Fort Lauderdale Airport attacked – 9 shot, 3 dead so far. No descriptions given: Multiple shooters now reported

WSVN.COM:

FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FLA. (WSVN) – According Broward Sheriff Fire, there are at least six people shot at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

FLL officials said the shooting took place in the lower level baggage claim area, in Terminal 2 ,at around 1 p.m., Friday.

There was an active shooter call at one point. By 1 p.m., a suspect was in custody, according to Broward County’s mayor.

The extent of these six victims’ injuries is unknown at this time.

Daily Mail:

A gunman is in custody after a deadly shooting at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport.

Sources tell NBC Miami that nine people have been shot and three people have died.

An airport spokesman said that the center of the incident was in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. It does not appear that the shooter breached the TSA-secured area of the airport.

Video from the airport Friday afternoon showed hundreds of passengers corralled together on the tarmac with emergency vehicles parked outside the terminal with lights flashing.

UPDATE: RT reports MULTIPLE SHOOTERS at multiple terminals:

Multiple fatalities have been confirmed in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. The suspected attacker was taken into custody, but the airport stayed closed due to reports of more shots in other terminals.

“Multiple people” were dead, Broward County Sheriff’s Office told the media. At least five deaths were confirmed.

Eight people were injured and transported to an area hospital, the sheriff’s office said. Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief later updated the number of injured to 13.

This one claims to have been verified by CNN. Which means nothing other than if CNN claims its real, its their fault if its not. But CNN is basically the equivalent of PRAVDA during the Cold War, so its surprising that they would verify Islamic connections to this event.

There is a lot of information, ation here linking him to Islamic terrorism, and the IS. He apparently told the FBI that voices were telling him to fight for ISIS.

Thank you Xanthippa, M., Wrath of Khan, and more who are contributing as fast as information is made available.

  1. FOX NEWS has someone on the line. He’s inside with his wife, was a few feet from shooter.
Was giving his account when more shots came from basement garage area. Ordered down on floor, people crying…

  2. From: At least 5 dead, 8 hospitalized after shooting at Ft. Lauderdale airport

The suspect in the first shooting was identified as Esteban Santiago, Fla. Sen. Bill Nelson told reporters. He said Santiago was carrying a military ID, but did not elaborate.

Eight people were rushed to hospitals, the Broward County Sheriff said. The city’s mayor said there was only one shooter involved in the first incident.

“It was very surreal,” John Schlicher, a witness, told Fox News. “He did not say a word.” He described the shooter as a slender man with dark hair, likely in his 30s, wearing a Star Wars T-shirt.

Expect detailed, extensive coverage because the shooter was military. If it turns out the killer was a Muslim convert, this incident will go down the memory hole faster than you can say “Islam”.

  3. Official: Suspected Gunman Told FBI He Was Being Forced To Fight For ISIS

[…]According to Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Esteban-Ruiz was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a gun that he checked in.

“He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. Came out shooting people in baggage claim,” LaMarca said.

On the company’s Twitter account, Air Canada confirmed that no one by that name was on their flight. Air Canada flights arrive to Terminal 2, where the shooting took place.

We confirm we have no record of a passenger by the name Esteban Santiago, or checked guns, on any of our flights to Fort Lauderdale #FLL 5/5

Law enforcement said he was found with an active military ID and is an American citizen, born in New Jersey. Previous known addresses include Penuelas, Puerto Rico and Anchorage, Alaska.

They add that in November 2016, he walked into an FBI office in Anchorage claiming that he was being forced to fight for ISIS. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital.

In 2011 or 2012, he was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations for child porn. Three weapons and a computer were seized, but there was not enough evidence to prosecute, according to law enforcement sources.[…]

  5. N.J. aunt of Ft. Lauderdale airport shooting suspect: ‘He lost his mind’ in Iraq

The suspect in the Fort Lauderdale shooting was a U.S. military veteran who “lost his mind” after a tour of duty in Iraq, his aunt said Friday.

Maria Ruiz Rivera, of Union City, said she was told by relatives in Florida that the suspected shooter who killed at least five people at the Fort Lauderdale airport Friday was her nephew, Esteban Santiago-Ruiz.

Agents who identified themselves as being from the FBI arrived at the family’s Union City apartment Friday afternoon to question the aunt and uncle about their nephew, the family said.

Ruiz Rivera said relatives in Florida were also contacted by law enforcement officials Friday afternoon.

Santiago-Ruiz, who was born in New Jersey, was living in Alaska and has a newborn baby boy, his aunt told NJ Advance Media. He appeared to be doing well and was working a security job in recent months, she said.

But he was hospitalized for mental health issues after returning from a year-long tour in Iraq about five years ago, his aunt said.

“He lost his mind,” Ruiz Rivera said in Spanish.

Her husband, Hernan Rivera, said he was unsure why Santiago-Ruiz might have opened fire in the baggage claim area of the Florida airport.

“No idea. Only thing I could tell you was when he came out of Iraq, he wasn’t feeling too good,” Hernan Rivera said.

Santiago-Ruiz’s brother in Puerto Rico said the suspected shooter had been recently receiving psychological treatment while living in Alaska.

