“ASYLUM seekers will be dished out among EU member states, under plans proposed by the new President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, despite quota systems already being widely rejected.
Mr Tajani, who was voted in as the new president to replace Martin Schulz, will put migration rules at the top of his to-do list, as well as Brexit negotiations and rescuing EU trade policy as deals are in a dire state…”
SWEDEN CRUMBLING: Demands for military intervention as thugs turn Malmo into ‘no-go zone’ (express, Jan 19, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/755997/Sweden-Malmo-military-intervention-no-go-zone-crime-surge
THE Sweden Democrats have demanded soldiers should be sent to Malmo to reestablish law and order as violent thugs have turned the city into a ‘no-go zone’.
Launching a seething attack on the red-green parties in Malmo, Magnus Olsson said it was time to call in the military to end the surge in violent crimes that have been sweeping the city.
Painting a blake picture of Sweden’s third largest city, the opposition politician blasted Malmo has lost enough of its citizens to shootouts, grenade attacks and murders.
Speaking to Expressen, Mr Olsson also said there was a great lack of police officers in Sweden, which means officers could benefit from the armed forces’ resources…”
Sweden is collapsing under the weight of lawlessness brought on by the invasion of unlimited migrants that have no intention of assimilating into the Swedish Culture. Their plan is to force Sweden to assimilate into the Arabicized Culture of the Middle East. It will take a few more months before the Swedish Parliament gets desperate enough to send in the Army and by then the chaos in Malmo will have spread to other cities.
The question of which European nation will collapse first is answered, now we are asking who will be next? Another Scandinavian country or Germany? Maybe France or Italy?
Europe is turning into Lebanon in the 1970s and the alt leftist governments are watching because they are planning on using the chaos and destruction to set up strong man/woman rule and bring in full communism. The problem they face is how do they stop the Islamic Invaders? Are they planning on setting up death camps for all Islamic invaders and freedom loving Europeans?
Smug, Jew-hating sierra-oscar-sierra-bravos.
Let the “humanitarian superpower” serve as a cautionary example to leaders on the Continent. A leper in their midst might be useful.
It isn’t helping with the new EU President but it will probably swing a lot of voters in France and Germany if the collapse in those two nations wait long enough.
“A leper in their midst might be useful.”
Very well-said, yucki! Few things are more difficult to
pretend that they don’t existwish awayignoreexplain than a proverbial “trout-in-the-milk-pail”. Especially a pustular and leprous “rainbow” trout.I never heard that proverb – major stench.
How about saturation video coverage of “Today in Sweden”? It’s too good to keep that an RT monopoly.
“THE Sweden Democrats have demanded soldiers should be sent to Malmo to reestablish law and order as violent thugs have turned the city into a ‘no-go zone’.”
But, of course, no profiling will be allowed!

RADICAL ISLAMIST ATTACKS are the biggest threat to Sweden this year, report claims (express, Jan 19, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/756073/sweden-lone-wold-islamist-terror-attacks-isis-mats-sandberg-malmo
“ISLAMIC State are the main threat to Swedish security this year as the country fears ‘lone wolf’ terrorist attacks, an official report claims.
Following devastating terror attacks in Berlin and Istanbul in recent months, Swedish officials are concerned copycat attacks could be carried out as nations around Europe are put on red-alert.
ISIS are believed to be the main security threat to Sweden but there is an increased threat from individual radicalised Islamists who do not belong to terror cults, the report carried out by Nationellt Centrum För Terrorhotbedömning (NCT) has claimed…”
Project Schmalbart: Among the anti-populists (DW, Jan 18, 2017)
http://www.dw.com/en/project-schmalbart-among-the-anti-populists/a-37183346
“Members of Germany’s new anti-populist Schmalbart network have held their first meeting. Can left-wingers, conservatives, digital strategists and offliners work together to bring about meaningful change?
Thick snowflakes fly past outside the window; inside, there’s coffee and soft drinks. The “Innospace” room on the top floor of the Betahaus in central Berlin is jam-packed. Around 100 people with name tags stuck on their chests are standing around tables in small groups, talking earnestly: young women with hemp bags, senior citizens, people in their mid-30s with laptops and hoodies.
The media are here, too. And there are clear rules for them, and everyone else: no photos without permission, no audio or video recordings, no posting sensitive information about the event on Twitter. People are being careful; Schmalbart opponents are already taking aim at the group on social media.
80 percent IT and communication professionals
10:00 a.m.: An appearance by Christoph Kappes. The Hamburg-based IT entrepreneur is the whole reason for the gathering. He recently founded Schmalbart as a platform to counteract populism and misinformation, and to foster a better culture of debate on the internet. Initially, it was a reaction to the planned expansion of the right-wing populist US media group Breitbart News to Germany. Proudly, Kappes took to the podium to present the key data. Schmalbart members hail from various regions across Germany, with some Austrian members. Around 80 percent work in IT or communications, and two-thirds of the group are male.
But Kappes says there are also members who eschew the internet completely. “We are a mixed bunch, a mini-society,” he said. Initially, it was just a core group of activists involved in the planning, but because Kappes wants to see results as quickly as possible, he instigated the meeting in Betahaus. The goal: to agree on projects, strategies and formats by the day’s end.
Counteracting populist arguments
In Room D, one group is brainstorming a browser add-on. The idea is to highlight mistakes in argumentation in populist online articles, based on the 9th grade education curriculum. “Populist texts on the internet are often intellectually dishonest, and that just makes me mad,” said Thomas Bayer (not his real name), who suggested the add-on.
The others in the group of five are skeptical. Wouldn’t the installation be too big a hurdle? Would there be an editorial team? And who is the target group? It’s likely it would only reach those people who are already interested in transparency, Bayer concedes. He says he’s placing his hopes in “a conservative educated middle-class that refuses to be fooled.
Maybe there will be a few teachers who discover the add-on and use it in their teaching,” he said.
‘We have to be equally well prepared’
The neighboring room is so full that half of the participants are forced to stand. Christoph Giesa is taking questions. The 36-year old publisher is a sought-after figure at the event. Two years ago, he wrote a book about the right-wing current in mainstream society. Since then, he’s been hoping for a project like Schmalbart. He says he plans on developing an app on “how to deal with right-wing disseminators.”
His fellow Schmalbart campaigners have a lot of questions for him: What do members of the German right-wing AfD party or PEGIDA actually hope to achieve? When is it necessary to end a debate? Giesa says it’s important to know who you’re dealing with. That’s why he’s here. “We have to be just as well prepared as them,” he said.
Us and them – those words can be heard a lot at the event. But don’t such delineations lead to even more division? Won’t this lead to the initiative, which was founded on the need for more objectivity and a more civil debate culture, shooting itself in the foot?
There are projects on psycho-targeting, source verification, data visualization and media skills at school. Concrete ideas are developed for a fact databank and a satirical format. There’s a social media training on the agenda, as well.
Breitbart takes notice
Is Schmalbart the start of a social movement, or will the network become a fractured opposition? Even so, Christoph Kappes is satisfied. The event has helped launch plenty of new projects. He’s not perturbed about the increasing headwind the project is getting, thanks to growing media interest, nor the fact that the #schmalbart hashtag is being used in conjunction with verbal attacks on the group. One day later, it happens: Breitbart News reacts for the first time to Schmalbart. On its website, there’s talk of “cash-strapped lefties” demanding money for an anti-Breitbart website.””
Austrian defense minister announces new plans to strengthen border controls (DW, Jan 19, 2018)
http://www.dw.com/en/austrian-defense-minister-announces-new-plans-to-strengthen-border-controls/a-37185404
“Austrian Defense Minister Hans-Peter Doskozil has called for new measures to slow the flow of migrants into Austria. The plan puts special emphasis on the border with Slovakia.
Doskozil and Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka outlined several new measures on Wednesday meant to tighten border controls in an effort to further slow the stream of migrants into Austria.
The defense minister, pictured above, told the online version of daily newspaper “Kurier” that security needed to be tightened along specific parts of the border. “I’m recognizing a trend here that the smugglers are now using Slovakia,” Doskozil said.
He said 299 migrants have been intercepted so far this year while trying to cross into Austria from Slovakia. That’s in comparison with the 174 who were caught attempting to cross the border with Hungary.
Doskozil added that 282 asylum seekers who were caught this year trying to cross into Tyrol state were sent back to Italy. “There were only 25 asylum claims in Tyrol. Here the sending-back [of migrants] to Italy is working,” he said…”
German authorities ‘lose sight’ of three Islamists flagged as threats (DW, Jan 19, 2017)

“Authorities in Germany have reportedly lost track of three radical Islamists who have been deemed a security risk. The government is under pressure to prevent a repeat of last month’s deadly attack on a market in Berlin.

