  1. Canada: Singing ‘Raging Grannies’ rally for press freedom in Toronto

Dozens of protesters demonstrated for press freedom in Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto, Saturday.

The social justice activists Raging Grannies tunefully led the call for an end to government surveillance singing, “For every spy and spook in the land has all their data under their command and whatever they do their labelling you a terrorist.” The protest was organised by Canadian Journalists For Free Expression who demand an end to surveillance of groups including indigenous communities, Muslims, environmentalists and journalists.

Tom Henheffer, a member of Canadian Journalists For Free Expression, stressed, “Without the public trust in the media we lose our ability to be an informed citizenry and this kind of hateful rhetoric that we see bubbling up in the states is coming to Canada and there is only one defence against that, and that is free expression and free press.”

  2. Iraq: Police Commandos recapture new neighborhood in Mosul (abcnews, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/iraq-police-commandos-recapture-neighborhood-mosul-45744696

“Iraqi militarized police captured a neighborhood on the western side of Mosul on Sunday amid fierce clashes with Islamic State militants, as thousands of people continued to flee the battle to government-controlled areas, security officials said.

Iraqi forces, backed by aerial support by the U.S.-led international coalition, launched a new push last week to drive IS militants from Mosul’s west, capturing so far the city’s international airport and an adjacent military base. Iraqi authorities declared Mosul’s eastern half “fully liberated” from the Sunni militants in January, three months after launching the operation to take back Iraq’s second-largest city.

At dawn Sunday, the Federal Police Commandos Division moved into the Tayaran neighborhood amid fierce clashes, Maj. Gen. Haider al-Maturi told The Associated Press from Baghdad. Al-Maturi said the neighborhood “is now under their full control.”…”

  3. Philippine offensive continues amid threat to behead German (abcnews, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/philippine-offensive-continues-amid-threat-behead-german-45745036

“The Philippine military says troops are pressing efforts to eradicate Abu Sayyaf militants, who have threatened to behead a German hostage by a ransom deadline that has lapsed.

Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said Sunday that troops were continuing operations to rescue foreign and local hostages, including German hostage Jurgen Gustav Kantner, believed to be held by the militants in the jungles of southern Sulu province.

Kantner said in a video that circulated online earlier this month that the militants have threatened to behead him by mid-afternoon of Sunday if a ransom were not paid.

There was no immediate sign whether the militants pushed through with their threat to kill him.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s adviser, Jesus Dureza, made a last-minute appeal to the militants to spare Kantner.”

  4. Hezbollah’s Financial Crisis Restrains its Social, Media Allocations (aawsat, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://english.aawsat.com/2017/02/article55368182/hezbollahs-financial-crisis-restrains-social-media-allocations

“News of halt of financial allocations for some of Hezbollah’s allies and journalists, and closing of Iran-financed television al-Alam, come to assure the news of the party’s financial crisis which clearly reflected on its society.

Al-Alam had called upon its employees to attend sessions of liquefying its assets due to the current situation, and following the request it had presented to the Ministry of Labor.

“Lebanon 24” News site reported sources saying that Hezbollah’s circle of allies began lessening expenses of all committees, conventions, and study-centers.

Sources indicated that projects executed by president of al-Tawhid movement Wiam Wahhab and financed by Iran had stopped because the funding ceased during this time.

Political researcher Ali al-Amin said that anyone who enters the southern suburb of Beirut, which is considered Hezbollah’s stronghold, can sense the social and economic cries suffered by the party’s society.

Amin said that in addition to that, number of “mafias”, gangs, and theft increased which reflects the deterioration of Hezbollah’s public and private situations. He added, the party became incapable of financing a lot of social causes.

“The party is now unable to support and finance the close circuits within its organizations,” Amin told Asharq Al-Awsat.

He pointed out that Iran’s financial support receded, adding that the U.S. sanctions posed on the party was clearly reflected on its surrounding environment.

However, Amin said, that Hezbollah is Iran’s strong arm in Lebanon and thus a priority. War in Syria takes a lot of this funding despite that fighters’ allocations were decreased to a 50% in some cases.