Bryan Santiago told The Associated Press that his family got a call in recent months from Santiago-Ruiz’s girlfriend alerting them to the situation. But Bryan Santiago said he did not know what his brother was being treated for and they never spoke about it by phone.

Authorities in Florida have not identified the suspect arrested after killing five and injuring eight in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and appeared to act alone.

A tweet from Broward Commisioner Chip LaMarca said he was told the shooter arrived in Fort Lauderdale as a passenger on a flight from Canada with a gun checked in his bag.

He retrieved the checked bag at baggage claim, went to the bathroom to take out the gun, then opened fire in the baggage claim area, LaMarca said.

CBS News reported Santiago-Ruiz was known to the FBI. In November, he walked into the FBI office in Anchorage and told agents he was being forced to fight for ISIS, sources told CBS.

NEW: In Nov. 2016, FLL suspect walked into FBI office in Anchorage, claiming he was being forced to fight for ISIS, sources tell CBS News.
    — CBS News (@CBSNews) January 6, 2017

Santiago-Ruiz, 26, was born in New Jersey to parents who were originally from Puerto Rico, his aunt and uncle in Union City said. He lived in New Jersey until age 3, when his family moved back to Puerto Rico.

As an adult, Santiago-Ruiz joined the National Guard and was sent to Iraq, his aunt said. After his tour, he was hospitalized for mental problems, then went back to Puerto Rico, where his father was ill and eventually died, she said.

While in Puerto Rico, Santiago-Ruiz was in therapy for his mental problems, his uncle said.

The Iraq War veteran eventually made his way to Alaska, where he fathered a baby born in September.

Ruiz Rivera said the last time she saw her nephew was about four years ago when he spent a week with his family in Union City over Christmas.

She last spoke to her nephew after his son’s birth. He seemed fine, she said.

However, when she texted him on Christmas Eve, he did not return the message, Ruiz Rivera said.

    • The libs stopped the training that taught the recruits how to handle stress, that is why we are having so many come home with massive mental problems. When the DIs can stress the hell out of the recruits they learn how to handle the stress, at least most of them do.

    • I am not sure, if there is shooting or terrorist attack the witnesses, if they are not trained, often make mistakes. On the other hand if the multiple witnesses say the same things, the witnesses may be right.
Frankly I am getting quite upset with the white and black lies media are telling. It is like they are conducting a war. And the war is against the people.

      • “Frankly I am getting quite upset with the white and black lies media are telling. It is like they are conducting a war. And the war is against the people.”

With no disrespect intended … your point is?

      • That is what the Propaganda Media is doing, waging a war against the people who dare to oppose the Dems and their Marxist agenda.

  6. 5. He may have recently contacted the FBI.

A man matching Santiago’s description and believed to have been Santiago walked into FBI offices in Anchorage two months ago, claiming:

*the government was forcing him to watch ISIS videos, sources told CBS News.*

Apparently, agents were so concerned about Santiago, they brought him to a mental hospital, CBS News’ Scott Pelley reported.

  7. “Why is CNN attempting to make the shooter look more white? ”

    Ask George Zimmerman.

  8. Predictably the alt left and their useful idiots are calling for more gun control.

Yes one man fell through the cracks a man who shouldn’t have had access to firearms. That is no reason to strip the 2nd Amendment rights from the rest of us. Especially when the terror attacks in the states with heavy handed gun control laws show the need for more armed people. Lets try the Israeli solution, arm the vets, retrain where necessary that will put more armed people to protect the unarmed.

  9. the gateway pundit – FL Shooter Esteban Santiago Joined Myspace Under Name ‘Aashiq Hammad’ – Recorded Song w/Shahada

    http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2017/01/update-ft-lauderdale-shooter-esteban-santiago-joined-myspace-name-aashiq-hammad/

FortLauderdale Terrorist Esteban Santiago Joined MySpace As “Aashiq Hammad”, Recorded Islamic Music

“Aashiq Hammad” lists Penuelas, Puerto Rico as his location, just like Esteban Santiago’s records in Nexis.

And take a look at the three songs recorded by “Aashiq Hammad.” The first one is titled “La ilaha illAllah”, which is Arabic for “There is no God but Allah,” and the first half of the Muslim declaration of faith, the Shahadah:

That song was recorded in 2007, 3 years before Esteban Santiago went to Iraq as a U.S. soldier in 2010, destroying the lying mainstream media’s narrative that he was a “mentally disturbed veteran”, although even they admit Santiago went into an FBI office in 2015 and told agents he was being forced to watch ISIS videos by voices in his head (or something).

Santiago was definitely mentally disturbed, but if he was calling himself “Aashiq Hammad”, recording Islamic religious music online, and downloading Islamic terrorist propaganda all in 2007, 3 years before his first deployment to Iraq, what do you really think is the root cause here?

[…]If the location and e-mail weren’t enough proof, “Aashiq Hammad” also has Bryan Santiago — Esteban’s brother — as a connection:

  10. Associated Press – Brother of airport shooting suspect says U.S. government failed him

The brother of a man accused of killing five people at a Florida airport questioned Saturday why his brother was allowed to keep his gun after U.S. authorities knew he’d become increasingly paranoid and was hearing voices.