Girl who cried wolf over hate crime could be charged with filing false report (thelocal, Jan 19, 2017
http://www.thelocal.at/20170119/girl-who-cried-wolf-over-hate-crime-could-be-charged-with-filing-false-report
“A young Muslim girl who claimed she had been the victim of a hate crime at a train station and pushed onto the tracks has been accused of making it all up.
The 14-year-old, named only as Sinem, claimed on social media that she had been called a “terrorist” and was then pushed onto the tracks by a stranger who had taken offence at her headscarf at a railway station in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
She wrote on an online anti-discrimination and racism group that she was saved in the “last seconds” by another stranger who pulled her back onto the platform before a train pulled in.
She claimed she took herself to hospital after the alleged incident and police confirmed her parents, who are originally from Turkey, had filed a criminal complaint stating that she had been assaulted.
But now, police spokeswoman Irina Steirer says they are investigating whether it was a false claim after officers could find no trace of anything of the sort happening.
She said: “We have looked through the CCTV and at the time when the incident is alleged to have occurred nothing can be seen on the records.
“Both the alleged victim and the accused are captured on CCTV, but nothing ever happens and they are both simply seen getting on the train.”
She confirmed that police are now investigating whether the girl made it up…”
40 nationalities involved in terror activities (saudigazette, Jan 19, 2017)
http://saudigazette.com.sa/saudi-arabia/40-nationalities-involved-terror-activities/
“Nationals from 40 countries have been involved in terror and security cases the Kingdom witnessed during the past few years.
A statement issued by the Interior Ministry through its Tawasul (communications) portal said that 5,085 suspects are in detention in five intelligence prisons in the Kingdom.
Some of these suspects are serving their prison terms upheld by the Specialized Criminal Court of Appeals, some are under trial, while others are under interrogation by the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIP).
The statement said that there are 4,254 Saudis detained in intelligence prisons constituting the largest number of suspects. The Saudis are followed by 282 Yemenis and 218 Syrians.
There are three suspects from the US and one each from France, Belgium and Canada.
Suspects from other Arab countries include 57 Egyptians, 29 Sudanese, 21 Palestinians, seven Somalis, five Iraqis, three Lebanese, two Moroccans, 19 Jordanians, two Mauritanians, two from the United Arab Emirates, 10 from Bahrain, two from Qatar, and one each from Libya and Algeria.
Suspects also include a Chinese, three Filipinos, 19 Indians, 68 Pakistanis, six Iranians, seven Afghanis, four Turks, four Bangladeshis and one from Kyrgyzstan.
There are 17 detainees from Chad, three from Ethiopia, four from Nigeria, two from Mali and one each from Angola, Burkina Faso and South Africa.
Through the Tawasul window the detainees can make audio-visual contact their families and relatives.”
Building a dam to block the ever increasing volume of truth available on the internet is a doomed enterprise. Once people have got the blinkers off there’s no putting them back on.
When the MSM doesn’t match what people see and experience themselves, they vote with their feet/keyboards.
Glad for Vlad!

Divorce rates up by 71% in Qatar (gulfnews, Jan 19, 2017)
http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/qatar/divorce-rates-up-by-71-in-qatar-1.1964489
“Divorce rates have increased by 71 per cent among Qatari men over 15 years, an expert has said.
According to Mohammad Ali Akbeed, a population expert at the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, 471 Qataris applied for divorce in 2000, but the number grew to 807 in 2015.
The expert was addressing a panel of representatives from seven government agencies and civil society organisations during a discussion on reasons and consequences of divorce in the Qatari society.
“We now have to deal with really frightening numbers,” Ahmad Al Buainain, a family and social activist, said.
“In the 1990s, we had five or ten divorce cases before the courts, but now the figures are much higher and frightening and divorce has become a real worry for families and society in general. We do need quick solutions and proposals from experts in order to protect ourselves,” he said, quoted by Qatari daily Al Raya on Thursday.
Al Buainain said poor choices of spouses topped the list of the causes of divorce in Qatar, followed by the incompatibility of the spouses.
“This incompatibility could be the huge difference in their ages, academic levels, financial status or social position,” he said.
“Other major reasons for divorce are more women are working today, the absence of contacts before the marriage and the insistence of parents on their son or daughter marrying a relative, even though there is no chemistry between them.”
In his presentation, Al Buainain said that women could cause the collapse of their marriage by making too many demands from their husbands, disrupting their harmony and undermining their concord.
“The relentless interference of family members, especially parents, in the affairs of the spouses is also another cause of divorces. We also have several marriages that suffered from overspending on lavish wedding ceremonies that ended up leaving the groom in deep debts and in deeper woes that affected their morale and their bon-vivant characters,” Al Buainain said.
Some marriages ended in divorce because the spouses were not adequately prepared for married life and lacked the skills to deal with all kinds of situations.
Within the social traditional constraints that are heavily felt by all, Qatari families tend to favour marriages between relatives, often cousins of the first or second degrees.
A recent research put consanguineous marriages in Qatar at 35 per cent, at 25 to 42 per cent in Saudi Arabia and at 21 to 28 per cent in the UAE.
According to Al Buainain, the rate of divorce in marriages between cousins of the first degree was 19 per cent and between of the second degree at 17 per cent.
Divorce rates between Qataris who are not cousins were 64 per cent, he added.
In September 2008, Qatar made premarital check-up for genetic, infectious and chronic diseases mandatory.
Under the family law, the marriage contract is invalid without the certificate that the medical check was carried out.”
Free Speech and Terrorism – Whatever you do, don’t mention Islam!
http://quillette.com/2017/01/06/free-speech-and-terrorism-whatever-you-do-dont-mention-islam/
Whatever you do, decent progressive people, when terrorism comes up, don’t be “Islamophobic” and mention Islam! If Islam comes up anyway, do draw false equivalencies and hobble yourselves, citing Western imperialism as a moral hamartia disqualifying you from taking critical stances about the faith of a beleaguered minority. Studiously ignore freethinkers in that same minority, and, of course, those facing persecution in Muslim-majority countries. And definitely throw ex-Muslims — especially ex-Muslim women — under the bus. (…)
Remember, after all, you have the gunmen, machete-wielders, and honor brigades on your side.
In fact, you know that all too well. Might that be why you refuse to recognize Islamist ideology as the cause of much of the world’s present mayhem?
Le Pen Moves Into Lead in French Race, Le Monde Poll Shows
Marine Le Pen is gaining support in France and has taken the lead in a major survey of voters’ intentions for the first round of the presidential election.
The populist leader of the National Front had between 25 percent and 26 percent support compared with 23 percent to 25 percent for Republican candidate Francois Fillon, according to an Ipsos Sopra Steria poll for Cevipof and Le Monde. In mid December, Fillon led with about 28 percent and Le Pen around 25 percent.
Since the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president on Nov. 8, the French race has been closely-watched as another crucial battle between populist and establishment forces. Under the French electoral system, the two leading candidates face each other in a run-off vote on May 7, presenting a significant hurdle to Le Pen. The poll didn’t include data for the second-round vote.

