A pattern of Iranian aggression has accelerated in the year since the nuclear deal with Iran was implemented. Yet the Obama administration has ignored the comprehensive nature of the Iranian threat and soft-pedaled non-nuclear sanctions seemingly out of fear that Iran would walk away from the nuclear deal. As a result, Iran’s leaders have become more emboldened and its footprint continues to grow across the region.? Iranian advisors with Shia militias from as far away as Afghanistan flooded Syria, giving Tehran a military arc of influence stretching to the Mediterranean. Eleven Arab states also recently accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and meddling in their internal affairs.?
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control should not provide licenses to Boeing and Airbus until Iran stops using Iran Air and other carriers to ferry weapons and personnel for the Assad regime and Hizbullah in Lebanon. The new administration must also establish unmistakable red lines for continued Iranian harassment of U.S. Navy ships in the Persian Gulf. Only through a new campaign of pressure can the U.S. demonstrate to Iran that it runs very great risks if its policies don’t change and if it is ever tempted to pursue nuclear weapons again.

A Year after the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Ball’s in Tehran’s Court
?The impulse to scrap the Iran nuclear deal is understandable, but at this point renouncing the deal would be a lose-lose proposition. Iran has already pocketed over $100 billion in sanctions relief, the decision would cause friction with the other P5+1 states, and Iran would presumably be free to resume its program with no restrictions. Demanding renegotiation of the deal is also perilous. Renegotiation would take years, and what leverage would the international powers have to work with to pressure Iran, after having lifted the sanctions??
However, much can be achieved simply by changing the U.S. approach to the deal and to Iran, and by altering the rhetoric. The Trump administration should press to end the secrecy surrounding many of Iran’s nuclear activities and plans, reminding all that as a known and proven NPT violator, Iran lost its confidentiality privileges.?
Given the absence of any convergence of interests between the U.S. and Iran, the administration should set the ground rules for interactions with Iran, and preconditions for any future relations. Discussion in Europe today of steps to normalize relations with Iran is premature and misguided; it projects weakness vis-a-vis Iran’s aggression and provocations, and lack of political will to confront Iran with determination.?
Since the Iran deal was announced, Iran has displayed emboldened behavior: stepping up its missile program, including testing of precision-guided missiles that can carry a nuclear payload, and possible cooperation with North Korea on ICBM capabilities; increasing its military role in fighting in Syria and committing barbaric crimes against the Syrian population; repeated provocations against the U.S. Navy in the Gulf; continued holding of Iranian American prisoners as bargaining chips to squeeze more money; and continued sharp anti-American rhetoric.?
Defense Secretary-designate Gen. James Mattis told Congress that Iran is the biggest destabilizing force in the Middle East, and that the U.S. must have a strategy for confronting its regional hegemonic aspirations. NATO member Denmark is part of the U.S.-led operation “Inherent Resolve” against Islamic State and already has ground troops operating in Iraq.
“Based on a concrete approach from the coalition, the government has decided to expand the tasks of our special forces in Iraq and Syria,” said foreign minister Anders Samuelsen.

And though many such assessments will be written, among the most important issues to consider is the Obama administration’s record on religious liberty. As we’ll argue based on episodes throughout President Obama’s time in office, this administration oversaw an unprecedented effort to intentionally malign and dethrone religious liberty as a central pillar in American political and civil life. Notwithstanding this overall record, and though neither of us is a political supporter of Obama, we applaud the efforts made by the administration in a few areas to champion religious liberty.

