“FIGHTING and a huge blaze has broken out at a camp which is home to more than 1,500 migrants, according to local reports.
The Grande-Synthe migrant camp – just a 30 minute drive from Calais – in the early evening and is still raging, according to Le Parisien.
A reported clash between Afghans and Kurds erupted, which has left 10 migrants injured.
At least four of the migrants were rushed to the Dunkirk hospital, with three being treated for stab wounds.
Police in riot gear have fired at least 21 tear gas canisters in a bid to break up the melee in the refugee camp in Dunkirk.
The prefect of France’s Nord region, Michel Lalande, said: “There is nothing left but a heap of ashes.
“It will be impossible to put the huts back where they were before.”
The fighting among the migrants is believed to have started before the fire broke out.
Local officials claim around 20 huts, each which house at least four people, are believed to have been singed as firefighters remain at the scene.
The cloud of smoke from the fire could be seen from several miles away…”

“NORTHERN European nations need to cough up more money and agree to a “comprehensive” immigration policy to combat the growing migrant crisis from Africa, a group of southern EU nations have demanded.
Leaders from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta have begged on their northern European counterparts to help carry the burden following a meeting in Madrid – claiming that the Mediterranean Sea is “under extreme migratory pressure”.

“South Asian migrants working in the multi-billion dollar construction industry in Arab Gulf countries are shouldering the costs of their own recruitment fees while companies and their clients are reaping the benefits from inexpensive labor, according to a study released Tuesday.
The research by New York University’s Stern Center for Business and Human Rights found that workers spend an average of 10 to 18 months’ worth of salary paying off the fees that help facilitate their migration.
A slide in oil prices has slowed down the pace of construction in the Gulf and impacted governments’ abilities to pay for major infrastructure costs, but there is still strong demand for millions of low-wage construction workers. Qatar is investing heavily in the construction of stadiums for the 2022 World Cup it will host. Dubai is also building up a vast desert area that will be the site of the 2020 World Expo.
In order to reduce the cost of labor on mega projects, a weakly controlled system for recruitment is passing on the costs to the workers themselves, says the study.
Workers from Bangladesh are paying the highest fees in the world. Bangladeshis earning just a few hundred dollars a month in the Gulf are paying recruitment fees ranging from around $1,700 and $5,200. Indian migrants are paying an average of between $1,000 and $3,000.

Exclusive: North Korean ships head home after China orders coal returned
A fleet of North Korean cargo ships is heading home to the port of Nampo, the majority of it fully laden, after China ordered its trading companies to return coal from the isolated country, shipping data shows.
Following repeated missile tests that drew international criticism, China banned all imports of North Korean coal on Feb. 26, cutting off the country’s most important export product.
To curb coal traffic between the two countries, China’s customs department issued an official order on April 7 telling trading companies to return their North Korean coal cargoes, said three trading sources with direct knowledge of the order.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were discussing North Korea at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort on April 7.
Shipping data on Thomson Reuters Eikon, a financial information and analytics platform, shows a dozen cargo ships on their way to North Korea’s main west coast port of Nampo, almost all carrying cargoes from China.
Chinese authorities did not respond to requests for official comment.
The Trump administration has been pressuring China to do more to rein in North Korea, which sends the vast majority of its exports to its giant neighbor across the Yellow Sea.
But U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said last week’s U.S. military strike against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons was a warning to other countries, including North Korea, that “a response is likely” if they pose a danger.
As a U.S. Navy strike group headed to the region in a show of force, China and South Korea agreed on Monday to slap tougher sanctions on North Korea if it carries out nuclear or long-range missile tests, a senior official in Seoul said.
North Korea marks several major anniversaries this month and often marks the occasions with major tests of military hardware.
TWO MILLION TONNES
A source at Dandong Chengtai, one of China’s biggest buyers of North Korean coal, said the company had 600,000 tonnes of North Korean coal sitting at various ports, and a total of 2 million tonnes was stranded at Chinese ports.
Eikon data shows that most of these ships have recently left Chinese coal ports, including Weihai and Peng Lai, returning to North Korea full or mostly filled with cargo.
Last month, Reuters reported that Malaysia briefly prevented a North Korean ship carrying coal from China from entering its port in Penang because of a suspected breach in sanctions. The ship was eventually allowed to unload its 6,300 metric tonnes of anthracite coal.

