Police were facing serious questions last night over how the knife-wielding terrorist was able to enter the Parliamentary estate.
There were unverified claims that no armed officers had been on duty at the main Carriage Gates, facing Parliament Square, which the Prime Minister uses to enter the House of Commons.
They are also used by other MPs, staff and visitors. At least four staff are usually stationed at the gates, two outside and two inside.

France shudders after London attack, Le Pen demands border controls
Far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Thursday said the lone-wolf attack outside parliament in London underscored the need for tighter border controls, as France shuddered at an incident that reopened wounds inflicted by similar assaults at home.
Security is a major campaign issue ahead of next month’s close-fought presidential election, in which Le Pen is seen reaching the second round on a nationalist, anti-immigration platform.
Wednesday’s attack has dominated French news coverage and served as a poignant reminder of militant attacks on French soil that have killed more 230 people since the start of 2015.
“The problem we have nowadays is this form of low-cost terrorism,” the National Front leader told BFM TV and RMC radio, adding “we must control our borders”.

“Marine Le Pen, the French far-right leader, has joined anti-immigration politicians in linking the London attack to immigration, despite the attacker being British.
Le Pen, who is forecast to reach the second round runoff in France’s presidential election in May, said on Thursday the attack underlined the importance of countries being able to protect their borders and stepping up general security measures.
“We must control our borders,” the Front National leader told France’s BFM TV and RMC radio. “The problem we have today is this form of low-cost terrorism, radicalised individuals acting alone, without a network. It’s a new form of terrorism that requires all the measures we are not taking at present.”
The attack has made headlines across Europe but particularly in France, after the Paris and Nice attacks of 2015 and 2016 respectively claimed nearly 230 lives, and where the country is still under a state of emergency and themes of security and immigration are dominating the election campaign.
Poland’s prime minister, Beata Szyd?o, also drew a link between the attack and the EU’s migrant policy, saying it vindicated Warsaw’s refusal to take in refugees under the EU’s quota scheme.
“I hear in Europe very often: do not connect the migration policy with terrorism, but it is impossible not to connect them,” Szyd?o told private Polish broadcaster TVN24.
She added that the EU’s migration commissioner, Dimitris Avramopoulos, currently on a visit to Warsaw, was “trying to tell us: you have to take these migrants … And two days later another terrorist attack in London occurs”.
Theresa May said on Thursday the attacker – who killed three people and injured 29, including seven critically, before being shot dead by police – was British-born and had been investigated “some years ago” by MI5 in relation to concerns about violent extremism.

Top Dem calls for investigation into House Intelligence chairman
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Thursday called for an investigation into House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), who bypassed the panel to brief President Trump on information related to U.S. surveillance of his transition team.
During an interview on CNN’s “New Day,” Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, called the Intelligence panel a “very special committee.”
“They are privileged to information that most members of Congress may never see and so you expect them to be extremely confidential,” he added.
“What he did was basically to go to the president, who’s being investigated, by the FBI and others and by the intelligence committee, to give them information.”

The FBI is not cooperating with the House of Representatives’ investigation into the NSA’s surveillance of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, the chairman of the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), said today.
During an explosive press conference outside the White House, Nunes told reporters that communications from the Trump team were picked up and disseminated within the government during the 2016 campaign. Nunes said sources within the intelligence community presented him with the information. He spoke to the press after briefing the administration.
“We don’t actually know yet officially what happened to General Flynn,” Nunes said of how communications from Gen. Flynn’s calls were leaked to the press. “We just know that his name leaked out but we don’t know how it was picked up yet. That was one of the things that we asked for in the March 15th letter, was for the NSA, CIA, and FBI to get us all the unmasking that was done.”
“And I’ll tell you, NSA is being cooperative,” Nunes continued, “but so far the FBI has not told us whether or not they’re going to respond to our March 15th letter, which is now a couple of weeks old.”

Exclusive: U.S. embassies ordered to identify population groups for tougher visa screening
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has directed U.S. diplomatic missions to identify “populations warranting increased scrutiny” and toughen screening for visa applicants in those groups, according to diplomatic cables seen by Reuters.
He has also ordered a “mandatory social media check” for all applicants who have ever been present in territory controlled by the Islamic State, in what two former U.S. officials said would be a broad, labor-intensive expansion of such screening. Social media screening is now done fairly rarely by consular officials, one of the former officials said.
Four cables, or memos, issued by Tillerson over the last two weeks provide insight into how the U.S. government is implementing what President Donald Trump has called “extreme vetting” of foreigners entering the United States, a major campaign promise. The cables also demonstrate the administrative and logistical hurdles the White House faces in executing its vision.
The memos, which have not been previously reported, provided instructions for implementing Trump’s March 6 revised executive order temporarily barring visitors from six Muslim-majority countries and all refugees, as well as a simultaneous memorandum mandating enhanced visa screening.
The flurry of cables to U.S. missions abroad issued strict new guidelines for vetting U.S. visa applicants, and then retracted some of them in response to U.S. court rulings that challenged central tenets of Trump’s executive order.