For two terms the Obama White House staged a foreign-policy puppet show, while the real drama took place far from the spotlight—a mutant variation of [what diplomats call] dual-track diplomacy. . . . [But this] dual-track diplomacy was [unusual] because the public track was intended to cover for the real show going on behind the scenes. For instance, if it looked as if President Obama was at odds with Vladimir Putin over Russia’s destructive escalation in Syria and its role in crushing the rebels and killing civilians, nothing could have been farther from the truth. [The] president needed Putin to rescue Iran and save its regional position.
So while Obama was denouncing Putin in public, his White House errand boys were actually meeting in private with Putin’s errand boys, helping the Russians to accomplish the very things that the administration—especially the State Department—then publicly denounced. On bad days, it could look as if there were actually two U.S. governments, pursuing policies that were diametrically opposed to each other. In fact, there was only one government, led by Obama—and the policy of that government was entirely coherent, although not necessarily wise.
For what mattered most to Obama wasn’t Syria, nor even was it the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) [i.e., the Iran deal], which is typically referred to as Obama’s signature foreign-policy initiative. Even that was a feint, cover for a larger strategy that entailed a realignment of interests in the Middle East and a new form of foreign-policy “realism” that would get American troops out of the Middle East—and put America in the same column as Iran and its allies, including Vladimir Putin. . . .
No one saw more of the administration’s shell game than Israel. The White House reassured Jerusalem that it wasn’t going to sell Iran the farm—Israel was their ally, and Iran was the enemy. . . . [Although] the Israelis knew that Obama was lying about the [secret contacts with Iran in Oman], . . . they thought, like most critics of the Iran deal, that the administration was just flubbing negotiations and needed help. But the White House didn’t care that much about the particulars because the JCPOA was simply a device to allow for a larger, even more historic play—Obama wanted to get America out of the Middle East, and realigning with Iran was America’s exit strategy.

Islamic State sleeper cells could infiltrate Jordan to carry out terror attacks or attack the Jordanian border guard. The two refugee camps on the Syrian-Jordanian border, al-Hadalat and al-Rukban, which harbor 100,000 people, offer a convenient haven and staging ground for attacks against Jordan.. . . .
[In a rare interview,] General Mahmoud Freihat [the chief of staff of the Jordanian military] said that Jordan sometimes communicates with Bashar al-Assad’s regime via “liaison officers,” and that there have been talks on moving the two [refugee] camps several kilometers into Syrian territory. . . . The Jordanian chief of staff sees another danger . . . emanating from Islamic State in the form of the Khaled bin al-Walid Brigades, which has an Islamic State orientation and is operating only one kilometer from the Jordanian-Syrian border. According to General Freihat, the organization is equipped with tanks and heavy weapons. . . .
Jordan has long been supplying light weapons to the Bedouin tribes in southern Syria so that they can form a buffer zone and fight Islamic State forces and other jihadist organizations. Jordan is now signaling to Syria that it is prepared to cooperate with it in the war on Islamic State despite its disapproval of Syria’s close ties with Iran.

On 23 June 2010, a group of victims filed a complaint in Belgium to the Federal Prosecutor against certain Israeli civilian and military officials at the time, including Tzipi Livni, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian News Network (PNN).
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Livni would be intercepted by the Federal Judicial Police during her stay in Belgium to be heard and questioned following the complaint lodged against her and that it would ensure the necessary follow-up to this case.

Indiana Middle Schoolers Introduced to Whitewashed Sharia
As one parent said: The sharia curriculum is like saying that Hitler was as an effective ruler leaving out that he slaughtered 6 million Jews.
A middle school in Indiana has come under fire for a worksheet teaching students about sharia law that whitewashes the many human rights violations inherent in the body of Islamic law reported the Courier-Journal.
“The way that the worksheet is left would be like describing how effective Hitler was at nationalizing Germany and creating patriotism but leaving out that he slaughtered 6 million Jews,” said Dean Hohl, one of several parents who voiced his opinion at a recent school-board meeting.
The worksheet is part of the curriculum for seventh-graders at Highland Hills Middle School. On one part of the sheet is an account written by a fictional character, a 20-year-old Saudi woman named Ahlima, who writes that she feels “very fortunate” to live under sharia law in Saudi Arabia. She describes how she will soon become the second wife to a Saudi man.
As for the clothing a woman is her required to wear in Saudi Arabia, Ahlima says “Perhaps two differences Westerners would notice are that women here do not drive cars and they wear abuyah. An abuyah is a loose-fitting black cloth that covers a woman from head to toe. I like wearing the abuyah since it is very comfortable, and I am protected from blowing sand.”

