    Feminists joined Muslims in an Arab call to prayer during an anti Trump protest. One of the women was wearing a pink p*ssy hat while she happily submitted to Islam by kneeling with Muslims during their prayer. Islam and feminism go together so beautifully because Islam has done wonders for the women’s movement. Wearing medieval costumes, female genital mutilation and not being allowed to go out in public without a male relative is so progressive!

    “Students from the Tulsa Oklahoma Peace Academy were looking forward to meeting with their state representative during the annual Muslim Day at the Capitol event Thursday. According to a report in the Huffington Post, they came face-to-face with bigotry and hate.

    They were greeted by Republican Representative John Bennett’s assistant who handed them a questionnaire which they were told they were required to fill out before they would be given access to the representative. According to Adam Soltani, executive director for Oklahoma’s Council of American-Islamic Relations, the questions the students were presented with were filled with ignorance and hate.

    Here is a sampling of the questions the students faced:

    *“The Koran, the sunna of Mohammed and Sharia Law of all schools say that the husband can beat his wife. Do you beat your wife?”

    *“I have heard that, according to accepted Islamic sources, Mohammed, at age of 49, married a 6-year-old girl, and that he had sex with her when he was 52 and she was only 9 years old. Is that really true?”

    *“Sharia law says that it must rule over the kafirs, the non-Muslims. Do you agree with this?”

    *“The Koran says: The unbelievers are your inveterate enemy. (4:101). The Koran also says that unbelievers are the ‘vilest of all creatures’ (98:6) and ‘the worst of animals’ (8:55). What hope is there of coexistence when Mohammed teaches practicing Muslims to have this attitude toward non-Muslims?” (Emphasis in original)

    Once he was informed of the incident, Soltani took to Facebook with an indignant video rebuke. “I have just been informed by some of our community that Representative John Bennett- who in my opinion, at this point, doesn’t even deserve to be called a representative- is refusing to meet with Muslims unless they answer questions from an Islamophobic hate group called Act for America (ACT).”

    According to the same source, Bennett himself responded in news outlet Tulsa world by confirming the use of the questionnaire but claiming that the questions, in fact, were “based on passages from the Quran and other Islamic texts.” Speaking out on the controversy, the Southern Poverty Law Centre issued a statement calling ACT the “largest grass-roots anti-Muslim group in America.”

    As for Bennett, he has a long history of anti-Muslim comments in his repertoire, calling Islam a “cancer” that needed to be excised from America in 2014. He has also famously claimed that “Islam is not even a religion” and “there is no difference between moderate Islam and extreme Islam.”

    The Oklahoma Democratic Party has strenuously called out both Bennett over the incident and the Republican Party in general. “It is time for our state leaders to stand up against bigotry! Bennett’s continued unprofessional leadership is its own ‘cancer’ on the Oklahoma legislature, and it’s time for Republicans to make it clear that they do not support Bennett and his hate.””

    “Sweden’s Integration Minister Ylva Johansson has done a U-turn after she told the BBC that the number of reports of sex crimes in Sweden was dropping.

    During a recent interview with the BBC, the minister said “we can see that the level is going down, and going down, and going down.”

    However, this isn’t the case. The latest stats actually show a 13 percent increase in reported sex crimes in Sweden in 2016, and a general increase over the last ten years (more on this later).

    Swedish social media users – including MPs, economists, and criminologists – flocked to Twitter to point out the minister’s mistake following her TV appearance.

    The Moderate party’s labour policy spokesperson Elisabeth Svantesson was among those to criticize Johansson.

    “We don’t need more fake news,” she wrote on Twitter, calling for the minister to explain herself.

    “In what way is the number of sex crimes decreasing?” she added….”

    • Syria: US troops spotted in armoured convoy inside Manbij, Syria

      US troops were spotted in a convoy of armoured vehicles in the Syrian city of Manbij, Saturday.

      The US armored vehicles will be concentrated in north Manbij to conduct the demarcation between the forces of the Manbij Military Council and Euphrates Shield troops.

      Fighting between the Manbij Military Council and Euphrates Shield troops reportedly continues in the areas to the west of Manbij.

    • Syria’s Water Cut Off By Turkey Following McCain, Erdogan Meeting

      Just a matter of days after John McCain’s “unusual” trip to Syria and Turkey, the Turkish government has cut off water supplies from the Euphrates River into northern Syria, violating international conventions on water rights.

      While some measure of stability has returned to pockets of northern Syria following the Syrian Army’s recent liberation of al-Qaeda from Aleppo and elsewhere, external forces seem determined to keep the region volatile, regardless of the cost. In the latest example of aggressive foreign intervention in Syria, Turkey, which has long played an antagonistic role in Syria’s nearly six-year-long conflict, has now cut off the flow of the Euphrates River into Syria, depriving the nation of one of its primary sources of water.

      According to the Kurdish Hawar News Agency, Turkey cut water supplies to Syria around Feb. 23, which subsequently forced a hydroelectric plant at the Tishrin Dam to shut down while also significantly reducing water levels on its associated reservoir. The dam supplies both water and power to key parts of northern Syria, such as the city of Manbij and other parts of the predominantly Kurdish Kobani Canton.

      The dam is one of several major dams along the Euphrates River. Just downstream from Tishrin lies the Tabqa Dam and its reservoir Lake Assad, which supplies Aleppo with most of its power and drinking water, as well as irrigation water for over 640,000 hectares (2,500 square miles) of farmland. A city official in Manbij told Hawar that the city would provide generator fuel to civilians to help cope with the blackout that has resulted from the river being cut off. The same official added that Turkey had “violated the international conventions of water and rivers energy by cutting off Euphrates water.”

      This is not the first time Turkey has deprived Syrians of water as a means to advance their political goals in the region. Turkey previously cut the river off in May of 2014, causing water levels on Lake Assad to drop by over 20 feet and creating the potential for genocide by means of dehydration. By blocking the river, Turkey threatens Iraqi civilians as well. Major urban centers like Mosul, whose water supplies largely depend on reservoirs fed by the Euphrates, could be gravely impacted if the river continues to be blocked.

      The act of cutting off the river is not unprecedented, but its timing is peculiar. Just days prior to Turkey’s act, U.S. Senator John McCain “secretly” visited the Kobani Canton, the very region that now finds itself without water, before heading to Turkey, where he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the senator’s office, “Senator McCain’s visit was a valuable opportunity to assess dynamic conditions on the ground in Syria and Iraq.” It adds that McCain looks forward to working with the Trump administration and military leaders “to optimize our approach” on fighting the Islamic State.

      While the U.S. has backed the Kurds in their fight to keep their territories along the Syrian-Turkish border free of terrorist influence, it has come at the cost of greatly complicating diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Turkey. For example, in early 2016, Erdogan dramatically demanded that the U.S. choose between an alliance with Turkey or with the Syrian Kurds. The diplomatic stand-off has since reached new heights of tension, with Turkey threatening to invade Kurdish-held Manbij less than two weeks ago. Manbij is suffering the most from Turkey’s blockage of the Euphrates, suggesting that the move could be intended to destabilize the Kurds before something more drastic takes place.

      It also warrants mentioning that despite Erdogan’s and McCain’s claims that they are eager to “defeat” the Islamic State and other terrorist factions, both have close ties to those very same groups. This, of course, suggests that McCain’s visit, as well as recent moves by Turkey, have ulterior motives that have yet to be publicly expressed.

      For example, McCain has been so intent on removing Assad from power that he has fostered relationships with the Syria’s “moderate rebels” and its more notorious opposition factions such as the Islamic State. Photographic evidence has confirmed this, with one infamous photo showing McCain posing with Khalid al-Hamad – a “moderate” rebel who gained notoriety after a video of him eating the heart of a Syrian Army soldier went viral online. McCain has also admitted meeting with ISIS on national television, going so far as to acknowledge that he is still in contact with the infamous terrorist group.

