Teacher ‘reassigned’ after praising Trump action on immigration
NAPLES, Fla. – An elementary school teacher in Collier County, Florida was reassigned to administrative duties over a Facebook post during the “Day Without Immigrants” protest last Thursday.
Parkside Elementary School computer lab instructor Veronica Fleming linked to a Chicago Tribune story about the nationwide protest and offered her take on the situation.
“The funny part about immigrants staying home is the rest of us who pay for them are here at work like we’ve always been. Looks like less mouths to feed today. Have fun while you still can. So glad to hear about massive deportation. Let’s make America great again. Thanks Donald Trump!”
Collier County Public Schools spokesman Greg Turchetta told the Naples Daily News Fleming’s post didn’t sit well with parents of students at Parkside Elementary, 96 percent of which are minorities.
“This is a very tight-knit neighborhood school that stands for inclusion,” he said. “The teachers have nothing but love for these students. Anything else is not a reflection of the school.”
Juanita Perez, an immigrant mother of two, told NBC 2 she was “offended” by Fleming’s online comments.
“My feelings are hurt for our kids,” she said. “I couldn’t even believe it. How could a teacher speak like that?”
Other parents contend the post was “racist.”

US official: ISIS has ‘people in place’ to conduct ‘steady’ attacks
WASHINGTON — The Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) terror group is under heavy global pressure from militaries and law enforcement organizations, but military and counterterrorism officials forecast no letup in the current wave of international terrorism.
“We think that transnational terrorist attacks, in the near term, will probably remain steady. The group has been able to build a robust and redundant apparatus for conducting transnational terrorist attacks,” said a U.S. defense official.
ISIS will likely continue to employ a less-centralized approach to attacks, the official said — one driven by slick, incendiary online messages.
“They have a lot of people in place already that are sympathizers around the world. … We think they will be able to continue to be able to produce at least a constant level of propaganda, which underpins a lot of the ideology in Europe and elsewhere,” the official said.
Currently in Europe, the terror threat, which is high, is driven by ISIS, Al Qaida and other mostly Salafist groups.
Kristian Bartholin, deputy head of counterterrorism at the Council of Europe, said, “Due to the current high alert levels, it is difficult for terrorists to operate in traditional cell structures; hence, we see more ‘lone wolf’ attacks.”

Vandals target historic Jewish cemetery in University City
UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KTVI) – Investigators with the University City Police Department are working to determine who knocked over or damaged dozens of headstones at a local Jewish cemetery Thursday morning.
Police would not say if they considered the vandalism at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery to be a hate crime.
It is believed there was some organization behind the crime, meaning this was not the act of one individual.
The tombstones vandalized are in an older section of the cemetery; much of which pre-date 1960.
A steady stream of people were stopping by to see if the toppled headstones belonged to any of their family members who are buried at the site.
“These are holocaust survivors that are in here they shouldn’t have to endure anymore trauma let them be settled,” said Robin Rickerman whose elders including great aunts and uncles are buried at the gravesite.

Vandals destroy over 100 Jewish headstones amongst dozens of bomb threats to Jewish centers
St. Louis’s Fox2 has reported that over 100 headstones at the Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in University City Missouri have been vandalized, and knocked over.
Police believe the act was organized, and that the crime was carried out by a group of people. At this time, police cannot determine if this was a hate crime or not.
This vandalism comes on the heels of dozens of bomb threats made earlier today on Jewish community centers around the United States. 11 of these were evacuated, and searched.
According to the Jewish Community Center Association’s Director of strategic performance David Posner, there is concern about how often these threats have been appearing. So far there have been a total of 69 since January 9th./strong>

French far-right National Front presidential candidate Marine Le Pen canceled a meeting on Tuesday with Lebanon’s grand mufti, its top cleric for Sunni Muslims, after refusing to wear a headscarf for the encounter.
Le Pen, among the frontrunners for the presidency, is using a two-day visit to Lebanon to bolster her foreign policy credentials nine weeks from the April 23 first round, and may be partly targeting potential Franco-Lebanese votes.
Many Lebanese fled to France, Lebanon’s former colonial power, during their country’s 1975-1990 civil war and became French citizens.
After meeting Christian President Michel Aoun – her first public handshake with a head of state – and Sunni Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri on Monday, she had been scheduled to meet the Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian
He heads the Dar al-Fatwa, the top religious authority for Sunni Muslims in the multireligious country.
“I met the grand mufti of Al-Azhar,” she told reporters, referring to a visit in 2015 to Cairo’s 1,000-year-old center of Islamic learning. “The highest Sunni authority didn’t have this requirement, but it doesn’t matter.
“You can pass on my respects to the grand mufti, but I will not cover myself up,” she said.
The cleric’s press office said Le Pen’s aides had been informed beforehand that a headscarf was required for the meeting and had been “surprised by her refusal”.

“POLICE have shot at a speeding driver barrelling towards Barcelona city centre in a stolen truck stuffed with gas cylinders.
Tourist hotspot Barcelona, popular with Brits, is on high-alert after the shoot-out on Tuesday morning.
The butane truck had been stolen earlier that day from outside the Institute of Marine Medical Research Institute (IMIM), police confirmed.
Officers pursued the vehicle through the streets culminating in a high-speed chase.
As the truck tore through the city several butane gas cylinders fell off the back, injuring one passer-by.
The vehicle reportedly rammed several cars as it tried to evade the police.
Officers eventually shot at the truck bringing it to a stop, with bullet holes seen peppering the windscreen.
Police have confirmed the vehicle was headed for the city centre when they opened fire.
The driver, named as Swede Joakim Robin Berggren, has been arrested by police.
Berggren, born in 1984, was uninjured.