George Soros, Mastercard to partner to aid migrants, refugees
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Billionaire investor George Soros will partner with Mastercard Inc on a venture they said could help migrants, refugees and others struggling within their communities worldwide to improve their economic and social status.
The partnership, Humanity Ventures, stems from a pledge Soros made in September to earmark up to $500 million for investments to address challenges facing migrants and refugees.
In a joint statement on Thursday, Mastercard and Soros said that despite billions of dollars of humanitarian and development assistance, millions of people remain marginalized, a situation the private sector can help rectify.
“Migrants are often forced into lives of despair in their host communities because they cannot gain access to financial, healthcare and government services,” Soros said.
“Our potential investment in this social enterprise, coupled with Mastercard’s ability to create products that serve vulnerable communities, can show how private capital can play a constructive role in solving social problems,” he added.
Humanity Ventures intends to focus initially on healthcare and education, with a goal of fostering local economic development and entrepreneurship.

“Billionaire investor George Soros will partner with Mastercard Inc on a venture they said could help migrants, refugees and others struggling within their communities worldwide to improve their economic and social status.”
Time to stop accepting or using Mastercard.
Remember, even a small percentage hit on the bottom line of these multi-billion dollar corporations represents a drastic (i.e., multi-million dollar) loss. Likewise, only a direct hit to their profitability will ever, “get the mule’s attention.”
Yeah you have to hit them where they live, it probably wouldn’t take more then 10 to 20 thousand people deciding to not use Mastercard to get their attention.
Mysteries of the Obama years that must and will be solved
As with every outgoing president, when “former” is added to President Obama’s title there will be a barrage of tell-all books or extensive investigative articles about the “real story” behind various scandals, events or controversies. Now, Obama’s self-proclaimed nonsense about a “scandal free” administration provides more incentive for journalists and right-leaning historians to prove that statement “inoperative.” So count me in and here is my operating theory: The mysteries of the Obama administration must be solved if the American people are to know the truth about Obama’s scandals before left-leaning historians write glowing accounts of Obama’s legacy. (Aided by Obama whom we know is obsessed with his legacy.)
Sleuths must ask the iconic Watergate scandal question imperative to solve several of the mysteries, “What did the president know and when did he know it?” Of course, during his administration, Obama (being a Democrat) was not subjected to the media scrutiny inflicted upon President Nixon for potentially similar or equally heinous infractions of the law.
Moreover, if Obama were a Republican, we would already know the facts behind most of these mysteries. The media would have been relentless investigating the truth and many key players would likely either be in jail, have resigned in disgrace, or would have received immunity from prosecution

Hopefully, the Trump will release the Eric Holder “Fast & Furious” papers that The Great and Powerful Obama has hidden from us via Executive Action. ASAP!
Assuming they haven’t been destroyed, I have seen reports (but not any I considered reliable enough to post) that documents are being (illegally) destroyed in the White House and other Federal Buildings.
I’ve missed you, Joe.
The Comedy of Terrors: Western progressive thinking against culture, nature, and man
By Alexander Maistrovoy January 18, 2017
After Donald Trump’s win, a huge part of enlightened America was plunged into mourning. Students were crying, teachers canceled lectures to calm them down, “hotlines” started working to help desperate people.
In the USSR such mass hysteria happened only after Stalin’s death, when people cried thinking that it was the end of the world.
What brought American students to such despair? They are unlikely to be able to explain it, but it’s a very dangerous syndrome of mass insanity. It’s evidence that the cultural totalitarianism of the West is, first, far more effective than the Soviet political totalitarianism; and second – it is much more deadly and poisonous. It suppresses the will, consciousness, and emotions of people. The Soviet party members didn’t achieve that.
Soviet totalitarianism not only failed to suppress the basic instincts, but it did not even try to do this.
A man seeing a girl subjected to sexual harassment would stand up for her if he could. The situation similar to the one that happened in Cologne last year was unthinkable in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
It was absolutely unthinkable that political officials in the USSR would justify rapists and accuse their victims on the grounds of immodesty. It was inconceivable that the Politburo members might welcome the mockery of their own children and protect rapists, as happens regularly in Western Europe.
I can’t imagine that the Soviet courts would justify the rape of a child, as was the case in Austria; or care about the future of migrants who mocked and raped a child, as happened in Sweden. Authorities in Sweden decided not to deport Afghan migrants who committed a gang rape of the boy, because it was not safe in Afghanistan.

AZ bill would withhold state funding to colleges that teach classes on white privilege
By Howard Portnoy January 18, 2017
Call it a case of the empire striking back. We are beginning to feel stirrings of it now in all aspects of American society, which over the past eight years has been shackled by one politically correct edict after another. A biological male who for some reason believes he is female wants the right to tinkle in the ladies room? No problem. Black students demand that a university provide them with “affinity housing” so that they can live free of the specter of white privilege? Here are the keys — and, no, you are not a racist and what you are calling for is not a return to segregation.
The latest effort to break the chains of victimist oppression has taken the form of a bill introduced in the Arizona state legislature by Rep. Bob Thorpe, a Republican, that would effectively ban the teaching of courses that promote “white bashing” in private universities.
The bill, House Bill 2120, would extend the purview of a 2011 law that, according to The Arizona Republic, “forbids public and charter schools to teach anything promoting ‘resentment toward a race or class of people’ from kindergarten through 12th grade.”

Can’t let go: Obama orders diversity training for Trump’s federal work force
By LU Staff January 18, 2017
President Barack Obama is ordering select federal departments and agencies – which will be under President-elect Donald Trump’s authority shortly after noon Friday – to conduct mandatory diversity training every two years.
Obama’s order requires senior leaders, managers and employees who handle recruitment and hiring take the training, which is intended to reduce “unconscious bias” – stereotypes and biases people unknowingly hold, Government Executive reported Tuesday.
Obama wants the federal workforce to draw “from the rich range of diversity in our nation,” he wrote in the Jan 12. order. The federal government has spent nearly $240 million on diversity training since 2008, including $39.5 million in 2016, according to USASpending.gov.
The agencies affected are: The Department of the Interior; the U.S. Forest Service; the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works; and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Obama ordered the national security agencies promote diversity in October.
Obama also encouraged the affected agencies to implement “performance and advancement requirements that reward and recognize senior leaders’ and supervisors’ success in fostering diverse and inclusive workplace environments,” the memo said.
The federal government has hired more veterans and disabled individuals since Obama issued a similar 2011 executive order, Government Executive reported.