      Erdogan, for his part, was revealed to be a major player in the smuggling of Islamic State oil out of Syria for sale on the global market. It was these oil sales that enabled the Islamic State to grow into what it is today and to become one of the world’s most well-funded terror groups.

      With such connections now well-documented, it seems unlikely that McCain and Erdogan discussed how to defeat the Islamic State. Based on the evidence, it seems much more likely that both remain eager to destabilize the region due to their shared goal of deposing Assad. With Turkey already working to destabilize Northern Syria by cutting off key resources, we will soon see what other measures may have been discussed during this “secret” meeting.

    “Over the past few months, relations (between Iran and France) have considerably developed. There are projects being realised, contracts being signed,” he said.

    But “financial circuits need to be normalised. It’s our aim, our will – even if it can’t be done in a day.”

    Trust must be built “to allow companies – if they so wish – to have financing channels that are safe and efficient”, Sapin said.

    “An EU-wide ban on Turkish politicians’ campaigning in the bloc has been suggested by Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern. Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci still plans to visit Turkish voters in Germany.

    Kern told the German newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” that Europe should protect its individual member nations from President Erdogan’s outspoken drive to win over expatriate Turks ahead of April’s Turkish referendum on boosting his constitutional powers.

    The latest strains in EU-Turkish relations center on Ankara’s arrest of German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel and rejections on security grounds by the German towns of Guggenau, and Frechen near Cologne, of gatherings at which visiting Turkish ministers were to have made campaign appearances.

    Austria’s chancellor said an EU-wide ban on Turkish politicians’ campaigning inside Europe would ease Turkish pressure on individual EU nations such as Germany.

    “With Turkey embroiled in a row with Germany over the latter’s decision to ban Turkish ministers from holding events in two German cities, the Netherlands has irked Turkish officials by taking a similar stance.

    The Dutch government said on March 3 it opposed plans by Turkish authorities to hold a referendum campaign rally in Rotterdam, saying it would inform Ankara of its opposition to the “undesirable” move.

    Earlier, the leader of an association of Dutch Turks said Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu was planning to attend the March 11 rally, hoping to persuade the Netherlands’ hundreds of thousands of dual citizens to vote “yes” in the April 16 constitutional referendum on whether to shift Turkey’s current parliamentary system to an executive presidency.

    Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte issued a statement via Facebook, saying the Netherlands is not a place for other countries’ election rallies.

    “Egypt’s Army said in a statement Saturday evening that security forces had arrested 12 “extremely dangerous” leaders of Ansar Bait Al-Maqdis, known as “Sinai Province” in central Sinai.

    The statement said the apprehended leaders were arrested while they held meeting to plan a range of “deadly” attacks in the near future.

    Egypt has been battling waves of militant attacks in North Sinai, centred mainly in Rafah, Shiekh Zuewied and Arish citiessince the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, following nation-wide protests against his rule.

    Some attacks have reached other parts of the country, including the capital.

    Militants have killed hundreds of security forces over the course of the insurgency. The army has said hundreds of militants have been killed in its campaigns.

    In November 2014, the Sinai based militant group Ansar Bait Al-Maqdis pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group.”

    “The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said Afghanistan will not recognize Durand Line as a formal border between Afghanistan and Pakistan as he reacted towards Pakistan’s move to close the transit and travel routes between the two countries.

    “The Govt of Pakistan has no legal authority to dictate terms on the Durand line.while we wish freedom for the people of #FATA from FCR and other repressive measures, we remind the Govt of #Pakistan that #Afghanistan hasn’t and will not recognize the #Durand line.” Karzai said in a Twitter post.

    The closure of the routes by Pakistan has resulted into growing tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.

    The Pakistani authorities decided to close the routes following a series of attacks last month which led to the death of scores of people while hundreds of others were wounded.

    The attacks resulted into escalation of tensions between the officials of the two countries as the top diplomats were summoned both by Islamabad and Kabul regarding the presence of the alleged terrorists sanctuaries on the soils of the two countries.

    Islamabad handed over a list of at least 76 terrorists demanding Kabul to take actions against them which they alleged are involved in a series of attacks using the Afghan soil.

    However, the Afghan officials are saying that the leadership councils of both the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network are based in key cities of Pakistan and in response to Islamabad’s list handed over a list of 85 top Taliban and Haqqani terrorist networks leaders along with a list of their sanctuaries.”

    “At least three commanders of the Taliban group were killed in an airstrike conducted by the Afghan Air Force in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

    The Ministry of Interior (MoI) in a statement said the airstrike was carried out late on Saturday night in Imam Sahib district.

    The statement further added that fifteen Taliban insurgents including three commanders of the group identified as Qari Mazlum, Qari Hejran, and Farooqi were killed in the airstrike.

    At least three Taliban insurgents were also wounded in the airstrike, MoI said, adding that five vehicles and some weapons were also destroyed…”

    “U.S.-backed Iraqi forces launched on Sunday a new push toward the Islamic State-held old city center of Mosul, on the western bank of the Tigris river, an Iraqi military spokesman said.

    Iraqi forces are fighting their way toward the old center of the city, advancing from the south and the southwest, Brigadier-General Yahya Rasool, spokesman for the joint operations command, told state-run television.

    Iraqi forces captured the eastern side of Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting and launched their attack on the districts that lie west of the Tigris river on Feb. 19.

    Their advance in western Mosul paused over the past 48 hours because of bad weather…”

    “Malaysia has arrested six foreigners and one Malaysian for suspected links to militant groups including Islamic State, the police chief said on Sunday.

    The Southeast Asian nation has been on high alert since suicide bombers and gunmen linked to Islamic State launched multiple attacks in Jakarta, the capital of neighboring Indonesia, in January 2016.

    A grenade attack on a bar on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, in June last year wounded eight people. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, the first of such attacks on Malaysian soil.

    Malaysia has arrested hundreds over the last few years for suspected links to militant groups.

    In the latest arrests made between Feb. 21 and Feb. 26, one Malaysian and one Indonesian were detained for planning to launch a large-scale car bomb attack using a “vehicle borne improvised explosive device,” before leaving to join IS in Syria, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement.

    The two were part of an Islamic State cell that received instructions from Muhammad Wanndy Muhammad Jedi – a known Malaysian IS fighter in Syria.

    One East Asian, with a fake student visa, had connections to an East Asian militant group that sends its members to Malaysia before heading to Syria to join Islamic State, Khalid said.

    Four Yemenis arrested were suspected of being part of a Yemeni insurgent group. They were also part of a syndicate forging travel documents.

    Police seized multiple international passports and 270,000 ringgit ($60,650) in cash in different currencies from the four.”

    “Islamic State militants have severely damaged a major Roman monument in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, an antiquities official said after visiting the site on Saturday.

    Under heavy Russian air cover, the Syrian army and allied militias drove the jihadist group out of the UNESCO world heritage site on Thursday, two months after it had seized it in a surprise advance.

    It was the second time the city had been recaptured from the militants in the course of Syria’s six-year war.

    Antiquities official Wael Hafyan said he had seen serious damage to the Tetrapylon, a square stone platform with matching structures of four columns positioned at each corner. Only four of the 16 columns were still standing.

    “The terrorists detonated it… the damage is extensive,” he told Reuters. However, he said some of the fallen columns were not destroyed and could be restored using modern conservation techniques.

    There was also harm, but less serious, to the facade of a Roman theater, where the damage was to a part that was restored, not original, he said.