North Korea is a significant supplier of coal to China, especially of the type used for steel making, known as coking coal.
To make up for the shortfall from North Korea, China has ramped up imports from the United States in an unexpected boon for U.S. President Donald Trump, who has declared he wants to revive his country’s struggling coal sector.
Eikon data shows no U.S. coking coal was exported to China between late 2014 and 2016, but shipments soared to over 400,000 tonnes by late February.
This trend was exacerbated after cyclone Debbie knocked out supplies from the world’s top coking coal region in Australia’s state of Queensland, forcing Chinese steel makers to buy even more U.S. cargoes.
The other big coking coal supplier that has ramped up exports to China since the ban on North Korean cargoes is Russia.

Caracas (AFP) – Venezuela erupted Monday in a fifth day of violent protests against President Nicolas Maduro as the United States voiced “grave concern” over moves to stifle one of his main opponents.
In the latest clashes in the once-booming oil exporter, riot police in Caracas fired tear gas at stone-throwing demonstrators — whose leaders vowed not to let up the pressure on Maduro.
“This is a battle of resistance. We will see who gets tired first: us of fighting, or them of repressing,” said the deputy speaker of the opposition-majority congress, Freddy Guevara.
The streets of Caracas and several other Venezuelan cities have seen running battles in recent days as protesters have rallied demanding elections.
Police fired water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets at demonstrators, who hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails.
On Monday, several patients including a newborn baby had to be evacuated from a medical clinic in the Las Mercedes district after it was struck by tear gas canisters, a doctor there, Luis Montanes, told reporters.
One protester was killed on Thursday. Dozens of people have been wounded or arrested.

Student accused of sexual harassment commits suicide after Title IX kangaroo court

If every other egregious example of a male student denied due process after being accused of sexual misconduct gets ignored, this one should not be.
A male student who was accused of sexual harassment committed suicide just days after the University of Texas at Arlington ignored its own policies in order to punish him. The accused student’s father, a lawyer acting as the administrator of his son’s estate, is now suing the school for violating his son’s Title IX rights.
College administrators, as well as members of the media and legislators, would do well to remember the name Thomas Klocke. Klocke, a straight male, was accused by a gay male student of writing anti-gay slurs on his computer during a class. Klocke vehemently denied the accusation, and administrators who investigated the incident acknowledged there was no evidence to support the accuser’s claims. Nevertheless, Klocke was punished.
The accusing student, who is being sued by Klocke’s father for defamation, claims that in May 2016, Klocke made a comment during a class about “privilege,” and then proceeded to open his laptop and type “gays should die” into his web browser’s search bar. The accuser (who is not being named because Watchdog was unable to contact him for comment) claims he typed into his own browser search bar, “I’m gay.”

Chinese troops to the border: On the Korean Peninsula, everything old is new again

There will be more to write about this in the days ahead. For now, we must pause to note a most serious development: China’s reported deployment of 150,000 troops to the border with North Korea.
This action is “in response to” U.S. force deployments to South Korea and the immediate surrounding region. But let’s not kid ourselves: nobody deploys 150,000 troops at the drop of a hat. If China is actually moving that many troops (and that remains to be verified), the action has been in planning for quite a while.
According to South Korea’s Chosun, apparently quoting from Chinese news sources, the deployment is of “medical and backup units”:
And now China, left shocked by the air strikes, has deployed medical and backup units from the People’s Liberation Army forces to the Yalu River, Korea’s Chosun.com reported.
But nobody has 150,000 “medical and backup personnel” to deploy to a single theater. The bulk of the “150,000” would be combat arms units — infantry, artillery, aviation — and probably more than half of those are units already stationed in the north, and being placed on an alert footing.
….As the days pass and tensions build around the world, it’s extremely important to understand that what we are seeing is a bill coming due. The world was not pacified and serene six months ago. In fact, it was already in the chaotic condition we now see becoming more antic and potentially confrontational. Recall, for example, that North Korea issued hysterical threats to Obama, launched missiles irresponsibly on his watch, performed nuclear warhead tests, and even attacked and sank a South Korean warship in one of the worst incidents since the armistice took effect.
A key reason why China is at least purporting to react more vigorously, as Trump shores up the defense of South Korea, is that Trump might actually make good on his vows…..
….Trump’s unconventional starting point for international relations has done nothing more than reveal the truth about the Korean situation, just as it has done in so many other cases. Korea was never settled. It has been an unstable, unresolved situation for nearly seven decades, held in an artificial and most unsatisfactory stasis by multiple parties maintaining a steady strain throughout that time on lines that often fray. The horrific cost to the people of North Korea has been uncountable.
It’s China that most wants nothing to change, because China’s chief interest is in keeping the Korean Peninsula divided. A unified Korea is always a vulnerability for Beijing; always existing as a risk for anti-China alliances: with Russia, the U.S., even — at this remove of history — Japan. Yet a unified Korea wholly allied with China would alarm Russia and Japan too greatly for stability. Better, from China’s perspective, to just keep Korea divided. Better an unstable stasis than a deep, superficially stable fault line…..