Artist behind Obama ‘hope’ poster is back, this time with message of hate for new president
By Ben Bowles January 18, 2017
You might think that Shepard Fairey had learned his lesson. His original claim to fame — the iconic “Hope” poster — copies of which appeared in college dorm rooms all over the nation after Barack Obama’s election were ultimately mocked and desecrated.
Despite the cruel fate the artist and his work suffered, Fairey and a group of fellow artists have mounted a campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for a new round of posters that they plan to have ready in time for Donald Trump’s inauguration in two days.
Unlike the 2008 effort, fueled by what turned out to be misguided optimism, the Trump posters will be vehicles for protest. The Kickstarter page explains:
But what these artists fail to recognize is that they are not rejecting hate: They are nurturing it. They claim naïvely that “our America is one of equal humanity that does not demean or discriminate,” seemingly oblivious to the divisiveness of their mission. Referring to “our America” paints a line between them and us.
http://libertyunyielding.com/2017/01/18/artist-behind-obama-hope-poster-back-message-hate-new-president/
Serial plagiarist, Shepard Fairey (the last name says it all), is a blatant, criminal fraud who merits even less artistic attention (if that can possibly be imagined) than an explicitly pseudo-religious panderer like the swindling, hype-meister, Thomas Kinkade.
The notion that either of these unashamed, barefaced, imposters could ever be taken (even slightly) is a serious indictment of what has been passed off as “artistic taste” ever since the lamentable debut of Margaret D. H. Keane. Hell, even Red Skelton or Norman Rockwell merit more serious consideration than this pair of brush-wielding charlatans.
As an artistic aside, please examine works by the (largely unknown) Philippine master, Fernando Amorsolo. His rich chromatic palette and superb control of light (the product of his studying European Old Masters) resulted in a body of work that has become an anthropological catalogue of Philippine culture and history.
I give you, “Sunday Morning Going to Town“. Please note how there is no direct source of light. Yet, almost dead center within this painting is the young woman’s parasol, conspicuously aglow with (otherwise entirely indirect) sunlight.
Upon “Bildungsphilister” daubers such as Fairey or Kinkade, this sort of subtlety has about the same significance as factual content does to Michael Moore.
I’ll stop now.
Fernando Amorsolo is real good.
Facebook blocks RT from posting until after Trump inauguration
RT has been blocked from posting content to its Facebook page. The ban, according to the Facebook bot, will last until Saturday 10:55pm Moscow time (2:55pm EST) and will extend across US president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
A misplaced live streaming rights strike during RT’s broadcast of President Obama’s final press conference seems to have triggered the ban.
RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan said she wasn’t surprised that RT had been blocked from posting on Facebook following a complaint from Current Time TV – a part of Radio Liberty, financed by the US Department of State.
“I’m not surprised. If the Department of State could block oxygen to us, they would do it”, she told RIA Novosti.
President Obama’s final press conference was carried live by multiple news networks on Wednesday. RT’s stream was interrupted by a Facebook bot notification that rights had been claimed by a local Russian publisher Current TimeTV.
When asked by RT, Current Time TV said in a statement that “the channel has not sent any complaints regarding RT or any other organizations in connection with the live feed.”
“We were feeding Barack Obama’s news conference with simultaneous translation on Facebook in a daily show Timur Olevsky’s Hour and we had all necessary rights for that feed,” it stated.
However, RT was streaming the broadcast from an AP Direct feed, being officially subscribed. In response to an RT inquiry, AP assured the channel it had no hand in breaking the streaming.
“There is no reason from our side as to why RT should have not been able to freely transmit our signal via their own FB page. In fact, I do not believe that AP would even be able to physically restrict client’s [sic] transmissions on their own Facebook pages. In addition, the footage was our own and the restrictions did not mention anything out of the ordinary […] In short, it must have been an issue on [Facebook’s] end,” AP Editorial Liaison representative Phoebe Paulus said in an email.
12 hours since the block, RT has not received any mails from Facebook to its page admin confirming this was the case.
The manager of the “News, Media and Publishing on Facebook” Group responded to an RT post on the block, saying it seemed RT had rights but that the only option was to submit to Facebook’s management system.
This is the first time RT has been blocked from posting to Facebook. Here is the image of our post to Facebook and of the chat with Facebook Media, News & Publishing group.

the independent – Facebook blocks Russia Today from posting so it can’t stream Donald Trump inauguration, state broadcaster claims
The dispute apparently arose because the page livestreamed Barack Obama’s final press conference
Russian state broadcaster Russia Today has been banned from Facebook so that it can’t cover the Donald Trump inauguration, it has claimed.
The site can’t post any media or links onto its page until the ceremony is over and Mr Trump becomes president, it has claimed.
Its ban is temporary and will be lifted on Saturday evening, and it says that it is working to get it lifted sooner. But if that doesn’t happen it won’t be able to cover any of Donald Trump’s inauguration, which takes place on Friday.
RT said that the ban had happened because the page live-streamed Obama’s final press conference. “Such things happen because (for ex.) some other news media livestreams carry the same shots and feed, and Facebook considers this a copyright violation,” it wrote on its page, where it can still post text but no images, videos or links.
But the video appeared to come from the White House, which makes its video available copyright free. As such, it isn’t clear who the complaint came from or when it was made.
In response to comments under that post it said that it was “NOT going anywhere, so tune in & question more” and that it was “proud to have such a great audience”.
Relations between Russia and the US have become strained in recent weeks after the latter’s intelligence agencies accused Russian agents of interfering with the US election to help Mr Trump be elected.

VICTIM OR AGGRESSOR – CHRYSTIA FREELAND’S FAMILY RECORD FOR NAZI WAR PROFITEERING, AND MURDER OF THE CRACOW JEWS
Chrystia Freeland (lead image), appointed last week to be the new Canadian Foreign Minister, claims that her maternal family were the Ukrainian victims of Russian persecution, who fled their home in 1939, after Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin agreed on a non-aggression pact and the division of Poland between Germany and the Soviet Union. She claims her mother was born in a camp for refugees before finding safe haven in Alberta, Canada. Freeland is lying.
The records now being opened by the Polish government in Warsaw reveal that Freeland’s maternal grandfather Michael (Mikhailo) Chomiak was a Nazi collaborator from the beginning to the end of the war. He was given a powerful post, money, home and car by the German Army in Cracow, then the capital of the German administration of the Galician region. His principal job was editor in chief and publisher of a newspaper the Nazis created. His printing plant and other assets had been stolen from a Jewish newspaper publisher, who was then sent to die in the Belzec concentration camp. […]
[…]Freeland was asked directly to clarify her own claims about Grandfather Chomiak’s war record. Her press spokesman, Chantal Gagnon, asked for more time, but then the two of them refused to answer.
“The sins of the grandfather can hardly be attributed to the granddaughter,” says Polish investigator Balcerac, “—except for two, race hatred and lying. Chomiak made a lucrative war selling hatred of Jews, Poles and Russians. Freeland is doing the same preaching race hatred of Russians. To mask what she’s doing, she has lied about the Nazi record of her family. The Chomiaks weren’t victims; they were aggressors.”
A Washington source adds: “Chomiak was recruited by US intelligence to wage war in the Ukraine against the Russians. Let’s see what the US Army and intelligence files reveal about his role, and let’s compare that to the one Freeland is now playing in Canada.”

Germany: Refugees coming via Med. should be brought to non-EU ‘safe spaces’ – De Maiziere
Refugees who attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea should not be permitted to enter Europe, but should be brought to “a safe place outside of Europe”, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere stated in Berlin on Thursday.
De Maiziere did not specify where this safe location outside of Europe would be, but explained that from there it would be assessed who meets the criteria to receive refuge in Europe.
SOT, Thomas de Maiziere, German Interior Minister (German): “Migrants, if they are taking a dangerous route through the Mediterranean Sea, should not be brought from the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, but instead to a safe place outside of Europe, and then from there those who need protection can be brought to Europe in the form of contingents and resettlements.”
SOT, Thomas de Maiziere, German Interior Minister (German): “The border checks, which we have carried out up until now, are ending mid-February. However we are convinced, together with our colleagues in Denmark, Sweden and in Finland, that we want to continue these border checks in whatever shape or form from mid-February, adjusted to the new situation. Considering the insufficient security measures of the outer borders and also considering terrorism and the security situation – I would like to remind you that we are hosting the G20 this year – we believe the continuation of border checks, in agreement with Austria and other neighbours, to be necessary.”
SOT, Wolfgang Sobotka, Austrian Interior Minister (German): “For us it is especially important to take measures and enable video surveillance in public spaces in series, like we saw in England. This could create a clear picture of escape routes and of the situation for the police force. It is obvious to us that we need to pay attention to the question of radicalised people. How do we deal with them? How do we have contact? Electronic surveillance, whether that would be ankle monitor bracelets or something else specific for this topic, that’s not important to us. It is crucial that we know where and when these people move around. You already mentioned that the prevention of radicalisation is a significant momentum.”