Esteban Santiago, 26, had trouble controlling his anger after serving in Iraq and told his brother that he felt he was being chased and controlled by the CIA through secret online messages. When he told agents at an FBI field office his paranoid thoughts in November, he was evaluated for four days, then released without any follow-up medication or therapy.

“The FBI failed there,” Bryan Santiago told The Associated Press. “We’re not talking about someone who emerged from anonymity to do something like this.”

Speaking in Spanish outside his family’s house in Penuelas, the brother said: “The federal government already knew about this for months, they had been evaluating him for a while, but they didn’t do anything.”

Authorities in Alaska on Saturday defended their interactions with Esteban Santiago. FBI Special Agent in Charge Marlin Ritzman told a news conference that Santiago broke no laws when he walked into the Anchorage FBI office “making disjointed comments about mind control.” He characterized Santiago as a “walk-in complaint,” which he said offices around the country receive daily.

Anchorage police were called to the office by the agency, told Santiago he was having “terroristic thoughts” and believed he was being influenced by the so-called Islamic State and was taken to a mental health facility, city police chief Chris Tolley said. Santiago had left a gun and his newborn child in his vehicle when he went to the FBI office. Police held the gun until Santiago was released and contacted him about picking up the weapon, which he did on Dec. 8, Tolley said.

U.S. Attorney for Alaska Karen Loeffler said that it doesn’t appear to her that Santiago would have been prohibited from having access to a gun. “As far as I know … this is not somebody that would have been prohibited,” she said.

In recent years, Esteban Santiago — a new dad — had been living in Anchorage. But there were signs of trouble.

He was charged in a domestic violence case in January 2016, damaging a door when he forced his way into a bathroom at his girlfriend’s Anchorage home. The woman told officers he yelled at her to leave, choked her and smacked her on the side of the head, according to charging documents.

A month later, municipal prosecutors said he violated the conditions of his release when officers found him at her home during a routine check. He told police he had lived there since he was released from custody the previous month. His Anchorage attorney, Max Holmquist, declined to discuss his client.

Tolley detailed other complaints of physical disturbances last year involving Santiago but said officers either found no probable cause for arrest or were told by the city prosecutor not to arrest him.

Bryan Santiago said his brother had requested psychological help but barely received any.

“I told him to go to church or to seek professional help,” he said.

Family members have said Esteban Santiago changed after serving a yearlong tour in Iraq. He was born in New Jersey but moved to Puerto Rico when he was 2, his brother said. He grew up in Penuelas before joining the Guard in 2007.

He deployed in 2010 as part of the Puerto Rico National Guard, spending a year with an engineering battalion, according to Guard spokesman Maj. Paul Dahlen.

Esteban Santiago’s mother wiped tears from her eyes as she stood inside a screen door Saturday. She said her son had been tremendously affected by seeing a bomb explode near two friends while serving in Iraq.

Alaska National Guard spokeswoman Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead told The New York Times that two soldiers in Santiago’s company had died during his stint in Iraq.

Former neighbor Ursula Candelario in Penuelas recalled seeing Esteban Santiago grow up and said people used to salute him after he joined the Guard. “He was very peaceful, very educated, very serious,” she said. “We’re in shock. I couldn’t believe it.”

Since returning from Iraq, Santiago served in the Army Reserves and the Alaska National Guard in Anchorage, Olmstead told AP. He was serving as a combat engineer in the Guard before his discharge for “unsatisfactory performance.” His military rank upon discharge was E3, private 1st class, and he worked one weekend a month with an additional 15 days of training yearly, Olmstead said.

She would not elaborate on his discharge. The Pentagon said he went AWOL several times and was demoted and discharged.

While it is unclear if Esteban Santiago had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, as many as one in five veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan develop the affliction each year, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A 2014 Veterans Affairs study found that almost 30 percent of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who sought treatment at VA hospitals were diagnosed with PTSD symptoms.

His uncle and aunt in New Jersey were trying to make sense of what they were hearing about Santiago. FBI agents arrived at their house to question them on Friday.

Maria Ruiz told The Record newspaper that her nephew had recently become a father to a son and was struggling.

“It was like he lost his mind,” she said in Spanish of his return from Iraq. “He said he saw things.”

Santiago was flying from Anchorage on a Delta flight and had checked only one piece of luggage, which contained the gun.

Sen.-elect Nelson Cruz, who knew the family and represents the town where they live in Puerto Rico, said he had been talking regularly with Bryan Santiago since the shooting.

“They’re very humble and very Christian people,” Cruz said. “They want to tell the families of the victims that they’re extremely saddened and extremely upset by what happened.”

  12. Did he take Larium because of his deployment?
He or his CO would have known of the risik of having taken larium (psychosis). Anyone can walk into an FBI office to claim having heard voices. Was this to cover him or did he fail to seek appropriate medical treatment because of psychosis? Did the hospital where he was evaluated call in someone experienced from the military? Was he treated at a VA facility? I think not because his gun was kept and returned by law enforcement office.