    Hafyan said the militants had caused less destruction during their second occupation of the city than in their first, when they ruined an 1,800-year-old monumental arch and the nearly 2,000-year-old Temple of Baalshamin…”

  18. Trump asks Congress to probe alleged illicit campaign investigations

    Washington (AFP) – President Donald Trump is asking Congress to probe “potentially politically motivated investigations” during the 2016 campaign, the White House said Sunday.

    The announcement came one day after Trump took to Twitter to accuse his predecessor Barack Obama of tapping his phones ahead of the November election, without providing evidence of the explosive charge.

    An Obama spokesman has denied Trump’s accusation as “simply false.”

    In his statement, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer referred to unspecified reports of “potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election” as “very troubling.”

    “President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016,” Spicer said.

    He added that there would be no more comment on the matter from Trump or the White House.

    Trump leveled his charges against Obama early Saturday, at the end of a week in which his administration was battered by controversy over communications between Russian officials and some of his senior aides including Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

      The Netherland’s Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders expressed optimism about the upcoming Dutch election on March 15, as he spoke to journalists in Amsterdam, Sunday.

      Speaking at an interview in front of the ‘De Telegraaf’ building, the Netherlands’ largest newspaper, Wilders said his party won the election before it has even started, as issues like immigration dominate the public debate, among others.

    “An 18-year-old Somali asylum seeker is said to have sexually abused two elderly men in a retirement home and attacking the wife of one of the men leading to her death. He will now go to trial.

    The Somali is said to have entered a retirement home in the town of Neuenhaus at around 3 am on 22 October of last year by sneaking in through an unlocked door. He is accused of then proceeding to sexually abuse two elderly men and beating an 87-year-old woman, Neue Osnabrück Zeitung reports.

    In a press release, the Osnabrück prosecutor said that the asylum seeker first entered the room of a 59-year-old man who was half paralysed by a stroke, touching him inappropriately. Police say he had the intention of raping the man. He then moved on into another room where he sexually abused an 87-year-old man.

    After noticing that the man shared a room with his wife, the Somali teen beat her bloody, fearing that she might shout out and he would be caught. She was hit so hard that the prosecutor said she later died after choking on her own blood.

    The 18-year-old was caught in the hallway of the home by one of the nurses on duty, but fled the scene before police could arrive. He was arrested later that day.

    According to Alexander Retemeyer, spokesman for the prosecution office, there was no previous connection between the attacker and his victims.

    The public prosecutor’s office has announced that the asylum seeker will be put on trial for murdering the elderly woman. He is currently being held in a psychiatric hospital….”

    Meanwhile, at an election campaign event in Amsterdam, Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders also resorted to extreme-right comparisons, calling Erdogan an “Islamo-fascist leader.”

    “We will produce a series of films about our subjects in an attempt to find out what is the best way to handle refugees, what these uprooted people value in their new homes, and whether their new neighbourhoods welcome or reject them,” writes The Guardian.

    Managing editor at El País, David Alandete, said that with the project his newspaper: “Aim[s] to tell [migrants’] stories: their pain, fears, wishes and projects. By following a soccer team in Spain we hope to reveal what the human side of the crisis is.”

    Decrying “stereotypes and prejudices” as Bundestag elections are due to take place in Germany later this year, editor Eva Thöne added that Spiegel Online “hope[s] to find a way to combine moving stories and portraits with a differentiated view on immigration”.

    Funding the project is the European Journalism Centre, whose partners include several projects funded by Hungarian billionaire George Soros including the Open Society Foundations and Open Society Georgia Foundation, via a grant by the globalist Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    The 1000-page report by the Henry Jackson Society examines all terror convictions and suicide attacks inspired by Islamism in the UK between 1998 and 2015. It warns “Islamism-inspired terrorism remains the principal terrorism threat”.

    The report recorded 269 convictions during the period, involving 253 individuals. 72 per cent of those who committed Islamism-related offences (IROs) were British nationals. 16 per cent were converts to Islam.

    The report states: “The 269 Islamism-related offences (IROs) comprise 135 distinct terrorism cases.

    “The rate of offending increased in the five-year period between 2011 and 2015 compared to the 13-year period between 1998 and 2010.

    “IROs doubled in five years (increasing from an average of 12 to 23 per year) while distinct terrorism cases almost tripled (from five per year to 14 per year).”

    The most common place of arrest for IROs were ethnically diverse areas, with London accounting for 42 per cent of the total, and Birmingham 14 per cent.

    The 2011 census showed just 45 per cent of London’s population belonging to the white British category, whilst a 2013 report found that fewer than a third of schoolchildren in Birmingham were white.

    The study found “little correlation between involvement in terrorism and educational achievement and employment status”, with a quarter of IROs having been committed by individuals who had some form of higher education.

    According to the report, 22 per cent of the people convicted had attended terrorist training camps while 44 per cent had direct links to a proscribed terror organisation, the most common of which were the UK-based al-Muhajiroun, al-Qaeda (10 per cent overall) and Islamic State.

    Prevent, the government’s major deradicalisation program, has been attacked by activists, unions and other bodies for being “racist”, and discriminatory towards Muslims.

    Conservative MP Lucy Allan last month reported that increasing pressure on teachers to refer children to the Prevent Strategy for reasons other than radical Islam has led to schools considering whether attendance at a fathers’ rights march or a protest against badger culls could qualify a pupil for referral.

    And in January, a 15-year-old schoolboy who thought “Muslim women shouldn’t be allowed to wear the niqab”, was identified as a potential terrorist and put through the government’s strictest de-radicalisation programme.”

  30. Genius hack for liberty? San Francisco withdraws from MOU with FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force

    The annoyance of San Francisco doing something that seems really stupid about public safety is the obvious hook here, and most commentators have jumped right on it.

    Rick Moran’s reaction at PJ Media is typical (and, I want to emphasize, understandable):

    John Crew, a retired lawyer who works with CAIR and the ACLU…is overjoyed that the city will no longer be a part of the task force…

    “I’m not the least bit concerned,” Crew said.

    Too bad the rest of us don’t share his confidence — or his ignorance.

    Crew and his allies are celebrating the withdrawal of their city from the JTTF, but isn’t that sort of like having a party for removing the smoke detectors from your house? This senseless, knee-jerk reaction against anything we try to do to protect ourselves from terrorism may get a lot of Americans killed because of San Francisco’s mindless opposition to the federal government.

    Moran may be right. As he and others point out, the JTTF has prevented at least 93 Islamist terror attacks since 2001. JTTF officials emphasize that in most cases, the key to early detection and effective response is two-way cooperation with local law enforcement.

    It’s possible that if the San Francisco Police Department doesn’t update its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the JTTF, and resume participating on the same basis it has since the JTTF was formed, San Francisco will basically become a sanctuary city for terrorists.

    That could have a wider impact than putting the people of San Francisco at risk. A sanctuary city for terrorists would allow them to plan and organize inside the United States and attack anywhere, without having to cross guarded borders to get to a target site. It’s a legitimate concern, not just for San Franciscans or others in the Bay Area, but for everyone in the contiguous 48.

    That said, however, this is a teachable moment. Not about “cities’ rights,” which don’t exist, but about being mesmerized by organization and convention.

    Here are a few questions to ponder. One, what did we do before the days of FBI-chaired JTTFs? Basically, we lacked a vehicle for the routine sharing of information. It was done on an ad hoc basis, but when it was obviously necessary, people found a way to do it. (Note that this is about information-sharing between levels of law enforcement. It is not about the famous Clinton-era “wall” between DOJ/FBI and national intelligence.)

    It’s undoubtedly better for some purposes to have a vehicle for routine information-sharing. But with years of experience at their backs now, does the lack of an MOU and full official participation in a JTTF mean that the officers of SFPD, the FBI, and other participants in federally chartered organizations can neither share information, nor figure out when to?

