Paris: Boulders block migrants from sleeping, prompt debate
PARIS (AP) — Aid groups say boulders placed under a Paris bridge are preventing migrants from setting up camp in an area that has been a magnet for people fleeing war and poverty around the world.
Paris City Hall insists that the boulders are not an anti-migrant measure, but were relocated from another site because of upcoming construction work.
The boulders are under a bridge in northern Paris where migrants often seek shelter. Aid groups say the boulders are part of an ongoing police crackdown on migrants.
City Hall insists it’s doing all it can to care for the hundreds of migrants who sleep in the streets of Paris every night. A migrant center set up by city authorities has taken in 5,200 people since November.

The timing is odd for the disclosure to the New York Times on Tuesday that Russia has operationally deployed a battalion of ground-launched cruise missiles (GLCM), whose capabilities violate the terms of the 1987 INF Treaty. So is the manner of disclosure: through an anonymous leak, rather than a formal announcement.
The unit is one of two battalions thought to be operational today; the other is at the military complex in Kapustin Yar (see map below), where Russia tests missiles as well as rockets for the Russian space program. The deployment is said to have occurred in December 2016.
If the news were that Russia has deployed the battalion to the border of Eastern Europe, the reason for disclosing it would be obvious. (It’s also a really good bet we would have been told that outright, rather than being left in suspense.) But although that originally seemed to be the implication, that’s not what the report says. The unnamed U.S. officials cited in the report didn’t state where the battalion was deployed.
In fact, NYT’s single reference to a possible operational deployment site alludes to unconfirmed reports that GLCMs may be deployed to a location in central Russia (i.e., Central Asia).
That could mean somewhere close to Kapustin Yar. But that wouldn’t be particularly meaningful, since there’s already an operational battalion in Kapustin Yar. A battalion in Kapustin Yar can threaten parts of Eastern Europe.
Or, it could mean that the deployed battalion is now fielded further east – which would quickly put it out of range of NATO nations.

Russia to share intelligence with Philippines, train Duterte guards
MANILA (Reuters) – Russia’s top security official on Thursday offered the Philippines access to an intelligence database to help it fight crime and militancy, and training for the elite forces assigned to protect President Rodrigo Duterte.
Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s Security Council and Vladimir Putin’s top security adviser, made the offer during a meeting between Russian and Philippine security officials in Davao, where he was visiting Duterte at his home city.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Russia had invited the Philippines to join a database-sharing system to help combat trans-national crime and terrorism, which he said could help track Islamist militants and their financial transactions.
In an interview with Reuters last week, Lorenzana said there were “very strong” links between Islamic State and militants in the Philippines.
Patrushev’s trip underlines Russia’s intent to capitalize on a radical recalibration of foreign policy under Duterte, who harbors resentment of the Philippines’ deep-rooted ties to the United States.
Duterte has made strong overtures towards China and Russia.

I am going to go away from what J. E. Dyer said, while remembering what she said.
Russia is sharing intel with the Philippines and will train the Presidential Guards, this ties in with the Russian shifting men and ships to the Islands they seized from Japan at the end of WWII. There is a real good possibility that Russia is not only trying to become a big power in the Pacific. The Land Based Cruise Missiles could be repeat could be positioned to threaten either Iran, Pakistan, India or China or a combination of all of the listed nations. To make better guesses I would have to see classified info and then would be unable to talk about it. What I am seeing is that Russia is forcing President Trump and the US to rebuild our military faster then we wanted and do it while fighting a quiet coup attempt by leftist in the government and a noisy could attempt by the al left Soros paid rioters.
While we are watching this and other situations develop remember none of this is happening in a vacuum while the Russians, the Chinese and the various Moslem groups are not necessarily working together each will take advantage of moves by the others to increase their power and try and keep the US at or near our current state of weakness. The talk within the tight-knit community of retired intelligence officers was that Flynn’s sacking was a result of intelligence insiders at the CIA, NSA, and National Security Council using a sophisticated “disinformation campaign” to create a crisis atmosphere. The former intel officers say the tactics hurled against Flynn over the last few months were the type of high profile hard-ball accusations previously reserved for top figures in enemy states, not for White House officials.

Noting that the Obama administration first tried to silence Flynn in 2014 when the former president fired him as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Williamson called Monday’s resignation, “stage Two of ‘Kill Mike Flynn.”