Amin doesn’t rule out that this will affect Hezbollah during the parliamentary elections…”

  5. In ‘special message’, Taliban leader urges Afghans to plant more trees (reuters, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-afghanistan-taliban-idUKKBN165070?rpc=401&

“The Taliban group in Afghanistan on Sunday used a rare public statement in the name of its leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, to call on Afghans to plant more trees for worldly and other-worldly good.

Official Taliban outlets released the “special message” under Akhundzada’s name, an uncommon move for the group that has recently published unsigned statements on a range of issues such as civilian casualties, upcoming military operations, and the anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops in the 1980s.

Akhundzada, a cleric, is believed to have been in hiding since becoming Taliban leader in May 2016 following the death of his predecessor in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan.

In the statement, he urged Afghan civilians and Taliban fighters to “plant one or several fruit or non-fruit trees for the beautification of Earth and the benefit of almighty Allah’s creations.”…”

  6. DWI suspected in crash that hurt 28 at New Orleans parade

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man who allegedly plowed into a crowd enjoying the Krewe of Endymion parade on Saturday in the Mid-City section of New Orleans is being investigated for driving while intoxicated, police said.

The accident came during one of the busiest nights of Mardi Gras when thousands of people throng the streets of Mid-City to watch the elaborate floats and clamor to catch beads and trinkets tossed from riders.

“We suspect that that subject was highly intoxicated,” Police Chief Michael Harrison said on Saturday evening.

Harrison was asked twice by the media if terrorism was suspected. While he didn’t say “No” he did say it looks like a case of DWI.

  7. Out: Sanctuary cities. In: Sanctuary states (two in the last week)
    By J.E. Dyer February 25, 2017

The mainstream media aren’t getting the conversation started on this, so it appears it’s up to the blogosphere. In terms of there being “sanctuary states,” the train has already left the station. This is a very dangerous trend, and we cannot take it lightly.

In California, where’s there’s a (somewhat overhyped) “Calexit” movement, we did get some major press coverage a few weeks ago of legislation in Sacramento to turn California into an official sanctuary state. The specifics of the legislation are basically the same measures that define a “sanctuary city”: prohibiting state (or local) law enforcement from cooperating with federal authorities in administering immigration law. (Note, Colorado also has a sanctuary-state bill percolating through its legislature, as does New Mexico.)

What this often boils down to is local law enforcement being ordered not to honor federal “detainer” requests for illegals being held in local jails. It can also mean not notifying the feds when a records check is run during a routine stop, and an illegal being detained is found to be the subject of a federal warrant.

In California’s case, it may mean not giving ICE access to local jails “for purposes of immigration enforcement.”

    http://libertyunyielding.com/2017/02/25/sanctuary-cities-sanctuary-states-two-last-week/

    • Eventually, the legal citizens will not stand for it anymore. And there is no reason why they should. In fact, if they can’t get justice by peaceful means, they will increasingly be near or even at the threshold where they have to take other measures.

This is a prescription for civil war. It is not “OK” to continue demanding that law-abiding citizens simply live with this. If enforcing the existing laws of the United States isn’t the answer – and that’s all Donald Trump is doing (in fact, in a way the great majority of Americans approve of: removing the illegals with violent criminal convictions) – then there needs to be another answer, and quickly.

Even more important, the great majority of illegals aren’t the ones demanding that our laws not be enforced. It’s organized, well-heeled, enfranchised people in the U.S., and people with plenty of “voice” and resources outside the U.S., who do that. Those are the people who are being politically opposed, and who have to be.

Opposing them means enforcing the law, regardless of how it infuriates them. It may have to mean a showdown between state and federal authorities at some point. God willing, a peaceful one. If the proponents of lawlessness – like Inslee and Malloy – are opposed effectively, I don’t think they really will force a civil war. But if they do, they will lose.

These paragraphs from the ending of the article are the ones that require the most thought, they are looking into the future if/when the people finally get tired of the self proclaimed elite of the alt radical left oppressing them. Make no mistake this action is designed to damage and eventually destroy the US as it was envisioned by the Founding Fathers and establish a new US that is run by self anointed people who aren’t elected and who look down on the ordinary people. The self anointed elite are pushing for a race/civil war because they think this will make it easier for them to destroy the US. They are wrong in this thought, they will lose and lose big time and their actions will result in a changed US that restores individual rights, does away with group rights and reverses all Judge written laws (illegally written).