    The JTTF framework regularizes interactions, to be sure, and certifies a certain homogenization of view and behavior. Because of political considerations, that homogenization by policy is why San Francisco has pulled out. San Francisco doesn’t agree with the federal posture.

    No question that that’s a trust issue, for the rest of us as much as for San Francisco. But before you go high-order on me, think this through just a little more.

    Theoretically, SFPD pulling out of the task force means that San Francisco can’t be trusted to alert other agencies to information its police have that may relate to terrorism. Right?

    But how do we know that SFPD would forward that locally-acquired information, even if the city renewed the MOU with the JTTF?

    We don’t. San Francisco could remain an official JTTF partner, and still withhold information for political reasons.

    It’s the local police department that retains the discretion to forward or withhold information, with or without an MOU with the JTTF.

    I’m sure SFPD had taken exhaustive account of this before letting the MOU expire and pulling out of the JTTF, which clearly is being done as a political demonstration. Now, it is absolutely possible that a mistake in judgment or vision, on the part of the San Francisco authorities, will result in an increased terrorist threat to either the Bay Area or the rest of the country. But that could happen anyway, since San Francisco is always free to withhold information and cooperation, MOU or not.

    The teaching point here is that we need to think hard about what advantages in operations and security we really buy, when we federalize the organization of everything we ask government to do. Do we actually need to set up all the structures we have today under federal control or supervision?

    We might just find out that we can still thwart terrorism without organizing every last phone call and paper clip under a permanently chartered federal task force, endowed by its creator with everlasting life and an ever-expanding portfolio.

    Frankly – ironically – I doubt that was really the lesson San Francisco intended to illuminate for us, by pulling out of the JTTF partnership. Left-wing politics has been all about increasing centralized control for more than 100 years now. If this were about high-handedness by the EPA, and not national security, San Francisco would assuredly find a way to be on the side of federal centralization.

    But this seemingly absurd move by San Francisco could turn out to be a remarkably salutary development, if we process it in the right spirit. An overly surveillance-happy nationalized police force is always something to worry about. Civil libertarians have agreed on that for decades now, from both sides of the aisle. Getting too comfortable with proliferating agencies is the first step on a slippery slope, and San Francisco — of all places — may serve to inadvertently back us off of it.

    We live in interesting times.

    President Jacob Zumahas called on parliament to change South Africa’s constitution to allow the expropriation of white owned land without compensation.

    Mr Zuma, 74, who made the remarks in a speech yesterday/FRI morning, said he wanted to establish a “pre-colonial land audit of land use and occupation patterns” before changing the law.

  36. TURKEY – ISIL opened its own school in Ankara: Indictment

    The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been using an office block in the Turkish capital to train young militants under cover of a masjid, according to an indictment by an Ankara prosecutor.

    The group has been using the third, fourth and fifth floors of the block in the Ulucanlar neighborhood of Ankara, the indictment states.

    “They are trying to provide school education in places such as mosques, study or training centers built by themselves. They do not accept the laws or schools of the Republic of Turkey and do not send their children to public schools,” it says.

    Prosecutor Ender Coskun filed claims against suspects including a man identified as Ahmet D., ISIL’s alleged Ankara leader who uses the codename Abu Eslem, and 19 other suspects for “being a member of an armed terror organization.”

    The prosecutor also said the group has been carrying out activities at a number of masjids (mosques ) in Ankara’s Çubuk, Sincan and Alt?ndag districts.

    In searches of the houses of suspects, police found a number of school “report cards” prepared for the children at the school, as well as wedding invitations in Arabic.

    The fifth floor of the office block included in the indictment has been used as a residence by a suspect identified as Mustafa S., while the fourth floor has been used as a “masjid for women” where 22 children aged between 10 and 18 are trained.

    A number of forbidden books, school reports and ISIL flags were found at the block.

    One of the suspects, identified as Ramazan E., told the prosecutor that Turkey is “faithless” as it is “secular and ruled as a democracy.”

    He also said people should not perform their military service in a country that is not “ruled under Islam” and he would not send his children to state schools, where there is “immorality.”

    Another suspect, Necip Ü., said he refused to pray at regular mosques since imams there “have sworn to be loyal to the secular system.”

    FEB 2017 – ISIL spreads ideology in Istanbul school, prosecutors allege

    Prosecutors investigating a group of suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants have alleged that a school has been founded in Istanbul’s Sultanbeyli district to disseminate ISIL’s jihadist ideology to school-age children, daily Vatan has reported Feb. 10.

    The prosecutors suspect that the group founded a school through which they convey ISIL’s ideology to young children, as they found disks containing the notes of classes that are taught to students of the school.

    According to the evidence, the notes state that those who celebrate Turkish national holidays like National Sovereignty and Children’s Day (April 23), Youth and Sports Day (May 19), Republic Day (Oct. 29), and Victory Day (Aug. 30) are “infidels.” They also state that the principles and reforms of Turkey’s founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, as well as the country’s courts, military, and political parties, should all be rejected.

    The file also includes pictures of students holding Kalashnikovs in front of what appears to be a flag of ISIL.

    The probe is investigating 35 suspects, including one arrested man who was spotted in footage carrying out reconnaissance in front of the Turkish Parliament in Ankara and at other public institutions in Istanbul.

    In the indictment, the prosecutor demands aggravated life sentences for six of the suspects, including the man who carried out the reconnaissance, on charges of “attempting to remove the constitutional order.” Up to 15 years in jail was also demanded for all of the suspects for “being a member of a terrorist organization.”

    Turkey in 2016 was hit by a string of attacks blamed on ISIL and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which left hundreds dead.

    Most recently, 39 people were killed in the earlier hours of the new year when a gunman went on a rampage inside the Istanbul nightclub Reina.

    ISIL claimed responsibility for the massacre, making it the first time it had claimed responsibility for an attack on Turkish soil since its first large-scale attack on June 5, 2015.

    “A MAJOR in-depth report in Islamist terrorism in the UK has revealed the shocking truth of where home-grown militants live.

    A brand-new report has examined every single Islamic terror attack and prosecution within the UK since 1998 – and the results are harrowing.

    Sunday Politics gained an interview with Hannah Stuart, who led the report for the Henry Jackson Society.

    She told the BBC that terrorism in the UK had more than trebled in the past five years alone.

    The report warned that Islamism-inspired terrorism remains the principal terror threat to both the United Kingdom and British interests overseas.

    Ms Stuart said: “This isn’t my opinion, this is the facts. There is more offending.

    “Six years ago, people attempted pipe bombs. But more recently, ISIS have encouraged lower-tech knife attacks.

    “This is why we have seen more beheading and stabbings.”

    This can be seen in the alarmingg rise in beheadings and stabbings in the UK, from 4 per cent in 1998 to 44 per cent in 2015.

    The report also found that an overwhelming 43 per cent of Islamist terrorists lived in London, with 18 per cent in the West Midlands and a further 10 per cent in the North-West.

    East London was home to half of London-based offenders, largely based in Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest.

    However, a tenth of Britain’s Islamist terrorists come from just five council wards in Birmingham.

    Researchers found that most of those arrested had already been on the radar of intelligence agencies due to past petty crimes or for publicising their extremist views online.

    While more women are becoming radicalised in the UK, the security think tank claimed men in their 20s are the most likely terrorist culprit.

    Ms Stuart said: “Offenders most often lived in neighbourhoods with both a higher than average relative deprivation and Muslim population.”

    Some 72 per cent of those committing offences are British nationals, 47 per cent are in full time work or education and 76 per cent have been known to the authorities.

    According to the report, 22 per cent of the people convicted had attended terrorist training camps while 44 per cent had direct links to a proscribed terror organisation, such as al-Qaeda and ISIS.”

  40. GREECE -First mosque in Athens heightens tensions over Muslims

    ATHENS — Athens‘ Muslims have long made do with living rooms, community centers and basements when seeking out places to pray. But now, the only European capital without an official mosque is about to get one.

