  1. No desire in US to declare Pakistan terror sponsor: envoy (dawn, Mar 19, 2017)
    https://www.dawn.com/news/1321399/no-desire-in-us-to-declare-pakistan-terror-sponsor-envoy

“WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s new envoy in Washington, Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary, has said there’s no desire in the United States to declare Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism as both countries want to continue their longstanding relationship.

But former president Asif Ali Zardari saw a clear breach of faith in the US-Pakistan partnership and urged Pakistan to carry more of its own weight while increasing military and commercial cooperation with its allies.

Talking to Pakistani journalists at the embassy on Friday afternoon, Ambassador Chaudhary emphasised the need for re-establishing a multilateral forum, like the Quadrilateral Coordination Group, for reviving the Afghan peace talks.

In a piece he wrote for the Forbes magazine, Mr Zardari noted that the United States had invested billions of dollars in Pakistan since 9/11 attacks, which brought greater stability in the country but the “well of goodwill from which we [Pakistan] can draw is not endless”.

Responding to a question at his briefing, Mr Chaudhary said there’s “a tiny minority” in Washington, which keeps raising this issue of declaring Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism “but the bulk of American polity sees Pakistan as a partner in the war against terrorism”….”

“Three suicide bombers have killed four people and caused injury to eight others in a village near Maiduguri, a police spokesman said on Sunday.

A man and two women blew themselves up when they were challenged by a member of the civilian JTF, a government-approved militia group, just outside Maiduguri, the city worst hit by militant group Boko Haram’s eight-year insurgency.

The blasts, in the village of Umariri, occurred on Saturday around 9:00pm said Maiduguri police spokesman Victor Isuku…”

  3. North Korea tests newly developed high-thrust rocket engine

TOKYO (AP) — North Korea has conducted a ground test of a new type of high-thrust rocket engine that leader Kim Jong Un is calling a revolutionary breakthrough for the country’s space program, the North’s state media said Sunday.

Kim attended Saturday’s test at the Sohae launch site, according to the Korean Central News Agency, which said the test was intended to confirm the “new type” of engine’s thrust power and gauge the reliability of its control system and structural safety.

Kim called the test “a great event of historic significance” for the country’s indigenous rocket industry, the KCNA report said.

He also said the “whole world will soon witness what eventful significance the great victory won today carries” and claimed the test marks what will be known as the “March 18 revolution” in the development of the country’s rocket industry.

  4. China Pushes Back on U.S. Talk of ‘All Options’ Over North Korea
    by Nick Wadhams

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pushed back against the tougher U.S. line on North Korea, reiterating his country’s view that the only way to rein in its reclusive neighbor is through talks.

Wang spoke at a briefing in Beijing with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who in Seoul on Friday refused to rule out a preemptive strike against Pyongyang if the threat from its weapons program was deemed severe enough. While that’s largely in line with prior U.S. positions, Tillerson’s comments — and Twitter posts from President Donald Trump — signal the level of concern over North Korea is rising.

“The most important principle we have identified is that no matter what happens, we have to stay committed to diplomatic means as a way to seek a peaceful settlement,” Wang said on Saturday. “We hope all parties, including our friends from the United States, could size up the situation in a cool-headed and comprehensive fashion and arrive at a wise decision.”

New study finds no link between immigration and increased crime; just one problem
By Howard Portnoy March 18, 2017

You just know that a study is going to be unbiased when it opens with a quote from Donald Trump from 2015 in which he said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.”

Once having gotten that out of their system, associate sociology professor Robert Adelman and his team at the University of Buffalo get busy trying to prove that there is no link between immigration and crime rates. In order to make their case, Adelman et. al. examine census data and uniform crime data from the FBI over a 40-year period, 1970 to 2010.

Adelman offers the caveat that the relationship between immigration and crime is complex and that more research needs to be done. Amen to that.

The question of whether the team’s findings confirm their hypotheses is rendered moot by a fundamental flaw. Namely, the study proceeds from an invalid assumption. No one, including Donald Trump, has argued that allowing citizens of foreign nations to emigrate to this one through legal channels leads to more crime. The real issue is whether foreigners who enter the U.S. illegally swell the crime rates. (For the record, the word illegal appears in the study once, in the context of illegal labor markets.)

