usual.
Le Pen, 48, has brought her far-right National Front party, once a pariah for its racism and anti-Semitism, closer than ever to the French presidency, seizing on working-class voters’ growing frustration with globalization and immigration. Even if she loses, she is likely to be a powerful opposition figure in French politics in the upcoming parliamentary election campaign.
“Even if we don’t reach our goal, in any event there is a gigantic political force that is born,” she told AP in her campaign headquarters. Her party “imposed the overhaul” of French politics and set the tone of the election, she said.
FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL CHOICE: RISK LE PEN OR SETTLE FOR MACRON
The 39-year-old Macron, too, played a key role in upending France’s traditional political structure with his wild-card campaign.
Voters liked the idea, and chose Macron and Le Pen in the first-round vote, dumping the traditional left and right parties that have governed modern France. Le Pen said those parties have been “blackballed.”
Many voters, however, don’t like either Le Pen or Macron. They fear her party’s racist past, while worrying that his platform would demolish worker job protections or be too much like his mentor, the deeply unpopular outgoing President Francois Hollande.
Students protested both presidential candidates Friday by blocking high schools and marching through Paris.
Le Pen, who was pelted with eggs Thursday in Brittany, was met by hecklers Friday at the Reims cathedral. She left via an unmarked door, putting her arms over her head as if to protect herself and diving into a black car.
Le Pen denounced her critics for disrupting a sacred place during her final campaign stop. The site has special meaning for her National Front party because it’s the cathedral where Charles VII was crowned in the presence of Joan of Arc — the party’s icon — at a time of war and division.
In the AP interview, Le Pen said she was confident she can bring the divided country together if elected.
“Yes. I want most of all to put democracy back in place … we must re-weave the links among people.” She said.
Macron would worsen divisions, she claimed.
The pro-business Macron, who topped all vote-getters in the first-round, also has been booed and heckled frequently as he visited blue-collar workers.
Violent protests erupted in Paris earlier this week against both candidates, with several police officers injured. And critics decried the bitter tone of Wednesday night’s presidential debate.
Le Pen acknowledged to AP that she became angry at the debate but said she was merely channeling the mood of France.
Macron acknowledged that the French are exasperated by the government’s ineffectiveness, but he dismissed Le Pen’s vision of an infuriated country.
She “speaks for no one. … Madame Le Pen exploits anger and hatred,” Macron told RTL radio.
The unprecedented negativity in one of the most unpredictable and scandal-hit French presidential campaigns in recent times has turned off countless voters.
About 100 students pulled garbage bins in front of the entrance to the Lycee Colbert in northeastern Paris, with cardboard signs saying, “Neither Le Pen nor Macron, neither the fatherland nor the boss,” — a reference to Le Pen’s nationalist views and Macron’s pro-business ties.
Students at another school, Lycee Buffon, wrote an open letter calling on the French to exercise their vote and recalling the fate of five students shot in 1943 for fighting the Nazis. Astana (Kazakhstan) (AFP) – Russia, Iran and Turkey on Thursday signed an agreement on setting up four safe zones in Syria that the United Nations described as a promising step to wind down the brutal six-year war.
The United States however gave an extremely cautious welcome, citing concerns over Iran’s role as a guarantor, even as it expressed hope that the deal could set the stage for a settlement.
Several members of the rebel delegation left the room shouting in protest as the signing ceremony got underway in the Kazakh capital Astana, angry at regime ally Iran, an AFP reporter saw.
The plan for the “de-escalation areas” was discussed on Tuesday by US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation.
The agreement provides for a ceasefire, a ban on all flights, rapid deliveries of humanitarian aid to the designated areas and the return of refugees.

I don’t know what Russia is going to do in Korea but they are trying to draw our attention away from Korea and back to the Middle East. China says making air force drills more realistic
BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s air force is making its drills more realistic and less formulaic as it seeks to boost combat readiness, an official newspaper said on Friday, mapping out the latest step in the country’s ambitious modernization program.
China has rattled nerves around the region with its plan to reform the military, the world’s largest, focusing on quality over quantity and replacing outmoded equipment and tactics dating back to Soviet times.
Its air force has been a big beneficiary of the modernization, getting new jets and developing stealth technologies, and is also focusing on improving its training.
Combat exercises are becoming more intense and more difficult, ditching past practice of carrying out drills in line with pre-set plans and adding more realistic situations, the state-run China Daily said, citing the air force.
“Commanders and pilots have been given stringent, realistic combat scenarios and are told to try their best to win,” the paper said.