China says U.S. should respect China’s air defense zone
BEIJING (Reuters) – China said on Thursday the United States should respect its air defense identification zone (ADIZ), after CNN reported China had warned a U.S. bomber it was illegally flying inside China’s self-declared zone in the East China Sea.
China declared the zone, in which aircraft are supposed to identify themselves to Chinese authorities, in the East China Sea in 2013, which the United States and Japan have refused to recognize.
CNN, citing the U.S. Pacific Air Forces, said the B-1 bomber was flying near South Korea on Sunday, and that its pilots responded to Chinese air traffic controllers saying they were carrying out routine operations in international airspace, and that the aircraft did not deviate from its flight path.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she had not heard of the matter, and referred questions to the Defense Ministry, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Right away, this is good news for the truth. It’s good news because NSA is the agency that has to answer the right question. The FBI doesn’t know the answer to the right question, and isn’t going to find it out. Only the NSA can answer it.
And the House has asked the right question. The question is: What identities of “U.S. persons” whose communications were collected incidentally in the period surrounding the 2016 election were “unmasked” to intel-community personnel who viewed the material collected?
The answer to that question will reveal whether intel personnel, viewing the collected material, saw names such as “Michael Flynn” and “Donald J. Trump.”

When Facebook announced late last year that it had contracted with “fact checking” websites Snopes and PolitiFact to help it expose fake news, I shook my head in disbelief. Despite their pretense to impartiality, these sites are every bit as leftwardly inclined as the social media giant itself. The best that could come of this star-crossed enterprise was confirmation of Facebook’s already conspicuous political bias.
At least that’s what I thought at the time, but, boy, was I wrong. Snopes and PolitiFact really are ferreting fake news. They are doing such diligence in their search for the truth that they are even going after sites that openly advertise that they are reporting fake news.
A case in point is the watchdogs’ several reports on an article that ran in The Seattle Tribune. The item, which appeared on Feb. 26, was headlined “BREAKING: Trump’s Android Device Believed To Be Source Of Recent White House Leaks.” In the body of the column, we read:

A person has been detained in Antwerp, Belgium, after attempting to drive his car into a busy shopping street at high speed, according to police.
“A vehicle with French plates has tried to drive at high speed into the Meir [shopping street]. A man in camouflage was taken away,” Antwerp police chief Serge Muyters told a news conference.
“The pedestrians had to jump aside,” he added.

JERUSALEM — A young Israeli man who also holds U.S. citizenship was arrested by Israeli police Thursday in connection with the wave of security-related threats made to Jewish communities and institutions in the United States and several other countries over the past few months, according to the FBI and local authorities.
Israeli police said in a statement that the cyberattack squad of its fraud unit had worked together with the FBI, including representatives who went to Israel, and police organizations from other countries to track the suspect, who is 19 years old.

Larger Muslim community wants apology from mosque and wonders why controversial imam was invited to preach
A Montreal mosque is facing a police complaint and rebukes from the larger Muslim community after a video of an imam delivering a sermon in which he asks for Jews to be killed surfaced online.
The sermon took place at the Dar Al-Arqam Mosque in the city’s Saint-Michel neighbourhood on Dec. 23, 2016.
The video was posted to the mosque’s YouTube channel three days later. The imam in the video is Jordanian cleric Sheikh Muhammad bin Musa Al Nasr — he was reportedly an invited guest of the mosque.
In the video, the imam says in Arabic, “O Muslim, O servant of Allah, O Muslim, O servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.”
Part of the phrase references an Islamic hadith, which interprets the words and actions by the Prophet Muhammad.