  8. UK: Five hospitalised after suspected drunk-driver crashes in London

Five people were hit by a car on Bromley Road in south-east London, Sunday morning, one man remains in critical condition.

A man driving a Mercedes collided with a wall and the group of people at 08:20 GMT. Paramedics, police and an air ambulance arrived at the scene to assist the injured.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving before being taken to hospital himself.

    • Germany, New Orleans, Britain. Look at the timing and decide if this is coincidence or enemy action?

      • You forgot Israel.
That’s the testing ground for all these manifestations of florid Tard-ism.

        There is no diplomatic solution.
The “Two-State Solution” has always been nonsense. It’s called the “Salami-Slicing Method” of destroying a state. Watch the attempted dismemberment of the nation-states we know as France, Germany, and all the rest.

Coexistence with a Muslim population has to be managed in terms Muslims understand. That means “at your feet or at your throat”.

Westerners aren’t comfortable with that formulation. So don’t bring them in! Where it’s too late to throw out unassimilated Trouble, I’ve got two words of advice: Grow up.

        • It is never too late to throw them out, it may be politically unfeasible but it is never too late. During the last Islamic Conquest it took the Spanish 600 years to kick all of them out but the managed, we can do it to if we decide it is worth the political cost.

        • The military term is defeat in detail, split the enemy force into small groups and go from one to the next in overwhelming force.

  9. Letter-writing former Iran president pens dispatch to Trump (abcnews, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/letter-writing-iran-president-pens-dispatch-trump-45745035

“Iran’s former hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent a letter Sunday to President Donald Trump, striking a somewhat conciliatory tone while applauding immigration to America and saying it shows “the contemporary U.S. belongs to all nations.”

It isn’t the first dispatch sent by Ahmadinejad, who has counted U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama among his pen pals.

But this letter, weighing in at over 3,500 words, comes as criticism of Trump over his travel ban affecting seven Muslim-majority countries including Iran mounts in Tehran. It also may serve to burnish Ahmadinejad’s image domestically after the nation’s Supreme Leader warned him not to run in Iran’s upcoming May presidential election.

In the letter, published by Iranian media outlets, Ahmadinejad noted Trump won the election while he “truthfully described the U.S. political system and electoral structure as corrupt.”

Ahmadinejad decried U.S. “dominance” over the United Nations, as well as American meddling in the world that has brought “insecurity, war, division, killing and (the) displacement of nations.”

He also acknowledged the some 1 million people of Iranian descent living in America, saying that U.S. policies should “value respect toward the diversity of nations and races.”

“In other words, the contemporary U.S. belongs to all nations, including the natives of the land,” he wrote. “No one may consider themselves the owner and view others as guests or immigrants.”…”

  10. Nigerian governor says 2 kidnapped Germans are freed (abcnews, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/nigerian-governor-kidnapped-germans-freed-45748015

“Nigerian security agents have freed two German archaeologists kidnapped by gunmen from a remote dig, the governor of northern Kaduna state said Sunday.

Governo Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai “commended the security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the Germans,” said a statement. It gave no details of the rescue or where the Germans are now. Nor did it say whether anyone has been arrested.

Gunmen had been demanding a ransom of 60 million naira (about $200,000) for the release of Professor Peter Breunig and his assistant, Johannes Behringer. The two were abducted at gunpoint Wednesday and walked into the bush from an archaeological dig near Jenjela village in Kaduna state. Two villagers who tried to help the Germans were shot and killed by the kidnappers, the police said.

Breunig, 65, and Behringer, in his 20s, are part of a four-person team from Frankfurt’s Goethe University. The other two members, women, were not touched by the kidnappers. The Germans were collaborating with Nigeria’s National Commission for Museum and Monuments to recover relics of the Nok culture. The early Iron Age people, considered the earliest ancient civilization of the West African region that is now Nigeria, are famous for their terracotta sculptures.