UAE to DRAG ICEBERG from Antarctica to solve water shortage set to last 25 years
THE United Arab Emirates (UAE) in planning to TOW icebergs from Antarctica to its coast in order to help with drinking water issues.
The scorching Middle Eastern country, and much of the transcontinental region, is in the midst of a drought with some studies suggesting a water shortage could last for the next 25 years.
The UAE, which is among the top 10 water-scarce countries in the world, hopes to help ease the stress of a drinking water shortage by towing an iceberg from the freezing Antarctica in order to create more drinking water.
The National Advisor Bureau Limited’s (NABL) managing Director Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi says an average iceberg contains “more than 20 billion gallons of water” which would be enough for one million people over five years.
Up to four-fifths of an iceberg’s mass is underwater, and due to their vast density, they would theoretically not melt in the boiling climate of the Middle Eastern coastal line.

North Korea accuses CIA of ‘bio-chemical’ plot against leadership
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea on Friday accused the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and South Korea’s intelligence service of a plot to attack its “supreme leadership” with a bio-chemical weapon and said such a “pipe-dream” could never succeed.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has been high for weeks, driven by concern that North Korea might conduct its sixth nuclear test or test-launch another ballistic missile in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
Reclusive North Korea warned this week that U.S. hostility had brought the region to the brink of nuclear war.
The North’s Ministry of State Security released a statement saying “the last-ditch effort” of U.S. “imperialists” and the South had gone “beyond the limits”.

This week, it has finally burbled out to the general public’s notice that Fusion GPS, the opposition research group that reportedly commissioned the infamous “Trump dossier” from a retired British MI6 operative, is being investigated by Congress because it was apparently working for Russian government interests at the same time.
At the moment, suggestions that the Russians in question were “behind” the commissioning of the Trump dossier appear to be overblown. If evidence to that effect turns up, we can “go there” when it does. (At the very least, however, the Russian connections to Fusion would explain how the Russian government would have had full prior knowledge that an American oppo research group was looking for dirt on Trump — in Russia.)
For now, what we do know is that Fusion GPS, which has a decidedly un-illustrious history in terms of its clientele (including the usual Hillary drive-by and gratuitous computer hacking), was hired by a pair of Russians who sought Fusion’s investigative services in lobbying against the 2015 Magnitsky Act.

Muslim Brotherhood in Desperate Campaign in US
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is mounting a desperate campaign in the U.S. to avoid being designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, according to The Seventh Day, one of Egypt’s largest news outlets.
The political winds have changed in Washington and the Brotherhood is running scared. U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear his support of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, announcing he stands with the Egyptian president in his fight against terror and extremist groups that are threatening one of America’skey allies in the Middle East.
After tens of millions of Egyptians took to the streets to protest the abuse and power grabs of former Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi (a member of the Brotherhood’s political party) in the summer of 2013, El-Sisi and the military took control of Egypt. He was elected president in 2014.
El-Sisi’s recently successful meeting with Trump in Washington set a Brotherhood plan in motion to gain support of members of Congress and academia to block a move to designate the organization as terrorists.

Middle Eastern Men Say We Want to Control Women
Even though men in the Middle East clearly believe in a patriarchal system with limited equality for women, the system isn’t working so well for them, according to the results of a survey of 10,000 people across Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and the Palestinian territories.
“There is the perception about the Arab region that the patriarchy clearly dominates and that it is fantastic for men,” said Shereen El Feki, who led the study, speaking to the BBC.
Depending on the location, between 20-50 percent of men indicated that they were ashamed to face their families due to lack of money.
El Feki said that the survey report suggested that “the patriarchy works for the very small minority who are on the top of that pyramid. For the rest down below, lots of women, but also from the results of the survey, many, many men, life is very tough.”
Unsurprisingly, the majority of men – up to 90 percent in some locations – expected to have the right to control their wives’ freedoms, from what she wears to how often they have sex.
A quarter of the men surveyed indicated that they did accept equality for women in some areas but believe that a woman’s primary role is in the home.