So, do immigrants who come here illegally increase the rate of crime? Even discounting the crime of illegal entry committed by every fence jumper, the answer is a resounding yes. The matter is so open-and-shut that even PolitiFact was forced to concede in September 2016 that Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity had spoken the truth when he said that illegal immigrants account for up to 75% of convictions for selected crimes:

    Now this is rich:

The head of Mexico’s governors’ association will lodge a complaint with the Organization of American States Saturday accusing President Trump of human rights violations, demanding the OAS help ensure protections for migrants facing raids or deportation from the U.S.

The Washington Times goes on to report that the complaint will be delivered personally, and that the governors also issued a lot of palaver about the economic importance of the border, meaning, open border on the northside (just try to get past a Mexican immigration officer without papers going south) as somehow necessary for both countries.

It’s the ultimate hypocrisy, starting with the appeal to the Organization of American States. That august body is the one that, despite its democratic charter, has allowed Venezuela to become a hellhole as bad as Cuba, except even less competently run, with a massive crime and corruption wave to boot. In the OAS’ eyes, the place is still a “democracy.”

So now the big concern for the OAS is “human rights” according to these governors. Not the human rights of having to live in Mexico, which is so corrupt and crime-ridden that schoolyard kids are exposed to beheadings, the Mexico of hanging bodies on bridges, or the Mexico of mass graves, often of migrants. Or, the Mexico where governors are found complicit at least in the mass disappearance of college students, as happened a couple years ago. No, the human rights violation here is the election of Donald Trump, his effort to enforce U.S. law and apparently, a newly carved out human “right” to be an illegal immigrant with no detention.

Here’s what’s really going on: These governors live in states that are highly dependent on remittances from illegals. It comes into banks where it pools for investment and unless remittance recipients spend it all at once someplace else, it serves as capital. That gives the governors their walking around money for their states.

  7. Rounding Up and Locking Down George Soros
    Larry UsoffMarch 18, 2017

Is there anything good that can be said about George Soros? Doing my research, it would appear that there isn’t. Not in my memory has there been a person so devoted to disruption, corruption, and perversion(of the political kind) as he is. Starting with his collaboration with the Nazis, aiding in the extermination of his fellow Jews and countrymen. Through his financial dealings, including “breaking the bank” of England, and manipulating the money of different countries, he has amassed a huge fortune and is one of the richest men in the world.

Back in August of 2016, the business paper, Investors Business Daily, ran a piece about Soros and his non-profit organizations…groups that were actually front-men for Hillary Clinton. The anti-Soros organization that investigated him dug up some interesting things too. In 2011, for example, Soros backed a group, “Extreme Polarization and Breakdown in Civil Discourse”, which was to conduct opposition reports(translation: dig up dirt they could use) on many conservative figures including Pamela Geller, David Horowitz and even the former Vice-President’s daughter Liz Cheney. This information(or dirt) was then given to another Soros group, the Center for American Progress(CAP) for action. Now, if that wasn’t enough, CAP was founded by…wait for it…John Podesta, who was at the time Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager! One last tidbit and then we’ll move along.

Still another group belonging to Soros was the Open Society Foundation, whose goal was to challenge Israel on the basis of their “racist” and “anti-democratic” policies. Now, it strikes me that this objective just has to be a huge case of BS! The ONLY truly democratic nation in the muddled Middle East IS Israel! As for “racism”, what race were they against? Arabs? Arabs are not a race. Muslims? Muslims are not a race. Blacks? Oh, there you might have a point except for the FACT that no blacks are oppressed in Israel. Soros and his minions do not want to allow any thoughts but theirs to be heard. He and his henchmen stifle debate and different ideas and large amounts of money are spent to achieve those goals.

  8. Will the Dutch Protect their ‘Decadence’ from Islamic ‘Redeemers’?

    by Giulio Meotti
    March 19, 2017 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10075/netherlands-decadence-islam

General elections in the Netherlands are over, but now begins a much bigger campaign: who will defend the famous Dutch freedoms?

Only in the Netherlands is it conceivable that a politician such as Geert Wilders, a brave maverick who for 13 years, 24 hours a day, has lived under police protection; held rallies while wearing a bulletproof vest; moved from one secret location to another one and was guarded as if he were an Asian potentate. The country has already had two political assassinations related to Islam: the politician Pim Fortuyn, and the filmmaker, Theo van Gogh. Another Dutch MP at the time, Ayaan Hirsi Ali — whose name, with Wilders’s, was next on the hit-list pinned with a knife to van Gogh’s corpse — ended up fleeing to the United States. Only Wilders’s protection, generously provided by the Dutch government, has so far avoided a third political murder.