    The construction has set off both delight and dismay.

    “I’m personally fine with praying at my home,” said Abouchan, 26, an Egyptian immigrant and expectant father married to a Greek Orthodox Christian woman, speaking after his Friday prayer at the Arab Hellenic Center for Culture in the working-class Athens suburb of Moshato. “But we also have to have the right to a mosque since we’re living and working in this country.”

    The government-built mosque to be opened in April is being built in a renovated warehouse on land once owned by the Greek navy in Votanikos, a neighborhood two subway stops from the center of Athens. The mosque won’t sport minarets, and government officials will appoint an imam.

    Athens is the home of some 300,000 Muslims out of a population of 4 million people, but the mosque will be able to accommodate about 350 worshippers, according to the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.

    “It doesn’t matter to us if it’s small,” said Abouchan, asking to be identified only by his first name, adding that he valued the mosque as a symbol of recognition and acceptance of Muslims rather than as a place for the entire local community to perform daily prayers.

    Muslims have about 100 praying areas scattered throughout the city — the state began issuing operational licenses to these last year. Most of them are in poor locations — moldy basements or old apartments, worshippers say.

    Despite the presence of more than 300 mosques in northern Greece, where a large Muslim community dates back to Greece’s long history as part of the Ottoman Empire until the first half of the 19th century, building a mosque in Athens, the capital of an overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian nation, has long been taboo.

    Since the mosque’s construction was announced last year, large protests have been organized by far-right party Golden Dawn. Some demonstrators have prayed regularly bearing Greek flags, chanting “Greece means Orthodox” before burning the black Islamic State flag. Protesters occupied the site last fall, delaying construction, and a police raid to clear the site in early November resulted in 15 arrests.

    The construction site is reportedly under tight protection from Greek police and a private security firm.

    Meanwhile, priests and bishops from the Greek Orthodox Church from across the country have been appearing on local talk shows against the building, warning in dire terms of the troubles that multiculturalism will bring.

    “Our country is becoming day by day less Greek and less Christian,” Archbishop of Athens Ieronymos II said in one of his rare interviews on Greek TV. “Muslims can’t be assimilated by Greeks and Orthodoxy — they just can’t. Islam isn’t a religion.”

    Initially supportive of the project, the archbishop subsequently called for construction to be put on hold until it was clear how many of the country’s new flood of Muslim migrants would be living in the capital.

    Popular fears

    Many ordinary Greeks are also worried about the planned mosque.

    Niki Tzianou, a 49-year-old mother of three and public-sector employee, said she is afraid the country will lose its attachment to a faith that has long united the country.

    “There’ll be a corruption of our religious identity from the mixture of religions,” she said.

    Fueling that sentiment has been the influx of thousands of Syrian and other Muslim refugees over the past two years, making the desperate trek to Greece as the first stop on a hoped-for journey to Greece’s richer partners in the European Union. Far-right populist parties such as Golden Dawn have scored election victories on promises to reduce the number of Muslims in the country.

    “If [the government] wants to change the country’s religious map and fill Greece with mosques, we’re not going to follow,” Christos Papas, a Golden Dawn lawmaker, said on local TV this month. “Ninety-eight percent of Greeks are Christian Orthodox.”

    Anna Stamou, a Greek convert to Islam and spokeswoman of the Muslim Association of Greece, stressed that it was important that the mosque be officially sanctioned and that it was not funded by Saudi Arabia, whose leaders have spent lavishly on mosques throughout the Balkans in recent years.

    “We wanted it to be [built] with Greek funds so no other country can interfere in our community’s internal affairs,” Ms. Stamou said, referring to Saudi conditions that require clerics in Saudi-funded mosques to praise the desert kingdom’s monarch. “We want something to be ours, like the churches are Greek. The mosque has to be Greek in order to be independent and so we have a free voice.”

    That could allay fears that radical preachers promoting terrorism are being imported into the country, many say. Still, sensational headlines from right-wing newspapers continuously attack the mosque project, arguing in part that an Islamic mosque in not a project — financially, politically or culturally — that debt-stricken Greece should be funding right now. The mosque’s estimated cost is around $1 million, with the European Union largely footing the bill.

    The government is moving ahead, saying it is past time for the project to be completed.

    “In our country, dozens of religions are practiced, and they all have their legal praying areas except Muslims in Athens, who until recently were not given any area,” said George Kalantzis, who oversees religious affairs in the education ministry. “There are Greek Muslim citizens, legal migrants and those that have no legal papers, but one’s relationship to God has nothing to do with whether someone has legal papers or not.”

    Still, many Muslims here wonder if they will see a mosque open its doors.

    Moukantes Chusha, 57, an Albanian Muslim housewife who has lived more than half of her life in Greece, said she was tired of observing her faith in open-air venues.

    “I don’t know if they’ll build a mosque at the end,” she said. “It’s been so many years that they’ve promised to us that they’ll do it, but nothing has happened.”

    February 2, 2017: A “no-go zone” in the eastern suburbs of Paris. Police on patrol hear screams. They decide to check. While there, a young man insults them. They decide to arrest him. He hits them. A fight starts. He accuses a policeman of having raped him with a police baton. A police investigation quickly establishes that the young man was not raped. But it is too late; a toxic process has begun.

    Without waiting for any further evidence, the French Interior Minister says that the police officers have “behaved badly.” He adds that “police misconduct must be condemned”. French President François Hollande goes to the hospital to give his support to the young man. The president says he has conducted himself in a “dignified and responsible manner.” The next day, a demonstration against the police is cobbled together. The demonstration turns into a riot.

    Riots continue for more than two weeks. They affect more than twenty cities throughout France. They spread to the heart of Paris. Dozens of cars are torched. Shops and restaurants are looted. Official buildings and police stations are attacked.

    The police are ordered not to intervene. They do what they are told to do. Few arrests take place.

    Calm is slowly returning, but the riots can easily start again. France is a country at the mercy of large-scale uprisings. They can explode anytime, anyplace. French leaders know it, and find refuge in cowardice.

    What is happening is the result of a corrosive development initiated five decades ago. In the 1960s, after the war in Algeria, President Charles de Gaulle directed the country toward closer relations with Arab and Muslim states.

    Migratory flows of “guest workers” from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which had started a few years earlier, sharply increased. Immigrants were not encouraged to integrate. Everyone assumed they would return home at the end of their employment contracts. They were settled in the outskirts of big cities. The economy was dynamic, with strong job creation. It seemed there would be no problems.

    Twenty years later, serious difficulties became obvious. The immigrants now numbered millions. People from sub-Saharan Africa joined those coming from Arab nations. Neighborhoods made up of just Arabs and Africans were formed. The economy had slowed down and mass unemployment settled in. But the jobless immigrants did not go back home, instead relying on social benefits. Integration still did not exist. Although many of these new arrivals had become French citizens, they often sounded resentful of France and the West. Political agitators started teaching them to detest Western civilization. Violent gangs of young Arabs and Africans began to form. Clashes with police were common. Often, when a gang member was wounded, political agitators would help to incite more violence.

    The situation grew difficult to control. But nothing was done to fix it; quite the opposite.

    In 1984, a movement called SOS Racisme was created by Trotskyist militants, and began to define any criticism of immigration as “racist”. Major leftist parties supported SOS Racism. They seem to have thought that by accusing their political opponents of racism, they could attract the votes of “new citizens.” The presence of Islamist agitators, alongside agitators in Arab and African neighborhoods, plus the emergence of anti-Western Islamic discourse, alarmed many observers. SOS Racisme immediately designated those who spoke of Islamic danger as “Islamophobic racists.”

    Europe.