“At least 74 bodies of African migrants have washed ashore in western Libya, the Libyan Red Crescent said Tuesday, the latest tragedy at sea along a perilous trafficking route to Europe.
The bodies were found near the western Libyan city of Zawiya on Monday, Red Crescent spokesman Mohammed al-Misrati told The Associated Press, adding that he feared more might surface. He said a torn rubber boat, the kind that usually carry up to 120 people, was found nearby.
The Red Crescent’s branch in Zawiya said there are bodies still floating out at sea but it has no means to retrieve them.

the daily caller – House Dem IT Guys In Security Probe Secretly Took $100K In Iraqi Money
Rogue congressional staffers took $100,000 from an Iraqi politician while they had administrator-level access to the House of Representatives’ computer network, according to court documents examined by The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group.
The money was a loan from Dr. Ali al-Attar, an Iraqi political figure, and was funneled through a company with “impossible”-to-decipher financial transactions that the congressional information technology (IT) staffers controlled.
Imran Awan, ringleader of the group that includes his brothers Abid and Jamal, has provided IT services since 2005 for Florida Democrat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairwoman. The brothers are from Pakistan.
The trio also worked for dozens of other House Democrats, including members of the intelligence, foreign affairs and homeland security committees. Those positions likely gave them access to congressional emails and other sensitive documents.
The brothers, whose access to House IT networks has been terminated, are under criminal investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police.
Wasserman Schultz resigned from her DNC post following a disastrous email hack during the 2016 campaign. Her House spokesman did not respond to TheDCNF’s question Monday about Imran’s employment status. As of Feb. 6, she had declined to fire Imran.
Investigators found that congressional information was being copied to an off-site server and they suspect the brothers of improperly accessing information and stealing congressional property. Chiefs of staff for the employing Democrats were notified Feb. 2.
Soon after Imran began working for members of Congress, Imran’s and Abid’s wives — Hina Alvi and Natalia Sova — also began receiving congressional paychecks, TheDCNF found. Imran’s employers included two members of the intelligence committee, Indiana Democrat Rep. Andre Carson and California Democrat Rep. Jackie Speier.
By 2009, the family was simultaneously managing a full-time car dealership in Virginia, with Abid running day-to-day operations after contributing $250,000 in startup cash. It was called Cars International A, LLC, referred to as “CIA” in court documents.
Imran boasted unusual clout among House Democrats, and was even pictured conversing with former President Bill Clinton. After Rao Abbas, who was owed money by the dealership, threatened to sue amid allegations of deception and theft, Abbas appeared on the congressional payroll and received $250,000 in taxpayer payments.
Abid had “100% control” of the dealership, a one-time business partner said in court documents, in addition to his $165,000-a-year job working full-time for multiple representatives, including Ohio Democrat Tim Ryan and California Democrat Jim Costa.
“He had the dealer license and sole responsibility of running it. Abid would put cars on the lot, take them in consignment, sell them, do all the title work and get money from the retail sale,” according to court documents. Multiple emails show the Awan brothers conducting business such as attending car auctions on weekdays.
“Imram later acted as owner since CIA was considered family business by the Awans,” Abid’s one-time business partner, Nasir Khattak, said in court documents. The car dealership’s finances consisted of byzantine transfers in which staff and cars were often swapped between it and a dealership next door, Khattak said.
Despite numerous family members making $160,000 congressional salaries, debts went unpaid by the brothers, including to the Congressional Federal Credit Union.
“It was very bad record-keeping in Cars International … it is close to impossible to make any sense out of all the transactions that happened,” Khattak said in court documents.
The $100,000 loan came as the dealership continued to rack up debt, court records show.
“Ali Al-Attar was out of the country as he was involved in politics and the formation of the Iraqi government,” Khattak said in court documents.
In addition to his other jobs, Imran is a real estate agent, and Khattak is also a realtor who obtained the cash from Al-Attar and passed it through bank accounts used for real estate deals in Fairfax County, Va.
“Having lost my and Abid’s collective investment of $500k due to Awan’s mismanagement, [CIA] was further in debt $400k to other creditors,” Khattak said in a lawsuit.
Khattak said Imran masterminded the family’s finances and by late 2010, Imran “was running the business in full control” and “instructed Abid not to even speak to anyone.”
The Iraqi cash disappeared amid a dispute between Khattak and the Awans. Khattak said defaulting on the loan meant Al-Attar now owned the business, but the Awans refused to relinquish control.
In 2012, Abid declared personal bankruptcy listing more than $1 million in liabilities. While debts to others went unpaid, he kept ownership of two houses, and Imran kept his own substantial property, despite his admitted role in the failed business.
Bankruptcy documents listed Abbas as a creditor and said he might sue Abid, but Abbas later took the brothers’ side in a lawsuit against Khattak, who said that the Awans had somehow manipulated him to do so. Not long after, Abbas appeared for the first time on the congressional payroll, and collected $250,000 from taxpayers through the end of last year.
Four out of the six Democrats he worked for also employed Imran. His employers included a member of the intelligence committee, Patrick Murphy of Florida; a member of the foreign affairs committee, Theodore Deutch of Florida; and Brad Ashford of Nebraska, who is on the armed services committee.
Abbas’ congressional email was cut off in early February, around the time the Capitol Police revealed that they had uncovered a scheme involving a network of IT aides. The Awans’ access has also been cut off. Reached at a personal email address, Abbas did not respond to repeated questions from TheDCNF.
Abid claimed the Iraqi doctor may never have existed. “If as suspected, all of this is a charade, particularly if it is learned the mysterious Dr. Al-Attar doesn’t exist or didn’t sign the documents, then the whole matter rises to a higher level,” he said in court documents.
The youngest Awan brother, Jamal, was also placed on the House payroll at 20 years of age and makes $160,000, far higher than others in similar jobs.
TheDCNF was the first to identify the brothers and Alvi, and now, Sova and Abbas.