  9. What They Do Not Tell You about Indonesia

    by Jacobus E. Lato
    March 19, 2017 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10049/what-they-do-not-tell-you-about-indonesia

My kampong [village] lies in the suburbs of Surabaya, the second biggest city in Indonesia. Densely packed in a narrow alley, it consists of more than forty houses, stacked like logs, with no gaps at all to sneak in between. A handful of residents work for the government or public schools; some run small household shops. Most residents are Muslim, except for three families who are Christian.

A handful of plants provide us with green, but just down the road scattered stores have been soaring: a big franchise department store, a gas station, banks with long rows of automatic teller machines and facilities that make us feel like a small part of growing Indonesia.

When we first moved here, it seemed ideal. There were only twelve families; they got together at events; we felt close. Communal meetings were held each month; the host would prepare snacks and even sometimes meals. If one of us were in the nearby hospital, we would usually drive together in groups to pay a visit after collecting small contributions to give the sick person. Only one lady, a convert to Islam, wore a headscarf; others only wore it when necessary: at public meetings, celebrations, or Independence Day, August 17.

Saturday nights were the long night. People sat outside on paving stones or rough and humble chairs, and discussed many matters, especially before elections. Indonesia was then under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a graduate of America’s Webster University.

Religious days were marked as moments of happiness and joy. People opened wide their hearts; heaven was coming down and moving us. We visited each other after Eid al Fitr’s early morning prayer. Everyone said, “Minal Aidin Wal Fa Idzin” (“Many happy returns”) and “Mohon Maaf Lahir Batin” (“Please forgive my wrongdoings”). The long-held tradition of Megengan, when families exchange food or snacks — not just Muslims but Christians, Catholics, Hindus and Buddhists — always preceded Ramadan.

    • Damn the Preacher is using good sense, but I wish he was using this to let the Christians back into the schools. I would say since there is a Moslem room there must be a Christian room.

  10. BREITBART – Sweden to Give Prison Guard Internships To New Migrants

Asylum Seekers from the Middle East are being trained to become prison guards in a new program at the Mariefred prison set up by the Swedish government.

The new program, initiated by the Swedish probation and prison system, aims to see 450 recent migrants and disabled people placed in various internships that include prison guards, cooks and other jobs within correctional facilities across the country. Justice Minister Morgan Johansson visited the Mariefred prison where two Iraqi asylum seekers are training as guards according to the Probation service website.

Mariefred prison chief Mohamed Gulied and project manager Helena Lönnkvist introduced the minister to the candidates enrolled in the program including the two Iraqis Khaled Taha and Dheyazan Sadeq who are also learning Swedish at the facility. ” I want to work, and am very happy here at Mariefred. Now I hope that I will manage basic education,” Khaled told the minister.

Helena Lönnkvist who is the project manager for the program said, “trainees become role models, both in our own operations and for the relatives and friends outside the Prison and Probation Service. Our hope is that they will want to stay and go on to permanent employment.”

Mohamed Gulied added, “We need to recruit and this is a good way into the profession,” and said he hoped to receive more migrants into the program.

So far the program has not run into a glaring issue that plagues many prisons across Europe, the growth of radical Islam and radicalization of inmates. In France, a report to the French National Assembly last year claimed that French prisons, in which 60 percent of inmates are Muslim, had become a breeding ground for radical Islamic indoctrination.

The situation in British prisons is not much better as the former chief inspector of prisons Nick Hardwick said in 2015 that prisons were a conduit for radical Islamic recruitment.

In HMP Gartree, a maximum security prison in the UK, entire cell blocks are run under a variation if Islamic sharia law according to reports.

“It is so bad non-Muslim prisoners are refusing to move there as they feel intimidated,” a source said and added, “there is huge pressure put on them to convert and a threat of violence if they don’t. The Muslim gangs have their own rules and use Sharia law to sort out disagreements. In effect, they are setting up their own prison within a prison.”

Sweden is also experiencing a surge of support for the Islamic State terror group due to fighters returning from the Middle East and spreading their extremist ideology according to the Swedish security service. As far back as 2006 reports emerged that radical Islamists were also recruiting in Swedish prisons as well.

