An aspiring Islamic State fighter and father is accused of slaughtering his wife in front of their three children, gouging out her eye and flushing it down the toilet.
The Melbourne man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, took his young children with him in the car to dump their mother’s mutilated body in grassland.
He then took them to a bakery to eat pastries.
At the accused killer’s committal hearing on Thursday, a magistrates’ court heard the children are now in the care of child protection services and are highly disturbed.
A Department of Health and Human Services officer gave evidence that when one of the children was given a doll to play with in a sandpit at school and noticed it was missing a limb, he commented “that’s what had happened to his mother”.
Police documents tendered to the court allege the extremist father regularly abused his wife and children, and had a keen interest in fighting for the so-called Islamic State in Syria.
The documents say the wife objected to her husband’s jihadist sympathies and that conflict over this may have led to her death.
The body of the mother, aged in her 20s, was found by a jogger in Melbourne’s north last year.
It was so badly disfigured and tightly bound in cling wrap, a quilt and tape police could not tell what gender she was.
Forensic analysis revealed two severed fingers, a missing right eye and deep cuts all over.
The woman remained unidentified for weeks.
Police visited the family’s home in early July for a “welfare check” and finding the three children badly injured, arrested the father.
He has been charged with murdering his wife and causing injury to the children.
A policeman who attended the home testified that the father had a “thousand-yard stare” and did not want to let him inside.
“He appeared jittery,” Sergeant James Marsden said.
Police found the house almost devoid of furniture, apart from a few urine-soaked mattresses, crates and a heater.
The children had injuries including bad bruising.
One had burnt feet, which witnesses told police was the result of the accused submerging her feet in very hot water.
Police obtained statements from family members saying the accused killer wanted to go to Syria to fight for IS and that he had once sliced his wife’s hand with a knife because she objected.
The husband exerted extreme control over his wife, physically, financially and socially, the documents state.
She was not allowed outdoors without him, was forced to wear a full-length burka, was isolated from her family and friends, and suffered regular beatings at his hands.
He did not allow his children to go to school and just wanted them to study the Koran, the documents say.
Police allege the children mentioned the “Anti-Christ” several times in interviews.
“Muslim tradition holds that the Anti-Christ has one eye, and often that the right eye is missing, or is blind in the right eye,” the document says.
“This may bear connection with the accused removing the right eye of the deceased.”
The committal hearing is due to continue on Friday.

A fire broke out in a refugee shelter on Carl-Diem-Straße shortly after 10 AM CET. The flames spread rapidly. The container modules which housed refugees from different countries were soon fully ablaze.
Firefighters could basically only let it burn down in a controlled manner. There was nothing left to save.
Did an inhabitant set the fire?
Police arrested a 21-year-old asylum seeker from Somalia. Other inhabitants accused him to the police of setting the fire.
It is not certain if he indeed set the fire. Police began further investigations.
No one was injured. The refugees are being taken to other shelters at the moment.

IRAQ – Air strikes on Isis-held Mosul ‘leave 230 civilians dead’, reports local media
US Central Command says it is researching reports of extensive loss of civilian life in third such alleged incident in recent weeks
Approximately 230 people are reported to have been killed in what is thought to have been a US-led coalition air strike on an Isis-held neighbourhood in Mosul.
A correspondent for Rudaw, a Kurdish news agency operating in northern Iraq, said that 137 people – most believed to be civilians – died when a bomb hit a single building in al-Jadida, in the western side of the city on Thursday. Another 100 were killed nearby.
“Some of the dead were taking shelter inside the homes,” Hevidar Ahmed said from the scene.

Coalition air strikes ‘kill more than 200 people’ in Mosul
More than 200 civilians are reported to have been killed in a single US-led coalition raid on Mosul, as the United Nations warned yesterday the worst was yet to come for those still trapped in the Iraqi city.
Some 230 bodies of mostly women and children were pulled from three adjoining houses in the Jadida neighbourhood of west Mosul overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning, according to witnesses.
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) had taken over the buildings to use as sniper positions and had been holding civilians there which they had rounded up to use as human shields.
A Mosul resident who has been documenting life under Isil and now the battle for the city under the name MosulEye told the Telegraph one of the trapped residents called him yesterday pleading for help, saying they had been without food and water for four days.