Kidnappings for ransom are common in Nigeria, with ordinary residents and even schoolchildren targeted as well as foreigners. Victims usually are freed unharmed after a ransom is paid, though security forces have rescued a few high-profile abductees.

Nigeria’s acting President Yemi Osinbajo had summoned the federal police chief on Thursday for a briefing on efforts to find the Germans.”

  11. Fire at large Swedish refugee center injures at least 15 (abcnews, Feb 26, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/fire-large-swedish-refugee-center-injures-15-45746043

“Swedish police say at least 15 people have been injured when a fire broke out overnight at one of the country’s largest refugee centers outside of Vanersborg in southwestern Sweden.

Police spokesman Tommy Nyman says two people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries after jumping out of a second-floor window to escape the blaze and 15 people in all were treated for smoke inhalation.

He said police received the alarm at 4:15 a.m. Sunday and all 158 people in the building were evacuated. Firefighters extinguished the flames.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Nyman said police would open an investigation.

Last year, there were 112 fires at Swedish refugee and reception centers, most of them arson.”

  12. Sweden: two women raped in a taxi, perpetrators still at large
    Posted on February 26, 2017 13:00
    By Vincent van den Born

While Swedish media are fighting the ‘good fight‘ against Trump, Swedish police broke the news that two women were reportedly raped in Järfälla, a community North East of the Swedish capital Stockholm. Alerted to the scene at 4:30, the two victims were, according to police spokesperson Carina Skagerlind,

“taken to the hospital to make the checks needed on these occasions.”

So what happened in Sweden on the night of Saturday to Sunday? Two women are reported to have taken an unbooked minicab from a restaurant. But instead of being driven to their desired location, the driver and another person took them to a wooded area outside of Järfälla. Described as an old military barracks, the area is now a recreational area. There, the women were raped in a way that one report describes as “rough.”

The forensic investigation of the “scene of the alleged crime” has taken almost the entire day. The area was cordoned off and searched with dogs. The technical investigation was closed at 2.52 PM, after which the area was opened to the public again. One person was taken into custody for questioning, but has since been released. According to Skagerlind, “this person is still being investigated.”

  13. Why the EU can’t make sense of the world and why its downfall is imminent
    Posted on February 26, 2017 12:00
    By Timon Dias

At its core, what is the EU? And why, despite its vast resources, does it seem perpetually unable to make sense of the world and meet its objectives? The two answers lie hidden in the EU’s very DNA.

First, there’s the EU’s primary internal contradiction: EU federalism is an ideology that propagates post-ideologism; a culturally amorphous post-ideological world.

A cosmopolitan easy going agnostic world, in which the single market and currency have made nationalism obsolete. Indeed, a world where the European Parliament invites a long haired bearded shemale to perform in front of its building and announces him/her as “The voice of Europe” singing for equality, without anyone batting an eye.

The EU’s core problem, however, is that in its way of viewing and engaging the world beyond Brussels’ boundaries, it is acting as if the world has already arrived at this so badly coveted post-cultural/ideological end station.

This is why the EU’s foreign minister is convinced political Islam should be part of the solution for Europe’s bicultural malaise. It is why for almost a decade now, the EU is maintaining it is reasonable to expect a German fiscal discipline from Greece ? a country in which tax evasion has been a central pillar of its culture ever since it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire some 600 years ago. It is why the EU fails to grasp the fact it’s deepening the migration crisis by acting as a ferry service for human traffickers. It is why the EU refuses to acknowledge an inherently expansionist religion like Islam views Europe’s open borders as an invitation to conquest. And it is why it was caught off guard by the mass rapes in Cologne etc. Because in the EU’s world, man in its natural state never existed and the Rape of the Sabine Women was never told.

    • This is a very good article on why the EU will fail no matter what the bureaucrats in Brussels do in their effort to maintain their cushy jobs.

  14. FRANCE – Nantes -Protesters Block Le Pen Supporters Trying to Reach Rally

Demonstrators in western France have tried to block buses carrying supporters of presidential candidate Marine Le Pen to a campaign rally.