Germany: ‘Obvious’ potential of Russian hacking in 2017 elections – German intel chief
Russian interference in this year’s federal elections in Germany is ‘obviously’ a possibility, President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maassen stated in Berlin, Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference with foreign correspondents, Maassen justified his words by detailing allegations levelled at Russia over the 2016 Democratic National Committee email leak in the US. However, he admitted that there was no evidence to back up the claims.
SOT, Hans-Georg Maassen, President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (German): “We are of course looking very carefully at the situation in other countries. And we took note that in the US there was an attack on the Democratic Party, that there was an information leak and that this information was used in connection with the elections. The American intelligence services are convinced that most likely Russian intelligence services are behind the attack. We find that there were cyber attacks in Germany, too – on the German parliament for instance in spring 2015, where numerous gigabytes leaked. There were also attacks against parties, party entities and lawmakers like for instance the Greens’ Marie-Luise Beck who is critical of Russia. We have no evidence of course, but it is obvious that a similar scenario is possible in Germany, too, although I don’t want to say that it is likely – especially against the background of Germany playing a vital role within the EU and federal elections this year.”
SOT, Hans-Georg Maassen, President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (German): “There are over 1,200 persons who we consider to have a Islamist-terrorist potential, 500 of whom the Federal Criminal Police Office considers as ‘endangerers,’ which means that the police believes these persons are capable of committing terrorist acts. Anis Amri was amongst them. However, that does not mean that the police can arrest someone under the suspicion that this person is considered to be capable of committing an attack. In Germany and in Europe we cannot put people in prison under the simple suspicion of commiting a crime. The fundamental principle is that people have to commit a crime before being convicted and put behind bars.”
Deutsche Welle -German authorities ‘lose sight’ of three Islamists flagged as threats
Authorities in Germany have reportedly lost track of three radical Islamists who have been deemed a security risk. The government is under pressure to prevent a repeat of last month’s deadly attack on a market in Berlin.
Burkhard Lischka, a parliamentary spokesman for the Social Democrats, said three of the nearly 550 individuals identified as Islamist threats in Germany could not be found.
Speaking after a meeting of the internal affairs committee in Berlin, Lischka held up as a warning the case of Anis Amri, a failed asylum seeker from Tunisia who fell off the authorities’ radar despite long being regarded as a threat. Last month, the 24-year-old ploughed a truck through a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and wounding dozens more.
“They are playing with fire, and every wrong calculation can be deadly,” Lischka said.
Amri managed to flee to Italy, where he was fatally shot by police near Milan. The self-styled “Islamic State” terror group claimed responsibility for the Berlin attack, calling Amri a fellow “soldier.”
‘Unacceptable’ situation
The German government has been heavily criticized over the handling of Amri’s case, with many questions raised as to why he wasn’t apprehended. According to German media reports, investigators looking into his background ultimately decided it was unlikely he would carry out an attack.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on Wednesday announced that the country’s Joint Terrorism Task Force would now carefully review the cases of each of the 547 people – both German nationals and foreigners – flagged as security risks to determine whether they should be deported or taken into custody.
According to authorities, around half of the Islamists considered potentially dangerous in Germany are currently living abroad. Domestic policy spokesman for the ruling coalition, Stephan Mayer, told the interior committee meeting that 88 of those individuals were in custody. More than a third come from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, while a significant number are also based in Berlin, Mayer said.
De Maiziere urged lawmakers to speedily approve a raft of new measures announced earlier this month to make it easier for authorities to take people into custody for deportation. He also said it was unacceptable that Islamist militants were able to move freely around the country, and called for guidelines to be set up to help authorities deal with those deemed potentially dangerous.

Istanbul Reina attack suspect says nightclub was chosen at random
The man suspected of killing 39 people in an attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul on New Year’s Eve said the venue was chosen at random, local media report.
Abdulgadir Masharipov said so-called Islamic State (IS) initially told him to attack an area in Taksim Square.
He was forced to change his target because of heavy security in the area, according to the Hurriyet newspaper.
The Uzbek national was captured by Turkish police on Monday.
Abdulgadir Masharipov said his instructions came from Raqqa, IS’s stronghold in Syria, Hurriyet reports.
“I came to Taksim on New Year’s Eve but the security measures were intense. It wasn’t possible to carry out the attack,” he was quoted as saying.
“I was given instructions to search for a new target in the area. Reina looked suitable for the attack. There didn’t seem to be many security measures,” he added.
The BBC has not been able to verify the report in Hurriyet, which has not said how it managed to obtain the police interview in which the suspect makes his comments.

ISIL militants in Raqqa sent footage from inside nightclub attacked by Masharipov
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in Raqqa sent footage from inside the Reina nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortaköy to prepare ISIL militant Abdulkadir Masharipov to carry out the attack, according to testimony from the Uzbek militant that was released to the press.
Masharipov, who was caught on Jan. 16 in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, said in new testimony that he watched the video over and over because he was not familiar with the interior of the posh nightclub on the shore of the Bosphorus.
The footage that was sent from Raqqa has emerged, showing the interior and open sections of the nightclub. The footage also shows the route that Masharipov used during his attack on Jan. 1, in which a total of 39 people were killed and 65 others were wounded.
“When it was certain that we would carry out the attack, the emir I contacted in Raqqa sent me footage from inside Reina. I watched the footage over and over again. After completely memorizing the plan of the nightclub, I went to Zeytinburnu and got my weapon, I went back and started the attack,” Masharipov said in his testimony.
While searching for the initial source of the video, police are evaluating whether the footage might have been gathered from social media. Police are also considering the accuracy of the answers given by Masharipov.
The interrogation of the ISIL militant is reportedly being conducted in Russian due to his lack of proficiency in Turkish.
When asked why he chose Reina as a place to attack, Masharipov said those inside were “apostates.” He was also asked why he killed the police officer at the door.
“The police opened fire first. I wouldn’t have been able to enter the nightclub without killing him,” he said.
Masharipov also said he was detained in Iran in 2015 for nearly a month for carrying a fake passport. After that, he illegally entered Turkey in January 2016, he said.
“I was ordered to carry out a suicide attack in Taksim. That’s why I came to Istanbul. The footage I took in Taksim was deemed suitable by Hoca Aka in Raqqa,” Masharipov added, referring to an ISIL figure in Syria.
Masharipov told police that he was unable to meet the person that was supposed to deliver him the explosives for a prospective suicide attack, prompting him to again contact Raqqa. Based on orders from Raqqa, he went to Reina with his weapon and flashbangs, which he thought were hand grenades.
“I arrived at Reina to die. When I saw that the bombs spread light, I ran away,” he said.
Saying that he contacted ISIL militants in Raqqa after the attack, Masharipov said he started waiting after they told him that an ISIL cell in the Central Anatolian province of Konya, which was his initial destination after he arrived in Turkey, would contact him.
Meanwhile, the interrogations of suspects who were detained in connection to the Reina attack have been continuing. A total of 28 ISIL militants were arrested in Istanbul on Jan. 19.
Police are also searching for Masharipov’s 4-year-old son, who could not be found with him during the police operation.
In addition, police have been investigating the background of Masharipov. According to newly released information, the jihadist militant joined al-Qaeda after finishing university but switched his loyalties to ISIL because his views did not match the former group.
During the operation, 27-year-old Senegalese woman Dina A., 26-year-old Egyptian woman Tene Trare, and 27-year-old Somali woman Aysha M., were also apprehended in the same house. It was alleged that they might have been sent to Masharipov by ISIL as “rewards” for carrying out the attack.
After the raid in Esenyurt, Masharipov was taken to hospital after he told the authorities that he was feeling dizzy after appearing to have been struck in the head during his apprehension, according to photos released to the press. Doctors suggested that he should be kept awake for a while in order to understand whether there was a risk of cerebral hemorrhage.