BREITBART EXCLUSIVE: Lawmakers to Request Probe of $418M Arms Sale to Kenya on Obama’s Last Day
A group of lawmakers is planning to request a congressional investigation of a $418 million U.S. weapons sale to Kenya approved by the Obama administration on its last day in office.
The sale, approved by the State Department and privately notified to Congress on January 19, would allow Kenya to buy 14 weaponized crop-duster-like planes — including two trainer planes and services, for missions against terrorist group al-Shabaab.
The deal was publicly announced the Monday after Trump’s inauguration.
A handful of lawmakers, led by Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC), are questioning why the contract to produce the planes was awarded to major defense firm L3 Technologies — which has never produced such a plane — while a smaller, disabled veteran-owned company in North Carolina that already make those planes at a lower cost was not considered.
The Mooresville, N.C. company, IOMAX USA Inc., costed out 14 planes at $237 million dollars, according to a Budd aide.
“It looks like politics,” Budd said in a phone interview with Breitbart News on Monday. “Why are they sending it to someone that’s produced zero, for twice the price? This is inappropriate.”
Later this week, Budd and several other GOP congressmen are planning to request the non-partisan investigation.
It is not just Republicans puzzled by the matter. Georgia Democrat Sanford Bishop will join Republicans in signing a letter being sent to the Kenyan ambassador to the U.S. on Tuesday.
The letter, obtained first by Breitbart News, says, “We believe Kenya would benefit by exploring its options in regard to this acquisition.”
“We ask that the Government of Kenya take these facts, in particular the prospect of an ongoing congressional investigation of this sale, under consideration as it decides whether or not to proceed with this arms purchase,” says the letter.
The request for an investigation comes after the lawmakers have unsuccessfully tried to figure out how the New York-based L3 received the “sole-source” primary contract, which means there is only one known source for the equipment requested, or only one single supplier that can fulfill the requirements.
IOMAX was unaware of the contract until the State Department, which approves all foreign military sales, publicly announced it on Jan. 23, the Monday after Trump was sworn in.
Typically, with a foreign military sale, an ally would notify and work with the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, a Pentagon agency, to request weapons.
DSCA would then work with the nation to specify requirements and write a Letter of Request for the weapons. The letter would be sent to an “implementing agency.” After price and other details are worked out, the Pentagon would issue a recommendation, and the State Department would approve or disapprove the sale. The DSCA would receive about a four percent cut of the total sale.
Lawmakers suspect, though have no evidence, that in this case, the implementing agency — an Air Force acquisition office, known as the “Big Safari” at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, steered the contract to L3.
The Air Force directed all inquiries to DSCA and the State Department, which is in charge of the process.
A State Department official, in emails obtained by Breitbart News, said in justifying L3’s selection that the Kenyan Ministry of Defense “conducted extensive market research.” At the same time, the official said the State Department did not possess that research. An Air Force official also said in an email that it was not provided the market research.
Lawmakers question whether Kenya did its own extensive research. The aide said Kenya initially requested MOOG, an ordnance company, to produce the planes, according an Air Force response to congressional inquiries.
That request somehow got “clarified” to L3, who will modify the requested Air Tractor planes into weaponized versions.
“We believe that the Air Force likely did something that had MOOG get replaced with L3,” the aide said.
The aide said it doesn’t make sense, especially since IOMAX first began producing the weaponized planes in 2009 and has dropped more than 2,000 bombs on al-Shabaab already.
IOMAX had used the Air Tractor airframe in its earlier versions, but switched to Thrush, based in Albany, Georgia. It currently has almost 50 of the planes in service, including in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Jordan, the aide said.
The planes were first designed after the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment requested them for Yemen, the aide said. IOMAX’s founder, Ron Howard, is a retired Army aviator with the unit. He founded the company with his son in 2001.
Budd said he is looking out for jobs in North Carolina. IOMAX, which takes in about $1 billion a year in sales compared to L3’s $10 billion, has 115 employees in his district, with 49 percent of them veterans who make an average of $115,000 a year — many of them special operations forces veterans.
“Our first interest is to look out for jobs in the district. These are guys who are cutting sheet metal and doing rivets at the same time as those who are installing weaponized system…It’s a whole work force down there,” Budd said. “It’s infuriating that they’d be cut out of a deal like this.”
“They have to earn this deal on their own,” he added. “We can’t get the deal for them. But we want them to have a fair shot at it…They shouldn’t catch the brunt of politics.”
The L3 contract would primarily benefit its Platform Integration Division in Waco, Texas. An L3 spokesman did not respond to a phone call asking for comment.

Although the 30-day notification period for Congress before a foreign military sale can go forth ended Sunday, lawmakers can still halt the sale by passing a resolution of disapproval.
Budd also introduced a joint resolution in the House earlier this month to halt the sale. If the resolution is adopted, it would be the first time Congress has voted to block a foreign arms deal since 1986.
Co-sponsors of the resolution include Reps. Meadows, Jones, Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), and Gary Palmer (R-AL).

SWITZERLAND – Ten arrested over attack on pair at Winterthur mosque
Police in the canton of Zurich arrested ten people on Tuesday morning suspected of attacking two others at the An’Nur mosque in Winterthur because they tipped off a journalist about a controversial sermon given by the mosque’s imam.
The ten suspects, aged between 17 and 53, were arrested after a raid on a dozen houses in the Winterthur area, the Zurich public prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday.
It is alleged the ten were involving in an brutal attack on two Muslims on November 22nd.
The pair are thought to have tipped off a journalist about a controversial sermon given by the mosque’s imam in late October.
In his sermon the imam called for the murder of Muslims who do not participate in communal prayer, and for others to denounce such people.
The media’s reporting of the sermon resulted in the arrest of the imam and three others in early November.
Two were later released but the imam and a board member of the mosque are facing prosecution for inciting crime and violence.
The An ‘Nur mosque was then suspended by the Zurich Federation of Islamic Organizations (Vioz), which said the imam’s words “contradict the commitment to Swiss rule of law and democracy that we ask of all our members”.
Following Tuesday’s arrests, criminal proceedings have now been opened against nine adults and one juvenile for allegedly badly beating and threatening the two people suspected of having given the journalist information on the sermon, said prosecutors.

The Logic of Trump’s Foreign Policy
The basic contours of a consistent approach are beginning to take shape.

Amid the seeming disarray of President Trump’s foreign policy, critics seem unable to make up their minds: Either Mr. Trump is upending America’s traditional postwar priorities, such as by denigrating NATO, or he is easily accommodating conventional wisdom, such as by accepting the “One China” policy. Which is it?
These critiques miss the logical thread that ties together Mr. Trump’s actions. Although it is too early to expect the president’s foreign policy to be fully fleshed out, especially after the abrupt resignation of Mike Flynn as national security adviser, the White House appears to be guided by a consistent approach.
On foreign issues that directly affect domestic concerns, Mr. Trump pursues radical change. But on matters that are truly foreign, he is willing to adopt a traditional stance. What looks like inconsistency is actually an instinct deeply grounded in his worldview.
This explains the president’s withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and his desire to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. Some charge that this is a betrayal of America’s decades-long commitment to a liberal global economic system. But Mr. Trump sees it as a domestic priority, a necessary shielding of American workers. Instead of sweeping, multicountry agreements, he has proposed bilateral trade pacts, beginning with Britain and possibly Japan.
On pure foreign policy, Mr. Trump has stayed the course for now. After initially questioning the relevance and utility of America’s main postwar alliances, he now seems committed to them. The president and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis have affirmed the mutual-defense agreements with Japan and South Korea. Mr. Mattis had tough words for NATO allies last week when urging increased military spending, but walking away seems a remote possibility.
Even more surprising was the recent phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Mr. Trump dropped his criticism of the “One China” policy that has defined relations with Beijing since the 1970s. Mr. Mattis, during a visit to Japan, also calmed fears that the U.S. Navy might physically confront Chinese vessels in the South China Sea.
The Trump administration has kept Russia at arm’s length, too, despite the president’s continued praise of Vladimir Putin. U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has made clear that American sanctions will remain in effect unless Russia withdraws from Ukraine.
Mr. Trump rejects the widely held belief that globalization always benefits American interests. This may be his most lasting challenge to the postwar international order. Still, the Trump administration appears willing to live up to commitments and responsibilities that do not impose costs at home.
None of this means Mr. Trump’s policies will go smoothly. But critics are wrong to claim he is suddenly kowtowing, seeing the wisdom of “orthodoxy,” or being tamed by the establishment.
At least so far, Mr. Trump has been remarkably consistent. Critics from the left and right should accept that the next four years of American foreign policy will be defined by a mix of traditionalism and radicalism.

