Wealthy customers at a major German bank will earn negative interest rates on their deposits, the bank announced this week.
Sparkasse Köln-Bonn was the latest in a series of major German institutions to pass on to its private customers the European Central Bank’s negative interest rates.
Most financial institutions had only required business customers to suffer the negative interest rates, not private account holders.
In March 2016, the ECB set depositary rates at -0.4 percent to help battle deflation in European countries, hoping to push banks’ excess cash into the economy. It first entered negative territory when it set the rate at -0.1 percent in June 2014.
At the time, ECB President Mario Draghi said the measure was exclusively about the banks. “The interest rates we have changed are for banks, not for the people,” the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported.
The savings bank Sparkasse runs in a decentralized structure with nearly 400 banks worth a total of about 1 trillion euros (US$1.1 trillion). Köln-Bonn is the second-largest Sparkasse with about 900,000 private customers.
Financial newspaper “Handelsblatt” reported that the negative interest rates would apply to those with an account balance of at least three million euros.
Hamburger Sparkasse, the biggest Sparkasse in Germany, was reportedly in discussions with its wealthy customers to impose negative rates.

“Against who? My Turkish brother citizens in Germany and brother ministers” who planned to hold campaign rallies for a ‘yes’ vote in the referendum, he said.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel branded Erdogan’s comments “shocking”.
“We are tolerant but we’re not stupid,” he told the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper. “That’s why I have let my Turkish counterpart know very clearly that a boundary has been crossed here.”
Julia Kloeckner, the vice-president of Merkel’s CDU party, also reacted angrily to the comments.
“Has Mr. Erdogan lost his mind?” she said, telling journalists she was urging the EU to freeze “financial aid amounting to billions of euros” to Turkey.
‘Germany behind coup?’
Home to 1.4 million Turkish voters, Germany hosts the world’s largest Turkish diaspora but the partnership between NATO allies Ankara and Berlin has been ripped to shreds by the current crisis.
Turkey reacted furiously to a Frankfurt rally on Saturday urging a ‘no’ vote where protesters brandished insignia of outlawed Kurdish rebels, accusing Germany of double standards.
“Yesterday (Saturday), Germany put its name under another scandal,” presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told CNN-Turk. He said the German ambassador had been summoned although this was not confirmed by Berlin.
The Turkish foreign ministry accused the German authorities “of the worst example of double standards” for allowing the pro-Kurdish protest while preventing Turkish ministers from campaigning there.
Many protesters carried symbols of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), listed as a terror organisation not just by Turkey but also the EU and the United States.
Ankara also reacted with indignation after Germany’s intelligence chief said he was unconvinced by Turkish assertions that US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen was behind the failed July coup aimed at overthrowing Erdogan.
Kalin said Europe was seeking to “whitewash” Gulen’s group, while Defence Minister Fikri Isik said the comments raised questions about whether Berlin itself was involved in the putsch.
“The fact that the head of German intelligence made such a statement will increase doubts about Germany and give rise to the question ‘was German intelligence behind the coup?’,” he said.
In an interview with Der Spiegel published Saturday, German foreign intelligence chief Bruno Kahl said Ankara had repeatedly tried to persuade Berlin that Gulen was behind the coup “but they have not succeeded”.
‘Further than ever’
The dispute has left Turkey’s ambition to join the EU — a cornerstone of its policy for half a century — hanging in the balance ahead of the referendum.
Erdogan threw further oil on the fire Saturday by saying he believed parliament would, after the referendum, agree a bill to restore capital punishment which he would then sign.
It was Erdogan’s clearest warning yet that he could reverse the 2004 abolition of capital punishment, a pre-condition for joining the EU.
European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned Sunday that any return of the death penalty in Turkey would be a “red line”.
And Gabriel told Der Spiegel: “We are further away than ever from Turkey’s accession to the EU.”
The crisis is hitting Turkey’s relations with key EU members and Turkish-Dutch ties hit an all-time low in the run-up to the March 15 election in the Netherlands.
Erdogan last week even called on Turks living in Europe to have more children to tilt the demographic balance.
Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen on Sunday said he was summoning the Turkish ambassador for an explanation after a report that dual nationals critical of Erdogan had been threatened.”