The European Union has called on its member states to lift border controls — introduced at the height of the migration crisis in September 2015 — within the next six months.
The return to open borders, which would allow for passport-free travel across the EU, comes at a time when the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean continues to rise, and when Turkish authorities increasingly have been threatening to renege on a border deal that has lessened the flow of migrants from Turkey to Europe.
Critics say that lifting the border controls now could trigger another, even greater, migration crisis by encouraging potentially millions of new migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East to begin making their way to Europe. It would also allow jihadists to cross European borders undetected to carry out attacks when and where they wish.
At a press conference in Brussels on May 2, the EU Commissioner in charge of migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, called on Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden — among the wealthiest and most sought after destinations in Europe for migrants — to phase out the temporary controls currently in place at their internal Schengen borders over the next six months.
The so-called Schengen Agreement, which took effect in March 1995, abolished many of the EU’s internal borders, enabling passport-free movement across most of the bloc. The Schengen Agreement, along with the single European currency, are fundamental pillars of the European Union and essential building-blocks for constructing a United States of Europe. With the long-term sustainability of the single currency and open borders in question, advocates of European federalism are keen to preserve both.

“A new report from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has found that food insecurity is accelerating global migration and armed conflict as millions across the globe are facing starvation and fleeing their homes.
The study is the first of its kind to comprehensively analyze the link between food insecurity and migration, according to the WFP. It employed quantitative and qualitative research methods while convening focus group discussions with migrants in Greece, Italy, Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon.
The migrants were from 10 different countries across East Africa, West Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The largest numbers of participants were from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Syria, and The Gambia.
“Such discussions provided first-hand accounts regarding the decision-making process to leave, and provided valuable information on the situation in countries of origin, the triggers for migration, routes taken and future intentions…” the report states.
According to the organization’s findings, almost two percent of people are forced to migrate with “each one percentage increase in food insecurity in a population.”
That, in return, would see a country which is experiencing “rising levels of food insecurity and conflict will experience greater outward migration, or movement of people away from their homes,” the WFP wrote in a press release.
Food insecurity is an ongoing cycle for many who choose to migrate, with the WFP noting that once a migrant’s journey has begun, they are faced with lack of employment and little to no access to food and other humanitarian assistance. Thus, they feel compelled to continue to move on.
“As people seek to reduce their food insecurity through migration, the act of migration itself can cause food insecurity, given the costs and often hazardous conditions along the journey,” the WFP said.
The organization also found that food insecurity is a major cause for the occurrence – and intensity – of armed conflict.
“Food insecurity is one of the most important and significant determinants of the incidences of armed conflict. In other words, higher levels of undernourishment contribute to the occurrence and intensity of armed conflict,” the report states…”

Poupart had said in a statement Thursday that Canada was “seriously concerned” by the amendments seen targeting Central European University, founded by George Soros in 1991 and accredited in Hungary and New York state.
Poupart said Canada “encourages a constructive dialogue” to solve the matter.
Hungary says CEU is cheating by issuing Hungarian and American diplomas, giving it an unfair advantage over other local universities.

While testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, FBI Director James Comey revealed that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, forwarded thousands of emails, including classified information, to her husband, Anthony Weiner.
On MSNBC on Thursday morning, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called for a special prosecutor to investigate if Abedin committed a crime by forwarding the classified material.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka abruptly changed tack in his battle to remove Finance Minister Andrej Babis on Friday, taking back a pledge to resign and instead seeking only the dismissal of his main political rival.
The country is in political crisis over Babis, a billionaire who faces questions over past business practices but is also the most popular party leader before an election due in October.