The Trump administration’s U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has hit the ground running. She spoke truth to power by strongly calling out the United Nations for its anti-Israel bias and double standards. Her predecessor, Samantha Power, never came close.
After attending her first regular meeting of the UN Security Council devoted to the Middle East, including the Palestinian-Israeli situation, Ambassador Haley remarked to reporters, “The first thing I want to do is talk about what we just saw in there.” Calling the meeting “a bit strange,” Ambassador Haley noted how the focus of blame for everything that has gone wrong in the Middle East seemed to be placed almost entirely on Israel.
“The discussion was not about Hezbollah’s illegal build-up of rockets in Lebanon,” Ambassador Haley said. “It was not about the money and weapons Iran provides to terrorists. It was not about how we defeat ISIS. It was not about how we hold Bashar al-Assad accountable for the slaughter of hundreds and thousands of civilians. No, instead, the meeting focused on criticizing Israel, the one true democracy in the Middle East. I am new around here, but I understand that’s how the Council has operated, month after month, for decades. I am here to underscore the ironclad support of the United States for Israel. The fact that Russians are right about migrants in Europe, about Muslims and about EU does not mean that the Russians are our friends. Anyway, couple of days ago Russian politicians got orders not to talk well about Trump.
No he isn’t our friend, but unless the Dems get their way he isn’t our open enemy. We can work with him against the Islamic invasion as long as we don’t fall into the trap of thinking he is a good friend.
Right now the West has enough enemies (a lot of them internal) without going out of our way to create a new one. We need him as an ally in the MIddle East right now, after the current mess is cleaned up we can then confront him over his expansionism. Unless of course he does start moving west as a conquer. CANADA – Islamic centre in Red Deer targeted with hateful message scrawled in snow
Snow was the canvas for a hateful message scrawled outside a Red Deer mosque, and now Mounties are on the hunt for the man who left it there.
Red Deer RCMP said the unidentified man was caught on surveillance video outside the Red Deer Islamic Center on Douglas Ave. about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, when he approached the stairs and stopped to leave a message police are calling a hate crime.
Mounties didn’t describe the exact message left behind, but said it was signed E.K.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect approaching from the north and then leaving in the same direction. No actual damage was caused to the building.
RCMP noted any public incitement of hatred against identifiable groups are considered hate crimes under the Criminal Code, and they take such complaints very seriously.
The suspect, whose picture has been released by police in hopes of finding him, was wearing a hoodie and a ball cap along with a jacket, possibly Carhartt brand, along with light-coloured pants and dark running shoes.