At least 50 killed in suicide blast at Pakistan’s Sufi shrine, Islamic State claims attack
At least 50 people were killed and more than 100 others injured when a suspected suicide attacker blew himself up at a Sufi shrine in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province on Thursday, the latest in a string of terror attacks in the country this week.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing, the terror group’s news agency Amaq reported.
The explosion occurred at the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar shrine in Sehwan town when a large number of people had gathered for ‘dhamaal’ (a Sufi ritual), Pakistani media reported.
Large crowds frequent the famed shrine, which has the mausoleum of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, on Thursdays.
The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, where several of them are stated to be in a critical condition, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.
Pakistan Armed Forces spokesperson Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor tweeted that army and Rangers have been deployed to the site for medical support.
Pakistan Air Force’s C 130 planes will lift injured from Nawab Shah airport and Navy helicopters will take victims from Sehwan and surroundings, he said in the tweet.
Recent terrorist attacks are being carried out “on directions from hostile powers and from sanctuaries in Afghanistan. We shall defend and respond,” he said.
Police official Muhammad Rashid said the shrine was the target of a suicide attack.
This was the fourth major terror attack in the country in five days.
On Wednesday, seven people were killed when suicide bombers targeted a van carrying judges in Peshawar and a government compound in the restive Mohmand region. Those attacks came two days after a suicide bombing in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, killed 13 people and injured dozens.
The Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the Taliban, claimed the attacks in Mohmand agency and Lahore while the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed the attack in Peshawar.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa have vowed to fight the new wave of terrorism, which broke a relative lull across the country in recent months. The manner in which the attacks are taking place suggests that the country’s fight against terrorism is not yielding results.

Police in France look likely to get a new set of rules that will give them wider scope to open fire when they feel threatened or under attack.
The new rules have been drawn up after several weeks of police protests across France and also to account for the heightened threat against officers from terrorists but also violent criminals.
The new law, which looks set to be rushed through parliament, will slightly loosen the rules around “legitimate defense” which officers must abide by when they use their weapon.

Baghdad car bomb kills at least 48
At least 48 people have been killed in Baghdad in the third blast in the Iraqi capital in three days, security and medical sources say.
A car packed with explosives blew up near car dealerships in the Shia area of Bayaa in the south of the city. More than 50 people were injured.
The Islamic State (IS) group claimed the attack, saying it targeted “a gathering of Shias”.
At least 24 people were killed in other attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Baghdad saw a wave of deadly suicide attacks by IS in the first few days of 2017, but the number had dropped until recently.
An AFP reporter at the scene of Thursday’s bomb reported seeing numerous burnt-out vehicles, and blood on the ground.
Security sources said the bomb was detonated in a busy street and was the deadliest attack in Baghdad for several months. A plume of smoke from the blast could be seen above the Bayaa neighbourhood for much of the day.
Medics have warned the number of fatalities and injuries could rise as they struggle to cope with scores of people wounded in the attack.
It is thought that car dealerships may present convenient targets for the militants because it is easy for them to leave vehicles laden with explosives alongside lots of other vehicles that are also parked in the same area.
As the clear-up operation gets underway, distressed relatives are reported to be at the scene desperate to find news of their loved ones.
The IS group has stepped up its attacks since the Iraqi army, aided by US-led coalition strikes, launched its campaign to dislodge the Sunni militant group from its stronghold of Mosul in the north four months ago.
The militants now control the west of the city, while the eastern part is held by Iraqi forces and their allies.

Palestine is many things. A Roman name and a Cold War lie. Mostly it’s a justification for killing Jews.
Palestine was an old Saudi-Soviet scam which invented a fake nationality for the Arab clans who had invaded and colonized Israel. This big lie transformed the leftist and Islamist terrorists run by them into the liberators of an imaginary nation. Suddenly the efforts of the Muslim bloc and the Soviet bloc to destroy the Jewish State became an undertaking of sympathetically murderous underdogs.
But the Palestine lie is past its sell by date.
What we think of as “Palestinian” terrorism was a low-level conflict pursued by the Arab Socialist states in between their invasions of Israel. After several lost wars, the terrorism was all that remained. Egypt, Syria and the USSR threw in the towel on actually destroying Israel with tanks and jets, but funding terrorism was cheap and low-risk. And the rewards were disproportionate to the cost.
For less than the price of a single jet fighter, Islamic terrorists could strike deep inside Israel while isolating the Jewish State internationally with demands for “negotiations” and “statehood.”

Let’s compare what President Trump has accomplished since the inauguration (with that enormous crowd!) with what congressional Republicans have done.
In the past three weeks, Trump has: staffed the White House, sent a dozen Cabinet nominees to the Senate, browbeat Boeing into cutting its price on a government contract, harangued American CEOs into keeping their plants in the United States, imposed a terrorist travel ban, met with foreign leaders and nominated a Supreme Court justice, among many other things.

What have congressional Republicans been doing? Scrapbooking?
More than 90 percent of congressional Republicans kept their jobs after the 2016 election, so you can cross “staffing an entire branch of government” off the list. Only the Senate confirms nominees, which they’ve been doing at a snail’s pace, so they’ve got loads of free time — and the House has no excuse at all.
Where’s the Obamacare repeal? Where are the hearings featuring middle-class Americans with no health insurance because it was made illegal by Obamacare?

Twitter has introduced an account limiting penalty for users that violate the platform’s terms of service.
Users across Twitter are reporting that their accounts are being “limited” as a punishment for the violation of Twitter’s rules. One user posted a screenshot of the notice they received: “Creating a safe environment for people to freely express themselves is critical to the Twitter community, so if behavior that may violate the Twitter rules is detected, certain account features become limited.”