CBC Montreal has reached out to the Dar Al-Arqam mosque for comment and was told no one was available.
Accused of inciting violence
The video was brought to the attention of B’nai Brith Canada, which filed a complaint with Montreal police on Monday.
The organization said it is totally unacceptable that a mosque would allow this to go on.
“This is inciting violence, and this is inciting radicalization,” said Harvey Levine, regional director of B’nai Brith in Quebec.
“It’s against the law and has to be stopped,” he said, adding that the complaint was filed with the Montreal hate crimes unit.
Montreal police confirmed they received a complaint, but would not provide any more information.
Mosque should apologize, says Muslim council
The president of the Muslim Council of Montreal, Salam Elmenyawi, wants to know why the imam was invited. He says the mosque should apologize.
He added that the Dar Al-Arqam Mosque is not one of the more than 40 institutions the council represents.
Imam Ziad Asali of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects told CBC Montreal’s Daybreak Thursday that he was also mystified as to why the cleric was invited to preach.
“I do not understand how this person was invited to come and give a sermon and spread this hatred in Montreal against any community,” he said.
The hadith is one of more than 100,000 that are written in many books, some of which are considered authentic, while others are not, said Asali.
“To use the themes of the Prophet to spread hatred is actually something that is disrespectful towards the Prophet himself,” Asali said.
There are mosques in Montreal, the imam said, that embrace a more extremist message.
“These people, not only do they show hatred towards non-Muslims, they even show hatred to us Muslims,” he said.
Other complaints
Levine said this is the second complaint against a Montreal-area mosque filed with the Montreal police’s hate crime unit in just over 40 days.
He said the police are still investigating that first instance but says they are not taking action soon enough.
“This is totally unacceptable. We want to know why the hate crimes unit has not done something to date yet. This person should be arrested and charged for hate crimes,” said Levine.

The Prime Minister has said the “Islamist” attack on Parliament was not “Islamic” and Islam is a “great faith”.
Taking on the role of a theologian, Theresa May insisted: “It is wrong to describe this as Islamic terrorism. It is Islamist terrorism. It is a perversion of a great faith.”
Speaking in Parliament, she also said the attack showed “the importance of all of our faiths working together, and recognising the values that we share”.
Adding: “This act of terror was not an act of faith. It was a perversion; a warped ideology, which leads to an act of terrorism like that and it will not prevail.”
Islamism is generally defined as a political interpretation of Islam. Some critics argue Islam is intrinsically political – as the Quran mandates a religious state and law – and say the term is irrelevant.
MPs almost unanimously agreed with the Prime Minister, lining up to warn against “demonising” and “stigmatising” Muslims, and to condemn “Islamophobia” and “racial and religious” discrimination.
Khalid Mahmood, the Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, said the attacker or attackers “pretend to be of a particular religion”.
“If they were of a religion they would not be carrying out acts like this,” he added.
Tulip Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, added: “People who commit acts of terrorism in the name of Islam do not speak for the majority of Muslims in this country.”
UKIP leader Paul Nuttall, meanwhile, did not shy away from describing the attack as “Islamic”.
“We have a cancer within a particular community and it needs to be cut out,” he told Sky News outside Westminster Palace. “The Muslim community I believe needs to do more about this.
“We have the problem that we have 800 British citizens out fighting in Syria and Iraq for Islamic State.
“I don’t believe they should be allowed to return and I think that, down the line, we’re going to have to look at foreign funding of mosques, particularly from Saudi Arabia, who promote radicalism across the globe.”

“Russia may be supplying Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, the top US commander in Europe has said.
Army General Curtis Scaparrotti, who is also Nato’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, told a senate hearing he had seen Russian influence on Afghan Taliban insurgents growing.
“I’ve seen the influence of Russia of late — increased influence in terms of association and perhaps even supply to the Taliban,” Mr Scaparotti said.
It comes after Taliban fighters captured the strategic district of Sangin in the southern Afghan province of Helmand after security forces pulled out, officials said.
Helmand, which accounts for the bulk of Afghanistan’s billion dollar opium crop, is already largely in the hands of the Taliban but the capture of Sangin, where US and British forces once suffered heavy casualties, underlines their growing strength in the south.”

“Ten Egyptian soldiers, including three officers, were killed in clashes with armed men in the central Sinai region, the country’s military said early on Thursday.
Medical sources told The New Arab that the clashes took place in the Jabal Sahabah area of the Sinai.
The dead included chief of staff Yahya Hassan, commander of the 116th Brigade of the Egyptian army, in addition to Commander Ahmed Malik and Major Mohammed Omar, the source said.
The clashes come at a time when media outlets affiliated with the Cairo government have reported that the Egyptian army is currently conducting raids in the Sinai targeting “high risk terrorist targets”.”