Prior to Obama taking office Iran and China (through their North Korean puppets) keep the worlds attention bouncing between the two regions. Turkey’s foreign policy and the rhetoric that presumably went to support it, has, during the past several years, aimed less at achieving foreign policy goals and more at consolidating voters’ support for the Ankara government.
Self-aggrandizing behavior has predominantly shaped policy and functioned to please the Turks’ passion for a return to their glorious Ottoman past.
Assertive and confrontational diplomatic language and playing the tough guy of the neighborhood may have helped garner popular support for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), but after years of “loud barking and no biting”, Turkey has effectively become the victim of its own narrative.
In 2010, Turkey froze diplomatic relations with Israel and promised “internationally to isolate the Jewish state”, and never to restore ties unless, along with two other conditions, Jerusalem removed its naval blockade of Gaza to prevent weapons from being brought in that would be used to attack Israel. Turkey’s prime minister at the time, Ahmet Davutoglu, said Israel would “kneel down to us”.
In 2016, after rounds of diplomatic contacts, Turkey and Israel agreed to normalize their relations. The blockade of Gaza, to prevent shipments of weaponry to be used by Gazans in terror attacks remains in effect.

A fiery Islamist preacher in Sydney has denounced Muslim men who use public urinals in a sermon about death.
Fundamentalist Abdulghani Albaf said people who refused to follow Allah would be punished in the grave for indiscretions, like spreading ‘evil rumours’ and exposing themselves at a public urinal.
‘There are two mentionings, one that mentions when they would urinate that they would do so without, in public, without concealing, hiding themselves or hiding their private parts,’ he thundered at the end of his 48-minute, Friday night sermon.
‘How often do we see this today? Every public, every male public toilet now has urinals where they just stand up like animals and urinate in front of one another.
‘What’s worse is we even have Muslims using these urinals.’
The Islamic teacher’s denunciation was delivered in a men’s and boy’s-only prayer room above the Bukhari House Islamic Bookstore at Auburn, in Sydney’s west.
This book store has been linked to Farhad Jabar, the 15-year-old boy who killed accountant Curtis Cheng outside police headquarters at Parramatta in 2015.
Mr Albaf’s March sermon was delivered at a forum organised by the hardline Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah Association in Auburn, during his visit from Young in southern New South Wales.
ASWJ’s fundamentalist founder Sheikh Feiz Muhammad last year delivered a sermon saying it was a ‘major sin’ for Muslims to attend non-Muslim events.
‘Is it part of the sharia? Are we allowed to entertain ourselves with celebrations that are built on non-Muslim concepts?,’ he said.
‘If you go on the belief, ‘I just want to join in and have the fun, you know, just have a night out, and enjoy myself but I don’t believe in all this nonsense’, that’s a major sin,’ he said.
‘It’s a what? It’s a major sin.’
Both sermons were shared by Sydney Islamic Lectures, which posts links to Islamist groups and sharia law lectures, a legal system which secular Muslims reject.
They also posted a link to a school holiday program for children aged four, five and six, which will accept 80 students who will be taught about Islam every morning during three days in April at the Masjid Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq mosque in Auburn.
The group on Thursday posted Mr Albaf’s sermon to its Facebook page but it put up a shorter version with soft music over his speech.
At Young in February, 42-year-old electrician Haisem Zahab, was arrested and charged over an alleged terror plot to develop ‘high-tech missiles and laser warning devices’ for ISIS.
He had been under investigation by the Australian Federal Police’s Operation Marksburg for 18 months.