Police investigate subway station fight between teens
Police in Philadelphia are searching for a group of teenagers involved in a huge subway station fight.
Authorities say the brawl began after a street-level snowball fight around 3:45 p.m. Thursday. Officials say the teens eventually moved down to the subway station and it turned into an all-out brawl.
Video released by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority also shows some teenagers from the group kicking, stomping and punching two men who are curled up on the ground.
Police say at least three victims sustained injuries.
But, these types of violence have been happening way too often at the end of the school day. Officers said the chaos can be spontaneous or planned on social media, and they only last a few minutes.

Getting real: Why Israel is ramping up responses to Iran-backed provocations from Syria

When Israel used the Arrow air defense system to shoot down a missile launched from Syria on Friday, observers noted with interest that the reaction of the Israeli government (GOI) was unusual. The GOI not only went public – if only to a limited extent – about the missile intercept; it also spoke briefly about the task of the Israeli war planes that had executed strikes in Syria shortly before Syrian forces launched the missiles.
Not surprisingly, the purpose of the strikes was to interdict an arms shipment for Hezbollah, which may have arrived at an airport near Palmyra.
More surprisingly, however, Israel has followed up the strike and missile intercept with an explicit vow to destroy Syria’s air defense systems if they are used against IAF aircraft again.
Israel has not suddenly gotten more aggressive. Rather, the situation in Syria – and Lebanon – has changed. The change is reflected in multiple dimensions, all coinciding to significantly shift the picture of what Iran-backed forces are preparing for.
UPDATE*: Avigdor Lieberman came out earlier with his promise to destroy the Syrian air defense system. Israel’s army chief of staff made a similar promise to Lebanon in a speech at a military event on Sunday, citing the Lebanese government’s embrace of Hezbollah in recent weeks:
It’s noteworthy that this passage was in an official speech; i.e., not an off-the-cuff remark. What’s going on right now in both Lebanon and Syria, with Iran’s machinations behind it, is very serious.
* Although the reporting here has never had explicit confirmation from a U.S. government source, the size of Iran’s footprint in Syria is its own argument for extensive Iranian control of the local defense forces. With thousands of fighters and a tremendous investment in the country, Iran would not want to leave such control solely in the hands of the Assad regime. Given the number of outside nations conducting bombing strikes in Syria – Russia, the U.S. (and a coalition including Jordan and Qatar), Israel, Turkey – it would be unthinkable for Iran to not exert some level of control over the national air defense system.
Yesterday Eeyore said that war in the Pacific is inevitable, the information given here says one between Israel and the Iranian puppets (Hezbollah and Lebanon) is also inevitable.
The big questions are 1) what will Iran do, will they come into support their puppets? 2) What will Putin do. will he rein in Iran or will they ignore him? 3) will this occur when someone makes a move in the Far East that starts the shooting over there? 4) What will Erdogan do? Will he start trouble in Europe possibly including some of the embedded military forces coming out in the open and fighting the police and European military with light and heavy infantry weapons?
Another question of more then academic interest is did the Arrow system intercept a SAM? If it has this capability has the US acquired it and updated all of our anti missile units with this tech? One thing that stands in support of their doing this is that Iran and its puppets knows what type of missile was intercepted so why make a false claim allowing your enemy to present proof you are lying?

One of the biggest jobs facing the new president is undoing the mess he inherited from the old one. This undertaking will be harder than it sounds, as we are witnessing now in the GOP’s Herculean struggle to find a replacement for Obamacare that will not uninsure 20 million Americans with the stroke of a pen.
But other Obama-era initiatives will be daunting to overturn not because of their complexity but because of subversive measures the outgoing president took in the hopes of salvaging some of his legacy.
Consider, for example, Barack Obama’s “investment” of some $77 billion of your money in climate-related initiatives. To make sure that his successor couldn’t easily reverse these programs, he sprinkled them across dozens of agencies. And for good measure he left no master list.