WaPo- For a Trump adviser, an odyssey from the fringes of Washington to the center of power
On the night of President Trump’s inauguration, Sebastian Gorka attended the celebratory balls in a high-necked, black Hungarian jacket. Pinned on his chest was a Hungarian coat of arms, a tribute to his father who had been tortured by the communists, and a civilian commendation from the U.S. military.
For years, Gorka had labored on the fringes of Washington and the far edge of acceptable debate as defined by the city’s Republican and Democratic foreign policy elite. Today, the former national security editor for the conservative Breitbart News outlet occupies a senior job in the White House and his controversial ideas — especially about Islam — drive Trump’s populist approach to counterterrorism and national security.
Amid the cheering, music and confetti that night, Gorka talked about Trump’s opening shot in a high-stakes civilizational war, still in its early days.
“Everything’s changed,” Gorka said.
He homed in on three words from Trump’s dystopian inaugural addressthat day: “Radical Islamic terrorism.”
“When he used those three words today — radical Islamic terrorism — he put the marker down for the whole national security establishment,” Gorka told an interviewer from Fox News.
For Gorka and his allies, the words are more than just a description of the enemy. They signal a radical break with the approach that Republicans and Democrats have taken over the past 16 years to counterterrorism and the Muslim world.
Only days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, President George W. Bush insisted the terror strikes had “violated the fundamental tenets of the Islamic faith.”
“Islam is peace,” he told a nation still reeling from grief.
President Barack Obama sounded the same theme routinely during two terms in office.
Gorka has relentlessly championed the opposite view.
For him, the terrorism problem has nothing to do with repression, alienation, torture, tribalism, poverty, or America’s foreign policy blunders and a messy and complex Middle East.
“This is the famous approach that says it is all so nuanced and complicated,” Gorka said in an interview. “This is what I completely jettison.”
For him, the terror threat is rooted in Islam and “martial” parts of the Koran that he says predispose some Muslims to acts of terror.
“Anybody who downplays the role of religious ideology .?.?. they are deleting reality to fit their own world,” he said.
Gorka is a deputy assistant to the president. He reports to Stephen K. Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist, and is a member of his Strategic Initiatives Group. Bannon has spoken in similarly apocalyptic terms of a “new barbarity” that threatens the Christian West.
Most counterterrorism experts dismiss Gorka’s ideas as a dangerous oversimplification that could alienate Muslim allies and boost support for terrorist groups.
“He thinks the government and intelligence agencies don’t know anything about radicalization, but the government knows a lot and thinks he’s nuts,” said Cindy Storer, a former CIA analyst who developed the agency models that trace the path from religious zealotry to violence.
Religious scholars are equally withering. “I can’t overstate how profoundly dangerous this is,” said Omid Safi, a professor of Middle Eastern studies at Duke University. “This is music to the ears of [the Islamic State]. This is what they seek.”
Gorka has heard all of those criticisms before and fought against them — often ferociously. Last month, as he celebrated at the inaugural ball, those critics no longer seemed to matter. Trump’s victory demonstrated to Gorka and his supporters that the common sense of the American people counted for far more than the opinions of experts in Washington and the cloistered world of academia. His side had won.
Before he wrapped up his inauguration night interview, Gorka said he had one last message for America’s troops — “the guys inside the machine” — and its enemies. He turned toward the host, his medal glinting in the TV lights.
‘The alpha males are back,” he said.
‘The Islamic laws of war’
Gorka’s ideas about radical Islam began with his father’s fight against the communists in his native Hungary and his deep Catholic faith.
The elder Gorka and a small group of Christian students in Budapest were sending secret, coded messages to London when he was captured by the communist regime, tortured and given a life sentence. In 1956, he escaped and fled to the United Kingdom, where Gorka was born and raised.
When al-Qaeda struck on Sept. 11, Gorka said, he immediately saw the event through the prism of his father’s decades-old life-and-death struggle.
“Yes, it was jihadi terrorism .?.?. but, more importantly, that event was linked to communism. It was linked to fascism,” he said. “Why? Because al-Qaeda, ISIS, all of these groups are totalitarians — either you surrender to them or they will kill you.”
His other insight, he said, was that the Washington foreign policy elite was too quick to discount the role of religion.
“Their worldview is fundamentally challenged by anybody who takes religion seriously, and you know what? I take religion seriously,” Gorka said. “Because when you take seven minutes on a video to decapitate another human being by manually sawing off their head, that’s the power that religion can have or a distortion of religion or whatever you want to call it. .?.?. My father was tortured — tortured for weeks — by the communist secret police in Hungary. I didn’t start decapitating people when I found out what happened to my father.”
Gorka’s core idea is that the United States should partner with a shortlist of Muslim allies — Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt — that he describes as “secular” or willing to separate Islam from the running of the state. Together, they should fight the jihadist religious ideology in the same manner that America fought to discredit communism during the Cold War.
That insight, he said, led him to study Islam, starting with the faith’s ancient texts. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” he said. “Would you take anybody’s views on Christianity seriously if they hadn’t read the New Testament? Of course you wouldn’t. So I read the Koran.”
Gorka’s academic credentials, particularly on the subject of Islam, are thin. He went to college in London and spent three years as a reserve intelligence soldier in the British army, focused on the conflict in Northern Ireland. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he cycled through think tanks in Washington and Europe, dabbled in Hungarian politics and taught courses in counterterrorism at the George C. Marshall Center in Germany, which focuses on educating midcareer NATO and allied military officers.
He earned his doctorate from a Hungarian university in 2008 and a few months later landed a faculty job at the College of International Security Affairs (CISA), a new Pentagon-funded school that was still working toward accreditation.
There, he was a dynamic lecturer and an uneven scholar, said retired Col. Mike Bell, the school’s chancellor.
Gorka does not speak Arabic and has never lived in a Muslim-majority country. His knowledge of Islam comes largely from reading English translations of Islamic texts and interacting with foreign officers who account for about two-thirds of the CISA student body and come largely from Muslim nations.
Sometimes, the Muslim students would object to his views of their religion. “I tell them very simply that I am not here to debate Islam,” Gorka said. “Nobody has the right — even a Muslim — to talk for all Muslims.” His goal, he said, was to understand how the enemy interpreted the faith.
In other instances, his fellow professors would challenge his contention that the Koran’s violent passages are the primary driver of terrorism.
“There’s crazy stuff in the Bible, too,” said David Ucko, who taught alongside Gorka for three years at CISA.[…]
Gorka countered that the argument misrepresents Christianity, and he cited the Crusades, which are often invoked as a war against Islam. “The fact is that none of what happened in the Crusades can be justified by the message of Jesus Christ on the cross taking all of our sins upon himself,” he said in an interview. “It’s just not possible. .?.?. If a crusader killed a woman and child or a heathen, that cannot be theologically justified and therefore it’s wrong and it’s a sin.”
Islam’s martial passages and intermingling of faith and politics makes it different, Gorka said. “If you are pro-fundamentalist in interpretation,” he said, “you have a lot of argumentation on your side.”
Ucko said he quickly dropped the argument “for the sake of harmony.”
Gorka’s former supervisors pushed him to incorporate other perspectives on Islam and publish in peer-reviewed journals where his ideas would be challenged and perhaps tempered, Bell said.
But Gorka insisted that he wasn’t interested in that kind of scholarship.
“What I care about is if somebody in the field is reading my article,” he said. “I see myself as somebody who supports the bravest of the brave — the warfighter. Publish or be damned? I’ll be damned, thank you very much.”
Off campus, Gorka began meeting with conservative members of Congress and lectured regularly at the Army’s Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.
In 2014, Gorka left to take a teaching job at Marine Corps University that would give him more freedom and new influential connections. The school is part of the Defense Department, but Gorka was not hired as a government employee. His academic chair was funded by Thomas Saunders III, a major Republican Party donor and chairman of the conservative Heritage Foundation.
Saunders and Gorka were related by marriage, but Marine officials who oversaw the selection process said they were not aware of the tie. Saunders said he did not advocate for him.
Gorka began appearing regularly on Fox News and caught the eye of Bannon, who was then editor of Breitbart. Bannon offered him a job at the news outlet. A conservative publishing house signed him to a book contract.
At Marine Corps University, enthusiastic officers eagerly packed Gorka’s lectures, even as many faculty members took a dim view of his work.
“He made a difficult and complex situation simple and confirmed the officers’ prejudices and assumptions,” said retired Lt. Col. Mike Lewis, who served as an assistant professor and Special Operations chair at the school.
Said James Joyner, an associate professor: “The guy he was on Fox News is the guy he was here — bombastic and a showman.”
A few complained that Gorka’s TV appearances, which touted his ties to the school and bashed Obama, made it appear as though the government-funded school for Marine officers actively opposed the commander in chief. The school’s vice president for academic affairs said he raised the matter with Gorka. But the controversy never spread much beyond the university’s Quantico campus.
Shortly after the Islamic State burned alive a Jordanian pilot in 2015, Saunders invited Gorka to New York to do lectures on terrorism and Islam.
Saunders had made his fortune as a managing director at Morgan Stanley and founder of a successful private equity fund. He had done business all over the world. Like many Americans, he said his thoughts often turned to the Middle East and the threat of terrorism.
“What the hell is going on?” he said he often found himself thinking. What possible explanations could exist for the savage behavior he was seeing on television and online?
In Gorka, he had finally found someone with answers. One of Gorka’s lectures took place at the Colony Club, an exclusive all-women’s club on Park Avenue.
“Why do they behead us?” he recalled Gorka asking the standing-room-only crowd. “And why did they choose to burn alive this Jordanian pilot who had flown missions over Syria?”
Gorka explained that the answer could be found in the “Islamic laws of war,” which, he said, ordered Muslims to behead infidels and prescribed an even worse punishment for apostates, who should “suffer as if they are already in hell.”
When Gorka was finished, the “place could not stop talking about terrorism,” Saunders said. “It was spellbinding. .?.?. This is a true scholar telling you what happened and why. He is very detailed and very specific.”
‘The crucible of public policy’
For much of the past 16 years, Bush and Obama had played down Islam’s role in fueling terrorism. Like many in Washington, they worried about provoking a backlash against Muslims or feeding the jihadists’ clash-of-
civilizations narrative.
“Islam is not part of the problem,” Obama said in his seminal 2009 speech at Cairo University. “It is an important part of promoting peace.”
Such characterizations not only failed to describe the war being waged within Islam but they didn’t match what people such as Saunders were seeing in blood-drenched news reports from the region and hearing on the campaign trail, especially from Republican candidates.
In speech after speech, Trump described the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorists in grisly terms: “Children slaughtered, girls sold into slavery, men and women burned alive, crucifixions, beheadings and drownings. Ethnic minorities targeted for mass execution. Holy sites desecrated,” he said in a fiery 2016 address in Youngstown, Ohio. “.?.?. We cannot let this evil continue.”
The solution, Trump said, was to mount a Cold War-style campaign that “would take on the ideology of radical Islam.” He spoke of banning immigrants from terrorist hotbeds and imposing religious tests to weed out those who “believe that sharia law should supplant American law.”
Many of the ideas in Trump’s terrorism speeches had their origins in Gorka’s work. Other elements traced back to Frank Gaffney Jr., a senior Reagan-era Pentagon official who founded the Center for Security Policy, a Washington-based think tank.
Gaffney has long been politically radioactive in Washington. He drew widespread condemnation for suggesting that Grover Norquist, a Republican anti-tax stalwart, had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. In a much-derided piece in Breitbart, he suggested that the logo for the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency “bore a disconcerting resemblance to an amalgamation of the Obama campaign’s logo and the symbols of Islam.”
The Washington Times pulled his column and he was barred from speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. “It has been my lot in life to be criticized and even punished .?.?. for telling the truth,” Gaffney said in a recent interview.
But outside Washington, Gaffney has amassed a considerable following that knows him through his speeches and “Secure Freedom” radio program. Both Gorka and his wife, Katharine, a counterterrorism analyst and a Trump political appointee in the Department of Homeland Security, have been regular guests on the show.
Dire warnings from the likes of Gaffney, Gorka and many others seem to have had an effect on Americans’ view of Muslims. In the first years after the 9/11 attacks, about 25?percent of Republicans said they had an unfavorable view of Muslims, according to soon-to-be-published research by Charles Kurzman, a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since 2012, the percentage of Republicans with negative views has been consistently more than 50?percent.
“Part of the reason for the increase is this campaign on the part of people like Gorka and Gaffney to inflate the terror threat,” Kurzman said. “It’s troubling.”
Gaffney is still too controversial to land a job in the administration, but for the first time in nearly three decades, he has allies in the White House and real hopes, he said, that his ideas will finally be “tested in the crucible of public policy.”
Chief among those allies is Gorka.
Few in Washington noticed when Gorka began advising Trump and his ideas began showing up in the candidate’s speeches. Despite a best-selling book and numerous Fox News appearances, he existed outside the orbit of established national security experts.
‘A new sheriff in town’
Just three days after Trump’s election, Gorka addressed a cheering room of people who had helped pave his way to the halls of power. The audience consisted mostly of retirees who had gathered at the Breakers hotel in Palm Beach, Fla.
They were Gorka’s admirers: regular people, deeply afraid of terrorism and eager to listen to a man whose frightening insights would soon be receiving a hearing at the highest levels of the U.S. government.
“I’m accused by many people of being the most serious man on television,” Gorka said in his plummy British accent. “Today, it might be a little different. I am in a different mood. Today, I am going to start with something a tad naughty.”
He moved through the crowd of people who had paid up to $1,500 to hear him speak. “We are happy, right? We are happy,” he said.
There were nods and quiet applause as Gorka fished around in the pocket of his yellow blazer, searching for his remote.
“I am going to show a picture I am not meant to show usually,” he said.
He paused to draw out the suspense before pressing the remote’s button.
Up popped a photograph of a dead, bloodied brown-skinned man, lying on the ground next to an AK-47 assault rifle. The audience began to cheer — first hesitantly and then with gusto. Gorka’s booming voice filled the room.
“We can win now,” he thundered. “We can win!”[…]
Gorka’s former colleagues view his ascent with a mixture of surprise and alarm.
“It’s quite staggering,” said Ucko, Gorka’s former teaching colleague. “If you are a fan, you are enthralled. If not, it’s crazy to think we live in a time when he’s wandering the halls of the West Wing and advising the president. It is surreal.” 🙂 🙂 🙂
At the Pentagon and the State Department, senior officials scrambled to figure out who he was and what his populist foreign policy views might mean for America’s approach to the Muslim world and counterterrorism.
A few changes seem possible. Trump could boost support to strongmen such as Egypt’s Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, whom the president has hailed as a stalwart ally in the war against radical Islam. Gorka has described Sissi, criticized by human rights groups for his assault on political opponents, in particular the Muslim Brotherhood, as “enlightened” and a “reformer.”
Trump could designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization — a move that Gorka and his wife have long advocated. Such a designation would put the United States in direct conflict with the Middle East’s largest Islamist movement and its millions of followers.
Gorka’s high-profile role in the administration’s earliest days suggests that Trump’s populist foreign policy instincts, at least for the moment, are ascendant.
In the first hours after the troubled rollout of the president’s executive order on immigration and refugees, the White House dispatched Gorka to defend the move on Fox News. Within days, he was everywhere — and loving it.
“There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Donald Trump,” he told CNN anchor Jake Tapper.
On the BBC, he blasted the media for its “absolutely fallacious” coverage.
On NPR, he insisted that even Iraqis were “thankful” for Trump’s order, which banned them from entering the United States.
Then he disparaged the thousands of protesters demonstrating at airports as the “chattering classes .?.?. people totally disconnected from the reality of November 8.”
“I find it quite amusing, sadly so,” he said.
The NPR host thanked him for his time.
“It’s been a delight,” Gorka replied, his voice brightening.