Turkey Turns Church into Museum; Greece Builds New Mosque

Turkish newspapers have recently reported that plans are underway to restore the historic Greek Hagios Georgios Church, referred to as “Aya Yorgi” in Turkish. The church will be converted into a museum and a cultural site.
Osmaneli Mayor Munur Sahin said that the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, also visited the region, and said:
“We re-evaluated the situation of the church. This place will never be opened to worship again. It will serve as a museum and a cultural venue. We obtained the necessary permits; we will bring movable cultural artifacts from around Osmaneli and keep them here.”
The restoration project, approved by the Council of Monuments, is set to be finished in two years. The church lies in ruins — largely because the congregants were either murdered or forcibly deported during and after the 1914-1923 Greek genocide.
Turkey and Terrorists

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a good point when, a day after a terrorist attack in Istanbul killed 38 people on Dec. 10, he said that he condemned all terrorism in Turkey and expected that Turkey did the same when terror targeted Israel. “The fight against terrorism must be mutual,” Netanyahu said. “It must be mutual in condemnation and in countermeasures, and this is what the State of Israel expects from all countries it is in contact with, including Turkey,” Netanyahu said a day before Ankara and Jerusalem formally normalized their frozen diplomatic relations. Netanyahu’s expectation was legitimate but not realistic, especially with Turkey.
A few days later, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued an order outlawing the Istanbul-based International Kanadil Institute for Humanitarian Aid, a Turkish aid group, accusing it of funnelling money to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. “The Kanadil foundation is identified with Hamas and with the Muslim Brotherhood and in recent years had been used as a main pipeline for funding projects by Hamas in Jerusalem,” Lieberman’s spokesperson said in a statement. Turkey’s logistical and political support for its ideological next of kin, Hamas, did not come as a surprise, despite normalization with Israel: for Turkey’s rulers, there are terrorists, and terrorists who go with fancy tags.
In a November interview with Israel’s Channel 2, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he does not view Hamas as a terrorist organization. He called it instead a “political movement born from [a] national resurrection.” He also said he meets with Hamas “all the time.”

President-elect Donald Trump will sign as many as 200 executive orders targeting a wide range of Obama administration policies, according to Fox News judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano.
Napolitano told Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum Wednesday night that, based on his conversations with the president-elect, Trump could sign hundreds of regulations on his third full day in office. The judge did not say what policies were being targeted by the incoming administration.
Trump has hinted he would, for example, work to repeal “job killing” energy regulations his first day in office. Trump’s also said he’d repeal Obama-era executive orders on immigration, and he pledged to begin dismantling the Affordable Care Act.
The Trump transition team told reporters Wednesday Trump would issue just “four to five” executive orders on Friday after he’s sworn in.

Outrage as Islamic CALL TO PRAYER held inside historic British CATHEDRAL (express, Jan 19, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/756360/islamic-call-to-prayer-historic-british-gloucester-cathedral-outrage
“A ROW has broken out after an Islamic call to prayer was held inside one of Britain’s most historic cathedrals.
The traditional Muslim invocation to worship was performed in front of 1,000 people at the launch of a multi-cultural Faith Exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral.
Imam Hassan of the local Masjid-e-Noor mosque was invited by church leaders to carry it out in the cathedral’s 11th century Chapter House.
Many worshippers welcomed the “inclusive” act but some traditionalists questioned why a “different God” should be worshipped in such an iconic Christian house.
A clip of the call to prayer was initially shared on the cathedral’s Facebook page but then taken down as “inappropriate” as tensions rose.
One post on the removed thread by Isabel Farmer said: “It’s wonderful to be multicultural, but faith is set apart.
“We are never to worship other Gods in a house built for our saviour.
“My ancestors built this cathedral and to allow a practising Muslim pray to another God is insanely naive. What did you think it would do? Encourage them to convert?
“This is why England is on the downslide. Culture and Race have nothing to do with the first commandment as God made all races and he cares about souls only.
“Stand firm Christians. Bring people to the faith by telling them the truth.
“God is the same yesterday, today, forever, so stop with the multicultural appeal and open a history book and a Bible for yourself.”
The row spread as far as the USA and Twitter user ‘Sir Anglo’ tweeted: “Very disappointed that we are desecrating our gems. Gloucester Cathedral is magnificent.”
Another Twitter user with the name ‘& drew’ added: “Blasphemy at Gloucester Cathedral as Muslims abuse another ‘interfaith’ attempt’
Church leaders yesterday defended the call to prayer and said it was designed to promote religious tolerance and understanding…”
The ad under this clip is perfect product placement:
“Flea Bully [TM]…kills fleas & prevents reinfestation.”
Someone has a real good sense of humor.

In echo of Glasgow Cathedral row, decision to delete excerpt from cathedral exhibition comes after ‘inappropriate’ comments
A cathedral has removed a clip of a Muslim prayer being recited within its precincts from its Facebook page after it was heavily criticised for allowing the event to take place.
The prayer took place in Gloucester Cathedral’s chapter house as part of the launch of a multi-faith art exhibition, and was well-received by those who attended.
The cathedral decided to take down its social media post on the event following some of the comments it received on its page.
The controversy has echoes of the row that has engulfed St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow after a reading from the Qur’an took place at a service to mark the feast of the Epiphany.
The dean of Gloucester, the Very Rev Stephen Lake, sought to distance the cathedral from the dispute in Scotland. “The community event was to launch an art exhibition, Faith. The exhibition portrays a number of individuals’ stories and gives a glimpse of who they are as people of faith,” he said.
“The exhibition promotes religious understanding. Over 1,000 people from different Gloucester communities attended to share and learn about each other’s spiritual practices and traditions.
“However, it is important to stress that neither the art exhibition nor the gathering took place in a sacred space but were held in the cathedral cloisters and chapter house. Furthermore, the launch was not in the context of worship.
“While the cathedral’s primary purpose is as a place of Christian witness and worship, it is also a place for all people. Everyone is welcome, whatever their faith or background. We are proud to be holding the exhibition and would encourage everyone to visit to learn more about people of different faiths.”
A spokeswoman added that the vast majority of the comments received about the event were positive. “But we took the decision to remove the Facebook post because a small number of comments were inappropriate,” she said.
One critical post said: “We are never to worship other Gods in a house built for our saviour. My ancestors built this cathedral and to allow a practising Muslim pray to another God is insanely naive.” Another called it desecration and a third blasphemy.
The exhibition by the artist Russell Haines features 37 large portraits of individuals of faith including Zoroastrians, druids, witches and pagans. It also includes also a portrait of the bishop of Gloucester, Rachel Treweek.
As well as the Muslim prayer, the launch at the weekend featured Buddhist chanting, Rasta drumming and Hindu dancing. The cathedral billed the exhibition as an “exciting event full of firsts for the world of faith”.
The chapter house is on the east side of the cloister and is used for cathedral events including musical recitals. It is available for hire. It was constructed in the 11th century by Abbot Serlo, and the monastic community gathered there each day for a reading of a chapter from the Rule of St Benedict.
The controversy in Glasgow centred on the inclusion in a service of passages from the Qur’an read in Arabic from the cathedral’s lectern by a local Muslim student. The cathedral said it was part of efforts to build relationships between Christians and Muslims in Glasgow.
Madinah Javed, 19, read from the book of Maryam, which tells the story of Jesus’s birth. It includes the Islamic teaching that Jesus was not the son of God. Muslims, however, revere Jesus as a prophet.
Glasgow Cathedral said it had become the target of offensive messages on social media, which it had reported to the police.
Haines said Gloucester Cathedral’s decision to remove the clip was a kneejerk reaction.
“I think maybe because of Glasgow they panicked a bit,” he added. Haines, who describes himself as an atheist, said the launch event had been successful and good-natured and had been attended by a rabbi and a witch as well as an imam.