Returning fighters pose a clear national security threat. It only takes one security lapse for a returning jihadi to be able to launch a terrorist attack in their country of origin. Mehdi Nemmouche, the terrorist who murdered four people at the Brussels Jewish museum in 2014 spent time in Syria where he is believed to have been a torturer for ISIS.
They could radicalize others
Radical jihadists can spread their hateful views. German jihadis have extensive radicalization networks among the Salafi community. When fighters return, they can use their “star status” and street credibility to spread the message of the Islamic State amongst disaffected youth.
They could further divide society
Sweden has offered a package of benefits to returning jihadis as a reintegration program. The controversial initiative, being tested in the city of Lund, provides returning fighters with a path to employment, housing, education and financial support.
These measures will alienate more conservative elements who will be incensed at what they see as excessively lenient treatment. The debate around appropriate handling of the situation will be used by extremists to increase division and mistrust, thus making it easier for radicals to push their agenda.
They could stretch limited resources.
It is very expensive and time consuming to monitor and track all returning fighters and the more who return, the harder that will be. Major Western countries are operating under large budget deficits and resources and being overstretched. Having to devote considerable police time and money to following returned fighters diverts money from other vital areas.
Even if no attack takes place, this achieves one of the goals of Islamism, to slowly bleed the West out through a strategy of “death by a thousand cuts.”
They could toxify the debate about legitimate refugees
With the myriad of conflicts taking place around the globe and in the Middle East in particular, there are many legitimate refugees seeking asylum in America and in Europe. When returning fighters slip in amongst this group, it creates an atmosphere of mistrust that negatively impacts the most vulnerable – legitimate refugees from the Middle East who are trying to escape jihad and war.
Fear of jihadi fighters can prevent those people from reaching the West and escaping the clutches of groups like ISIS, which is another victory for the terrorists.

Obama commutes sentences for 330 more federal prisoners
President Obama commuted the sentences of 330 more federal prisoners on Thursday, the second batch of clemency grants in his final week in office.
Mr. Obama’s action brought the total number of commutations during his presidency to a record-breaking 1,715, far more than any president in history. The offenders whose sentences were cut short Thursday were in prison for drug crimes, many serving life prison terms under stiff penalties imposed decades ago.
Earlier this week, Mr. Obama issued pardons and commutations for 273 individuals, including military-secrets leaker Chelsea Manning.
Of the 330 individuals whose sentences were commuted Thursday, 78 had been convicted of firearms offenses along with drug crimes. Some of the individuals were convicted of trafficking in large amounts of drugs. For example, Maria Aide Delgado of Weslaco, Texas, was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 218.5 kilograms of marijuana in 2007.
White House counsel Neil Eggleston said the total commutations have included 568 people who had been sentenced to life in prison.
“The vast majority of these men and women are serving unduly long sentences for drug crimes,” Mr. Eggleston said. “With today’s action, the president has granted more commutations than any president in this nation’s history and has surpassed the number of commutations granted by the past 13 presidents combined. The president set out to reinvigorate clemency, and he has done just that.”

Imam will issue Muslim call to prayer for Trump’s inauguration
The Trump transition team has confirmed that there will be an Imam issuing the Muslim call to prayer for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony Friday:
Imam Mohamed Magid of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Center, also known as the ADAMS Center, in Sterling, Virginia, will be one of 26 people offering prayers and reading from Scripture at the National Prayer Service that follows the swearing-in ceremony. The service occurs at the Washington National Cathedral.
Magid was elected president of theISNA – Islamic Society of North America in 2011, the largest Muslim group in North America, and the ADAMS Center was praised by the FBI “for their leadership role in building partnerships between law enforcement and the Muslim community to enhance mutual cooperation and public safety.”
But he has also been criticized on the right for granting a “diversity award” in 2011 to a Muslim CAIR director who made very controversial statements against Jews.
On of the campaign promises made by Donald Trump involved the banning of Muslims from immigrating to America, which was later watered down by his campaign and outright denied by his nominee to the ambassadorship to the United Nations, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, in her confirmation hearing Wednesday.

Islamic State using online ‘headhunters’ to recruit young Germans
Islamic State is using “headhunters” on social media and instant messaging sites to recruit disaffected young people in Germany, some as young as 13 or 14, the head of the country’s domestic intelligence agency said on Thursday.
Hans-Georg Maassen also drew parallels between the militant Islamist group and past radical movements such as communism and Adolf Hitler’s Nationalist Socialists that also tried to lure young people keen to rebel against their parents and society.
“On social media networks there are practically headhunters who approach young people and get them interested in this (Islamist) ideology,” Maassen told foreign reporters in Berlin.
He cited the cases of a German-Moroccan girl, Safia S., 16, who is accused of stabbing a policeman at a train station in Hanover in February last year, and a 12-year-old German-Iraqi boy who tried to detonate two explosive devices in the western town of Ludwigshafen in December.
In closing arguments at Safia’s trial on Thursday, prosecutors asked the judge to convict her of attempted murder, grave physical injury and support of a foreign terrorist organization, with a sentence of six years in prison. A verdict is expected on Jan. 26.
Prosecutors are also seeking a three-year sentence for Mohamad Hasan K., a 20-year-old German-Syrian accused of having known of Safia’s planned attack but not informing the police.
About 20 percent of an estimated 900 people from Germany who have been recruited by Islamic State to join the fight in Iraq and Syria are women, some as young as 13 or 14, Maassen said.