  11. zero hedge – Intel Chair: “No Collusion Between Trump and Russia… Leak Is The Only Crime”

Just as was predicted, based on the expectations management being undertaken by high-ranking Democrats, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes confirmed on Sunday that he’s seen no evidence of collusion between President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

As The Hill reports, Nunes was asked during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” if he has seen any evidence of any collusion between “Trump world” and Russia to swing the 2016 presidential election.

“I’ll give you a very simple answer: ‘no,’ ” Nunes said. “Up to speed on everything I have up to this morning. No evidence of collusion.”

However, Nunes notes that the probe did discover one crime during the probe – related to the leaking of former Trump aide Michael Flynn’s name and transcript…

“The one crime we know that’s been committed is that one: the leaking of someone’s name …,”

“That’s what we’re trying to get to the bottom of: were there any other names that were unmasked, leaked and leaked out?”

And Rand Paul is demanding that whoever leaked transcript of former NSA Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russian ambassador should “go to jail”

Glenn Greenwald sums up the farce well, given the way these Russia conspiracies have drowned out other critical issues being virtually ignored under the Trump presidency, it’s vital that everything be done now to make clear what is based in evidence and what is based in partisan delusions. And most of what the Democratic base has been fed for the last six months by their unhinged stable of media, online, and party leaders has decisively fallen into the latter category, as even their own officials are now desperately trying to warn.

the intercept – g.greenwald- Key Democratic Officials Now Warning Base Not to Expect Evidence of Trump/Russia Collusion

From MSNBC politics shows to town hall meetings across the country, the overarching issue for the Democratic Party’s base since Trump’s victory has been Russia, often suffocating attention for other issues. This fixation has persisted even though it has no chance to sink the Trump presidency unless it is proven that high levels of the Trump campaign actively colluded with the Kremlin to manipulate the outcome of the U.S. election — a claim for which absolutely no evidence has thus far been presented.

The principal problem for Democrats is that so many media figures and online charlatans are personally benefiting from feeding the base increasingly unhinged, fact-free conspiracies — just as right-wing media polemicists did after both Bill Clinton and Obama were elected — that there are now millions of partisan soldiers absolutely convinced of a Trump/Russia conspiracy for which, at least as of now, there is no evidence. And they are all waiting for the day, which they regard as inevitable and imminent, when this theory will be proven and Trump will be removed.

Key Democratic officials are clearly worried about the expectations that have been purposely stoked and are now trying to tamp them down. Many of them have tried to signal that the beliefs the base has been led to adopt have no basis in reason or evidence.

The latest official to throw cold water on the MSNBC-led circus is President Obama’s former acting CIA chief Michael Morell. What makes him particularly notable in this context is that Morell was one of Clinton’s most vocal CIA surrogates. In August, he not only endorsed Clinton in the pages of the New York Times but also became the first high official to explicitly accuse Trump of disloyalty, claiming, “In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation.”

But on Wednesday night, Morell appeared at an intelligence community forum to “cast doubt” on “allegations that members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.” “On the question of the Trump campaign conspiring with the Russians here, there is smoke, but there is no fire at all,” he said, adding, “There’s no little campfire, there’s no little candle, there’s no spark. And there’s a lot of people looking for it.”

Obama’s former CIA chief also cast serious doubt on the credibility of the infamous, explosive “dossier” originally published by BuzzFeed, saying that its author, Christopher Steele, paid intermediaries to talk to the sources for it. The dossier, he said, “doesn’t take you anywhere, I don’t think.”

Morell’s comments echo the categorical remarks by Obama’s top national security official, James Clapper, who told Meet the Press last week that during the time he was Obama’s DNI, he saw no evidence to support claims of a Trump/Russia conspiracy. “We had no evidence of such collusion,” Clapper stated unequivocally. Unlike Morell, who left his official CIA position in 2013 but remains very integrated into the intelligence community, Clapper was Obama’s DNI until just seven weeks ago, leaving on January 20.

Perhaps most revealing of all are the Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee — charged with investigating these matters — who recently told BuzzFeed how petrified they are of what the Democratic base will do if they do not find evidence of collusion, as they now suspect will likely be the case. “There’s a tangible frustration over what one official called ‘wildly inflated’ expectations surrounding the panel’s fledgling investigation,” BuzzFeed’s Ali Watkins wrote.

Moreover, “several committee sources grudgingly say, it feels as though the investigation will be seen as a sham if the Senate doesn’t find a silver bullet connecting Trump and Russian intelligence operatives.” One member told Watkins: “I don’t think the conclusions are going to meet people’s expectations.”