Jordan Boosts Border Forces Amid IS Threat From Iraq, Syria (abcnews, Jan 19, 2017)
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/jordan-boosts-border-forces-amid-threat-iraq-syria-44880080
“Jordan is deploying more forces to face a growing threat to its borders, as Islamic State extremists in neighboring Iraq and Syria are being dislodged from some strongholds, the commander of the kingdom’s border guards said Thursday.
The IS group, which seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014, is under intense military pressure in both countries and has lost significant territory in recent months. U.S.-backed Iraqi forces recently announced the recapture of the eastern side of Mosul, the northern city where they have been waging a three-month-old offensive.
Brig. Gen. Sami Kafawin, commander of Jordan’s border forces, said he expects some of the retreating IS fighters to make their way to southern Syria, close to Jordan.
IS-affiliated groups already hold positions in southern Syria, some a few hundred meters from the border, the commander said, ahead of a tour of military positions along the western-most stretch of Jordan’s border with Syria.
One such position, Thneibeh, faces the small Syrian village of Qusair, across the Yarmouk River.
Qusair is controlled by an IS-affiliated group, said Col. Rami Sondos, a border official. Another Syrian village, separated from Qusair by a deep ravine, is run by Syrian rebels.
The Syrian groups mostly fight each other, trading fire between the two villages, as the Jordanian troops observe…”
Belgium sentences fake-ID gang used by Brussels and Paris attackers (BBC, Jan 19, 2017)

“A Belgian court convicted 14 people on Thursday of falsifying identity documents, some of which were sold to Islamist militants involved in terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.
Thirteen received jail terms of between one and eight years, some suspended, according to Belgian news service Belga.
One member of the group was sentenced to community service.
The group are said to have made around 2,000 fake documents.
The documents were used by Salah Abdeslam, a suspect of the November 2015 attacks in Paris, and Najim Laachraoui, who blew himself up at Brussels Airport in March 2016.
The Islamic State group took responsibility for the attacks in both countries.
However, the ID forgers were not prosecuted for terrorism as they were not known to have been aware of the intentions of those who bought their work…”
Germany won’t tolerate Turkish spying, says spy chief (reuters, Jan 19, 2017)

“Germany will not tolerate Turkish intelligence operations within its borders, the head of the country’s domestic spy agency said on Thursday after its chief prosecutor launched an investigation into possible spying by Turkish clerics.
Hans-Georg Maassen said Berlin was very concerned about recent developments in Turkey, as well as “influence operations” directed against the Turkish minority in Germany or Germans with a Turkish migration background.
“We cannot accept that intelligence agencies are operating in Germany against German interests, and that is why we protest,” Maassen told reporters in Berlin.
The investigation, begun this week, followed a criminal complaint filed in early December by Volker Beck, a German lawmaker and religious spokesman for the Green party.
The issue threatens to further strain ties between NATO partners Germany and Turkey…”
Jogger brutally attacked by hooded thugs – and only escapes by speaking ARABIC (express, Jan 19, 2017)
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/756384/Birmingham-attack-Arabic-Pakistani-Acocks-Green
“A TEACHER has told how he was viciously attacked and forced into a canal – and only escaped a further beating by speaking to them in Arabic.
Dad-of-two Lee Skinner, 38, was punched and knocked into the freezing water as he ran past five hooded youths in Acocks Green, Birmingham.
As he struggled to get out of the cold, slippery canal the thug who punched him was waiting – until the former language teacher started speaking Arabic.
The shame-faced gang, all aged around 17, then fled the scene and the attacker is now being hunted by police.
Media lecturer Lee from Olton, had needed hospital treatment for his injuries after the 3pm attack on Sunday.
He told the Birmingham Mail: “The police praised me and said my speaking in Arabic showed quick-thinking. They said my actions could have stopped the situation from being a lot worse.”
The attack took place on the canalside in Yardley Road.
Lee was jogging towards a bridge when he tried to pass the youths, who he believes were all from the Pakistani community.
He said: “There were five in total, all wearing grey and black, casual clothing, puffy coats, caps and hoods.
“The guy who punched me was rounded in the face and had neat, tidy stubble. The other four were quite slim.”
He added: “As I jogged past, the one with a rounded face punched me full force with his left hand, into my right cheek. I went up into the air and into the water.
“I sank and was completely submerged, my feet were not touching the bottom. I opened my eyes and could see brown muddy swirl around me.
“The water was so cold that I couldn’t breathe properly. All I could do was kick my feet to get to the surface.
“The one who punched me was waiting at the side of the canal with an incredible look of pleasure on his face. “He was waiting to watch me suffer or to come back so he could hit me again.”
It was at this point that bilingual Lee began to speak in Arabic.
He said: “I was able to identify them as Pakistani as I’ve worked in Muslim communities and have a detailed knowledge of Islam and speak Arabic to a certain level. I also used to teach asylum seekers for a while.
“So in that moment I said something in Arabic – a Muslim declaration of faith. As soon as I said it, a look of panic spread across their faces. I then shouted in Arabic, ‘May God forgive you’.
“At that moment they looked like a bunch of terrified schoolchildren. That’s what ended it. It would have been prolonged otherwise, I believe.
“What I said made me human to them, gave me an identity. They started seeing me as a person.” …”

After US, Australia now wants trade deal with UK ‘very quickly’
Posted on January 19, 2017 18:30
By Willem Cornax
Most likely adding fuel to the Verhofstadt-fire, Australia has announced it too wants to negotiate a quick post-Brexit trade agreement with the United Kingdom. There have already been “preliminary conversations“, Australian Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, told Sky news at the World Economic Forum in Davos. These, and other statements are in line with the Australian Governments’ stance back in October 2016 when they confirmed after Brexit there ought to be negotiations for a trade deal with the United Kingdom “as efficiently and promptly as possible.”
This means another global trading partner of the European Union is courting the UK. The European Union and Australia traded over €40 Billion in goods and €115 Billion in Foreign Direct Investments in 2015. Australia is one of the 20 largest partners for EU-trade.
After the scuttled Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU, Australia had already reduced expectations on such an agreement with the EU. Australia now reaffirms its commitment to pick the United Kingdom over the European Union. The list of countries already having conversations about trade agreements with the United Kingdom keeps growing.
Theses countries, like China and Brazil, represent a major share of the world economy. Striking a deal with them would already expose the United Kingdom to markets it could not access as a member of the European Union. Member states are not allowed to negotiate trade deals on their own. Moreover, EU’s negotiations with India, China, and Brazil (as part of Mercosur) are either dead in the water or advancing very slowly.

Dutch National Opera issues apologetic foreword on Islam before staging Mozart Opera

The Dutch National Opera is currently performing Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Premiering in 1782, the story revolves around the harem of the fictional Ottoman Pasha Bassa Selim ? who, much to the dismay of Mozart’s contemporary audiences, was a highly sensible and loving character, defying the Turkish stereotypes of the days.
But, presumably, because Bassa Selim is a Muslim character nonetheless, the director of the current show, Johan Simons, felt compelled to issue the following leaflet to his audience (full-size image):

How will Germany respond to Trump’s intended 35% tariff on BMW’s built in Mexico?
Posted on January 19, 2017 15:00
By Benjamin de Wolf
After winning the election in November, Trump spoke to CNN and outlined his plans for his first hundred days in office, a common tradition among US President-Elects. Trump doubled down on his election promises to make better deals for the US. He said he will “issue a notification of intent to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is a potential disaster for our country and replace it with negotiating “fair bilateral trade deals.” Last week, Trump announced a deal with the Brits, he now has his eyes set on Germany.
The first notable reaction on Trump’s policy to impose a 35 percent tax on any BMWs cars made in Mexico came from Germany’s Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, telling Trump to “back off from levying punitive tariffs against companies producing goods in Mexico.” Angela Merkel also joined in on the conversation stating that “Those who do not stand up for their ideals, … who give up their fundamental values for a small short-term advantage, will not be successful in the long run.”
But there are also other voices heard in this debate. German Deputy Finance Minister Jens Spahn responded to Trump’s import remarks, and also to his statements that there are (relatively) more German cars in the US, than the other way around. Spahn said that if “BMWs or Mercedes’ sells well in the US, while a Dodge sells rather poorly in Europe, it’s because of decisions made by consumers, not by the state.” But Spahn continued by saying, “Trump is certainly asking justifiable questions and we need to be responsive.” And on the US-German (bilateral) cooperation he said: “If the new American president has suggestions for how to improve this, we are open for a conversation.”
Spahn expects Trump to focus on Germany’s trade surplus since it is not the first time the US criticises Germany on that account. Germany is on the Watch List for FX practices, Politico comments:

Lunch break! And what better way to come to peace with the fact that your lunch is basically the same every day, than listening to the one man People’s Army rant about the inherent slyness of the EU. And while we’re at it, we might as well throw in the classic that stole EU-sceptics’ hearts six years ago, when Farage confronted then President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy with the fact that he’s an unknown and unelected technocrat.