“Fighting around Syria’s capital Damascus has cut 300,000 people off from humanitarian aid and pauses in the conflict are needed to let aid convoys in, Jan Egeland, U.N. humanitarian advisor on Syria, said on Thursday.
“They are totally dependent on our supplies. Starvation will be just around the corner unless we get there in the coming weeks,” Egeland told Reuters in an interview after chairing the weekly Syria humanitarian taskforce meeting in Geneva.
The besieged Douma and Kafr Batna areas of rural Damascus contain 161,000 and 142,000 civilians respectively. Their food stocks have dwindled and informal supply routes have been cut.
“The increase in the fighting has disastrous effects on the civilian population,” Egeland said. “They haven’t had any supplies by the U.N. since October in Douma, and in the Kafr Batna area not since June of last year.”
The Syrian government is not giving the green light for convoys and armed groups are not guaranteeing the security of aid convoys, meaning that no aid can go in, Egeland said…”

Imams in Canadian mosques have been inciting the killing of “infidels”, primarily Jews, for years. This agitation appears to have had no visible impact on Canadian parliamentarians, evidently too busy with petitions and motions banning alleged “Islamophobia”.
In 2009, for example, Toronto-area imam Said Rageah, at the Abu Huraira Centre, called on Allah to “destroy” the enemies of Islam from within and “damn” the “infidel” Jews and Christians.
“Allah protect us from the fitna [sedition, affliction] of these people; Allah protect us from the evil agenda of these people; Allah destroy them from within themselves, and do not allow them to raise their heads” prayed the imam.
In 2012, Sheikh Abdulqani Mursal, imam at Masjid Al Hikma mosque in Toronto, explained that Jews are destined to be killed by the Muslims. Citing text from a hadith, he said:

Khalid Masood: London attacker identified as 52-year-old from Kent
Suspect has not been previously convicted of any terrorism offences
The man responsible for the terrorist attack in Westminster has been named by police as Khalid Masood.
Masood, 52, was born in Kent and detectives believe he was most recently living in the West Midlands.
Scotland Yard said Masood had previous convictions for assaults, including GBH, possession of offensive weapons and public order offences.
His first conviction was in November 1983 for criminal damage and his last conviction was in December 2003 for possession of a knife.
He had not been convicted of any terrorism offences.
Masood was also known by a number of aliases, the Metropolitan Police said.
Three people were killed when the knife-wielding attacker ploughed a car through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, before storming the Parliamentary estate.
He was shot dead.
Masood had been living at a property in Birmingham’s Winson Green neighbourhood until December, according to The Birmingham Mail.
The paper reported that he had been living there with a woman and a young child. He is also thought to have worked as an English teacher and been a bodybuilder.
Earlier, Prime Minister Theresa May said the attacker was born in Britain and had previously been investigated for suspected extremism by MI5.
He was once investigated in relation to concerns about violent extremism some years ago but was a “peripheral figure”.
The case is “historic” and the attacker was “not part of the current intelligence picture,” Ms May added.[…]

Turkish news agency says “Wassim B.” was arrested at airport and planned to return to Canada.
MONTREAL—Several Turkish news outlets are reporting that authorities have arrested a Canadian at an airport near the Syrian border on suspicion he was a weapons trainer for the Islamic terror group Daesh.
According to the Andolu News Agency, a man identified only as “Wassim B.” was arrested on March 10 at the airport in Adana, a city in southern Turkey. The report, which cited unnamed security officials, said the man had been planning to fly to Istanbul, before catching flights to Greece and then Canada.
Under interrogation, it was reportedly determined that the man was in fact a “high-level” weapons trainer for the terror group in Syria. Officials also seized videos, images that showed him firing weapons as well as other documents, according to the report.
Global Affairs Canada did not immediately respond to inquiries about whether consular assistance has been offered or was sought in the case.
The images of the man who was arrested that were published by Turkish news organizations bear a resemblance to Wassim Boughadou, a Montreal-born man of Algerian ancestry who is under investigation by the RCMP for having joined Daesh, which is also known as the Islamic State or ISIS.
Boughadou is one of several men from Quebec suspected of having participated in the kidnapping of two American journalists in Syria in 2013, which has been blamed on a group linked to Al-Qaeda.
In an interview with La Presse in January 2017, Boughadou denied taking part in the acts for which he is suspected by Canadian authorities. He also refused to discuss his movements or activities since leaving the country in 2012.
But he admitted to being an enthusiastic gun owner before he left Canada for Turkey one night at the age of 21, determined to escape the surveillance of the RCMP, which he said was harassing him because of his religious beliefs.
In the interview with La Presse, Boughadou said that he was in favour of any country that is governed according to Sharia law, but that he is against Daesh because they have strayed from Islam.
“They have become crazy,” he said.

Report: Iran Already Intimidated by Trump
Middle Eastern analysts say a vicious regime is being brought to heel.