Vanity Fair – 5 Things to Know About Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s Jihad Whisperer
The former professor, Fox News pundit, and anti-Muslim scholar has adopted a nebulous new role in the White House.
The confusion surrounding the untraditional cast of characters now lurking in the West Wing has not been aided by their collective lack of experience as public servants. White House Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon, considered the architect of Trumpism, has never served in government, leaving foreign lawmakers scrambling to decipher his writings for clues to his thinking. Nor has Reince Priebus, Kellyanne Conway, or Jared Kushner. This trend is also evident in the second rung of Trump’s inner circle, which includes the inexperienced yet vocal and declamatory deputies Stephen Miller and K.T. McFarland. This week, the press zeroed in on another neophyte at its nucleus: Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to the president, a former editor at Breitbart, and an infamous anti-Muslim scholar who subscribes to the controversial “global jihadist” theory. Gorka has been one of the immigration ban’s most ardent defenders over the past month.
Here’s what you need to know about the Bannon acolyte who is quickly becoming a familiar administration mouthpiece on Fox News :
1: Gorka is an ideologue . Gorka’s father was a Catholic dissenter in Communist-era Hungary, and was tortured and sentenced to life in prison after he was caught sending messages to London. He escaped to the United States in 1956, and his story left a profound impact on the young Gorka, particularly after 9/11. “Yes, it was jihadi terrorism .?.?. but, more importantly, that event was linked to communism. It was linked to fascism,” he said, according to the Washington Post. “Why? Because al-Qaeda, ISIS, all of these groups are totalitarians—either you surrender to them or they will kill you.”
2: His anti-Muslim scholarship isn’t well-regarded in the academic community. Anyone hoping to get a clearer distillation of Donald Trump’s foreign-policy philosophy would be well-served by looking at Gorka’s body of academic work on Islam. Unfortunately, there is very little: Gorka, who has a doctorate in political science, “does not speak Arabic and has never lived in a Muslim-majority country,” the Post reports. “His knowledge of Islam comes largely from reading English translations of Islamic texts and interacting with foreign officers,” whom he met as a faculty member of the College of International Security Affairs, and, later, at Marine Corps University. His colleagues said that even then, he was an extremist. “He made a difficult and complex situation simple and confirmed the officers’ prejudices and assumptions,” Lt. Col. Mike Lewis, an assistant professor at Marine Corps University, recalled. Another associate professor, James Joyner, accused him of being “bombastic and a showman,” much like his Fox News persona.
His fellow academics often challenged his interpretation of the Koran as the theological foundation of terrorism, and often pushed him to publish in peer-reviewed journals, which he resisted. “What I care about is if somebody in the field is reading my article,” he told the Post. “I see myself as somebody who supports the bravest of the brave — the warfighter. Publish or be damned? I’ll be damned, thank you very much.”
3: He works for Steve Bannon. Gorka became better known to the world—though not the foreign-policy community, who dismissed his ideas as fringe—through right-wing media, where he became a Fox contributor and, later, the national security editor for Breitbart. The views he expressed on Fox, however, worried his colleagues at the Marine Corps University, who believed that Gorka’s statements indicated that the university opposed their commander-in-chief. Currently, he allegedly reports directly to Bannon in the White House.
4: Gorka believes Islam presents a civilizational challenge to the West. Throughout his career, Gorka has criticized the Islamic faith as inherently permissive of violence in the service of political ends, suggesting that the jihadist threat is a global challenge not limited to Islamic extremists. In his book Defeating Jihad, he argued that if the United States wanted to win the war on ISIS, it would need to jettison “political correctness” (he was an agitator chasing the Obama administration for not using the term “radical Islam”) and acknowledge the religious ideology at its center. “We cannot defeat our enemy unless we understand how religion informs his operations and defines our strategic objectives,” he said in a speech from 2016, shortly after Trump won the election.
In another speech given at the Colony Club in 2015, Gorka tied the savagery of ISIS, which had recently released a video of militants beheading an American journalist, to the tenets of Islam, which dictated that their enemies must “suffer as if they are already in hell.”
His belief that the ultimate goal of Islam is to impose “shari’a law” on the United States, and that the only way to confront radicalism is with radicalism in turn, has already had devastating effect on Americans’ perspectives on Islam: according to University of North Carolina sociology professor Charles Kurzman, over 50 percent of Republicans had unfavorable views of Muslims since 2012, compared to only 25 percent after 9/11. “Part of the reason for the increase is this campaign on the part of people like Gorka and Gaffney to inflate the terror threat,” said Kurzman to the Post. said. “It’s troubling.”
5: Gorka is working on what has been described as a shadow National Security Council. The deputy assistant to the president is now part of a newly-created think tank inside the White House known as the Strategic Initiatives Group, which, as the Daily Beast reported, would serve as a sort of “task force” that would work with both government agencies and the private sector on an unknown series of policy issues. Critics claim that the group was built to serve as a counter-National Security Council, and that it seemed to be constructed for Bannon’s purposes only. Gorka, whose relationship with Bannon goes back several years, said that the group is “very different” from the N.S.C.