Das Opfer habe erklärt, es habe nur von den Schienen herunterkommen wollen und keinen anderen Weg als den auf den Bahnsteig gesehen, so der Sprecher der Bundespolizei. „Der Geschädigte steht nach meiner Einschätzung unter Schock. Er ist massiv von der Gewalttat beeindruckt.“
Die Tatverdächtigen hätten bei ihrer Vernehmung keine Angaben zum Geschehen gemacht und sich auf Erinnerungslücken wegen ihrer Alkoholisierung berufen. Beide Männer sollen bereits Straftaten in Deutschland verübt haben und polizeibekannt sein. „Wir waren froh, dass wir sie durch rasches Handeln stellen konnten. Meist ist es schwierig, bei solchen Vorfällen Tatverdächtige zu finden“, so Uhlitzsch.
Die Ermittlungen würden weiter laufen. So werde die Bundespolizei in dieser Woche das Material aus den Videokameras am Haltepunkt auswerten. Die Beamten würden auch noch auf Zeugen hoffen, die sich im Nachgang melden. So habe sich mindestens eine dritte Person auf dem Bahnsteig befunden und den Vorfall miterlebt. „Wir tun bei den Ermittlungen, was wir können.“
Die Nachricht, dass sich die Tatverdächtigen auf freiem Fuß befinden, stieß am Wochenende im Internet auf überwiegend entsetzte Kommentare. Bei ähnlich gelagerten Straftaten beispielsweise in der Berliner U-Bahn hatte die Staatsanwaltschaft Haftanträge gegen die Tatverdächtigen gestellt, der Ermittlungsrichter hatte jeweils auch Haftbefehle verhängt.

They prevented him from getting back on the platform and only quick thinking of the driver of incoming train prevented great tragedy. Accusing the Netherlands of fascism across all their political parties — from the democrats to Geert Wilders’s anti-Islam party — Cavusoglu said, “All have the same mentality.”
Days earlier, Erdogan inflamed tensions, saying the Dutch government was “Nazi remnants, they are fascists.” He added, “I said I thought Nazism was over, but I was wrong. In fact, Nazism is alive in the West.”
Revving up the rhetoric against The Netherlands and Europe in general, Erdogan on Friday urged Turks in Europe to have five children, telling them, “You are Europe’s future.”
“From here I say to my citizens, I say to my brothers and sisters in Europe … Educate your children at better schools, make sure your family live in better areas, drive in the best cars, live in the best houses,” he added in a televised speech.
“Have five children, not three. You are Europe’s future. “This is the best answer to the rudeness shown to you, the enmity, the wrongs,” he said.
In yet another response to the tensions between Turkey and the EU, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu threatened to cancel last year’s agreement with the EU limiting the number of refugees that are allowed to enter Europe from Turkey. Soylu said he could “blow the mind” of the EU by sending 15,000 refugees per month to Europe.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu previously threatened to rip up the agreement.
Turkey is a serial breacher of human rights, is led by a despot and supports terror.

Hungary: DefMin opens military base set up to block refugees along Serbian border
Hungarian Minister of Defence Istvan Simicsko opened a new military base in Hercegszanto on the Hungarian-Serbian frontier, Monday, as Budapest ramps up border control to block refugees entering the country.
Simicsko greeted the soldiers, inspecting the facilities of the base, one of four sites being set up to stop the influx of migrants. Each of them will be able to operate as a full-scale military base with accommodation for 150 military officers.
The new bases are located in Hercegszanto, Bacsalmas, Madaras and Kelebia.