Bomb Threats Called Into 27 Jewish Centers in 17 States
By Bridget Johnson January 18, 2017
Jewish community centers across the country were evacuated today after a fresh wave of bomb threats were called into the facilities.
Federal agents were already investigating a series of bomb threats delivered last week via robocalls and at least one live caller to 16 Jewish center across nine states.
The targeted centers were located in the South, mid-Atlantic region and Northeast.
Today, the JCC Association of North America said threats targeted 27 Jewish community centers across 17 states in a new wave of calls, causing the centers to “quickly engage in security protocols to ensure the safety of their participants and facilities.”
According to an NBC affiliate in Connecticut, a woman called a Jewish center in West Hartford at 9:30 a.m. to say there was a bomb in the building. A center in Woodbridge also received a threat from a woman caller at 9:22 a.m. Classes of preschoolers were evacuated while police searched buildings.

I just want to know what Israel does to prevent this terror-by-telephone and when can we start doing it here (if it’s within US law)?
Good question.
There is a law on the books from WWII making bomb threats real or fake a Federal crime punishable by several years in the pen. In this day of caller ID they should be able to track where the calls came from.
Brazil Supreme Court judge handling graft probe killed in plane crash
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki was killed in a plane crash on Thursday, raising questions about who will take over his investigation into dozens of politicians in the country’s biggest ever corruption scandal.
Rescuers found three bodies in the wreckage of the small, twin-prop plane that crashed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state amid heavy rains, firefighters said.
Zavascki, 68, had in recent weeks been reviewing explosive testimony from executives at engineering group Odebrecht, expected to implicate hundreds of politicians in a scandal involving kickbacks on contracts at state-run enterprises.
The dual-propeller Hawker Beechcraft C90GT carrying Zavascki left a Sao Paulo airport around 1 p.m. (1500 GMT). It crashed into the sea about 80 minutes later near its destination in the tourist town of Paraty, according to air force and civil aviation authorities.
The plane belonged to luxury hotel group Emiliano, according to civil aviation authority ANAC. No information was provided on the identity of others killed in the crash.
Condolences poured in from federal prosecutors and senior politicians, including some named in the sweeping graft probe – known as Operation Car Wash – that has shaken Brazil’s political establishment over the past three years.
Crusading anti-graft Judge Sergio Moro, who has spearheaded the graft investigation at the grassroots level for nearly three years, said in an emailed statement that he “was stunned” by Zavascki’s death, whom he called a “Brazilian hero.”
“Without him, there would be no Operation Car Wash,” Moro wrote. “I hope that his legacy, of serenity, seriousness and firmness in enforcing the law, regardless of the interests of those involved, even the powerful, will not be forgotten.”
RULING COALITION THREATENED
The investigation, involving at least 6.4 billion reais ($2.0 billion) in bribes for contracts with state-run enterprises, has led to the jailing of dozens of senior executives and threatens to batter the ruling coalition of President Michel Temer.
Under Supreme Court rules, Zavascki’s case load would normally fall to the justice named by Temer to replace him, but an exception can be made for urgent matters, according to a court representative.
Carlos Pereira, a professor of public administration at the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Rio de Janeiro and a leading expert on corruption, said Zavascki’s death was a serious blow but he was confident it would not derail the graft investigation.
“The death of Teori is unquestionably a stress test for Brazilian institutions, but there is no question that President Temer will be under tremendous pressure to nominate a replacement who has absolutely no hint of wanting to slow or halt the Car Wash investigation,” Pereira said.
Pereira said that close attention from judges, prosecutors, police and Brazilian civil society would safeguard the case.
“If there is any sign that anyone would use Teori’s death in an opportunistic manner to put up obstacles … I have no doubt they will be severely punished by many sectors of society,” Pereira said.

“FORMER Italian prime minister Romano Prodi has spoken of his dismay at the state of the European Union.
Mr Prodi, who had two spells in power, condemned the lack of leadership and strategy in Brussels and admitted the Europe he once dreamed of was dead.
His comments came in an interview with Italy’s Quotidiano newspaper in the same week Theresa May laid out her plans for a hard Brexit which would sever all existing ties with the EU including the single market and customs union.
The 77-year-old said: “The EU has no strategies and there is no leader to follow…”

Turkish MPs hurt in brawl over constitution reform (alaraby, Jan 19, 2017)
https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/1/19/turkish-mps-hurt-in-brawl-over-constitution-reform
“At least two Turkish MPs were injured on Thursday as brawls erupted in parliament between supporters and critics of a constitutional reform bill boosting the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports said.
Those hurt included a deputy from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) opposition party and one from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), according to Turkish media.
Pictures showed the two women being carried away on stretchers from the parliament, which is debating a second reading of the controversial bill.
The scuffle broke out after an independent lawmaker, Aylin Nazliaka, handcuffed herself to the microphone on the platform at the front of the hemicycle for over an hour to protest the reform bill.
“I am chaining myself to the lectern to say no to the diktat of one man, to oppose the annulment of republican values and protest against parliament being handcuffed with this constitutional revision,” she said.
AKP deputies tried to remove her, but MPs from the opposition HDP and Republican People’s Party (CHP) sprang to her defence, and punches and kicks were exchanged, according to Turkish media…”

SPAIN – BARCELONA -Combatting Islamophobia and strengthening social cohesion
City Council has presented its municipal plan to combat Islamophobia, a pioneering municipal government measure in the Spanish state which aims to guarantee social cohesion and protect human rights. The document has been discussed and agreed upon in a process involving eighty people, including human rights and discrimination experts, specialised municipal staff, social entities and organisations from the Muslim community. The plan, which sets out 28 measures and has a budget of over 100,000 euros, aims to support the most vulnerable victims: women. In the province of Barcelona, reported hate crimes rose by 19% in 2015, compared to 2014, and 40% compared to 2013.
Girls who are rejected by their social environment when they decide to wear a veil, difficulties in opening prayer centres, insults on public transport, bearded young men who can’t find university work placements and so on. These are the most common cases of discrimination and Islamophobia in Barcelona.
Generally it’s not an issue of physical aggression, although there are some cases, and so the main objectives of this plan revolve around prevention, awareness and backing for interculturality and social cohesion.
“It’s urgent to raise awareness on existing Islamophobia, as it’s a serious form of discrimination which violates basic human rights and makes us more fragile as a society. The best antidote for hate and intolerance is the recognition of the religious, political and cultural diversity in the world of Islam”, affirmed Jaume Asens, Deputy Mayor.
The Office for Non-Discrimination (OND) will become the main service run by City Council for citizens and organisations to document, receive information, training and advice on hate crimes and hate discourse. The municipal service will collate data in order to provide a better snapshot of the situation in the city, as well as activating mechanisms for officially reporting hate crime and hate speech and litigating in significant cases if necessary.
The Hate Crime and Hate Speech Observatory is also to be created and training organised for municipal workers in this area, including the City Police. Other measures include encouraging schools to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