The incident Sunday in the city of Nantes came after 11 police officers were injured Saturday in skirmishes with activists opposed to Le Pen’s appearance there. No injuries were reported from Sunday’s bus protest.

Sebastien Chenu of Le Pen’s National Front party said on BFM television that the protesters were “trying to stop us from delivering our message. We will not back down.”

Critics allege that Le Pen’s anti-immigration, anti-establishment campaign is a cover for a racist, anti-democratic worldview.

Recent polls suggest she could win the first round of the April-May election, but predict she would lose the ensuing runoff vote.

    • France: Le Pen accuses government of ‘complicity’ in Nantes protest riots

National Front presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said the protests against her arrival in Nantes which descended into violence on Saturday occurred with “more or less the obvious complicity of the government” at a campaign rally in Nantes, Sunday.

SOT, Marine Le Pen, National Front presidential candidate (French): “We will never submit to see far left militia ransack, burn and attack the physical integrity of our policemen as we saw it again in Nantes yesterday with more or less the obvious complicity of the government.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, National Front presidential candidate (French): “The state cannot act against the nation and Republic as it has done for decades. Allowing the legal and illegal migrants to flow, will end with the subversion of our country and the destabilisation of entire parts of the territory. Mayotte like Guyan where I went on a trip, like Calais where I’ve been again recently, are a meaningful example of the uncontrolled immigration and the lack of state. I should say it’s worrying. The French have enough of massive illegal and legal immigration.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, National Front presidential candidate (French): “How can Mr Fillon, who presents himself as the ‘anti-Trump’ with an anti-protectionist position and free market program, be able to talk with America? I say to the French: take a look at the world. It is changing in front of us. In this new world, I am in the better place to speak in the name of France with a chance to be understood and heard.”

  15. Seattle mayor Ed Murray delivers State of City address from Northgate mosque

SEATTLE — Seattle mayor Ed Murray gave his 4th State of the City Address Tuesday, outlining several new proposals.

But this year, the speech wasn’t given at the usual spot at City Hall, instead it was given at the Idris Mosque in Seattle’s Northgate neighborhood, in what he called a show of solidarity with the city’s Muslim community.

“We are here, because we are a welcoming city to all,” Murray said as he opened his speech. “We stand in support and solidarity with the Muslim members of the Seattle community.”

Murray said he also wants to know exactly what President Donald Trump has planned for cities like Seattle that vow to resist federal immigration enforcement actions.

Murray said Seattle was filing public records requests with the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies seeking information about the Trump administration’s definition of “sanctuary cities” and what “enforcement actions the federal government may take against us.”

Seattle has vowed to protect immigrants and refugees and to not help federal authorities. Murray has instructed city departments to rework budgets to prepare for the possibility that federal dollars could be lost if Trump cuts aid.

The Trump administration, in documents released Tuesday, detailed how it was expanding the number of people living in the U.S. illegally who are considered a priority for deportation, including people arrested for traffic violations.

Murray said he also wants information about changes to federal travel and immigration policy, including a program designed to protect people brought as children to the U.S. illegally.

“We believe that the rule of law is on our side, and we will take legal action if the federal government does not answer our requests in a timely manner,” Murray said.

And Murray said he would convene a summit of mayors in the region to explore ways they can be welcoming places “for all.”

On the issue of the city’s homelessness, Murray said he has asked business leaders and council members to come up with a funding package to help provide housing for the homeless.

The plan could increase property taxes by about $150 a year for the median Seattle household and would raise $55 million a year to pay for increased homeless services.

“As you know, this would not have been my first choice, we had hoped for a partnership with the federal government, but again we are on our own.”

He hopes to quality a measure for the August ballot that would hike taxes on residential and commercial properties to pay for more mental health and addiction treatment and housing.

Murray will also activate the city’s emergency operations center for as long as needed to respond to people living on the streets. The center is typically only used during severe storms, natural disasters or massive city events.

The city says it will apply the coordination and communication tools of the emergency operations center to address homelessness in the city.

Murray declared a statement of emergency in late 2015 as the number of people living outside spiked.

The mayor is also proposing a soda tax of $0.02 per ounce, which he says could help raise about $16 million a year for education programs.