It should be noted that Gowdy did not give evidence for any of the names he raised possibly being the source of the leaks.
The South Carolina Republican first asked the FBI director if former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper “knew the name of the U.S. citizen that appeared in The New York Times and Washington Post?… Would he have access to an unmasked name?”
Gowdy asked similar questions about former CIA Director James Brennan, former National Security Advisor Susan Rice former White House advisor Ben Rhodes, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates.
Finally, Gowdy asked Comey if he “briefed President Obama on any calls involving Michael Flynn.”
“I’m not going to go get into either that case or any conversations I had with the president,” Comey answered.

The National Book Award goes to a ridiculous racist.
The 2015 National Book Award winner wrote that the police officers and firefighters who dashed in to save people in the World Trade Center on 9/11 were “menaces of nature” and “not human to me”.
After the National Book Foundation disgraced itself with its award to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s bizarre racist tract, Between the World and Me, in which white people, even if they’re saving lives after a terrorist attack, are not human, it decided to go one worse with its 2016 winner who insists that a post-racial society is a racist idea.
That’s Ibram X. Kendi, an assistant professor of African American History at the University of Florida, who won for Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. Like Coates, Kendi appears to come from a black nationalist family and Stamped is another black nationalist tract.
Stamped from the Beginning claims to narrate “the entire history of racist ideas, from their origins in fifteenth-century Europe”. Apparently racist ideas had not existed for all of human history until the Europeans invented them around the same time as the printing press and the muzzle-loaded rifle.
The book is based around villains and heroes. The villains include Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson and William Lloyd Garrison of the Liberator, and the heroine is Angela Davis, a Communist terrorist. But that is only to be expected from a black nationalist revisionist history in which an abolitionist founder of the Anti-Slavery Society is a villain and the defender of the greatest slave system in history is a heroine.
Kendi’s heroine was the advocate for a totalitarian Communist empire which used actual slave labor. His villain was a man who was dragged through the streets of Boston while fighting to free slaves.
But black nationalists, like most leftists, don’t object to slavery. They object to America.

The country is currently in a state of political civil war. Parts of the country are actively declaring war on an elected president. And vowing to remove him from office by any means.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has hired a former prosecutor under ex-U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara to pursue public corruption cases.
Howard Master previously worked for Bharara as deputy chief of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He focused on public corruption cases, including the prosecution of former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, according to the New York Daily News.
Schneiderman also has hired Eric Haren to work on public corruption cases, the News said. Haren was previously chief counsel to Democratic U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.
Both new hires will prioritize taking on the administration of President Donald Trump and holding the federal government accountable, according to the News.

Elizabeth Warren is a prog hero. She’s not especially popular back in her own state. And it’s not hard to see why. She keeps trying to be a national figure. That means constant publicity stunts for the left. All the while ignoring the hometown press. But now that she has to consider how to actually get reelected, she has decided to actually start paying attention to the local press.
Elizabeth Warren’s creative media-dodging habits are a running joke among her home-state press corps. Whenever the senator makes a public appearance, Massachusetts reporters know to keep one eye fixed on the exit doors.
But that might be changing.
In just the last week alone, the notoriously press-averse progressive icon held three open-to-media events back home, followed by lengthy huddles with reporters on a wide range of issues ranging from her Senate votes to Donald Trump’s wiretapping accusations to the 2020 race.
In Boston and Washington, where Warren is known for being as stingy with the media on Capitol Hill as back home, the sudden thaw has political operatives questioning what’s behind the change of heart.
In addition to standard refusals to answer questions, the senator has bolted out side doors to avoid interviews and gone to great lengths to avoid questions such as who did she vote for in the Democratic presidential primary.
But it’s the Republican efforts to shut out the press that are truly worrisome. #ShePersisted.
Warren is an unlikable cold fish. That’s why she’s a prog hero. Aside from her greed and her hatred for anyone who, unlike her, actually works for a living, she has no appeal. It’s no wonder she tries to avoid the press.