USA – Mattis seeks out Soros-funded think tanker for top Pentagon post
Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis wants to nominate a senior fellow at a Soros-funded think tank as undersecretary at the Pentagon, as the embattled Cabinet official continues to clash with the White House over prospective nominees.
Politico reports that Mattis wants Rudy deLeon — a senior fellow at the far-left Center for American Progress (CAP) — to come on board as undersecretary for personnel and readiness.
DeLeon previously served in the Clinton administration as deputy secretary of defense. During that time, Gen. Mattis served as his senior military assistant.
DeLeon worked for Boeing as senior vice president from 2001 to 2006 and currently serves on the board of major defense company General Dynamics.
This appears to be a peculiar choice for an undersecretary, given that deLeon recently endorsed a letter opposing the president’s immigration moratorium from six terror-linked countries. The letter calls Trump’s national security order “beneath the dignity of our great nation” and advised government workers to apply “discretion,” in an attempt to essentially undermine the president’s initiative.
As a CAP official, he has engaged in campaigns to advance “progressive values.” deLeon advocates for government to take “steps that will be a lasting legacy to the progressive societies for decades to come.” He is also a proponent of President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal with the terror state in Tehran.
DeLeon’s employer is funded by fringe leftist billionaire George Soros. It was co-founded and run by John Podesta, a longtime Obama and Clinton operative. Moreover, CAP is currently funding a “Resist” campaign to undermine the president’s agenda.
Why Sec. Mattis continues to vouch for Obama- and Clinton-era officials to run the Pentagon remains a controversial topic in D.C. Several Republicans are said to be growing frustrated with the retired general’s unwillingness to promote ideological allies of conservatives to top Pentagon posts.
Mattis has attempted to nominate Anne Patterson — the former ambassador to Egypt who became cozy with the Muslim Brotherhood — as one of his deputies, until the White House quashed the idea. Mattis also intended to hire Michele Flournoy, an Obama Pentagon official who co-founded the left-leaning Center for a New American Security, as a top official at the Defense Department.

I’ll touch on the “incidental” issue at length in the points below, but to immediately address Ben’s argument, even if the collection was incidental, once the unmasking and dissemination of that “incidental” information occurs, that is the Obama administration illegally targeting Trump using surveillance, and that is the exact same thing as outright spying. And being illegally spied on was, of course, Trump’s overall claim.
As far as the THIS WASN’T A WIRETAP nonsense, it reminds me of someone accusing a 70-year-old (Trump’s age) of lying when he claims someone stole his record collection after the bad guy is found only with the old man’s iPod. You said records! Where’s the vinyl! Where’s the vinyl! Where’s the vinyl!

Children could be turned away from the border without any assessment of their claims for asylum, should a proposal by the Danish government become reality.
The government’s proposal for the so-called ‘emergency brake’ (nødbremse) law, originally proposed in September 2016, would allow completely closed borders in an emergency situation.
In such a “crisis situation”, the EU’s Dublin Regulation would not apply, according to the proposal put forth by the government. What actually constitutes the crisis situation is yet to be fully clarified.
Integration minister Inger Støjberg has said that, had all other factors been identical, the ‘emergency brake’ would have been applied during the September 2015 influx of refugees which saw large groups walking along motorways in southern Denmark.
There had been doubt as to whether the emergency brake provision for closing borders, which has now reached the agenda for parliamentary voting, would include any provision for unaccompanied minors or whether they would be excluded from it.
While no statement on minors is included in the proposal itself, Politiken reports that the Ministry for Integration informed it in an email that “in principal, everyone will be turned away – including unaccompanied minors. There may be exceptions, however, for example if the parents are already in Denmark.”