Baltimore Anti-Cop Consent Decree Imposed

An Obama-appointed judge is moving forward with a federal takeover of the Baltimore, Md. police department that critics say will boost crime there by handcuffing police officers in the increasingly violent city.
The pleas of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fell on deaf ears as U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar, appointed by President Obama in 2010, denied a request from Sessions to hold off on enforcing the consent decree drafted by cop-haters for at least 30 days so the new Trump administration could assess the underlying settlement.
“The time for negotiating the agreement is over,” Bredar wrote this past Friday, April 7. “The only question now is whether the Court needs more time to consider the proposed decree. It does not.”
Sessions said he’s in favor of reform but has “grave concerns that some provisions of this decree will reduce the lawful powers of the police department and result in a less safe city.”
The consent decree in U.S. v. Police Department of Baltimore City was signed by both sides on Jan. 12, 2017 as President Obama was packing his bags at the White House. (The consent decree may be read here. Bredar’s order requiring immediate enforcement of the decree, may be read here.)
Sessions said the provisions of the consent decree were “negotiated during a rushed process by the previous administration,” and at a time when “Baltimore is facing a violent crime crisis.”

Only Detroit or Atlanta could be more deserving of having their police force shackled like this. Although it will allow for Black-on-White crime to proceed apace, most Caucasians left metropolitan Baltimore decades ago.
As is always the case, the real victims will be more young Black men who, unfettered now to an even greater degree, will set about killing each other with an extra measure of vigor.

President Trump’s swift bombing of a Syrian airfield responsible for a chemical attack has been praised by our allies and even by Democrats. The mere fact that Trump followed up his condemnation of a sarin gas attack with military action sends a signal that the U.S. is no longer the “weak, pitiful giant,” to use Richard Nixon’s phrase, that eight years of Barack Obama’s appeasement and retreat had left it. Such praise is deserved, but the bombing is just the start. The real question is, what happens next? What’s the strategic goal?
The effect of the attack on restoring American prestige is undoubtedly important. Obama’s foreign policy reflected the idealistic internationalism that dismisses such old-fashioned ideas as prestige. Modern progressive thinking holds that the use of force represents a foreign policy failure, and usually makes things worse by entangling the U.S. in escalation and quagmires. Non-lethal negotiated settlements are a better way to defuse conflict, and a national humility based on recognition of past neo-imperialist sins (see Obama’s 2009 Cairo speech) can make our rivals and enemies more amenable to “win-win” agreements.
Obama’s now infamous “red line” warning about Assad’s use of chemical weapons in 2013, a warning the Syrian butcher promptly violated, reflected this thinking. Rather than back up his bold words with force when Assad went ahead and used chemical weapons in the Ghouta region, Obama quickly accepted Russia’s offer to help him negotiate a deal: The U.S. wouldn’t bomb Syria if Assad surrendered his chemical weapons stockpiles to Russia. Despite domestic and international criticism of such an obviously feckless capitulation, Obama told a reporter last year that he is still “very proud of this moment.”

Will last Friday’s terror attack in Stockholm change Swedish attitudes toward Islam? Not likely. Pretty much all of Europe has spent the last few decades undergoing (steady) Islamization, but the invasion has progressed so much further in Sweden than in almost every other country on the continent – and has occasioned so much less frank reportage, commentary, and criticism, that brave souls in Sweden’s Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark and Norway – routinely make disparaging reference to “Swedish conditions.” What this term refers to is not only the drastic social and economic changes currently underway in the country that once proudly called itself Folkhemmet, “the people’s home,” but the mentality – a mentality not unique to Sweden, but certainly more fully developed there, in the government, media, academy, police, and the public at large, than anywhere else in Europe – that has made this dread transformation possible.

“A center to combat such things as disinformation and fake news will be built in Finland following an agreement Tuesday of nine countries from the European Union and NATO.
The countries — Britain, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and the United States — signed the memorandum to set up the so-called “hybrid threat” center in Helsinki with the support of the Finnish government.
The center will become operational later this year and will initially have a budget of 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) and be staffed by a group of experts and reasearchers from the founding members.
Lorenz Meyer-Minneman, head of NATO’s civil preparedness unit, said the European Center of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats will serve as a platform for EU and NATO to pool resources and share expertise. Over recent years, campaigns to discredit, misinform and spread fake news have become an increasing problem for policymakers in Europe and the United States.
“Working together is essential in building resilience to hybrid threats,” said Meyer-Minneman.
Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini said the EU and NATO will face “the challenge of hybrid threats hand in hand.”
“Countering hybrid threats is a European priority,” Soini said, adding, without elaborating, that Finland itself has become a target for “hybrid influencing” through constant disinformation campaigns and “malicious activities in the cyber domain.”
The EU and NATO pledged in July at the military alliance’s summit in Warsaw to increase cooperation in the areas of cyber defense and countering hybrid threats.
The new Helsinki center aims to closely cooperate with NATO’s existing cyber defense center in Estonia and strategic communications center in Latvia.
Nordic neighbors Finland and Sweden are members of the EU, but not NATO. The rest are members of both though Britain is preparing to leave the EU.
In the past few years, the Nordic and Baltic countries have been particularly concerned over what they say are Russia’s aggressive disinformation campaigns and systematic spreading of false news on their countries.”