The UK government has secretly drawn up more details of its new bulk surveillance powers – awarding itself the ability to monitor Brits’ live communications, and insert encryption backdoors by the backdoor.
In its draft technical capability notices paper [PDF], all communications companies – including phone networks and ISPs – will be obliged to provide real-time access to the full content of any named individual within one working day, as well as any “secondary data” relating to that person.
That includes encrypted content – which means that UK organizations will not be allowed to introduce true end-to-end encryption of their users’ data but will be legally required to introduce a backdoor to their systems so the authorities can read any and all communications.

Iraqi forces pushed further into Mosul from the north on the second day of a new push to speed up the nearly seven-month attempt to dislodge Islamic State, commanders said on Friday.
Islamic State tried to block the troops’ northerly advance into their de facto Iraqi capital with suicide car bombs and sniper fire, Brigadier General Walid Khalifa, deputy commander of the 9th brigade, told Reuters in Hulayla, west of Musherfa.
His troops had killed about 30 militants, destroyed five car bombs before they could be used against them, he said.

Earlier this week at UC Berkeley, an angry young woman named Sunsara Taylor – a self-proclaimed revolutionary communist with a face contorted into a perpetual grimace and a voice modulated as a perpetual harangue – led a discussion event titled “Battle for Berkeley: Why It’s Right and Righteous to Drive Fascists Off Campus, and Out of Power.” Ms. Taylor’s position is simple: Fascists should be prevented from speaking at Berkeley and poisoning the minds of impressionable young scholars.
In case you’re wondering, “fascists,” by Taylor’s reckoning, include anyone who happens to hold conservative values – i.e., anyone who believes in individual rights, the color-blind rule of law, limited government, free enterprise, and the free and open exchange of ideas. Such values are anathema to Sunsara Taylor and her fellow revolutionary communists, who instead favor group rights, identity politics, perpetual interracial grievance, the flouting of laws that don’t conform to their own political preferences (like immigration laws), bloated government that intrudes upon every facet of individual life, a socialist economy, and raging intolerance for anyone who holds an opposing political view.
Last November – shortly after the presidential election in which Donald Trump defeated the woman who had feloniously violated the Espionage Act more often than all other political candidates in American history, combined – Sunsara Taylor and two other Revolutionary Communist Party members co-founded an organization called Refuse Fascism. This wek’s event at Berkeley was part of Refuse Fascism’s “Drive Them Out” campaign.
If you were to ask Refuse Fascism to define fascism, you wouldn’t get a very clear answer. Under the heading “What Is Fascism?” on the organization’s website, for example, no operational definition of the term can be found. The only thing you learn is that President Trump – “the Fascist in Chief” – and his “fascist regime” are the living embodiments of fascism: “The Trump/Pence Regime – the whole thing – every cabinet post, every executive order, every tweet is a link in the chain of a fascist government and worldview …”

As you know, Dartmouth has appointed N. Bruce Duthu as its new Dean of the Faculty. What you may not know is that Professor Duthu is an active advocate of the BDS movement, a movement that proposes boycotting, divesting and sanctioning Israeli academic institutions. As the Treasurer of the Council of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA), Professor Duthu coauthored a statement in support of the boycott of Israeli academic institutions as follows: “The NAISA Council encourages NAISA members to boycott Israeli academic institutions because they are imbricated with the Israeli state and we wish to place pressure on that state to change its policies.” The document our presumptive Dean coauthored can be found at http://www.naisa.org/ (scroll down to “NAISA Council Declaration of Support for the Boycott of Israeli Academic Institutions”).
In advocating the boycott of Israeli academic institutions, BDS is anti-Semitic. The chant of the BDS movement, from the river to the sea, is anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and profoundly anti- Jewish. It refers to sweeping the Jews out of Israel. Where else do we find movements advocating action against the academic institutions in any country but Israel, including many truly bad actors in the world? BDS is singling out Israel – the one country in the world that has a majority Jewish population. Indeed, this movement has become a cover for many anti-Semites who like nothing better than to once again be free to exercise their prejudices. It also is important to understand, especially when evaluating the significance of appointing a BDS advocate as the Dean of the Faculty, that BDS is not just a statement of beliefs or a philosophical movement: it is a statement of action.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken of reinstating capital punishment — a move that would effectively end Ankara’s faltering bid to join the European Union — since he narrowly won expanded powers last month.