An analysis by MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute) finds that the Trump administration’s tough stance toward Iran is already having an effect.
Analyses of the very complex Middle Eastern chessboard abound, and assessments by knowledgeable people not infrequently contradict each other. What makes MEMRI’s investigations especially interesting, though, is that they’re based on very close observation of Middle Eastern countries themselves, including both their media and their actions (or inactions) on the ground.
The three authors of the analysis in question include Yigal Carmon, president of MEMRI and a former counterterrorism adviser to two Israeli prime ministers. These authors write that since the Trump administration took office, Tehran has come to feel “that it is besieged and under an emerging existential threat, in light of the crystallization of a comprehensive U.S.-Russia-Arab (including Israel) front against [it].”
Iran, MEMRI says, has been showing “considerable military restraint and a halt to long-range missile tests”—the latter in response to the administration’s warning to Iran, after its failed missile launch on January 29, that it had been “put on notice.”

Erdogan urges US, Britain to drop ‘exaggerated’ laptop ban
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the United States and Britain on Thursday to drop what he said were “exaggerated” new aviation restrictions imposed on flights from some airports, including Istanbul.
In a live television interview, Erdogan said the two countries were right to “dwell on security” but said the bans on some electronics, including laptops, on board flights from some Middle East and North African airports were excessive.
Erdogan said he discussed the ban in a telephone call with British Prime Minister Theresa May, while Turkey’s foreign minister took up the issue during a recent visit to the United States.
“My hope is that they abandon this error as soon as possible,” Erdogan said.
Earlier, a senior Turkish official said the government was taking steps to keep Istanbul’s main airport and its national carrier, Turkish Airlines, outside of the scope of the restrictions.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Huseyin Muftuoglu also criticized the two countries for not consulting with Turkey before deciding on the ban. Muftuoglu said taking measures “against people that pose a threat instead of punishing normal passengers would be more effective.”
The spokesman also claimed Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport was one of the safest in the world.
More than 40 people were killed last year in an attack on that airport, which was blamed on the Islamic State group.

The U.S. Senate on Thursday voted narrowly to repeal regulations requiring internet service providers to do more to protect customers’ privacy than websites like Alphabet Inc’s Google (GOOGL.O) or Facebook Inc (FB.O).
The vote was along party lines, with 50 Republicans approving the measure and 48 Democrats rejecting it. The two remaining Republicans in the Senate were absent and did not cast a vote.
According to the rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission in October under then-President Barack Obama, internet providers would need to obtain consumer consent before using precise geolocation, financial information, health information, children’s information and web browsing history for advertising and internal marketing.

After sexually assaulting an incapacitated passenger, a Las Vegas cabdriver returned to the victim’s house with a bouquet of flowers and started apologizing, according to the man’s arrest report.
The cabdriver, 25-year-old Abdul Based, was arrested Friday.
According to the arrest report, obtained Thursday by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Based returned to the victim’s Henderson home three times after the March 6 incident.
On March 9, the woman was in her driveway with her niece when a man with flowers approached her and started apologizing. Her niece told her that he was the same man who came to the house twice earlier that day, according to the report.
The woman, who was not yet aware of the sexual assault, grabbed a baseball bat and threatened the man until he left, according to the report.

Nouvelle polémique autour de la chaîne conservatrice Intereconomia, qui dénonce « l’islamisation de la société » en mettant en scène sa directrice adjointe entièrement revêtue du niqab.
Intereconomia est une chaîne de télévision espagnole, catholique et ultraconservatrice. Dans ses heures de gloire, elle réalisait une audience de 800 000 personnes mais depuis 2013 des problèmes économiques l’ont poussée à cesser d’émettre sur l’ensemble du territoire espagnol. Elle est désormais visible sur la TNT de Madrid, Valence et Baléares, sur Internet et dans certains bouquets payants.
Mardi 21 mars, sa directrice adjointe est apparue en niqab dans une émission intitulée « Islamisation de l’Europe: porterons-nous la burqa? ». Sur un fond d’appel à la prière, Beatriz Rojo débute sa présentation en se demandant à voix haute si « en Occident nous sommes condamnés à voir les femmes européennes, occidentales, obligées de se soumettre aux diktats du fondamentalisme islamiste ». La présentatrice ajoute qu’elle ne veut pas que « l’Espagne devienne comme la France ou la Belgique » entre autres, des « preuves de l’échec du multiculturalisme ». La séquence se termine avec Beatriz Rojo quittant son niqab en affirmant que des personnes comme elles « tiendraient tête » au totalitarisme islamique ».
La chaîne est une vieille habituée des scandales et polémiques, souvent accusée de franquisme et de positions très marquées à l’extrême-droite. Même le très conservateur Francisco Marhuenda, directeur du quotiden La Razón, l’avait qualifiée de chaîne « infecte d’extrême droite ».