China Threatens To Bomb North Korea’s Nuclear Facilities If It Crosses Beijing’s “Bottom Line”
With everyone putting down new and/or revised “red lines”, be it on Syria or North Korea, it was now China’s turn to reveal its “red” or rather “bottom line”, and in a harshly worded editorial titled “The United States Must Not Choose a Wrong Direction to Break the DPRK Nuclear Deadlock on Wednesday” Beijing warned it would attack North Korea’s facilities producing nuclear bombs, effectively engaging in an act of war, if North Korea crosses China’s “bottom line.”
The editorial in the military-focused Global Times tabloid, owned and operated by the Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper, said that North Korea’s nuclear activities must not jeopardize northeastern China, and that if the North impacts China with its illicit nuclear tests through either “nuclear leakage or pollution”, then China will respond with force.
This, as the editorial puts it, is the “bottom line” for China; should it be crossed China will employ all means available including the military means to strike back,” warned the editorial.

“A Berlin court has convicted a 57-year-old man of hate speech against Green Party politician Claudia Roth. The defendant posted in fall 2015 that the parliamentarian should be “hanged.”
The Berlin-Tiergarten district court on Tuesday found a 57-year-old man guilty of verbally insulting Roth in two Facebook posts in which he vilified the MP and demanded that she be “hanged.”
The 57-year-old was fined 4,800 euros ($5,095) over the comments posted in September and October 2015. Admitting that he meant to insult Roth, the defendant argued that he hadn’t been serious “about the hanging.”
‘Despicable and creepy’ comments
The case against the man was started by another Facebook user. The employee of a digital printing company said the defendant was a customer who “seemed to be an enraged citizen” and later came across the man’s “despicable and creepy” comments online.
Roth, too, filed a complaint shortly afterwards. She did not stand as a witness in the trial.
According to Tuesday’s verdict, the accused admitted to writing the posts. The two entries were not justified, the court said, adding that “there are limits.”
The defendant’s comments created an “abstract threat,” the ruling
continued, adding that there are “people who feel called to comply with such requests.”
The initial penalty of 1,900 euros corresponds to a 160-day rate of 12 euros. However, the daily rate handed down in the verdict depends on the income of the defendants. As the defendant failed to provide any information about their income, it must instead be estimated by the court, a court spokesman explained.
The judgment has not yet been finalized; the man can still appeal.
Freedom of expression concerns
Germany’s network enforcement law (NetzDG), recently submitted by the federal government, is intended to help overcome online hate speech. Under the legislation, social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter are obliged to delete criminal content.
The proposed regulation has been the subject of sharp criticism, however, over fears that more content will be erased than necessary and effectively put freedom of expression at risk.”

“A group of Daesh sympathisers were hiding in one of Assiut province’s mountainous areas”, the ministry said in a statement, using an Arabic acronym for IS.
The group was hiding in the southern province “to prepare explosive devices in preparation for carrying out a series of terrorist attacks,” the ministry said.
They were killed after a shootout with the police, who found rifles, ammunition, and IS publications in the hideout, it said. The ministry did not say when the firefight took place.
The announcement follows two attacks on churches in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria on Palm Sunday, which killed 45 people and were claimed by IS.

Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old Uzbek national believed to have symphathized with jihadist groups, is being held on suspicion of driving a stolen truck into pedestrians on a busy street in central Stockholm before it crashed into a department store. Four people were killed and 15 others injured.
Akilov, a construction worker who had been refused permanent residency in Sweden, was arrested several hours after the attack in Märsta, a suburb around 40 kilometres north of central Stockholm.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a court document seen by AFP, Akilov’s state-appointed lawyer Johan Eriksson said his client had asked him to “relieve himself of his mission”, saying he “expressly wanted to be defended by a Sunni Muslim”.
Akilov had argued that “only a lawyer of this faith could assert his interests in the best way”, the statement said.
But judge Malou Lindblom dismissed the request “for lack of sufficient reasons”, in a written decision sent to AFP.
Akilov was due to appear in court at 10am on Tuesday for a magistrate to decide whether to remand him in custody.”