    • In 1990, a law drafted by a Communist lawmaker, Jean-Claude Gayssot, was passed. It stipulated that “any discrimination based on ethnicity, nation, race or religion is prohibited.” Since then, this law has been used to criminalize any criticism of Arab and African delinquency, any question on immigration from the Muslim world, any negative analysis of Islam. Many writers have been fined, and most “politically incorrect” books on those topics have disappeared from bookshops.

      The French government asked the media to obey the “Gayssot law.” It also asked that history textbooks be rewritten to include chapters on the crimes committed by the West against Muslims, and on the “essential contribution” of Islam to humanity.

      In 2002, the situation in the country became dramatic.

      Arab and African neighborhoods had become “no-go zones.” Radical Islam was widespread and Islamist attacks began. Dozens of cars would be torched each week. Muslim anti-Semitism was rising rapidly and led to an increase in anti-Jewish attacks. SOS Racisme and other anti-racist organizations were silent on Muslim anti-Semitism. Unwilling to be accused of “Islamophobic racism,” organizations tasked with fighting against anti-Semitism were also silent.

      A book, The Lost Territories of the Republic, by Georges Bensoussan (under the pen-name “Emmanuel Brenner”), was released. It depicted accurately what was going on. It spoke of the sweeping hatred for the West among young people of immigrant origin, and of the full-blown hatred of Jews among young Muslims. It said that “no-go zones” were on the edge of secession and no longer a part of French territory. The mainstream media ignored the book.

      Three years later, in October 2005, riots broke out across the country. More than 9,000 cars were torched. Hundreds of stores, supermarkets and shopping centers were looted and destroyed. Dozens of police officers were seriously injured. The storm stopped when the government reached an agreement to make peace with Muslim associations. Power had changed hands.

      Since then, the state scarcely maintains law and order in France.

      Another book, A Submissive France, was recently published by the man who had written The Lost Territories of the Republic fifteen years before, the historian Georges Bensoussan. Now, the French Republic itself is a lost territory.

      “No go zones” are no longer French territory. Radical Islam and the hatred of the West reign among Muslim populations and, more broadly, among populations of immigrant origin. Muslim anti-Semitism makes life unbearable for Jews who have not yet left France and who cannot afford to relocate to areas where Jews are not yet threatened: the 16th and 17th arrondissements, the Beverly Hills of Paris; or the city of Neuilly, a wealthy suburb of Paris.

      Everywhere in France, high school teachers go to work with a Qur’an in their hands, to make sure that what they say in class does not contradict the sacred book of Islam.

      All history textbooks are “Islamically correct”. One-third of the French Muslims say they want to live according to Islamic sharia law and not according to the laws of France.

      In hospitals, Muslims are increasingly asking to be treated by Muslim doctors only, and refusing to let their wives be treated by male doctors.

      Attacks on police officers occur on a daily basis. The police have orders: they must not enter “no-go zones.” They must not respond to insults and threats. They must flee if they are assaulted. Sometime, they do not have time to flee.

      In October 2016, two policemen were burned alive in their car in Viry-Châtillon, south of Paris. In January 2017, three police officers fell into an ambush and were stabbed in in Bobigny, east of Paris.

      Police officers did respond to the incident on February 2. When a man became violent, they did not flee. The French government could only find them guilty, accusing a police officer of raping his attacker. But the police officer was not guilty of rape; he was guilty of simply having intervened. The French government also found his colleagues guilty. They were all accused of “violence.” They now will have to go to court.

      The young man who destroyed the lives of these police officers is not being accused of anything. In all the “no go zones,” he is now a hero. Mainstream television channels ask him for interviews. His name is Theodore, or Theo. “Justice for Theo” stickers are everywhere. Banners sporting his name are waved at demonstrations. Rioters shout his name along with the name of Allah.

      A few journalists have said that he is not a hero; that “no go zones” are reservoirs of anti-Western, anti-Semitic and anti-French hatred ready to burst. But these journalists are also cautious. They know they might be prosecuted.

      Georges Bensoussan, the Moroccan-born author of The Lost Territories of the Republic and of A Submissive France — is currently on trial. A complaint was filed against him by the Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF). They are suing him for having said: “Today we are witnessing a different people in the French nation; they are causing the return of a number of democratic values to which we adhere,” and “This visceral anti-Semitism, proven by the Fondapol Survey last year, cannot remain in silence.”

      Judges were immediately assigned to the case. The verdict is due March 5. If Bensoussan is not sentenced, the CCIF will be sure to appeal. Bensoussan is a man from the left. He is a member of “J Call” (European Jewish Call for Reason), a movement criticizing “Israel’s occupation of the West Bank”, and asking for “the creation of a viable Palestinian state”. Even such positions are no longer enough to protect him. The International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA), an organization founded in 1927 to combat anti-Semitism, supported CCIF. Organizations ostensibly fighting anti-Semitism in France instead seem to be clinging to futile fantasies of appeasing their tormentors. They never mention Muslim anti-Semitism, and have now fully joined the fight against “Islamophobic racism” against Jewish authors such as Georges Bensoussan.

      Elections will be held in France, in April. The Socialist Party chose a candidate, Benoît Hamon, supported by the UOIF (Union of Islamic Organizations of France), the French branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

      The far-left and the communists will also have a candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, an unconditional admirer of Lenin, Hugo Chavez and Yasser Arafat, and a resolute enemy of Israel.

      Hamon and Mélenchon will likely each receive about 15% of the vote.

      A third candidate from the left, Emmanuel Macron, is a former member of the French Socialist government under François Hollande. To attract the Muslim vote, Macron went to Algeria and said that French colonization was a “crime against humanity.” He stated several times that French culture does not exist, and that Western culture does not exist either; but he added that Arab Muslim culture must have “its place” in France.

      The conservative candidate, François Fillon, promises to fight Sunni Islam, but says he wants a “strong alliance” between France, Iran’s mullahs and Hezbollah. His reputation is badly damaged by a “fake jobs” scandal. He has attacked France’s Jewish community, presumably to secure the Muslim vote. He said it does not respect “all the rules of the Republic.” He has said that Israel represents a threat to world peace.

      Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate of the National Front, may seem the most determined to straighten France out, but her economic program is as self-defeatingly Marxist as that of Hamon or Mélenchon. Le Pen also wants to attract the Muslim electorate. She went to Cairo a few months ago to meet the Grand Imam of al-Azhar. Like all other French political parties, her party supported the anti-Israeli positions of former U.S. President Barack Obama, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 2334, passed last year on December 23.

      Le Pen will likely win the first round of the two-round election, but will almost certainly be defeated in the second round: all the other candidates will gather behind the candidate facing her, probably Macron or Fillon (if he still is in the race). Le Pen might think that in five years the situation in France will be even worse, and that then she will have a serious chance to be elected President.

      A few months ago, in a recently published book, Civil War is Coming, the French columnist Ivan Rioufol wrote: “The danger is not the National Front, which is only the expression of the anger of an abandoned people. The danger is the ever-closer links between leftism and Islamism…. The danger must be stopped.”

Nunes said Monday that he was not privy to anything of that nature, though he did leave open the possibility that such evidence existed.

    “As of right now, I don’t have any evidence of any phone calls,” he said. “It doesn’t mean they don’t exist. What I’ve been told by many folks is that there’s nothing there.”

    Nunes said that he would be reluctant to bring the investigative powers of Congress to bear on private citizens like Carter Page, Paul Manafort, and Roger Stone without seeing something more significant.

    “At this time, I want to be very careful that we can’t just go on a witch hunt against Americans because they appear in news stories,” he said.

    Nunes insisted that while it was important for Congress to investigate Russia’s cyberattacks on the DNC, it was just as important to identify and prosecute those individuals within the government who were leaking classified information to the media.