SYRIA – CIA-backed aid for Syrian rebels frozen after Islamist attack:
CIA-coordinated military aid for rebels in northwest Syria has been frozen since they came under major Islamist attack last month, rebel sources said, raising doubts about foreign support key to their war against President Bashar al-Assad.
Rebel officials said that no official explanation had been given for the move this month following the Islamist militant assault, though several said they believed the main objective was to prevent arms and cash falling into Islamist militant hands. But they said they expected the aid freeze to be temporary.
The halt in assistance, which has included salaries, training, ammunition and in some cases guided anti-tank missiles, is a response to Islamist militant attacks and has nothing to do with U.S. President Donald Trump replacing Barack Obama in January, two U.S. officials familiar with the CIA-led program said.
The freeze reflects the troubles facing Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels in the almost six-year-old revolt against Assad, who now appears militarily unassailable in his core western region largely thanks to direct intervention on his side by Russia and Iran.
“The reality is that you have changes in the area, and these changes inevitably have repercussions,” said an official with one of the affected FSA rebel groups. He said no military assistance could “enter at present until matters are organized. There is a new arrangement but nothing has crystallized yet”.
The support funneled to vetted FSA factions has included contributions from Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia – states that have opposed Assad. It is one of several foreign aid channels to rebels. Others still function.
The CIA declined comment on the reported freeze in support. A Qatari official said his government had nothing to say on the matter. Turkish officials said only they could not discuss “operational details”. There was no word from Saudi Arabia.
Reuters confirmed the freeze with officials from five of the FSA groups that have been recipients of financial and military support from the so-called “MOM operations room”. It was also confirmed by two other senior FSA figures briefed on the matter.
They spoke on condition of anonymity given the covert nature of the CIA-backed program and the sensitivity of the subject.
Several rebels believed the aid halt was temporary, with new arrangements expected, but there was no clarity yet. Confirming the freeze, two senior FSA sources said donor states were aiming to send the aid to one, unified fighting force – a coherence that has eluded rebels throughout Syria’s civil war.
One of the FSA officials said he did not expect the rebels to be abandoned as they represent the best hope for blocking a further expansion of Sunni militant influence in Syria, and to fight back against the growing role of Iran there.
DECLINING REBEL FORTUNES
Idlib and nearby areas of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia provinces are among the last footholds of the anti-Assad insurgency in western Syria – the part of the country where he has shored up his rule by holding onto the main cities and the coast.
Islamists have long been seen as the more formidable insurgent force in the northwestern Idlib area though a dozen or more U.S.-vetted FSA groups have also operated there and nearby.
Last month’s militant assault on the FSA groups was launched by a group formerly known as the Nusra Front, al Qaeda’s official affiliate in the war until last year when it formally cut ties and renamed itself Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.
The Islamist militant onslaught led several FSA groups to merge with the powerful Islamist faction Ahrar al-Sham, widely believed to be backed by Assad’s foreign adversaries in the region.
That will likely give pause to foreign donors: Ahrar al-Sham is set apart from the FSA factions by a strongly Sunni Islamist ideology and it has previously fought alongside the Nusra Front.
Military aid to rebel groups has ebbed and flowed throughout the life of the program, U.S. officials said, as Washington and its allies have kept a close eye on any leakage to more militant factions, something one official called “a constant problem”.
TRUMP’S SYRIA POLICY NOT YET CLEAR
Before assuming office, Trump suggested he could end support for FSA groups and give priority to the fight against Islamic State (IS) militants , whose well-armed Islamist militants hold large tracts of eastern and central Syria.
But Trump’s administration has yet to declare a firm policy towards Syria and Iraq, despite his repeated vows to eradicate IS, so it has been “business as usual” with covert and overt training and military support programs, one U.S. official said.
Some FSA groups hope Trump’s animosity towards Iran could yet result in enhanced U.S. support.
Islamist militant forces attacked while FSA envoys attended Russian-backed Syria peace talks in Kazakhstan, accusing the rebels of conspiring with Moscow and Washington against Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. The United States has carried out a deadly series of air strikes against Fateh al-Sham in Idlib this year.
MOM-backed rebels had suffered a heavy blow in December when Syrian government forces ousted them from eastern Aleppo with decisive help from the Russian air force and Iranian-backed militias. Eastern Aleppo had been seen as an FSA stronghold. !!!!!!!!!!!
An official with an FSA group that has received MOM aid said none came this month “and there are no signals”. Another said a regular meeting of the MOM had been canceled this month.
“I expect a reorganization,” he said, adding that there were still around 15,000 combatants with FSA groups in the northwest.
The CIA-backed program has regulated aid to the rebels after a period of unchecked support early in the war – especially from Gulf states – helped give rise to an array of insurgent groups, MANY OF THEM STRONGLY ISLAMIST IN IDEOLOGY .
A similar program continues to operate in southern Syria with Jordanian backing. Some of the FSA groups backed through the MOM in the north continue to receive Turkish support as they participate in the Turkey-led Euphrates Shield offensive against IS and Kurdish groups to the northeast of Aleppo.
FSA groups have long complained that the aid provided falls far short of what they need to confront the better armed Syrian army. Their demands for anti-aircraft missiles have been consistently rebuffed.
U.S. intelligence and military officials said the leakage, sale and capture of U.S.-supplied and other weapons from units of the FSA to IS, the Nusra Front, and other splinter militant groups have been a concern since the CIA and U.S. military began arming and training a limited number of rebels.
From the start, said one of the officials, some U.S.-backed rebels have migrated from groups that were battered by Syrian government forces to others such as IS that were seizing and holding territory at the time. Aid has slowed or stopped in Idlib and nearby areas, officials said, amid fears the pattern may be continuing after rebels lost ground there.
Another U.S. official said FSA groups continue to mount significant challenges to Assad. “Despite the setbacks and no assistance in fighting back against a brutal Russian onslaught, the fact is they remain a viable fighting force,” the official said.