Le premier centre de « déradicalisation » de France, qui a ouvert en septembre 2016 dans le lieu-dit de Pontourny, en Indre-et-Loire, vient de connaître sa première déconvenue. Un de ses pensionnaires, Mustafa S., 24 ans, a été interpellé, mardi 17 janvier à Wissembourg (Bas-Rhin), où il profitait, selon les informations du Monde, d’une permission de sortie. Une perquisition s’est déroulée le même jour dans l’enceinte de l’internat, pourtant censé héberger des individus n’étant pas suivis par la justice antiterroriste.
Cette opération, menée par la Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI), met à mal les premiers petits pas du gouvernement en matière de déradicalisation. A tel point que le ministère de l’intérieur a passé consigne, jeudi 19 janvier, jour de la révélation par les Dernières nouvelles d’Alsace de l’interpellation du jeune homme, de ne laisser filtrer aucune information sur son profil, et encore moins sur son admission dans le centre.

VIENNA, Jan 20 (Reuters) – Austrian police arrested a man on Friday suspected of planning a bomb attack in Vienna, Austrian media said.
The man was arrested in a Viennese apartment by special forces at around 1700 GMT, a Vienna police spokesman told news agency APA, adding that foreign intelligence services had warned Austrian authorities about a possible attack.
“There were growing indications of a planned attack in the capital in the past few days,” he said.
There was no immediate comment from police, and the interior ministry declined to comment.

“A manhunt has begun in Paris after an attacker armed with a knife lunged at multiple passengers on the city’s Metro system on Thursday night, local media reported.
According to Le Parisien, the first attack took place at around 9:15pm local time on Line 7 near the Riquet metro station in northeastern Paris. A man, who did not know his assailant, was stabbed three times before being helped by bystanders and paramedics and taken to the hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

An expert weighs in on the “plagiarism” allegations.
The plagiarism allegations CNN leveled against conservative commentator Monica Crowley were part of a “political hit job,” according to a publishing law attorney with expertise in plagiarism cases.
Crowley, a popular TV pundit and Washington Times editor who holds a Ph.D. in international relations, previously worked for former President Richard Nixon years after he resigned his office.
Trump’s transition team stood by Crowley when the controversy erupted, stating, “Any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country.”
Crowley has suffered mightily because of the allegations. President-elect Donald Trump had asked her to become a national security spokeswoman but she backed out of the job offer. Her publisher has withdrawn one of her books, and critics of Crowley have raised the possibility that Columbia University could revoke her doctoral degree. The university hasn’t weighed in on the matter publicly.
It is significant that CNN’s smear vehicle is written by Andrew Kaczynski, formerly of BuzzFeed, the cat video-loving so-called media outlet run by Ben Smith, a gossip-loving left-wing former Politico reporter. Kaczynski quit BuzzFeed to join CNN in October.
The attorney who has weighed in on this case is Lynn Chu, a member of the New York State Bar who earned her juris doctor degree from the University of Chicago in 1982.
This desperate assault on Monica Crowley is just the beginning.

Nigel Farage has been hired as a commentator for American TV network Fox News, the broadcaster has announced.
The former UKIP leader will provide political analysis for the main channel, and the Fox Business Network’s daytime and primetime programmes.
Mr Farage has been one of the UK’s most prominent supporters of US President Donald Trump and appeared alongside him during his election campaign.
He was the first UK politician to meet Mr Trump after his win in November.
It comes shortly after he was given his own nightly show on UK radio station LBC.
Mr Farage travelled to Washington for Mr Trump’s inauguration on Friday.
After the ceremony he tweeted his approval saying: “A very strong speech by @POTUS. He means it.”
He also appeared on Fox Business to comment on the inauguration. He said: “Listening to the speech today, this is a political revolution and it’s very exciting.”