FBI Director Comey might be the single most irritating figure for both parties. With some officials that might be evidence of integrity, but with the FBI Director it’s instead an erratic sort of careerism in which he tries and fails to navigate a hostile partisan environment by alternately pandering to one side and then the other. While trying to avoid the appearance of doing so.
And you never entirely know which Comey will show up. The Comey that showed up to the hearings gave Democrats almost everything they wanted with lawyerly non-answers that could have been scripted by Hillary Clinton. Comey said enough for the media to draw all sorts of implications without being precise enough to be nailed down on anything factual.
And when it came to questions from Republicans, Comey stonewalled and stonewalled hard. This was a typical exchange.

Last week, the Knesset in Jerusalem passed a law barring the entry of visitors who have called for a boycott on Israel or are otherwise actively engaged in the Boycott, Sanctions, Divestment (BDS) movement, which has been the subject of several anti-boycott laws passed in US states. The new law bars the entry into Israel foreign nationals who either knowingly and publicly call for boycotting Israel or who represent an organization that calls for such a boycott.
The BDS campaign, as openly affirmed by its originators, aims for the gradual elimination of Israel and its replacement by an Arab-dominated state by means of economic, diplomatic and social ostracism of Israel and Israeli institutions and enterprises.
Its basis is the alleged illegal occupation of Palestinian Arabs by Israel and Israeli measures to which they are subject. The problem with this is that it is utterly false and rewrites history.
When speaking of “occupation,” BDS advocates speak with forked tongues. They regard every square inch of Israel as illegitimate and occupied but, when they speak of illegality, mislead many people into supposing they mean only the territories conquered by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War.
In any case, this is a political lie.

On April 16 a referendum will be held in Turkey, where voters can decide on constitutional amendments which will remove all cumbersome checks and balances to Erdo?an’s power. In his campaign to secure a ‘yes’, Erdo?an has admitted he has been planning for such a system since he was mayor of Istanbul in the 1990s. Furthermore, that his plans for an executive presidency will concentrate all power in the hands of one person.
This “Turkish-style” presidential system means Erdo?an will have the power to appoint and dismiss ministers and high-level state officials without the need for parliamentary approval. He will also be able to declare a state of emergency, issue decrees, dissolve parliament and call elections without being held to account. The president will not only be head of state but also head of government – the post of prime minister will be abolished, and in effect the judiciary will be subject to his control.

“Police in the Brussels neighborhood of Molenbeek have uncovered 51 groups with alleged ties to terror organizations, according to a confidential report released Monday on anti-terror measures in the country.
More than 8,600 houses and 22,668 residents in the area have been checked by authorities over the past year, according to Belgian newspaper De Morgen. Out of more than 1,600 organizations and businesses in Molenbeek, 102 are suspected of having ties to crime and another 51 are linked to terrorism.
Authorities have compiled a list of 72 individuals who need to be monitored for their suspected terror connections. The vast majority, 46, still reside in Belgium while 26 are believed to be in Syria. Twenty people on the list are currently in prison.
A positive finding in the report is that no known cases of Belgians leaving the country to fight in Syria have been reported over the past year…”

“Russia’s military will train Kurdish forces in Syria, the militia’s spokesman said Monday, in Moscow’s first agreement of its kind with the group that controls large parts of the country’s north.
The move by Russia, a longtime ally of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, is likely to anger Turkey, which considers the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to be a “terrorist” group.
“An agreement was signed between our units and Russian forces operating in Syria that will train us in modern military tactics,” YPG spokesman Redur Xelil said.
“This is the first agreement of its kind, although we have had previous cooperation (with the Russians) in Aleppo city,” he said.

“The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militias in Yemen toward the Kingdom on Monday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The missile was fired from the Yemeni capital Sanaa and targeted the southern Saudi city of Yemen, it said quoting a statement from the command of the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi rebels and supporting legitimacy in Yemen.
The missile was intercepted at around 6.30 p.m. Monday and destroyed without any casualties or damage on the ground.
The coalition forces immediately retaliated by attacking the missile’s launch site, the statement added.”