Multiple sources reported three days ago that Nadeem Muhammed (43), was in court on Monday for flying with a pipe bomb in his hand luggage. He had been boarding a Ryanair flight to Bergamo, Italy when he was held under the UK’s Terrorism Act following a security screening. After allegedly telling officers the device had been planted by someone else, he was released on bail, however, and allowed to travel.
Which he did. He flew to Italy and stayed there while tests in the UK revealed that the ‘batteries’ were actually a “viable device“, containing sufficient explosives to cause “serious damage and loss of life” on board a plane, as heard by the court. Consisting of a “small pipe, like a large market pen,” it was filled with a “smokeless propellant often found in ammunition.” On his return to the UK by way of Manchester Airport on Sunday, Muhammed was arrested and charged with being in possession of an explosive substance. He is now back in custody and due to appear in court in March.

Minister of Defense, István Simicskó at a conference of the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) said that the Hungarian government aims to make its military one of the “most decisive” armies in the region. Using the greater potential ensured by the growth of the Hungarian economy, “unprecedented in the past 25 years,” the ministry has elaborated medium and long-term strategies, based on being able to respond to the “challenges of the present and the future.”
Known as Zrínyi 2026, the Ministry of Defence’s program prioritises the modernisation of soldiers’ individual equipment, including clothing and weapons, as well as developing the HDF’s aircraft and helicopter capabilities. To this end, two additional light helicopters have been added to the fleet already. Besides this, work has started on reviving the Hungarian defence industry, with plans to develop communication and information systems (CIS). In addition to overcoming conventional military challenges, Simicskó also discussed the increase in the number of cyber attacks as a topic of consideration.
At the same time, Hungary is facing real, non-virtual dangers in the form of the migration crisis and the increasing number of terrorist attacks against Europe. Simicskó praised the soldiers of the HDF for protecting Hungarian borders and citizens.
Study: 64% of Germans want Merkel gone

When asked by YouGov.de whether or not they thought it was time for Angela Merkel, who has been in office for nearly 12 years, to be replaced as Chancellor, almost two-thirds of Germans answered with a resounding ‘yes’. Merkel’s position is under fire in both East (69% in favour of change) as in the West of Germany (63%). With those supporting Martin Schulz’s SPD, which is in the running to replace the CDU as Germany’s biggest party, the number reaches 79%. Remarkably, even in her own party, 42% answer the question of Merkel’s possible replacement with a resounding “whatever happens!”
With elections in Germany nearing, YouGov asks the question whether or not the Chancellor is the ideal candidate to lead her party. Up to 35% of Germans give the CDU a better chance in the elections without her, while only 19% think the CDU will do better with Merkel at the helm.
The decision to support Frank-Walter Steinmeier for the post of President also proves divisive. While 37% of Germans thinks it would have been good for the CDU’s profile in the Bundestag elections, 37% think it would have been detrimental. As it is, the polls show a boost for the SPD, which is now polling ahead of the CDU, because of its appointment of Martin Schulz as party leader. Almost 47% believes his popularity will remain high until the elections, while 37% of respondents have their doubts.

Refugee charged with two violent rapes in Germany

German authorities yesterday pressed charges against a 31-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker for brutally raping two female exchange students (21 and 27 years old) in the city of Bochum in August and November last year. The youngest of the two victims, who both are Chinese nationals, almost didn’t survive the sexual assault. She was dragged into the bushes and then strangled with a rope, which nearly killed her.
According to Bild, police were able to apprehend the refugee from Iraq thanks to a friend of one of the victims. He was passing the crime scene where the rapes previously took place, when suddenly spotting a man lying in ambush in the thicket. After taking a picture of the suspicious individual he went straight to the authorities.
Soon thereafter, at the beginning of December, police managed to track the migrant to his place of residence, which turned out to be an asylum centre close by the university terrain. A suspect, named Zaid K., was arrested and a saliva sample was taken from him. At the time the man had been living in the German facility with his wife and two young children for about a year after fleeing his home country.

MP Iqra Khalid cannot advance the cause of extremist Islam on one hand and then complain about Islamophobia on the other. Her direct connections to Islamist front groups means she must either publicly disavow extremist groups such as Jamaah e Islami and the Muslim Brotherhood, or withdraw her motion.
Iqra Khalid is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale, elected in 2015. She recently tabled a motion in the House of Commons which would “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination.”
Clearly, the intent of her motion is not to address issues of discrimination, but rather to silence anyone who speaks out against Islamists in Canada.

The Muslim Student Association was founded by adherents of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1963. The Muslim Student Association has a series of alumni who have become suicide bombers, ISIS fighters and ISIS propagandists.
The Muslim Student Association at York University handed out a book at Islam Awareness Week with the title “Women in Islam & Refutation of some Common Misconceptions.” The chapter on WIFE DISCIPLINING (page 99 of the online version) makes the following observation: Submissive or subdued women. These women may even enjoy being beaten at times as a sign of love and concern.
The Muslim Student Association at Guelph University was also handing out similar literature in 2017.