Hungarian police have arrested and will hand over to German authorities an Iraqi migrant suspected of raping a 13-year-old girl at a Hamburg train station in November 2016, Hungarian prosecutors said in a statement on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old man, whose identity has yet to be firmly established, was detained in Hungary based on a European Arrest Warrant issued by German authorities.
Hungarian prosecutors said the man, registered in Hungarian and German databases under different names and birth dates, was identified based on his fingerprints at a migrant holding camp in southern Hungary.

Swede stops car thief, gets 5 years in jail. Syrian child-rapist got 2 months

A Swedish court of appeals yesterday sentenced a 39-year-old man to 5 years prison time for severely wounding a car thief. On top of that the vigilant man has to pay his ‘victim’ 1.5 million kroner, being the equivalent of some $155.000 in compensation for his injuries.
The skirmish took place in early October of 2015 in Haninge, a municipality in the south of Stockholm. According to daily Aftonbladet, the 39-year-old and a friend were heading home after visiting a local pub, when they heard noises of glass being shattered. The sounds led them to a red Mercedes with a smashed window.
Inside the car, the vigilant Swedes detected a man in his forties wearing a scooter helmet. Their discovery soon resulted in an altercation, after which the 39-year-old tried contacting the police on his cell phone.
The car thief subsequently assaulted the 39-year-old by hitting him in the face. When the victim fought back, the criminal attacked the man with a type of hammer which is normally used for emergencies in buses. Despite this, the vigilante managed to subdue his opponent by getting hold of his helmet and beating him on his head with it.
After the fight, the 39-year-old called 911 and the injured man was arrested. In court, the vigilante successfully claimed to have acted out of self-defense, since he and his friend were both being attacked by the thief, and was therefore acquitted completely.
This verdict was later appealed by the car thief, leading to yesterday’s sentence. Apparently, the criminal suffered head injuries disabling him for 99 percent. The court blamed the 39-year-old for hitting the criminal when he was already lying down, judging the actions “outside of the scope of self-defense.”

On his weblog, Dutch investigative journalist Carel Brendel yesterday published an article on the first beneficiary of a subsidy, given out by the Democracy and Media Foundation (SDM). Brendel aimed some criticism at the subsidy earlier, writing that while SDM announced it, it is really paid for by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) and led by Maartje Eigeman, who worked for OSF. Brendel also writes that the subsidy is really another attempt by the OSF to influence Dutch elections: the subsidies, ostensibly to fight discrimination of Muslims, offered a ‘fast-track procedure’ for those that were focused on the elections. From this, Brendel concludes that:
With the first benefactor now known, it seems Brendel’s prediction was right. The winner is the Foundation Platform of Islamic Organisations Rijnmond (SPIOR). They will organise a National Islam debate in the Netherlands’ largest mosque, the Essalam Mosque in Rotterdam, which has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Wilders has been invited, but he already declined. As he has done before, declining to debate with members of the Dutch branch (FION) of the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe (FIOE).
Brendel writes, that this affair seems to confirm his scepticism concerning the subsidies handed out by SDM and OSF.