    “There’s been major crimes committed,” Nunes said. “What I’m concerned about is no one focusing on major leaks that have occurred here. We can’t run a government like this. A government can’t function with massive leaks at the highest level.”

    While the Sunday talk shows have been largely focused on debunking Trump’s allegations that Obama hacked the Trump Tower, a somewhat different perspective into Trump’s current state of mind comes from Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy, a close friend of the President, who in an article this morning shares that having spoken to Trump about the wiretapping story, he hasn’t “seen Trump so pissed off in a long time.” Below are some of the highlights from Ruddy’s article posted earlier today:

    When I woke up Sunday, I thought the morning news shows would all be talking about the unusual, perhaps dangerous, decision of the Obama administration to wiretap the offices of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. I’ve been watching Chuck Todd’s “Meet the Press” as I write this. There is actually little talk about this unprecedented wire-tapping and even less worry over it. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, usually thoughtful, just told Chuck Todd he found it is “shocking” that Trump disclosed the wiretapping claim on Twitter.

    But Friedman offered no shock that such a wiretap might have taken place!

    I spoke with the President twice yesterday about the wiretap story. I haven’t seen him this pissed off in a long time. When I mentioned Obama “denials” about the wiretaps, he shot back: “This will be investigated, it will all come out. I will be proven right.”

    Ruddy then focuses on the semantic denial by Obama that he had not ordered such a wiretap:

    Today on the “Meet the Press” James Clapper, Obama’s Director of National Intelligence, denied any agency that operated under him, including the FBI, ever wiretapped the Trump offices. “To my knowledge,” he added. [Wasn’t Clapper the same man who testified under oath that the NSA never collected phone data on millions of Americans — a fact proven untrue by the Snowden revelations?]

    But the most important Clapper revelation from “Meet the Press” was this: He emphatically told Todd the Obama intelligence agencies found “no evidence” of collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Russians. Nothing. Nada. If that is true, and Trump is right he was indeed wiretapped, it will only fuel his argument that Obama administration officials improperly eavesdropped on his offices.

    In lieu of a follow-up from Trump as this story progresses, here is what Ruddy thinks are the relevant things to consider in the near future:

    No one is denying that the Russians outrageously interfered in the U.S. election. Trump says it’s true too. But remember this “act of war” happened under Obama not Trump. Obama did nothing against Putin and the Russians despite having full knowledge of Russian’s active measures at the time they were happening. This wasn’t Trump’s fault. Another sign of the Obama administration’s weakness.

    The Russian interference, which again I take very seriously, did not change the election result. In fact, an argument could be made it hurt Trump and helped Hillary. Hillary outperformed Obama’s 2012 results in many, many states. For example, she cut Obama’s loss in Texas by half! Hillary’s problem was her campaign did little in the five states that mattered. As Woody Allen once described the secret of success, Trump just “showed up” in those states — and won.

    Despite Clapper and others saying there is no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, the media is continually trying to create such a narrative. For example, stories are proliferating of the Russian ambassador’s contacts with the Trump campaign. But the truth is that campaigns deal all the time with foreign diplomats. There is nothing unusual or illegal here. And considering Trump’s very open declaration he wanted to reset U.S.-Russian relations, these contacts should not be surprising.

    Lastly, Chuck Schumer and other Democrats calling for a special prosecutor are way, way over the top. The Constitution provides for a “special prosecutor” — it’s called Congress. The Senate Intelligence Committee and other Congressional committees will review these matters soon. If they find serious evidence of wrong doing by the Trump campaign, then they can seek a special prosecutor.

    As for the markets, the rising concern is that as Trump continues to get weighed down by such domestic policy “smokescreens” as Ruddy calls it, the reality is that the president’s economic plans, be it the repeal of Obamacare or his tax policy, are becoming increasingly unlikely to be implemented in the near, and not so near future, and sooner or later the market will have no choice but to notice.

      WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, asked the Justice Department this weekend to publicly reject President Trump’s assertion that President Barack Obama ordered the tapping of Mr. Trump’s phones, senior American officials said on Sunday. Mr. Comey has argued that the highly charged claim is false and must be corrected, they said, but the department has not released any such statement.

      Mr. Comey, who made the request on Saturday after Mr. Trump leveled his allegation on Twitter, has been working to get the Justice Department to knock down the claim because it falsely insinuates that the F.B.I. broke the law, the officials said.

      A spokesman for the F.B.I. declined to comment. Sarah Isgur Flores, the spokeswoman for the Justice Department, also declined to comment.

      Mr. Comey’s request is a remarkable rebuke of a sitting president, putting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the position of questioning Mr. Trump’s truthfulness. The confrontation between the two is the most serious consequence of Mr. Trump’s weekend Twitter outburst, and it underscores the dangers of what the president and his aides have unleashed by accusing the former president of a conspiracy to undermine Mr. Trump’s young administration.

      The White House showed no indication that it would back down from Mr. Trump’s claims. On Sunday, the president demanded a congressional inquiry into whether Mr. Obama had abused the power of federal law enforcement agencies before the 2016 presidential election. In a statement from his spokesman, Mr. Trump called “reports” about the wiretapping “very troubling” and said that Congress should examine them as part of its investigations into Russia’s meddling in the election.

      Along with concerns about potential attacks on the bureau’s credibility, senior F.B.I. officials are said to be worried that the notion of a court-approved wiretap will raise the public’s expectations that the federal authorities have significant evidence implicating the Trump campaign in colluding with Russia’s efforts to disrupt the presidential election.

      One problem Mr. Comey has faced is that there are few senior politically appointed officials at the Justice Department who can make the decision to release a statement, the officials said. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself on Thursday from all matters related to the federal investigation into connections between Mr. Trump, his associates and Russia.

      Mr. Comey’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering is certain to invite contrasts to his actions last year, when he spoke publicly about the Hillary Clinton email case and disregarded Justice Department entreaties not to.

      It is not clear why Mr. Comey did not issue the statement himself. He is the most senior law enforcement official who was kept on the job as the Obama administration gave way to the Trump administration. And while the Justice Department applies for intelligence-gathering warrants, the F.B.I. keeps its own set of records and is in position to know whether Mr. Trump’s claims are true. While intelligence officials do not normally discuss the existence or nonexistence of surveillance warrants, no law prevents Mr. Comey from issuing the statement.

      In his demand for a congressional inquiry, the president, through his press secretary, Sean Spicer, issued a statement on Sunday that said, “President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.”

      Mr. Spicer, who repeated the entire statement in a series of Twitter messages, added that “neither the White House nor the president will comment further until such oversight is conducted.”

      A spokesman for Mr. Obama and his former aides have called the accusation by Mr. Trump completely false, saying that Mr. Obama never ordered any wiretapping of a United States citizen.

      “A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice,” Kevin Lewis, Mr. Obama’s spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday.

      Mr. Trump’s demand for a congressional investigation appears to be based, at least in part, on unproved claims by Breitbart News and conservative talk radio hosts that secret warrants were issued authorizing the tapping of the phones of Mr. Trump and his aides at Trump Tower in New York.

      In a series of Twitter messages on Saturday, the president seemed to be convinced that those claims were true. In one post, Mr. Trump said, “I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!”

      On Sunday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy White House press secretary, said the president was determined to find out what had really happened, calling it potentially the “greatest abuse of power” that the country has ever seen.

      “Look, I think he’s going off of information that he’s seen that has led him to believe that this is a very real potential,” Ms. Sanders said on ABC’s “This Week” program. “And if it is, this is the greatest overreach and the greatest abuse of power that I think we have ever seen and a huge attack on democracy itself. And the American people have a right to know if this took place.”