What makes all of this most significant is that officials like Clapper and Morell are trained disinformation agents; Clapper in particular has proven he will lie to advance his interests. Yet even with all the incentive to do so, they are refusing to claim there is evidence of such collusion; in fact, they are expressly urging people to stop thinking it exists. As even the law recognizes, statements that otherwise lack credibility become more believable when they are ones made “against interest.”

Media figures have similarly begun trying to tamp down expectations. Ben Smith, the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed, which published the Steele dossier, published an article yesterday warning that the Democratic base’s expectation of a smoking gun “is so strong that Twitter and cable news are full of the theories of what my colleague Charlie Warzel calls the Blue Detectives — the left’s new version of Glenn Beck, digital blackboards full of lines and arrows.” Smith added: “It is also a simple fact that while news of Russian actions on Trump’s behalf is clear, hard details of coordination between his aides and Putin’s haven’t emerged.” And Smith’s core warning is this:

Trump’s critics last year were horrified at the rise of “fake news” and the specter of a politics shaped by alternative facts, predominantly on the right. They need to be careful now not to succumb to the same delusional temptations as their political adversaries, and not to sink into a filter bubble which, after all, draws its strength not from conservative or progressive politics but from human nature.

And those of us covering the story and the stew of real information, fantasy, and — now — forgery around it need to continue to report and think clearly about what we know and what we don’t, and to resist the sugar high that comes with telling people exactly what they want to hear.

For so long, Democrats demonized and smeared anyone trying to inject basic reason, rationality, and skepticism into this Trump/Russia discourse by labeling them all Kremlin agents and Putin lovers. Just this week, the Center for American Progress released a report using the language of treason to announce the existence of a “Fifth Column” in the U.S. that serves Russia (similar to Andrew Sullivan’s notorious 2001 decree that anyone opposing the war on terror composed an anti-American “Fifth Column”), while John McCain listened to Rand Paul express doubts about the wisdom of NATO further expanding to include Montenegro and then promptly announced: “Paul is working for Vladimir Putin.”

But with serious doubts — and fears — now emerging about what the Democratic base has been led to believe by self-interested carnival barkers and partisan hacks, there is a sudden, concerted effort to rein in the excesses of this story. With so many people now doing this, it will be increasingly difficult to smear them all as traitors and Russian loyalists, but it may be far too little, too late, given the pitched hysteria that has been deliberately cultivated around these issues for months. Many Democrats have reached the classic stage of deranged conspiracists where evidence that disproves the theory is viewed as further proof of its existence, and those pointing to it are instantly deemed suspect.

A formal, credible investigation into all these questions, where the evidence is publicly disclosed, is still urgently needed. That’s true primarily so that conspiracies no longer linger and these questions are resolved by facts rather than agenda-driven anonymous leaks from the CIA and cable news hosts required to feed a partisan mob.

It’s certainly possible to envision an indictment of a low-level operative like Carter Page, or the prosecution of someone like Paul Manafort on matters unrelated to hacking, but the silver bullet that Democrats have been led to expect will sink Trump appears further away than ever.

But given the way these Russia conspiracies have drowned out other critical issues being virtually ignored under the Trump presidency, it’s vital that everything be done now to make clear what is based in evidence and what is based in partisan delusions. And most of what the Democratic base has been fed for the last six months by their unhinged stable of media, online, and party leaders has decisively fallen into the latter category, as even their own officials are now desperately trying to warn.

[FULL INTERVIEW] Rep. Devin Nunes Interviwed by Chris Wallace On “Fox News Sunday”

  12. France: Thousands march against racism and police brutality in Paris

Thousands of people took the streets of Paris, Sunday to demonstrate against police brutality and racism.

Leftist activists and members of the trade unions gathered at Place de la Nation, marching towards Place de la Republique. Protesters chanted anti-racist slogans, calling for police accountability, bearing portraits of thirteen people that died while in police custody.

Similar marches took place in other major French cities, including Dijon, Nantes, Lyon, and Strasbourg, among others.

  13. Germany: SPD’s Gabriel steps aside for Schulz, longs for EU future with Macron

President of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) Sigmar Gabriel officially announced his resignation as the party head and nominated Martin Schulz to become his successor and thus the party’s chancellor candidate at an SPD conference in Berlin, Sunday.

“The people want a new departure now. And what they don’t want is the continuation of the coalition. And because for this you need credible representatives … I suggested to make Martin Schulz the chancellor candidate”, Gabriel stated.