      The claims about wiretapping appear similar in some ways to the unfounded voter fraud charges that Mr. Trump made during his first days in the Oval Office. Just after Inauguration Day, he reiterated in a series of Twitter posts his belief that millions of voters had cast ballots illegally — claims that also appeared to be based on conspiracy theories from right-wing websites.

      As with his demand for a wiretapping inquiry, Mr. Trump also called for a “major investigation” into voter fraud, saying on Twitter that “depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!” No investigation has been started.

      Senior law enforcement and intelligence officials who worked in the Obama administration have said there were no secret intelligence warrants regarding Mr. Trump. Asked whether such a warrant existed, James R. Clapper Jr., a former director of national intelligence, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, “Not to my knowledge, no.”

      “There was no such wiretap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time as a candidate or against his campaign,” Mr. Clapper added.

      Mr. Trump’s demands for a congressional investigation were initially met with skepticism by lawmakers, including Republicans. Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, said he was “not sure what it is that he is talking about.”

      “I’m not sure what the genesis of that statement was,” Mr. Rubio said.

      FBI Director James B. Comey asked the Justice Department this weekend to issue a statement refuting President Trump’s claim that President Obama ordered a wiretap of Trump’s phones before the election, according a U.S. official, but the department has not done so.

      Comey made the highly unusual request on Saturday after Trump accused Obama on Twitter of having his “‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower.”

      The revelation, first reported by The New York Times, underscores the fraught nature of the FBI’s high-profile investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. A key question fueling the probe is whether Trump associates colluded with Russian officials to help Trump win.

      The department declined to comment late Sunday afternoon, as did the FBI.

      The development came as Trump’s charge against Obama — leveled without any evidence — was being rebuffed both inside and outside of the executive branch. And it drew a blunt, on-the-record denial by a top intelligence official who served in the Obama administration.

      Speaking on NBC News on Sunday morning, former director of national intelligence James R. Clapper Jr denied that a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) wiretap was authorized against Trump or the campaign during his tenure.

      “There was no such wiretap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time as a candidate or against his campaign,” Clapper said on “Meet the Press,” adding that he would “absolutely” have been informed if the FBI had received a FISA warrant against either.

      “I can deny it,” Clapper said emphatically.

      In his claims early Saturday morning, the president tweeted that he “just found out” that Obama had “wires tapped” in Trump Tower before the election, comparing it to “McCarthyism.”

      “Is it legal for a sitting President to be ‘wire tapping’ a race for president prior to an election?” Trump asked in another tweet. “Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!”

      By Sunday morning, the White House doubled down on Trump’s explosive series of tweets and called for a congressional probe into “politically motivated investigations.”

      Such a surveillance would not have been approved by any senior Justice Department official in the Obama administration, current and former officials said. And Trump’s allegation raised hackles in the FBI leadership, insinuating as it did that the bureau may have acted illegally to wiretap a presidential candidate without probable cause that he was an “agent of a foreign power,” as the foreign intelligence surveillance law requires.

      “This is Nixon/Watergate,” Trump tweeted Saturday.

      White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Sunday cited “reports” of “potentially politically motivated investigations” during the 2016 campaign, calling them “troubling.” None of the media reports cited by the White House provide evidence of a politically motivated surveillance campaign against Trump.

      “President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016,” Spicer said. “Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted,” the statement added.

      Congressional committees in the House and the Senate are probing suspected Russian efforts to undermine the 2016 election as well as any contacts between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.

      Trump’s Saturday morning tweetstorm may have been prompted by the comments of a conservative radio host, which were summarized in an article on the conservative website Breitbart. The Breitbart story was circulating among Trump’s senior aides on Friday and Saturday.

      A spokesman for Obama on Saturday said the former president never authorized a wiretap of Trump or any other American citizen.

      The White House’s escalation of Trump’s claims were kept at arm’s length by congressional Republicans appearing on Sunday morning news broadcasts.

      When asked about Trump’s allegations, Senate Intelligence Committee member Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) declined to comment on the president’s tweets but said he has “seen no evidence of the allegations.”

      “Whether that’s a FISA court application or denial of that application or a re-submission of that application, that doesn’t mean that none of these things happened. It just means we haven’t seen that yet,” Cotton added, speaking on Fox News Sunday.

      Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said he is not aware of evidence to back up the president’s claim.

      “I have no insight into exactly what he’s referring to,” Rubio said on “Meet the Press.” “The president put that out there, and now the White House will have to answer for exactly what he was referring to.”

      Obama’s allies were more blunt, denying flatly that the former president had ordered a wiretap of Trump’s campaign.

      “This may come as a surprise to the current occupant of the Oval Office, but the president of the United States does not have the authority to unilaterally order the wiretapping of American citizens,” said former Obama White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

      Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told “Meet the Press” that Trump is “in trouble” and acting “beneath the dignity of the presidency.”

      “The president’s in trouble if he falsely spread this kind of information,” Schumer said. “It shows this president doesn’t know how to conduct himself.”

      Earnest added that Trump was attempting to distract from the controversy involving contacts between his campaign aides, including now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Russian officials.

      “We know exactly why president Trump tweeted what he tweeted,” Earnest added. “Because there is one page in the Trump White House crisis management playbook, and that is simply to tweet or say something outrageous to distract from a scandal. And the bigger the scandal, the more outrageous the tweet.”

      Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders repeatedly said that the president’s allegation was worth looking into.

      “He’s asking that we get down to the bottom of this, let’s get the truth here, let’s find out,” Huckabee Sanders said. “I think the bigger story isn’t who reported it, but is it true. And I think the American people have a right to know if this happened, because if it did, again, this is the largest abuse of power that, I think, we have ever seen.”

      Asked whether Trump truly believes Obama wiretapped him, Huckabee Sanders deflected.

      “I would say that his tweet speaks for itself there,” she said.

      Clapper’s comments referred only to whether Trump campaign officials had been wiretapped. But their conversations could also have been captured by routine surveillance of Russian diplomats or intelligence operatives.

      U.S. monitoring of Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, for example, caught his conversations with Trump adviser Michael Flynn during the campaign. Flynn went on to become Trump’s national security adviser, but he was forced to resign last month after admitting that he had misled other senior Trump officials about the nature of those conversations.

      The FBI and the National Security Agency also have obtained intercepted communications among Russians officials in which they refer to conversations with members of the Trump team, current and former U.S. officials have said.

      On the broader question of apparent Russian interference in the 2016 election, Clapper urged congressional investigators to attempt to settle the issue, which he said has become a “distraction” in the political sphere.

      The intelligence community found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government — at least until the end of the Obama administration, the nation’s former top spy said Sunday.

      “We had no evidence of such collusion,” Clapper said on “Meet the Press.”

      He added a caveat: “This could have unfolded or become available in the time since I left government.”

      Whether there was any collusion is a key question fueling a wide-ranging federal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

      On Jan. 6, the U.S. spy agencies collectively released a report concluding that Russia carried out cyberhacks and other “active measures” with an intent to help Trump and harm the campaign and potential presidency of Hillary Clinton. The report, Clapper pointed out, included “no evidence” of collusion with the Trump campaign.

      But the investigation by the FBI, the NSA and the CIA continues. The Senate and House intelligence committees also are conducting investigations.

    Thousands of supporters of French presidential candidate Francois Fillon gathered in Paris on Sunday, to rally in support of the presidential candidate for the Republican party.

    Fillon is being formally investigated following allegations that he paid his wife with public funds to carry out tasks in a ‘fake job’ as his parliamentary aid. He will appear before Judge Serge Tournaire on March 15, but so far has refused to step down.

    According to the organisers, 200,000 people showed their support for the Republican party candidate, chanting “Fillon, President’ while waving French flags.

    Initially Fillon had been a favourite among his opponents, but his approval ratings dropped after the allegations in January. He is facing criticism from several leaders of his own party, who will meet tomorrow to decide on the candidate’s future.