SOT, Sigmar Gabriel, leader of SPD (German): “The people want a new departure now. And what they don’t want is the continuation of the coalition. And because for this you need credible representatives, who not like me, I admit this with a big conviction, represent this big coalition, I suggested to make Martin Schulz the chancellor candidate. And as he can only be this by also leading the SPD, I step down today and Martin should become the new president of the party, my dear comrades.”

SOT, Sigmar Gabriel, leader of SPD (German): “And imagine that Emmanuel Macron becomes President in France and Martin Schulz becomes Chancellor. How much we would be able to change in this Europe, dear friends and comrades!”

  14. Turkey: Europeans ‘would revive gas chambers if they weren’t ashamed’ – Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Europe’s “masquerade ball is over” in a rally in Istanbul, Sunday, hitting out against Germany and Netherlands for banning rallies for a ‘Yes’ vote in Turkey’s upcoming constitutional referendum”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (Turkish): “The latest things we have experienced in Europe are showing us that the battle against our country and our goal is now in a new stage. Those who tried to come at us with their men, with the terrorists that they support and gave guns to, with the spies they bought with a dollar, are now in the field. My brothers and sisters, the masquerade ball is over.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (Turkish): “They set aside diplomacy. They do not have the urge to hide their intentions and cannot hide the discomfort they feel from Turkey, which is growing stronger. They are throwing up their hatred, rancour, bile against our country, our people, even against all Muslims, every day on TV screens and in newspaper headlines because they are aware of the importance of April 16, which is not something that they can delegate to their wholesalers. They know very well that there is a chance that not just the governance of Turkey but the system which they have been exploiting, using it in the way they like, is to be demolished on April 16.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (Turkish): “They would revive gas chambers and concentration camps, if they weren’t ashamed. Can we forget about Srebrenica, can we forget the ones who killed, martyred eight hundred and thirty four thousand Bosnians in Srebrenica? That is their mentality, that is Dutch mentality. And there are more, that is why they get disturbed when we say fascist. They are disturbed when we say that this is Nazi mentality. And their partners in Europe immediately cover for them. Primarily Merkel, she is covering for them too. You are applying the same mentality in Germany. To whom? To my brothers and sisters in Germany.”

    • If the Moslems keep pushing invaders into Europe the gas chambers are a possibility in the future, toss a coin to decide which will use them.

Jerusalem (AFP) – Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday threatened to destroy Syrian air defence systems after they fired ground-to-air missiles at Israeli warplanes carrying out strikes.

“The next time the Syrians use their air defence systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation,” Lieberman said on Israeli public radio.

Israeli warplanes hit several targets in Syria on Friday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the strikes targeted weapons bound for Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah movement.

Syria’s military said it had downed one of the Israeli planes and hit another as they were carrying out the pre-dawn strikes near the famed desert city of Palmyra that it recaptured from jihadists this month.

  17. Senate worried CIA’s psychic program was part of mind control plot

“I am glad that this classified and I believe that it should stay classified.”

Buried in the STARGATE section of the CREST release is a letter from Congressman Charlie Rose, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Evaluation, regarding the Intelligence Community’s psychic program. Although short, the letter highlights a concern that was to be repeated by many outside of government for decades – that the program was part of CIA “mind control” activities, where in some cases “the rights of individuals were violated.”

According to the letter to the other Committee members, this was the issue that first brought their attention to the matter. The fear wasn’t entirely unjustified, as one program ended at the same time the other began, and the two programs shared some rather infamous personnel.

[…]The letter goes on to say that the Committee hadn’t made “any determination to endorse the experimentation as valid or invalid, [but] it does find that continued activity in this field may offer promise in applications to intelligence problems.” Therefore, Congressman Rose was scheduling a briefing from Doctors Puthoff and Targ, who were involved in the project.

[…]Warning about people’s sensitivity to the strangeness of parapsychology, and that the “uniformed” (likely a typo for “uninformed”) “would label such research more mind control experimentation,” Congressman Rose argued that this should all be kept confidential. According to a memo summarizing the later briefing, Congressman Rose again argued that the information should all stay classified.

According to a final note from Congressman Rose, the project was fully supported by the House Standing Intelligence Oversight Committee and the House Armed Service Appropriations Committee.

Thanks in part to Congress’s secretive support, these programs were officially kept running at least until the early 1990s.
